remantle’s quick demise from premiership threat to cellar dweller has been the biggest surprise of season 2016 so far. Many had expected perhaps a slight drop-off from the Dockers’ table-topping efforts last year but not to the extent of being winless after eight rounds this year. Key injuries have been a curse to the Western Australian outfit with the likes of Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe suffering a repeat to his broken leg from the end of last season, new star recruit Harley Bennell unable to hit the park yet, ruckman Aaron Sandilands floored by a punctured lung and fractured ribs, and defender Michael Johnson succumbing to a knee and hamstring complaint to name a few. Last week veteran Matthew Pavlich was rested from the side’s clash with Hawthorn in Launceston and senior players Michael Barlow and Zac Dawson were omitted as Lyon continue to promote youngsters.

However, while the word ‘tanking’ is not being used, it would

bemuse some that it is okay for it to describe the rest of the season as “list management”. The Dockers hierarchy is certainly coy not to give any suggestion that ‘tanking’ is taking place. But CEO Steve Rosich has said the club’s stunning capitulation had led to a “new focus” and created “new opportunities” looking ahead to 2017. Rosich acknowledged he had received no warnings from the AFL regarding Fremantle’s “management” of players. “Ross (Lyon), Chris Bond and myself meet each week and there was a point recently we did start to look further ahead than a week-to-week sense, with more of a whole season perspective,” he said. “Obviously we’ll have access to better draft picks, earlier choices than we normally do and, having Ross committed for five years, allows us to plan long-term and plan around him. “I saw Gillon McLachlan and Mark Evans at the CEOs meeting last week and we had no

conversations around that.”

This sounds like a similar discussion held by Melbourne officials including coach Dean Bailey and General Manager of Football Operations Chris Connolly behind closed doors in 2009. At the time, only three matches were investigated where Bailey made significant changes to his match line-up at selection or made positional changes on game day. Yes, just three games hung and quartered the Melbourne Football Club back then and in particular Bailey who was suspended from the first 16 rounds of the 2013 season when an assistant at the Adelaide Football Club and Connolly who was suspended for the whole of the 2013 season and subsequently sacked by the Demons. So it’s not ‘tanking’ per se, it’s just known under a different guise as “list management” now. Maybe the league owes Connolly and Bailey (his family) apologies for their treatment received from the AFL. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Australian golfer and world number one Jason Day would have been worthy of earning another mention here after his win in the so-called ‘fifth major’ the Players Championship last week but he has received plenty of accolades in the Thumbs Up post.

Only Jarryd Hayne knows the real reason for his surprise early retirement from the NFL this week but it still seems a strange one when on the verge of real stardom and giving up possible millions.

This week we award it to the youngest winning Formula One driver Max Verstappen following his maiden triumph in the Spanish Grand Prix last weekend. The 18 year-old Dutchman only just rose to the senior Red Bull team at the expense of Daniil Kvyat who was forced back to its development Toro Rosso outfit after the Russian Grand Prix just two weeks ago. Misfortune with a tyre puncture on the penultimate lap and team strategy prevented Verstappen’s Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo from achieving success himself, petering out to fourth.

Maybe he knew something that many of us don’t – that being a potential cut from the San Francisco 49ers but even that is hard to believe considering their lack of running back strength in the squad at present. Perhaps we should just take him for his word that the lure of playing rugby sevens for his father’s natural country Fiji at the Rio Olympics was too strong to forgo. However, some experts suggest his chances of making one of the 12 hotly contested spots on the island’s flamboyant and medal favourite team are slim so we’ll probably be more likely to see him back in the NRL next year.

Missing in action A

t times of trouble, Port Adelaide leaders have been missing in action which has been a major issue in the club’s failings so far this season. In particular last week when a top-eight spot beckoned, the Power let slip an 18-point lead with 10 minutes to go and lost a crucial contest to Carlton by just two points. Skipper Travis Boak, usually the spark that lifts his teammates in these situations, was invisible while the club’s other leaders such as Brad Ebert, Tom Jonas and Jack Hombsch had also limited impacts. It is like they expect someone else will take up the slack and get the side over the line. However, that is the role of this leadership group which must understand its position in the side for it to be successful. All is well when players are playing to the club’s ‘run and carry’ game plan and intensity levels around the contest are high but when the pressure builds from the opposition, they crumble. It is a harsh analysis but last Sunday was a case in point, Port Adelaide should not be losing to the Blues, especially with its experience compared to that of Carlton which was even decimated by key injuries on the day. It begs the question. Has coach Ken Hinkley lost the players? His fortunes this season are mirroring those of Collingwood mentor Nathan Buckley, despite one extra victory to his name, so greater criticism is sure to follow if further improvements are not made. Port Adelaide gets its chance to rectify that this week when it hosts a West Coast outfit that has struggled on the road this season. The Eagles, though, are sure to view this clash as a chance to put right their own deficiencies in this area. The likely return of star Robbie Gray will be a boost for the Power on Saturday afternoon but the club’s leaders still need to offer more. Defender Alipate Carlile is available to cover West Coast’s taller forwards but his mobility around the ground may be a detriment. While the Eagles’ big man strengths look imposing with Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett, it would be risky to subject Dougal Howard to them at this point of his career so Jackson Trengove, Charlie Dixon and Justin Westhoff must restrict their influence. Hinkley is not in a position to make wholesale changes with no-one really presenting in the SANFL other than maybe Sam Colquhoun or

Jesse Palmer for his debut. Adelaide coach Don Pyke, on the other hand, looks set to make a few more changes at the selection table than he has in previous weeks following his side’s performance against Geelong last week. Skill execution was poor last week, the side lucky not to suffer a heavier loss thanks to the Cats’ inaccuracy. Gold Coast comes the right time for the Crows who can attack their clash on Saturday with strong vigour from the outset and control the contest, which should allow better use of ball. Assistant coach David Teague admitted that the coaching staff probably erred dropping Jarryd

Footy footnotes It wasn’t what either of our local fans were hoping for last week, seeing Dangerfield takes the points and the Power forgoing a top-eight spot, but other news from around the league saw: • One question for Dangerfield though – Which State actually does have the best coffee? – he fooled the media last week telling Melbourne journos at the airport that it was going to be a tough 48 hours leaving Victoria because the best coffee in Australia was there and then upon arrival in Adelaide, he told the local media (with a cheeky smirk on his face) that he had missed the Adelaide coffee as you can’t get it as good in Melbourne • Saints ruckman Tom Hickey has learnt plenty from the competition’s premier big men in recent weeks including West Coast’s Nic Naitanui, North Melbourne’s Todd Goldstein, Demon Max Gawn and Giant Shane Mumford, but he won’t be forgetting big Mummy any time soon - “It was a great challenge playing against big Mumford. He would chat almost the entire game, as if he was commentating it. I normally stay pretty quiet but he certainly had a few things to say,” Hickey told Fox Sports. • Helmets appear back in vogue – we saw four players donning the head wear in round eight – Tiger Ben Griffiths, Blue Marc Murphy, Bulldog Caleb Daniel and Swan Ted Richards – it could become the norm soon the current focus on concussion and head injuries • Former Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown is not liking what he sees at his old club, saying he was “embarrassed” to call himself a Lions supporter on Saturday when they were belted by Collingwood – in the past,

One can expect Lyons to come in then which may see a struggling Richard Douglas sent back to regain some touch. While the SANFL contingent did not get the opportunity to stakes their claims last week, Cam Ellis-Yolmen has pushed his credentials forward for a call-up for a number of weeks now and youngster Harrison Wigg may be ready for his first game too. A bold move from Pyke would be to give Scott Thompson a rest this week while he could even consider giving ruckman Reilly O’Brien a chance to share the load with Sam Jacobs who has appeared flat in recent weeks. AFL PREVIEW ROUND 9

BY DION HAYMAN

HAWTHORN V SYDNEY Friday 7.20pm, MCG

Hawthorn and Sydney square off on Friday night at the MCG in what’s likely to offer some real insight into the premiership credentials of both clubs. The Hawks have won six of their last eight games including a massive 89-point victory at Homebush in round 16 last year. The Hawks won that game 23.8 (146) to 7.15 (57), opening with six unanswered goals in the first term and closing with seven to one in the last. Jarryd Roughead kicked five goals and Jack Gunston four while Lance Franklin scored three against his former employers. It was the Hawks’ biggest win over the Swans since 1993. However, in the corresponding fixture last season in round eight at the MCG, Sydney won by just four points, 11.7 (73) to 9.15 (69), holding on after opening with five goals to none in the first term. Hawthorn leads 10-6 at the MCG where the sides didn’t meet for the first time until 2001.

West Coast is winless in its last six games away from Perth, including defeats this year against Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong. Its run includes five losses and a draw on the Gold Coast since beating Collingwood at Docklands in round 16 last year. Earlier in 2015 in round six, West Coast defeated Port at Adelaide Oval by 10 points, 11.12 (78) to 10.8 (68). The Power led by 17 points at half-time but the Eagles wrestled control with 4.4 to 1.0 in the third term. It was the Eagles’ first win against Port in three years after losses at Football Park in 2013 by five points and at Subiaco in 2014 by 14 points. Overall, the Power lead the Eagles 17 wins to 10 and they lead in Adelaide 10 wins to four.

Collingwood has won four of its last six games against Geelong. The sides split their games last season. The Cats won by 41 points in round six at the MCG, 15.10 (100) to 8.11 (59) with three goals to Steven Motlop and Cory Gregson. The Magpies ended the Cats’ finals hopes though in the penultimate round, winning by 48 points, 17.8 (110) to 9.8 (62). Alex Fasolo scored three goals while Daniel Menzel booted four for the losers. These sides have met at the MCG on every occasion since 2005. The Cats have won 10 of those 18 games and lead overall at the ground 24 wins to 20. Collingwood is staring at a third straight season outside the finals – something it has not suffered since missing out in seven straight seasons from 1995-2001.

Carlton has won four of its last seven games against North Melbourne since losing six in a row from 2005-08. However, the Kangaroos won last year’s clash in round 18 at Docklands convincingly by 64 points, 18.10 (118) to 8.6 (54). North led by just 10 points at half-time but kicked 10 goals to two in the second half. Drew Petrie scored three goals and Jarrad Waite two against his old side. This is the earliest these sides have met in the season since 2007. These two teams have met just once every year since then and over the last five years, never before round 16. After 16 games at Docklands, North leads 11 wins to five. The 1999 grand finalists haven’t met at the MCG since 2004 when the Kangaroos won by five points.

The Suns’ narrowest defeat was 28 points at Carrara in 2013 while their biggest loss was at Football Park by 91 points in 2012. The sides met twice last year with similar results. In round six at Carrara, the Crows won by 41 points, 18.11 (119) to 11.12 (78) with five goals from Eddie Betts and four from Taylor Walker. Then in round 17 at Adelaide Oval, the Crows won by 45 points, 19.11 (125) to 12.8 (80) with four goals from Charlie Cameron and three apiece from Betts and Josh Jenkins. The Crows led that game by just nine points at the final change but finished with 8.1 to 2.1. Curiously, the Dockers went into that match unbeaten at 9-0, a polar opposite to the position they find themselves in this season. Richmond went into that game at 5-4. The sides met again in round 17 at the MCG where the Dockers turned the tables to win by four points, 12.10 (82) to 10.18 (78). David Mundy kicked the winning goal at the 27-minute mark after the visitors had trailed narrowly for most of the day. Fremantle leads nine wins to six at Subiaco.

Melbourne ended a five-game losing streak at the hands of Brisbane with a four-goal win in a dour affair in round 16 last year at the MCG. The Demons led by five goals to one at quarter-time but could manage just another three majors for the afternoon, two of them in the second quarter. The Lions had just one goal to half-time and were never really in it, losing by 24 points, 8.12 (60) to 4.12 (36). Jesse Hogan scored four of Melbourne’s eight goals while Jeff Garlett and Tom McDonald scored the other two apiece, leaving the Dees with just three goal-kickers for the day. The Lions had four singles. Brisbane has won just three of 15 games against Melbourne at the MCG.

ST KILDA V ESSENDON

A game that may have looked unfashionable not so long ago takes on greater meaning as GWS hosts the Western Bulldogs at the Sydney Showgrounds. It will be the first meeting between the sides in Sydney. The first three were all played at Canberra’s Manuka Oval and all won by the Bulldogs by 42, four and 27 points. The Giants broke through for their only win in this fixture in 2014 at Docklands. They won by six points in the final round of the season, 18.7 (115) to 15.19 (109) after five goals from Will Hoskin-Elliot. Jake Stringer and Stewart Crameri scored four apiece for the Dogs. But the Bulldogs took their first home win against GWS last season in round nine by 45 points, 16.17 (113) to 11.2 (68). Tory Dickson was the top scorer in the match with four goals.

Essendon and St Kilda’s two meetings last season couldn’t have been much more contrasting. In round five at Docklands, Travis Colyer scored the winner at the 19-minute mark to lead the Bombers to a two-point win, 11.16 (82) to 11.14 (80). However, it was a very different result nine rounds later. Both sides went into the game with four wins – the Bombers just ahead on percentage. Yet St Kilda won by 110 points, 25.12 (162) to 8.4 (52) with five goals from Josh Bruce and four from Nick Riewoldt. It was the Saints’ highest score and biggest win against the Bombers. The Saints have now won three of their last five against Essendon. The Bombers still lead though 12 wins to eight at Docklands.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 9

BY CHRIS KENDALL

NORWOOD V WEST ADELAIDE

PORT MAGPIES V SOUTH ADELAIDE

The teams which have won the past four premierships between them are both struggling to recapture their best form. They will be looking toward this contest as a means of kick-starting the season with Norwood enjoying the bye last week to freshen. West was in the game early against North but faded again over the closing stretch to leave it another week without an entry in the win column for 2016. Norwood has had some great moments this season but is struggling to put four quarters together, particularly with the injury toll continuing to grow in the onball division. West, however, has enough of its own woes, both with confidence and game style. Sustaining effort for four quarters against a team which has largely had its measure over the past few seasons will present even more of a challenge. The home team appears set to return to the winning list.

The unbeaten run for South finally halted after a lacklustre 48 point loss to Sturt that appeared almost inevitable on a smaller ground with some key personnel missing. Lacklustre continues to describe Port’s season, with a 39-point loss to the Eagles almost being a flattering margin. Plenty of personnel rack up big possession numbers, but it masks how well the ball is used through the midfield and when moving into attack. On pure overall form and skill level this season, it is difficult to go past South here. The loss of Daniel Bass in ruck due to suspension will stretch its bigger man stocks, but while Port has plenty of smaller runners, it is not being as damaging with disposal as it could. Finding more consistent attacking options outside of John Butcher is also proving frustrating for coach Chad Cornes, who is finding his introduction to coaching his own team outright a challenge on a few levels. The Panthers seem well placed here to take full advantage.

against an inspired Glenelg outfit that looked far more mentally ready for the contest. Some of Central’s movements into attack were haphazard and lacked composure. These are traits that will be punished by a freshened Adelaide outfit rebounding from the bye after a stunning come-from-behind win against North a fortnight ago. A two-game gap between fourth (Eagles) and fifth (Central) on the ladder makes this contest all the more vital for the Bulldogs if they are aiming to return to finals action, Adelaide does not have a lengthy injury list at AFL level and appears to have the luxury of having some classy onballers at their disposal at SANFL level, which will further test Central on home turf. Some of the Adelaide talls in attack will also stretch the Bulldogs, adding to many factors pointing to an Adelaide victory.

North continues to be the surprise packets of 2016, sitting 3-4 in an immediate improvement on last season and showing far more direction and fight under coach Josh Carr. Then again, the same can be said at Unley where Martin Mattner’s entertaining game plan is being executed well by the Double Blues en route to a 5-1 position. This looms as a real danger game for Sturt. While ladder position and form would normally suggest a strong win for the Double Blues, North has shown a willingness to take on the contest and use its harder running outside brigade to work the ball quickly when allowed levity. Sturt’s restructured attack is reaping dividends, averaging 89 points a game, but North’s average of close to 85 points a game will also give Mattner food for thought. Tempting though it is to pick the upset, Sturt appears to hold the edge.

“Rusty” Mostert eyeing improvement

F

ord driver Chaz Mostert will admit his comeback from a broken leg and wrist hasn’t all been smooth sailing but he believes he is close to “feeling at one” with the car again. The Prodrive Australia driver is still coming to grips with the car over the early rounds of the 2016 Supercars championship, after six months recuperating following last year’s sickening crash at Bathurst. Mostert is hoping to rejuvenate his season at this weekend’s Winton Super Sprint, which he won last year. The 24 year-old has lacked consistency so far this year, recording back-to-back top 10 finishes just once.

races with just one podium to his name this season at the Clipsal 500 opener.

Mostert said, after the team analysed the performance in Perth.

After his qualifying breakthrough at Barbagallo though, Mostert is now eager to join the growing list of 2016 race winners which has seen eight names on top in nine races.

“It’s annoying because it makes you feel a bit rusty coming back into it, but at least it was a good learning weekend.

“I’m looking forward to going out there and hopefully I can get my name on the winners list at some point this year and see what we can do,” he said. “It is just about trying to find my feet and get back to feeling at one with the car. “We got our qualifying pace back at Perth which was fantastic and now we have just got to work on the race car.”

He has shown flashes of pace achieving two pole positions at the last round in the Perth Super Sprint two weeks ago.

If anything, his experience in Perth reminded him that it was not just about outright speed all the time, which he hopes will be a lesson he can take to Winton this weekend.

However, the Queenslander has struggled in

“I probably hurt the car a little bit too much,”

“I just have to go out there and attack (this) weekend like every other weekend so far. “I’ll try and get the most speed out of the car to head into qualifying, and then try and work out how I’m going to try the save the tyres through the race. “Perth I learnt how to manage the car a bit better and we’ll see if that will pay off somewhere along the lines. “Last year I was having so much fun driving that car around Winton – it was so fast.” Winton’s new track surface is sure to come in for much talk over the weekend as teams scramble to adapt to the much faster and grippier conditions.

Jedinak says Palace not in box seat

S

occeroos midfielder Mile Jedinak has shrugged off suggestions his Crystal Palace side is in the Wembley box seat due to Manchester United’s disrupted FA Cup final preparations. United’s final game of the EPL season last Sunday was postponed due to a bomb scare at Old Trafford, with the clash against Bournemouth hastily rearranged for Tuesday night. The suspect packages were later identified as two fake bombs accidentally left behind by the security firm hired to test out their sniffer dogs. It means United will have just four days between the match against Bournemouth (3-1) and the Wembley clash against Palace, where Socceroos skipper Jedinak is in line to become the first Australian to lead a team out in an FA Cup final. Given the short turnaround, United manager Louis van Gaal rested some of his big names

against Bournemouth, especially with his team out of the running for a Champions League berth next season barring a minor miracle. “It’s hard to say if it will affect them in any shape or form but I expect as a footballer you just get on with how it is,” Jedinak said of United’s disrupted preparation. “It’s having some disruption on their schedule in terms of training and having days off etc in the run-up to playing us so you never can tell.’’ Jedinak is aware that Palace, whose only other FA Cup final appearance was a Wembley loss to Alex Ferguson’s Reds in 1990, head to the showdown as underdog. But the veteran midfielder, who almost left Palace to join Stoke before transfer deadline day in September before signing a new deal to stay, is relishing the chance to topple the giants from Old Trafford. “We have a strong belief at this club because on our day we can match up with most teams

Sharks ready to bite

Littler, who are all in good form, are capable of making that happen as well. The Jets found out how much they need to improve to become a flag fancy last week as ladder leader Tea Tree Gully handed them a lesson with a 95-point belting. The Gullies will be primed for probably their closest premiership rival Payneham Norwood Union’s trek to Pertaringa Oval on Saturday. This looms as a decisive encounter for the number one title ranking but could also be the two sides in the season-decider later in the year.

H

enley is surprisingly yet to win a game this season but it will believe Saturday’s trip to Largs Reserve is its best chance to correct this failing.

Tea Tree Gully’s Dylan Schoenmakers, Adam Maschotta and Zac McKay are developing quickly within an imposing group playing some stellar football at the moment.

The Sharks’ poor start to their game last week against Rostrevor OC proved costly as they improved gradually as the game transpired. Bring their second half effort to this week’s contest from the outset and that elusive win could be realised. Port District’s confidence from recent performances was dented last week by Prince Alfred OC which dealt it a sapping 59-point loss. The Reds will look for a similar result against a struggling reigning premier this week. Goodwood Saints managed to keep Adelaide University at bay last week to snatch an essential nine-point victory but has proven to be well off the top sides in opening rounds. fter losing its first two games of the season, Sacred Heart OC has risen strongly to place itself among the best sides in Division 2. In a tight competition, its current third placing shouldn’t shock anyone but we will get an idea of where it truly fits following its clash against top side Modbury. Beating fellow college rival St Peters OC by a commanding 71 points suggests SHOC can impose themselves on the Division leader this week at the headquarters of amateur football.

bottom side back to earth with a thud. Liam Verity and Chris Burns were instrumental in Modbury’s 10-goal victory. The Thunder will welcome being back home on Saturday with a contest against neighbours SMOSH West Lakes awaiting them. The Lions are only above them on percentage so it becomes an important encounter for both this week.

Charlie Goldsworthy and Tom Fotheringham were the main instigators last week but the team effort is what is getting the job done for Sacred Heart OC.

It has been a couple of poor weeks now for SPOC which is fortunate that it is so close among rival outfits that they remain in touch with the top five. Opponent this week, Broadview, is in a similar position, making this game a turning point that could decide either side’s finals future.

op side Flinders Park looks set to continue its winning way when it hosts bottom side Gepps Cross this week. The Reds have been impressive in the early part of the season, last week beating Walkerville by 11 points after a tight tussle. Mitchell Hall, Thomas Dunn and James Schwarz led the way. Gepps Cross always was playing catch up in its 13-point loss to Plympton. The Rams trailed by 24 points at three quarter time. With Daniel Mason, Mark Boothey and Jack O’Neill playing well. Hard to see anything but a win for the Reds by 56-68 points. Athelstone and Mitcham look set for a beauty at Max Amber Sportsfield. Both sides have lost one game for the season. The Raggies finished strongly to beat Pembroke OS last week by 67 points with Luke Rander (three goals), Angus Owen and Heath Fitzpatrick among the best. Mitcham trailed all day before edging out Seaton Ramblers by four points after trailing

by 24 points at the last change. Daniel Loots, Simon Tucker and Alex Rowe led the way. Ben Geytenbeek kicked four goals. Home ground give the Raggies the nod by 16-28 points. Seaton Ramblers and Kilburn, both coming off losses, meet at Seaton. The Rams lost by four points after leading Mitcham at each change last week. Callann Annett again played well, while Brett Harland and Darren Tremaine backed up well. Kilburn scored well against Golden Grove to kick 18.13 but conceded 20.14 last week. James O’Loughlin, Stephen Scully and Tim Bugg played well. The Rams by 20-34 points. Plympton and Pembroke OS should be tight at Plympton. The Bulldogs beat Gepps Cross by 13 points after leading at each change. Max Scott, Stuart Taverner and Kieren Nelson were best. Pembroke OS was crushed by Athelstone by 67 points last week. The Kings trailed by 15 points at half time. Charles Canny, Ben

Towns, Demons set for showdown

E

dwardstown and Eastern Park should provide spectators with a gripping contest when they meet at Edwardstown this Saturday. Both sides are in good form with Edwardstown, second, coming off a 49-point win against Kenilworth last week. Kane Mulvaney, Kyle Harding (five goals) and Aaron Woolard played well, while Aaron Parsons kicked five goals. Eastern Park sits fourth with four wins, last week holding out Hope Valley by five points away. Eastern Park, which trailed by 18 points at quarter time, saw good games from Ricky Butler, Nathan McIver (four goals) and Nathan Warren. A line ball game to assess with Towns at home looking at a slight edge by 10-26 points. North Haven hosts Pooraka in a fifth versus eighth match up. The Magpies beat Salisbury away in a low scoring battle by seven points last week. Mark Rowe, Mark Cocchiaro and Jack Howden were among the best players. Pooraka had the bye last week and before that was beaten by Colonel Light Gardens by 50 points. At home the Magpies can win again by 14-28 points.

Colonel Light Gardens is home when it takes on bottom side Kenilworth. The Lions have won three games to sit just outside the five, last week losing to Westminster Old Scholars by 30 points. Peter Rhodes, Jakob Napier and Ty Corey played well. Kenilworth has had a horror start to the season, without a win and finding it hard to match most sides. Last week it fell to Edwardstown by 49 points with Jordan Kerr, David Friend Cleggett and Nicholas Chesser (three goals) good players. Hard to see the Kookaburras breaking through this week. The Lions by 40-54 points. Salisbury and Hope Valley both had close losing matches last week. Salisbury’s best in its narrow loss to North Haven were Shaun Rowe, Scott McPherson and Matthew Fleming. Brad Horjus kicked three goals. Hope Valley lost to Eastern Park 15.6 (96) to 13.13 (91) last week with Jamie Dowling, Daniel Williamson and Daniel Tanczos (five goals) among the best. Salisbury can bounce back by 22-34 points.

A win is on the way o ne of Division 5’s two winless sides will finally break the drought when they meet each other on Saturday.

the top five open with Blackfriars OS playing Smithfield at home and Rosewater expecting Lockleys at Eric Sutton Oval this week.

Elizabeth will host Pulteney at Argana Park with the Eagles being the nearest to achieving a successful outcome this season and would be favoured to take their first points here.

All four sides had wins last week when some had to fight just that little harder than others to register success.

They gave Rosewater a fright last week but could not complete the job, falling by just 14 points. The Navy Blues, on the other hand, are really struggling this year. They were no match for Blackfriars OS last week, losing by 53 points and even Elizabeth could prove too hard to rise above. It is tight at the other end of the ladder as well with only one win separating the top five sides, making every game crucial in the race for finals positions. There are two big matches that could split

The Hounds had little resistance in accounting for the bottom side as already mentioned while the Panthers were made to work for their win over Glenunga, finally getting the upper hand by 14 points in the end. Josh Kinsman and Phuoc Vo from Blackfriars OS were unwavering in their side’s victory while Robert Marshall and Trent Norton found enough to get Smithfield up. Despite winning last week, Rosewater will need to lift more again on Saturday to match the Demons’ intensity. Bulldogs David Giufredda and Daniel Reardon must inspire teammates to another

level but contain the likes of Hayden Martinello and Simon Ascoli after they steered Lockleys to a formidable 12-goal triumph over Greenacres. It looks just as ominous for the Dragons this week as they head to Hectorville which is the Division 5 ladder leader at present. The Hounds Jake Mazzone and Daniel Sauerwald were let loose against CBCOC last week to continue their side’s rise. The Dolphins’ finals hopes could rest on beating a valiant Glenunga which remains thereabouts but not quite good enough in recent contests. It is not far from turning for the Rams though. oodville South hosts Brahma Lodge in a rare Friday night match. The second versus fourth contest looks a beauty. Woodville South beat Mitchell Park by 40 points last week with Brett Hains best for the Cats. Brahma Lodge found Ingle Farm too strong last week, falling by 28 points. Dylan Brooks was solid with four goals. The Cats can win by 12-26 points. West Croydon is flying without loss and looks tough at home for Trinity Old Scholars. The Hawks beat Fitzroy by 61 points after clearing out in the last quarter. Stanley Freeman led a strong group of good players. Trinity OS was too strong for Adelaide Lutheran at home, winning by 31 points with Wade Hall among its best. The Hawks can soar by 38-50 points. Houghton Districts and Ingle Farm looks an even battle at Houghton. The Raiders, fifth, beat Mawson Lakes by two points last week with Alex Bray (five goals) starring. Ingle Farm recorded a top 28-point victory against Brahma Lodge, with Peter Verigan among the best players for the Bulldogs. Ingle Farm can win again by 14-28 points. Mawson Lakes and Fitzroy sees a seven v

bottom clash at Mawson Lakes. Last week the Saints missed by two points against Houghton Districts after scores were tight all day. Best for Mawson was Lachlan Kennett (five goals). Fitzroy pushed West Croydon for three quarters before losing by 61 points, Harry Hutchison leading the way. The Saints by 20-34 points, Adelaide Lutheran and Mitchell Park are battling in eighth and ninth place respectively but have plenty to play for in the South Parklands. The Bulldogs lost to Trinity Old Scholars by 31 points last week with Jeremy Borgas leading the way. Mitchell Park lost to Woodville South by 40 points with Ben Weekley playing a fine game. True favourite to be revealed

O

utright flag favourite will be determined this week when Unley Mercedes Jets meets unbeaten Salisbury West.

At home, the Jets need to show some spirit for their own fortunes going forward and a win here would give them greater belief that they can push towards higher honours later in the season. The Tigers continued on their demanding way, defeating Central United by 68 points, and Dylan Koler (12 goals against the Bulldogs), Jake Williams and Adam Jones will look to repel another challenger. United is in for another test meeting Prince Alfred OC this week after the Reds suffered a surprise loss to an emerging Flinders University. The Crabs are no walkovers this year and, in fact, would now give themselves hope of gaining the double chance on recent performances. They face the highly anticipated all-University clash on Saturday in a much better position

than previous seasons to finally achieve bragging rights against close rival Adelaide University. Tom Pyke, Juan Cabada and Jake Turner will be eager for a rare victory over their usually more fancied combatant. The Falcons will host North Pines, which could be its best opportunity to snare their first win of the season. The Redbacks fought bravely against St Pauls OS last week but could not withhold their opponent’s run in the finish, going down by 13 points. The Saints now have the week off. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Five’s good for Hayes

David Hayes has confirmed that Churchill Dancer, Fast ‘N’ Rocking, Faatinah, Miss Promiscuity and Sheidel will make up a quarter of the capacity field of 20. Hayes declared that while each runner carried a different formline into the $500,000 Group One 1200 metre event, he considered each a realistic chance of success. “All five of them come in with different form lines but they all represent great chances for the stable,” he said. “All the horses are in good shape, including Miss Promiscuity who’s overcome her fall in the Sangster Stakes and she hasn’t missed a beat since that race. “Fast ‘N’ Rocking is a high-class sprinter and Faatinah is a threeyear-old of enormous potential and a last start winner. “The Goodwood has been one of those races that have just managed to escape me. But this year, with five very good sprinters, all are capable of winning at this level.” Churchill Dancer has produced a number of gutsy efforts in four starts this year; most notably a close second in the Group Two Australia Stakes (1200m) in

Consistent performer Fast ‘N’ Rocking has continued to improve this time in; following up a credible mid-pack performance in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) with a close third in the Group Three Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) last month. Faatinah has only had seven career starts going into the Goodwood, but produced undoubtedly her most impressive effort to date to win the Group Two Euclase Stakes over course and distance a fortnight ago.

DION HAYMAN’S SUPER QUIZ ONE POINT WARM-UPS 1. What relation is Blue Patrick Cripps to Eagle Jamie? 2. What position does Emily Beaton normally play? 3. How many goals did Josh Kennedy kick in the first quarter against St Kilda? 4. Who is Joe Ingles’ wife? 5. Who is the leading Australian run-scorer in the IPL so far this season?

TWO POINT PONDERS 6. Greg Swann is CEO of which AFL club?

Miss Promiscuity, who is looking to add to her Group Three black type placings, was unlucky to lose rider Luke Nolen en route during the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) two weeks ago, but is probably in the best of form of all Hayes’ runners.

7. Who kicked the winning goal for Richmond against Sydney?

Sheidel finished an agonisinglyclose second in the Robert Sangster Stakes last start to put her in the mix.

12. Who celebrated his 29th birthday with victory in the Rome Masters?

It is a particularly strong field though for this year’s edition of the race with the Darren Weirtrained Black Heart Bart an early favourite. However, there are many chances including Newmarket winner The Quarterback, William Reid winner Flamberge, rising star Superido, Tasmanian Admiral, the Freedman’s McKay Stakes winner Super One, Robert Smerdon’s Under The Louvre, Weir’s second runner Sooboog and the Hayes and Dabernig quintet.

IT’s a joke A WOMAN WALKED INTO THE KITCHEN to find her husband stalking about with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Hunting flies,” he responded. “Oh, killing any?” she asked. “Yep, three males, two females,” he replied. Intrigued, she asked, How can you tell? He responded, “Three were on a beer can, two were on the phone.

8. Who won at TPC Sawgrass? 9. What colour was Richmond’s trim last weekend? 10. Who won La Liga?

THREE POINT PLAYS 11. Who last weekend became the youngest winner of a Formula One race?

13. Who won the SA Derby at Morphettville last weekend? 14. Which EPL venue had its final day match postponed because of fears of a bomb threat? 15. In what sport would you associate Australian Damien Howson?

FOUR POINT BONUS 16. Which current US sporting star features in the US romantic comedy ‘Trainwreck’ featuring Amy Schumer? 17. How many players are there per side in a game of handball? 18. Which Argentinean international scored 36 goals this season for Napoli, equalling Serie A’s 87 year-old scoring record? 19. Which Kangaroo and former Swan now share Tom Liberatore’s AFL record of 19 tackles in a game?

FIVE POINT EXTRA 20. In the SANFL, name the club and the year when the reigning premier last won the wooden spoon.

JUDGMENT DAY. 0–10 POINTS You are a sporting dunce. 11–20 A lot more work needed. 21–30 A strong showing. 31–40 A real bright spark. 41–45 Bordering on genius. 46 OR MORE You are a sporting guru.

ONE-POINTERS: 1 - Cousin (third). 2 - Wing Attack (for the Adelaide Thunderbirds. 3 - Five. 4 - Renae Ingles (Hallinan). 5 - Dave Warner. TWO-POINTERS: 6 - Brisbane. 7 - Sam Lloyd. 8 - Jason Day. 9 – Purple (in support of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation). 10 - Barcelona. THREE-POINTERS: 11 - Max Verstappen. 12 - Andy Murray. 13 - Howard Be Thy Name. 14 - Old Trafford (Manchester United). 15 - Cycling. FOURPOINTERS: 16 - LeBron James. 17 - Seven. 18 - Gonzalo Higuain. 19 - Jack Ziebell and Jude Bolton. FIVE-POINTER: 20 - Glenelg in 1935.

Hayes, along with co-trainer Tom Dabernig, will try to emulate his father Colin who won the race 45 years ago for the family with Romantic Son.

January and a credible fourth in the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) in March.

C

hampion trainer David Hayes has surprisingly never won a Goodwood Handicap but will send around five strong hopes in South Australia’s premier sprinting race on Saturday.
