ans will always feel aggrieved by umpiring decisions against their side but nothing has created the furore that blew up social media after the Bulldogs-Crows clash last Saturday night.

A free kick count of 28-12 in favour of the home side infuriated Adelaide fans but it also became a talking point among Victorian media which was surprisingly on Adelaide’s side. Making the Crows numbers look worse is that three times the umpires paid free kicks despite the fact the players had initially taken fair marks and were then infringed. The AFL, though, must be concerned when one umpire Troy Pannell adjudicates 17 free kicks to the Bulldogs and just one to Adelaide which wasn’t until the final quarter. This stat is far more alarming for the competition bosses to remain seated on their hands and allowed to continue. Some Crows fans would have been surprised that Pannell did not join in the Bulldogs in singing their club song at the end of the game. For an umpire not to find a free kick for one side in over three and a half quarters of football is hard to fathom, especially when the other umpires did see it evenly

calling their frees in total at 11-11.

Adelaide has every right to question the league about any mistakes that could have impacted on the result of the contest. Of course, the numbers are not going to be even every week but paying one side free kicks and not the other must be given more attention by the league. AFL360 hosts Gerard Whateley and Mark Robinson queried the decisions this umpire made and said the discrepancy in numbers was “odd”.

not allow players milking free kicks by ducking or driving their heads into opponents. But this seems to be happening more and more and wrongly being awarded free kicks for doing so.

Players are simply going to continue doing it. It was obvious in the end that the AFL backed their umpires but it has not only been this game that has seen such variances. Umpiring remains the one contentious facet of the game where everyone feels they are a judge.

After going through Pannell’s calls, Whateley believed seven were “no brainers” and there were nine that could be debated, leaving five errors that were made.

Things haven’t improved in this area, even with more umpires on the field, and with the game getting faster, it has become more difficult for umpires to quickly make a call.

‘Robbo’ said that when you see such a discrepancy, the “radar goes up”.

Particularly noticeable in the early rounds of this season is that umpires are guessing more, which is unacceptable.

He also tried to access figures on this umpire adjudicating other Bulldogs games but Champion Data was not allowed to give him them after the AFL got involved. Keeping any past issues quiet will only heighten conspiracy theories. At the same time, concerns must not only centre around the decisions made during the match but the number that were perhaps missed. While the AFL has said that the protection of the head is paramount, it also said it could

The 36 year-old will be awarded his medal in Melbourne in June and looks forward to defending the title in Rio where he hopes to be standing atop the dais with national anthem playing this time around.

It is even worse with boundary umpires being caught behind the play and thinking the ball has gone out when it hasn’t, like the call on Eddie Betts last week. At least, much has finally been brought to a head in relation to umpiring following the weekend’s lopsidedness so hopefully the AFL is more prudent in taking some action and improving the standards required for the umpiring fraternity to meet. If we added a ‘Tool of the Week’ column to Sportsbeat Bernard Tomic would probably win it every week but he has still earnt another mention here for further antics on the tennis court.

After throwing a match point the week before by trying to return serve with his racquet handle, Tomic has now quit his first-round match in the Rome International just eight minutes in, citing it was too hot and he didn’t feel well (the temperature was just 24 degrees that day in the Italian capital). He is on a warning, along with Nick Kyrgios, that he will not be selected for the Rio Olympics but he’s quickly losing respect of the sporting world.

More danger for the Crows W

hile he who shall not be mentioned returns to Adelaide Oval on Friday night to face his former teammates for the first time, this game cannot be all about him for the Crows to succeed.

An invigorated Port Adelaide meets a vastly improved Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to continue its rise back up the AFL ladder and reinstate its expectations of playing finals football this year.

It is not even about getting a fairer run from the umpires, Adelaide’s players simply need to improve their execution around the ground to beat second-placed Geelong.

The Power certainly welcomed Brisbane allowing it to play its own hard running and spread game again last week which has run it into some vital form at the right time.

On many occasions last Saturday night against the Western Bulldogs they were sloppy with their disposal by hand and foot which enabled their opponents to counter on the turnover and create the advantage that left them always chasing.

However, now it has to reproduce that effort on the road against a Blues unit that is chasing a fourth victory in a row and showing continued development under new coach Brendon Bolton.

From being the number one clearance side in the competition in the first four rounds, the Crows have now dropped to ninth around the ground and 10th out of the centre. This was quite noticeable on Saturday night as the Bulldogs set-up quick scoring opportunities through their explosiveness out of the middle. Scott Thompson, Rory Sloane, Brad Crouch and Richard Douglas were well down on their centre-square action. It is imperative that they return to their usual standards for Adelaide to send their departed star home to Moggs Creek empty handed. In the same time Adelaide has fallen in its contested play, the Cats have risen to number two on centre clearance output, particularly with the likes of skipper Joel Selwood, yes him, Mitch Duncan, and fleeting bursts from Steven Motlop and Jimmy Bartel. Geelong is sure to be revved up by coach Chris Scott for this blockbuster clash which many have been waiting for so the key for the Crows is not to get sucked into the occasion. The fans will definitely add their input but any over antagonism of their former favoured son could backfire and spur him and his new teammates on further. Adelaide coach Don Pyke will be forced into making at least one change with David Mackay to miss with a hamstring injury which will open the door for Wayne Milera, Jarryd Lyons, Cam Ellis-Yolmen or even Nathan Van Berlo to come back in. It should be a classic contest which, after last week’s loss, becomes crucial for the home side to record the four points for the top four to remain a viable option. A loss could see Adelaide overtaken in the top eight by its cross town rival which is surprising considering how their respective seasons have transpired so far.

They have proven to be a hoodoo side too for Port Adelaide, especially away from home, so this will be a challenge to be overcome. Jackson Trengove in ruck gave it something that had been missing in past weeks, a more competitive effort at the contest. But he also brought captain Travis Boak, Ollie Wines, Jared Polec, Hamish Hartlett and even Jimmy

Footy footnotes There were things other than the umpires taking the limelight in this past week. • Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge certainly looks at the game differently, using Willy Wonka analogies to inspire his troops before and during his side’s clash with North Melbourne two weeks ago - “Right at the end there when Charlie puts the Everlasting Gobstopper on Willy Wonka’s desk. It’s such an honest moment and tonight I’m after some gobstopper moments,” Beveridge explained on Channel Seven pre-game • Demons ruckman Max Gawn has been a revelation this season and teammate Dom Tyson has put it down to the “sacrifices” the big man has been making, in particular, being “off the cigarettes,” Tyson told ABC Grandstand • It’s been a tough season for the Bombers so far so no doubt they look for some light heartedness in the gloom which vicecaptain Mark Baguley offered to a club comment on its Facebook page that was promoting an article about his foray into the forward line in the game against the Swans last week – “I thought he did really well and he’s a good bloke too so it’s a win win,” Baguley wrote about himself – Essendon’s social media manager then responded, “Thanks for the feedback. We’ll pass that onto the coaches for you. Anything else

Toumpas into the game more which it needs to be successful. Trengove also gained plenty of the ball around the ground which was invaluable for himself to have a greater impact on the game. But what is important now is for him to back it up this week. Key forward Charlie Dixon enjoyed seeing the ball come into attack quicker, while the side benefited from Justin Westhoff staying forward for most of the game. The Power, playing like it did last week, should have no trouble accounting for Carlton but any lapse to what it showed in previous weeks will give Bolton’s boys the opportunity to once again be a menace. Robbie Gray and Alipate Carlile will be crucial additions if either or both pass fitness tests this week but Port coach Ken Hinkley would not have a problem in showing belief in the same group this week that lifted for him against the Lions. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN you’d like to let them know?” • It was that game too which gave rise to the Shot Clock controversy but its introduction has really lengthened players preparation for goal as they take up the whole time on the big screens and sometimes its placed up there before players have actually got the ball in their hands – fans never wanted it in the first place and now the AFL wants to survey us to see if it should stay – c’mon AFL, make a decision! • A week after we saw chairs smashed at Adelaide Oval after the A-League grand final, we hear of a handful of chairs at the MCG being broken during the Carlton/ Collingwood clash last week – a 24 year-old man has been fined for the damage in the Ponsford Stand • Collingwood has won only four games from the last 18 it has played which is a surprising record and it was the first time the Blues had won three in a row since 2013, while Melbourne’s 73-point win over the Suns last week was its largest outside Victoria since 2011 also against Gold Coast • Interesting views from former Brisbane premiership coach Leigh Matthews this week calling for the Lions and Suns to merge to have just one AFL club in southeast Queensland because the State doesn’t warranted having two sides – it hasn’t gone down well with Gold Coast chairman Tony Cochrane who described Matthews as being “short-sighted”

AFL PREVIEW ROUND 8

BY DION HAYMAN

ADELAIDE V GEELONG

Friday 7.20pm, Adelaide Oval A month ago, Kurt Tippett made his long-awaited return to Adelaide to face the Crows and left empty handed. This Friday night, it’s a reunion with Patrick Dangerfield and Adelaide supporters will be hoping for the same result. The game is also the same fixture that was abandoned last year after the tragic death of Phil Walsh. The sides last met in the last minor round game last year in Geelong when the Cats missed the finals but sent departing veterans Steve Johnson, James Kelly and Mathew Stokes out on a high with a 39-point win, 17.17 (119) to 11.14 (80). Nathan Vardy, Josh Walker and Tom Hawkins all booted three goals (Johnson kicked 2.6 in his final game in Cats colours) while Dangerfield had 25 touches against his future employer. This will be the Cats’ first game against the Crows at Adelaide Oval. The Crows lead 14 wins to five in Adelaide but trail overall 20 wins to 17. The Crows last beat Geelong in 2013 at Football Park by two points.

GWS GIANTS V GOLD COAST

Saturday 4.05pm, Spotless Stadium Gold Coast and GWS cross paths for the first of two meetings this year. The Giants have won their last two clashes and could square the ledger at four wins apiece with another victory. GWS won both games last year – the first by 66 points at Manuka Oval, 16.23 (119) to 7.11 (53) after Cam McCarthy booted five goals and Jeremy Cameron 4.6 and the second by 15 points on the Gold Coast with four goals from Devon Smith. This will be their first clash at the Sydney Showgrounds. All previous GWS home games have been in Canberra. Gold Coast last beat GWS by 40 points at Carrara in 2014. Charlie Dixon (6 goals) is the only man to score more than five in this fixture.

ESSENDON V NORTH MELBOURNE

BRISBANE V COLLINGWOOD

North Melbourne has won its last three games against Essendon as well as five of its last six. It’s the Roos’ best run against the Bombers since they won six in a row from 2002-07. Essendon last beat North by 39 points at Docklands in the opening round of the 2014 season. Remarkably, North has kicked the same number of points against Essendon in its last three wins. In the 2014 second elimination final, North won 14.9 (93) to 12.9 (81). Last year in round seven at Docklands, North won 13.15 (93) to 12.10 (82). In round 16 last year at the same ground, North scored 14.9 (93) to 9.14 (68). The Bombers even led at half-time in two of those games. Kangaroo Ben Brown scored four goals in two of the three games as well. North enjoys a big advantage at Docklands where it has won 11 games to four.

Brisbane and Collingwood haven’t met since the opening round last season when the Magpies scraped home by 12 points at the Gabba, 12.14 (86) to 11.8 (74). The Pies had led by 35 points but the Lions kicked 4.2 to 0.3 in the final term. Brisbane has only won one of its last five games against Collingwood. That was a 67-point win at the MCG late in the 2014 season. Collingwood has left victorious on its last three trips to the Gabba. Brisbane’s last home win against Collingwood was in 2010 when it won by eight points. The Lions still lead at the Gabba 10 wins to seven. Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley only ever played against the Magpies once – for Brisbane at the Gabba in 1993. He averaged 23 possessions in his debut AFL season but only managed a season low 11 that day.

RICHMOND V SYDNEY

The 2013 grand finalists Hawthorn and Fremantle are obviously in decline, one at a greater rate than the other. They meet in Launceston for the ninth time with the Dockers still yet to win. Fremantle came closest in 2004 when it lost by nine points. Their last meeting at the ground was in round 15 last year when the Hawks won by 72 points after booting seven goals to one in the first half. Luke Breust finished with four goals. The Dockers have only won one of their last nine games against Hawthorn anywhere. That was at the MCG in round 21, 2014 when they won by 19 points on the back of a five-goal haul from Matthew Pavlich. Their last meeting was in last year’s first preliminary final at Subiaco where the Hawks won by 27 points.

Richmond likes the big scalps and has won four of its last six games against Sydney. However, the Tigers haven’t managed three in a row against the Swans since 1992-93. The Tigers’ last two wins against Sydney were both in the Harbour City. They won by three points to reach the major round in the final home and away game of 2014 at Homebush. Then they won again by 18 points in round 13 at the SCG last year. Jack Riewoldt kicked bags of four and six goals in those two games respectively. Curiously, their last clash at the MCG also finished with a win to the visitors. Sydney won by 11 points in a low-scoring affair in 2014 with Lance Franklin scoring four of his side’s nine goals.

CARLTON V PORT ADELAIDE

Sunday 12.40pm, Etihad Stadium Carlton has proved something of a bogey side for Port Adelaide in recent times. The Blues have won three of their last five games against the Power as well as eight of their last 11 since 2008. Carlton also upset Port when they last met at the MCG last year in round 12. The Blues won by four points, 17.8 (110) to 16.10 (106), holding off a fast-finishing Port after they had led by 23 points at the last change. The Power went into that game at 5-5 just one win outside the top eight while Carlton had won only one game for the season. This game is at Docklands where Carlton leads three wins to two. Port won their last meeting there in the opening round of 2014, unveiling its new hard-running game to produce a 33-point win. Overall, Port leads 15 wins to 12 with one draw.

MELBOURNE V WESTERN BULLDOGS

WEST COAST V ST KILDA

The Western Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 12 games against Melbourne and were particularly ruthless on the Demons when they last met in round 20 last year at Docklands. The Bulldogs won 24.9 (153) to 8.7 (55). In a bizarre game, the Dogs opened with 8.3 to 0.2 and led by 73 points at half-time. Yet they were held goalless in the third quarter as Melbourne scored 5.3 to reduce the margin to 42 points. The Dogs then responded with 10.2 to 1.0 in the final term. Jake Stringer top scored with four goals. It was the Dees though that won their earlier meeting last year in round eight at the MCG by 39 points. Melbourne led at every change. Jesse Hogan and Cam Pedersen finished with three goals. The Dogs have won five of their last seven meetings at the MCG.

West Coast has won its last six games in a row against St Kilda – a club record against the Saints. St Kilda last beat the Eagles in 2011 at Docklands by 19 points but this game is in Perth where the Saints haven’t beaten the Eagles since 2010. West Coast leads 12 wins to five at Subiaco, having won the last three there. Their last meeting was in the west in the final minor round game of last season. It wasn’t’ a happy one either for the visitors who were beaten by 95 points, 18.17 (125) to 4.6 (30). Mark LeCras scored four goals and Josh Kennedy and Nic Naitanui three as the Eagles increased their lead at every interval, finishing with 5.3 to 0.1 in the final term. Overall, the Eagles lead 26 wins to 17 with one draw at Docklands in 2000.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 8

BY CHRIS KENDALL

EAGLES V PORT MAGPIES

GLENELG V CENTRAL DISTRICT

The Eagles keep bubbling nicely underneath the top three and are poised to make their move, playing an efficient brand of football that is building their credentials for a finals berth. A different story down the road at Alberton, despite one of Port’s more impressive wins in recent years against West when it gutsed out the win despite having none on the bench in the last quarter. With at least three Port players expected to miss this week due to the injuries from the West match, their depth will be sorely tested here. Against an Eagles outfit which can find gears and dictate games on their terms if allowed early latitude, it looks as a real danger match for the Magpies. If they can lock the game down early into a heavily contested situation as they did early against West, it can provide some momentum. But not enough for the full game to take the points.

Glenelg continues to tantalise its loyal fan base by playing a sound brand of football for large periods of the game but a lapse of 15–20 minutes ultimately costing it the game, as seen again last week against the Eagles. A last-quarter fadeout took away many of the positives of the first half, whereas Central is building quietly with a 3-2 record that is reaping the rewards of a careful off-season recruiting campaign. These teams share a rich history and look to matchup reasonably well on paper, with Glenelg looking to have a slight advantage with outside pace. Central, however, proved against Norwood a fortnight ago it can rebound quickly from defence and move the ball stylishly through the middle to a number of attacking options capable of breaking the game open quickly if allowed latitude. This is a genuine chance for the Tigers to gain reward for effort if they maintain their belief all match. Overall, Central appears to hold the edge.

The season lurches from bad to worse for West, sliding to 0-6 after a deflating loss to a Port outfit which had only 18 available players in the last term. The Bloods get their hands on the ball enough but the execution is horrific at times, handing it directly back to the opposition. North found the match against Adelaide went 90 seconds too long in a gallant four-point loss made more difficult by the loss of Max Thring with a hamstring injury after half time. It is becoming harder to find where West will take its first points of the season. The Bloods are in games for periods during games but fall off alarmingly and seem to struggle to respond when pushed. A hungry North looks just the team to take advantage of any such lapses in concentration, even at a venue that should be a fortress for West. There is little doubt the home team will taste victory at some point this season. But I can’t tip it with confidence until it breaks that drought:

The Double Blues continue to surprise the league with their start to 2016, dropping only the one match and displaying a ruthless edge under coach Martin Mattner. The beauty of Sturt so far is a lack of reliance on any single player to turn the game, in strong contrast to recent seasons. South, however, remains the benchmark for them to chase as its unbeaten season rolled on with a solid 23-point win against Norwood after being challenged briefly in the final term. This is a match both coaches will have penciled in for a few weeks as a means of assessing where they sit in the overall scheme of things. South will be very mindful of playing just its second match away from the wide expanses of Noarlunga, to the narrower pockets of Unley. While the weather forecast does not look wet at this stage coach Brad Gotch will still be mindful of the talls cluttering each other’s space. Sturt’s quick ball movement through a range of options all capable of 20–25 possessions, into an attack that can create headaches for most clubs, gives real temptation to pick it. Bit I will stick with South to maintain its momentum.

Djokovic’s domination in 2016 has helped the Serb surge ahead of Roger Federer on the list of the sport’s highest on-court earners and to within $US727,657 of the magical mark. If he successfully defends his Rome crown this week to collect a fifth trophy in the Italian capital - and sixth title this season - the world No.1 will crack $100 million, a feat only Federer has come close to managing. The Swiss superstar has earned $US97,958,429 in prize money during his 17-year, 17-slam career, compared to Djokovic’s $US99,272,343. If Djokovic is to achieve the financial milestone this week, the 28-year-old may have to topple his big-three rivals - Rafael Nadal, Federer and Andy Murray - in successive matches in the quarter-finals, semis and final to do so. After enjoying a first-round bye, the top seed opens his campaign against French qualifier Stephane Robert.

To beat Djokovic to the $US100 million mark, the second-ranked Federer, who has played just three matches since the Australian Open due to knee and back issues, would likely need to reign in Rome and reach the final at least - at Roland Garros. But even then, Djokovic would have to suffer an injury or early exits from both prestigious claycourt events. Federer, though, remains the undoubted financial king of tennis as he closes in on becoming the sport’s first-ever billion-dollar earner. Australia’s first-ever world No.1 John Newcombe, a seven-times grand slam champion who topped the rankings in 1974, by comparison earned just $US1,062,408 ($A1.44 million) in prize money. Pat Rafter, world No.1 for a week in 1999, made $US11,133,128 ($A15.12 million), in on-court earnings, while Lleyton Hewitt, who topped the rankings for a total of 80 weeks, amassed $US20,777,859 ($A28.22 million) Three women - Serena and Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova - feature in the top-10

all-time prize money earners in tennis. Serena comes in fourth overall with $US75,929,696 in on-court riches.

Local stars headline Socceroos squad

A

-League stars Jamie Maclaren, Craig Goodwin and Stefan Mauk headline a new-look Socceroos squad for their high-profile friendly against England at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on May 27.

Unable to select Asia-based players as the match falls outside of a FIFA window, coach Ange Postecoglou has made nine changes to the squad that beat Tajikistan and Jordan in March’s World Cup qualifiers, debuting Maclaren, Mauk and midfielders Milos Degenek and Brad Inman. Former Olyroo Degenek plays for 1860 Munich while Inman, originally from Adelaide, has scored 10 goals in 39 appearances for English League Two side Crewe Alexandria this season.

The likes of Tim Cahill, Apostolos Giannoi, Trent Sainsbury and Nathan Burns were unable to be selected, while Mathew Leckie was not included for personal reasons. “We have had to cast the net far and wide again and at the same time I think we have come up with a squad that will be really competitive on the day,” Postecoglou said. “More importantly for me, it gives me a chance to see some further growth in some players playing against the best possible opposition.” Goodwin, who has joined Dutch first-tier side Sparta Rotterdam, has been given the chance to add to the two appearances for the Socceroos he made at the East Asian

Cup three years ago.

Also included are Brisbane Roar skipper Matt McKay and Bursaspor left-back Aziz Behich, who hasn’t featured for the national team in nearly 12 months. Postecoglou acknowledged the match will be a huge test for a depleted Australia against a star-studded England side, featuring the likes of Leceister City star Jamie Vardy, preparing for the Euro 2016 tournament in France. “As an Australian, it is always a special event when we face England in any sport, probably more so with football,” he said. “England is obviously a quality team and will be a good challenge for us especially away from home.’’ BY VINCE RUGARI – AAP

The Norwood Division 1 Hawks flying under radar

elusive first win of the year. ROCs have been up and down in the early part of the season so the Sharks will need to capitalise on that. Rostrevor OC, though, did produce one of its better performances last week in beating an emerging Prince Alfred OC. Coach Sean Jackson will now be encouraging his players including Oliver Wilkie, Craig Holm and Mitchell Sutcliffe for consistency to achieve consecutive wins. The Reds will meet a resurgent Port District next following the Magpies recording their first victory for 2016.

alisbury North is proving to be a sneaky side to watch, quietly going about its task but looking threatening now with four sides level atop the ladder with three wins and one loss. The Hawks are stalking the top three and appear ready to challenge for a higher spot on the Division 1 ladder. Despite a tight opening, they were able to break the shackles of Unley Mercedes Jets after quarter-time to run all over the fledgling top flight outfit and career out to an 82-point victory. Salisbury North’s real position among title fancies will be known after its clash with Payneham Norwood Union this week when Stephen Drainer, Paul Dreimann and Daniel Weetra can show their skills against a

much stronger opposition. The Falcons succumbed to their first loss of the season last week so they won’t want to make it two in a row on Saturday. The Jets will receive a visit from ladder leader Tea Tree Gully this week. They can anticipate the Gullies to be as brutal as they were last week in casting aside winless Henley. It took the top side until after half-time to do so though after the Sharks were right in the contest following a close first half. However, Adam Cockshell, Alex McKay and Matthew Min of Tea Tree Gully gained the upper hand in the second half. Henley, which hosts Rostrevor OC on Saturday, needs to play four quarters to achieve its

Focus On Furniture Division 2 Thunder ready to rumble

The Eagles and Scotch OC encounter now looks tantalising.

Heart OC on Saturday when both sides will be striving to keep their spot in the top five, with the loser potentially dropping out.

Ben Beioley, Liam Greig and Tom Camp are the new breed that coach Andrew Jarman is entrusting to lead Gaza back into finals contention.

The Thunder handed St Peters OC a surprise loss and will be hoping it is the first of many as it tries to elevate itself from the bottom of the ladder.

SHOC jumped its weekend opponent following a solid 16-point victory over Broadview and it can expect another tight tussle away.

Scotch OC was tested by PHOS Camden last week but Josh Lawson, Mitchell Lloyd and Joe Beilby raised their efforts when required.

It was a timely confidence boost for the likes of Josh Perkins, Dale Laslett and Josh Moody that they can compete well at this level.

It will look to Lachlan Button presenting strongly in attack and Mitchell Bosley and skipper Matthew Delmenico making a statement again this week.

A

Facing top side Modbury this week will see how far the gap is between the clubs in Division 2 if any at all should the Thunder pull off another victory. epps Cross and Plympton, on one win each, face a key match at Duncan Fraser Reserve to keep their seasons alive. Gepps Cross was no match for Athelstone last week, falling away to lose by 73 points. David Bray, Brodie Hudson and Mark Boothey led the way. Plympton won its first game last week when it held out Walkerville by six points at home, Jack Hoad, Nicholas Webster and Heath Deer playing well. The home ground could swing the result to Gepps by 10–26 points.

Golden Grove at home can win by 14–28 points.

Golden Grove and Kilburn also sit on one win each and their meeting at Harpers Field should be close. The Kookaburras were beaten by Flinders Park by six points last week with Sam Gunning, Daniel Lepka and Rohan Shenton solid players. Kilburn was beaten at home by Mitcham by 52 points, James O’Loughlin, Scott Galbraith and Stephen Scully among its best.

Mitcham and Seaton Ramblers provide another keen contest at Mitcham. The fourth v fifth clash sees the Hawks coming off a 52-point win against Kilburn with Samuel Clark, Steven Webster (eight goals) and Richard Rosewall leading the way. The Rams held on to beat Pembroke last week by four points with six fewer scoring shots. Callan Annett, evergreen Sean Coard and Todd Gates

Pembroke and Athelstone are in solid form with just the one loss each, sitting third and second on the ladder respectively. The Kings lost to Seaton Ramblers by four points after having 26 scoring shots to 20. Charles Canny, Ben Williams and Alex Holbrook starred. Athelstone’s best in its 73-point win against Gepps Cross were Stephan Monda, Justin Sheedy and Heath Fitzpatrick. Josh Sykes kicked five goals. The Kings at home by 10–22 points.

Demons everywhere in hot battle

H

ope Valley and Eastern Park, both known as the Demons, will lock horns at Hope Valley Oval. The home side went down to North Haven by 16 points last week after trailing by 41 points at half time. Devin Payne, Zac White and Jamie Dowling were among the better players for Hope Valley. Eastern Park enjoyed a goalfest against Kenilworth, kicking 28 goals and winning by 98 points. Alex Winter (seven goals), Nathan Warren and Nathan McIver (five goals) led a long list of good players. A demon victory of the eastern variety is tipped by 20–38 points. Kenilworth and Edwardstown are close on the map but not so close on the ladder. Kenilworth, bottom without a win, was crunched by Eastern Park last week with Nicholas Chesser, Davin Natt and Jordan Kerr battling hard. Edwardstown held on to beat

Westminster Old Scholars by two points at home with Michael Curtis, Kane Mulvaney and Chayce Fox playing well. Hard to see anything but the Towns by 28–40 points. Magpies will invade Salisbury Oval when Salisbury hosts North Haven. Salisbury, top of the ladder, had the bye last week. Jamie Wormald starred in the side’s recent win against Colonel Light Gardens. North Haven held on to beat Hope Valley by 16 points after leading by 41 points at half time. Ross Merrett, Ryan Adam and Matthew Reed led the better players, while Cohen Mattner kicked four goals. Salisbury looks good enough by 14–28 points. Westminster Old Scholars and Colonel Light Gardens meet at Tilbrook Rasheed Oval (Glandore) in another intriguing clash. The Dragons, second, lost a thriller to

Edwardstown by two points with Matthew Newman, Scott Blesing and Daniel Wakelin among the playmakers. Craig Tasborski kicked four goals. Colonel Light Gardens, sixth, proved too strong for Pooraka, winning a home clash by 50 points. Best for the Lions were Lee Davis, Mark Hirst and Ty Corey. Rams improving gradually G

lenunga is gallantly hanging onto finals hopes following a self-assured 84-point trouncing of winless Pulteney last week.

The Dolphins though have their own top-five aspirations to maintain and a win here will show they can match the best.

On the gradual improve, the Rams now encounter one of the sides they would like to disperse from the top five in Smithfield.

In-form Sam Madigan, Cail Harris and Sam Raymond are capable of lifting CBCOC to an upset here.

Playing the Panthers away will add further challenges to this already difficult match but Glenunga coach Brian Leys is sure to have his players, such as leading spearhead Chad Bourke, Tim Mitchell and Lourens Victor, well prepared for a tough contest.

However, Greenacres finals’ hopes could be slipping after losing to the Dolphins last week and now facing Lockleys away.

Smithfield will be expected to react from a humbling display against Hectorville last week. The Hounds have raced to the top of the Division 5 ladder to be an unexpected title contender. Holding a strong outfit like the Panthers goalless to half-time shows Hectorville is the genuine article in season 2016. It continued to be ruthless after the break to record a defining 55-point triumph. CBCOC is the next side for Elliot Ben, Jake Mazzone and William Michalanney to dismantle.

The Demons kept Elizabeth at the bottom of the ladder in unrelenting fashion, clearing out as their contest grew older before finishing at 80 points in front. Daniel Voyzey, Liam Narcys and Alex Paton from Lockleys are hard to contain, especially when they get on a run but the Dragons won’t be overawed by the position of their opponent. The Eagles’ first win may still be a distance off as they head to Rosewater this week. The Bulldogs are unlikely to let Elizabeth swoop in and undermine their progress. Jarrad Schar, Jake Williams and Sam Pemble will ensure Rosewater continues on its rise. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Hawks primed to tame Lions

F

itzroy has the home ground but faces an uphill battle to hold out top side West Croydon this week.

The Lions, bottom with one win, lost to Adelaide Lutheran by seven points last week with Dane Avery leading the way. West Croydon crushed Houghton Districts by 165 points with Luke Woodcock outstanding with nine goals. The Hawks look far too strong by 68–82 points. Houghton Districts hosts Mawson Lakes in a sixth versus fifth clash. Houghton kicked just 5.7 in its big loss to West Croydon with Matthew Franceschinis playing solidly. Mawson Lakes battled well to go down by 10 points to Ingle Farm, Nathan Delbridge leading his side’s best. The Saints, away from home, by 16–32 points. Mitchell Park is finding life tough with one win and faces another tough one against Woodville South. The Lions lost to Brahma Lodge by 66 points with Sam Labbozzetta their best. Woodville South is fourth with one loss. Last week it edged out Trinity Old Scholars by 11 points, Nathan Pearce leading the better players. The Cats to pounce by 38–50 points.

Ingle Farm and Brahma Lodge should produce a tight contest. Both sides are on five wins, one loss with Ingle Farm beating Mawson Lakes by 10 points last week. Ryan Hancock played well for the Bulldogs. Brahma Lodge is taking all before it, last week beating Mitchell Park by 66 points with Dylan Brooks (three goals) best. The Tigers to roar by 28–42 points. Trinity Old Scholars hosts Adelaide Lutheran with the sides occupying eighth and seventh on the ladders respectively. Anthony Rossack was best for Trinity in its 11-point loss to Woodville South, while Adelaide Lutheran’s best in its seven-point win against Fitzroy was Daniel Moos. Flinders Uni discovering its place

F

linders University has discovered its place in the competition and made it to matchof-the-round status.

The third-placed Crabs host Prince Alfred OC, second, in what could prove a telling encounter for the University outfit. Just one win behind the Reds, Flinders Uni can strengthen its top-four standing with a home victory on Saturday. It has been at the end of some whopping losses over the past two years, but handed one of its own out last week, thumping Payneham Norwood Union by an outstanding 110 points. It is time the Crabs gained a big scalp which Prince Alfred OC offered but it will require big efforts again from Damian Chesson (11 goals last week), Josh Waters and Jake Turner. The Reds had their best possible side available last week but was no match for ladder leader Salisbury West. It is hard to see any side trouble the Tigers throughout the season, possibly the Jets.

Salisbury West meets Central United fresh off the bye which it will need to compete against the strength of the Tigers. Justin Davies, Stewart Connor and Andrew Curyer of Salisbury West are sure to be as ruthless as they were last week in beating the Reds by 106 points. Adelaide University and St Pauls OS remain in touch with the top four and face struggling sides Payneham Norwood Union and North Pines on Saturday respectively. plus – I think going into the derby that’s a great thing to have under your belt.”

The toughness and honesty of Cool Chap convinced Freedman to give the gelding his chance in the Saturday’s classic.

“Charlevoix is going to be quite a while between runs – my horse I think has improved since they last met so it will be interesting.”

The son of High Chaparrel defeated several of his Derby rivals last start in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington after a second placing behind Derby favourite Charlevoix in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) at Sandown last month.

Favourites have a good record in the SA Derby, with six winning the race in the past 10 years, but it does appear more open this year.

Lee Freedman, who co-trains these days with brother Anthony, originally thought Cool Chap would be heading to the spelling paddock after that win but his progress since convinced the trainer to change plans. “He’s such a good little staying horse and so honest you’ve got to give him a crack at it,” Freedman said. “His work leading up the Derby has been as good as it was before the St Leger.” This year’s race has depth but Freedman believes Cool Chap has the right grounding for the race. “I think there’s four or five legitimate, strong chances in it,” he said. “I think where Charlevoix and ourselves are advantaged is we’ve both had a run at a mile and half

Charlevoix is the early favourite but Freedman is not conceding the race, despite Cool Chap finishing 2.5 lengths behind Mick Kent’s colt when they last met.

Godolphin trainer John O’Shea is giving both his runners, Tarquin and Etymology, strong chances in the $500,000 race as well. O’Shea was impressed with the way Tarquin ran out a strong 2000m to win at Caulfield two weeks ago and sees him handling the step up to 2500m. “I thought Tarquin was very good last start, he was right up on the speed doing plenty of work and still had enough to finish off and win quite impressively against older horses,” O’Shea said. “He’s up against some handy horses, but he definitely looks up to this class.”

IT’s a joke TWO HUNTERS ARE OUT IN THE WOODS when one of them collapses. He doesn’t seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator says “Calm down. I can help. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a gun shot is heard.
