Just looking for consistency

and having the tribunal reject his argument.

A

The offer of leniency by admitting guilt even when believing you are innocent is a blight on the system.

FL Operations Manager Mark Evans came into his role in 2013 declaring the match review system needed a shake-up, but two seasons on and the only change we have seen is the dumping of the points’ rulings.

which resulted in concussion, especially after Carlton’s Bryce Gibbs was rubbed out for two weeks for a similar outcome on Power star Robbie Gray.

Player penalties remain as confusing as ever.

Now even Evans comes out a week later to indicate that Schulz should have been suspended.

The panel consists of Nathan Burke, Michael Christian, Daniel Harford, Shane Wakelin, Brad Sewell and Luke Ball, with three meeting weekly to assess each game. The lack of clubs represented here is a concerning factor. Each case needs to be adjudicated on its merits, but similar punishments need to replicate similar crimes. The sling tackle has become an area of controversy of late, with player protection now paramount, in particular to head injuries. Therefore, it was baffling that Port Adelaide’s Jay Schulz had no case to answer following his sling tackle on Ted Richards

Whether we agree with the tackle being a punishable offence, precedence had been set.

Why didn’t he appeal the MRP’s findings, which he is quite in his powers to do? Punishments throughout the year haven’t fitted the crime either. In Gibbs’ circumstance, three weeks down to two seemed excessive. One week at most for a first instance would have been far more accepting. The bump has also been a bone of contention. Gold Coast’s Steven May has probably been the most discussed case this year when Brisbane opponent Tom Rockliff actually ran into him. But he received a three-week ban after trying to contest the charge

Recent behind the play infringements or off the play incidents have only received fines but if even the league is saying that they are not a good look for the game, then shouldn’t stronger penalties be handed down to stamp them out? This is not a witch hunt on particular players or clubs but just a puzzling call for penalties to fit the actions and to act as deterrents for them to be repeated in the future. It doesn’t seem that complicated, really. Penalise players according to their actions and just give us some consistency. At the same time, with more Thursday night games expected, it is probably time the MRP sat after every game or at least on a Saturday morning to adjudicate previous matches. Maybe then the media scrutiny would subside as well. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS UP

THUMBS Down

After a tumultuous Wimbledon campaign, Nick Kyrgios’ attention is fully focused on spearheading Australia’s Davis Cip tie against Kazakhstan in Darwin, alongside Lleyton Hewitt, Sam Groth, Thanasi Kokkinakis and John Millman, according to Aussie captain Wally Masur.

The 2015 Tour de France hadn’t even reached the mountains but the carnage on the road in week one has been immense. Aussie team Orica-GreenEDGE copped the brunt, losing three riders – Simon Gerrans, Daryl Impey and Michael Albasini – with broken bones while Michael Mathews continues with fractured ribs.

In a humorous aside, Tennis Australia issued a press release earlier this week saying that Bernard Tomic, suspended from this weekend’s Davis Cup squad, was playing at the ‘Hall of Shame’ Championships in Newport, USA instead of ‘Hall of Fame’, blaming it as a “typo”.

Yellow jersey wearers could not stay out trouble with Fabian Cancellara fracturing a vertebrae and Tony Martin breaking his collarbone, leaving general classification favourite Chris Froome well ahead of other top fancies.

Hard to focus but finals on line

T

hey were unforgettable scenes never witnessed on any sporting arena, let alone in football circles, last week at Domain Stadium.

Players’ emotions finally poured out publicly after putting on stoic faces since their coach’s shocking death just a week earlier. However, as hard as it may be, their focus must return to football this week with a Showdown brewing. Wednesday’s memorial service for Phil Walsh must place some closure on his passing as even he would want the game to move on.

for Adelaide which needs at least five more wins to secure a spot in the top eight. With games against Sydney, Richmond and West Coast again to come, the Crows really cannot afford to drop this week’s clash at Adelaide Oval. So it will still be a hotly fought Showdown like all the others. Power key defender Alipate Carlile will miss another week with back and hip problems while it would be hard to consider fellow defender Tom Jonas, who didn’t play in the SANFL last week due to a quad complaint.

He will forever be in the memories of players, of both sides, and the lessons he taught will always be with them but the grieving process needs to pass, allowing the healing to begin.

Port is likely to be unchanged on Sunday.

While this will symbolically be a more reserved Showdown between the Power and the Crows, once the players cross the white line, it will be as fiercely fought as any other.

Nathan van Berlo was subbed out of last

However there will be a weird aura surrounding the game’s atmosphere that no one will have felt before. Walsh would certainly still be pushing his boys on towards the finals. Port Adelaide also holds onto slim finals aspirations so this will prove to be a crucial encounter in deciding either side’s fate. The Power willed themselves to victory last Thursday night over Collingwood and while it wasn’t pretty, they held on like the Port of old in the end. It was a win derived from their strong mental resolve, but their greatest fault this year remains and that is letting opposition sides back into a contest that they basically had in their grasp. In the past few years, they would punish their opponents further and truly finish sides off which hasn’t been happening this season, placing them in the position they are despite higher expectations. Port Adelaide needs to manufacture at least six wins from its next eight games, possibly even seven considering its low percentage, making this week’s clash more paramount. It can then build some confidence over following weeks against Essendon, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs before another crucial encounter against GWS Giants. Hawthorn and Fremantle also stand in its way. Winning on Sunday afternoon is just as critical

Adelaide, on the other hand, could welcome back Kyle Cheney (sore back) which would probably be at the expense of Kyle Hartigan.

Footy footnotes West Coast fans must be commended for the respect they showed distraught Crows players as they left the field last Saturday night while Power supporters spontaneously illuminating Adelaide Oval with their mobile phones last Thursday night was truly honouring of Phil Walsh’s memory. The biggest things to come out of the weekend football-wise were: • The changing of the guard in Perth as the Eagles loom as a greater flag threat than cross-town rivals, the Dockers • Ross Lyons has a game plan that restricts the opposition from scoring but if his side cannot score either then it is going to struggle to win a premiership • Should a top-two clash be programmed at Aurora Stadium where capacity is only 21,000? – the league would have known when drawing up the fixture that Hawthorn and Fremantle could lure Blockbuster status – maybe the end result justified their thinking • “If anything strange is going to happen, it will happen to ‘Swanny’,” Magpies coach Nathan Buckley said – well it doesn’t get any stranger than hearing Dane Swan was mistaken for a bikie by police in Adelaide last week while just going for a coffee – he thought it was a ‘Footy Show’ prank but it was the SA Police that got stitched up • Honourable losses are building up for Collingwood to the point that the once touted top four side could still miss finals altogether

week’s match against the Eagles at three quarter-time without any injury concern and his form of late suggests he could be facing a stint in the Reserves soon as is possibly Matthew Wright or David Mackay. Another debutant could line up as well following Riley Knights’ bright start to his AFL career last week with Rory Atkins continuing to impress in the SANFL and ability to offer more outside run to the side. Unlucky midfielder Sam Kerridge returned from another injury lay-off last week, getting back to things as if he’d never been out, but may need a few more runs before senior selection beckons. Good luck to both teams in this strangest of times. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN • Another ill-informed Eddie rant was predictable but how can even he justify a Magpies player dropping knees into an opponent’s head – it was a low blow from Taylor Adams and a low blow from McGuire as well – Adams can consider himself lucky to only receive a two-week ban • Carlton has now won only two of its past 17 Friday night matches dating back to 2012 – time to share primetime viewing • It’s the sling tackle one week and now the ‘chicken wing’ tackle is back – or was Cat Joel Selwood chasing his own KFC/Nandos deal from Judd – he cops a week for the action though • Knees up, Mother Brown or should that be knees down, Sam Mitchell – it’s a trend creeping into our game to restrict opponents with tough tackling being outlawed – another Hawthorn fine is getting a bit repetitive • We saw three players return to state league competition from knee reconstructions last weekend –Andy Otten was a welcome sight for the Crows, Giant Jonathan Patton returned to action after his second but it was great to see Cat Daniel Menzel get through after four major knee operations • A huge feat just to get out there but unfortunately former Hawk and Sun Campbell Brown was stopped in his tracks trying to cross the English channel six hours into his 32km swim due to extreme weather conditions – he still managed to raise more than $100,000 for disadvantaged Australian children which must be applauded

AFL PREVIEW ROUND16

BY DION HAYMAN

NORTH MELBOURNE V ESSENDON

GEELONG V WESTERN BULLDOGS

Essendon has won just one of its past five games against North Melbourne. That was a 39-point win at Docklands in round one of 2014. Paul Chapman kicked four goals in his first outing for the Bombers while Lindsay Thomas kicked four for the Roos North reversed that result in the second elimination final at the MCG when it recovered from a 27-point half-time deficit to win by 12 points, 14.9 (93) to 12.9 (81). Ben Brown booted four goals in that comeback win. North beat Essendon again by 11 points at Docklands in round seven. The Bombers led that one by 12 points at quarter-time but lost momentum in the second term when it was outscored 5.3 to 1.3. The Kangaroos went on to win 13.15 (93) to 12.10 (82). The Roos have won 12 of 16 games against the Bombers since 2002 and lead comfortably at Docklands against their co-tenants 10 wins to four, having won their first five meetings at the ground.

Geelong has won 11 of its past 12 games against the Western Bulldogs including its past seven on the bounce. The Cats’ longest winning streak against the Bulldogs is 11 in a row from 1988-94. They have also won 10 on end from 1949-54 and 1962-68. The Bulldogs’ most recent win against the Cats was in 2009 at Docklands when by 14 points. The Dogs tightened their grip on a top-four berth, beating the second-placed Cats who had led by three points at three quarter-time. It was Geelong’s last loss for the year as they went on to claim the 2009 premiership. The Bulldogs haven’t won at Kardinia Park since taking an 18-point victory in 2003, failing at their last five attempts. Their only meeting past year saw the Cats win at home by 13 points after keeping the Dogs goalless in the first term. Geelong won 10.9 (69) to 7.14 (56) in the lowest scoring game between the sides since 1988.

GOLD COAST V GWS GIANTS

COLLINGWOOD V WEST COAST

The AFL’s two babies meet for the seventh time and the Suns lead four wins to two, having taken four straight wins from 2012-14. However, the Giants have bookended that streak with victories in their first and most recent games against Gold Coast. In 2012 in their first meeting at Manuka, the Giants famously came from behind booting six unanswered goals in the final term to win by 27 points, 13.16 (94) to 9.13 (67). In round four earlier this year at the same ground, the Giants were much more convincing, leading at every change on their way to a 66-point win, 16.23 (119) to 7.11 (53). Dylan Shiel had 39 possessions while Cam McCarthy kicked 5.2 and Jeremy Cameron 4.6 as the Giants held the Suns to their lowest score in this fixture. But the Giants have lost all three previous games at Carrara, coming closest in their first meeting at the ground in 2012 with a 30-point defeat.

Collingwood has won 10 of its past 12 games against West Coast. It was beaten at its last start at Subiaco in round 20 last year when the Eagles made a late and albeit unrewarded charge towards September, blitzing the Magpies by 60 points. The Eagles booted six goals to one in the premiership quarter to open up an imposing 48-point lead and went on to win 19.12 (126) to 10.6 (66). Scott Lycett and Jack Darling both scored four goals while Josh Kennedy added three. The Magpies have actually not beaten West Coast in Perth since 2009. They also lost in 2012 by 49 points. However, this game is at Docklands where the Eagles haven’t beaten Collingwood since 2003, losing three times since. Collingwood leads four wins to two at the ground. The Eagles also beat the Pies there in 2000. These sides are dead square after 45 matches with 22 wins apiece and one draw.

The 2014 grand finalists meet for the second time in quick succession and Hawthorn will be keen to avenge its four-point loss in round eight in a match it appeared to have won for much of the last quarter. The Swans led 5.1 to 0.4 at quarter-time but Hawthorn reduced the deficit to 13 points at the main break and took a four-point lead at the last change. That lead was out to 12 points when Cyril Rioli goaled at the nine-minute mark. But Jarrad McVeigh goaled twice reducing the Hawks lead to just six and then one point. Luke Parker restored the Swans’ lead after 22 minutes of a gripping final term. Luke Breust could have won it for the Hawks with the last score of the match but he missed and the Swans won 11.7 (73) to 9.15 (69). Buddy Franklin went scoreless against his old side – the first time that had happened since 2009. The Swans lead two wins to one at Homebush.

Fremantle has won 14 of its past 18 games against Carlton since 2002. The Dockers have also won their past two matches against the Blues but had a real fight on their hands before winning their only clash last year in round 19 at Subiaco. After leading by 11 points at half-time, Carlton stunned the home crowd, taking a four-point lead at three quarter-time. Marc Murphy’s opening goal of the final term made that a 10-point lead before the Dockers scrapped their way back in front at the 22-minute mark through Michael Barlow. Jarrad Waite put the Blues back in front at the 25-minute mark, only to see Lachie Neale kick the winner for the Dockers after 29 and a half minutes. Fremantle won 12.11 (83) to 11.12 (78). Hayden Ballantyne finished with three goals. It denied Carlton a third straight win against Fremantle in Perth. The Dockers lead Carlton 10-6 at Subiaco and 16-12 overall.

MELBOURNE V BRISBANE Sunday 12.40pm, MCG

Brisbane has won five games in a row against Melbourne which is a club record and something it could not achieve during its power years at the turn of the century. The Demons haven’t beaten the Lions since 2011 at the MCG when they scored an 11-point win. Since then, the Lions’ five wins have been by an average of 34 points with no game closer than 19 points. Their only meeting last year was at Docklands when Brisbane won by 23 points, 11.8 (74) to 6.15 (51). Melbourne was either level or leading at every change of ends before collapsing in the last quarter, allowing the Lions to double their score with a final term burst of 6.2 to 1.2. This game is at the MCG where the sides last met in 2012 when Brisbane won an opening round match by 41 points. But it is one of only three wins from 14 games by Brisbane against Melbourne at the MCG. Overall, Melbourne leads 21 wins to 20..

PORT ADELAIDE V ADELAIDE Sunday 2.50pm, Adelaide Oval

Showdown 39 will be the fourth between the South Australian sides at Adelaide Oval. Port won the maiden clash at the refurbished ground last year by 55 points before the Crows took an upset 23-point win in the return bout. In round five this year, it was 13th versus 5th but Port led at every change and took the honours by 24 points, 18.7 (115) to 13.13 (91). Jay Schulz was on song with 5.1 while Eddie Betts scored 5.3 for the Crows. Robbie Gray won his second Showdown Medal with 32 possessions and a goal. Port leads this argument 21 wins to 17 with a longest winning streak of seven games from 2000-03. The Crows’ best streak is four wins from 2004-06. Tony Modra, Peter Vardy and Warren Tredrea hold the Showdown goals record with seven.

Richmond has won its past five games in a row against St Kilda, the Tigers’ best winning streak against the Saints since their last golden era, 1980-82. They last won six in a row against St Kilda from 1972-74. St Kilda’s last win against Richmond was in 2010 at Docklands by 38 points. The sides played out a draw in their next meeting in round two, 2011. Jack Riewoldt has been the main man for the Tigers in their current winning streak with returns of eight, seven, three, two and six. He has 41 goals from 11 games against the Saints, making them his favourite opponent in the competition. The Saints hold sway at Docklands, leading 11 wins to five but the Tigers have won the past two. Overall, Richmond leads 107 wins to 69 with three draws. The encounter is the ‘Fight Like Maddie Match’, honouring the late sister of Nick Riewoldt and cousin of Jack Riewoldt.

The Bulldogs are making an amazing late charge for finals action and now with Sturt formally out of contention, they just need South to drop some late games to keep the door open. The customary late flurry from West ensured the points against Glenelg last week, with its talent across all lines continuing to dig it out of the difficult situations it tends to create on its own through 20 minute lapses during a game. Central’s record in these encounters at this ground is imposing – winning 16 of the past 17 – and while history is not always a guide to the future, it does hold some sway here. The Bulldogs have usually been adept at working West hard around the wider flanks and it is worth noting that in four of the past five games at Elizabeth, the Bloods have not passed 65 points. That said, there is a real class factor about them at present that would not go ignored by Central coach Roy Laird. He will work to cut down many of West’s medium forwards who have been doing so much damage on the scoreboard this season. Ladder positions would suggest West, but there is something irresistible about Central that gives it the edge.

If you had told most North fans their side’s only win to date would be the round two victory between these two clubs, most would have strongly doubted you. However, it is safe to say that the Roosters have easily been the most disappointing team of the season, with no major difference in style or long term enthusiasm since the sacking of coach Ken McGregor. Adelaide has had its moments but has only won one more match than North. It hangs with opponents for long periods, but seems to lack the consistency and finishing to regularly threaten. Regularly tinkering with its structure can hurt its ability to get a run on. One club though will get the chance to bank a win and shift the loser one step closer to the wooden spoon. In theory, this should really drive North’s motivation this week. The job of turning around the attitude at Prospect will be a long term one and while it is hard to judge the Roosters too strongly this year, there is little doubt many are playing for their careers over the closing weeks. Part of the challenge for coach Michael Handby will be to try and mix things up to see how versatile some of his charges are. North is too unreliable to tip here.

Plenty on the line for the nearest SANFL neighbours, as first hosts fifth in a match that could have major ramifications in some weeks for the finals. The Eagles are a game and over seven percent clear of Norwood in top spot, and would be mindful of the benefit of holding that position, while Port are a game and a half clear of Central in fifth spot, but well aware of the latter’s home run. Losing by the smallest margin to Norwood last week, after seeming to have the game in their keeping at half time, was a blow to their chances. The Magpies have peppered the goals in the past few matches between the clubs, having less than 20 scoring shots only once in the past five encounters, but have found scoring a little more difficult this year with an average of only 79 points a game. Then again, the Eagles are averaging only 82 points a game but are strangling the opposition to an average of 55 points. This throws the impetus onto Magpies coach Garry Hocking to find different scoring avenues to throw out the Eagles defensive strategies and give Port an x-factor which it has lacked at times in 2015. Whether it has enough options to penetrate a miserly Eagles back line is the challenge, and the home team appear to have the answers here.

Johnson seeks Lord’s redemption

M

itchell Johnson has returned to the scene of his greatest failure, looking to square the ledger as Australia attempt to level the Ashes series.

“He’s swinging the ball and bowling quickly,” Pat Cummins said.

Johnson was crowned ICC Cricketer of the Year in 2009 but, just as memorable that year, was his Lord’s lambasting.

“I think it’s always a pretty good wicket.”

The left-armer came unstuck on cricket’s most famous slope, conceding match figures of 3-200 as England broke through for its first Ashes win at the venue in 75 years. Even the most congenial of English fans at the home of cricket taunted Johnson’s lack of control. The 33 year-old remodelled his action and rebuilt his confidence, famously taking 37 wickets in the 2013-14 series. The express paceman was far less threatening on a docile deck in Cardiff, where England cruised to a 169-run win in the 2015 Ashes opener. Yet the Australian camp is quietly confident Johnson will be more effective at Lord’s.

All eyes on Spieth

i

t’s the Old Course but a new challenger as Jordan Spieth attempts a feat not even Tiger Woods could manage.

The 21 year-old, dubbed ‘Heir Jordan’, will continue his pursuit of golf’s grand slam. No player has been able to win golf’s four modern-day majors in a single season, but world number two Spieth will tee up in the British Open on Thursday chasing the third leg after becoming just the sixth player to claim the first two at the Masters and US Open. “What he’s doing is phenomenal,” said threetime Open champion Nick Faldo as Spieth’s peers refused to dismiss the prospect of the fearless young Texan pulling off the slam. “The way he is playing, I don’t think there is any pressure on him,” said Australia’s number one Jason Day, returning to the home of golf for the first time since making the cut on his major debut in 2010. Five years on and Day is among the favourites to sip out of the Claret Jug on Sunday, but

“I’m sure that Lord’s (pitch) with a bit more in it, he’s going to be super dangerous. Cummins suggested the tourists have already picked themselves up after being belted inside four days, with the fast bowling cartel leading the way. Johnson’s responsibilities as the side’s spearhead will be amplified in London if Mitchell Starc is unable to play. (at the time of writing) Starc snared seven wickets in Cardiff, but injured his ankle on day one and was racing the clock to be fit for the second Test. Peter Siddle will replace Starc if the left-armer is unable to prove his fitness this week. The other question regarding the XI at the time or writing was whether Mitch Marsh would come into the team for all-rounder Shane Watson. BY AAP

the three-time major championship runner-up had no doubt Spieth is the player to beat, particularly in the absence of injured world number one Rory McIlroy. “He is really young, he has a boatload of confidence and the way he is finishing off tournaments is pretty special right now,” said Day after Spieth claimed his fourth win of 2015 at the John Deere Classic. Spieth can also snare McIlroy’s top ranking with victory at St Andrews as the Northern Irishman sits out his home major while nursing ruptured ankle ligaments from an untimely football mishap. Meanwhile, John Senden is out to rectify an anomaly on his golfing CV. A two-time winner on the US PGA Tour and former Australian Open champion, Senden has been among Australia’s most consistent performers for more than a decade. The 44 year-old has had top-10 finishes at the Masters, PGA and US Open, but never seriously threatened at any of the sport’s four annual majors. BY AAP

Wallabies look set to showcase new identity

A

new dawn beckons for the Wallabies and lock Rob Simmons believes a strong first-up performance against South Africa would be the first step in convincing critics that Australia can be a credible force on the world stage once more. Saturday night’s Rugby Championship Test looms as the grand unveiling for what should be a new-look side under coach Michael Cheika, who will steer Australia for the first time on home soil. Simmons doesn’t accept that the Wallabies have fallen “off the radar” as an international force and despite their struggles in recent years, deserve to be seen as genuine World Cup contenders. “It’s very important for us as a team to start building our own identity and putting our best foot forward from the start, and show the rest of Australia and the world how we want to play this game,” Simmons said. “Something we’ve worked on for 12 months now is to find out exactly what we want to be. “There’s no ifs or buts we have this identity, anyone can come into this group and they’ll know what we’re about and what they have to do to fit in. “We started that during the spring tour. This weekend is all about us trying to put that out to the public.” Simmons is in contention to start against the Springboks and take on the line-out calling duties for the Wallabies, but there is stiff challenge for a spot with the likes of Dave Dennis, Dean Mumm and the giant Will Skelton in the squad. Simmons said he feels even fitter now than during the Super Rugby season, after spending the last few weeks in camp while the Waratahs and Brumbies played finals. “We’ve had three weeks of just getting smashed now and we’re ready to play,” he said. “We’ve done a fair bit of work and we feel as though we’re a lot fitter. “Everyone’s feeling in good shape and ready to get out there to play another game now.” BY AAP

ALH group DIVISIOn 1 Hawks clinging to top five

S

alisbury North is grimly holding onto fifth position on the Division 1 ladder, after just failing to achieve a handy gap on its nearest challengers. The Hawks made a desperate last quarter run at Henley last week but fell one point short of putting a buffer between themselves and Rostrevor OC and Port District. In the trying conditions of last weekend, they produced a strong first half but the Sharks gained ascendency after the break with a six-goal to one third quarter. Salisbury North then held the home side to only one point in the last quarter but that proved to be the difference in the end. It could put paid to the Magpies’ finals chances on Saturday when visiting Largs Reserve and hope Goodwood Saints are too good for ROCs to give them a safer hold on fifth. The Saints did the Hawks a favour last week as well keeping Port District back with a comfortable 67-point victory. Rostrevor OC has struggled for consistency this season and needs to find form to realise any ambitions of playing finals football. ROCs discovered why Tea Tree Gully was being touted as the real deal this year, going down by 109 points. Saints trio Tom Anderson, Luke Stanton and Tom Barry could be just as punishing as well. The Gullies make the long trek to Sacred

Heart College this week in what could be another one-sided affair. SHOC again found its 2014 Division Two grand final opponent Payneham Norwood Union a stumbling block and could be back in Division 2 next year if it cannot manage a few more wins in the remaining rounds. Jonathan Birkin, Josh Hand and Zac Mckay from Tea Tree Gully will certainly make it hard for it again this week. The Falcons took a stranglehold on their contest against Sacred Heart OC in the first half last week but were unable to go with it in a dour second half. They were 76 points up at the main break but only stretched that another five points to 81 in the finish. While Lewis Klemm, Harrison Pride and Chase Bower controlled the contest, coach Garry McIntosh will be encouraging four quarters of intensity against Portland this week, particularly with the possibly of percentage proving crucial for a top-three spot. Adelaide University excavated itself from the clutches of the bottom two sides last week with an important 57-point win over the Thunder. To get back in the finals chase though the Blacks will need a few wins against sides above them and Henley could be a starting point.

The Falcons will need to play out the whole match on Saturday after forging some crucial percentage last week. Photo: Jayson Vowles Nick Beneke, Damian Cunningham and John Noonan need to be mindful of their opponent’s class in the likes of Dale Symmons, Tim Broadbent and Addison Whitehouse to name a few. Henley needs to win to stay in the top three. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Reds ageing well

T

he top three in Division 2 is not out of reach for Prince Alfred OC just yet and it faces a crucial clash this week against the side it hopes to oust in Gaza.

The Reds have a small gap on those fighting it out for fifth position and a win would further secure their finals berth but the ultimate reward could be a top-three finish. They proved too strong for sixth-placed Scotch OC, winning by 52 points, on the back of Lachlan McNamara’s and Ryan Tromans’ performances but they all must take another step up on Saturday. The Eagles stopped St Peters OC recent hot streak to record an impressive 67-point triumph with John Boxer and Matthew Richards at the forefront.

Walkerville is unlikely to receive any favours either from the ladder leaders this week. The Cats’ desire for survival appears to have diminished after a 33-point loss to their closest rival SMOSH West Lakes.

Scotch OC’s hopes of remaining in touch get more challenging with an away trip to Modbury ahead.

The Lions have a three-win buffer on Walkerville which they should be able to maintain until the minor round ends.

The second-placed Hawks still have yearnings for top spot so could be a tough day out for the ex-college boys.

Finals’ aspirations are out though for James Cibich and Lyndon Parham but they can still shape the five with St Peters OC up next.

Modbury’s Jay Shaw and Kyle McNaughton did just as they needed to beat winless Gepps Cross last week by six goals but on home soil they won’t want to rest on their laurels. Broadview should hold onto its finals aspirations when the Rams visit on Saturday. The Tigers were given a lesson of what is needed to succeed at this level at the moment when Unley Mercedes Jets dealt out their 57-point punishment.

Vili’s DIVISIOn 3 Phantoms, Kings locked in battle royale

P

HOS Camden and Pembroke Old Scholars will look to this week’s battle at Camden Oval to strengthen their bids for a top-three position come finals.

The top-placed Phantoms recorded a solid 50-point win against Flinders Park last week with Adam Scholz, Nick Ramsey and Andrew Harris (five goals) among the best. PHOS took top place on percentage from Athelstone which had the bye. Pembroke Old Scholars held third place when it snuck in against Golden Grove by two points, 7.13 (55) to 7.11 (53) at Haslam Oval. Henry Nicholson, Ryan Marini and Alexander Catford led the side’s better players. PHOS beat the Kings by 30 points earlier in the season. This week looks similar, the Phantoms 15-28 points.

Old Iggies to keep pace with the top three. The Rams battled hard last week against Mitcham before going down by 36 points. Matthew Scherwitzel, Darren Tremaine and Aaron Cartwright were solid performers for the Rams. Old Iggies controlled their game

Plympton and Flinders Park are eighth and seventh on the ladder respectively but avoiding relegation will be among the motivators here. Plympton could not get close enough against Old Iggies for a reasonable chance away from home to fall by 24 points. Matthew Downey, Jake Ferraro and Jack Hoad led the Bulldogs well. Flinders Park also found PHOS Camden too solid, battling away to a 50-point loss. Daniel Blythe, James Lean and Brett O’Hara played strongly for the Reds. Home ground could tip it Plympton’s way by 12-22 points. Mitcham has the bye.

Golden Grove and Athelstone look set for an absorbing contest at Harpers Field. The Kookaburras just missed against Pembroke OS last week with Bret Sparnon, Joshua Ingram and Dashiell Ravlich leading the way. Grove is under siege in fifth place but the Raggies just may have the depth by 13-25 points. Seaton Ramblers hosts Old Ignatians with both sides needing a win for different reasons, the Rams to win their first game and

against Plympton last week to win by 24 points. Joseph Pedler, Lachlan Murdoch and Thomas Kolesnik played well. Depth could be the key again with Old Iggies saluting by 25-38 points.

rough chance for finals and possible relegation could be the difference between losing and winning for Hectorville and Kenilworth this week at Daly Oval. Hectorville is ninth on the ladder with three wins, last week losing to Westminster Old Scholars by two points after leading by 16 points at the last change. Owen Giovine, Paul Wootton and Luke Broadbent were among the Hounds’ best. Kenilworth fell to Eastern Park by 33 points as Alex Buckley, Luke Gane and Blake Moser (three goals) played well. Kenilworth gets the nod here by 14-26 points. The Eastern Park and Salisbury match should be a beauty at Dwight Reserve when fourth meets top. The Demons saw good games from Ben McMullen, Rick Keen and Jaron Burke in last week’s win, while Salisbury,

on top, crushed Glenunga by 112 points – Matthew Fleming, Ryan Wood and Patrick Keenihan among the stars Salisbury by 10 to 24 points. A win for Hope Valley or Westminster Old Scholars will keep that side in touch with the top five after their meeting at Hope Valley. The Demons recorded an excellent four-point win against Kilburn last week with Jordan Liseno, Zac White and Devin Payne among the stars. Westminster OS came from 16 points down at the last change to beat Hectorville by two points with Frazer Goodes, Thomas Easton and Matthew Newman consistent players. The Demons can repeat the dose this week by 10-26 points. North Haven and Kilburn should be a beauty at Largs North Reserve. The Magpies have lost three games in a row, last week falling to Pooraka by 10 points, Zak Phillips, Aaron

Hinsley and Kailen Butler the better players. Kilburn also lost last week, to Hope Valley by four points, Cameron Williams, Cody Gill and Vince Urbancic solid performers. The Magpies to stop the rot, 10-20 points. Pooraka can hold fifth against bottom side Glenunga away. The Bulls will be buoyed by their win against North Haven last week, Dale Armstrong, Adam Nitschke and Drew Hosking starring. Dolphins, Dogs pursue double chance

C

BC OC and Rosewater will be out to remain in pursuit of the double chance this week when they come together in the East Parklands.

The Dolphins are one win from third-placed Para Hills and the Bulldogs are one and a half wins back so the winner here can continue to the chase the Big Reds for a top-three finish but the loser will find itself back competing to stay in the five. Both had compelling victories last week, especially Rosewater which upset then top side Colonel Light Gardens by 19 points while CBCOC had no trouble accounting for bottom side Woodville South by 102 points. Sam Madigan and Stephen Dubrich from the Dolphins and Dogs David Giuffreda and

Jarrad Schar can again influence the result here on Saturday.

If Bulldogs Lachlan Allison and Jeremy Borgas can continue to perform well then relegation can still be avoided but would need claim another scalp in Elizabeth this week.

Another week and top spot changes hands, with Blackfriars OS reclaiming the mantle from the Lions following their loss.

Josh Barras and Zenon Trigg of the Navy Blues must overcome a rebounding Colonel Light Gardens.

Facing the struggling Cats should ensure the Hounds hang onto top billings for another week at least.

Para Hills must respond against the Dragons to take a firmer grip on third spot.

Sam Horsell and Matthew Brincat stood out in their come-from-behind 31-point victory over Elizabeth and coach Aleks Bojanic will be encouraging a more wide spread effort this week. In few other upsets last week, Adelaide Lutheran halted Greenacres run at the top five while Pulteney stunned third-placed Para Hills to remain a slim finals prospect.

rahma Lodge and Fitzroy are clinging to the hope of playing finals; a win to either at Brahma Lodge will keep the dream alive for another week. Shane Brown was best for the Tigers in their 24-point win against Central United, while Aaron Asfaha led the way for Fitzroy in its 56-point win against Ingle Farm. Tough game to pick but the Lions may have the edge by 14-26 points. West Croydon will be looking to improve on its fourth place when it hosts bottom side Mawson Lakes this week. The Hawks had the bye last week but before that kicked an impressive 26.23 against Fitzroy. Mawson Lakes went down to Trinity Old Scholars by just a goal last week, Nathan Delbridge playing a fine game. The Hawks could get on a roll and give their percentage a boost here. The Hawks by 66-80 points. Top side Lockleys looks in for another good day when it hosts eighth side Central United. The Demons ended Smithfield’s winning run last week by 30 points with Alex Paton

standing tall. Central fell to Brahma Lodge by 24 points at home with Michael Barclay its best player. Lockleys looks on its way to another big win by 75-86 points. Trinity Old Scholars could face the wrath of Smithfield when they meet at Trinity College. The Lions fell in by six points against Mawson Lakes last week with William Wheeler best. Keen Parks face top challenge

A

refreshed Mitchell Park will be able to assess its finals prospects when meeting top side Houghton District this week.

The Lions have turned their season around over the past month to be a real threat to the Raiders’ premiership assault. Coming off the bye following an awesome 84-point victory over Angle Vale, they will not be a better position to upset the flag favourites at home. The Hydes – Travis and Jarrad – will need to monster in at the contest early while Chris Bradford and Ben Weekley must inspire a team effort as well. Houghton Districts was not taxed last week though, having a massive 187-point triumph over Flinders University, and should be just as relaxed for a more challenging encounter on Saturday. Jai McMurtrie, Josh Davis and Jay Horne continue to set the standards.

Second place is on line this week when Adelaide University hosts St Pauls OS. The Saints have handled their more seasoned opponents in two matches so far, building on the margin on each occasion, six points in round three and 20 points in round seven. They were both away though for the Blacks who will look to utilise home ground advantage this time around. Wayne Nassereddine, Jake Shotton and Ryan Browney were instigators of St Paul OS’s solid 44-point win over Salisbury West last week while Callum Reid, Toby Nihill and Alex Ireland ensured Adelaide University took the points against the Owls, winning by 17. Flinders University’s best chance to break its drought could be Saturday against the Tigers at home. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Galekovic is looking forward to the clash as a “career highlight” and gives his side a good chance of surprising the EPL Reds and giving the crowd a home victory. “Definitely we can cause an upset,” Galekovic said. “We want to go out there and get a result. You don’t play to stop them from scoring, you play to get a result and we’ll definitely do that. “We played well against Villarreal in an earlier friendly, and even though we lost 3-2 we deserved to get something from that game – we dominated for 70-75 minutes. “During the last (A-League) All Stars game no one gave us a chance against Juventus and we put on a good show there too. “It will probably be a little bit different against Liverpool and Manchester City – we are both in our pre-season. “It’s about getting our fitness levels up and trying to adapt more to our style and prepare ourselves for the season. “There a lot of upsets in preseason and we’ll go out there and give it our best shot.

“You don’t get to play against such teams all the time so it’s one of those games that you will always remember.” The Reds of the Adelaide variety will have already played a closed door practice match against fellow English Premier League heavyweight Manchester City last Wednesday on the Gold Coast. Liverpool’s first match on Australia soil will be against Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night. Jordan Henderson will lead the squad after Liverpool confirmed he will inherit the captain’s armband from Steven Gerrard, while new signings James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez have all been named. Fellow top European club sides will also be touring Australia with an International Champions Cup series beginning in Melbourne this weekend. Real Madrid, AS Roma and Manchester City play each other in three matches at the MCG over the next week when the star attractions will include arguably one of the best footballers ever Christian Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive footballer Gareth Bale, Spanish great David Silva and Italian legend Francesco Totti.

IT’s a joke THE PROSPECTIVE SON-IN-LAW WAS ASKED BY HIS GIRLFRIEND’S FATHER, “SON, CAN YOU SUPPORT A FAMILY?”

“WELL, NO SIR,” HE REPLIED. “I WAS JUST PLANNING TO SUPPORT YOUR DAUGHTER. THE REST OF YOU HAVE TO FEND FOR YOURSELVES.” THREE OLD GUYS WERE OUT WALKING. “WINDY, ISN’T IT?” ONE SAID. “NO, IT’S THURSDAY!” ANOTHER REPLIED. “SO AM I. LET’S GO GET A BEER,” THE OTHER ANSWERED. I GET ENOUGH EXERCISE JUST PUSHING MY LUCK!
