Misspent youth

W

hen both Nick Kygrios and Bernard Tomic finish their playing careers, hopefully they are not looking back on what could have been. With so much talent, the Australian pair is currently letting it go to waste. Whether its disinterest shown on Kyrgios’ part or the party life distracting Tomic, both need to realise where their attentions should be and focus on them. They have both been gifted a great tennis ability but it is not being put to full use at present. They are not acting like role models that we would like our kids to aspire. It is too easy to call them “spoilt brats” but we cannot also simply put it down to their youth. They are now coming of age that they need to show more in their chosen vocation and use the assets given. At some time, things have to snap and they realise the direction they wish to take. Both have the ability to succeed at the highest level and even win

a major or two as well as many subsidiary tournaments along the way. But their minds must be on the job. They could go a long way on following the path set by retiring champion Lleyton Hewitt whose never-give-in attitude has inspired many. It is hard to believe the criticism that Hewitt has had when you align his career, and even his early days, with that of both Kyrgios and Tomic. He certainly stood up again when called upon when playing for his country in the Davis Cup last weekend, along with Sam Groth, to lead Australia to the semi-finals against Great Britain in September. However, whether Kyrgios and Tomic do their part in taking us to the final is yet to be seen. Looking at the pair through their actions, it appears that a country’s expectations are weighing heavily on their young shoulders which they have not come to accept. It’s no doubt hard to do, but they really can’t worry about that and just need focus on their own

goals and strive to succeed on an individual level rather than a nation’s. Or are they just brats? One must also wonder if there is too much money in the game. For a player who has won just two tournaments to be able to splurge nearly $10,000 a night on a Miami penthouse you could probably argue that point. The partying is fine – but it comes with the paparazzi and then the police infractions that go with it are more concerning. They have both ‘lost’ the majority of the Australian public and need to take a good look at themselves and this nation’s proud tennis history. At least Tennis Australia has reached out to try to “clear the air” with Tomic. While Tomic has had several chances to atone, Kygrios is at the point where time away from the game may actually be best to freshen his mental resolve. The talent is there and most of us want both to succeed. Little is learnt from a misspent youth when it is your time to shine. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Build it and they will come!

Disappointment again for the Aussies this time at the British Open. After leading early Scott’s putter failed.

Adelaide Oval took centre stage last weekend, drawing huge crowds to sporting events with record numbers at Sunday’s Showdown (54,468) followed up with passionate supporters for the Liverpool clash on Monday night (53.008) Not bad going getting those numbers in consecutive days. Hopefully this will encourage more major sports to come to Adelaide.

Marc Leishman earned a place in a play-off for the Open on Monday but his chance to win was lost with a bogey on the first play-off hole, leaving American Zach Johnson to overcome South African van Oosthuzien over the remaining three holes. Fellow Australian Jason Day had a chance, along with American playing partner Jordan Spieth, to birdie the 18th to join the play-off but both missed.

Ryding the storm

P

ower big man Patrick Ryder is already anticipating the “booing”, but he will need to rise above that against his former side Essendon on Saturday night to steer Port Adelaide to a muchneeded victory. On six wins for the season so far, finals are slowly drifting away from the Power after high expectations at the start of the year. Only seven games remain and they will need to win at least six, if not all of them, to again play finals football, which makes this clash against the Bombers a ‘do-or-die’ battle. Ryder showed some of the reasons why he was brought to the club last week in the Showdown with his pack marking in front of goal and strong efforts in ruck, but his new side will really want him to show it this week. Surprisingly, Port Adelaide does not have a good record against the Bombers, losing its past five encounters. Despite Essendon’s ongoing woes with mental fatigue and added injuries, this game is not a fait accompli. The Power must work hard for success from the outset to keep any chance of a top-eight berth alive. The sting from losing a tight one last week should inspire them to lift further and ride through their current storm while also avoiding another Showdown hangover. Tom Jonas (quad) and Matt White (hamstring) are close to returning but will need to regain touch in the SANFL, while Jasper Pittard, who missed the Showdown with an ankle

Paddy Ryder will be looking for a big game for Port Adelaide against his old side Essendon on Saturday night. Photo: AAP

complaint, will be assessed but may need another week on the sidelines, leaving the same squad as last week to travel to Etihad Stadium on Saturday night. Sam Gray will probably make the trip as the emergency after a stand-out performance leading the Magpies to victory over top SANFL side the Eagles last week. Meanwhile, the Crows cannot afford a letdown either from the emotions of the past few weeks, with a finals’ appearance well within their grasp. Adelaide faces a Gary Ablett-led Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval on Saturday in what looms as a danger game. Although never having lost to the Suns, no one knows what to expect from them with Ablett at full tilt. This is a game the Crows should win at home, but have let slip in the past. They will need

Footy footnotes Well we got the Showdown asked for with flowing, entertaining footy, just the style Phil Walsh was trying to instil on the Crows. Not what we saw at the ‘G’ earlier on Sunday with many describing the Demons-Lions clash as the “worst game of football ever”. • Bulldogs skipper Bob Murphy summed the day up best though, tweeting “Football was beautiful today” in reference to the tributes to Walsh and Nick Riewoldt’s sister Maddie • Quinn Walsh probably earnt the medal named after her father herself showing great courage just by being there to present it – her dad would have been proud • Strange the AFL chose the red ball for the Showdown when usually the 2.50pm Sunday timeslot uses the yellow ball – it was hard to see when conditions got dark late in the game • Not many players achieve 93 percent efficiency these days, especially when picking up 27 or more possessions but it was almost the complete game from Kangaroo ruckman Todd Goldstein against Essendon last Friday night? – fantasy gamers would have done well with him as captain • Jonathan Giles must thinking he pulled the wrong rein choosing the Bombers over Adelaide during last year’s trade period – obviously way out of form not to be considered as even a back-up ruck option in the seniors of late, but Essendon’s VFL

3 SPORTSBEAT // 23 JULY 2015 to be mindful of that and come out with the same intensity shown last week to put their opponents on the back foot early. If they give Gold Coast a sniff then it is capable of taking it on its day. While this is the first time a home Adelaide crowd has gathered since the events of recent weeks, focus must now turn fully to football matters but their influence could still be a key factor on Saturday. Caretaker coach Scott Camporeale could reward all with another game after their efforts last Sunday. But there are a myriad of players putting their names in front of him through their performances in the SANFL last week, in particular Cameron Ellis-Yolmen, Sam Kerridge, Jarryd Lyons, Kyle Cheney and even Andy Otten. Matthew Wright and first-gamer Rory Atkins would be most vulnerable if changes occur. There could be some temptation to recall Rory Sloane this week as well. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN coach former Crow Hayden Skipworth said he produced his best performance of the year last week • Giles was even at the centre of a notnormally seen head count in the VFL last week when North Ballarat officials believed the big man was still on the ground as fellow ruckman Sam Tagliabue ran onto the field so called for a count which proved futile, costing them a 50m penalty and a resulting goal • With no wind, one would think there would no kicking worries so what were the Eagles’ and Magpies’ problems in combining for an 18.35 scoreline under the Etihad roof? • Wayne Carey has called Collingwood forward Jesse White “a tease” who needs to consult a psychologist • Is Richmond a real premiership threat if it can’t put a side like the Saints away? • Also showing great courage last weekend was young Hawk Alex Woodward who sadly suffered yet another knee injury in the VFL which will require a third reconstruction on the same knee, but he still managed to tweet, “The harder the struggle, the more glorious the triumph” – hopefully he can find some success soon • Kurt Tippett really doesn’t want to face the Crows – yet to play against his former side due to suspension and injury over the past two years, he now has a broken hand which will see him miss another clash next week – • Has the International Champions Cup been the Escort Cup of soccer or something?

AFL PREVIEW ROUND17

BY DION HAYMAN

CARLTON V HAWTHORN

RICHMOND V FREMANTLE

Carlton plays on a Thursday or Friday night for the seventh time this year when it tackles premier Hawthorn at Docklands. The Hawks are currently enjoying their record winning streak against Carlton with 11 straight wins since the Blues last beat them by a goal in 2005. The Hawks have won 16 of 18 matches against Carlton since 2001. The streak is nothing like Carlton’s best against Hawthorn. The Blues won their first 25 games against Hawthorn from 1925-38. Only once in Hawthorn’s current winning streak has Carlton lost by a single digit margin. That was a four-point defeat in 2009. Their only clash last year was at Docklands in round 13 and saw the Hawks win by 28 points, 18.10 (118) to 13.12 (90). Carlton trailed by just five points at the last change but the Hawks kicked away with Cyril Rioli and Jarryd Roughead both scoring three goals. Carlton won their first two clashes at Docklands but has lost the past seven.

Surprisingly, Essendon has won its last five games in a row against Port Adelaide. It comes after the Power won six straight games in this fixture from 2005-10. Their last clash was in round 16 last year at Adelaide Oval when the Bombers led by 24 points at half-time, 6.8 (44) to 2.8 (20). The margin was still 16 points at the final change, quickly cut to 10 when Jay Schulz goaled after 44 seconds of the final term. Travis Boak cut the deficit to two points on 14 minutes before Dyson Heppell’s response three minutes later. Kane Mitchell kicked the last goal of the game five minutes into time-on but there was to be no more score with the home side losing by two points, 8.14 (62) to 7.18 (60). It was Essendon’s lowest winning score and smallest winning margin against the Power. Overall, Port still leads the Bombers 14 wins to 11.

GWS came within an ace of claiming its first victory against Geelong when they last met in round 18 last year at the Sydney Showgrounds. The Cats extended a four-point half-time lead to 23 by the last change and appeared headed for a comfortable win. That margin was extended to 35 points when Steve Johnson and Tom Hawkins kicked the first two goals of the final term. But the Giants responded slamming on five of the next six goals. The margin was slashed to six points before Johnson kicked a behind with the last score of the match. It made it an uneasy three wins from three for the Cats over the Giants. Geelong won their first match in 2012 at Kardinia Park by 65 points with six goals from Harry Taylor and five from Johnson. The Cats won at the Showgrounds in 2013 by 59 points with five goals from James Podsiadly. They meet in the nation’s capital, Canberra, for this match.

Surprisingly, Essendon has won its past five games in a row against Port Adelaide. It comes after the Power won six straight games in this fixture from 2005-10. Their last clash was in round 16 last year at Adelaide Oval when the Bombers led by 24 points at half-time, 6.8 (44) to 2.8 (20). ADELAIDE V GOLD COAST

BRISBANE V NORTH MELBOURNE

Adelaide and Hawthorn have the best records against Gold Coast in the league with seven wins without defeat. The Crows’ seven straight wins against the Suns have come at an average of 54 points each with three wins by more than 10 goals. Their biggest win was 91 points at Football Park in 2012 and smallest by 28 points at Carrara in 2013. Their most recent win was by 41 points in round six at Carrara when they won 18.11 (119) to 11.12 (78). The Crows built a 46-point lead by three quarter-time before the Suns narrowly won the final term. Eddie Betts finished with five goals and Taylor Walker four while Charlie Dixon booted three for the Suns. Gary Ablett has averaged 34 possessions in his six games against the Crows, twice going past 40. The Crows’ lowest score against the Suns is 109 points, the Suns’ highest score against the Crows is 83.

North Melbourne has won five of its past seven games against Brisbane including an emphatic 82-point win when they last met in round two at Docklands. North led by 13 points at quarter-time before unleashing an eight-goal to one second term that took them to a 54-point lead at the main break. North went on to win 20.13 (133) to 7.9 (51) with seven goals from Jarrad Waite and three from Ben Brown. However, Brisbane won their previous clash in round 15 last year at the Gabba, stunning the Kangaroos with a four-point win. North led that one by 16 points at quartertime but the Lions swung the game with nine goals to three in the middle two quarters before holding on in the last, despite going goalless. In Brisbane’s favour – the Lions have won their past six home games against the Roos since North’s last win at the Gabba in 2005.

WESTERN BULLDOGS V COLLINGWOOD Sunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium

Collingwood’s six-game winning streak against the Western Bulldogs was shut down when they last met in round 13 last year at Docklands. It was tight all day with the lead changing five times and scores level on six occasions. The Dogs led at every change by six, one and six points before winning by eight, 16.10 (106) to 15.8 (98). Travis Cloke scored six goals in a losing side for the Pies while Liam Jones booted four for the Bulldogs. It ended the Magpies’ longest winning run against the Dogs since 1991-94. The Bulldogs haven’t won consecutive games against the Magpies since three straight wins from 2006-08. The sides have met 15 times at Docklands with the Magpies leading nine wins to six. The Bulldogs’ longest winning streak against Collingwood is six games from 1942-46. Five of those wins were by single digit margins.

MELBOURNE V ST KILDA Sunday 2.50pm, MCG

St Kilda has won an incredible 11 straight matches against Melbourne, easily eclipsing its previous best run of six wins from 1967-70 and 1971-75. The average margin in those 11 wins has been 31 points but Melbourne came closest to ending the streak when they last met just six rounds ago at Docklands. The Saints led by one and six points at the first two breaks before the Demons went into the last change on level terms. The last quarter was looking goalless until Jeremy Howe put the Dees in front on 25 minutes. Their lead barely lasted a minute though, Leigh Montagna kicking the winner soon after as the Saints won by two points, 12.13 (85) to 12.11 (83). The Saints have won their past five against Melbourne at the MCG since the Demons’ last win there in the 2006 second elimination final.

Potential preliminary finalists Sydney and West Coast meet at Subiaco for the fifth straight occasion and could be set to resume their intense rivalry from the last decade which saw them become the first teams in history to play three consecutive matches decided by one point. Sydney has won its past five against the Eagles at Subiaco and its past eight against West Coast at all venues. It amounts to the Swans’ longest winning streak against the Eagles who haven’t beaten the Swans since a 2007 home win by 12 points. They last met in round 15 last year in the West when Sydney won by 28 points, 10.19 (79) to 7.9 (51). It was tight most of the afternoon but the Swans kicked away with 3.5 to 1.2 in the final term with three goals from Adam Goodes. Josh Kennedy has only 13 goals in six games against Sydney. The Eagles still lead 12 wins to nine at Subiaco, but Sydney leads 26 wins to 19 from all 45 matches.

WEST ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE RESERVES

GLENELG V WOODVILLE/WEST TORRENS

Many of the Bloods’ younger players are giving fans cause for excitement, especially after taking only their second batch of points from Elizabeth in their past 18 matches at the venue. Given the likes of Aaron Francis should be drafted this year. Adelaide is benefiting from a higher than usual number of AFL-listed players at the moment as its size and ball movement proved too much for a young Rooster outfit. West would be keeping a close eye on Norwood in the coming weeks, knowing that the Redlegs sit one game clear of West but with inferior percentage. It also needs to be wary of a surging Port, which is one game behind the Bloods. A match like this could present dangers for a complacent opponent. Much of this will depend on selection, as if Adelaide retains Nathan Van Berlo, Cameron Ellis-Yolmen and Jarryd Lyons, it could stretch the West midfield. The Bloods have been more consistent across all lines this year and while this will be a stiff test for them, they should take the points.

After a first half of the season to forget, Glenelg would almost have rued the bye last week as it slowed the flow gained from successive wins over Norwood and Sturt, before a gallant loss to West. It was some lack of poise under pressure that allowed the Bloods back into a contest that Glenelg had been so solid for much of the game, but coach Matthew Lokan would have to be happy with the application his players are showing lately. The Eagles looked flat last week against the Magpies and paid the price. Coach Michael Godden would be concerned that only three teammates stepped up to share the goal duties with Michael Wundke in the loss. Ladder positions suggest a big win for the Eagles. A Glenelg outfit with nothing to lose and a chance to avoid the wooden spoon, playing at home, with a number of exuberant youngsters is a combination that could be tricky for the Eagles. If the Eagles can get their attack to gel better this week, it could be a torrid afternoon for the Glenelg defence.

SOUTH ADELAIDE V NORWOOD

STURT V PORT MAGPIES

Two teams looking a little nervously over their shoulders in the closing weeks of the season, aware they can hold their destiny in their own hands. Norwood is second but needs to build percentage, which is inferior to all other teams in the top five. South is two games clear in fifth spot and would love a top-three scalp to cement its second successive finals appearance. Norwood has held sway at Noarlunga in these match-ups over the years. The confidence gained from last fortnight’s win over the Magpies will help the psyche of a playing group that had looked jaded before then. The younger players coming through, such as Patrick Levicki and Harry Cross, have stepped straight into senior company quickly and given an extra dimension for coach Ben Warren seeking to freshen a premiership-dominated squad mentally. South has shown ability to break the lines with precision disposal and winning contested football, moving it quickly into an attack that has a number of players capable of multiple goals. In an entertaining contest, Norwood should win.

A season that promised so much for Sturt continues to fade, set to miss the finals in a disappointing year at Unley. Injuries to key personnel have hurt, but so has an over-reliance on a small number of prime movers. The Magpies are starting to time their run to perfection. Their dismissal of the top-placed Eagles last week should have sent some warnings around the competition that they are not to be taken lightly in premiership calculations. With the AFL arm now out of finals contention, it will be interesting to see which way selectors sway over the closing weeks at Alberton. They may look at some of the younger players, which would affect the Magpies set-up or run with experience and keep some stability at the Magpies. Whichever, Sturt needs to focus on finishing the season strongly and try to salvage something from a year where they looked set to face September action again. The Blues may also look at their youngsters and give them a taste of league action with a view to 2016.

While getting beaten by more than 100 points last week, North Adelaide was unlucky to run into the strongest Adelaide Reserves team ever fielded at SANFL level. The Roosters’ first half was solid and a number of the youngsters took their chances to shine, but class and fitness prevailed over a team missing an extraordinary number of first choice players. Central did well to stick with West for the most of the game, but could not nail their opportunities when it counted. It will be a tough task to make a late charge for finals. Central could look towards this as a percentage booster to keep any slim finals hope alive. While so many injuries are stymying North’s options, the opportunity thrown to a number of younger players will be invaluable as the club rebuilds its list. There is a degree of rebuild for the Bulldogs as well, but it is safe to say they are further advanced than at Prospect. It also looks safe to put the kiss of death on them here too.

Bayliss wants two-prong spin attack

E

ngland coach Trevor Bayliss has put his pacemen on notice, declaring his intent to play two spinners at some point in the Ashes.

His seven dismissals were a record for a wicketkeeper on Ashes debut and also the second most by an Australian on debut.

Bayliss will meet with national selectors on Tuesday, settling on a squad for the third Test that starts on 29 July at Edgbaston.

The 29 year-old fell one short of equalling the most-ever dismissals by a wicketkeeper on debut, jointly held by Australia’s Brian Taber and England’s Chris Read.

Tweakers Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid were included in 13-man squads for the first and second Tests.

Lehmann flagged the possibility of the veteran gloveman being available for Australia’s tour match against Derbyshire which started on Thursday – before stressing the decision was entirely dependent on Haddin being ready.

Ali was preferred at Cardiff, while Rashid was close to playing at Lord’s – only for a finger injury to rule him out. Bayliss confirmed leg spinner Rashid is in the mix to make his Test debut next week. “Not trying to pre-empt anything before the selection meeting, but I would think we’d probably take two spinners,” Bayliss said. “I would like to play two spinners somewhere in this tour and currently he’s thought of as one of the top two spinners in the country.” England’s bowling was substandard at Lord’s, where Australia strolled to a 405-run win, but its top order is a much bigger concern.

However, he admitted Nevill had made the decision difficult following his Lord’s efforts. Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill had an impressive debut with the gloves for Australia, but could step aside for Brad Haddin in the Third Test. Photo: AAP be a surprise to any player in the team that when you play badly, positions are going to be looked at and discussed,” Bayliss said.

“I’m sure all of the players know. It wouldn’t

Meanwhile, Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill faces the prospect of being left out of the Test team despite a record-breaking Ashes debut, with coach Darren Lehmann hopeful Brad Haddin is ready to return to the team.

Cheika said 32 year-old Giteau’s leadership would be missed but the 93-cap veteran would be right for the two Bledisloe Cup clashes with the All Blacks that follow the Argentina Test.

he intriguing battle for Wallabies inside backs spots has taken another twist after Matt Giteau was ruled out of Saturday’s Test against Argentina.

“It’s going to be a big year for Gits and to send him over to Mendoza after a very physical test as well as a tight turnaround, just isn’t fair on him or the group,” Cheika said.

It has slumped to 3-52 or worse in eight of its past 13 innings, with Adam Lyth, Gary Ballance and Ian Bell most under pressure.

T

Giteau was cleared of any serious damage after scans on his nose and chest after he copped a battering during his first Test appearance in four years in Saturday’s 24-20 comeback win over South Africa. But coach Michael Cheika ruled the inside centre out of the Test against the Pumas in Mendoza as a precautionary move because of his sternum soreness, with Christian Leali’ifano called into the travelling squad as a replacement.

Nevill had one of the more memorable Test debuts – taking seven catches in the crushing 405-run series-levelling win while also batting with purpose.

Giteau’s absence makes it almost certain Matt Toomua will get a starting role after impressing greatly off the bench with a key role in the Wallabies’ comeback in Brisbane. Toomua has played most of his Test rugby at inside centre and could be a straight replacement for Giteau but Cheika could also recall Kurtley Beale there. His options at five eighth include incumbent Quade Cooper, who had a mixed game,

Chris Rogers has been cleared of serious damage and could yet feature in the third Ashes Test, after his woes were considered to be related to an ear problem. Rogers retired hurt on day four of the second Test due to a concerning sudden bout of dizziness. The fear was that he may be suffering from delayed onset of concussion, having been struck on the helmet on day two. BY ROB FORSAITH AND JOE BARTON, AAP

Toomua and Bernard Foley, who occupied the spot for most of last season. Whatever permutation Cheika settles on, halfback Nick Phipps appears certain to start after also adding spark off the bench when Will Genia copped a knee injury which has ruled him out. Phipps was confident the intensive training camp the Wallabies went through would stand them in good stead. “I think as Cheik has said, he wants everyone to be able to drop in at a moment’s notice, so we’re pretty lucky we’ve been training that way,” said Phipps. “It will be interesting to see who the 10-12 is leading down the track and then we can just build from there straight away.” BY ADRIAN WARREN, AAP

ROCky road continues

Henley continues to get its job done without much fanfare but it is looming as a major title fancy. The Sharks not only had a go at Mick Fanning during the week, but took a chunk out of the Blacks’ hopes. Brad Geddes, Ryan Sampson and Corey Gray will try to consolidate their position in the top three against Payneham Norwood Union while keeping tabs on top spot as well. The Falcons, though, have their sights set on the double chance as well so this should be a thrilling contest at Payneham Oval. They were at their ruthless best last week, accounting for Portland with ease, but Henley will certainly offer more obstacles for Nick Jolly, Cameron Milne and Adam Rowett on Saturday. The Thunder could be in for more punishment at Pertaringa Oval this week when meeting ladder leader Tea Tree Gully.

I

t’s been an up and down season for Rostrevor OC, unable to find the consistent needed to be a genuine contender.

However, ROCs will be buoyed by their muchimproved performance to beat Goodwood Saints at home last week. Tim Baccanello carried on his form from the achievements of the State team he represented the previous weekend and Daniel Bell and Jack Nelligan were among the action as usual. It gave them back a position in the top five, but the next few weeks will be telling on their desires of remaining there. Rostrevor OC now faces Port District, with finals aspirations of its own.

The Gullies showed their own brutality last week giving scant regard for Sacred Heart OC in a thorough 101-point belting.

The Magpies kept their finals’ prospects alive by beating Salisbury North last week and Damian Coulthard, James Batty and Ryan Chester can cause further havoc with a home victory this week.

Portland can ill afford to let Josh Hand, Nathan Rudloff and Ryan Spittle play a lone hand again. SHOC is at Goodwood this week.

The Hawks will need win themselves on Saturday to make next week’s clash another early elimination final.

Finals fate to be decided

B

roadview and Scotch OC could determine their finals fate when they clash at Scotch College on Saturday.

Both are still outside the top five but the consequences for the loser could be damaging in the scheme of things, especially with just four minor round games to go after this week. Tigers duo Ben Bamford and Lachlan Smith can’t afford any slip ups from here. Much will also depend on the outcome of fifthplaced St Peters OC’s clash with fourth-placed rival Prince Alfred OC this week. The Reds continue to pursue a top-three finish but SPOC cannot make it harder for its finals challengers by winning at home.

Prince Alfred OC proved it was worthy of the double chance, beating third-placed Gaza last week to ensure the door remained ajar.

Matt Fogden, Jay Shaw and alike have responded to every task thrown at them and will be ready for what this week beholds.

However, it would have all been wasted if key players from last week Will Dalwood and Cameron Graetz cannot get enough support this week.

Gepps Cross’ best opportunity to achieve some success this season comes against fellow straggler Walkerville.

After a team-built 55-point victory over SMOSH West Lakes, Joe Overland and Luke Trenorden must inspire again to hold out Broadview from fifth spot. It’s a huge day for SPOC when it also honours club legend Grant Lyon with his ‘Country Day’. Gaza can practically secure its top-three spot with a win over second-placed Modbury on Saturday. The Eagles treasure their home soil and are always hard to beat at Klemzig Oval but the Hawks are flying well at present so travelling shouldn’t worry them.

It’s been tough for both sides this year so any celebratory drinks would be welcome. Ladder leader Unley Mercedes Jets should have no problems with SMOSH West Lakes. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Kings aim to rule over Reds

F

linders Park and Pembroke Old Scholars are set for one of their most important games of the season at Flinders Park this week.

For the seventh-placed Parks a loss would likely shut the door on any finals’ hopes while for the Kings there is still a chance to keep alive for the double chance, their place in the five almost certain. Flinders Park battled hard in its loss to Plympton last week with Justin Keatley, Brett O’Hara and Matthew Green among the best. Pembroke OS pushed top side PHOS Camden at stages last week before losing by 21 points. Jaiden Pengelly, Nicholas McCann and Scott Wightman led the way with Henry Nicholson kicking four goals. The Kings should be too strong by 37-50 points. Athelstone and PHOS Camden should be a beauty at Max Amber Sportsfield in a second

versus top match up. Last week the Raggies led until late in the game to lose to Old Ignatians by eight points with Matthew Leigh kicking five goals. The Phantoms controlled their game against Pembroke OS for most of the day before winning by 21 points, Ryan Reavley and Orry Cross were among the key players for PHOS. Tough to call but the Phantoms can just get home by 12-22 points. Plympton and Seaton Ramblers will have different incentives at Plympton Oval, the Bulldogs to stave off relegation and the Rams to win their first game. Matthew Downey, Giorgio Kastrappi (five goals) and Max Scott were best for the Bulldogs in their win last week, while the Rams could not convert in front of goal in their loss to Old Ignatians, 12.8 (80) to 6.16 (52). Jarrad Brusnahan led the way. The Bulldogs can

win again by 28-40 points. Mitcham and Golden Grove should provide a tight match at Price Memorial Oval. The Hawks are second bottom but have played well recently before last week’s bye. Golden Grove nearly booked its place for the finals with a stirring eight-point win at home against Athelstone with Josh Ingram, Todd Sheppard and Dashiell Ravlich among the best players. Wouldn’t be surprised which way this went but the visitors look good again by 12-26 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Chics keen to tame hot Dragons

K

ilburn and Westminster Old Scholars could be eyeing off an early finals’ clash in the fourth versus fifth encounter at Blair Athol Reserve. But the Chics have a three-game buffer over the Dragons and are aiming for a top-three berth. Last week the Chics went down to North Haven by 10 points after trailing at each change. Vince Urbancic, James O’Loughlin and Scott Galbraith led the way for the Chics. Westminster Old Scholars was too strong for Hope Valley away, getting in by 36 points. Thomas Easton, Matthew Newman (five goals) and Matthew Reid stood tall for the Dragons. The Chics can take this one by 23-38 points. North Haven and Glenunga in a top versus bottom clash normally would not excite the neutral fans. But The Magpies have won just one out of their past four games, last week edging out Kilburn by 10 points with Ross Merrett best. The Rams produced a stunning effort to beat Pooraka by 60 points last week, Brant Ellis leading the way with seven goals. The Magpies can win again, but not by a cricket score, 38-54 points. Pooraka and Eastern Park meet at Lindblom Park with the Bulls desperate to stay close to the five and Demons in touch with the top

three. Dean Pead was best for the Bulls in their big loss last week to WOS, while Eastern Park was excellent in the second half to beat Salisbury by 15 points at home last week, Ben McMullen showing his leadership. The Demons look to have the answers here by 26-40 points. Kenilworth and Hope Valley are in similar positions in eighth and seventh places respectively on the ladder with a win to either handy to keep pace near the top five – a loss sending them back to relegation territory. Kenilworth had a big fright before beating Hectorville by a point after leading by 33 points into the last quarter with Luke Gane a shining light. Hope Valley trailed all day against WOS to lose by 36 points, Michel Stevens playing well. The Kookaburras by 14-27 points. Salisbury versus Hectorville looks a tough day at the office for the Heccy hounds. Salisbury, second, lost to Eastern Park by 15 points last week with Brad Horjus best. Hectorville charged home to fall by a point to Kenilworth with Luke Broadbent among the best with five goals. The Magpies will be on the hunt here by 62-74 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Jostling for position starts

I

t has come to the point of the season when sides look to cement their positions within the top five and results from last week showed the competition remains fierce in Division 5. Rosewater took a slight advantage over CBCOC in the battle for the double chance, claiming the points in their encounter last week by just three points. The Dolphins failed to stamp home any authority in their match against the Bulldogs with wayward kicking preventing them from putting themselves right in the top-three mix. With four rounds remaining and two wins behind Para Hills and Colonel Light Gardens, it will tough to reel in the difference now.

top side Blackfriars OS to keep challenging. Jake Williams and Jarrad Schar will need to inspire a focused team performance from their Bulldog teammates on Saturday. Colonel Light Gardens has been a bit shaky in recent weeks, only just holding off Pulteney last week by 10 points but snuffed out the Navy Blues’ finals aspirations in the process. The Lions are yet to seal their spot in the top three and this week’s opponent Greenacres, despite also being out of finals contention after a disappointing loss last week, is still capable of shaping the final make-up of the top five.

They face a college rivalry clash this week to keep any chances alive.

Much will rest on Arren Harvey and Josh Bennett to do the heavy lifting again but would also welcome greater assistance around them.

Rosewater though, albeit slim as well, is closer to the Big Reds and Lions but must overcome

Para Hills is proving to be a side to watch over the closing stages of the season,

easily accounting for the Dragons last by a whopping 124 points. The Big Reds, with the likes of Shane Hanson and Brayden Bennett in impressive form, could be the biggest threat to Blackfriars OS. They head to the South Parklands on Saturday to put in a similar showing against Adelaide Lutheran. Elizabeth beat these Bulldogs last week to remain fighting for a finals spot, which should continue for Peter Akech and Michael Taylor with bottom side Woodville South coming their way this week. Demons ready to tame Lions

itzroy has the home ground but will need more than that to beat top side Lockleys this week. The Lions are hanging on to fifth place with six wins, last week beating Brahma Lodge away by 31 points. John Harding was best. Lockleys is winning with big scores and margins, last week crushing Central United by 105 points. Slaven Pavic led a long group of top players for the Demons. This could be a big day out for the top side by 58-70 points. Mawson Lakes and Ingle Farm should be close as their current ladder positions indicate, the Saints in eighth place and the Bulldogs in sixth. Mawson Lakes lost to West Croydon last week by 67 points with Matthew Gladman leading the better players. Ingle Farm had the bye but has had some good results in its five wins so far. The Bulldogs look the goods here by 24-40 points. Smithfield and Central United looks a mismatch at Smithfield in the second versus bottom encounter. The Panthers beat Trinity Old

DIVISION 1 LADDER Scholars by 43 points last week with Jamie Lane playing a top game to be best. Central United found the might of Lockleys too much, falling by 105 points. James Bain was best for Central with three goals. Likely to be a three-figure result here, Smithfield by 90-108 points. Trinity Old Scholars and West Croydon, in third and fourth places respectively, could provide an early finals’ preview when they meet at Trinity College. Trinity’s best player in its 43-point loss to Smithfield last week was Sam Peters. West Croydon was too strong for Mawson Lakes, home by 67 points at Fawk Reserve. Blacks can darken challenger’s hopes

delaide University will be out to fend off another challenger to its double chance position this week when Mitchell Park comes to University Oval.

The Blacks separated themselves from their close ties with St Pauls OS last week, to gain a gap from the third-placed outfit, following a tightly fought contest against the Saints. With scores level at three quarter-time, Adelaide University held St Pauls OS to one goal while kicking 3.3 itself to win by 15 points.

to Raiders’ coach Steve Gilling. They visit Salisbury Downs Oval this week to face the Tigers who need to produce some big efforts to make the finals from here. Salisbury West would have grown in confidence after a strong 58-point victory over Flinders University last week and there would be no bigger result than upsetting the ladder leader. Andrew Curyer, Joe Timpano and Adam Jones will be the keys again if this is to be achieved.

Andrew Riley, Toby Nihill and Caleb Desmet will need to be ready just as tighter clash on Saturday against the Lions who pushed top side Houghton Districts last week before succumbing to a similar final quarter performance from the Raiders.

Angle Vale is in the same boat as the Tigers, needing a late charge to push for a finals berth.

More options presenting up forward would help Mitchell Park’s finals prospects.

Houghton District could begin juggling things around in preparation for the finals but it will still be a tough opponent to get passed. Justin Kuhar and Ben Birtles were new names on the Raiders’ best player list last week showing the handy spread of talent available

ernando Alonso is confident McLaren will become a much better prospect over the remainder of this year’s Formula One campaign, despite the team’s recent woes. Alonso described McLaren’s situation, in particular the struggles with their new Honda power unit, as a “little bit sad” at Silverstone, where he went on to score his first point of the year.

Mercedes have clearly set the pace this season, with Lewis Hamilton leading teammate Nico Rosberg by 17 points, but well ahead of the rest. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel is third on championship standings 59 points away from Hamilton. Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo has fond memories of the 2014 Hungarian GP after winning there last year.
