h how it could have been so different for those sides outside the top eight, especially Port Adelaide and St Kilda, if they had taken their chances when presented. As we saw last weekend, it is just a fine line between the top sides and those lower on the ladder with Carlton and Melbourne succumbing to six-point losses to premiership hopefuls Sydney and West Coast respectively. The Power and the Saints could even be finals contenders now inside the eight if results where they had lost by less than 10 points had been reversed. Port Adelaide has experienced three defeats under 10 points to the Blues, West Coast and the Western Bulldogs and also stretched top four sides Hawthorn and GWS Giants for three quarters. The Power could have been as high as fifth if these close results had gone their way. This is where the frustration must build even further for coach Ken Hinkley, his staff, the players and the fans alike.

It would be a similar thing at St Kilda which could have benefited from narrow wins over North Melbourne and the Bulldogs instead of narrow losses. The Hawks have shown how it is done this season, winning five games by 10 points or less and yet to lose a close contest. Turn those matches around and they wouldn’t be sitting on top of the ladder, but more likely down in eighth. That’s just how the game goes I suppose but it shows how intricate the competition has become. If players had exerted a little more effort when in tight situations then we could have had a different premiership ladder. Perhaps it simply highlights which sides can handle themselves better in these tough circumstances. No doubt Hinkley hopes his players will learn from such cases and in the future be the side that turns them into favourable outcomes. Your position is where you want to make it. The Saints have risen to ninth just one win from North Melbourne in

THUMBS UP

While Australia’s best result in the Tour de France was a fifth placing for Richie Porte, a good effort considering the toughness of the three-week long event, the Aussie did still celebrate success at the Champs-Elysees. Sprinter Chloe Hosking won the Le Course by Le Tour in Paris last weekend, an 89km elite women’s cycling race coinciding with the men’s final stage. Hosking, who rides professionally for the Wiggle High5 team, out-sprinted Lotta Lepisto and multiple world champion Marianne Vos to claim victory in one of the most iconic places in international cycling and in just the third edition of the race. It was her fourth victory of the year after she won a stage of the women’s Giro d’Italia this month, at the Tour of Chongming Island in May and Tour of Qatar in February so she will be one of the riders to beat at the Rio Olympics next month and the world championships in Qatar in October.

BEATBOX eighth spot, on the back of seven wins from nine matches, including a close victory defeating Geelong by three points. If they can continue their run, there is nothing to stop them from pushing the Kangaroos out. Their first requirement will be to beat North Melbourne this week then things will certainly get interesting with St Kilda having a much better draw than the Kangaroos. The Power’s hopes have reduced following their loss to the Giants last week but surprisingly they are not totally out of contention. They must now rely on the Saints losing more games as well as the Kangaroos while manufacturing at least one win over top eight sides Sydney or Adelaide to slide in. It seems a tough challenge but nothing is out of the question with how this season has transpired. It is even getting interesting as to how the rest of the top eight works itself out, particularly the top four with the Crows right in the mix. It could all come down to a deciding Showdown for both sides – bring it on!

THUMBS Down

The Rio Olympic Games are only a week away but there are still several major issues arising before they have even started.

Australian Chef de mission Kitty Chiller has raised concerns about the safety and hygiene surrounding the athletes in the Olympic Village, describing it as the worst athletes’ village in Games history. Athletes were due to begin entering the village this week but were being re-directed to hotels until serious plumbing, electrical and cleaning problems were fixed. Other teams, including those from Britain and New Zealand, were also reporting similar problems. This is the latest problem for the troubled games, which have been hit by the Zika virus, security threats, water pollution, and severe budget cuts. Not a good start to an event with the eyes of the world watching.

Running into form

A

3 SPORTSBEAT // 28 JULY 2016 It will also be Bombers coach John Worsfold’s first time facing the Crows since coming to the side’s aid in its time of need last season. There are some injury worries around West Lakes too with skipper Taylor Walker hampered by an ankle injury and key defender Daniel Talia a corked hip.

delaide’s loss to Geelong last week highlighted that even with almost a full squad to pick from coach Don Pyke is still trying to find the combination to make his side a dominant top-four contender.

Neither should be risked, especially with who Adelaide is playing.

Rewarding fringe players for previous good performances, like Pyke did with Ricky Henderson last week, probably erred as it meant his side lost a key factor as to why the Crows hoodoo at Kardinia Park continued – that being a lack of outside run.

Big forward Harry Dear or recently elevated rookie Reilly O’Brien could debut if ‘Tex’ fails to get through the week.

The omission of both Paul Seedsman and David Mckay reduced Adelaide’s run on the outside of the packs and much needed breaking the line abilities. There were too many players trying to compete for the ball and no-one on the outside to receive it which allowed the Cats to run away too easily. Henderson may be capable of racking up the possessions but he can be too stop-start with his reactions, allowing opposition players to fill in the gaps, instead of playing on quickly to a moving player or generating run himself. However, it is not the main reason the Crows lost another crucial encounter, which may have cost them a top-two spot, but it is important that Pyke finds the right mix so his side can become the premiership threat it wants to be. Last Saturday night Adelaide was just off its best. The narrow confines of the Cattery did not suit Adelaide either as Geelong was able to instil tireless pressure on its Crows opponents which prevented them from gaining any space or run. Disappointingly at the same time, Adelaide did not help itself offering a work rate lower than was required and not spreading fast enough to give teammates the chance to move the ball quickly. Fortunately the next few weeks will present the Crows with the opportunity to improve these and other areas of their game against the AFL’s struggling sides at the moment. It starts with Essendon at Adelaide Oval on Sunday evening followed by Brisbane at home and Fremantle away before a crucial Showdown that will have a major impact on where the side finishes at the end of the minor round.

Pyke must also consider bringing back one or both of Seedsman or McKay while Wayne Milera would be in the discussions as well.

Mitch McGovern and Henderson could also be on the chopping block but McGovern may be an option to move back to defence if Talia doesn’t come up, like his brother Jeremy has done successfully for West Coast. Port Adelaide has a trip to the Gabba on

Footy footnotes It is set to be a weekend of individual accolades across the league this week. • Highest plaudits goes to little Kangaroo Brent Harvey who breaks Michael Tuck’s VFL/AFL games record on Saturday night – reaching a remarkable 427th game in today’s era – but a surprising note of congratulations came from WWE superstar A J Styles during the week – it seems in the wrestler’s time in the lesser known TNA wrestling federation, Styles visited Arden Street on a promotional tour in 2012 when he first meet ‘Boomer’ • Harvey is still chasing Glenelg legend Peter Carey’s all-time elite record of 448 games in the SANFL which he’ll need to go on next year to break • Other top honours this week include 350th game for Dockers’ hero Matthew Pavlich, 300th for Geelong star James Bartel and club games record for fellow Cat star Corey Enright (326) • Power stars Travis Boak and Robbie Gray were compared to soccer great Neymar and tennis legend Serena Williams last weekend when Nike tweeted an ad around the globe saying, “Robbie Gray, Neymar, Travis Boak, and Serena weren’t born champions. They had to earn it. #justdoit” and linked it to their baby photos as well as those of Chad Wingard, Marcus Bontempelli along with stories about how they got to where they are today • It seems that it was more Crow Josh

Saturday night to face a happier Brisbane lineup after recording its first win in 14 weeks. The Power have had a chequered past at the Gabba as well but one would expect them to be too good for the home side this week. The important thing that coach Ken Hinkley would be stressing was to play four quarters of football. They have matched some good sides throughout the season, including GWS Giants last week, but lapses have proved costly. While finals cannot be in their thoughts, they remain a slim possibility, but they depend more on other results than just their own now. It may be the time for Hinkley to further test his squad and see if the likes of first gamers Jesse Palmer and Riley Bonner are up to it while also giving Jimmy Toumpas and Sam Colquhoun more game time to impress. It is all about the future now for Port Adelaide. But yes I’m fine with lobster tonight mate.” – fellow teammate Tom Lynch suggested it was Jenkin’s next shout at the bar • Thought it was easy for AFL footballers to find girlfriends but not so for Blues pair Jed Lamb and Kristian Jaksch who have put out requests on Twitter for dates to the club’s best and fairest – it seems to follow in the same vein as the movie “Mike and Dave need Wedding Dates” • Horrific to see Bulldog Mitch Wallis break his leg last week and also Jack Redpath succumb to another knee injury and requiring a third knee reconstruction (although it will be his first in the right knee) – wishing them both all the best in their recoveries and comebacks to the game – have these injuries now cost the Bulldogs their chance at the premiership? • Former Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin only retired from Richmond last week but he is already stepping into the coaching ranks, taking the reins at under-18’s side Oakleigh Chargers against the Northern Knights this Sunday – he has been acting as a specialist coach under regular coach Mick Stinear during the season

AFL PREVIEW ROUND19 BY DION HAYMAN

Geelong v Western Bulldogs

COLLINGWOOD V WEST COAST

Geelong and the Western Bulldogs play another match crucial to the outcome of the top four. However, it could spell trouble for the Bulldogs who have been beaten in their last nine games by the Cats. That’s now just two wins shy of Geelong’s 11-game club record winning run against the Bulldogs from 1988-94. Their most recent defeat came just six weeks ago when the Cats were on target scoring 16.4 (100) to the Bulldogs’ 5.13 (43). Daniel Menzel and Tom Hawkins both scored four goals as the Cats had the game in the bag at halftime leading 10.3 to 1.9. The Bullies last beat Geelong in 2009 by 14 points at Docklands. The Cats have won their last six home games against the Dogs who haven’t won at Geelong since 2003 – the last of five successive wins at the ground. Geelong now leads 41 wins to 13 at the Cattery with one draw in 1957.

West Coast has won its last three in a row against Collingwood – its best run against the Magpies since winning nine straight from 1994-99. The Eagles’ recent wins have been conclusive too, winning by 60 points at Subiaco in 2014 when Scott Lycett and Jack Darling both scored four goals, by 31 points at Docklands in 2015 when Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras scored three apiece and by 62 points in round six at Subiaco with Kennedy (3.6), LeCras and Jamie Cripps all scoring three goals. The Pies last beat the Eagles in 2014 at the MCG by eight points after trailing at every change of ends. Collingwood though has won its last nine in a row against West Coast at the MCG where the Eagles trail 10 wins to one. Their only success came in 1995 when they won by four points. However, the Eagles lead overall 24 wins to 22 with one draw.

Saturday 1.15pm, Manuka Oval GWS has yet to beat Richmond in five attempts. Their first three matches were all at the Sydney Showgrounds. A wayward Richmond won by 12 points in 2012, 11.20 (86) to 12.2 (74). A year later the Tigers won by 121 points with five goals from Aaron Edwards. In 2014, Jack Riewoldt went to town on the Giants booting 11.2 as his side won by 113 points. Their most recent two meetings have both been at the MCG. Richmond won their second clash in 2014 by 27 points. Then last year, the Giants threatened to break through after leading at every change, even by 15 points at three quarter-time. However, the Tigers finished with 5.6 to 2.0 to win by nine points, 10.18 (78) to 10.9 (69). Richmond has never played an AFL match before in Canberra. GWS has already beaten Geelong and Port at Manuka this season but has still won only five of 14 games at the ground.

Port has won three of its last four games against Brisbane including a comprehensive 77-point win against the Lions in round seven earlier this year at Adelaide Oval. Brisbane led by nine points at quarter-time but was thereafter outscored 18.9 to 3.13. Charlie Dixon finished with five goals while Chad Wingard, Justin Westhoff and Aaron Young all scored three. Brisbane had won its previous game against Port which was in round seven last year at the Gabba where the Lions won by 37 points, 15.12 (102) to 8.17 (65), with three goals from Josh Green and Mitch Robinson. The Lions have now won their last three home games against Port who haven’t won at the Gabba since 2007. After 15 games at the ground, Brisbane leads nine wins to four with two draws.

Hawthorn has won its last 13 games against Carlton – a club record against the Blues. Carlton last beat Hawthorn in 2005 by six points at Docklands. Carlton has just two survivors from that game in Kade Simpson and Andrew Walker while the Hawks retain Luke Hodge, Jordan Lewis and Sam Mitchell. Hawthorn led at every change in that match but Carlton came from 18 points back at three quarter-time to score 6.3 to 2.3 in the final term. It was its second win in a row against the Hawks but the Blues have won just two of their last 20 games against them. The sides met twice last year. Hawthorn won by 138 points in round 17 at Docklands after Jack Gunston booted six goals. They then also won by 57 points in round 23 at the MCG with Gunston and Jarryd Roughead scoring four.

North Melbourne has won its last five games in a row against St Kilda – their best run against the Saints since winning eight in a row from 1998-2003. The Saints last beat North at Docklands in 2011 by 65 points in which Nick Riewoldt scored five goals and Stephen Milne four. Since then, North has won by an average of 40 points but was lucky to escape with the win when they last met in round seven. The Roos won 11.16 (82) to 11.9 (75) but St Kilda drew level with a rushed behind at the 23-minute mark before a Todd Goldstein behind and Mason Wood’s controversial goal after the siren won it for North. Wood milked the shot clock which showed there were more seconds left for him to shoot at goal than there were in the game. After 154 meetings, both sides have 76 wins and two draws.

AFL PREMIERSHIP LADDER

Melbourne has won its last two games against Gold Coast giving it five wins from seven outings against the Suns. The Demons won in round seven at Carrara, overcoming a bright start from the Suns who led by 11 points at quarter-time and were still within five points at half-time. The Demons though piled on 16.9 to 6.1 from the beginning of the third term onwards to run away with a 73-point win, 24.16 (160) to 14.3 (87). It was their highest score against the Suns. The Demons finished with eight multiple goal-kickers including three goals from Jeff Garlett, James Harmes and Cameron Pedersen. The Suns last beat Melbourne in 2014 at the MCG by eight points. The Suns also won there in 2013 but the Demons lead three wins to two at home.

The Dockers won 10.9 (69) to 7.18 (60), having led at every change. Michael Walters and Hayden Ballantyne both scored three goals. The Dockers also won at Subiaco in round four last year by 14 points with a similar score-line. Fremantle won 11.8 (74) to 8.12 (60) with three goals from Matthew Pavlich. Sunday 4.10pm, Adelaide Oval Adelaide will be eyeing some potentially vital percentage when it takes on lowly Essendon at Adelaide Oval. The Crows will fancy a repeat of their last meeting at Docklands in round 20 last year when they won by 112 points, 27.9 (171) to 8.11 (59). Eddie Betts kicked five goals that day as Adelaide carved a 58-point lead by the last change and added another 11.1 to 2.1 in the last term. However, that has still not been the Crows’ biggest win over the Bombers which came in round 10, 2006 when they won by 138 points at Football Park, 30.8 (188) to 6.14 (50). Trent Hentschel scored eight goals in that match. Essendon has won two of its last three against the Crows though. One of those wins was in Adelaide – an opening round win at Football Park in 2013. This is Essendon’s first game against the Crows at Adelaide Oval where the Bombers have recorded one win and one loss from their two clashes against Port Adelaide at the ground.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 18

BY CHRIS KENDALL

North Adelaide v Central District

West Adelaide v South Adelaide

Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda Stadium Live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SAnFL App

Saturday 2.10pm, prospect oval Live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SAnFL App

The end of 2016 cannot come fast enough for the Bloods after another thumping, this time at the hands of a rampant Sturt. Too many key players are way down on their best and the younger troops are still learning the trade and having a baptism of fire. South is assured of a finals berth after a solid win over Central but will be working towards avenging the disappointment of its 2014 September exit. Despite being at home, there is next to no case that can be made for West here. It is baffling to see so many very good players so short of their best and the temptation must be strong for coach Mark Mickan to start blooding the kids. No such issues for the Panthers except complacency and mentor Brad Gotch will be too mindful to allow such a lapse. This could be another ugly day for West.

The Roosters may be out of finals contention but finishing the season full of running would be justifiable reward for a much improved year under coach Josh Carr. Central is suddenly looking a little vulnerable in the top five and cannot afford to drop this one, particularly with Port and Glenelg suddenly making late charges that looked seemingly impossible five weeks ago. North will need to close down the hard edged Bulldog midfield, with Magarey Medal prospects Travis Schiller and Chris Jansen two of the prime movers that Carr will need to close down if his side is to be a chance. The Roosters, however, have more than enough match winners on their day that can turn a game quickly, with Jordie McKenzie continuing to impress in his first season since crossing from Melbourne. There is a real nagging feeling to pick North here, but will just lean to Central as it has more to play for.

TIP: South Adelaide 73-84

TIP: Central District 1-12

Woodville/West Torrens v Sturt

Port Magpies v Adelaide

It’s the match-of-the-round with reward for the winner being top of the ladder by 5pm Saturday. The Eagles overcame Adelaide to strengthen their credentials for the flag in an impressive, hard running display. Sturt was never threatened after half-time when thumping a dispirited West, led by the multi-pronged attack of Kory Beard, Ben Hansen and Jack Penfold. There will be so many key battles here setting the tone of the game that the match looms as an SANFL purist’s dream. Around the ball, the chance of Eagle James Boyd going head to head with Magarey medallist Zane Kirkwood is mouth-watering and Sturt’s Jack Osborn squaring off against Jared Redden in ruck will be a major catalyst for both teams. In a real toss of the coin, the Eagles may just hold the edge at home.

The SANFL showdown suddenly assumes major proportions in the Channel Seven game-of-the-week, with Port on a late run for finals and Adelaide trying to snatch the double chance. Sitting two games back in fourth place makes it imperative to win most of its remaining matches and hope for a late slip by South, while Port being a game and percentage back in sixth from Central means it also cannot afford any more lapses. While the talent at Adelaide cannot be doubted, its ability to concentrate for a full four quarters is still questionable and against a Magpie outfit on home turf, this could prove a dangerous combination. The elevation of ruckman Reilly O’Brien from the rookie list also suggests the SANFL team will lose one of the more dominant big men in the competition sometime soon, further leaving a slight door ajar for Port. It may be enough for the Magpies to grab the win.

Masters champ Willett looking to improve

S

ince winning the Masters in April, Danny Willett has taken his green jacket to Wimbledon, thrown out the first pitch at a New York Yankees game and enjoyed the celebrity that goes with being a major champion.

“Yeah, like I said before, it’s time to move on a little bit from what we did in April. It was fantastic and yeah, it’s changed my life, but we need to get back to the kind of form that we took into that week and hopefully then move forward.”

Add in fatherhood and it’s been a couple of fun months. He has played in seven tournaments since winning at Augusta and has only one top-10 finish, a third at the BMW PGA Championship in his native England on the European Tour.

The weather - other than the heat - should not be a problem this week. The battle will be to find the fairways on this tree-lined venue and the centre of the rolling greens at this course that last played host to the PGA in 2005, when Phil Mickelson won with a fourunder total.

He tied for 37th in the US Open, finished tied for 53rd in the British Open and missed three cuts. The goal for this week at the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club is to get his game going again.

“I think if you finish anywhere near, I don’t know, 6-, 7-, -under par, personally I think that would be a very good golf score for four rounds around this golf course,” Willett said. It is back to business for Masters champ Danny Willett who will tee off at next week’s Olympic Games. Photo: AAP

SAAFL says well done and thanks to our umpires

T

his year’s Umpires Appreciation Round takes place this weekend (July 30), with the Channel 9 Adelaide Football League keen to recognise the more than 700 umpires who take to the field every weekend to officiate more than 120 games of football. The field, boundary and goal umpires for these games are made up of panel umpires (who are appointed by the League and attend trainings at Aldi Arena), recreational umpires (who are appointed by the League but unable to train) and club umpires (who are organised by the clubs). Ch9AFL CEO John Kernahan said the concept

“You look at the weather conditions which were pretty brutal over there,” Willett said. “Rory (McIlroy) was the tee time behind us and I think he finished the best from our side at 4 under, I think. To shoot the scores at the boys shot would have been virtually impossible from the times that we played.”

Willett’s golf game is another story.

“I think it’s settled down a bit now. ... We are trying to get back down to work and knuckle down because we have got a very important second half of the season coming up,” said the 28-year-old Willett, who will play in the Olympics and Ryder Cup this year.

Willett never had a chance in the British Open, simply based on tee time. He had an afternoon draw in the opening round, got the worst of the weather and never recovered.

of Umpires Appreciation Round aimed to acknowledge the vital role umpires played in community football. “The League and its clubs are mindful that without umpires, we have no games,’’ he said. “It is important to support the ongoing development and recruitment of umpires by providing an environment where the umpires know they are appreciated for their efforts.” All games on the weekend will see players line up to shake hands with the officiating umpires before each game. The Ch9AFL website (www.adelaidefootball.com.au and Facebook page will feature stories on the

League’s umpires each day in the lead up to the weekend. Umpiring manager Colin Rowston was grateful for the League’s support of its umpires. “It is because of what the League has done for umpires that the number of panel umpires has grown substantially in recent times,’’ he said. “With over 40 new faces to the field umpiring panel alone this year, we now provide League-appointed field umpires in Division 1 to 7 games, 1 Reserves to 4 Reserves games, Under 18 games and women’s games. Furthermore our numbers in the boundary and goal umpiring ranks have increased. By recruiting strongly and keeping our experienced umpires involved, the depth and quality of umpiring will only improve.” For more details about Umpires Appreciation Round and umpiring with the Ch9AFL, go to league’s website and Facebook page.

Hawks must stay on track I

t has been a rollercoaster season for Salisbury North but if it is to remain on track for a finals berth then it must beat fifthplaced Adelaide University this week.

The Sharks though are sure to put up a challenge to the Magpies if they have any aspirations of avoiding demotion themselves. Port District’s Damian Coulthard, Jason Nyskohus and James Batty will have to shut them down early.

The Hawks are currently one win behind the Blacks so a further loss would make it even more difficult for them to realise their finals objective.

Payneham Norwood Union hosting Tea Tree Gully should be another hotly fought contest this week.

Before last week’s break in Division 1, Adelaide University pulled off a confidenceboosting victory over second-placed Payneham Norwood Union so belief will be high moving towards September.

The Falcons will be out to redeem themselves from their shock loss two weeks ago and push towards regaining the top mantle. The Gullies will have their own expectations of finishing higher and Alex McKay, Blake Penney and Adam Maschotta will be out to prove they are still flag contenders.

At home, the Blacks’ Michael Taylor, Seb Paynter and Tom Walker will see this as their chance to lift their work rate and finalise the top five this weekend. The Hawks, on the other hand, would have just been relieved to claim the points over Unley Mercedes Jets last round. But since then coach Gavin Chaplin would have been enforcing that his players, especially top performers Stephen Drainer, Bradly Hood and Brad Johansen, remained fully focused if they are to capture a top-five spot. Losing to a side in the relegation battle before the bye suggests the long reign of Goodwood Saints is coming to an end but they have one last opportunity to keep their slim top-five chances alive. However, it means beating new front runner Prince Alfred OC to do so.

To remain a top five aspirant Salisbury North must lay it all on the line against Adelaide University or its finals dream will be over. Photo: Jayson Vowles The Reds simply continue their rise towards a much valued premiership and with their goal in sight, it is hard to see Hayden Jolly, Tom Brinsley and Adam Perryman falter now. Port District’s recent success over the Saints could be the saviour of its year and a win over cellar dweller Henley on Saturday could ensure the Magpies stay in the top flight for another season.

Rostrevor OC can seal its position in the top five with a win over Unley Mercedes Jets on Saturday but after the Jets almost upset Salisbury North last round, ROC cannot afford to take them lightly.

Vili’s Division 2 Battle for spots continues

T

he top five is beginning to take shape with only fourth and fifth spots still to be decided.

The top three appears to be cemented in place but five sides remain in the fight for the final two spots. There are three matches of particular note then for this week with PHOS Camden and Old Ignatians looking to extend their ladder gaps on Saturday’s opponents Gaza and Scotch OC respectively, while Broadview has a tougher contest against St Peters OC. The Phantoms gained their one-game buffer through their victory over Broadview last week but will need a similar effort from Mark Ruwoldt, Adam Smyth and Ryan Reavley to see it grow further. Old Iggies had a relatively easy time of things last week, comfortably accounting for SMOSH

West Lakes by 92 points, but they will need to be mindful that Scotch OC snapped its recent decline with a vital 13-point triumph over Gaza last week. It would have renewed belief in Jonathon Lagonik, Will Thorpe and Tom Broderick among others and at home they could present rival ex-college club Old Ignatians with some problems. The Tigers meet St Peters OC at home to hold on to their finals hopes. SPOC was unable to keep its home qualifying final prospects going, losing to Sacred Heart OC by only two goals, but the double chance is practically assured. SHOC still has a slim opportunity to reel in Modbury’s ladder leading position but that can only be done if it defeats the Hawks away this week.

Plenty will rest with Mitchell Parr, Ben Moroney and Matthew Crettenden to upset the flag favourites. The Hawks had control of Portland last week, producing a relaxed 64-point victory, which seems a weekly outcome for it at the moment Chris Gein, Josh Moody and Darcy Davies played well for Portland. At the base of the ladder, SMOSH West Lakes and Portland face-off with the Thunder needing to find at least two more wins if a side above falters to keep their spot in Division 2 next year. Hot Rams on a roll K ilburn host Seaton Ramblers in a game vital to the Rams’ hopes of grabbing the double chance. Last week the Rams lost by seven points to Mitcham. Bradyn Wild, Jarrad Brusnahan and Darren Tremaine led the way. Kilburn battled hard but found Golden Grove too solid last week, down by 20 points with James Lamb, Andrew Graham (three goals) and Shane Souter among the best. The Rams by 72-86 points. Gepps Cross and Finders Park will have different agendas this Saturday – the Rams to try to stave off relegation, Flinders Park to sew up a double chance. Last week Gepps went down to Plympton by nine points with Mitchell Wooding, Daniel Mason and Mark Boothey leading the way. Flinders Park

proved too solid for Walkerville by 55 points as Michael Demant, Jay Collins and Thomas Dun stood tall. Parks by 44-62 points. Pembroke Old Scholars and Plympton also are targeting different outcomes from their game – the Kings for a double chance and Plympton to stay alive for the finals. The Kings lost to Athelstone by 24 points with Ben Hill-Long, Alex Holbrook and Ben Williams solid. Plympton held tough to beat Gepps Cross in a lowscoring game as Heath Deer, Adrian Tan and Giorgio Kastrappi played well. The Kings by 34-50 points. Mitcham and Athelstone will both see finals’ action with the Hawks still chasing a double chance. Last week they beat Seaton Ramblers by seven points with Brett Aitken (three goals),

Sam Clark and Daniel Loots among the best. Athelstone is on top of the ladder, last week beating the Kings by 24 points. Alexander Davies, Justin Sheedy and Chris Diotallevi played well. The Raggies by 16-34 points. Walkerville and Golden Grove will be playing for pride. Damien Hutchings, Kane Moore and Daniel Slorach were best for the Cats last week, while Judd Morris, Joshua Ingram and Todd Sheppard were solid in Grove’s win last week. Golden Grove by 12-28 points. Demons the talk of the Towns E astern Park puts out the welcome mat for Edwardstown this Saturday with many Towns players playing their first game on Dwight Reserve. The Demons have the double chance sewn up and look a big chance to hold top place with three rounds to play. Last week they crushed Hope Valley by 75 points with 44 scoring shots. Bradley Woodward (nine goals), Ricky Butler and Alex Winter led a long list of top players. Edwardstown had to work hard all day before holding out Kenilworth by 14 points, Sam Elliott, Daniel Page and Aaron Parsons among the best. The Demons look solid by 28-42 points. Hope Valley and Salisbury will have other incentives apart from winning the game, the Demons to stave off relegation, Salisbury to win to keep alive the double chance. Last week Matthew Ising, Zac White and Jamie Dowling led the way for Hope Valley in their loss against Eastern Park. Salisbury edged

out North Haven away by eight points as Matthew Goodes, Jarrod Gray and Matthew Fleming led the way. Salisbury gets the nod by 34-50 points.

Pooraka and North Haven approach this game from differing mindsets. Pooraka will be aiming to win to keep away from relegation, North Haven to keep its hopes alive for the double chance in the finals. Last week Pooraka had the bye and the week before that lost to Colonel Light Gardens by 19 points, Brett Kennedy, Chris Adams and Michael Baker leading the way. North Haven lost a lowscoring game to Salisbury as Adam Lawrence, Mark Cocchiaro and Jack Howden battled hard to lift their side. The visiting Haven looks the goods by 22-38 points. Kenilworth and Colonel Light Gardens looks an interesting clash at Saint Marys Park. The Kookaburras have just one win

on the board but their form in the second half of the season has improved. Last week they pushed Edwardstown to a 14-point decision with Peter Diamandopoulos, Zach Friend and Nicholas Chesser playing well. Colonel Light Gardens was no match for Westminster Old Scholars at home, losing by 61 points. Jakob Napier, Matt Arbon and Josh Bennett were among the best. A tough game to assess but the Lions may have the edge by 10-26 points. Westminster Old Scholars has the bye.

Door ajar for Rams or Dolphins

T

he door has opened for Glenunga or CBCOC to earn a finals berth this week when the two clash at Webb Oval.

The Dragons just failed to keep their own finals dream alive, losing a thriller to top side Lockleys by just four points.

The victor will take relinquished Rosewater’s position in the top five with a one-win advantage going into the last minor round.

Danny Forde, William Michalanney and Stewart Fincher from Hectorville were made to work for their win last week but proved they were up for any challenge.

The Rams recorded an important win over fourth-placed Smithfield last week which should have Luke Cooper, Luka Jackway and Guy Ward confident of achieving a remarkable reversal of fortune on Saturday. The Dolphins tested second-placed Hectorville’s resolve in a low-scoring affair last week but could not manage to curtail its opposition completely, going down by just 16 points. Glenunga held the upper hand in their round eight encounter but with a finals spot on the line this can be assured of being a tight hard contest. A crucial decider looms for top spot next week when Lockleys meets Hectorville but Blackfriars OS is still a possibility depending on the outcome of that clash along with its own results and percentage.

Valente, Bradley Hillman and Aron Fechner who were as ruthless as ever disposing of Pulteney by 115 points last week.

Hectorville will still be eying top spot but must get past Greenacres on Saturday to keep Lockleys within reach. Lottery for one place in the finals

T

rinity Old Scholars, Mawson Lakes, Fitzroy and Houghton Districts appear to be battling for one place (fifth) for this season’s major round with two rounds to play. While West Croydon, Woodville South, Ingle Farm and Brahma Lodge will play finals there is an amazing 11-points gap between the fourth and fifth sides. Brahma Lodge hosts Woodville South in a fourth versus top clash. Dylan Brooks was best in the Tigers’ win last week against Ingle Farm, while Jake McCulloch shone for the Cats in their big victory against Mitchell Park. The Cats look good by 26-42 points. Fitzroy is home to Mawson Lakes with victory keeping one side alive for the major round. Josh Page played well for the Lions in their loss to West Croydon last week, while Shane Budd was solid as the Saints lost narrowly to Houghton Districts. The home ground sways this to the Lions by 13-28 points. Mitchell Park and Adelaide Lutheran are ninth and bottom respectively but this match has plenty on the line with avoiding relegation a motivator. The Lions were best served by Brandon Walczak in their loss last week, while Shane Hickey led the way for Lutheran in its loss last week. Another top game but the Lions can

get up by 16-32 points. Ingle Farm and Houghton Districts will be aiming for the double chance and fifth place respectively. The Bulldogs lost to Brahma Lodge by 28 points last week as Jake Ferguson led the way. Houghton Districts showed plenty of grit to beat Mawson Lakes by four points as evergreen Dave Keetch stood tall again. The Bulldogs should have the answers by 28-44 points. Trinity Old Scholars faces a tough task to hold fifth place when it hosts top team West Croydon. The Lions were too strong for Adelaide Lutheran last week as Chad Spurr led from the front. West Croydon had no worries against Fitzroy to win by 73 points as Gary Sumpton enjoyed a top day out. The Hawks look to have the answers by 38-54 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

ALDI Division 7 A Uni finals clash already ith one more round remaining after this week’s matches, the Adelaide University and Flinders University clash has become a mini-elimination final for the last spot in the top four.

W

Prince Alfred OC should reclaim second spot on the ladder when it faces Central United on Saturday.

Both level on eight wins, the winner on Saturday will be virtually ensured of playing finals football.

The two stragglers meet on Saturday when Payneham Norwood Union record its first success of the season.

The Blacks effortless 110-point victory over Payneham Norwood Union saw them reclaim the coveted ladder position after the Crabs yielded to Prince Alfred OC, despite putting up a real fight for three quarters.

North Pines has struggled and the Falcons will see this as the time to swoop.

Flinders University will be benefited by the home ground advantage but will have to turn around a 105-point deficit from when these two sides last met in round eight. Tom Milton, Daniel Trezise and Braden Robinson from Adelaide University will still have to be at their best again to advance further.

The Tigers host Unley Mercedes Jets this week which shouldn’t trouble them too much.

OLYMPIC STAR WATCH

15 SPORTSBEAT // 28 JULY 2016

Still crowing for gold They went on to place 10th at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games but she changed partners for her 2012 achievements.

Brennan set herself the task of competing in two separate events in the 2012 Games, the first rower to take on multiple events, competing in the double sculls and the single sculls and became one of the stars of the Australian rowing team.

A stellar 2015 season has put the Victorian in a strong position heading into the Rio Games after she claimed her second single sculls World Championship title (her first being in 2014) and gold at two Rowing World Cups events.

Rowing with partner Brooke Pratley in the double sculls, Brennan won her first Olympic medal when the duo finished second and backed up the following day to win bronze in the single sculls.

She will again be a major player in the Women’s Single Sculls but she never makes any outlandish predictions despite being the gold medal favourite and undefeated since 2014.

A promising athlete in her early sporting days, Brennan won silver in the 400 metre hurdles at the 2001 World Youth Athletics Championships.

“I would love to win Olympic gold it would be incredibly special,” the 30 year-old has previously said. “But I just want to go as fast as I can. I can’t control how good anyone else is going to be.

A injury halted her athletic Olympic aspirations and she took up rowing in 2005 after being recognised though the University Games and the Victorian Institute of Sport. Brennan immediately showed great potential and won events on the international stage within two years, joining Sarah Cook in the women’s pair. They finished a fourth at the 2007 World Championships.

“I will do everything I can to really test my limits and see how well I can row by the Olympic final. An Olympic gold would be really special but I don’t think it would make my journey any less rewarding if that wasn’t the outcome.”

THREE POINT PLAYS

Her last win was in a World Cup race in May, more than two seconds clear of the rest of the field.

15. What was the previous nickname of the Matildas (before 1995)?

IT’s a joke WHY DID THE FOOTBALL coach flood the pitch? Because he wanted to bring on the sub! A FARMER COUNTED 196 cows in the field. But when he rounded them up, he had 200. I TOLD MY DOCTOR that I broke my arm in two places. He told me to stop going to those places.
