The deliberate out-of-bounds rule seems to be the one in vogue this season and is probably one of the most contentious. Fans certainly don’t like it but the AFL wants the game to flow with limited stoppages but that’s simply part of our game. Last weekend we became even more puzzled, in particular with North Melbourne defender Michael Firrito’s deliberate rushed decision as well as the 50 metre penalties in the Swans-Hawks clash. Across the league, the umpiring is a constant debate with little response but for AFL bosses, especially those in the umpiring department it is to support the men in green even if it contradicts what the Laws of the Game may say. The Firrito incident is a case in point as, from all understanding of the rule, a player is able to use the goal line as a refuge as long as he is under direct pressure from an opposition player or two. This is exactly what the Kangaroo

defender was facing, being tackled at the time.

However, umpires coach Hayden Kennedy has used the deliberate out-of-bounds rule to justify the decision made by umpire Justin Schmitt here. Kennedy conceded Firrito was under pressure, but said the rushed behind was intentional and could have been avoided. In reality this law does not transcribe that the goal line be considered similarly as the rest of the boundary line unless the player is not receiving direct pressure from an opponent.

The “could have been avoided” also does not come into the rule in this instance, unlike other areas of the ground. Schmitt got this one clearly wrong so why not admit it? It is the one area that is lacking at the moment – ‘real transparency’ – which the league is actually encouraging in all other areas of the game. The 50 metre penalty is becoming more and more of a too greater punishment on players when they are barely interacting in the game. The new 10 metre intrusion zone is a blight at present.

THUMBS UP

It was a weekend of positivity for Australian sport. • No shark was going to stop Australian surfer Mick Fanning from facing Jeffrey’s Bay in South Africa again, a year on from the terrifying attack in the same waters, but to win the J-Bay Open was a remarkable post-script to what could have been a deadly story – Fanning’s final words were he’s “going on holidays” which he has certainly well earned. • Forgotten Aussie golfer Aaron Baddeley won on the US Tour for the first time in five years, the junior star won the Barbasol Championship in Alabama on the fourth play-off hole to keep his card with the US PGA. • Former Newcastle Jets goalkeeper and Adelaide United stop-gap keeper Mark Birighitti has signed with English Premier League club Swansea City.

Players are being penalised for being in this area when not really having an impact on what is happening at the time of play.

It then so often results in a crucial goal to the rewarded team for incidents that often do not warrant such an outcome. It is certainly questionable whether it affected the result in Sydney last Thursday night. We have continually called for a smaller distanced penalty, like the 25 metre one in the SANFL, for years now but it regularly falls on deaf ears within the AFL. When players are struggling with their on-field skills and ball use, coaches simply go back to basics. Is it time the umpiring fraternity did the same? The game itself was simple enough to umpire before the AFL began tweaking the rules and coming up with different interpretations for existing ones. This is where the confusion has escalated and with too many different opinions about how a rule should be adjudicated. Make umpires more accountable when they make mistakes – that’s all we want to see. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

It’s not often we give a thumbs down to a local football club.

Rosewater Football Club fills this space for the week. To be booted out of the SA Amateur Football League competition for the remainder of the 2016 season for the alleged assault by former captain and 300 gamer Adam Rumbelow. The alleged assault on the umpire is a shocking blight on the game by the player and club which has had a series of transgressions in competions in recent years. Wonder what SA Premier and Rosewater number one ticket holder Jai Weatherill thinks of all this? Rumbelow was expected to face the league tribunal after Sportsbeat’s deadline.

Standing up to the Giants

ill-in ruckman Jackson Trengove has been doing it for weeks now and last week even took down one of the league’s biggest men in North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein but, on Sunday, all of Port Adelaide will have to bring down the Giants to keep its finals momentum going.

blow, adding further workload onto Jay Schulz and Westhoff.

at present and he won’t gain any reprieve from Adelaide’s leading defender Daniel Talia.

However, it may give neglected John Butcher an opportunity to step up after several good weeks in the SANFL while midfielder Brad Ebert may also be ready to go again after a week’s rest from a bruised lung.

There is no Stevie J to bamboozle the Crows or retiring stars in their wake as added to the mix last year.

Trengove will face another leading ruckman in the competition in Shane Mumford but he should be buoyed by his performance on the Kangaroo big man last Saturday.

Adelaide on Saturday night will hold no fears of facing a Patrick Dangerfield-led Geelong outfit but must overcome a greater hoodoo to beat the Cats – that being Simonds Stadium.

The Power must also bring the intensity and renewed run they regained in that crucial win over North Melbourne to keep their top eight aspirations alive.

The Crows have not won in Geelong for 13 years but no better time to turn that record around than this week.

The main concern for coach Don Pyke will be how to find room for the possible returns of small defenders Rory Laird and Luke Brown who will be vital against the likes of Steven Motlop, James Bartel and Nakia Cockatoo.

While many will question where this drive has been all season, the important thing is that the players haven’t dropped their heads, which would have been easy to do, and continued to work on the areas that had faded from their game. With the Kangaroos tough run home and just needing them to drop two more games than it over the last six rounds of the season, Port Adelaide is in a prime position to realise its finals dream. However, Greater Western Sydney is sure to offer more of a challenge at Adelaide Oval on Sunday evening than the Power faced last week and they must be ready for it. Present in the same manner as last week though and there should be no problems but it will still be a tough contest to overcome the rising young guns of the competition. The mix of Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Toby Greene, Callan Ward, Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Tom Scully and Jeremy Cameron will have fresher legs than the older ones faced by Port Adelaide last week and they have also shown they can match the physicality of more experienced hardened sides. Accordingly, this has the Giants sitting fourth on the AFL ladder and wanting to have an impact in their first finals campaign. They even inflicted the Power with one of their worst losses in many a year when winning by 86 points in round four which the home side will want to atone for this week. Restricting GWS’s fluency from the backline will be imperative from forwards like Chad Wingard, Jake Neade, Jarman Impey, Justin Westhoff and Aaron Young and then through the middle by Ollie Wines, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak and Sam Gray. The loss of key forward Charlie Dixon is a huge

Geelong is not flying high either. Chris Scott’s side is having its issues in finding consistency and not relying too much on Dangerfield as has been the case over recent weeks. The Cats are lacking their usual team gel and goalsneak Tom Hawkins is gravely out of form

Therefore nothing should scare the visitors from breaking their hoodoo this week.

First option to omit would have probably been Ricky Henderson but he was one of Adelaide’s best against Collingwood last week which leaves David Mackay, Paul Seedsman and Mitch McGovern at Pyke’s mercy. Lachie Henderson’s absence would also impact on Geelong’s match-ups on the Crows tall forwards, if he doesn’t recover from last week’s concussion. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Footy footnotes It’s becoming crunch time for all sides in the AFL at the moment, with the final rounds of the season set to prove more exciting than earlier anticipated. • Is Shaun Burgoyne the most important player for the Hawks particularly in tight matches? – wouldn’t the Power still love to have him now? • Swans are standing by fallen defender Michael Talia after his drug arrest last weekend but there just sounds like there is a bit more to the story with another nonSwan involved as well • How long has Lions mentor Justin Leppitsch got left at the helm? – one more week if he losses to the Bombers this week – although Brisbane may want the number one draft pick – he’s certainly in a quandary • Looks like Suns skipper Gary Ablett has taken a swipe at the club’s initial coaching regime, in particular Guy McKenna for poor player development and unsuitable training practices – he believes it has put the young club back a few years from achieving its expected success • Demon young guns Christian Petracca and Angus Brayshaw were overjoyed to finally be playing in the same side together last week with their excitement being shared on Twitter preceding their game

but teammate Max Gawn wasn’t a fan of their lovefest, tweeting “could just have this chat in the change rooms” at which Petracca suggested he’d “ruined the vibe” of the occasion • Wonder what US vice president Joe Biden thought of our game last week? – one may not have expected a Carlton-West Coast clash to enthuse America’s 2IC but he actually got a good game to witness • Does Eddie McGuire never learn? – disappointing that he had to bring up his Adam Goodes gaffe again during the week and blame it on “massive painkillers” – it might not have been forgotten, although dealt with last year, but it didn’t need to be re-raised and definitely not to condone his actions – really, it is time to go, Eddie! • Congratulations to Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell – another joining the 300 club this week • In 2017, we’ll be back to that ‘One day in September’ with the grand final announced for September 30 next year while consultation from clubs has been called for next year’s fixture as well – what would you like to see your club get? • The league will also declare the timing of round 23 matches within the next few weeks – and it’s a big NO to Monday night football in Adelaide • Anyone played the ‘Peeball’ game after last week’s promotion?

AFL PREVIEW ROUND18 BY DION HAYMAN

COLLINGWOOD V NORTH MELBOURNE

WEST COAST V MELBOURNE

North Melbourne hasn’t beaten Collingwood since 2013. The Magpies have won three of their last four games against the Kangaroos including the last two in a row. They last met in round nine last year when the Magpies won by 17 points but only after a massive turnaround. The Roos led by 39 points at half-time and seemingly had the game in their keeping leading 10.6 to 4.3. However, the Magpies swung the game with a withering third quarter burst of 9.2 to 0.3 to lead by 14 points at the last change. North responded to regain the lead with Drew Petrie’s goal at the 17-minute mark but failed to score again as the Pies scored the last three goals of the game to win 17.10 (112) to 14.11 (95). Jamie Elliott scored five goals for the Magpies. Collingwood has won eight of its last 12 games against the Kangaroos at Docklands

West Coast has won its last eight games against Melbourne and is just one more victory away from a new club record streak against the Demons. The Eagles also won eight in a row against Melbourne from 1994-97 with an average winning margin of 52 points. Their average margin in their current streak is 68 points with the last seven wins all being by at least eight goals. Only once has Melbourne exceeded 62 points in this run of outs. The sides last met in round 14 last year in Darwin when West Coast won by 54 points, 16.18 (114) to 9.6 (60). Jack Darling finished with five goals and has 16 in his last four outings against the Demons to go with 15 from Josh Kennedy and 10 from Mark LeCras. Melbourne hasn’t beaten West Coast in Perth since 2002.

Saturday 6.55pm, Etihad Stadium

Saturday 1.15pm, SCG Sydney has won its last six games in a row against Carlton – halfway to equalling its record club streak of 12 straight wins against the Blues achieved between 2001-09. Sydney’s last two wins against Carlton have come with very similar score-lines and identical margins. In round nine last year at the SCG, Sydney won by an even 10 goals, 19.8 (122) to 9.8 (62). Buddy Franklin finished with seven straight goals as the Swans won all but the final quarter. In round two earlier this year at Docklands, it was another 10-goal margin with the Swans winning 20.11 (131) to 10.11 (71). This time, Franklin kicked four goals along with Kurt Tippett while Callum Sinclair scored three. Carlton last beat Sydney in 2011 at Docklands, a year the Blues also beat them at the SCG. It was their only win at the ground in their last 11 appearances though.

Saturday 4.05pm, Domain Stadium

The AFL fixture computer appears stuck serving up another re-match from round two. The Bulldogs thrashed St Kilda by 57 points back in April at Docklands winning 13.15 (93) to 5.6 (36). The Dogs won all four quarters and finished their day with 4.2 to 1.1 in the final term. It was the Saints’ lowest score against the Bulldogs since 1987 at Waverley and their biggest defeat against them since 1993 at Whitten Oval. Tom Boyd kicked three goals, one of just three occasions he has managed that to date. The Bulldogs have now won four of their last five games against St Kilda since wrapping up an eight-game Saints winning streak in 2012. St Kilda’s only win since then was in 2014 by seven points. The Saints lead 12 wins to nine at Docklands with a draw in 2007.

Saturday 6.55pm, Simonds Stadium

Gold Coast beat Fremantle for the first time when they last met in round two at Subiaco. After an even first term, the Suns scored seven goals to two in the second term to open up a 29-point lead at half-time. It was a buffer they held for the rest of the match as they emerged 26-point winners, 19.12 (126) to 14.15 (99). Tom Lynch scored five goals for the winners and Jack Martin four while Hayden Ballantyne scored four for the Dockers. Fremantle won its first five games against the Gold Coast. However, it has had a couple of narrow escapes in Queensland, twice winning by just seven points in 2012 and 2015. The Dockers’ other success at Carrara was in 2013 when they won by 45 points. Freo’s Michael Walters kicked four goals in that match while teammate Jonathan Griffin snared three.

The Crows get another crack at one of their most recent conquerors when they head to Geelong to play the Cats. Geelong has won its last three games against the Crows – its best run since winning five straight from 2007-09. The Cats won their round eight clash by 26 points in Adelaide earlier this year. Inaccuracy in front of goal kept the home side in the match as Geelong led by just two points at the last change but scored 4.3 to 0.3 in the final term to win 13.20 (98) to 11.6 (72). Cat Steven Motlop scored a game-high four goals. Geelong won by 38 points at Kardinia Park in the opening round of 2014 and by 39 points at the same ground in the final round last season after their Adelaide Oval fixture last year was abandoned following Phil Walsh’s death. The Crows last beat Geelong by two points at Football Park in 2013. They haven’t won at Geelong since 2003 and trail 15 wins to three at the ground.

ESSENDON V BRISBANE

Sunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium Fifteen years after meeting in the 2001 grand final, Brisbane and Essendon cross paths at the very bottom of the ladder. It’s a game likely to decide the wooden spoon and number one draft pick. Recent history between these sides heavily favours an Essendon win. The Bombers have won four of their last five games against the Lions since 2011 with Brisbane’s only win in that time being by 10 points at Docklands in 2013. Last year, Essendon won comfortably at the same ground by 58 points, 21.10 (136) to 12.6 (78) after a career-high six goals from Joe Daniher. The Bombers led by only five points at the main break but scored 12 goals to four in the second half. Brisbane has though taken five wins from its 11 games against the Bombers at Docklands.

HAWTHORN V RICHMOND Sunday 2.50pm, MCG

Richmond has caused Hawthorn its share of problems in recent years with three wins from their last five clashes. The Tigers’ most recent win in this fixture came last year in round 18 at the MCG when they recovered from a two-point half-time deficit. Brett Deledio kicked four goals to steer the Tigers to a surprise 18-point win, 10.11 (71) to 7.11 (53). In round seven this year at the MCG, it was the Luke Breust show. The Hawks’ small forward finished with six goals and Jack Gunston four as Hawthorn won by 46 points after leading by just nine at three-quarter-time. Hawthorn won 21.10 (136) to 13.12 (90). Hawthorn leads 27 wins to 18 at the MCG but trails overall 84 wins to 70 after taking a pounding over the years at both Glenferrie and Punt Road Ovals.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 16

BY CHRIS KENDALL

South Adelaide v Central District

Sturt v West Adelaide

Saturday 2.10pm, Hickinbotham Oval Radio: Life FM 107.9

This is a match that suddenly assumes massive proportions in terms of each side’s paths taken to the finals. Central had opportunities last week against Sturt but some sloppy attacking entries late cost it the chance of an upset. The bye gave South time to freshen some tired bodies after a number of away games which saw it slip to the slightly dangerous position of third, with Adelaide only one win behind. The Panthers’ best is more than good enough to push most opponents hard but they can still be prone to concentration lapses that can cost them at vital times. However, the same can be said for Central and if either team drops its guard for 20 minutes or so, then it will open the door for a scoring flurry which both teams are capable of. Overall though, South should hold the edge in an entertaining struggle.

TIP: South Adelaide 13-24

Saturday 2.10pm, Peter Motley Oval live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SANFL App

Sturt continues to take all before it in one of the SANFL’s great fairytales in recent years. Despite many predicting the wooden spoon, the Double Blues sit aloft the ladder after a gritty win over Central last week. The season cannot end quickly enough for West though with the spoon looking set for Milner Road after Norwood’s upset win over North moving it two games clear of bottom. It is really difficult to see where the motivation will come from for West over the remaining rounds. Wanting to finish the season on a good note appears easier said than done at present and with the Double Blues having much higher honours to aim for, it is difficult to see them taking the Bloods lightly and easing up at any time. This could become ugly for the visitors if the home team takes in a ruthless approach to this contest.

TIP: Sturt 61-72

Eagles v Adelaide

Saturday 2.10pm, Maughan Thiem Hyundai Oval live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SANFL App

The Eagles let a golden opportunity to move into top spot slip last week with a shock loss to Port that gave coach Michael Godden some concerns about their mental side. While a lapse was to be expected at some point, it was still a match they would have penciled in for a win. Adelaide also had its concentration questioned when it faded against a rampant Glenelg which appeared much more mentally ready for the contest. These clubs have had some intriguing battles over the years and with so much on the line, this looks to be no exception. Adelaide can’t afford to drop too many more if it has ambitions of the double chance but it really needs to run out games a lot better to be a genuine threat in September. I suspect that the Eagles will be smarting after last week and have a few too many guns here.

TIP: Eagles 13-24

Glenelg v Norwood

Sunday 1.40pm, Gliderol Stadium tv: channel seven

The last fortnight has been outstanding for the young Tigers knocking over the third and fourth placed South and Adelaide respectively in highly impressive style. Their run, willingness to take the game on and move quickly into attack has reaped the richly deserved rewards in a mixed season. Norwood finally broke its duck against North to give it a chance of avoiding the cellar but it still has plenty to do to be certain. There have been loads to like about Glenelg this last fortnight and its most impressive aspect has been its precision disposal from speed of transition. Against an opponent not really known for moving the ball quickly, this spells real danger for the visitors. It’s been a little while since Glenelg has strung together three in a row and also saluted in the television match but I’ll back it to break both ducks here.

TIP: Glenelg 25-36

Winterbottom ready make things frosty for Red Bull I

t has all been smooth sailing for the Red Bull team over the first half of the season but defending Supercars champion Mark Winterbottom is ready to make things frosty for the 2016 frontrunners.

caused some frustration for the six-time Supercars champion and an early error from van Gisbergen forced it to switch Whincup to the non-preferred strategy, resulting in him finishing off the podium on the Sunday.

can do that they’re going to disappear,” Whincup said.

Winterbottom believes it is only a matter of time that the pressure of the title fight will change the dynamic between Red Bull teammates Mark Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen.

It was the most awkward moment of the season for the Red Bull outfit and Winterbottom suggests the mood will only intensify for his rival as the championship race becomes closer.

“If we string three or four rounds together we’ll be much more confident.”

The Holden duo sit one-two in the championship standings after the last round in Townsville, just 53 points apart while Winterbottom is 75 points behind Whincup.

“We’ll see what happens, there’s a long way to go,” he said of the title fight.

Whincup lead van Gisbergen to the line in the Saturday race but van Gisbergen got on top on the Sunday.

“It’s all ‘lovey dovey’ at the moment, they want each other up here (on the podium), but there’ll be a point where they don’t.

Pre-season talk of potential internal friction with another top title contender joining the Red Bull group this year has proven unfounded.

“We’ll keep fighting the good fight.”

However, communication issues between Whincup and his engineer in Townsville

“Those two are going to have to race each other at some stage.

With all teams still trying to find consistency, the battle resumes at the Ipswich SuperSprint this weekend. “No one has been consistent and if someone

It will be Winterbottom’s 400th championship race on Saturday and he should feel well at home after winning on the Saturday in Ipswich last year and finishing third on the Sunday. The Queensland Raceway at Ipswich is also set to go through a transformation over coming years, with a new loop adding a further seven corners to the long-criticised existing six-turn, 3.21km layout, which has remained unchanged since the venue opened in 1999. The $220 million redesign ensures that the current layout remains untouched and can continue to be used independently of the new section.

Aussies ready for slow grind in Sri Lanka

ustralia’s top nine each reached double figures but none went on to score a century in the visitor’s first innings of their tour match against a Sri Lankan XI in Colombo on Tuesday. And that should serve as a lesson in patience leading into next Tuesday’s first Test in Kandy according to opener Joe Burns. “That’s the one disappointing thing to come out of the day,” said Burns, who top-scored for the Aussies with 72. “All our batters got starts and spent some time at the crease but for no one to go on and get a big score.”

Australia has typically struggled with the bat on recent tours of the sub-continent, scoring above 350 just twice in its past 12 innings. However Burns believes the Australians need to change their naturally attacking approach to turn their fortunes around. “We’ve talked about as a batting group that we’re going to have to be really patient for long periods on the sub-continent,” he said. “If they bowl good areas then it’s just tough work, it’s tough to score, it’s slow-going.

lead of 202 over the hosts with one day left to play. Burns, Steve Smith and Stephen O’Keefe each scored half-centuries, however Burns added just eight runs in the opening 45 minutes of day two before being dismissed. “You’re kind of at the mercy of the ball, the wicket, the fielding situation,” he said. “When bowlers are bowling straight to straight fields then you hit the fielders a lot.

“You have to be committed to bat all day.” Australia went to stumps at 9-431, holding a

Phantoms ghost into top five P HOS Camden has glided smoothly into the top five on the back of favourable results around Division 2 last week.

the end of the minor round, when it welcomes the Lions to Hunter Park this week.

At one point looking to be in danger of fighting off relegation, the Phantoms have quietly and unexpectedly risen to heights that even they probably didn’t see as possible a month or so ago.

While still in reach of the other top five contenders, Portland must beat the top sides to keep those chances alive.

However, Old Iggies were no match for ladder leader Modbury last week.

Chris Burns, Sam Hofmeyer and Tim Worden from the Hawks are unlikely to give their opponent that opportunity.

Their position is not secure though, which makes every week crucial from here on, particularly this week when fourth-placed PHOS Camden hosts fifthplaced Broadview. The Phantoms continued Scotch OC’s demise by handing out a 104-point thumping on their opposition’s home patch while the Tigers took it up to second-placed Sacred Heart OC but couldn’t complete their match favourably, failing by 22 points after dictating the run of play in the first half, 13 points up at the main break. PHOS Camden’s Jake Scharenberg, Mark Ruwoldt and Pat Hamden will be eager to consolidate their current top-five position and not drop out after just one week. In another vital encounter, Scotch OC’s finals prospects hang in the balance as it faces Gaza on Saturday in a match that could determine its fate for 2016. It will definitely be tough with the Eagles

Second meets third when Sacred Heart OC comes up against St Peters OC on Saturday.

The battle for the top five is hotting up and PHOS Camden faces a crucial meeting against Broadview on Saturday to hold its spot. Photo: Jayson Vowles also in the fight to realise their finals potential. Gaza had no trouble accounting for SMOSH West Lakes last week, winning by 74 points, but Brayden Lauder, Adrian Stephens and Chris Radetti will be well aware that they will have to beat sides above them to reclaim a finals berth. The other side level in the battle Old Ignatians can improve its percentage, which could prove the deciding factor at

Both strong winners last week and with a qualifying final home advantage on the line, it should be a tight contest between the likes of Taylor Angel, Jacob Laba and Peter Spurling from SHOC and Brad Hartman, Sam Roberts and Luke Trenorden from SPOC. ilburn and Golden Grove have no chance of making finals but will be desperate for victory to boost confidence.

Bottom-placed Kilburn was thrashed by Mitcham last week with Ryan Wielchowski, Shane Souter and Rick Fox among the leaders. Golden Grove hasn’t recaptured last year’s form but pushed Flinders Park for most of the game to go down by 23 points, Joel Horskins (six goals), Joshua Ingram and Corey Pressler among the best. Grove to get in the groove by 22-38 points. Flinders Park and Walkerville have different agendas this Saturday – the Reds to win for the double chance and the Cats to stave off relegation fears for another week. Flinders Park was a solid winner against Golden Grove with James Schwarz, Daniel Blythe (four goals) and Jay Hansen among the best. Walkerville went down to Plympton by four points with Ty

Allen, Jed Woolford and Rory O’Brien playing well. Parks by 44-62 points. Athelstone and Pembroke Old Scholars look set for a top battle in a first versus second match-up. The Raggies have been outstanding all season, beating most sides easily and scoring big. Last week the Raggies crunched Gepps Cross by 85 points with Josh Sykes and Luke Rander kicking four goals each. Pembroke fell away against Seaton Ramblers after quarter time to go down by 27 points. Ben Williams, Ryan Marini and Charles Canny led the way. The Raggies look good again by 14-28 points. Seaton Ramblers and Mitcham meet in an absorbing game with both sides locked on nine wins in a fourth versus fifth contest. The Rams were solid in their win against Pembroke with Todd Gates, Sean Coard and Michael Parker among the stars. Mitcham hit the scoreboard hard to kick 29.22 against Kilburn

with Brett Aitken (four goals), Simon Tucker and Daniel Hardy playing fine games. The Rams at home by 16-32 points. Plympton is home to bottom side Gepps Cross in a sixth versus ninth match. The Bulldogs are still a rough chance to make the finals, last week staying alive with a two-point win against Walkerville. Jake Ferraro (three goals), Stuart Taverner and Brodie McLeod were solid. Gepps Cross could not break the tight Athelstone defence to go down by 75 points, Mark Boothey, Ashley Benz and Jason Mordaunt among the best. The Bulldogs by 44-64 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

astern Park and Hope Valley, both known as the Demons, should provide a good spectacle despite it being a top versus eighth match-up. Eastern Park is flying, on top of the ladder and kicking some big scores. Last week it had to work hard to beat bottom side Kenilworth by 31 points with Corey Coad, Paul Jones and Brad Woodward (four goals) leading the way. Hope Valley produced one of its best results of the season when it beat North Haven at home by 12 points after trailing at quarter and half time. Daniel Williamson, Lee Duggan and Devin Payne were among the best. The Eastern demons appear to have too many scoring options and should win by 40-58 points. Edwardstown and Kenilworth meet at Edwardstown in fifth against bottom clash.

Towns have been up and down in their first season back in the league, last week going down to Westminster Old Scholars by 38 points. Joshua Teisseire, Michael Curtis and Liam Clarke played well, while Rhett Davis kicked four goals. Kenilworth battled strongly in its loss to Eastern Park with Peter Diamandopoulos, Luke Gane and Shaun Clarke among the better players. A win to Towns would sew up a place in the finals. This should be the case by 38-50 points. North Haven and Salisbury are both known as the Magpies and both are very close on the ladder in third and fourth places respectively. North Haven was outgunned by Houghton Districts by 12 points away in a lowscoring match with Mark Cocchiaro, Matthew Mooney and Tom Haythorpe

playing strongly. Salisbury had the bye last week and before that beat Colonel Light Gardens by 19 points with Jarrod Gray, Daniel Carey and Nathan Kennedy among the better players. Another tough game to assess. Maybe North Haven by 12-27 points. Colonel Light Gardens and Westminster Old Scholars is another intriguing match with plenty on the line. The Dragons look too good here by 16-34 points. Pooraka has the bye. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Lockleys on a high

W

e have a new clubhouse leader in Division 5 with Lockleys taking over the top mantle following some shock results last week. The Demons have risen to highlight their premiership potential in a wide open competition.

Maniotis and co lifting on home soil, Greenacres could produce another twist to this intriguing season.

Previous ladder leaders Hectorville and Blackfriars OS both suffered unexpected losses to see them slip down a few rungs on the ladder.

Neither will want to give any more leverage to the Demons and will be looking to atone against CBCOC and Pulteney respectively.

It was a welcome sight for Lockleys which saw its destructive 58-point victory over Elizabeth also rewarded with top position. Now it faces a tricky encounter away to Greenacres on Saturday but Tom McDonough, Steve Gatis and Luke Detullio cannot allow last week’s achievements go to waste. The Dragons brought CBCOC’s finals aspirations spiralling while slightly enhancing their own prospects of pinching fifth spot, with a heart-stopping three-point triumph. With Mitchell Carver, Ricky Smith, Kye

Hectorville fell to an emerging Smithfield by 23 points last week and Blackfriars OS dropped another crucial encounter to Rosewater by just six points.

The Dolphins are slowly watching their finals hopes slide away so cannot let Rosewater gain any greater benefits at this late stage of the minor round while the Navy Blues produced an upset of their own, beating Glenunga by 27 points and curtailing the Rams’ top five chances. Pulteney’s Sheldon Currie, Joel Aish and Chris Sampson would like to give a top-three side a scare this week. Things have opened up further for Smithfield as well, with the double chance and even top spot well within its reach.

Panthers Mark Garner, Quinton Graham and Anthony Francis will need to be aware that Glenunga will present a similar challenge this week though.

League news Rosewater Football Club has been dismissed from the South Australian Amateur Football League competition after a series of transgressions. The most recent one involved former captain and 300 gamer Adam Rumbleow who was reported for allegedly assaulting an umpire last Saturday, visit the league’s website for more details. www.adelaidefootballleague.com.au BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Double chances hopes for Tigers, Bulldogs Brahma Lodge and Ingle Farm meet in a key match for both teams pushing for the double chance in the finals. The Tigers were too strong for Mitchell Park last week, getting home by 37 points with Dylan Brooks among the side’s best. Ingle Farm is travelling nicely in third place with a good win against Mawson Lakes to take into this week’s match. Kym Sumner was a key player with four goals. Tough to pick but the Farmers can get up by 12-26 points. West Croydon and Fitzroy clash in a top versus sixth contest. The unbeaten Hawks beat Houghton Districts by 51 points last week with Tim Horsman an outstanding player for the winner. Fitzroy has been solid recently, last Saturday beating Adelaide Lutheran by 51 points with Shaun Smith leading the way. It looks like a win to the Hawks by 48-62 points. Mawson Lakes and Houghton Districts lock horns in a fifth versus ninth match with one win between them. Andy Carr was best for Mawson Lakes in its loss to Ingle Farm on Saturday, while Houghton Districts battled hard

to beat Trinity OS by 19 points on Saturday as Jake McCulloch was among the best. Mitchell Park could not match Brahma Lodge last week to fall by 37 points as Bryn Zerna showed good form. The Cats look good here by 42-58 points. Adelaide Lutheran is home to Trinity Old Scholars as bottom meets seventh. Lutheran trailed all day against Fitzroy with Josiah Elms among the leading players. The Lions pushed Woodville South last week to go down by 19 points with Chad Spurr (six goals) standing tall. The Lions can win again by 14-30 points.

P

rince Alfred OC can, at the least, seal a home elimination final with victory over its closest challenger Flinders University this week. The Reds can then pursue the double chance, if they feel that is the best route to the grand final. They will be mindful of the fact that the Crabs defeated them in their first meeting earlier in the year. This clash will be home on Park 9 on Saturday. The Crabs will be full of confidence too following their relentless pulling apart of Payneham Norwood Union by an unfathomable 184 points.

Prince Alfred OC from the top two this week. North Pines had its points taken away from its on-field win over Unley Mercedes Jets last week due to an APPS indiscretion and thus the victory was awarded to the Jets. Adelaide University should maintain its hold on a finals berth when it encounters bottom side Payeham Norwood Union this week. Whether the Blacks will be given an opportunity to steal back a spot in the top four is still to be known, with its Uni counterparts likely to make it hard for them. One can see another massive result for Salisbury West on Saturday when it meets Central United.

Josh Waters, Josh Nitschke and Zac Matthews can keep Flinders University’s top-two hopes alive with victory here.

Adam Jones, Andrew Curyer and Jace Ryles would be enjoying these less taxing games, leading into the finals.

St Pauls OS currently sits second where it is should still be after Saturday’s contest against North Pines.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

The Saints are just one percent ahead of the Reds so winning by a good margin will help their chances of keeping it at season’s end. Ben Clarke, Wayne Nassereddine and Nick Morasca prevented Adelaide University from regaining its top-four spot and they can ward off

THE VILLAGE TAVERN SA WOMEN’S FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Roos a skip ahead

M

orphettville Park has declared its dominance within the South Australian Women’s Football League this year.

Top contributors for the Blacks have been Sarah Watherston, Stacey Richardson, Julie Power and Whitney Benson while at the Bloods, the top guns have been Kirsty Degabriele, Rachael Killian, Rebekka McMahon and Brooke Trevena.

The Roos’ two teams top the ladders in both divisions of the women’s competition.

Clear in fourth spot, Modbury will be the other finalist in the top level.

In Division 1, they lead regular top performers in Adelaide University and West Adelaide.

The likes of Chloe Scheer, Danielle Stewart, Nikki Thompson and Nicole Tucker have led the way for the Hawks.

Lexia Edwards is a particular standout this season for Morphettville Park, having scored 46 goals so far, leading to the half century likely to be raised inside the next two weeks. In one game recently Edwards kicked 20 goals in a match so could she still push for a 100 in a season? Courtney Cramey has been another showing why she is a top contender for the Adelaide Crows women’s side next year, as many of the girls will be vying for including fellow Roos Tait Mackrill, Caitlyn Swanson, Deni Varnhagen and Lauren Buchanan, among others.

In Division 2, Morphettville Park is a decided percentage margin ahead of Mount Lofty on top of the ladder as well. They have skipped ahead of Christies Beach, Mount Barker and Adelaide University’s second outfit while Flinders University and Western Suburbs appear too far back to see finals action. With five rounds before the finals, high interest still remains. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Leaping Lapierre

The 32 year-old born in Mauritius is closing in on his personal best mark of 8.40 metres, set back in 2010. He has managed a mark of 8.78 metres in Perth in the same year but it was achieved with an illegal tail wind. His season-best so far has been 8.31 metres set in an IAAF Diamond League event in Morocco in May and has regularly been on the podium throughout the rest of the Diamond League series to suggest he can pull out an even bigger jump on the big stage next month. Although he had been hitting eight metres and over since 2006, Lapierre really only came to prominence at the 2009 World Championships where he finished fourth and then at the 2010 World Indoor Championships, he took gold beating the World Champion at the time. He went on to claim gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India before his hamstrings would become a constant worry for several years.

Lapierre pushed through hamstring concerns at last year’s World Championships in Beijing to earn silver which he also achieved at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year to show he was on target for the Rio Games. Fab, as he is known, now claims he is in the form of his life and hopes everything comes together for a monster jump at the Olympics. “I’ve been racking up the podiums and if I keep doing that, then going to Rio with the big stage, the momentum and the adrenaline, anything can happen,” Lapierre has said. Lapierre, who moved to the American college system when he was 18, credits his good form and saving his career to working under renown American coach Dan Pfaff in Arizona since 2014. An Olympic medal is the only one missing from his well stocked trophy cabinet but that should all change in Rio – it’s a matter of what colour.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

IT’s a joke A MATE OF MINE has two tickets for the AFL Grand Final.

Super Box seats, accommodation etc., but he didn’t realise when he bought them that it was going to be on the same day as his wedding – so he can’t go. If you’re interested and want to go instead of him, it’s at St Peter’s Church in Toorak Rd., Toorak at 3.00pm. Her name’s Sharon.

I USED TO THINK maths was useless, but then one day I realised that decimals had a point.

18. Who was Edwin Flack? 19. Which nation has never won an Olympic gold medal for men’s football Brazil, Italy, France or Spain?

FIVE POINT EXTRA 20. Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon doubles titles with three different partners. Name them.

JUDGMENT DAY. 0–10 POINTS You are a sporting dunce. 11–20 A lot more work needed. 21–30 A strong showing. 31–40 A real bright spark. 41–45 Bordering on genius. 46 OR MORE You are a sporting guru.

ONE-POINTERS: 1 - 40. 2 - Scott Watters. 3 - Anna Meares. 4 Brisbane. 5 - Josep Gombau. TWO-POINTERS: 6 – Simon Gerrans. 7 - Ten. 8 – Sweden’s Henrik Stenson. 9 - 2000. 10 - Nick Riewoldt. THREE-POINTERS: 11 - Jack Dyer. 12 - Huddersfield (on loan from Manchester City). 13 - Hockey. 14 - Lauren Jackson. 15 - Golden State Warriors. FOUR-POINTERS: 16 - The names of holes at Royal Troon Golf Club which hosted this year’s British Open. 17 - Rio de Janeiro. 18 Australia’s first Olympian (in 1896). 19 - Brazil. FIVE-POINTER: 20 - Chris Evert, Billie Jean King and Pam Shriver.

Lapierre has been quickly improving his jumping distance in the lead up to Rio and is right in the mix for the medals while his best leap could see him snare gold.

He missed the 2012 London Olympics and the 2013 World Championships but he showed he was nearing his best again at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where he finished just outside the medals.

?

P

robably Australia’s best hope of a gold medal in the track and field lies with long jumper Fabrice Lapierre.
