While the lights have not totally gone out at Alberton, it is very close to blowing a fuse. Over the course of the first half of the season most of the blame must fall on the players not bringing the effort required to be a top-eight contender. This is definitely hard to fathom considering the high expectations at the club over the preseason that its surge towards another premiership was on.

IT’S A JOKE & QUIZ 15

However, they have failed to show what is required to achieve this in many of their matches over the first 13 weeks of the season.

There had been some anticipation that Port Adelaide’s season was on the turnaround after its dominant performance over a languishing Collingwood followed up by a strong-willed showing against a true contender in the Western Bulldogs.

However, all that desire and belief fell away last week at Domain Stadium against a fledgling Fremantle which had only just previously beaten 16th and 15th ranked sides in Essendon and Brisbane respectively.

While mathematically the Power’s prospects of making the finals are possible, the two-win eightpoint deficit will be difficult to overcome over the remaining nine weeks as it depends on other sides losing. So where has it gone wrong? Injuries have been a factor for coach Ken Hinkley, in particular to key defenders and ruckmen.

BEATBOX Injuries and the after-effects of the Essendon saga have probably been his saviour. However, what then does he need to do to turn the club’s fortunes around next year? Big man Paddy Ryder will be back to bolster the rucking stocks while the possible return of Angus Monfries could free up the likes of Chad Wingard and Aaron Young for more midfield roles.

A lack of on-field leadership has been a major issue in these matches.

While the club has been active in recent trade periods in luring key forward Charlie Dixon and Ryder to the club, the real ingredients to success are still needed.

It is a crucial feature needed by such a young side which the Power has become due to the injuries.

The Power is certainly missing a key tall defender, added to the loss of Jonas and Jack Hombsch which have proven costly.

However, ill discipline at telling moments has also resulted from this leadership demise, even from the leaders themselves – Tom Jonas’ six-match suspension a case in point.

Hinkley must also look at another back-up in the ruck, especially now that youngster Dougal Howard will be unavailable for at least half of next year.

These are areas, though, that can be improved on over the rest of the season of which Hinkley must decide its direction - a continued finals push or development of younger players for 2017. It’s a tough decision for a man who could find himself on the chopping block if improvements are not seen. Hinkley’s tenure is okay for next year but another season of much the same and the rumbles will get louder.

THUMBS UP

Matthew Dellavedova became only the sixth Australian to receive an NBA championship ring when the Cleveland Cavaliers completed the greatest comeback in NBA finals history to capture their first ever title.

The midfield remains their strongest component. So once the elements around it come together, Port will be ready to make its charge for its next premiership. For now, though, it has been another season of despair for Power fans who simply expect success so it is up to the players to have the same belief within. Otherwise, the broom will possibly come out for them and Hinkley. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

They may have received the nod last week but the Wallabies have earned it for a second week in a row following the indignity of losing their first ever series to England on home soil.

The Cavaliers won the best-of-seven play-offs 4-3 after being down 1-3 in the series to Stephen Curry’s and fellow Aussie Andrew Bogut’s Golden State Warriors – the first time a side had reeled in such a deficit as well.

Coach Michael Cheika must re-focus his players on finishing the three Test series on a high in Sydney on Saturday night to prevent an English whitewash and to prepare for the Bledisloe Cup campaign against arch rival New Zealand in August.

It was Cleveland’s first NBA crown in its 46-season history and was the city’s first major sports championship success since the Browns won the NFL Super Bowl in 1964, which was the longest title drought for any American city.

Maybe we could get Eddie Jones back to coach us again and bring the Wallabies to Adelaide Oval too as our playing surface is far better than what Melbourne’s AAMI Park dished up last week.

AFL NEWS

Crows in for a slog P repare for a wet and woolly slog!

That’s what Adelaide coaches and players would have been doing this week and what fans can expect for Thursday night’s blockbuster clash with North Melbourne on Adelaide Oval. Weather forecasts don’t look favourable with even thunderstorms and possible hail on the horizon which will ensure that it won’t be a fluent skilful contest. This may unfortunately for local fans favour the tough Kangaroos outfit. However, if Adelaide can regenerate its fierce attack on both body and ball as seen in its last quarter efforts in beating West Coast in Perth two weeks ago then its opposition will be in for another rough trip across the border. The Crows will not only need to be ready for the conditions but also an opponent that matched reigning premier Hawthorn in the physical stakes last week. One would anticipate that North Melbourne will attempt to start this week’s encounter with the same ferocity to unsettle the locals. There are huge consequences on this clash as well with both sides pursuing a top-four finish to enhance their premiership possibilities. A telling factor will be whether the Crows can re-ignite the passion of their prebreak performances and re-establish their momentum, especially from their Perth success. Their fierce attack around the ball in the last quarter was the best they had been defensively this season and in the likely scrappy conditions, high pressure and strong tackling will again be essential. Adelaide can take control from the outset if North Melbourne is slightly down on its intensity level. But should the visitors be just as ferocious from the opening again then it is imperative the Crows stay with their opponents for the duration as they may gain an ascendancy late with their opponents coming off consecutive six-day breaks.

It will not be Adelaide’s usual high scoring affair but it will still be a game well suited to its dynamic forward structure, more importantly its smaller brigade in Eddie Betts and Charlie Cameron while the likes of Richard Douglas, Jarryd Lyons and Rory Atkins will have to impact the scoreboard as well. Both coaches will have faced different scenarios at the selection table this week. Crows mentor Don Pyke would have mulled

over hard-at-it onballer Brad Crouch’s value to the line-up which would have raised the question about who to drop with practically a full list on the park. Forward Mitch McGovern could be unlucky with the conditions in mind and knowing what Crouch can offer at ground level. Kangaroo coach Brad Scott, on the other hand, has some worries with fitness concerns surrounding his group. Captain Andrew Swallow (concussion), midfielder Ben Cunnington (corked thigh)

Footy footnotes The AFL bye rounds have usually been such a quiet period for the media, not the case from last weekend. • Racism erupts surrounding Swan Adam Goodes, Eddie McGuire puts his foot in it; violence against women is a major problem at this time, Eddie puts his foot in it; and it hasn’t just these issues either, Eddie has a habit of putting his foot in it – maybe it’s time to go, Eddie – AFL boss Gillon McLachlan’s rebuke was a bit flippant too • Holden is reviewing its major sponsorship of Collingwood citing it disapproved of McGuire’s inappropriate comments as it prided itself on “diversity, inclusion and social responsibility” – can the club afford to keep Eddie as top honcho if sponsors drop off? • North Melbourne was fined $50,000 and coach Brad Scott was fined $30,000 for accusing umpires of bias in his post-match press conference • Former Hawthorn great Gary Buckenara was asked to rate the clubs currently outside the eight on their future premiership prospects for his ESPN segment and he responded saying he believed Melbourne was the closest to a flag due to its “talented and well-balanced list and off-field stability” – he declared he had “expected more” from the Power over past seasons but indicated they should still “be around the mark of the top eight” next year and “they’re young enough to keep progressing” • Cleveland Cavaliers success in the NBA after breaking a 52-year title drought would give some long suffering AFL fans some hope – the Bulldogs have been waiting even longer (62 years) than their NBA counterparts, Melbourne (52 years) and St Kilda (50)

3 SPORTSBEAT // 23 JUNE 2016 and forward Jarrad Waite (hip) all missed last Friday night’s loss to the Hawks and their availability in the shorter turnaround will need to be assessed. Then there were added injuries to young defender Luke McDonald (hamstring) who will be missing for an extended period and flashy in-form onballer Daniel Wells (ankle) who may struggle to recuperate in time, particularly considering past foot issues. Tough calls will have to be made by both coaching staffs before this important encounter even heats up but whatever weather is experienced, it should be one of the most hotly fought contests of the season. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN • Autocorrect embarrasses Fox Footy’s website mid-season review of Essendon last week as they blame the spellchecking software for altering former Geelong premiership hero and now Bombers top-up player James Kelly to James Jelly – Essendon liked it so added a jelly head to Kelly online profile • We have now found out that the Western Bulldogs banner writer is rising comedian Danny McGinlay, a Dogs fan since childhood, who got the job after complaining about a Bulldogs’ banner in 2014 which boringly read “We are here to do our best so victory will be ours” – he rates one of his best as “At the end of the match we’ll still be cheering, you’ll still be worried about your negative gearing!” but some he hasn’t been allowed to use include “Anybody ring their brother this week?” when they last played the Crows, “St Kilda — the patron saint of wooden spoons” and even “Slater and Gordon — keeping Collingwood fans out of prison since 1935” when the legal firm was once a sponsor on their banner • Meanwhile, Port Adelaide’s banner at the Bulldogs game at home a few weeks ago, “Port may give you gout but it’s great with cheese. Bulldogs give you nothing but fleas!”, was actually a retort to a Bulldog banner from last year that read “A Bulldog’s love, never in doubt, port tastes yuck and gives you gout” • Bulldogs favoured son Chris Grant is returning to the club as its new Director of Football • Thursday night footy may be a great promotion of the game but in the middle of winter on school nights and when senior school kids have exams – none in Melbourne interestingly either – either put them during school holidays or in April or August, otherwise not at all

AFL PREVIEW ROUND14

BY DION HAYMAN

ADELAIDE V NORTH MELBOURNE Thursday 7.20pm, Adelaide Oval

North Melbourne opens the round with another night blockbuster – it’s fourth in five weeks – but this time it’s on a Thursday night and this time, it’s in Adelaide. These two teams met in the opening round and the Crows led by as much as 24 points after Taylor Walker kicked the opening goal of the third term. However, Brent Harvey booted three goals in seven minutes, late in the term as the momentum swung back North’s way. The Roos added another three goals to one in the final term to win by 10 points, 16.11 (107) to 14.13 (97). Josh Jenkins finished with a game-high five goals. North Melbourne has only ever played twice before on Adelaide Oval – both against the Crows – and been beaten both times. In 2014, the Crows won by six goals with four goals from Sam Kerridge, while Lindsay Thomas scored four of North’s 10. Then last year in the opening round, Walker scored 6.5 and Eddie Betts four as the Crows opened up a 63-point lead by half-time and went on to win by 77 points, 21.14 (140) to 9.9 (63). North hasn’t beaten the Crows in Adelaide since a 2003 win at Football Park by 10 points. Head to head, the Crows lead 20 wins to 19.

RICHMOND V BRISBANE Saturday 1.10pm, MCG

Richmond has won its last eight games against Brisbane and indeed won 12 and drawn one of its last 14 clashes since 2004. The Lions’ only success since their last grand final appearance was in 2009 at the MCG when Jonathon Brown took 11 marks and kicked four goals to steer Brisbane to a 26-point win. The sides also drew at Docklands in 2007. Since 2010, the closest Brisbane has come to upsetting the Tigers was a 19-point defeat in that very season. Its most recent defeat was its biggest of the eight, losing by 79 points at the Gabba in round three last year. Richmond led by 41 points at three quarter-time and booted eight goals to two in the final term to win 21.11 (137) to 8.10 (58). The Lions haven’t kicked 100 points against the Tigers since 2008. They have averaged just 58 points in their last three games. Richmond now leads Brisbane 25 wins to 16 with one draw. At the MCG, the Tigers lead 12 wins to three. Richmond has even won 11 of its last 12 quarters against Brisbane.

GWS GIANTS V CARLTON

Saturday 4.05pm, Spotless Stadium

Fremantle has won its last three games in a row against Collingwood, a feat it also achieved between 2005-06. They have never won four in a row against the Pies though. Collingwood last beat Fremantle in 2012 at the MCG when it won by 29 points, 15.17 (107) to 12.6 (78). That was despite a game-high five goals from Matthew Pavlich. This will be their first meeting at the MCG since then. They’ve met eight times at the ground with Fremantle’s only two wins coming in 2005 and 2006. The sides last met in Perth in 2015 when it was first versus fourth. The Dockers won by seven points, 12.8 (80) to 11.7 (73). Scores were level at three quarter-time and Paul Seedsman’s goal midway through the final term lifted Collingwood to a five-point lead. However, Michael Barlow and Michael Walters kicked the last two goals of the game to take Fremantle to 11-1 and leaving Collingwood at 8-4. It was the first of six straight losses for the Pies which ended their finals bid.

Carlton has won 16 premierships, GWS of course none as yet. Head to head though, these two sides are level with two wins apiece. Carlton won by 67 points at Docklands in 2012 and by 94 points at the same ground a year later when Jeff Garlett scored four goals while Jarrad Waite and Chris Yarran both booted three. Things turned quickly in the Giants’ favour when they next met at the Sydney Showgrounds in 2014. The home side won by eight points after an even first quarter. Rhys Palmer scored three goals as the Giants won 15.10 (100) to 14.8 (92). Last year at Docklands, the Giants unleashed their power to win by 78 points, 19.21 (135) to 9.3 (57). Jeremy Cameron scored five goals in the rout. Seven of Carlton’s 22 are no longer with the Blues – Tom Bell, Andrew Carrazzo, David Ellard, Chris Judd, Troy Menzel, Matthew Watson and Chris Yarran. This could be the first time Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips, Lachie Plowman, Liam Sumner and Mark Whiley line up against their old side. Former GWS Giants list manager Stephen Silvagni brought all but Whiley with him when he rejoined Carlton over the summer.

ST KILDA GEELONG

Saturday 6.55pm, Etihad Stadium Geelong kept its faint finals hopes alive for one more week last season when it escaped from its round 21 clash with St Kilda at Docklands with a draw. The Cats had their whiskers in front for most of the second half and looked the likely winners when Nakia Cockatoo’s goal put them in front by a point at the 26-minute mark of the last quarter. However, Shane Savage’s second behind in time-on squared the ledger, forcing the first stalemate between these sides in 211 encounters. Steve Johnson finished with a game-high four goals. Geelong had won its previous five clashes with the Saints, its best winning run since its eight in a row from 1989-93. St Kilda last beat Geelong in the 2010 second qualifying final by four points, a result that eventually put the Cats’ premiership defence that season beyond them. After 14 games at Docklands, the Cats lead seven wins to six with one draw. But they haven’t beaten the Cats at home since 2009.

Gold Coast must leave its balmy surrounds for the frosty cold of Launceston and an imposing clash with the premiers. The Suns have never beaten Hawthorn in seven attempts. Three of those have been in Launceston. In 2011, they lost by 71 points in their first AFL season after Shane Savage and Luke Breust both scored four goals. In 2014, they lost by 53 points with Breust and this time Luke Hodge scoring three goals. Last year, the margin was the same but in a lower scoring game as Hawthorn won 14.9 (93) to 6.4 (40). Breust was on song again with three goals as was David Hale. Breust has 19 goals in seven games against the Suns. His best haul against any one opponent is 22 goals against Geelong (13 games) and Fremantle (10 games). The Suns have mustered just 23 shots on goal in their last two games against Hawthorn in Launceston. Their highest score in seven games against the Hawks is 14.13 (97) in 2011 when they came closest to victory, losing at Carrara by nine points in a game the Hawks rested several players before the finals.

HALL OF FAME INDUCTION A bid to increase the prestige of induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame has seen eligibility of players increased from three years to five years since they retired from the game. The new criteria was approved recently by the AFL Commission. Nigel Lappin, Paul Bagshaw, Ben Hart, Verdun Howell, Maurice Rioli and Ray Sorrell, representing a vast cross section of players from around the country, were inducted recently. Under previous guidelines players could be chosen in the Hall of Fame three years after they had retired but the extra two years now is hoped to bolster the prestige of earning selection.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 13

BY CHRIS KENDALL

Central District v Adelaide

West Adelaide v Glenelg

Saturday 2.10pm, My Money House Oval BROADCAST: Live stream at www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda Stadium BROADCAST: Seven

The drought was finally broken for West last week, recording its first win of 2016 at the expense of North Adelaide. Trent Stubbs’s five goals proved the difference as West held off the fast finishing Roosters, in a contrast to Glenelg’s loss to Sturt where the Tigers were never really in the contest at any point. The result virtually ended their slender hopes of finals action, so how they approach the remainder of the season will be interesting. The first entry in the W column may be just the tonic to build the confidence for the Bloods, particularly if they can show the same dash and carry illustrated in the opening three quarters last week. They will need to be on their guard against a unit that has produced the odd upset this season. But overall there was a lot to like last week to give West the nod here.

Central is hanging into finals contention, thanks to defeating Norwood in addition to North’s shock loss to West last week leaving it two games clear in fifth spot. But Central would be looking toward a couple of big scalps to build its claims to being more than just making up numbers. Adelaide sits in fourth and while some of its fortunes depends on the AFL arm, it is still building its own case to being a threat in September. The wider spaces of Elizabeth and respective game styles suggest this should be a free flowing, attacking game that lends itself to high scoring, although a forecast week of showers may make conditions a little tricky. Both teams average more than 90 points a game and if this turns into a shootout, it may come down to which team can find the most x-factors in attack to notch two to three quick goals. That balance seems to sit with Adelaide in that case.

TIP: West Adelaide 13-24

TIP: Adelaide 13-24

EAGLES v South Adelaide

Sturt v Norwood

Saturday 2.10pm, Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval. BROADCAST: Life FM

A bye arrived at the right time for a Eagles unit aiming to freshen up ahead of the run home to September with Michael Godden’s charges playing an impressive brand that is breaking open games quickly when allowed the latitude. South looked a little flat in the first half against Port but blew the game right open in the last hour to move back into second place and set itself up strongly for the double chance. Second place will again be on the line here for the winner, South knowing it can build a two- game buffer on the Eagles with victory. Much of this, however, will depend on closing down the playmaking of the likes of James Boyd, Jarred Allmond and Lachlan McGregor, with the latter proving dangerous in attack. The threat of McGregor may force South coach Brad Gotch into deploying a smaller defender which may upset his defensive structures slightly. The Eagles look well placed here to move just behind Sturt on the ladder.

TIP: Woodville/West Torrens 1-12

Sunday 2.10pm, Peter Motley Oval BROADCAST: Seven

The eastern derby to wind up round 13, with one team surging into premiership contention and the other languishing near the bottom. Had you correctly predicted which team would fill these roles pre-season, however, many would have asked for lotto numbers. Sturt set the tone early against Glenelg and could not be reeled in, while Norwood’s last quarter collapse against Central again raised questions about its ability to run out four quarters. Even with the pressure of finals now off the agenda for Norwood, it is still difficult to see the reduced expectations freeing up the playing group enough to play a style here that will trouble the league leader. Sturt has shown a range of gears this season, able to dominate a game early and hold on, or come from behind and take the points. Much of this spells danger for a Redleg outfit struggling to put together four quarters. This looks unlikely to change here.

Aussies march into ODI Tri-Series final A free-wheeling Glenn Maxwell and mature Mitch Marsh trumped Marlon Samuels’ ton as Australia defeated West Indies and sealed its place in the ODI tri-series final.

of his short career.

Steve Smith’s side needed a victory in Barbados to advance to the series final, also at Kensington Oval on Monday (AEST).

Smith’s dismissal ended a 122-run partnership and left the visitors wanting a further 62 runs from 50 deliveries.

Marsh stepped up, top scoring with 79 as Australia hauled in its target of 283 with eight balls remaining and six wickets in hand.

The required run-rate blew out to almost nine an over but Maxwell was in his element.

Maxwell, dropped by selectors earlier in the tournament, smacked a couple of astonishing boundaries in a thrilling finish. He defused mystery spinner Sunil Narine with a switch-hit six in the 46th over then creatively helped Australia take 17 runs off the next over. The allrounder’s quick-fire 46 came off 26 deliveries and put the result beyond doubt. It was Marsh and Steve Smith (78) who did the bulk of the work.

In a drama-filled contest, Marsh was scratchy at the start of his innings but finished in formidable form.

Samuels’ 125 was the 35-year-old’s first century in any format against Australia and lifted West Indies to 8-282. Smith would have banked on chasing a much smaller target after winning the toss and snaring two catches as West Indies slipped to 3-31. But man-of-the-match Samuels and Denesh Ramdin (91) steadied in style, breaking records as they feasted on some wayward bowling and listless fielding in a 192-run stand. Sloppy fielding was again an issue for Australia.

Darren Bravo found Smith short of his ground in the 42nd over but missed a crucial run-out chance when Marsh was on 44.

Matthew Wade dropped a one-handed catch when Samuels was on 65 and West Indies was 3-132 in the 29th over.

Aussie-born Billy to lead England charge

illy Vunipola will have plenty of local support as he tries to get England on the front foot in pursuit of a series clean sweep against the Wallabies.

After England was forced to defend for most of last week’s second Test, Vunipola wants to lead a more assertive effort at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old back-rower was born in Sydney, but moved to Britain when he was six years old and doesn’t have strong memories of his early time in Australia.

“It would be nice if we got a few phases of attack and try and impose ourselves on them in a different way,” Vunipola said.

He is however a perennial visitor to Sydney where some of his relatives still live.

“This week we definitely want to get more front-foot ball and I guess that comes down to people like me.”

“One of my grandmothers lives here and my mum’s family is based here and I come here every year on my way to Tonga, so it’s quite a familiar place for me,” Vunipola said.

He stressed England had no option but to bring the same attitude as they did for the first two Tests if they wanted to fulfil their preseries goal of a clean sweep.

“We can’t let up now because we’ve made promises and you can’t break them,” Vunipola said. He hasn’t been on a losing side in three Tests against Australia, but said it had been far from an easy task in the forwards battle during the first two Tests. “It’s been a tough old scrap,” he said. Trying to reach the target of becoming the world’s best No.8 set by England coach Eddie Jones, Vunipola said he still had up to six players ahead of him, including Australia’s David Pocock. ROC make their push

achieve a crucial 23-point win over Henley that saw them leap over Port District. Unley Mercedes’ Oliver Moss, James Khabbaz and Nick Petch now have the club’s fate in their own hands, holding a one-win buffer over the Magpies. The Blacks continue to impress but whether they have the class to match the sides above them is still to be seen. They get that change to show it on Saturday though when Prince Alfred OC comes to University Oval. Their hopes to prove themselves will rest on their top-liners such as Jack Noonan, Andrew Alesci and the Paynter boys again.

Adelaide University will be out to prove itself against top side Prince Alfred OC this week. Photo: Jayson Vowles

In one of the clashes of the season so far, the Reds and Payneham Norwood Union highlighted why they were the top two of Division 1 at the moment.

ostrevor OC’s tight win over Salisbury North could prove a season turner for the club still trying to find its true spot among simply being a finals combatant to being a genuine premiership contender.

Gullies were still too good for Goodwood Saints last week.

While it didn’t change positions on the ladder for now, the visiting Falcons just gained the ascendancy late in the contest to take away an encouraging 16-point victory.

It will be up to Adam Maschotta, Josh Hand and Josh Flynn to send another competitor packing this week.

Matthew Nye, Tyler Brimacombe and Liam Davis can’t lower their intensity for winless Henley this week.

The hard fought five-point victory over a serious top-five challenger will enhance belief among the playing group but they can further prove their title credentials with a win over an injury-hit Tea Tree Gully this week.

The gap to fifth spot is widening for the Hawks and Saints now so any more losses will make it a bridge too far.

New premiership fancy emerges

I

n an open title fight, St Peters OC has emerged as another candidate ready to rise.

SPOC dented fellow ex-college outfit Scotch OC’s hopes but added its name to the top premiership fancies alongside Modbury, Old Ignatians and Sacred Heart OC. Thomas Butler, Sam Roberts and Daniel Franklin of St Peters OC will look to push for a top-three position over the run home to the finals. Their next opponent PHOS Camden is facing the dual conundrum of still being in touch with the top five but also trying to stay above the demotion line. Winning will improve the Phantoms’ fortunes. At home, they could spring a surprise. They cannot afford too many close losses like last week’s fivepointer to Sacred Heart OC. SHOC could do PHOS Camden a favour by

beating Gaza to ensure the gap to fifth spot remains manageable for the seventh-placed side. The Eagles appear unsteady following a loss to ninth-placed Portland last week. With Sacred Heart OC pursuing higher rewards, its trip to Klemzig on Saturday could determine the fate of several sides moving ahead. SHOC’s Matthew Delmenico, Jacob Laba and Mitchell Bosley will hope it ends in their favour. Portland improved its probability of rising out of the relegation zone with an important 21-point win over Gaza. However, Old Ignatians will present a more challenging opponent on Saturday. The likes of Cameron Ortlepp, David Boyd and Lachlan Collins from Old Ignatians look to have the measure of their Thunder counterparts in Alex Bradley, Gavin Sheppard and Tim Milera.

Broadview will be hoping to achieve success over bottom side SMOSH West Lakes to elevate itself from relegation too. The Lions, received an 136-point whipping from ladder leader Modbury last week. Modbury should face more of a contest against Scotch OC on Saturday but Michael Bennett, Matthew Gibson and Matt Fogden are sure to be just as ruthless. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Last week the Kings beat Gepps Cross by 122 points with Eljay Connors, Matt Falzon and Ben Williams best. The Kings look hot here by 26-40 points.

Athelstone will look to keep its winning way against improving Plympton. The Raggies were under pressure all day against Golden Grove before winning by five points. Best for the Raggies were Justin Sheedy, Daniel Sullivan and Heath Fitzpatrick. Plympton seventh, played well to beat Seaton Ramblers by 27 points. Cynan

Smith, Adrian Tan and Stuart Taverner led the way. The home side can win by 32-46 points. Seaton Ramblers host Flinders Park in another key game for finals contenders. The Rams could not match Plympton last week to go down by 27 points with Todd Gates, Callan Annett and Bradyn Wild among the best. Flinders Park is looking polished with one loss for the season so far. It beat Kilburn by 40 points last week with Daniel Blythe, Campbell Smith and Walter Wilson leading the way. The Reds should take the points by 28-42 points. Mitcham is home to Gepps Cross in a fourth versus ninth match up. Demons, Magpies aim for top billing

T

op place on the ladder after this round could be the prize for the winner of Eastern Park and Salisbury at Dwight Reserve on Saturday. The Demons were outstanding in beating North Haven last week by 70 points to see them jump to top place. Chris Knapp led the charge with eight goals, while Brad Woodward (five goals) and Ashley Clifton were big-game players. Salisbury beat Kenilworth by 76 points at home with Ryan Paget, Jay Mansfield (five goals) and Jamahl Weetra starring. A great game on the cards with the Demons looking hot by 20-34 points. Edwardstown and North Haven is another beauty in a fourth versus fifth contest. Towns had the bye last week while North Haven suffered a big loss to Eastern Park by 70 points last week at home. Mark Rowe, Ty Duerden and Stefan Cochrane led the way for the

Magpies. A lowscoring game is likely with Towns just holding the edge by 12-26 points. Hope Valley faces a tough test at home when it meets second side Westminster Old Scholars. Hope Valley has been competitive in most games, last week around the mark to lose to Colonel Light Gardens by 22 points. Devin Payne (three goals), James Dowling and Daniel Williamson were solid. Westminster recorded a handy 26-point win against Pooraka at Lindblom Park, the Dragons enjoying good games form Brett Mitchell, Cody Boylan and Scott Blesing (two goals). Thomas Easton kicked four goals. Hard to see the Demons putting the Dragons to the sword here. Westminster to salute by 16-32 points. Kenilworth hosts Pooraka in an eighth versus ninth match up. The Kookaburras are desperate to break through for their first win of the season after a couple of near misses.

Last week they weren’t in the hunt to go down by 76 points to Salisbury. Luke Gane, Zach Friend and Andrew Liverton were among the mainstays. Pooraka was competitive against Wesminster Old Scholars to go down by 26 points with Jason Hay, Frank Timpano and Joshua Slater playing solid games. It is tempting to go for Kenilworth to break through but Pooraka’s form has been a bit stronger. A flip of the coin sees the Bulls by 10-20 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Panthers join top-three hunt S mithfield is poised to stakes it claims for the Division 5 premiership as it consolidates its spot in the top five and even positions itself for a stab at the double chance.

The Panthers levelled themselves up with this week’s opponent, third-placed Lockleys, and is also just one win behind the top two. They just got through a trying shoot-out

against bottom side Pulteney last week which tested their fortitude but they held on in the 39-goal contest to win by seven points. More relieved than anything to come away successful, Ben Towell, Michael Lane and Anthony Thompson will look to lift further against the Demons whose late charge was not enough to reel in Glenunga last week.

The Rams would have gained much-needed confidence from that result in which they were dominant for three quarters and maintained their slim finals prospects. Andrew Mitchell, Damian Harvey and Sam Venning will need a four-quarter effort against second-placed Blackfriars OS on Saturday to ensure they do not lose touch. The Hounds dropped only their second game of the year when main premiership rival Hectorville pulled out all stops to punish its fellow Hounds for their mistakes and claim a telling 44-point victory. Hectorville took back the top mantle at the same time and is unlikely to hand it back easily.

CBCOC just needs to continue winning if it is to rise into the top five this season. Photo: Jayson Vowles

It meets an Elizabeth outfit which also rose to new levels last week to claim win number two for season 2016.

The solid 23-point triumph over Greenacres would give Eagles Peter Furber, Ben Taylor and Stephen James greater inspiration to ward off relegation. They may be up against it this week, though, facing the likes of Owen Giovine, Josh Ingall and Danny Forde from the Hounds. CBCOC won’t be able to take cellar dweller Pulteney for granted on Saturday after the Navy Blues’ performance last week. The Dolphins highlighted their finals credentials in beating Rosewater by 26 points last week but still can’t afford any blunders or their grip on the top five will loosen too much. However, Jonty Rutai, Nathan Byrnes and Adam Glenn of CBCOC should be enthused to defeat a fellow collegiate rival.

Tigers, Raiders ready to rumble

rahma Lodge and Houghton Districts kick off the round in a four versus eighth match up. The Tigers have been solid for most of the season, last week beating Mawson Lakes by 27 points with Darren Huitema among the best. Houghton Districts still has a chance of making the finals but it is closer to relegation territory. Last week the Raiders lost to Mitchell Park by 20 points, Dave Keetch leading the way. The Tigers look strong by 28-44 points. Mitchell Park and Fitzroy sees another clash of the Lions. Mitchell Park was a good winner against the Raiders last week, Adam Halime playing well with four goals. Fitzroy produced a top effort to beat Trinity Old Scholars away by 12 points, Shaun Smith among his side’s best. No surprise to see the Mitchells get up but Fitzroy looks good by 12-26 points. Woodville South looks solid at home for Mawson Lakes in their clash. The Cats, second, lost to top side West Croydon by 11 points with Alex Dankiewicz one of his side’s best. Mawson Lakes battled hard against Brahma Lodge to go down by 27 points with Mitchell Buchanan best. The Cats by 38-52 points. Ingle Farm and Trinity Old Scholars look well

matched in the third versus fifth contest. But the Farmers have won five more games. Last week the Bulldogs edged out Adelaide Lutheran by 10 points with Zach Hancock a top contributor. Trinity lost by 12 points at home to Fitzroy with Stefan Cavallaro leading his side’s best. Ingle Farm looks to have the depth here by 22-38 points. Adelaide Lutheran has the home ground but West Croydon should have the answers in a ninth versus top contest. The Lutheran Bulldogs saw a good game from Jake Anspach in their loss to Ingle Farm last week, while West Crodyon showed class to beat Woodville South by 11 points in a top-of-the-table clash. Out to keep finals dream alive

S

t Pauls OS and Unley Mercedes Jets meet in a crucial contest this week to avoid slipping out of finals contention.

Both are level on points with fourth-placed Adelaide University on the Division 7 ladder, victory vital to keep finals hopes alive. The Saints quashed Central United’s hopes last week and would be favoured to do the same to the Jets on Saturday. Unley Mercedes Jets were humbled by Flinders University last week and with several key players still missing due to injury could be in for another rout from the likes of Sean Bockman, Liam Davies and Cody Symes from St Pauls OS. At home, though, they may be able to lift for what’s on the line. Prince Alfred OC was given a fright by Payneham Norwood Union last week but managed to win by seven points. Positions on the ladder did not match the fight shown by the home side Falcons who just failed to claim their first win of the season.

The Reds, who host Adelaide University this week, will be out to reclaim the double chance spot which they lost due to Flinders University’s large percentage booster last week. The Blacks lost touch with the opportunity to gain the double chance after losing by 25-points to the division benchmark Salisbury West. They are capable of bouncing back quickly but will need to restrict the influence of Prince Alfred OC’s Jack Ramsey, Matthew Favell and Tom Gray to do so. Coming off the break, North Pines would least like to confront the Tigers this week but that is what awaits. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

15 SPORTSBEAT // 23 JUNE 2016

Danish Twist is the winner of her last four starts, sweeping the Provincial Championships Final (1400m), Group Three Dark Jewel (1400m) and Listed June Stakes (1100m) in her run. “It showed that she’s in really good form and that she’s quite adaptable now, to be able to come back to that type of trip,” Lees said. “It just seems when they find that form, if they can maintain it, they’re very hard to stop. “A mare in form with a Group One so close, it was the logical target.” Warwick Farm-based trainer David Pfieffer would like nothing better than to achieve his first Group One success with Cradle Me in the Tatt’s Tiara on Saturday. Cradle Me broke through for a career best Group Two win in the Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) during Eagle Farm’s official reopening on 11 June. “You don’t expect seven year-old

mares to hit career best form but that’s what she’s done,” Pfieffer said.

“Azkadellia looks the one to beat but to steal a quote off (former training boss) Tony (Wildman), (she) has been up longer than the Harbour Bridge, so you just never know.” Azkadellia’s trainer Ciaron Maher was pleased with his hope’s trackwork on Tuesday, describing it as enthusiastic.

Maher said the Tattersall’s Tiara looked a suitable race for Azkadellia with the return to fillies and mares grade to suit after her unplaced run in the Stradbroke Handicap. Her last run against all-female opposition resulted in her first Group One victory in the 2016 Queen of the Turf Stakes during the Sydney autumn carnival. “She pulled up well (from her Stradbroke run),” Maher said. “I was quite happy with her, just in the wrong part of the track (two weeks ago). “Obviously her fitness levels are pretty good. Hopefully, she can find the right path this week. It’s a nice race for her.”

IT’s a joke ABE AND ESTHER WERE FLYING TO AUSTRALIA for a two-week vacation to celebrate their 40th anniversary. Suddenly, the Captain announces, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am afraid I have some very bad news. Our engines have ceased functioning and we need to attempt an emergency landing. Luckily, I see an uncharted island below us and we should be able to land on the beach. However, the odds are that we may never be rescued and will have to live on the island for the rest of our lives!” Thanks to the skill of the flight crew, the plane lands safely. An hour later Abe turns to his wife and asks, “Esther, did we pay off our American Express card yet?” “No, sweetheart,” she responds. “Esther, did you remember to send cheques for the Visa and MasterCard this month?” he asks. “Oh, no! I’m sorry. I forgot that as well,” she says. Abe grabs her and gives her the biggest kiss in 40 years. Esther pulls away and asks him, “What was that for?” “They’ll find us then!” Abe answers.
