he weight of expectation appears to be a heavy burden to bear for several clubs at present.

an effort to achieve that elusive flag. But we now realise, that they don’t have the class of player for such a style of play.

There were high hopes during the preseason that Fremantle and Port Adelaide would be premiership threats while Collingwood and Richmond were ready to mount a challenge for success in 2016.

Fremantle needs to take a step back and rebuild a squad that can reward the club with a premiership which may take another three to four years to come to fruition.

After just four rounds though, those clubs aren’t meeting the hype placed on them. They are each struggling for different reasons to match off-field desires with on-field realities, but a lot can be said about their mental frailties. Now in this position, it is even harder to turn their fortunes around and the focus on them increases every week. While many inside the Dockers walls believed the club was still within their premiership window, most outside anticipated a drop-off this season. However, few saw such a dramatic fall from grace. Coach Ross Lyon needed to adjust their dour defensive game plan and create more goal-scoring opportunities in

Most experts believed last year was just a blip in the Powers’ drive to success and that they would be contenders again. Unfortunately they still seem well away from accomplishing their goals. Port Adelaide’s demise has more troubling connotations due to this group showing it has the ability to compete against the top sides in the competition. Players obviously thought it would just happen again this season. The club though was shaken by its loss of Patrick Ryder and Angus Monfries by the Essendon saga which has now affected its forward and rucking structures. No club would want to hear commentators say that their opposition would have trained harder than they are being made to play against them.

THUMBS UP

Australian teenager Minjee Lee has reeled in a five-shot deficit to win her second LPGA Tour title last weekend. The 19 year-old played a seven-hole stretch in 6-under with a chip-in eagle on the par-5 13th and four birdies to rebound from a third-round 74 and finish at 16-under, one shot ahead of South Korea’s Chun In-gee and overnight leader Katie Burnettto claim the Lotte Championship in Hawaii. “Yesterday I spoke to my coach and he said ‘You’re only five back, just shoot eight under and you’ll be fine,” she said. “I just did all I could do and here I am.” Lee won her first tournament almost a year ago in May, taking out the Kingsmill Championship and has now become only the fifth player in LPGA Tour history to capture multiple victories before her 20th birthday.

Port Adelaide is 2-2 so all is not lost just yet but the players’ mindset must improve quickly. On the other hand, what do we say about Collingwood and Richmond? It was seen as a year where the Magpies would move back up the ladder with a stronger squad of which coach Nathan Buckley has finally been able to put his own stamp on. Maybe we were expecting too much too early but at the moment they are far from a finals outfit. They are young though so they probably still need a few more years to develop. Then there is Richmond. Strangely, what we are seeing from the Tigers is just what we have come to expect. It’s just disappointing for their legion of fans that are promised so much but given so little. Every club must face up to expectations though, from within and out. How they handle them determines their success with some just always coping with them better. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

As was the case with the men in the Davis Cup, our women’s Fed Cup has failed to overcome the United States, without world number one Serena Williams, in their qualifying tie for the World Group. The Australian team was looking the strongest it had been in a long time when Russian import Daria Gavrilova was declared eligible to team up with Sam Stosur in the singles, leading to much promise of overall success in the Fed Cup. However, the world number 37 was unable to match her world number 22 American opponent Madison Keys in the opening encounter but of most disappointment was Australian number one and world number 26 Stosur who could not measure up against lower ranked opponents on both days of competition resulting in Australia losing the tie.

Reward for effort W

e are sure to see a different Port Adelaide this week.

The performances displayed against both the Crows and more critically the Giants last week have not been what we have come to expect from the Power. The heat put on the club this week will ensure a greater effort from the players against Geelong at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. If not only for the fact that the Port Adelaide hierarchy places so much importance on this Anzac round home fixture. However, why must they be continually responding from bad performances? It is unanswerable really why it played so badly last week in a contest that could have springboarded their season to promised heights but it was as if it didn’t even turn up and then frustration ensued. Coach Ken Hinkley admits his side was embarrassing last weekend which he is at least being honest about. Surely within the club confines he is chastising the players for their lack of effort. His role in preparation for the Cats on Saturday night will be to re-ignite the spark and encourage more spirit from his players whose confidence would have been severely dented from the Giants’ result. They have the ability to reverse it quickly but the question will be, do they mentally? Geelong will be tough opposition and will punish any lapses this week. Hinkley has indicated changes will be made with underperforming players facing the chop but he doesn’t have a lot of options to go to, particularly with the Magpies’ outfit in the SANFL having a bye last week. Big recruit Charlie Dixon is struggling as the lone target and needs assistance which must see troublesome forward John Butcher come to present a two-pronged attack. Young ruck Dougal Howard can offer struggling Matthew Lobbe some relief while hard running Sam Colquhoun and defender Cam O’Shea are the next in line for senior selection. Other than that the issue for Port Adelaide is its lack of depth with several youngsters still a way off AFL debuts. Therefore Hinkley must rally a response from those who took the field in Canberra last week. This will require a greater lift from the leadership group in particular. Captain Travis Boak must inspire his teammates.

He has been down on his usual output in recent weeks which may be due to injury but he still needs to show more intent.

Midfielder Hamish Hartlett was returning from a hamstring strain against the Giants and was probably trying to find his feet again but he too as a leader must attack the contest stronger this week. Justin Westhoff is wasted as the floater around the ground and he too needs to be a presence in attack for his side to be a force again. Jackson Trengove seems to be lacking belief in himself being the number one defender so he also requires more help from those around him. It is all about reward for effort this week – the more they put in, the more they will get back. No such worries across town at West Lakes as

Footy footnotes Well, we didn’t expect such contrasting differences in our two local AFL clubs at the beginning of the season. The Crows run hot but the Power’s standards drop while around the league. • The annual criticism of only Collingwood and Essendon taking centre stage on Anzac day is duly justified this season, particularly considering their current predicament, more interest even in Victoria is on the Friday night blockbuster between Hawthorn and Adelaide but image if it was a grand final replay on Monday • Talking of Anzac day clashes disappointing that the South Australian public will not get coverage of our own SANFL grand final replay on Monday – Channel Seven may say it’s promoting the local game but we only seem to see the two AFL reserves side play • The Power could do with this bloke in their line-up at present – Matthew Carnellay, who plays for Forest Hill in Victoria’s Eastern Football League, kicked 25.3 in his side’s record breaking 54.26 which was the EFL’s highest score since 1971 • The Western Bulldogs cheer squad continues to lead the way with its creative banners – last week’s against the Blues read “It’s a night game that explains the mid strength Carlton!” – previously we’ve seen “Sorry ‘bout this Brisbane, it’s a pretty harsh whack, but your logo looks a lot like, the bloke from Nickelback.”, “Time to make Osso Bucco out of the Shinboners.”, “Our banners are poetic. 3 SPORTSBEAT // 21 APRIL 2016 Adelaide prepares for another big clash against Hawthorn on Friday night. The Crows overcame Sydney in a cracking contest last week but this will be a bigger test again which will really show their credentials for 2016 success. The Hawks convincingly knocked them out of last year’s finals race and have proven to be a major hurdle in the past. Adelaide’s current game plan is capable of troubling the reigning premier which isn’t travelling at its best at the moment. But Hawthorn will look to respond from last week’s disappointing performance against St Kilda in which coach Alastair Clarkson even said the better team lost. Rising star Wayne Milera will miss due to a quad injury which opens the door for similar type Charlie Cameron to return for Friday night’s showcase at the ‘G’. Is there a chance of sending over your face mask to wear?” – McKenzie has had no luck so far • While Port Adelaide has made remarkable financial inroads into China, we now hear that Carlton is also looking onto the lucrative Asian marketplace with businessmen from Singapore at Ikon Park last week discussing possible sponsorship deals and a game in Singapore • No more drawn grand finals is another loss for real footy fans who actually got the chance to go to a replay – how many times has the AFL / VFL had to worry about it anyway? AFL PREVIEW ROUND 5

BY DION HAYMAN

HAWTHORN V ADELAIDE

WESTERN BULLDOGS V BRISBANE

Patrick Dangerfield’s 154th and final game as a Crow was as Adelaide bowed out of the 2015 finals race with a 74-point defeat in the second semi-final against Hawthorn at the MCG. The Hawks opened with 8.4 to 2.2 and the Crows never recovered. It was Hawthorn’s club record sixth straight win over the Crows. Adelaide last beat Hawthorn in the opening round of 2011 when Taylor Walker booted four goals in what was his 33rd match. The game was also Brodie Smith’s debut. Despite their much vaunted forward line, the Crows have not surpassed 92 points in their six defeats against the Hawks. Hawthorn has not kicked less than 89 points in any of those games too. Both sides have now won 18 games from their 36 clashes. The Hawks lead 5-3 though at the MCG.

The Western Bulldogs were caught in a shoot-out they failed to win when they last met Brisbane in the final minor round game last season at the Gabba. The Lions trailed 8.0 to 2.5 at quarter-time but recovered to win 19.16 (130) to 19.8 (122) with four goals apiece from Josh Green and Jed Adcock (now a Bulldog) whose haul of 4.2 was a career high in his 206th and final game for the club. The loss didn’t alter the Bulldogs’ final ladder position but may have dented their confidence as they bowed out the following week in the elimination final against the Crows. Curiously, the Lions have five wins from their last seven games against the Bulldogs. However, the Bulldogs have won four of the last six at Docklands since 2010 and lead there 6-5 since 2000.

Sydney finally brings West Coast back to the SCG after five consecutive matches at Subiaco since 2011. The Eagles won their most recent clash, in round 17 last year in Perth, by 52 points, 15.13 (103) to 7.9 (51). That was after the Eagles led 8.5 to 1.6 at half-time. Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling both finished with three goals for the Eagles. The win brought to an end Sydney’s club record run of seven straight wins in this fixture and was the Eagles’ first against the Swans since 2007. The Eagles’ last trip to the SCG delivered a 52-point defeat in 2010. Incredibly, they haven’t won at the ground since 1999 but have played there only five times in the 16 seasons since. Sydney leads overall 26 wins to 20.

Patrick Dangerfield returns to Adelaide - not to face the Crows but the Power at the Oval. The Cats have won 11 of their last 12 games against Port. Their only blemish was a 40-point defeat at Adelaide Oval in 2014. But the Cats restored order last year at the same ground when they won by 23 points, 14.8 (92) to 11.3 (69). Port led by a point at quarter-time but lost ground every quarter thereafter. Chad Wingard finished with four goals. It was one of only five games last year that Shane Kersten and Rhys Stanley played together and the pair both delivered two goals in the win. Geelong now leads overall 19 wins to nine with one draw after its 10 straight wins from 2007-13. Port though still leads eight wins to six in Adelaide.

GOLD COAST V NORTH MELBOURNE

Early season bolters Gold Coast and North Melbourne meet for just the seventh time. North won their first three matches by 59, 34 and seven points while the Suns have won their last three matches by 15, 43 and 55 points. This represents an improvement in the result by the Suns in every single meeting by an average of 23 points per match! This will be their fifth meeting on the Gold Coast with the ledger square at two wins apiece. The sides met just once last year with Gold Coast winning at Carrara, 19.11 (125) to 10.10 (70). Charlie Dixon was the star booting a career-high 7.2 from 11 kicks and five marks. Gary Ablett has also dined out on the Roos, scoring 13 goals and averaging 33 possessions in his last four games against them.

GWS has won its last two games against St Kilda after dropping the first three and like the Suns-Kangaroos match-up, the Giants have improved their result in each match. The Saints won their first three clashes by 128, 72 and seven points but the Giants broke through in round one last year at Docklands for a nine-point win. Jeremy Cameron scored four goals as the Giants led at every change. They stretched their advantage to 35 points at the Sydney Showgrounds in round 15 with another five goals from Cameron. The Giants opened with 4.3 to 0.5 in the first quarter and were never headed. This game is back at Docklands where the Saints lead two wins to one.

Melbourne has stunned Richmond with two wins from their last two battles. The Dees won by 17 points in 2014 and backed up for a 32-point win last year after leading by just two points at half-time. In 13 games against Melbourne, Jack Riewoldt has been well off-target, kicking 16.33. Yet against GWS he has 18.2 and against Port, 39.12. Riewoldt went goalless last year against the Dees scoring just 0.4. Melbourne hasn’t won three games in a row against Richmond since 2010-11. The original MCG co-tenants have now met 132 times at the ground with the Tigers leading 69 wins to 62 with a draw in 1953. Despite its recent success, Melbourne hasn’t kicked more than 91 points against Richmond since 2011.

With both sides winless so far, Carlton will head west for its third consecutive game and sixth match from its last seven against the Dockers in Perth. Fremantle has won their last three tangles by 36, five and 42 points. Their only match last year was in round 16 when the Dockers won 13.17 (95) to 8.5 (53) when the Blues were held scoreless in the final term. Chris Mayne topped the goals with four. Carlton last beat Fremantle in Perth in 2012 by eight points and also won the previous year at the same ground by 30 points. However, the Blues have only five wins to show from their 16 matches against the Dockers at Subiaco. Fremantle leads the head-to-head 17 wins to 12. Six of the last 10 games between these sides have been decided by between five and nine points.

Collingwood and Essendon are potentially facing their worst seasons together since the birth of their Anzac Day battles in 1995 dawned with a classic draw. In 2005, the two sides shared just 13 wins for the season. Essendon finished 13th with an 8-14 record while Collingwood was 15th with a 5-17 result. Both sides limped into that Anzac Day battle with just one win apiece. The Bombers sat on the bottom of the ladder but led at every change to beat the Pies by 14 points. Travis Cloke is the only survivor from that match. The Bombers have won two of their last three games against Collingwood including a three-point win in the final round last season when Heath Hocking kicked the winner at the 27-minute mark. Since 1995, Collingwood leads the Anzac clashes with 12 wins to eight and that one draw. Crow Paul Seedsman won last year’s Anzac Medal. James Hird is the only man to have won three medals. Sav Rocca, Scott Pendlebury and Dane Swan have both won two.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 5

BY CHRIS KENDALL

NORWOOD V STURT

GLENELG V ADELAIDE

Fourth hosting third in the eastern derby, both coming off winning form in contrasting styles. Norwood took all night to shake off a determined Glenelg, but was able to nail the opportunities when they counted. In contrast, Sturt was in control all day against West led by the onball brigade of Zane Kirkwood and James Battersby, with strong cameos from Matthew Crocker and Brodie Martin. The precision of ball movement by the Double Blues over the past two games has been impressive with their spread to space and ability to find the loose teammate a key to penetrating a multi-dimensional attack. This throws a big challenge to Norwood which can be a little stagnant at times moving from its defensive half. If it can get it quickly to the likes of Lewis Johnston it will still need to navigate a highly underrated Sturt defence working strongly to shut down the opposition. Just leaning to the visitors in the upset here.

Despite only one win from its opening three matches, Glenelg has emerged as the early surprise packet. It certainly had chances last week against Norwood, but a couple of undisciplined acts late opened the door to the Redlegs. The bye will freshen the undefeated Adelaide Reserves even further after a blistering start to 2016 that has sent a strong message to the rest of the competition. There is no question that the Tigers are making progress under coach Matthew Lokan with a mixture of new faces and experienced heads executing and enterprising and attacking game plan well. Adelaide, however, is moving the ball quicker and with more precision than nearly any other team at present. With very few injuries at AFL level it is causing problems for opposition that allow it 20 minutes of latitude. It will be a good indicator of where Glenelg is at the moment. But most signs point to Adelaide,.

PORT MAGPIES V CENTRAL DISTRICT

WEST ADELAIDE V EAGLES

Sunday 2.10pm, Alberton Life FM

The Bulldogs are staring down the face of a third consecutive defeat after falling to Sturt and South, despite having plenty of the ball in both matches. They are generating enough drive through the middle but have been a little haphazard in attack at times, presenting opportunities to opposition defences. Port’s start to the season has also been slow, and there will be some concerns about losing players upwards as the AFL arm struggles. The likes of Justin Hoskin and Luke Barmby loom as real keys, particularly with the former’s ability to break away from the stoppages and finish on the scoreboard. The Magpies are not generally known for tagging, preferring to set their own impetus although this will be stymied slightly with the loss of Kane Mitchell through suspension. Neither team can afford too many more losses early in the season if finals are in the equation. But there looks a more settled selection table at Elizabeth this week.

TIP: Central District 1-12

Monday 1.10pm, Adelaide Oval Live stream SANFL App and www.sanfl.com.au

The premiership hangover is close to terminal at Richmond after a fourth successive defeat condemned West to the cellar. Averaging less than 10 goals a game while conceding more than 20, West seems to be lacking purpose and endeavour at present. The Eagles are also prone to concentration lapses but have still squared the ledger to sit 2-2. While West was better in the second half last week – winning its first quarter of the season – it still seems miles away from the same cohesive and hungry group from 2015. It is difficult to pinpoint why. The Eagles, however, are allowing the opposition back into matches by switching off for 20 minute bursts and are having to draw upon their best to wrestle the advantage back. The last time these sides met was last year’s Grand Final. But while I expect the margin to be roughly the same, the result should be reversed.

Reds ready to strike

W

ell rested, Adelaide United’s time to shine has come.

The Reds sat back and watched last weekend to see Melbourne City become their semi-final opponent on Friday night at Coopers Stadium. It was the side they beat just two weeks ago in Melbourne to gain the Premiers Plate but this game becomes more important now and will be even tougher. Adelaide United must advance to the season decider next Sunday to give itself a chance to claim its first A-League title at Adelaide Oval. Reds striker Bruce Djite knows opportunities like this don’t come around too often. “I remember playing in a grand final (in 2007) and we lost 6-nil (to Melbourne Victory) and I was 19 at the time and I just thought ‘oh well, I’ll play in one next year or the year after’.” he said. “It doesn’t bear on you as much when you’re younger because you’ve got a long career in front of you and you expect the occasion to come up again. “As a more experienced player, I realise now that these opportunities are few and far between and I think that can help in these games. “There’s a few of us who have been here for quite a while now and you know it’s a big occasion for us. “The experience, the understanding of the magnitude of the game, I think we’ve got enough players in the change room who have very good experience in these big occasions.” Despite beating Melbourne City two weeks ago, the United players will be aware that their opponents have won on two previous trips to Adelaide. The Reds were extremely vigilant defensively in their last encounter against Melbourne City to keep a clean sheet and they will need to be so again to earn a grand final berth. More likely than not, they will have to create scoring opportunities from general play as well.

Reds midfielder Isaias competes with City playmaker Aaron Mooy for the ball two weeks ago with both being key players for their sides again on Friday night. Photo: AAP In their 2-0 victory two weeks ago, both goals were scored from spot kicks – a classic free kick outside the box from Isaias and a converted penalty from Djite. City was uncharacteristically sluggish on that occasion and struggled to generate any scoring power of its own. But they responded strongly last week to defeat Perth Glory 2-0 with both goals coming from gifted Uruguayan Bruno Fornaroli. They have a star-studded line-up including Socceroo playmaker Aaron Mooy, fellow Australian teammate Alex Wilkinson, late season signing Anthony Caceras, on loan from Manchester City, and resolute skipper Patrick Kisnorbo along with Fornaroli which will force Adelaide to be on its game. It looms as a race against time for Socceroo defender Ivan Franjic to be available for City, after withdrawing from last week’s game with a hamstring injury, while a bonus for the Reds will be Harry Novillo’s absence through suspension. Rebounding defender Tarek Elrich could return to the Adelaide line-up. Djite is looking forward to a United front on Friday night to withstand an expected Melbourne City assault. “We’re looking forward to the clash and it’s a special game for everyone involved with the club,” he said.

“Every opposition’s a rival, aren’t they? So we’ll approach (Melbourne City) like we approach any other team. “For us as players, we’ll give City the same respect that we would show anyone else and we’ll back ourselves against them like we back ourselves against anyone else. “If we concentrate on our jobs on the pitch, we’ll make a lot of people proud on Friday night.” Reds captain Eugene Galekovic said the side had already moved on from receiving the Premiers Plate for finishing atop the A-League ladder at the end of the minor round and is only thinking about beating City this week. “The week off has enabled us to manage our bodies quite well and this week will be all about how we’re going to play against Melbourne City,” he said. “We’ve learned a lot from just playing them in our last game so we kind of know how they play, but it’s about preparing for it and making sure that we’re ready to fight through the 90 minutes on Friday night. “We’re playing at Coopers and we want to perform in front of our crowd. “It’s going to be a big game and it’s all about getting the job done.” BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

lights on Friday night at University Oval. The Blacks had a tough contest last week going down to Prince Alfred OC. The Reds look set to be in for an Anzac Day classic against Salisbury North on Monday.

The Gullies have set the standard early with an authoritative 52-point victory over a talented Rostrevor OC outfit.

The first-round winners will both be trying to impose themselves on the competition early.

Forward Trent Melville took advantage of the numerous opportunities presented, kicking 11 goals while Jonathan Birkin and Dylan Schoenmakers added their skills to an ominous attacking set-up.

The smaller oval of Largs Reserve allowed the Hawks to restrict Port District’s run last week and achieve an unassailable 33-point victory. However, the wide open expanses of Salisbury North Oval should encourage a more entertaining contest of fluent running football with plenty of space to attack this week.

Their attributes are sure to be on display again when Port District ventures to Pertaringa Oval. The Magpies are coming off a loss last week.

The side that best limits their opponents’ freedom will no doubt prevail.

It is a tough start for ROCs in the opening weeks of the season as they face reigning premier Goodwood Saints on Saturday. The Saints saw that the elevated Unley Mercedes Jets will be competitive in Division 1 but still took the points in round one. Stalwarts Nick Burgess, Tom Anderson and Anthony Dempsey ensured Goodwood began it title defence brightly. It continues to be a baptism of fire though for the Jets who must now face the other 2015 grand finalist Payneham Norwood Union second up.

Port District will need to have a strong grip on Tea Tree Gully to cause an upset on Saturday. Photo: Jayson Vowles even with a patchy third term, to win by 21 points.

O

ld Ignatians established a sizeable percentage on the opening weekend of its season which it will be keen to build on now to remain the frontrunner of Division 2. Following its big round one win over Portland by 75 points, it can add further heartache to Sacred Heart OC this week. Old Iggies coach Jeremy Cini would have been pleased with his side’s start to the season, especially Will Abbott and Dylan McNeil. A similar performance on Saturday will further highlight their potential for a successful 2016. SHOC found Gaza too strong first up. The Eagles will be a ruthless contender throughout the season as revealed by their solid 43-point victory. Chris Radetti and Trent Hill were damaging around the packs and their pace through the middle will be hard for opposition sides to

contain over the course of the year. Gaza receives a visit this week from St Peters OC which accounted for PHOS Camden in a close battle. Just one goal separated the two sides at the finish, which saw Michael Mittiga and James Duncan as the standouts for SPOC. They will need to be ready for a tougher encounter again on Saturday. The Phantoms will host Modbury this week in an effort to put a win on the board. It should be an engrossing match-up with the home side more than capable against any side on it day. After a solid opening home win over Scotch OC by 32 points, the Hawks must show they can compete well away from Modbury if they are to be a genuine fancy this season. Scotch OC faces Division newcomer SMOSH West Lakes. The Lions were first round losers to Broadview

but made their opponents fight for their victory. They will be hoping to achieve their first success at this level on Saturday at home. The Tigers found SMOSH West Lakes testing material in the first half of their clash but ran away with a tricky 24-point triumph. Having a spearhead in attack was the difference for Modbury with Jacob Fisher kicking six goals and Brad Sheridan a key play maker for his side. Demons, Bulls set for tough battle E

astern Park and Pooraka look set for a tight tussle when they meet this week at Dwight Reserve. The Demons found Salisbury too strong, going down away by 34 points with Ricky Butler again starring with good games from Jaron Burke and Paul Jones. Shawn Mansell kicked three goals. Pooraka did enough to keep its nose in front to beat Kenilworth at home by nine points with Stewart Tremain, Bradley Batten and Jonathan Lewis among the best. Chris Adams kicked five goals. Home ground means a lot to the Demons which should see victory between 18-30 points. Edwardstown and Salisbury also looks a beauty at Edwardstown. Towns have had a tough initiation back into the amateur league

competition, last week just holding out North Haven by six points away after leading by 23 points at the last change. Nick Somers, Brinley Duggan and Sam Elliott were fine players, while Colby Blyth kicked four goals. Salisbury is flying on top with three wins, last week beating Eastern Park by 38 points. Brad Horjus (six goals), Alex Jolly and Adam Atkinson led the way. In possibly the clubs’ first meeting at senior level the Magpies could swoop by 12-26 points. Colonel Light Gardens and North Haven meet at Mortlock Park in yet another ripper game. The Lions had the bye last week but had won their two previous games. North Haven flashed home to just miss against Edwardstown by six points last week with

Mark Cocchiaro, Ty Duerden and Brett Pedersen standing tall, while Cohen Mattner kicked four goals for the Magpies. The Lions can roar again by 16-28 points. Kenilworth and Westminster Old Scholars are reasonably close geographically. But there won’t be many pleasantries at St Marys Park this week. Kenilworth battled strongly to go down to Pooraka last week with Nicholas Chesser, Andrew Liverton and Henry Moss among the best. Westminster OS is gathering steam with two wins, last week accounting for Hope Valley by 68 points, Thomas Easton, Matthew Reid (three goals) and Scott Blesing among the leaders. osewater is showing it will be around the mark this season.

It pushed an imposing outfit in Smithfield in round one but has found its feet quickly since to follow up with two handy victories, especially a solid performance last week, beating Greenacres by 20 points. The Bulldogs got on top early before the Dragons began to fight back midway through the second term but the home side always seemed to have the game in its control. Greg Scott and Jake Williams were Rosewater’s best. The Dogs will be barking this week when the Bulldogs face the Hounds away at Daly Oval.

Hectorville scraped in last week to defeat Elizabeth by just three points, kicking 4.14 to 5.5. Coach Phil Neagle will no doubt be stressing this week that improved accuracy will be required for his side to be a finals challenger but would have been happy with the effort put in, particularly from Daniel Francis and Shaun

Roche, to achieve the result.

not many sides can say they have managed.

The Eagles are at Glenunga this week with both sides looking for their first win of the year.

Coming up against the Panthers after a loss is a difficult ordeal on any occasion so CBCOC must be ready for them on Saturday or face the consequences.

The Rams tested premiership favourite Blackfriars OS last week but didn’t have the firepower to restrict the likes of Matthew Brincat and Michael Iuliano for the whole game A win isn’t far off though. However, the college Hounds will have to step it up further for the top-of-the-table clash against Lockleys on Saturday. Rising up from Division 6 hasn’t proven any problems for the Demons which remain strong at this level. Tommy-Lee Russo and Jaseton Heath along with fellow teammates are showing they have the capabilities of being successful in Division 5 as well. They invoked some vengeance on their 2015 grand final combatants last week, beating Smithfield by 48 points at its home base which

Jack Strange and Jack Owens would have celebrated the Dolphins’ sound 24-point victory over college rival Pulteney last week but must prepare for even stronger opposition this week. rahma Lodge and Fitzroy are primed to see who rules the jungle when the Tigers and Lions meet at Brahma Lodge. The Tigers finished over the top of Houghton Districts last week to win by 35 points after trailing by six points at half time. David Savage, Dene Steele and Shane Cosenza were best for the Tigers. Fitzroy was too strong for Mitchell Park by 28 points as Aaron Asfaha, Darryl Cotter (six goals) and Matthew Nelson starred. The Tigers by 32-44 points. Adelaide Lutheran and Mawson Lakes clash at South Parklands with Lutheran aiming to win its first game and the Saints looking to add to their one win. Shane Hickey was best for the Bulldogs in their big loss to West Croydon, while Andy Carr led the way for Mawson Lakes in its 14-point loss to West Croydon. Mawson Lakes to get the nod by 12-26 points. Ingle Farm and West Croydon at Rowe Park looks an early-season blockbuster with both sides unbeaten. The Bulldogs edged out Trinity Old Scholars by six points last week

with Daniel Bryant best. West Croydon crushed Adelaide Lutheran by 89 points at home as Eddie Wilson led a star line up. A beauty with the Hawks tipped by 16-26 points. Another cracker game has Woodville South hosting Houghton Districts with both sides on two wins. Sam Giatrakos played well for the Cats in their win against Mawson Lakes, while Jai McMurtrie was excellent for the Raiders. The Cats can pounce again by 18-30 points. Reds start strong

P

rince Alfred OC has started the season strongly and looks a real threat already at this early stage of the season.

Despite giving Adelaide University a slight sniff in the second quarter of their game last week, the Reds regained ascendancy after the main break to take the contest out of their opponent’s hands. A scrappy last quarter ensued but they refused to allow the Blacks any run which resulted in a goalless term by both sides. Henry Basedow, Michael Phillips and William Latchford will be out to maintain their side’s unbeaten run in Division 7 when they welcome North Pines to Park 9 on Saturday. As with their Division 1 counterparts, Unley Mercedes Jets and Payneham Norwood Union meet this week. The Jets will host this encounter and should win. Unley Mercedes Jets have won their three games so far while the Falcons are yet to win. John Wauchope, Ross Pickering and Michael Bellifimini are part of an intimidating unit at the Jets and already along with Prince Alfred OC and Salisbury West appear to have the

competition to themselves. Central United opened its 2016 winning account last week with an efficient 47-point victory over Payneham Norwood Union. Other than the top three, it looks a tight tussle for the remaining finals berth at this level. The Bulldogs will need to add wins against those competing sides to make it their own so they will be hoping that James Daley, James Bain and Troy Clausen can spur the team on again when Adelaide University visits on Saturday. Flinders University is a similar position and, after a week off, will be keen to get back into things. Coming off a loss to the Jets, St Pauls OS will play the Crabs in another of those crucial clash for both sides. Salisbury West, a 75-point victor over North Pines last week, has a bye this week. The well-travelled trainer passed away last week after a lengthy battle with an infection. His loss will be felt throughout the industry as Whittle was one of those larger-than-life characters who always had a story to tell and was always there to lend a helping hand. A terrific supporter of apprentice jockeys and strugglers, Mick was one of the few trainers that was always willing to give a rider a chance at redemption and so many times that confidence translated into winners. So many winners that he boasted the impressive claim of being the only trainer to have trained a winner in every State/Territory in Australia and hoisted every country cup on South Australia’s list. As a result, the Whittle name was synonymous with country racing but his greatest triumph came with the horse he affectionately named ‘Romey’ who was known to the

IT’s a joke

punters as Roman Arch. Despite the knockers, Whittle entered ‘Romey’ in the 2003 Group One Toorak Handicap at Caulfield as a $21 chance and when the gamble paid off with Roman Arch beating the likes of Fields of Omagh and Umrum, the ever upfront and confident larrikin said, “It should teach the bloke who said he’d been up too long to keep his mouth shut.” That quote in so many ways sums up the character that was Mick Whittle. Someone who always met life head on, someone who never shied away from a challenge and a true horseman who knew the quality of the horses he trained, just like with ‘Romey’ defying the critics who had suggested that Roman Arch had been up too long but Whittle knew better. Whittle’s legacy as a quick witted, tough, true horseman will never be filled. But his name will continue in racing with his son Scott training in his own right and is a chip off the old block. AN OLD AUSTRALIAN BATTLER lies dying in his bed. He calls over his faithful wife of 60 years and says, “Shirl, when we started out, tried to buy a business in the depression, went bust, you were with me.” “Oh yes, Bruce,” she said. “Then the war started, I joined up, and was sent to the front line, where I lost me legs. You stayed with me,” he added. “Oh yes, Bruce,” she said. “I come home, couldn’t get a job, due to me disability, so we bought a farm,” he continued. “Oh yes, Bruce,” she said. “The farm flooded, then just when we got over that, there was a bushfire, and then the drought, which wiped us right out but you still stayed with me.” “Oh yes, Bruce,” “Now here I am, in excruciating pain, about to die, and you’re still with me.” “Yes Bruce” “Shirl” “Yes, Bruce?” “You’re bloody bad luck.”
