While fans may accept their side having a break, the quality of other matches over this period tends to be of a low standard which initially doesn’t gain one’s interest (except perhaps for the Geelong-St Kilda clash last week when the result was known). Overall though, it is a lacklustre period for fans in particular. Then there are the inequalities in the lop-sided draw as to who faces who before and after each have had their breaks, creating distinct advantages or disadvantages for different sides. At the moment, sides which are yet to have a break are facing oppositions coming off theirs which is unfair under any system. Such as North Melbourne being made to play Adelaide after consecutive six-day breaks and the Crows entering the contest fresh off a 12-day return. Coming up, the Sydney Swans will only have a six-day break before heading to Simonds Stadium to play Geelong with a

13-day hiatus ahead of the game. Such indifference shouldn’t happen. One would think it wouldn’t be too difficult for the AFL to, at least, program sides that had breaks against each other the following week. However, they say otherwise and the current system of inequality remains. We don’t want to see things head in the direction of the SANFL either where continual byes every few weeks over the course of the season impact on fans’ appeal which has wavered this year. Therefore isn’t it really time to say good bye to the current system run over three weeks? It would be much better to simply have one weekend off for all mid-season and everyone can return rejuvenated for the run towards the finals – players and fans included. Players get their break which they so covet and fans can reconnect with their families for that weekend as well. There is usually little to write or talk about for the media over the current system so one-week off

THUMBS UP

BEATBOX wouldn’t harm them either. However, the AFL is too concerned with giving up traction to other sports if it takes a full weekend off. Really, they need to trust the quality of the product being displayed to allow this to occur. Maybe that weekend could be given more focus to the national under-18 championships or from next year, a greater opportunity to promote the women’s game. Now we hear that players wish to pursue another week off during the season through their AFL Players Association agreement and the AFL may be forced to comply. It would leave this year’s break between round 23 and the first week of the finals as a once-off so players can be actioned into the fixture. Yes, another week off. This would certainly dampen fans’ interest and while the players are at the forefront of the game, fans, as key investors, are the lifeblood. Games are just programmed and players are expected to turn up at whatever cost and conditions. Once the AFL begins to take everyone’s interests into account then the game can prosper and grow. THUMBS Down

However, 18 months on, Australian rising star Jack Miller has celebrated his maiden MotoGP victory.

To round out its three weeks from hell, the Australian rugby union team succumbed to its worst result ever to a visiting England side, losing the three Test series in a whitewash, going down 44-40 in the dead rubber last Saturday.

In tricky wet-dry conditions at the Mutel TT Assen track, Miller took out the Dutch MotoGP in sensational fashion.

These Wallabies now have the unenviable tag of being the first Australian team in 45 years to lose a series three-nil.

Left to a 12-lap sprint, after the race was initially red flagged due to torrential rain, the 21 yearold from Townsville surged to the front to claim a comfortable two-second victory over title leader Spaniard Marc Marquez, with Britain’s Scott Redding rounding out the podium.

It has been described as a hangover following the side’s achievement of making the World Cup final just eight months ago.

His win was the first by an independent outfit in more than a decade and he is the 12th Australian to win a MotoGP race, the first since Casey Stoner in the 2012 Australian Grand Prix.

Coach Michael Cheika has come out saying the side is not fit enough for his attacking game style which must fall back on him preparing them right.

His talents were never in doubt but his meteoric rise from Moto3 straight up into the top class of MotoGP was widely queried.

Well, they will need several Beroccas to turn things around quickly for the upcoming Bledisloe Cup clashes against New Zealand next month.

Last chance hurrah

F

or the past month before Port Adelaide went on its mid-year break we have been saying each week that this is its last chance to make a push for the finals. Now even though, the Power lost its two preceding games before taking time off, we will say it for the last time, Friday night’s home clash against Richmond is definitely their final hurrah to maintain their finals aspirations. A loss this week will see even their mathematical prospects diminish as the gap to eighth grows ever larger. However, their opponent will be in the same position. Port Adelaide should be well prepared for the Tigers’ visit and with a couple of crucial players returning will have no excuses on Friday night. Jack Hombsch will be a welcome addition to the depleted backline while after getting through one game in the SANFL, we will get the first opportunity to see key forward Jay Schulz work in tandem with improving big man Charlie Dixon since round one. Young ruck Dougal Howard will be out with his knee injury suffered against Fremantle which will mean stop-gap Jackson Trengove will have to take up much of the slack with Justin Westhoff and Dixon assisting. Brendon Ah Chee will be considered but Jared Polec didn’t do enough in the SANFL two weeks ago to earn a recall. Richmond took awhile to shake off 17th side Brisbane last week but took control midway through the second term and did as it pleased after half-time to record a seven-goal victory, not as much as many have expected. Restricting the input of in-form Tiger duo midfielder Dustin Martin and forward Jack Riewoldt looms as the telling factor to a vital home town win. Ruckman Ivan Maric will be a straight swap for Shaun Hampson who injured his knee in the closing minute of last week’s clash. Key forward Ben Griffiths (illness) and defender Jake Batchelor (hamstring soreness) will both be available after withdrawing late against the Lions. Now that the Crows have become top-four contenders they can ill afford to lower their standards when coming up against lesser

3 SPORTSBEAT // 30 JUNE 2016 opposition over coming weeks. In fact, the next two weeks against Melbourne and Carlton will be ideal for players to get suited to and enthused about playing on the MCG. In previous years, Adelaide has dropped such games but its rise up the ladder will not occur if it succumbs to the same outcome this season. They will still be tough contests, despite the ladder positions, which will force it into showing the same level of intensity and skill attention as it would for higher opposition. Players, particularly those on the fringe like Jarryd Lyons and David Mackay, even Kyle Cheney and Brad Crouch, can underline their

Footy footnotes The Crows obviously had a point to prove last week – a record 28 of them in fact. Readjusting their radar will be crucial to their premiership prospects while around the league. • The least said of the score review this week, the better! • Receiving a dreaded falcon (ball to the face) can be humiliating at the best of times but it’s even worse when it’s friendly fire from a teammate and leaves you sidelined for a whole half of football concussed as was the fate of Kangaroos Farren Ray last Thursday night • Last Friday night was only the third time that a Ross Lyon-coached side could only manage one goal by half-time – the other two occasions occurred in grand finals • Crows trade aspirations of luring Docker Lachie Neale home have been thwarted with the ball magnet re-signing with Fremantle last week for another three years – Suns duo Dion Prestia and Jaeger O’Meara appear to be the hot property at the moment but Melbourne clubs are their likely destination • Should either of the local AFL sides make a play for suspended Bomber Michael Hurley? – another strong tall defender with the versatility of pushing forward would fit both the Crows and the Power – he could join good friend Josh Jenkins at West Lakes or reacquaint himself with Paddy Ryder at Port Adelaide – classy Swans midfielder Tom Mitchell is there for the taking as well • There has been much discussion about a mid-season trade or player loan system which the AFL is even looking into but could it really work? – one thing is for sure though, local leagues must be out-ofbounds from such a trade or even mid-year

credentials for finals appearances by their performances in such encounters. The Demons will have enjoyed a fortnight from its last game against Sydney but Adelaide has basically had another break with it being 10 days since it beat North Melbourne last Thursday night. In atrocious conditions at the SCG two weeks ago, the Swans squeezed the life out of Melbourne and limited it to just four goals for the match. With no further injuries from the Kangaroos’ clash, Adelaide is more than likely to again be unchanged as well. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN draft option • Could we finally see SOSSOS debut for the Blues against Collingwood this week? – that’s son of Stephen from son of Serge or more easily known as Jack Silvagni who is the son of Carlton great Stephen and grandson of club legend Serge – will the arch-rivals get a bigger crowd than the Magpies got last week in sub-Arctic temperatures (just 5 degrees)? • Darcy Moore looks like being available again this week for Collingwood too, so is this now the end for good of Travis Cloke as a Magpie? • The Hawks are well known for their poor taste in alternative guernseys and while we know it was for charity last week, but what were they wearing – certainly not ‘Pretty in Pink’? • Former Blue Brendan Fevola is on campaign to make the Guinness Book of Records for most clubs played for – he’s been doing the Victorian country circuit since retiring from the AFL and we’ll probably see him at South Australian country clubs next • Sad to hear of further issues for former Eagle and Tiger Ben Cousins and all leading up to West Coast’s 10-year premiership reunion this weekend – North Melbourne’s 1996 premiership stars will be gathering this weekend as well, that should be interesting! • Last week we heard that one of Australia’s favourite breakfast cereals, Weet Bix, was proving all the rage in China, a regular pack selling for $50 in some parts of the country – well, it seems a professional product placement in China’s most watched soap opera did the trick – maybe this is a way for Port Adelaide to increase its popularity in its international venture – have a player appear on the show or a game pop up on a TV in the background – you never know!

AFL PREVIEW ROUND15

BY DION HAYMAN

WEST COAST V ESSENDON

GOLD COAST V ST KILDA

Essendon has surprisingly won three of its last five games against West Coast and one of them was in Perth! That was in 2013 when the Bombers came from 17 points behind at three quarter-time to win by seven points, 15.8 (98) to 13.13 (91). It was only the Bombers’ third win in 18 games against the Eagles at Subiaco. Their only other wins were in 1995 and 2001. The sides met just once last year with the Eagles winning by 50 points at home, 14.12 (96) to 6.10 (46). Mark LeCras finished with four goals and Josh Kennedy three. Essendon this week becomes the first opponent West Coast has played 50 times. The Bombers lead 27 wins to 22 though. It is a rivalry which was fostered on several finals meetings in the 1990s and fuelled by Kevin Sheedy’s famous jacket waving celebration at the MCG in 1993 when the Bombers prevailed by two points against the then reigning premiers. Essendon of course went on to win the flag that season. Essondon was good against GWS recently but this looks a tough ask against the Eagles.

Gold Coast hasn’t played St Kilda since round two last season at Carrara when the Saints won by 28 points, 16.8 (104) to 10.16 (76). Josh Bruce top scored with six goals in the win. It ended a run of two successive defeats to the Suns and gave the Saints a 5-3 winning record from their eight games against them. Five of those eight games have been played on the Gold Coast and the Saints have three wins, having also left victorious in 2011 and 2012. Gold Coast’s last home win against St Kilda was in 2014 when a four-goal haul from Tom Lynch helped steer the Suns to a 53-point win, their biggest against the Saints. None of the games between these sides have been close. The smallest margin was Gold Coast’s 13-point win at home in the opening round of the 2013 season. It was also the Suns’ first win over the Saints. Nick Riewoldt holds the goals record in this fixture with seven at Carrara in 2012. Riewoldt has kicked 22 goals in seven games against Gold Coast. The Suns join Essendon and Melbourne as the only opponents he averages more than three goals per game against.

Richmond has won five of its last seven games against Port Adelaide but the Power has won two of its last three clashes. Port’s recent wins include an emphatic 57-point win in the first elimination final at Adelaide Oval in 2014 when the Tigers were caught napping as Port slammed on 8.1 to 1.1 in the opening term. Jake Neade finished with three goals as the Power won 20.12 (132) to 11.9 (75). Port also won in round six earlier this year at the MCG by 35 points after winning every quarter. This time it was Jarman Impey who was the unlikely top scorer with three goals as Port won 13.16 (94) to 8.11 (59). Richmond is 1-1 from two games against the Power at Adelaide Oval, having beaten Port by 33 points here last year. The Port defence needs to be wary of Jack Riewoldt who has dined out on the Power to the tune of 42 goals in 12 games. St Kilda (43 goals in 12 games) is his only preferred opponent. Riewoldt’s recent returns against Port are four, six, five, three, three, four and three goals. Overall, Port leads 16 wins to 10 with one draw.

The Western Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak against Sydney when they won by four points in round five at the SCG last season. The Bullies won 11.11 (77) to 10.13 (73), having led at every change. Lance Franklin kicked a game-high three goals in a losing side. It was the Swans’ longest winning run against the Bulldogs since their record 10 in a row from 1933-38. It was also the Dogs’ first win at the SCG since 2008. The sides have now met at the SCG 26 times with Sydney leading 17 wins to nine. The Bulldogs won four in a row at the ground between 1999-2002. A home win would tie the head-to-head records between these teams at 77 wins each and one draw. The draw was at Whitten Oval in 1991 when the Dogs kicked 4.11 to the Swans’ 5.5. These sides only reached the finals together once in Footscray’s first seven decades. That was in 1942. Since then, they have done so in 1997-98-99, 2006, 2008, 2010 and last year. They have met in the major round four times with the Bulldogs winning the last three.

CARLTON V COLLINGWOOD Saturday 6.55pm, MCG

Carlton ended a six-game losing streak against Collingwood with a 15-point win at the MCG in round seven. The Magpies missed out on equalling their record streak of seven wins against Carlton – the first seven times they played the Blues from the formation of the old VFL in 1897.The Blues were last start winners 15.9 (99) to 12.12 (84) with Bryce Gibbs, Andrejs Everitt and Levi Casboult all scoring three goals. Collingwood’s Alex Fasolo top scored in the game with four. The result was the 23rd consecutive match between the sides since 2005 where the margin was 15 points or more. The last thriller between these two old rivals was in the final minor round of the 2004 season when Carlton won by a point. The outcome also extended Carlton’s overall lead in this fixture to four wins after the Magpies’ recent winning streak had threatened to square the ledger by as soon as next season. Carlton now leads 126 wins to 122 with four draws. The Magpies are also closing their margin at the MCG. At the end of 1999, Carlton led 26 wins to just nine but now the Blues lead 37 wins to 30

Adelaide draws Melbourne at the MCG for the first time since 2012 when it won in round 22 by 69 points, 22.18 (150) to 11.15 (81). Taylor Walker and Ian Callinan both scored four goals in the win as the Crows ran riot in the third quarter scoring 10.4 to 3.3. However, this fixture hasn’t always been a happy one for the Crows who trail Melbourne seven wins to six at the MCG. Their most recent reverse was in 2011 when Melbourne won by 96 points, 22.17 (149) to 8.5 (53) after Ricky Petterd and Colin Sylvia contributed four goals in a rout. The Demons led by just 14 points at half-time but scored 8.5 to 1.1 in the third term and another 8.1 to 2.1 in the last. Adelaide’s most important win in this fixture at the MCG was in the 2002 second semi-final when they beat the Demons by 12 points in a high-scoring game to win passage through to the preliminary final. Overall, the Crows lead this one 22 wins to 12. Former Demon Scott Thompson, who is nearing 300 games in a couple of weeks, only ever played against the Crows once for Melbourne at Football Park in 2003 when he collected 18 touches in a game that the home side won by 73 points.

Mid-season trades possibly on players’ agenda

T

he Idea of a mid-season trading period could be raised with players during the AFL Players’ Association’s regular mid-year tour of clubs, which began this week in Adelaide.

Although the AFLPA will have other topics, with collective bargaining negotiations expected to hot up before the end of the season as the players seek a percentage of the League’s revenue, the subject of player movement looks likely to be discussed. Players are keen to change the eligibility criteria for free agency to make it easier for players to move clubs, but the AFLPA’s policy on other ideas such as the mid-season trade period will not be clear until players are consulted.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 14

BY CHRIS KENDALL

Norwood v South Adelaide

Central District v Port Magpies

Disappointing results for both clubs last week, as they each worked into winning positions but neither were able to capitalise upon them. Norwood’s first quarter against Sturt was the killer, where a 31-point deficit at the first break left it too much to overcome in a seven-point loss. South was outscored 8.7 to 2.1 in the second half en route to a 32-point loss in an effort where it was noticeably opened up late in the game. The season is virtually over for Norwood in terms of higher honours but avoiding the wooden spoon will now become a major focus, particularly with West making a late charge off the bottom. It has been a major fall from grace for the triple premiers and South will be very mindful of an opponent keen to avoid making unwanted history in the run home. The incentive looks a lot greater for South though.

The Bulldogs bounced back from a disappointing effort against the Eagles to brutally dismiss Adelaide last week in a very even team effort that would have even brought a smile to coach Roy Laird. The bye was the ideal opportunity for Port to freshen up physically and mentally for the closing section of the season, after a mixture of strong efforts mixed with highly indifferent ones at times. Central has virtually assured itself a finals berth, being three games clear of sixth place, but a sound run home will only build confidence in a playing group that has very few premiership players remaining. The youngsters will be desperate to create their own slice of history and if Port does not have the same positive mindset it held in the middle of the season, then this could become a blow-out quickly. Most factors point to Central taking the points.

The Eagles moved ominously into premiership favoritism with a clinical dismissal of South after the main break last week, as a halftime bake from coach Michael Godden hit the mark spectacularly. West continued its late season improvement when holding off a fast finishing Glenelg, although coach Mark Mickan would still be concerned about a sluggish last quarter when his side allowed the Tigers a real sniff at victory. Despite the disparity in ladder positions, this has the hallmarks of a major upset. West has shown little until the last fortnight but some of its play has been exceptional, appearing to be relishing the pressure valve releasing from their flag defence. The Eagles will be on their guard for a similar threat, however, and while the Bloods should give a fair account, the home team has far too much to play for.

While finals are nearly out of the equation for North, finishing the season positively will be the main goal for coach Josh Carr. Turning around the mindset at Prospect has been a tough task in the last few seasons but Carr has undoubtedly stamped a real impact at the club. Adelaide is still holding down a top-five spot but efforts such as shown last week against Central will make progressing beyond the first week of finals a real task unless it can turn things around quickly. While Adelaide possesses the ball more than nearly every other club, how it uses it is open to conjecture at times, especially with a number of sideways and backwards possessions giving the opposition time to drop numbers back in defence to repel Adelaide’s attacking moves. When it goes quickly and direct to the likes of Luke Lowden and Harry Dear, it can be hard to stop but the Roosters are building toward a solid finish to the season and just get the nod here.

leni Glouftsis, the first female to umpire in an AFL pre-season and SANFL match, returns to South Australia in a one-off appearance at the North Adelaide v Adelaide match at Prospect Oval on Saturday.

Glouftsis began her career at Prospect Oval in August 2013 at the North v Glenelg clash. She has been based in Melbourne since the start of 2015, taking up a three-year appointment as an AFL Female Pathway scholarship holder. Glouftsis regularly umpires VFL League matches while also acting as an emergency umpire on the interchange bench for AFL games. It is not uncommon for AFL-listed field umpires to officiate in various state leagues, with Glouftsis also taking the reins in a NEAFL match earlier this season. She became the first female field umpire to officiate in an AFL pre-season match when she was involved in the Carlton v Essendon clash at Ikon Park in the 2016 NAB Challenge.

Golf’s gender divide over Rio and Zika

W

“We’re all excited to go to Brazil, represent our countries and be there amongst the other Olympians.”

hen it comes to golfers and their interest in competing at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, a curious gender divide is emerging which, at first glance, is counter-intuitive.

According to a recent Sports Illustrated survey, 40 per cent of LPGA Tour players said they would prefer to win a gold medal in Rio than any of this year’s four major golf championships.

While world No.1 Jason Day and fourthranked Rory McIlroy are among several big names who have already opted out of Rio, not a single women’s player has yet withdrawn from global sport’s showpiece.

In contrast, 29 per cent of PGA Tour players expressed a preference for winning gold over the season’s final major, the PGA Championship, and that percentage would likely have been lower if the Masters, US Open and British Open had factored in.

“We’re all excited to go to Brazil, represent our countries and be there amongst the other Olympians.”

Surprisingly, 62 per cent of PGA Tour players rated the Players Championship, which is not a major, above Olympic success. American Matt Kuchar, a seven-times winner on the PGA Tour who is ranked 17th in the world, summed up the ambivalence of his peers over golf’s return to the Olympics.

Both Day and McIlroy have cited Zika fears as their prime reason for pulling out, saying they were unwilling to put either themselves or their families at risk from a mosquito-borne virus which can cause crippling birth defects. Yet even though pregnant women appear to be most vulnerable to the virus, LPGA players have enthusiastically embraced golf’s return to the Olympics after an absence of more than a century. For Lydia Ko, the top-ranked women’s golfer, the thrill of being part of the Olympics trumps any fear over Zika.

Leading women’s golfer, Lydia Ko, is looking forward to the Rio Olympics. Photo: AAP. “It’s more important that we enjoy Rio and we’re excited about it and all the girls I’ve talked to, that’s kind of the response,” said the New Zealander.

“Most of the Olympic sports have their ‘big event’ once every four years with the World Cups and world championships that go on,” Kuchar said. “In the golf world, we have our four majors ... then every other week there is a big event going on with major attention. The fact that we have an event every week, the Olympics will be another event.” BY MARK LAMPORT-STOKES – AAP

Langer would love to coach again

J

“Life is timing. I was lucky to get the timing for the job.

ustin Langer is keen to reprise his role as caretaker coach of Australia but only if it’s at the behest of Darren Lehmann.

a youthful squad learned plenty in two losses then lifted another trophy with consecutive knockout wins.

This month Lehmann took a break from his side’s relentless schedule, handing the reins to Western Australia coach Langer for an ODI triseries in the West Indies.

The former Test opener was a picture of happiness after Australia’s 58-run win in the decider, detailing how he loved every minute of the trip.

Langer, widely regarded as Lehmann’s likely successor, impressed players with his insight and approach during the tour.

“But the reality is there’s not a job going,” Langer said.

Lehmann has publicly stated he’d like to keep coaching until 2019, when Australia travels to England for its World Cup defence and an Ashes series.

“That’s cool because I go home to another great job that I love.

BY ROB FORSAITH – AAP

His internship was a success on the park too;

“It’s all about timing. If it comes up down the track and Boof wants to have another tour off somewhere down the track, I’d love to do it.”

Gullies maintain presence T

ea Tree Gully has ensured the top two was aware of its presence following a definitive victory over Rostrevor OC last week.

Reds Wade Thompson, Cameron Graetz and Adam Perryman will be out to maintain their dominance atop the Division 1 ladder, after another impressive performance in defeating Adelaide University by 62 points.

The Gullies were at their controlling best as Trent Melville, Josh Hand and Alex McKay dictated play from the outset.

The Blacks fell from fifth spot following the loss and will be looking to elevate themselves back when at Henley this week.

It is not as if ROCs is a below average unit either but no-one was on their game last week and it has ultimately seen the demise of previously successful State coach Sean Jackson being relieved of his post mid-season.

Goodwood Saints jumped into the top five under unfortunate circumstances when its clash with Unley Mercedes Jets had to be halted in the second quarter due to a horrific player injury.

Tea Tree Gully could even receive a greater contest from a side battling demotion in Port District this week.

Players were not capable of continuing the game and the result was mutually agreed to stand at that point.

The Gullies cannot afford to relax thinking otherwise, particularly after the Magpies showed they were an improving outfit against Salisbury North last week but just not putting four quarters together.

The Saints host Rostrevor OC this week and the Jets will head to Payneham Oval to face the Falcons.

The Hawks took until the final term to gain any ascendancy over Port District which led right up to the early moments of the last quarter. Salisbury North, though, ran over the top of its opponent late, kicking six goals to two to claim a handy 21-point victory to stay in touch with the top five. Ben Wiles, Paul Dreimann and Alex Stengle won’t want to give this week’s opposition Prince Alfred OC the same latitude.

Hawks in all-out attack mode

I

t was all-out attack for Modbury last week as it further highlighted its authority as ladder leader in Division 2 with a compelling 100-point victory over Scotch OC. It will be a nervous trip for PHOS Camden to face the likes of James Baron, Tim Davey and Michael Bennett from the Hawks this week as it attempts to keep its finals aspirations alive. The Phantoms may lament their demoralising two-point loss to St Peters OC last week as to why they probably won’t make the finals. While last week’s performance would not have had much of an effect physically on the Scotch OC group, it would have impacted on it mentally which is where coach Ian Steel must re-gather focus for SMOSH West Lakes on Saturday. Broadview benefited greatest from Scotch OC’s fall from grace, leaping into fifth spot following

its own thumping 94-point victory over the Lions. It was a week when everything went right for once beleaguered Broadview which received a bonus after Old Ignatians self-reported a couple of APPS breaches so the points were awarded to its two opponents on those occasions in Broadview and PHOS Camden. Tiger contingent Peter Elfenbein, Matthew Kemp and Ben Bamford will hope to maintain the momentum against Portland on Saturday. The Thunder would have been disappointed they didn’t claim a big scalp last week, going down to Old Ignatians by only 11 points. Old Iggies Will Abbott, David Boyd and Edward Vagnarelli will need to back up their good form this week in a clash that could determine their chances of finishing second. Sacred Heart OC can practically seal the spot

by gaining a wider buffer itself, also thanks to its weekend opponent’s self-reporting. Gaza would have been happy with SHOC’s inaccuracy last week as it allowed it to claim a much-needed two-point triumph. The Eagles’ pressure put their opponent off on numerous occasions. Trent Wilson, Tom Camp and Rhys Jones will have to show similar intensity on Saturday against St Peters OC to remain in finals contention. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Rams, Chics in relegation battle

G

epps Cross and Kilburn occupy the bottom two positions on the ladder. But their battle this week will give the winner some hope to avoid relegation. Gepps Cross went down to Mitcham by 42 points but had only two fewer scoring shots. Jason Mordaunt, Mark Boothey and Gavin Rose were among the best. Kilburn was no match for Walkerville at Walkerville to go down by 42 points. Jesse Rogerson, Scott Galbraith and James O’Loughlin led the way. Gepps Cross can hit back here by 16-32 points. Flinders Park and Athelstone look set for a top contest at Flinders Park in a third versus top match. The Reds had no answer to Seaton Ramblers last week, going down by 60 points with Walter Wilson, Kieran Johanson and Daniel Blythe leading the way. Athelstone is flying and beating most sides easily. Last week it crushed Plympton by 76 points with Pelle Biancardi

(four goals), Heath Fitzpatrick and Sam Ritchie leading the way. Despite playing away the Raggies can win by 10-26 points. Pembroke Old Scholars and Mitcham meet in another high-table clash as second meets fourth. Pembroke just got out of gaol against Golden Grove by a point last week. Ryan Marini (three goals), Fraser Pinkney and Jaiden Pengelly (four goals) played well. Mitcham was solid in beating Gepps Cross by 42 points last week. Daniel Hardy, Ben Geytenbeek (six goals) and Daniel Loots played well. The Kings by 14-28 points. Plympton and Golden Grove are sixth and seventh on the ladder and face a crucial game this Saturday. The Bulldogs were crushed by Athelstone last week by 76 points, Brodie McLeod, Stuart Tavener and Heath Deer among the best for Plympton. Golden Grove went within a point of upsetting Pembroke OS

last week, kicking 19.4 to 18.11. Sam Scudds, Matt Pendlington and Corey Pressler stood tall for the Kookaburras. The Grove can get up by 18-30 points. Walkerville, eighth, hosts Seaton Ramblers, fifth. The improving Cats beat Kilburn by 42 points as Ryan Stacey, Stuart Callary and Chris Scholefield (six goals) stood out. The Rams impressed with a solid 10-goal win against Flinders Park with Todd Gates, Luke Granleese and Daniel Polanski (four goals) among the leading lights. orth Haven, buoyed by a solid win against Edwardstown, is looking to keep on its winning way at home against Colonel Light Gardens. The Magpies finished strongly to beat Towns last week with Mark Rowe, Ross Merrett and Brett Pederson among the stars. The win put the Magpies in the mix for the double chance. Colonel Light Gardens had the bye last week and before that beat Hope Valley by 22 points with Corey Knight, Nicholas Belfield and Try Corey playing well and Anthony Lynch kicking four goals. The home ground should see a North Haven win by 28-40 points. Pooraka and Eastern Park are quite a bit apart on the ladder with the Bulls hoping to keep in touch with the top five and the Demons aiming to hold top place. Pooraka was far too strong for Kenilworth last week with Adam Nitschke, Matthew Facey and Joseph Romeo among the stars. Darren Sharp also played a big part with nine goals. Eastern Park didn’t give Salisbury a chance by winning by 99 points last week, Matthew Paul, Corey Coad and Alex Haughey (three goals) leading a long list of top players, while Chris Knapp kicked six

Salisbury and Edwardstown will look to rebound from last-round losses when they meet at Salisbury. The Magpies had few good players in their big loss to Eastern Park with Geoff Tume, Matthew Fleming and Jay Mansfield leading the way. Towns ran out of steam against North Haven on Saturday when they lost by 30

Westminster Old Scholars hosts Kenilworth in a second versus bottom clash which doesn’t hold out much hope for the Kookaburras. Westminster was solid in running away from Hope Valley last week with Mark Rusby, Jared Shattock and James Reu all doing their bit. Kenilworth is finding most sides too strong, last week going down to Pooraka by 85 points at home. Blake Moser, Nicholas Chesser and Andrew Liverton battled hard. Lockleys out to leash Hounds

L

ockleys will be out to show that it must be considered among the premiership fancies when it tackles Blackfriars OS this week. Unyielding Demons haunted fourth side Smithfield last week to suggest the flag fight was down to three in Division 5. They will though need to account for the Hounds on Saturday to remain a contender themselves or it will become a battle between two.

at home against CBCOC. The Dolphins had a tough contest against fellow collegiate outfit Pulteney but came away with a favourable result, succeeding by 19 points. They need to continue winning to remain in the top five so Tyson Williams, Jarrad MacDonald and Josef Builder cannot let their teammates drop their efforts.

The influence of Hayden Martinello, Kade Boase and Kane Murphy for Lockleys will prove crucial again.

Greenacres stepped out of relegation contention last week, beating Rosewater in a real scuffle by 13 points and could regain a finals sniff by defeating Pulteney on Saturday.

The usual suspects of Matthew Brincat, Aron Fechner and Matthew Rivett among others at Blackfriars OS are still the group that needs restricting for the Demons to be victorious.

It is still a tough ask to see the Dragons pinch a top-five berth but should those just above them waver then don’t expect them to have to wait for an invitation.

It was an out-of-character performance from Smithfield last week, losing by 71 points, and it is sure to come out ready to atone this week

It will be up to the likes of Peter Smith, Ben Rawlings and Steven Taylor for Greenacres to see it happen.

Rosewater’s unexpected loss was a step or two back in its pursuit of the top five and now faces a difficult task to stay in touch with ladder leader Hectorville visiting Eric Sutton Oval on Saturday. These Hounds limited the run and ball use of Elizabeth last week and Julian Leek, Daniel Sauerwald and Sam Ritchie should be able to do the same to the Bulldogs. Glenunga is just like Greenacres but a loss to Elizabeth this week could bring it back into the relegation equation.

Hawks aim to avoid Bulldogs’ bite

W

est Croydon and Ingle Farm looks to be one of the best matches of the minor round so far in a top versus third match up.

The Hawks have done most things right this season, unbeaten including a draw and a big win against Adelaide Lutheran last week, Luke Woodcock shining with eight goals. Ingle Farm held out Trinity Old Scholars by 21 points with Zach Hancock standing tall for the Bulldogs. The Hawks look good by 20-34 points. Fitzroy and Brahma Lodge lock horns in an eighth against fourth contest. The Lions crashed against Mitchell Park last week Wyatt McKinnon their best. Brahma Lodge, last week beat Houghton Districts by 45 points. Dene Steele led the Tiger stars. Brahma Lodge should have the answers here by 38-54 points. Houghton Districts has the home ground but it may need more than that against second side Woodville South. The Raiders, ninth with three wins, saw a good game from Alex Bray in their 45-point loss to Braham Lodge Last week. Woodville South was too polished for Mawson Lakes last week in its 44-point win. Laurence Gosling led the way. The Cats can strike again by 44-42 points.

Mawson Lakes and Adelaide Lutheran are in sixth and bottom places respectively but in a quirk of the ladder are still in the hunt for the finals. The Saints went down to Woodville South by 44 points last week with Andy Carr among his side’s best. Adelaide Lutheran lost to West Croydon by 87 points last week with Jacob Stollznow a handy player for the Bulldogs. The Saints look good here by 28-42 points. Trinity Old Scholars and Mitchell Park present an interesting game at Trinity College. In the clash of the lions both sides showed good form last week, Trinity not far away in a 21-point loss to Ingle Farm with Dylan Winning best. Bulldogs can make late run

C

entral United has positioned itself to make a late run at the finals and faces perhaps its deciding contest this week.

The Bulldogs blew Payneham Norwood Union away last week to boost percentage and ready themselves for the challenge ahead. They face Adelaide University on Saturday in a must-win clash to keep their opportunity moving forward. Chris McConnachy, Ryan Collins and Josh McKenna were uncompromising in Central United’s 111-point victory over the Falcons last week. St Pauls OS, fourth, will be keen to see the result of this encounter, considering its desire to make the finals. The Saints will initially need to maintain their focus on the other University side on Saturday when the Crabs venture north. They also had a whopping win last week,

annihilating finals prospect Unley Mercedes Jets by 95 points. Ryan Smiech sent 12 goals through the big sticks while Liam Davies and Matthew Rowson continued their good form for St Pauls OS. Flinders University will be coming off the bye. The Jets should be forthright with their response to last week’s demise against the winless Payneham Norwood Union on Saturday. Rounding out round 13 will probably see North Pines beset with more struggles as Prince Alfred OC treks to Andrew Smith Reserve. The Redbacks were overwhelmed by top side Salisbury West in a brutal 140-point rout and could be in for another this week. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Mitchell inspired by hero

At 17, Mitchell had already made the Australian under-19 team and senior national selection was well within her reach. However, in the same year she represented Australia at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona where she lead the 4x400m relay team to eighth in the final and finished fourth herself in a 400m semi-final. From that point, Mitchell was motivated to follow in her childhood hero Cathy Freeman’s footsteps and chose athletics over netball to chase her own Olympic dream. Mitchell’s abilities were further highlighted when she again made the 400m semi-finals at a major meet, this time the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and also placed fourth in the final of the 4x400m relay. With a new coach since last year’s IAAF World Championships, she has shed three kilos off an already lean body and added more muscle to improve her power over the enduring lap race.

Yet to reach her peak, she can only improve, particularly on her one of her greatest achievements so far in beating crack Jamaican duo of Christine Day and Kaliese Spencer at the IAAF World Challenge meet in her hometown of Melbourne in March this year. While Rio may be too early to achieve the ultimate individual success to emulate her hero and now mentor, making the final is a goal well within her capabilities at this time. Mitchell continues to run personal best times in the lead-up to the Games, finishing third in a stunning Diamond League debut in Birmingham earlier this month.
