Gone is the full ground press and constant flooding and in its place a more attacking style of play. The first three rounds of the 2016 season have been far better to watch than recent years. It’s entertaining and easier for the fans to get involved in. The AFL will probably say it’s all about the rule changes that have come in this season, but they have been tinkering with the laws of the game for so long it’s about time some of them are beginning to work. No, the young coaches of today must take much of the credit for being courageous enough to implement attacking game plans. Under Alastair Clarkson we have seen a number of defensive tactics used at Hawthorn, such as ‘Clarko’s Cluster’, that have allowed them to dominate the competition. But he has still had a strong attacking mindset with the likes of ‘Buddy’ Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Jarryd Roughead, Luke Breust and Jack Gunston in his line-up.

Many coaches have not been able to combat the Hawks’ strengths and shutting them down completely has not been possible. New coaches have entered the scene like Luke Beveridge and Adam Simpson (both from the Hawthorn system) along with Alan Richardson and now Don Pyke who have not been scared to attack fire with fire. Even Phil Walsh last year was eager to bring a more attacking game plan to Adelaide as he believed the coaches had an obligation to offer an entertaining exhibition to the fans. Before him Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley knew a strong running game was the way to go but he has since been hampered by injury to key players. It has certainly gone to another level in the early stages of this season though, but will all coaches allow it to last? We can only hope so for the benefit of the game. The dour coaches of the past, the more senior generation such as Ross Lyon and Rodney Eade, recognised at the end of last year that they had to join them to succeed. However, the predicament as

THUMBS UP

seen in both of these coaches’ positions, is that having the right playing stocks are paramount.

Gold Coast has adjusted to this newer style of football with aplomb, already having a pacy young squad with the capabilities to put this game plan into action including the firepower up forward. Fremantle, on the other hand, needed to find a way to score more to achieve the ultimate reward but the current list at Lyons’ disposal doesn’t possess the skills to make it work to the same extent as other clubs in the competition. It is such a distinct change from its previous style of play that it has struggled so far with it. For success to come the Dockers’ way, they need an overhaul of their playing ranks which won’t be any quick fix. It just goes to show where the game has come in such a short time. Many have worried over the past 10 or so years about the state of play. But it was always going to go back to what we have today at some point, even without the continual rule changes by the powers that be. Let’s leave it alone now and enjoy a positive brand of football again.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

Orica-GreenEDGE cyclist Mathew Hayman became the second Australian winner of the famous Paris-Roubaix. South Australia’s Stuart O’Grady won the race called the Queen of the Classics in 2007.

Leading into the Australian Swimming Championships and Olympic trials at the Marion Swimming Centre, we really only heard one name – Grant Hackett – which was quite disappointing.

Hayman had to fight out a pulsating sprint finish with four-time winner Tom Boonen (Etixx-QuickStep), Ian Stannard (Team Sky), Sep Vanmarcke (LottoNLJumbo) and Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) at the end of the 257.5k from Compiègne to the velodrome in Roubaix after 27 sections and 52.7km of cobbles.

While the champion swimmer was trying to make a pitch for a fourth Olympic Games, all the focus was taken away from Australia’s rising up-and-comers in the sport.

“If someone had told me this morning I’d win ParisRoubaix, I wouldn’t have believed them, no way. Other years I’d dared to dream about it and in other years I felt good. This year was different. I haven’t really raced since breaking my arm (five weeks ago),” the 37 year-old said.

Now the media can let us know who we will be cheering to gold with the likes of Mitch Larkin, Cameron McEvoy, young South Australian Kyle Chalmers, Thomas Fraser Holmes, Mack Horton, David McKeon, Emma McKeon, Jessica Ashwood and Madeline Groves.

Sadly for Hackett, he didn’t achieve his goal of making the squad for Rio but he will still be going as part of the Channel Seven commentary team.

A battle of the midfields

I

t should be a midfield battle for the ages when Sydney comes to town to face the Crows this weekend.

The Swans have one of the strongest engine rooms, with the likes of Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker, Dan Hannebery, Kieran Jack and youngster Isaac Heeney, which will test the best in the AFL, let alone Adelaide. Restricting the impact they all have on the contest will be nigh on impossible but limiting their ability to get hands on the ball will be the key. The Crows’ pacy new game plan has the legs to outrun the opposition but it will be the pressure on their opponents when they have the ball that will prove vital to their chances on Saturday night at Adelaide Oval. Inhibiting the Richmond defenders last week from getting a free run from the backlines was a feature of Adelaide’s game and created so many goal-scoring opportunities on the turnover. The pressure from the Crows’ forwards will need to lift further again this week to ensure the Sydney midfielders don’t see much of the ball on the rebound. The intensity around the stoppages will be just as important. It could be game-deciding. Adelaide is number one in clearances after three rounds, both out of the centre and around the ground, so if it can maintain that position this week it will be a real contender. No side seems to be using taggers this season with fluent game styles taking precedence so far. But coach Don Pyke may have to use a runwith player alongside at least one or two of the tough Swan onballers to hinder their flow. However, who does he go to? Parker is in stellar form at the moment and has dictated much of Sydney’s ball movement in the opening weeks of the season, Hannebery has cut Adelaide up many times in the past and Kennedy gets a lot of the ball in the clinches. Saturday night also sees the return of Kurt Tippett to Adelaide Oval for the first time since his contentious departure three years ago so fans are sure to make him feel welcome. Tippett was at his damaging best when the sides met in Sydney last year but emotions were still high among the Crows’ travelling contingent and the Swans were spurred on at home by recent Adam Goodes’ controversies. It’s a different game this week as Adelaide looks to show its improvement against one of the top sides in the competition.

Pyke may be tempted to add greater midfield body strength to counter the Swans with Cam Ellis-Yolmen a prime candidate.

The club’s next five weeks will show where it has come under the early tenure of Pyke and where further development is needed.

Port Adelaide got the win it needed last week.

The Crows meet Hawthorn in a Friday night away blockbuster, Fremantle, Western Bulldogs and Geelong in another Friday night blockbuster but this time at home after facing Sydney this week in a period which will define their season.

The Power though will have been working on their skill level and ball movement even more during the week, with a trip to Canberra ahead to tackle an inspired GWS Giants.

Late withdrawal from the Richmond game Tom Lynch will return to Adelaide’s forward structure, probably at the expense of his inclusion Riley Knight.

Footy footnotes It was a great round of footy last weekend which had it all - exciting games, intense drama, added controversies and sad endings! • As we know Crow Tom Lynch chose to fly home from Melbourne last Saturday to be with his partner at the birth of their second child and miss the victory against Richmond (albeit a round three clash), but Adelaide United skipper Eugene Galekovic was asked this week what he’d do if the Reds made the grand final and his pregnant wife went into labour, “I think I’d pop into the hospital (pause) straight after the game” was his response • By the way, Lynch welcomed a daughter to his family (he already has a three year-old son) who has been named Tayla – getting in good with the captain, there Tom • Retired Swans stars Adam Goodes and Mike Pyke were finally given their ‘lap of honour’ to farewell home fans at the SCG last Saturday but they seemed to be missing something as they were made to do it by foot – obviously couldn’t find the Hilux • Cat Jimmy Bartel could be a hairy beast by the end of the season – through a domestic violence campaign which is close to his heart, Bartel will not shave or get a haircut for the entire season • Score reviews continue to be a joke – Kangaroo Todd Goldstein appeared to take the ball across the goal line during the match against Melbourne but due to poor camera angles, it was inconclusive so a resulting goal was awarded – the Demons only lost by five points too • In the same game, a blood rule send-off with only minutes remaining revealed implications with the new interchange cap rule with Kangaroo forward Drew Petrie forced from the ground to be cleaned up

It wasn’t pretty but it had to bounce back after a lacklustre Showdown performance.

Hamish Hartlett and Chad Windgard back will help in that area but it will be the side’s mental approach to the game that will determine whether it achieves a favourable outcome. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN allowing a player to replace him but he could not return because North had used its full allocation of 90 interchanges for the game – this is silly, the player sent off should be able to return to the field without any impact on the cap numbers or this could be exploited further • Last week Sportsbeat mentioned ex-Sun Joel Wilkinson’s code shift into the NFL – well Gold Coast has confirmed its own signing of a former NFL player coming its way – former Buffalo Bill wide receiver Brandon Kaufman, who stands 196cm tall, has been added to the Suns’ Rookie list as an international scholarship player • Spanish soccer star Cesc Fabregas won’t be code hopping anytime soon though – the Chelsea midfielder came across the Western derby at five in the morning in England last weekend and snapchatted vision of the game with the question, “Anyone know what sport this is?” • At 32, Dane Swan’s leg and foot fractures could sound the end to his playing career at the Magpies while the Collingwood hierarchy could make the decision for the out-of-contract Brownlow medallist but his father has come out this week urging his son to play on provided there are no longterm problems • It is also hoped we did not see the end of a much-loved Bulldog’s playing career – Robert Murphy is probably the most endeared player in the competition among teammates, opposition and past players alike so watching him succumb to at least a season-ending knee injury was heartfelt by the whole of the AFL including supporters of all clubs – good luck with the rehabilitation Bob, hopefully we see you back next year and wouldn’t begrudge you holding the trophy as a premiershipwinning captain upon your return

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 4

BY DION HAYMAN

WEST COAST V RICHMOND

BRISBANE V GOLD COAST

Richmond and West Coast have been evenly matched in recent seasons. The sides have shared four wins apiece from their last eight matches. It was West Coast, though, that prevailed in their only clash last season by 20 points at the MCG in round 12. The Eagles won 13.12 (90) to 10.10 (70) with three goals from Josh Kennedy while Dustin Martin booted three for the Tigers. Curiously, the last four games between these sides have all been won by the visitors. Richmond has won its last two games against the Eagles in Perth – by 41 points in 2013 and by 17 points in 2014. The Eagles’ last home win against Richmond was in 2012 when they won a high-scoring game by 57 points. Overall, West Coast leads 24 wins to 16 while at Subiaco, the home side leads 13 wins to four.

Gold Coast has won its last two games against Brisbane, completing its first double last season over the Lions in the Q-Clash. The Suns won by 64 points at Carrara in round five, 18.10 (118) to 7.12 (54), after six goals from Charlie Dixon. Scores were level at quarter-time but the Suns launched themselves towards victory with five goals to one in the second term. They then doubled their money at the Gabba in round 19, beating the Lions by 14 points, 17.12 (114) to 14.16 (100). The Lions led by two points at quarter-time and trailed by just one point at the main break but the Suns scored 11 goals to eight in the second half. Brisbane still leads six wins to four and four wins to two at the Gabba.

CARLTON V WESTERN BULLDOGS

Geelong has dominated Essendon in recent seasons winning 13 of their last 15 games since 2004. It’s the Cats’ most sustained run of success against the Bombers in their history and includes a club record six straight wins between 2006-10. Essendon last beat Geelong in 2011 by four points at Docklands. Before that, the Bombers won by 13 points at the same ground in 2005. The two sides meet twice this season after five consecutive years of one-off games. Geelong has won the last four by 67, 28, nine and 69 points, all at Docklands. Last year in round 10, the Cats won 19.8 (122) to 7.11 (53) with four goals each from Tom Hawkins, Steve Johnson and Steve Motlop. They haven’t met at the MCG since 2010. Essendon hasn’t beaten Geelong there since round one, 2002.

Carlton and the Western Bulldogs have traded wins in their last five clashes and it was the Bulldogs who won their only meeting last year in round 14 at Docklands by 11 points. The Bulldogs trailed by three points at half-time but scored five goals to three in the second half to win a low-scoring affair 9.10 (64) to 7.11 (53). Jake Stringer scored three of the Dogs’ nine goals. It was the lowest scoring game between these sides since the Blues suffered a dirty day at the Whitten Oval in 1991, losing 8.9 (57) to 1.10 (16). Carlton had won their previous clash in 2014 by 28 points at the same ground. The Bulldogs last won back-to-back games against Carlton in 2010-11. The sides have now met 12 times at Docklands with the Bulldogs leading seven wins to five.

HAWTHORN V ST KILDA

Hawthorn has gone six games unbeaten and recorded five straight wins against St Kilda – its longest winning streak against the Saints since its club record 20 straight wins between 1979-89. The sides drew at Docklands in 2010. St Kilda last beat the Hawks when they were reigning premiers in Launceston in 2009 by 25 points. It was a day when Stephen Milne and Adam Schneider both booted three goals while Buddy Franklin was held scoreless – a feat that’s happened only twice since 2006! (The other time was playing for Sydney against Hawthorn last year.) That Launceston game is their only previous meeting at the ground. The Saints once played some home games in Launceston and have five wins from nine games at the ground.

Sydney has won its last four games against Adelaide which is a current club record, beating its three straight wins from 1994-95. Amazingly, the sides meet just once in the premiership season for the 11th year in a row. They last met twice in 2005 when the Crows won both games. They also met twice in 2012 but the second meeting was in a final won by Sydney. That was the first of the Swans’ four straight wins which have all been conclusive, by 29, 77, 63 and 52 points. Last year, Sydney won 17.15 (117) to 9.11 (65) at the SCG with three goals apiece from Kurt Tippett, Lance Franklin and Dan Hannebery. Their only previous meeting at Adelaide Oval was in round three, 2014 when Sydney scored 12 goals to four after half-time to win 21.8 (134) to 9.17 (71). Luke Parker and Franklin both scored four goals that day. The Crows last beat the Swans in 2012 at the SCG by five points.

GWS GIANTS V PORT ADELAIDE

Sunday 12.40pm, StarTrack Oval Port Adelaide has won its last four games in a row against GWS after a shock first-up defeat at the Sydney Showgrounds in 2012. The Giants won that game by 34 points after scoring eight goals to four after half-time. However since then, Port has recorded four fairly comfortable victories – by 56 points at Football Park in 2013 and by 75 points at the Showgrounds later that year; by 35 points at Manuka Oval in 2014 and by 21 points last year at Adelaide Oval. They had to come from behind though in their most recent clash, trailing by two points at the last change. Goals to John Butcher, Angus Monfries and Chad Wingard in the first 10 minutes of the final term calmed the home side’s nerves and it went on to win 16.15 (111) to 13.12 (90).

COLLINGWOOD V MELBOURNE Sunday 2.50pm, MCG

Collingwood and Melbourne meet again in their traditional Queen’s Birthday clash in June but also get in early here in round four at the MCG. That last happened in 2010 when just one point separated the sides over two games – a one-point win for Collingwood preceding a drawn game on the holiday. The Magpies then peeled off five straight wins in this fixture, repeating their run of success from 2007-10, before they were stunned by the Demons in their last meeting last year. That was in round 18 when Melbourne led at every change on their way to a 37-point win, 13.13 (91) to 7.12 (54). Bernie Vince and Jesse Hogan both scored three goals in the Demons’ biggest win over Collingwood since 2006. It was also Collingwood’s lowest score against Melbourne since 1988.

NORTH MELBOURNE V FREMANTLE Sunday 4.10pm, Etihad Stadium

Even stevens describes Fremantle and North Melbourne. Of their last four games, they’ve won two apiece. Of their last eight, they’ve won four apiece. Of their last 16 games, they’ve won eight apiece. Naturally enough, the sides traded blows last season. Fremantle won by 73 points at home in round eight with Michael Walters scoring four goals as the Dockers won 17.13 (115) to North 5.12 (42). North kicked just 0.6 in the final term. In round 21, it was North moving towards sewing up a finals berth with an 11-point win, 14.10 (94) to 12.11 (83). Brent Harvey scored four goals for the winners. Overall, the Kangaroos are well clear 16 wins to 10 and they also lead comfortably five wins to one at Docklands.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 4

BY CHRIS KENDALL

NORWOOD V GLENELG

WEST ADELAIDE V STURT

Both teams resume from the bye after vastly contrasting roundtwo encounters. Norwood appeared very flat and unresponsive in a heavy defeat at the hands of a North outfit recording its first win in 12 months. Glenelg’s sound start to the season continued when thrashing reigning premier West Adelaide, characterised by an even team effort across the board which should have brought smiles to a frustrated Tiger faithful. The last meeting between the teams was a dominant win for Glenelg, and there are some similarities between the formlines leading into this week. While the Redlegs were impressive defeating Port in round one, there were some worrying signs against North which raise some questions about the collective hunger of the playing group. If they allow Glenelg to use its outside speed and quick ball movement illustrated against West, then the upset is on the cards. But the home team should just hold the edge.

It is difficult to reconcile West’s opening three rounds when compared to the same poise and precision which carried it to the 2015 premiership. A number of senior players appear hesitant and are moving the ball tentatively into an attack lacking the unpredictability of last season. Sturt was highly impressive after quarter time against Central to record its opening win of 2016 in a great filip to the youngest playing list in the league. No reigning premier has opened the season with three consecutive losses of greater than 70 points. It is difficult to see how the Bloods can spark their defence into gear unless they can rediscover their faith in each other with ball movement and adhering to the game plan. The Double Blues took their chances last week and reaped the rewards and it is worth noting that West’s opening three opponents have had a considerable pace edge. It is difficult to see West continuing the slump for long, but is equally hard to tip them until they win one.

Match of the round at Elizabeth, with the Bulldogs aiming to rebound from a disappointing loss to Sturt last week. After a sound first quarter Central kicked only five goals to 11 after the first change which spelled trouble for Roy Laird’s charges. It was a particularly disappointing second half after its round-one thumping of North. South’s stunning start to 2016 continued with a big win against West Adelaide, led by Brett Eddy’s eight goals and a number of top performances by some of its second-tier brigade. It is many of these next level players, such as Rigby Barnes, Sam Overall and Cameron DeVisser who have been the early key to South’s success. This will be the challenge for Laird and the coaching staff to limit their effectiveness. The wide expanses at Elizabeth should suit both teams, and while the Bulldogs are particularly adept at using the spaces to their advantage, South has improved its recent record at the venue of the past couple of seasons. A toss of the coin, but it is hard to ignore the Panthers form.

The Eagles were excellent for the opening three quarters against the Adelaide Reserves last week, but the fitness edge told for the Crows as they swamped the home team. Coach Michael Godden noted post game that he was very happy with the effort, despite the result, and it was a solid response to their previous week’s loss to South. North’s second quarter against Port proved the problem, conceding 10 goals to zero en route to a 43-point loss which still showed plenty of encouraging signs for the Roosters. It was one of the simplest equations last week for the Eagles, with their first half largely about keeping the ball out of Adelaide’s hands. At half time, seven of the top eight possession getters on the ground were the blue, green and gold. It will be interesting this week to see if Godden adopts a similar style against North. Closing down the space for the Roosters to work will be a key here as Josh Carr’s men have shown they can get a quick run-on when allowed some freedom. Overall, however, the Eagles should hold the edge.

Van Gisbergen loving early days with Red Bull

hane van Gisbergen doesn’t mind a scrap and enjoyed a tight tussle with reigning V8 Supercar champion Mark Winterbottom in the last round in Tasmania.

pumped – that’s how the racing should be.”

The Red Bull recruit hopes it continues as it will mean he’s fighting for podium finishes up the front of the grid and in turn a possible championship.

“From a driver’s point of view, I think what they’ve done with the formats this year (helps).

He is loving his new Holden at his new team which is giving him a good chance to compete alongside the frontrunners of the V8 Supercars series. “It was on the edge, but I loved it,” van Gisbergen said of giving Winterbottom a taste of his own medicine at Symmons Plains.

Known for his aggressive and flamboyant style, the Kiwi driver attributed the tough racing to the new format and tyre allocation for 2016.

“Giving soft tyres and more tyres, you have that confidence to pass and to race, knowing you can come in grab more tyres and go again. “It’s not conservation racing anymore; you’re flat out the whole way, which is what drivers and people want to see.”

“He gave me a couple of rubs, and I gave him some back and it was just hard fought racing.

The 26 year-old showed dominant form across both days of the Tasmanian leg but got caught out on spilled oil and slid off during the Sunday race.

“I went and saw him after the race and we both shook hands, we were both pretty

group, scoring 27 goals without conceding but Postecoglou says he isn’t daunted by the draw.

The Blue Samurai has been drawn as the Socceroos headline opponent in a group including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Thailand.

“As Champions of Asia we will show due respect to all countries but stay focussed on continuing our journey that has aspirations greater than simply qualifying for the World Cup,” he said from Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday night.

While three trips to the Middle East won’t please national team coach Ange Postecoglou, the AsianCup-winning coach is confident of finishing in the top two of the group and progressing to the 2018 tournament in Russia.

“Over the last two years we have built up a very strong portfolio of information on most Asian nations and its players by having scouts at matches and tournaments all over Asia so the players go into every match well prepared.”

Australia avoids Asian Cup finalists Korea in the draw, which will play off in Group B with Iran, Uzbekistan, China, Qatar and Syria.

Socceroos striker Tim Cahill, who plies his trade in the Chinese Super League, said the draw would be a slog.

Since memorably beating Japan at the 2006 World Cup, the two sides have faced each other in two World Cup qualifying campaigns. But it’s been seven years since the Socceroos last triumphed over them, a 2-1 win at the MCG.

“The only good thing is I won’t be responsible for knocking China out,” he told Fox Sports.

he was getting used to managing the contest within the team. Van Gisbergen is looking forward to a return to Phillip Island this weekend and putting behind him a controversial clash with David Reynolds in the last meeting on the island which effectively ended Reynold’s championship bid. He sits seventh in the championship standings, 70 points behind leader Will Davison who was gifted the lead after Van Gisbergen and Winterbottom spun out allowing Davison through for a breakthrough victory in the TECKNO Autosport’s Holden. History will be made at Phillip Island this weekend with the 500th round of Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercars Championship. Whincup will aim to bring up 100 Championship race wins. He is on 98 wins and needs to win both races this weekend to become the second driver behind Lowndes to bring up the ton. Lowndes, though, is the most successful driver at Phillip Island, claiming 11 race wins across the past two decades, including two of three at last year’s round.

FOOTY NEWS OFFICIAL NEWS ON THE AMATEUR LEAGUE

The Norwood Division 1 Falcons hungry to go one better

P

ayneham Norwood Union may have overachieved last year in making the Division 1 grand final but that still makes it hungrier to succeed this season. Under the distinguished tenure of coach Garry McIntosh, the Falcons have only strived to be the best within whatever level they are competing. They have added further forward line strength with former Norwood premiership player Liam Davis entering an already formidable structure. Fellow ex-Redleg Michael Ialeggio could be an explosive midfielder at this level but big man Cameron Milne will be a big loss, moving to Canberra. Goodwood Saints may fall back into the pack this year with a number of premiership players leaving. Most notable are onballers Jesse Boundy, Luke Donaldson and Ben Holzbauer, forward Addison Burns, and ruckmen Angus Clarke, Daniel Wakelin and Mark Paget. Tea Tree Gully finished minor premier last year but couldn’t manage a grand final berth, losing the preliminary final to Payneham Norwood Union. The Gullies have kept the nucleus of that side, except tall forward Josh Bollmeyer, so should be a challenger again, under coach Mitch Sandery.

Cobb will have learnt what is required to rectify that so expect a threatening Henley this season. Christian Bock has returned to the club but Jeremy Johncock, Jamie Grosser and Brad Mehaffey have exited. Rostrevor OC wasn’t among the top sides last year, succumbing at the elimination final stage, but should be back among the top echelon this season. Former SAAFL State coach Sean Jackson, who has achieved success at SANFL reserves level at both Sturt and the Eagles, takes the reins from premiership-winning coach Tom Wigley Dual Division 1 medallist Craig Holm and ruck Michael Aloisi have been welcomed back while Tullio Dematteis and Scott Littler, who have both played a couple of league games for Norwood, are new additions. Those outside the top five last year in Port District, Adelaide University and Salisbury North will be eager to push harder for a finals spot this season. Jeremy Clayton and John Paynter remain at the helms of the Magpies and the Blacks respectively while former Central District player Gavin Chaplin will guide the Hawks towards elusive success.

Kym Cobb is back to elevate Henley to flag contender.

Prince Alfred OC and Unley Mercedes Jets will take on the top echelon this year after being elevated from Division 2.

The Sharks had a tight tussle with the four top sides last year during the minor round but fell out of the finals quickly.

Former Glenelg, West Adelaide, North Adelaide and Carlton player Brett Backwell is hoping for big things from the Reds in his

Tight race for Div. 2 honours

I

t is going to be a tight race for the premiership in Division 2 this season with practically all sides looking pretty even.

Andrew Jarman is back at the helm of Gaza and will be hoping to achieve what he did when last at the club which is return it to the top flight of the competition. The Eagles won the 2000 Division 2 flag under Jarman and he felt the time was right to try and do it all again. Trent Hill, from Walkerville, is a handy pick-up with his pace and skill which will counter the loss of similar type Byron Sumner but losing ball magnets John Boxer and Garth van Ristell to the Barossa Light and Gawler Football Association leaves a hole. Mark Moody takes control of Portland’s aspirations to return to Division 1 as well. They have lost Brett Pederson and Adam Pepe

to other local clubs.

SHOC has boosted its playing stocks with Lachlan Button joining from SANFL club Glenelg, Henry Spurling is back and possibly Jack Fosdike returning too from the Hills League.

SMOSH West Lakes has made an interesting appointment to its head coaching position to steer its fortunes up the ladder this season.

Nathan Grainger will again guide Modbury with success knocking and he welcomes back experienced Todd Stanton to the club.

After a number of years coaching in the northern suburbs at Elizabeth, Brahma Lodge and Eastern Park, Carey Payne has ventured west to lead the Lions.

Wayne Weidemann and Ian Steel both continue at Broadview and Scotch OC respectively.

It is much the status quo for other clubs at this level as far as coaching ranks are concerned. Trevor Hill at St Peters OC and Adam Marling at Sacred Heart OC will be hoping it is just one year down here after being relegated from Division 1 last season. SPOC will need to find new bookends though with their attacking spearhead Henry Hardy moving to Victoria and key defenders Benjamin Kilsby, a premiership-winning captain, and James Franklin also departing to country leagues.

Red, Rams set to flex muscles

F

irst-round winners Flinders Park and Seaton Ramblers will be aiming to maintain their good start to the season when they clash at Flinders Park on Saturday. The Reds hit the scoreboard hard against Kilburn to chalk up 43 scoring shots (19.24) in their 76-point win. Lee Allmond, Daniel Blythe and Kieran Johanson were among the stars for Flinders Park. Seaton Ramblers also had plenty of good moments in beating Plympton by 51 points last week at home. The Rams haven’t enjoyed much success recently seasons but produced a solid game with Callan Annett, Sean Coard and Saverio Trimboli (three goals) among the best. Tough game at home but it could be the Reds by 14-28 points. Kilburn and Walkerville will hope to hit back after both lost last week. The Chics could not manage Finders Park in their 76-point loss

with Jason Sandercock, Scott Galbraith and Matthew Whelan leading the way. Walkerville lost to Mitcham by seven points after leading by 13 points at half time. Tom Sinclair, Thomas Kowald (five goals) and Jed Woolford (three goals) played solid games. The Cats, away from home, by 10-22 points. Gepps Cross and Mitcham meet at Duncan Fraser Reserve with mixed results coming. The Rams were crushed by Pembroke Old Scholars by 125 points at Haslam Oval. Brett Evans, Zac Muir and Joshua Matthews battled hard for the undermanned Rams. Mitcham produced a solid second half to beat Walkerville by seven points after trailing by 21 points at quarter time. Daniel Hardy, Peter Zarantonello and Ben Geytenbeek (five goals) led the way. On firstround form it looks the Hawks by 16-26 points. Pembroke Old Scholars hosts Golden Grove

Nine News Division 4 Dragons keen to put heat on Demons

W

estminster Old Scholars is set to try its new-found depth when it takes on Hope Valley at Glandore Oval on Saturday. The Demons finished strongly to beat Pooraka by 21 points at home after trailing by five points at half time and 12 points at the last change. Ben Fisher was a key player with five goals, while Matthew Newman and Matthew Reid were fine players. Rhys French (four goals) and Craig Tasborski (five goals) also were effective. Hope Valley could not keep pace with Colonel Light Gardens after half time, going down by 56 points at home. The Demons saw good games from Jamie Dowling, Zac White and Daniel Williamson. Westminster looks to have the edge this week by 16-28 points. North Haven and Edwardstown clash at Largs North Reserve in what should be an intriguing match. It would be many years since the clubs have met at amateur level, if

at all. The Magpies fell to Eastern Park last week by 75 points after a reasonable first half. Ryan Adams, Mark Cocchiaro and Zak Phillips were among the best for North Haven. Edwardstown had the bye last week and before that lost to Colonel Light Gardens by nine points after giving up an early four-goal lead. Very hard to line up this game but Towns should have the players to get home by 16-26 points. Pooraka and Kenilworth will be desperate for a win after losing both games this season. The Bulls looked good for three quarters against Westminster Old Scholars before dropping off in the last quarter. Kye Vandermoer provided a shining light with seven goals, while Dale Armstrong and Chris Adams were solid. Kenilworth found Salisbury’s power too much to handle last week at St Marys Park, crashing by 47 points. Henry Moss, Luke Gane and Shaun Clarke were among the better players for the Kookaburras. Hard to go past Pooraka this week by 22-38 points.

Salisbury and Eastern Park should produce an excellent contest at Salisbury Oval. The Magpies won easily last week against Kenilworth with Matthew Hargreaves, Brad Horjus (five goals) and Shaun Rowe among the key movers. Eastern Park was ultra impressive in its opening game last week after a bye in round one, crunching North Haven by 75 points at home. Ricky Butler was outstanding with three goals, while Ashley Clifton, Paul Jones and Shawn Mansell (six goals) played strongly. A flip of the coin but Eastern Park looks a big chance by 10-22 points. Nine News Division 5

Lockleys ready to scare a few A fter two impressive performances to open the season, Lockleys have given the rest of Division 5 an early warning that it has a bigger target it is aiming at.

The Demons sit pretty on top but their hopes for a promising season will be scrutinised this week when they make the trip to Smithfield for the match-of-the-round. The Panthers are also 2-0 and many believe will be the main title hope here alongside Blackfriars OS. However, Lockleys will be eager to show that it shouldn’t be underestimated for higher honours but it must mix it with the big boys, starting on Saturday. For the second week in a row, Callan Buchecker was prominent while Kade Boase and Sean Stormonth ably assisted in driving home their side’s advantage and record a solid 43-point victory over Glenunga. Smithfield had Pulteney’s measure from the opening bounce and if not for a drop-off in

the last term could have grown its percentage further, winning by 27 points after being up by 50 points at the final break.

Jayden Fry, Mitchell Bilsborrow and Jarrad Clark-Rantatsa from Greenacres won’t be easy their opposition though.

Corey Clark put in another best afield effort while Scott Webber and Mark Garner were granted worthy mentions.

Hectorville will be ruing missed opportunities in the last term and failing to reel in Blackfriars OS in the finish.

Greenacres and Rosewater bounced back quickly from round one losses to win well second-up.

The college Hounds maintained their winning record but they will need to improve when facing the big guns over coming weeks.

The Dragons were most convincing in delivering a comprehensive 88-point defeat to Elizabeth while the Bulldogs held firm against CBCOC to pull off an 11-point triumph at home.

They host Glenunga on Saturday while Hectorville heads to Elizabeth.

In Rosewater’s favour is that it is home again for a third consecutive week and will give their weekend opponent’s another strong showing on Saturday. New coach Ricky Pearce has them playing well with Josh Taylor proving a focal point up forward and Jonathan Mahney and Dylan Frank tough at the contest.

The Hawks are second with two wins, last week beating Woodville South by 22 points with Tim Horsman, Corey Widdison and Gary Sumpton starring. The Bulldogs lost to Ingle Farm last week by 81 points, Karl Grocke, Ben Noll and Scott Babolka playing well. The Hawks by 48-64 points. It’s another clash of lions with Fitzroy and Mitchell Park, both winless, looking to roar. Fitzroy fell to Trinity OS by 10 goals last week with Mathew Simister, James Smart and Lee Makris best. ALDI Division 7 Early flying Jets

U

nley Mercedes Jets has flown into Division 7 and got their season off to the flying start to state their arrival.

The Jets dictated terms from the outset against first round winner Flinders University under the guidance of Alex Borghesan, Ross Pickering and Stuart Patterson.

The Crabs had no answers, going down by 32 points. On Saturday, Unley Mercedes is away to face St Pauls OS which notched a hard-earned victory over Central United last week. Josh Maggs, Tim Hennekam and Ben Clarke stayed calm to help their side hold on for a fighting seven-point triumph. The Jets should be able to make it 2-0 to highlight their credentials for success this season. The Bulldogs meet Payneham Norwood Union at Paynehan on Saturday with both sides the only 0-2 outfits after two weeks of competition. The Falcons realised that they will encounter some tough opposition at this level following a hammering from Prince Alfred OC. The Reds took control after quarter-time

winning by 59 points in the finish. Oliver Collison, Jack Steer and Charles Comerford showed that Prince Alfred OC is well spread with talent this year and will be a major contender. It heads across the road from their training ground to Park 10 – the home of Adelaide University – on Saturday The Blacks found out the hard way that Salisbury West will be tough to beat. The Tigers limited the Blacks to five goals for the match and only two up to three quartertime to win by 53 points. Alec Maidment, Dustyn Bow and Andrew Curyer of Salisbury West will be keen to display similar form against North Pines this week. The Redbacks, coming off the bye, will be tested. IT’s a joke A BURNT OUT ADVERTISING EXECUTIVE decides he’s had enough of the rat race and buys a property in the country with no electricity, no phones and no company. One afternoon he sees the dust coming up way in the distance from which a battered Holden ute pulls up and a crusty old bushie gets out. “Hello mate, I’m your closest neighbour, live about 20km up the road, thought we’d chuck ya a bash to welcome you to the area,” he said. “Sounds great,” the ad-man replied, starting to get a bit bored on his own. “I hear you city boys like your drugs and drink so we’ll get that in for ya,” the neighbour said. “Sounds awesome,” the ad-man says. “We tend to get a bit punchie and horny ‘round here after all those drugs and drink though, can ya handle yerself if a blue breaks out or if a bit of sex was on the cards?” the neighbour asked. “I go alright,” the ad-man responded. “This all sounds great, what time should I come and what should I wear?” “Doesn’t really matter,” the bushie declared. “It’s only going to be you and me.”

10. Who was labelled as having “choked” at the Masters?

THREE POINT PLAYS 11. Which Adelaide Thunderbird suffered an horrific knee injury last weekend against the Vixens? 12. Which banned Bomber has not been allowed to watch his son play Under-18s games? 15. Who scored a hat-trick last week against Arsenal in the EPL?

FOUR POINT BONUS 16. What is the name of the Harlem Globetrotters’ long time rivals and perennial victims? 17. Who is the A-League’s top scorer this season? 18. Which team won the NCAA US College basketball championship with a buzzer beater? 19. What has been abandoned for English county cricket matches this season?

FIVE POINT EXTRA 20. The term ‘Mankad’ was named after Indian Vinoo Mankad who infamously ran out which Australian batsman at the bowler’s end in 1947?
