e have just gone through an election campaign about “jobs and growth” but you perhaps wouldn’t know it in New South Wales.

The decision by that state’s government to ban greyhound racing is staggering and certainly didn’t take people’s jobs into consideration. Instead it accepted the findings of a report from a Special Commission’s inquiry that there was “widespread cruelty” in the industry. However, it seemed heavily weighted in favour of animal welfare lobbyists with little insight into what the majority of people in the industry were doing. It has stretched the wrongs of a small few to give the whole greyhound racing industry a bad name, implicating many not involved in the indiscretions discovered last year and who do their best for their dogs. It is disappointing that the government has made such a strong stance to ban the sport altogether without consulting possible means of rectifying the issues at hand. Its willingness to end careers

rather than making an effort to clean the industry of the minority bad elements is disapointing. It now has other states querying their own greyhound racing industry but fortunately for now they have not followed suit. There may be a few full-time greyhound trainers in Australia as a whole but most are parttime, hobby trainers with other resources to fall back on. What about the other people working within the industry, though?

Job losses will be severely felt in the areas of administration, catering and also wagering which employs 2000 full-time and about 8000 on a part-time basis in NSW alone. Consider the ramifications of a national ban – no government should make those calls on jobs, especially at this time. It would seem an estimated figure on animal cruelty was being favoured over what the human toll would be from banning the sport. Overall, this is an industry with more good people than bad which really needs fostering, not thrown into the too hard basket.

THUMBS UP

With the controversy surrounding Australia’s topranked tennis players hopefully we have a new star on the horizon to soon cheer.

BEATBOX Heavy penalties needed to be handed out to weed out the bad apples. The decision is really hard to fathom, anyway, as banning greyhound racing will actually result in more of what the Animal Welfare lobbyists least desire, that being the destroying of thousands, perhaps 10s of thousands, of dogs in New South Wales. Isn’t this more concerning? A majority of people in the industry do the utmost in caring for their dogs while greyhound adoption programs have placed thousands of retired animals into loving family homes which will continue within a well-managed industry. It is even an industry that provides an income for its respective governments – $90 million into the NSW economy alone. By banning it, further questions will be raised about where future revenue will come. It is even giving credence to the Animal Welfare groups to push their agendas further into other racing fields such as horse racing, especially jumps racing. It can be very dangerous giving strength to minority outfits. Hopefully the states stand firm and work with their own greyhound racing boards to flourish a much valued industry. THUMBS Down

A world record deadlift “nearly kills” English strongman.

He may not have won the junior Wimbledon title but Aussie teenager Alex De Minaur still did us proud, falling just short in the final to fifth seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov.

While Eddie Hall became the first man to deadlift 500 kilograms at the World Deadlift Championships last weekend, he collapsed to the floor and began bleeding from the nose in front of a raucous home Leeds crowd.

His disappointment will spur him on to higher honours we are sure as he looks towards the US Open boy’s single before transitioning to the professional ranks.

“The pressure on my body was surreal. I passed out after. I had nose bleeds. It’s not healthy doing something like that,” he said after achieving the feat in front of Arnold Schwarzenagger.

Scotsman Andy Murray finished the hero of Britain once again, claiming his second All-England grasscourt crown while American Serena Williams equals Steffi Graf’s 22 grand slam victories, only Australian Margaret Court is ahead with 24.

“But I’ve done it. I’m sure it will be in the history books for a very long time...Like the first man on the moon, the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Now I’m the first to deadlift half a ton.”

Defence blossoming W hat was once considered a weakness is turning into a strength for Adelaide.

Still young in years and experience but the Crows’ defence has improved remarkably over the season and is proving a driving force as to why the side is currently positioned inside the top four. With much of the side’s run coming from its strong rebounding defensive actions, Adelaide has become a side difficult to contain across the park.

The key to its rise has been the tightening up on opposition forwards one-on-one and restricting their fluency while also having the confidence to run off their opponents when required to assist teammates and provide an option to begin creative ball movement into attack. They have also been settled down back this year, growing with maturity. Each player is defying their age and experience. Further improvement is still well ahead of them with the likes of Jake Lever (20 years-old and 27 games), Rory Laird (22 and 68), Luke Brown (23 and 83), Brodie Smith (24 and 112) and Kyle Cheney (26 and 68) blossoming in their roles together. The older statesman in Daniel Talia is still young as well at just 24 and 113 games but he marshals an understanding group that has melded into a close-knit unit this season. When injury does break the mould, Ricky Henderson has proven to be a more than worthy inclusion. Every member of the Crows back six knows their job and undertakes it with aplomb. While there has been much talk about Adelaide’s midfield run and pressure along with striking forward structure and dynamic scoring ability, strong defences in recent years have been what win premierships so things are developing well. The defence will certainly be called upon again this week when Collingwood comes to Adelaide on Saturday night following an impressive performance itself to defeat an imposing GWS Giants away last week. It saw burdened forward Travis Cloke re-find some touch too and gave coach Nathan Buckley’s troops valuable confidence leading into its trip to Adelaide this week. This could be a tricky poser for the Crows if they allow it when every game is crucial to their top four aspirations. One would expect them to be on song for well-respected midfielder Scott Thompson’s

300th game but this clash will present some challenges that were perhaps not envisioned a few weeks ago. Paul Seedsman should return to face his old side for the first time which will probably be at the expense of Henderson. In future weeks, though, Thompson may need an added rest while Charlie Cameron and Taylor Walker may be given an extra freshen up in preparation for the finals as well. Young draftees Tom Doedee and Harrison Wigg are showing signs of their readiness to debut in the big league but there is too much at stake at present. It may be hard to believe but Port Adelaide’s finals hopes are not totally over just yet.

While its next opponent North Melbourne remains in freefall, the Power’s chances of seeing

Footy footnotes Umpiring and concussion continue to be in the news but this week even Pokemon infiltrated the AFL. • Watching Power midfielder Hamish Hartlett stagger around not knowing where he was and then being interviewed at half-time and allowed to play out the game was not a good look for the AFL’s strong concerns around head injuries – meanwhile teammate Brad Ebert had an early night after coming back to earth from a marking contest with a thud and started coughing up blood so was sent to hospital for precautionary checks but rumour suggests his mother went down to the changerooms at the main break to see if he was coming back on in the second half • #FreeKickHawthorn #FreeKickBulldogs was back in vogue last week – what would happen if they made the grand final together? • AFL umpires boss Hayden Kennedy gave the tick of approval to Saturday night’s controversial holding the ball decision against Richmond’s Reece Conca suggesting the fans don’t understand the rule – with no prior opportunity (which seems to be gone from the game these days), if that’s holding the ball then it’s a blight on our once great game • Disappointing that Hawk Sam Mitchell iterated on Talking Footy on Monday night that sledging Swan Kieran Jack after last week’s family feud was not off limits when their sides meet on Thursday night

September action remain a distinct possibility. Beat the Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, they will return to being only two wins behind the once 9-0 outfit which faces a difficult run home. Their last six matches are against Collingwood, St Kilda, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Sydney and GWS Giants. Lose three or more of those then Port Adelaide could pinch eighth spot at the death. However, this week is the critical one for both sides. If the Power loses, their season will be over, but win away then they face GWS Giants, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Gold Coast to keep the pressure on the Kangaroos. Brett Ebert must undergo an assessment on a bruised lung before being given the go ahead for Saturday’s encounter while Sam Gray put his hand up in the SANFL last week for a recall. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN • Further on Sydney, the club has announced a contract extension for coach John Longmire until the end of 2020 which will see him at the helm into a 10th season • Is Geelong treading more lightly with Mitch Clark following his derogatory remarks about teammate Mitch Duncan’s girlfriend to her brother Teia Miles who happened to be playing for an opposition side last weekend because of his sensitive mental health issues? • Collingwood onballer Taylor Adams was a tad concerned when he saw the club’s injury list which indicated he would be out for 102 weeks with his hamstring strain – he tweeted, “Doc Bradshaw has some explaining to do” – we suggest he gets a second opinion but in reality it was just a simple typo that should have read 1-2 weeks – he will miss this week’s clash against the Crows though • Former Magpie and Kangaroos Sav Rocca this week described his experience of fitting into the NFL at the Philadelphia Eagles as “like learning another language” - “It was like listening to someone speak Japanese. It wasn’t until I sat down with the kicker and really learned about (NFL) that I grasped the game,” he told Mike Sheehan on Open Mike on Tuesday night • AFL clubs have got into the Pokemon craze this week – Port Adelaide has been one of the most active, creating a Pokemon Go guide to Alberton which informed us that the club training base had both a Pokestop and gym – earlier in the year, the Power even matched players with the pocket monsters they are most like

AFL PREVIEW ROUND17 BY DION HAYMAN

NORTH MELBOURNE V PORT ADELAIDE

SYDNEY V HAWTHORN

Saturday 4.05pm, Etihad Stadium

Thursday 6.50pm, SCG

Sydney has won three of its last six games against Hawthorn and beat the Hawks at the MCG in round nine under lights. The Swans led at every change and had a 25-point lead at the main break, 6.5 to 2.4. The Hawks reduced the margin to nine points during the final term but could get no closer, losing 10.9 (69) to 7.14 (56). Lance Franklin and Gary Rohan both kicked three goals while Jack Gunston kicked four of the Hawks’ seven. This will be Hawthorn’s first game at the SCG since round 22, 2012 when it won by seven points. The Hawks have won their last two on the cricket ground since Sydney’s last home win there in 2010. Both sides have 12 wins from 24 games at the SCG. Throw in a 2-2 record at Homebush and it’s 14-all from 28 games in Sydney. These sides met in the 2012 and 2014 grand finals and remain a chance to continue this biennial event.

North Melbourne and Port Adelaide haven’t met since the third round last season when the Power upset the Roos at home by eight points, 17.11 (113) to 16.9 (105). Jay Schulz and Lindsay Thomas both scored four goals for their respective sides. Despite that defeat, no side has more wins against the Power than North. The Roos lead Port 21 wins to nine from their 30 clashes. North won their first nine meetings before Port finally broke through for its first win in 2003. Only once has Port strung together back-to-back wins against North – both in the 2007 season when the Power reached the grand final. Yet Port has the only player to score seven goals in this fixture, Jay Schulz achieving the feat in both 2010 and 2012. Of Port’s nine wins, five have been by upwards of 47 points. Their last four clashes though have all been tight. Port has two wins by two and eight points while North’s two wins were by 10 and seven points.

Friday 7.40pm, Domain Stadium Fremantle and Geelong have not met since round two, last season when the Cats were stunned at home with a 44-point defeat. The Dockers won all four quarters on their way to scoring 15.14 (104) to Geelong’s 9.6 (60). Nat Fyfe and Michael Barlow both scored three goals for the winners. The sides haven’t met at Subiaco since round nine, 2014 when the Dockers were also victorious by 32 points, 13.18 (96) to 9.10 (64). Matthew Pavlich and Hayden Ballantyne both scored three goals in that win. Fremantle also won its previous home game against Geelong in the opening round of the 2012 season. The Cats’ last win against Freo in Perth was in 2011 when they won by 11 points. Geelong leads eight wins to seven at Subiaco and it leads comfortably overall 22 wins to 12.

The Western Bulldogs hosts Gold Coast at Cairns’s Cazaly Stadium for the third successive season (Yes, this is a Bulldogs’ home game in Queensland). The Suns have a 2-3 record in Cairns, having twice taken advantage of Richmond in the tropics. But the Bulldogs have arrived better prepared and departed better rewarded. They have a 100% record at the ground, defeating the Suns on both occasions. In 2014, the Dogs won by 28 points, 13.16 (94) to 9.12 (66) after overcoming a 12-point deficit at half-time and a game-high three goals from Charlie Dixon. Last year, the Dogs won by 22 points, 14.11 (95) to 11.7 (73) after saving themselves with a 10-goal last term. The Suns led by 26 points at the final change and seemed destined for an upset win. That margin was still intact after eight minutes when the visitors unloaded seven goals in a 13-minute burst which turned the tide. The Suns have only won two of their seven games against the Bulldogs – both at Carrara (Metricon Stadium). The Bulldogs have only hosted the Suns in Melbourne once – in their first clash in 2011.

Richmond and Essendon have barely had time to dust themselves down from their Dreamtime clash in round 10 before crossing paths again. The Tigers have won their last four games against the Bombers – a feat unrivalled since their nine straight wins from 1972-76. They also won six out of seven contests between 2005-08. Their last four wins have been by 18, 13, 27 and 38 points. Brett Deledio and Ty Vickery both scored three goals in round 10 as Richmond won 16.9 (105) to 10.7 (67). Last year Richmond was being touted as a top-four side after beating a Matthew Egan-coached Bombers’ outfit. That was in front of a crowd of just 37,864 between two of Victoria’s heavyweight clubs and figures were also down at the Dreamtime game earlier this year with only 56,948 attending. Essendon last beat Richmond in 2014 by 50 points when Ben Howlett scored five goals. The sides are now all square after 65 games at the MCG with 32 wins apiece and one draw in 1995.

Adelaide has won its last three games against Collingwood and is only one more win from equalling its record winning streak against the Magpies. The Crows won four in a row from 2005-06 with two wins at Docklands and two at Football Park. The Crows’ last three wins have come at three different venues. They won by 21 points at Adelaide Oval in 2014 when Josh Jenkins kicked four goals. They won by 16 points at the MCG when Taylor Walker scored three. Then they won by 27 points at Docklands in round two last year when Jarryd Blair scored a game-high three goals for the Magpies. Despite the Crows’ recent successes against the Magpies, no side has more wins against Adelaide than Collingwood. The Pies lead the Crows 25 wins to 14. They won six in a row against the Crows as recently as 2009-13. However, the Magpies are 0-2 at Adelaide Oval where they have lost once to both SA teams.

CARLTON V WEST COAST Sunday 12.40pm, MCG

In this round reuniting many old acquaintances comes another long overdue reunion between West Coast and Carlton who have not met since the opening round last season and only twice in more than three years. The Eagles won their last meeting at Subiaco by 69 points, 20.11 (131) to 9.8 (62) when Josh Kennedy flattened his old side with 10.1. Carlton led by 12 points at quarter-time but was thereafter outscored 16.10 to 3.7. This game is at the MCG where incredibly these sides have not met since the 1999 first semi-final which Carlton won by 54 points en route to its last grand final appearance. This is the first time these sides have met at the MCG during the minor round. Their last meeting in Melbourne was in 2014 at Docklands when the Blues won by three points. Overall the Blues lead 21 wins to 20.

Sunday 2.50pm, Etihad Stadium St Kilda continued its outrageous winning streak against Melbourne when they last met in round six at Docklands. The Saints won by 39 points, 20.15 (135) to 15.6 (96) despite a seven-goal return from Jesse Hogan. Tim Membrey booted five of his own for the Saints who extended their winning run against the Demons to a club record 13 games. Only once in that streak has Melbourne got closer than three goals to the Saints. The Demons’ last win was at the MCG in the 2006 second elimination final when they won by 18 points. Nick Riewoldt has 16 goals in his last five games against Melbourne, scoring at least three goals in each of those games. He has more goals against Melbourne (57 in 18 games) than any other team. St Kilda leads 7-3 at Docklands (the last seven in a row since Melbourne’s last win in 2002).

Jeremy Cameron booted three goals for the Giants while Rohan Bewick and Dayne Beams both scored three for Brisbane. This game is at the Gabba where the Lions lead two wins to one. The Giants were last start winners on the ground in 2014 though when they swept to a 45-point victory, 19.11 (125) to 12.8 (80) after leading by just one point at half-time. Cameron scored another four goals that day. However, the goals record holder in this fixture is Lions’ defender Daniel Merrett who scored 7.2 at the Gabba when the sides first met in 2012.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 16

BY CHRIS KENDALL

Central District v Sturt

Norwood v North Adelaide

The Bulldogs sit in fifth but will be mindful of a fast-closing Port outfit in sixth, although they are two games and percentage adrift. Their capitulation to that club two weeks back was as mystifying as it was emphatic and coach Roy Laird will have worked carefully through the tape to identify how much of it was a mental letdown. Sturt was swamped late by a fast finishing Adelaide last week, also giving coach Martin Mattner plenty to consider against a team that can also finish from the clouds. There are plenty of good cases to be made for both teams in this one, with an unheralded Central backline meeting a Sturt attack that has proven as diverse as it is potent this season. The wider expanses of Elizabeth may test the Double Blues a little, particularly given they were pushed far and wide last week at Thebarton. Despite the form pointing to Sturt, an upset is brewing.

The Redlegs are aiming to avoid the unwanted distinction of going from premiers to wooden spooner within two seasons. They had some better moments against South two weeks ago but still came up well short of the mark. North looked set to bring about the big upset against the Eagles last week but was halted by a late rush from the latter that condemned the Roosters to disappointment, having let a golden opportunity slip. The hunger in coach Josh Carr’s group to keep turning the Roosters around seems in contrast to Norwood which looks to be waiting for the season to end. The task for mentor Ben Warren will be to keep impressing upon his charges the need to stay motivated and work towards 2017 by finishing off this season in style. The talent is certainly there for the home team to take the points but the query remains over its motivation, bringing North right into calculations.

The western derby with both clubs meeting after differing wins last week. Port gave West a spanking, led by eight goals to Luke Reynolds and many dominant teammates. The Eagles looked set to go under for most of the day to North but a late flurry brought them the points, as another sound James Boyd-performance led from the front. It is a little hard to line up the Magpies from last week, given an opponent which appears to have both eyes firmly on 2017. But the sheer spread of ball winners will give Eagles mentor Michael Godden plenty to consider. The way the visitors can keep finding another gear when needed will be the challenge for Port coach Chad Cornes to counter but if Port is to make any sort of late September charge, this needs to be its chance. However, it is difficult to see this occurring.

Both teams celebrated excellent come-from-behind wins, especially Glenelg over a more fancied opposition that it had struggled against in the past. The Tigers’ second half surge against South produced one of their best victories in recent seasons and at a time when the club really needed a boost. It was the young cubs Riley McFarlane, Ben Sawford, Matt Snook, Carl Nicholson and Josh Scott that delivered in spades which bodes well for the future. Adelaide took much of the day to overcome Sturt but it was able to take the points in what was technically its first ‘home’ match, at Thebarton, and move closer to an inaugural finals berth. There was much to like about the way in which the Tigers ran in numbers, broke into space and moved the ball with confidence and precision last week and with the pressure valve of their finals chances, they look a lot mentally freer. However, running into an opponent that is keen to create its own slice of finals history will test Glenelg’s mettle and with so much on the line, the balance lies with Adelaide here.

Boomers positive after first real hit-out

T

hings will only get better, coach Andrej Lemanis promises, after a rusty first showing from the Australian men’s basketball team less than four weeks out from the Rio Olympics. NBA stars Matthew Dellavedova and Andrew Bogut watched from courtside as the Boomers narrowly edged out a US college all-star outfit 92-83 in the first of two farewell games in Melbourne on Tuesday night. Dellavedova wasn’t allowed to play because he hadn’t yet received insurance clearance from his new franchise Milwaukee following last week’s multi-million dollar deal, while Bogut remains sidelined with a knee injury. Chris Goulding also sat out as he manages an ankle issue. The trio were joined on the bench by small forward Ryan Broekhoff who hurt his ankle in the second quarter. It wasn’t serious but he could miss the second game on Thursday (at press time) as a precaution. While the Boomers took some time to find their rhythm and structure, particularly in defence against an athletic and speedy PAC12 side, Lemanis saw positive signs. “We’ve only been together a week and this

group of 12 has only practised together once, so we’re pretty advanced,” he said. “We had some nice stuff going on giving that background. “All in all, it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It gave us some learnings ... now we get a chance to evaluate that game, make some improvements, and get better for game two.” Big man Aron Baynes, who will be key in Rio if Bogut is ruled out, dunked his way to 28 points in an entertaining performance. Aleks Maric wasn’t named in the final 12-man roster but played just over seven minutes, a sign he is the likely replacement for Bogut if he doesn’t make it to Rio. He will travel with the squad to South America, where they have scheduled at least five preOlympic warm-up games. Lemanis also had high praise for back-up guards and soon-to-be Olympic debutants Kevin Lisch and Damian Martin in the absence of Dellavedova, whose NBA commitments have limited his time with the team. But Patty Mills, who only landed 4-11 from the field and 3-10 three-pointers for 15 points on Tuesday, is looking forward to getting more time with the recently-crowned NBA

Thrilled by his Olympic call-up and heartened by a top-20 finish at St Andrews last year, Fraser enters his sixth British Open in a buoyant mood. “Obviously getting into contention on Sunday afternoon is the plan,” the 37-year-old said on Tuesday after enjoying his first-ever look at the links layout on Scotland’s west coast. “The golf course suits a lot of guys this week

At world No.86, Fraser is the 28th highestranked player in the 60-man Olympic field and gives himself a shot at standing on the podium next month.

“I’m looking forward to a really good week.”

Rocky times behind ROC R

managed but missed numerous shots on goal.

ostrevor OC’s returning coach Tom Wigley has enjoyed his first two weeks back in the head mentor’s role, since Sean Jackson parted ways with the club.

Unley Mercedes Jets should present no dramas to Matthew Sharpe, Ben Nason and Jamie Solly this week.

The rocky times should be behind ROC now but Wigley will be tested this week when facing top side Prince Alfred OC.

The Jets managed one good quarter against Adelaide University but the Blacks had their measure for most of their contest last week, winning by 23 points which probably also should have been greater.

If he can motivate his troops to a stirring victory then Rostrevor OC can be assessed among the main flag rivals in the top flight of the competition.

A finals berth is still not assured for Adelaide University and it could be a tough trip to Payneham Oval on Saturday to hang onto it.

He will need his experienced team members including Craig Holm, Kieran Holland and Tim Baccanello to continue their strong on-field leadership to achieve a telling win on Saturday.

Their best will be needed from Lachlan Roach, Michael Walker and Jonathan Schulz from the Blacks again to pose some problems for the Falcons.

Their opponent dented one contender’s ambitions last week and will be keen to do the same again.

Payneham Norwood Union maintained its ruthlessness in disposing of reigning premier Goodwood Saints by 65 points with Liam Davis, Josh Hicks and Michael Ialeggio instrumental.

Hayden Jolly, Nick Clayfield and Tom Brinsley of Prince Alfred OC took a rare victory from Pertaringa Oval last week, leaving home side Tea Tree Gully questioning its premiership aspirations.

The Gullies should regain some belief this week by handing out more misery to bottom side Henley. The Sharks could not replicate their first win of the season last week, failing to have any impact in their match against Salisbury North. The Hawks should have actually won by a larger margin than the 127 points they

he top three in Division 2 are set but the two remaining finals positions could still be anyone’s.

If you can believe it, last week’s results have opened the race even wider with ninth-placed Portland still in the mix. Broadview was the greatest beneficiary, jumping to fifth following its impressive away triumph over Scotch OC by eight points. On last week’s performance the Tigers will be hard to remove now, especially with the likes of Tom Whyte, Jake Hodby and Brayden De Prinse coming into good form. Hosting second-placed Sacred Heart OC will prove if Broadview can impose itself on the top sides. SHOC’s Jacob Laba, Mitchell Bosley and Christian Vince did as was required in accounting for Portland last week.

Scotch OC has been on the decline recently, falling out of the top five. Its opponent this week, PHOS Camden, has been on the improve, sitting one win outside the five. Nick Ramsey, Orry Cross and Casey Beard will know a win over Scotch OC will enhance the Phantoms’ finals dream. Old Ignatians has been another side on freefall of late, exacerbated by a finals destroying one-point loss to St Peters OC last week.

Old Ignatians will have to knock it off to still be in the top five at the end of the day. Gaza was at the mercy of the ladder leader last week but should respond when facing bottom side SMOSH West Lakes next. Portland’s finals hopes are slim and could be over when meeting third-placed SPOC. Jordan Lockwood, Bradley Hartman and Matthew Hill of St Peters OC will still have their sights on rising up the ladder. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Raggies waiting for Ram raiders

epps Cross faces one of the toughest tests of the season when it meets top side Athelstone at home. The Rams, ninth, were no match for Seaton Ramblers to go down by 66 points. Troy Mordaunt, Andrew Tanner and Mitchell Wooding were among the best players. Athelstone is handling most opponents with ease, last week running away from Walkerville by 84 points and conceding just 1.5 after quarter time. Heath Fitzpatrick, Luke Rander (seven goals) and Matthew Mauriello were among the Raggies’ best. Hard to see anything but an Athelstone win by 70-86 points.

winning form with a 51-point win against Plympton to secure a place in the top five. Jay Collins, Simon Treloar (five goals) and Tyson Horsnell led the way. Parks by 22-38 points.

Golden Grove and Flinders Park meet at Harpers Field with the last roll of the dice for Golden Grove as far as making finals. The Kookaburras fell away against Mitcham last week to lose by 36 points after leading by 13 points at half time. Todd Sheppard, Matt Sharpe and Sam Gunning (three goals) were among the best. Mitcham can just about book its major round berth when it hosts bottom side Kilburn. The Hawks are fifth and three wins clear of the sixth team. Last week they came from behind to beat Golden Grove by 36 points with Simon Tucker, Dennis McEvoy and Ben Geytenbeek (five goals) leading the way. Kilburn was gallant in its 23-point loss to

Pembroke Old Scholars host Seaton Ramblers in another key matchup. The second-placed Pembroke edged out Kilburn by 23 points with Ryan Marini, James Allan and Ben Williams among the best. Thomas Evans kicked six goals. Seaton Ramblers was too strong for Gepps to hold fourth place. Brett Harland starred with eight goals, with James Barclay and Sean Coard handy players. The Kings can rule at home by 12-26 points.

Pembroke with James O’Loughlin, Shane Souter and Mark McCallum (four goals) among the key contributors. The Hawks should win by 48-64 points. Walkerville hosts Plympton with plenty on the line as far as relegation (Cats) and a top five (Bulldogs). Walkerville fell away against Athelstone to go down 18.12 to 5.6 after kicking 4.1 in the first quarter. Ryan Madden, Tom Sinclair and Ryan Stacey were among the best. Plympton found kicking goals tough against Flinders Park with just 3.12. Heath Deer, Adrian Tan and Johnny Pegoraro battled hard. Plympton by 10-26 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Magpies have Demons in sights

H

ope Valley faces a tough task to hold out North Haven when they meet this Saturday at Hope Valley. The Demons felt the wrath of Kenilworth last week to be the first team this season to fall to the Kookaburras, down by 16 points. Matthew Ising, Daniel Williamson and Devin Payne led Hope Valley’s best. North Haven is travelling well in third place, last week having the bye while the week before recording a 20-point win against Colonel Light Gardens. Hard to see anything but a North Haven win by 32-48 points.

Kenilworth hosts Eastern Park in a bottom versus top clash. Kenilworth could be forgiven for still being on a high after recording its first win of the season in beating Hope Valley with Shaun Clarke, Nicholas Chesser (three goals) and Blake Moser (five goals) among the best. Eastern Park cast aside Westminster Old Scholars in the third quarter to set up a 41-point win. Shawn Mansell (seven goals), Ricky Butler and Shaun Gatto led a long list of stars. Kenilworth has improved but the Demons have winners everywhere and should get home by 70-84 points.

Pooraka and Colonel Light Gardens meet at Lindblom Park in a seventh versus sixth clash. The winner will have a slight chance to make the finals while it is over for the loser. The Bulls were solid against Edwardstown last week to win by 27 points with Chris Adams, Brett Kennedy and Michael Baker (five goals) leading the charge. Colonel Light Gardens went down to Salisbury at home by 19 points last week with Emmett Wood, Harrison Lang and Jack Barlow among the better players. The Bulls look good again this week by 22-36 points.

Westminster Old Scholars and Edwardstown clash in a near-derby fixture at Glandore Oval in a second versus fifth contest. Westminster was outgunned by Eastern Park last week with Thomas Easton (three goals), Ben Fisher and Jared Shattock leading the charge. Edwardstown was beaten by Pooraka last week by 27 points after leading by five points at half time. Brinley Duggan continued his fine season to be best for the Towns with Kane Mulvaney and Aaron Parsons (three goals) not far behind. The Dragons can rebound here by 20-36 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Panthers can claw into contention

S

mithfield’s premiership capabilities will be known after its home clash against ladder leader Hectorville this week.

The Panthers are clawing themselves into the mix but their true abilities against the current top three has been susceptible. A win on Saturday, though, will go a long way to boosting confidence that they remain a contender for the Division 5 title. Ben Towell, Juane Gray and Shane Richards must impact on the contest again as they did in beating Greenacres by 22 points last week. The Hounds had no issues dismissing Pulteney by 81 points in the top versus bottom clash but Josh Denton, Simon Thwaites and Luke Broadbent will be aware they must lift for a much more competitive opponent this week. Glenunga is putting pressure on CBCOC for the last finals berth. The Rams brushed aside one top-five aspirant in Rosewater last week by a remarkable 106

points and could, in fact, be in fifth spot at the end of the weekend, depending on the Dolphins’ result.

The Demons had their own scare last week in a low scoring affair against CBCOC, just doing enough to take the points.

They face cellar dweller Pulteney now and can even earn a valuable percentage gain if Josh Henke, Guy Ward and Lachlan Turci put in another stellar performance.

Nicholas Jones, Luke Detullio and Carl Mickan ensured Lockleys remained a danger to Hectorville’s top spot.

The Bulldogs own finals prospects looked to have passed them but one almighty effort against third-placed Blackfriars OS can keep them in the hunt, despite last week’s result. The Hounds wavered a bit last Saturday, struggling to fight off relegation-bound Elizabeth, and will need to show more to be considered a premiership threat again. Facing Rosewater away is a tough encounter for the best of sides so more focus will be needed from Blackfriars OS this week. The Eagles will need to be at the same intensity for this week’s contest against secondplaced Lockleys.

The Dolphins need to get back on the winners’ list this week to stay in the five as Glenunga increases the pressure gauge. Greenacres will be a tricky opponent on Saturday especially on its home soil. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Lions, Bulldogs still in the hunt

F

itzroy and Adelaide Lutheran, as silly as it might seem for a ninth versus bottom clash, still have a slight chance of grabbing fifth place at season’s end. The Lions have four wins and the Bulldogs three but fifth team Mawson Lakes sits on five wins and not too big a break in percentage. Wyatt Mackinnon was best for the Lions last week in their loss to Woodville South, while Shane Hickey was solid for the Bulldogs in their 11-point loss to Houghton Districts. Fitzroy can do it this week by 15-27 points. Houghton Districts faces a tall order against top side West Croydon. The Raiders beat Adelaide Lutheran last week with Wade Vandermoer among the best. West Croydon was too strong for Mawson Lakes as Nathan Dickenson took charge. The Hawks to fly again by 54-70 points. Mitchell Park and Brahma Lodge should produce a tight match at Mitchell Park. The Lions have been consistent in the past month, last week going down to Ingle Farm by 19 points. Brett Parker was solid for Mitchell Park. Brahma Lodge was too good for Trinity Old Scholars with Dene Steele (five goals) leading

the way. The Tigers by 20-38 points. Ingle Farm and Mawson Lakes will have plenty of incentive, the Bulldogs to hold third place and the Saints aiming to fend off challengers below fifth place. Ingle Farm’s best against Mitchell Park last week was Matthew Smith, while Nathan Bruce-Gordon played well for the Saints. Ingle Farm looks good by 28-42 points. Trinity Old Scholars could be hard pressed to keep touch with the five against Woodville South. Trinity was best served by Sam Peters in their loss to Brahma Lodge, while Joel Matthews starred for the Cats in their 106-point crushing of Fitzroy. The Cats by 38-52 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Interesting permutations to come

W

hile the double chance is still available to whichever side wants it, it might be an unwanted reward knowing it is Salisbury West that will await in the second semi-final. It may be better to finish third or fourth to avoid a bone-crunching clash with the top side and trust one’s ability to make the preliminary final against a battered opposition. St Pauls made a leap up the ladder to third last week, beating Payneham Norwood Union by 69 points. However, having already played one more game than its rivals, the Saints will need to produce a favourable result against Adelaide University this week to stay there. The Blacks were strong in their defeat of Unley Mercedes Jets last week, by 67-points. A win will put them back into that desirable position. This should certainly encourage Adelaide University’s Simon Nankivell, James Barr and Darragh Coughlan to lift further against the likes of Rhett Thompson, Sean Bockman and Scott MacIntyre from St Pauls OS. A Saints’ victory could see them rise to second

– percentage pending – with Prince Alfred OC playing Salisbury West this week. After a week’s break, the Reds can use this clash to evaluate their future chances against the flag favourite in Division 7. The Tigers will just be out to maul another contender, in a similar way as Andrew Curyer, Samuel Biggs and Dustyn Bow tore apart Flinders University last week by a resounding 111 points. The Crabs should bounce back against winless Payneham Norwood Union. North Pines’ Aaron Firth, Tom Porter and Haydin Stansbury will be eager for another win after registering their third for the season. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

OLYMPIC STAR WATCH

15 SPORTSBEAT // 14 JULY 2016

Annette will head to her second Olympics already a successful medallist, earning bronze in London for the Omnium. She will be looking to add a different colour to her achievements, competing in the Omnium again and the women’s team pursuit which finished fourth in 2012, only a tenth of a second off reaching the gold medal race, she is expected to improve on that this year. Annette won gold in the scratch race and silver in the individual pursuit at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, then became a dual world champion in 2015. Lining up alongside Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure and Melissa Hoskins, the quartet broke the world record by almost three seconds to win gold and end Britain’s four-year dominance of the event. She then backed up to claim her first Omnium title by a healthy 16-points over London gold medallist Laura Trott. Since the London Olympics, Annette has pursued time on the road, riding with the Australian WiggleHigh5 professional cycling team.

She won a silver, bronze and fourth placing in the team time trial event across three World Road Championships.
