FL boss Gillon McLachlan seems hell bent on introducing a mid-year draft or trade period but this could be the death of State leagues, especially the SANFL, across the country. Of course AFL coaches want it to top up lists that have been hit hard through injury or that need a missing link to make them a finals contender. However, taking players from State leagues mid-year will crush any justifiable competition. It will simply mean these leagues are a feeder to the AFL, which they are probably close to being already, with no real understanding to the clubs and fans in their support for local success. It has been talked about for a number of years but it seems to be a major agenda item for McLachlan to hang his head on that he has brought into play. Maybe he should be looking at a night grand final as being his shining light to the AFL. Image your SANFL side is fighting for a finals berth, only to have a few of its key stars removed to go to an interstate AFL club just to fill in while its

injured players recovered.

What happens when these regular players return, where do the drafted individuals go then?

We have had it in the past, the last mid-season draft was in 1993, and it didn’t really work then. Nothing has changed since to suggest it would in the current environment. A mid-season trade period might be more feasible but what if your AFL club gets its injuries in the second half of the season after giving up players who have now become required by opposition sides? They give examples of Port Adelaide needing a ruckman when Matthew Lobbe went down injured earlier this year and didn’t have the services of Patrick Ryder, so being able to trade for a Billy Longer from St Kilda or Will Minson from the Bulldogs would have aided the club. However, in doing so, we wouldn’t have seen the development of Jackson Trengove who stepped up admirably to the greater responsibility. This is what development is about at clubs and how they must improve from within. There are also too many major

THUMBS UP

Sure, we knock him for his childish antics but we should give him some kudos for his successes. That’s tennis ratbag Nick Kyrgios who claimed his second ATP World Tour title, defeating threetime defending champion John Isner (7-6, 7-6) to win the Atlanta Open last weekend and secure a career-high ranking of 16. In doing so, Kyrgios became only the second Australian to win multiple singles titles in a season since Lleyton Hewitt in 2014 and the first nonAmerican to win the event in its seventh year. Let’s hope not making (or skipping, whoever you talk to) the Australian Olympic team has given him some direction and credence to grow up a bit. It is so much better seeing him smile and having fun on the tennis court – $143,000 in prize money probably helps.

issues around contracts and salary caps to make these viable options.

Unfortunately injuries or not having the players to fill needs to be successful in any given year is just plain bad luck. Reboot for next season and make the right decisions about players and their fitness preparation as is the case at present.

State leagues are decimated enough as it is to be further hindered by player movement midyear which cannot be allowed. The SANFL has made some mistakes to programming and the inconsistencies of this season that any further unneeded tampering would see reduced crowd numbers diminish even further and possibly to a point where we don’t have a viable second-tier competition in this State. It would probably send us back to grassroot leagues or away from the sport altogether which cannot be beneficial to the AFL and its desires of growth and prosperity. Individual players may reap some reward from it but overall it will be the killing off of one competition to grow another. That cannot be good for the game. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS Down

What more can be said about the Australian cricket team after losing the second Test to Sri Lanka, with it the series and its number one Test ranking hanging by a thread. Its dismal batting performance, once again succumbing to spin bowling on the sub-continent, consigned Australia to its first series loss to Sri Lanka since 1999. Many are calling for an overhaul of the side, particularly with a Tour of India due next year. Poor starts are proving the catalyst to Aussie collapses and the opener Joe Burns and number three Usman Khawaja have been singled out for their inability to remain at the crease under the fire of the pitch favoured spin attack of the Sri Lankans. Too much defence and not enough attack for me!

Demons haunting Power

E

xpectation is haunting Port Adelaide and it has become time that the coaching hierarchy at Alberton realises that its players’ skill level has proven a detriment to those high aspirations. Power coach Ken Hinkley is going to have to start making some tough decisions surrounding a playing squad he has shown so much faith in, yet failed him. The club’s depth is seriously lacking, especially compared to its cross-town rival which has a surplus of talent at its disposal. Hinkley must therefore make some hard cuts on players who have just not proven themselves at this level for the future of the Port Adelaide Football Club as well as his own. There is a long list of players who remain on the fringes and will not take the club further in its quest for more premiership glory. Its current position on the ladder will see it granted a top-10 draft pick and while not the most gifted year for young talent, it will ensure the Power gains a high quality youngster from this year’s draft pool. At no point either, should the thought of trading that selection come into the minds of the recruiting staff. It is extremely unlikely that they will gain a better option from another club, with most of the top young guns looking to be traded wanting to return home to Melbourne to further their careers. Of Port Adelaide’s existing list, there is probably not much desirable to other clubs either. It appears the Power must begin again on their rebuild which may take a few more seasons to come to fruition. There is no great puzzle filler to elevate them to top-four fancy this time around but the return of Patrick Ryder will help while improved depth will assist when injuries suffice, though less injuries would be hoped for next year. If the club is willing to accept this then an even tougher decision needs to be made and that is to give Hinkley the assurances he needs to regenerate the playing stocks over time or reconsider their options. At the moment, he seems the right person to take them forward but the pressure needs to be eased for him to re-ignite enthusiasm among his group. The remaining three weeks of this season will involve sorting out which players can improve and perhaps giving opportunities to younger

team members like Jesse Palmer and Riley Bonner who appear to be next in line to taste the big league. Big Matthew Lobbe should return to face the league’s most dominant ruckman this season in Melbourne’s Max Gawn which will relieve Jackson Trengove from the rucking rigours.

on Saturday night after beating ladder leader Hawthorn last week and knowing that will mean nothing if they cannot come away with another victory here. Adelaide makes the trip to Perth looking to maintain its place in the top four and push for a possible top two.

Trengove has been a leading light in his role against bigger opposition but will strengthen the Power defence in the absence of Tom Jonas and Jack Hombsch.

Expectations will be high that the Crows simply beat the struggling 16th-placed Fremantle but it is always tough across the border. A win on Sunday evening would reward them with double success in WA in the one season for the first time in the club’s history.

It will be a confident Demons coming to town

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Footy footnotes The Crows played just as they wished last week while the Power, on the other hand, put in a performance they would quickly like to forget of which there have been too many of this year. Better was certainly expected from Port Adelaide with finals still on the line and it has added further pressure on the players to show more over these closing rounds to remain on the list in 2017. • The Showdown looks like the Power’s final chance to take something from another sub-standard season, stopping their rivals from finishing in the top four • Rumblings are getting louder about the Hawks’ four-peat prospects after last week’s surprise loss to Melbourne and now injuries and suspension lead to questioning around their top-four hopes but never underestimate them come finals time, even if they do fall to fifth or lower • A reshuffle of coaches as well as players may be needed to make the required improvements at Alberton but around the league, we are already seeing coaching moves take place – Peter Sumich has immediately parted ways with struggling Fremantle after six years at the club – there are set to be changes around Damien Hardwick at Richmond as well while Lions head Justin Leppitsch is unlikely to see out his contract as one of his assistants Simon Black steps aside to concentrate on his private academy • Ex-Crows coach Brenton Sanderson has been linked to a return to Collingwood to help friend Nathan Buckley’s efforts to lift the Magpies back up the ladder • Many are suggesting that former Carlton mentor and now Hawk assistant Brett Ratten would be a prime candidate for the Brisbane role but could ex-Power chief and

outgoing Tiger assistant Mark Williams be the saviour at his former club? • Player retirements are beginning to be announced too – mainly at the Blues so far with Andrew Walker finishing up at the weekend and injury-prone Michael Jamison calling it a day this week – body issues has forced former Hawk premiership player and Eagle Xavier Ellis into calling it quits this week too – watch this space for more to come • Calls for Brisbane to be aided are coming in strong but what concession or concessions will benefit most to improve its on-field position? – a priority draft pick or salary cap assistance like some other clubs gain from? • The holiday is nearly over for the banned Bombers and a few will need to declare their intentions for next year soon, in particular Michael Hurley and Michael Hibberd but there could be others – what does Jobe Watson’s future hold? • It has been one of many contentious new rules this season but the AFL is set to tweak the protected area infringement, allowing players more time to clear the 10-metre zone before awarding a 50-metre penalty • As the Cats were being introduced on the Etihad big screen before their clash with the Bombers on Sunday, Triple M commentator Wayne Carey noticed a surprising sponsor for one of the players, “Steve Motlop? Pasta and pizza, which, I would’ve thought seeing how he comes back for pre-season, probably is not a great sponsor for him. They might have to look at changing that sponsorship for Motlop” – Motlop is sponsored by Town Pizza and Pasta in Geelong • Saturday night’s clash between St Kilda and Sydney anointed as ‘Pride Game’ earlier this year to recognise the AFL’s community’s LGBTQI players, staff and fans has been touted as a game-changer for the code and sport in Australia with inclusiveness being a key to occasion – public acceptance will be vital though

AFL PREVIEW ROUND21 BY DION HAYMAN

WESTERN BULLDOGS V COLLINGWOOD Friday 7.20pm, Etihad Stadium

GWS GIANTS V WEST COAST

The Bulldogs have won three in a row against Collingwood for the first time since 2006-08. It’s a streak they haven’t surpassed since their record winning run of six games against the Magpies from 1942-46. Bizarrely, five of those wins were by single-digit margins. The Bulldogs’ three most recent wins against Collingwood have been by eight, 18 and 21 points. Their last clash was in round 10 at the MCG when the Bullies won 11.8 (74) to 7.11 (53). The Magpies led that game by one, five and three points at the first three change of ends but were outscored 5.3 to 1.3 in the final term. However, they were hampered by injuries to four players, leaving them with no fit players in that last quarter. Incredibly, it was Collingwood’s lowest score against the Bulldogs since 1971. Collingwood leads nine wins to seven at Docklands.

GWS and West Coast haven’t met since round five last year at Subiaco. The Eagles won that game by a whopping 87 points, 18.12 (120) to 4.9 (33) after Josh Kennedy scored six goals and Josh Hill four. The Eagles have made mince meat of the Giants on their other three meetings as well. They won by 111 points at Subiaco in 2014 after Kennedy scored 11 goals and Mark LeCras four. In 2013 at the Sydney Showgrounds, the Eagles won by an even 100 points with Kennedy and Jack Darling both scoring five goals. While their first meeting at Blacktown in 2012 saw the Eagles home by 81 points with five goals from Luke Shuey. Kennedy scored two making it 24 goals in four games against the Giants. Jeremy Cameron has just four goals in three games against the Eagles.

Carlton ended a run of three straight defeats by Brisbane when it beat the Lions by 37 points in round 11 at Docklands. Carlton took control of the game in the first half, racing to a 39-point lead by half-time, 8.4 to 1.7. The Blues maintained their advantage in the second half to win 16.6 (102) to 9.10 (64) with three goals apiece from Dennis Armfield and Jed Lamb. Brisbane had won their three previous clashes by seven, nine and 64 points. Lions captain Tom Rockliff had 48 possessions for the losing side. Carlton hasn’t beaten Brisbane at the Gabba since 2013 when it scored a 13-point win. The Blues have failed there twice since then. After 17 games at the Gabba, Brisbane leads 10 wins to seven, although Carlton leads overall 28 wins to 19.

Sydney has won its last five games in a row against St Kilda, its longest winning streak against the Saints since winning seven in a row from 1985-88. Sydney’s last three wins have been by 59, 71 and 97 points. They last met in round 22 last year at Docklands when the Swans showed no mercy scoring 20.15 (135) to St Kilda’s 4.14 (38). Issac Heeney scored four goals while Dan Hannebery led the way with 39 touches. It was the Saints’ lowest score against Sydney since 1980 at Moorabbin. St Kilda last beat Sydney in 2012 at Docklands by 28 points. The Saints lead six wins to three at Docklands with a low-scoring draw there in 2002. The Swans, though, dominate this fixture historically with 132 wins to 77 and three draws.

PORT ADELAIDE V MELBOURNE

Hawthorn has won six of its last seven games against North Melbourne including a nine-point win in round 13 at Docklands – a result which dislodged the Kangaroos from the top of the ladder for the first time since round four. North led by 15 points at quarter-time and still by two at half-time. However, the Hawks’ accuracy in front of goal eventually proved decisive and they went on to win by nine points, 14.9 (93) to 11.18 (84). The Roos finished with 29 shots on goal to 23, 55 inside 50s to 48 and 340 possessions to 270 but couldn’t make its dominance count where it mattered. James Sicily kicked a break-out five goals. North last beat Hawthorn in 2014 at the Docklands by 20 points. This will be their first meeting at the MCG since 2013 when the Hawks won by three points. Hawthorn leads 15 wins to 14 with one draw at the MCG but North has won six of the last seven at the home of football.

Port is on a remarkable club record run of seven straight wins against Melbourne dating back to 2011. The Demons’ last win in this fixture was in Darwin in round 17, 2011 by 21 points. However, Port squared the ledger seven weeks later and has won every game since including their meeting earlier this year in Alice Springs in round 10 by 45 points. Port scored 18.13 (121) to the Demons’ 10.16 (76) after recovering from a three-point deficit at quarter-time. Charlie Dixon finished with five goals while Jesse Hogan scored 3.4 for Melbourne. The Demons played the first ever AFL game at Adelaide Oval against Port Adelaide in 2011 but lost by eight points. Their only clash at the ground against Port since was in 2014 when they lost by three points in Dom Cassisi’s farewell match. Melbourne hasn’t beaten Port in Adelaide since a 2000 win at Football Park.

Gold Coast has won its last two games against Essendon after losing its first four. The sides opened the 2016 season at Carrara and the Suns jumped out of the blocks to lead by 29 points at quarter-time and 44 points by half-time. They went on to score a 61-point win, 17.19 (121) to 9.6 (60). Tom Lynch booted four goals while Matthew Stokes scored three for the Bombers. This game is at Docklands though where the Bombers have won all three previous games against the Suns – by 19 points in 2014, by 43 points in 2013 and by a record 139 points in 2011. Essendon led 16.4 to 0.1 early in the second term and won 31.11 (197) to 8.10 (58). Kyle Reimers scored eight goals that day. David Zaharakis is the only Bomber from that match likely to play here.

On the subject of thrashings, Geelong clubbed Richmond by 157 points in round six, 2007 at Docklands. The Tigers haven’t beaten the Cats since, stretching Geelong’s winning run to 11, surpassing its previous best of 10 straight wins against Richmond from 1990-96. Throw in seven wins at the start of last decade and Geelong has now won 18 of its past 19 against Richmond. The Tigers’ only success in that time was a 20-point win in 2006 at Kardinia Park. The Tigers have improved in recent times, losing their last two to Geelong by just five and nine points. They last met in round five last year at the MCG when the Cats won 12.13 (85) to 11.10 (76). SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 20

BY CHRIS KENDALL

Glenelg v Port Magpies

Central District v eagles

The glimmer of finals action was snuffed out for the Tigers after a 40-point defeat at the hands of Central which could have been far worse without a six-goal haul to Josh Scott. The Magpies were dominant from the opening bounce against North and the hard running of Kane Mitchell and Steven Summerton fed off a superb ruck display from Matthew Lobbe. With Port still having the slightest sniff of September, it will be aiming for a similar start to last week as it put paid to the contest early and made it impossible for the Roosters to make up the necessary ground. Glenelg has been able to chase down some deficits this season but it will need most to go right here, as well as hoping the AFL coaches make good on their promise to have a look at some of the youngsters plying their trade at SANFL level. However, the Magpies still look to hold the edge.

Both teams charging toward finals action, with Central having little trouble in disposing of Glenelg last week as its multidimensional onball division cut the Tigers to ribbons. The bye for the Eagles was the ideal freshen up before their closing minor round campaign which currently has them premiership favorites, despite the challenges from South Adelaide and Sturt. The Bulldogs are particularly adept at opening up slower-paced opposition teams at Elizabeth, particularly with so many that can get their hands on the ball 20 times or more. The challenge for Eagles mentor Michael Godden will be to try and restrict the Central run while gaining their own ascendancy. There are sound cases to be made for both teams here but will just lean to the Bulldogs to build their season further.

Norwood v Adelaide

A much-needed win for Norwood to take the pressure from the club, although it had to work hard in condemning West to the wooden spoon. Adelaide is assured of a finals berth now and with the AFL arm pushing hard for a top-two spot, there will be plenty of SANFL players also aiming to impress should injuries open up spots at AFL level. While Norwood was better last week, it was still laborious with ball movement for lengthy periods and Adelaide will be much more adept at punishing the Redlegs on the turnover than West was. The faster ball movement, pace and willingness to work the ball quickly into space have been a feature of Adelaide for much of the season and gives it the clear advantage.

Arguably North’s most disappointing showing of 2016 as it was never in the hunt against a rampant Port which opened up many gaps in the Rooster outfit. Coach Josh Carr agreed in labeling it one of his side’s worst efforts of the season and such a performance will be punished by a Panther outfit that suddenly has a sniff of top spot and a break in the first week of the finals following an authoritative win over Sturt last week. Part of the key for South was using its pace to work the ball quickly into space and building a break over an opponent not known for working well on bigger grounds. North will be mindful of allowing its opponent such latitude here and will look to close down the influence of Joel Cross and Brede Seccull around the clearances. A similar start to last week for both teams would make this another two points for the visitors but surely North will be on its game more on Saturday.

olympic beat Attention turns to track and field T

he second week of the Rio Olympics takes us to the track and field with plenty of highlights to come.

While there is anxiety around Australia’s rising stars, the showman Usain Bolt will be back to ignite the Olympic Stadium, not to be confused with the Maracana Stadium where we saw the spectacular Opening Ceremony commence what many believed would be a troubled Games. So far the excitement of Olympic competition has engrossed every sports lovers and some non-sports lovers over the past first week. There is high expectation as well that Australia’s track and field athletes will enjoy more success than in previous Olympics. Only just receiving his gold medal from the London Games back in June from a banned Russian competitor, the feeling of achievement still yearns strong for 50km walker Jared Tallent to actually earn in real competition. Dane Bird-Smith could be one to come out of the shadows in the 20km walk, of which Tallent has pulled out to concentrate on the longer distance and defending his title. The throwing events in the field could bring us some medals. Dani Samuels was the 2009 world champion in the women’s discus but is still pursuing her first Olympic medal at her third Games. She showed she was close to re-achieving those past successes after finishing second in a Diamond League event in Shanghai earlier this year and ranked fourth at present. Kathryn Mitchell looms as a dark horse in the women’s javelin, proving her class on the Diamond League circuit with several second placings. The pole vault has been a leap of faith for a number of Australian stars, with Emma George and Steve Hooker achieving great heights on the world stage. In Rio, Alana Boyd is following their glorious path to success and hopes to add to her

Commonwealth Games double gold won in New Delhi in 2010 and Glasgow in 2014. Women’s long jumper Brooke Stratton will be keen to make it an Australian men’s and women’s podium double with one of the men’s favourites Fabrice Lapierre. Australia’s middle-distance stocks have never been stronger with two of our best in history Ryan Gregson and Jeff Riesley leading a rising group of talent including Linden Hall, Luke Mathews and Jenny Blundell. We should also see a bundle of medals in the velodrome. Australian flag bearer Anna Meares, at her fourth Olympic Games, will be a top chance to add to her two gold medals won in Athens in 2008 and in London in 2012. Her arch-rival Victoria Pendleton will no longer pester her but there will be a strong group of up-and-comers ready to claim her limelight in the sprint category. As previously mentioned in SPORTSBEAT, local Annette Edmondson could savour success alongside her brother. Three top-10 finishes at the 2015 World Championships and a Commonwealth Games keirin gold medal will have Matt Glaetzer primed for his second Olympic Games appearance in Rio. The men’s team pursuit of Jack Bobridge, Michael Hepburn, Alex Edmondson and Glenn O’Shea will be out for redemption on the silver won in London but Great Britain remains the team to beat. Then there are the surprises, like we saw with shooting gold from country girl Catherine Skinner this week, where we never anticipated high accolades but the Olympics are for the unknown or little known as much as it is for the stars of the more popular sports. There are sure to be more shooting, archery, rowing, canoeing, sailing, triathlon, golf and equestrian highlights to come as well.

Magpies can impact top five P

ort District has found a stretch of form that could impact positions in the top five.

The Blacks were outmuscled by secondplaced Tea Tree Gully in a tough 59-point loss last week.

While making the finals is a long shot which depends on it winning each of its remaining three games and Salisbury North losing all three as well as Adelaide University losing at least two, the opportunity to affect other sides’ standings at the end of the minor round could enthuse it to close out the season strongly.

However, the Gullies can do them a favour this week by defeating Salisbury North to keep the finals race continuing. Tea Tree Gully’s Shaun McWaters, Tom Bielby and Alex McKay are presently looking the most adept to threaten frontrunner Prince Alfred OC flag dream. The Hawks, though, are on a four-game winning streak so Jamie Solly, Alex Stengle and Matthew Sharpe would have the belief that they could beat anyone at the moment.

The Magpies have won their past three matches and face a premiership contender that has lost its past three in Payneham Norwood Union this week.

The Reds won’t let anything worry them outside what they can do and Mitchell Wicks, Cameron Graetz and Jack Latchford should account for Unley Mercedes Jets this week.

At home, Travis McIntyre, James Batty and Wayne Slattery are a good chance to keep that run going as well. The Falcons cannot allow too many more slips with their grasp on the double chance beginning to slide.

Two of the unexpected struggling clubs of the competition this season in Henley and Goodwood Saints meet in the other match at this level on Saturday.

Rostrevor OC will greatly accept any further lapses from the side just above, though, as it looks to claim a top-three finish for itself. Tim Baccanello, Kieran Holland and Paul Fantasia of ROC revealed their intentions in beating Payneham Norwood Union by 44 points last week and are hoping that will be the catalyst to rising further up the ladder. On Saturday, they will host Adelaide University which is striving to get back

Vili’s Division 2

Lions remained spirited to end

S

MOSH West Lakes has been the battering ram for most sides throughout the season but despite knowing its fate of a return to Division 3, its spirits have remained high to the end. The Lions past two weeks have shown that they can compete well at this level. Two week ago they gave fellow relegated side Portland a fright but were not able to hold on, losing by four points. Last week against stronger opposition, it almost brought down second-placed Sacred Heart OC, losing by five points. It visits third-placed St Peters OC on Saturday for the penultimate round to keep the fight going which Trent Payne, Stefan Thomas and Matthew Gates are sure to uphold.

SPOC couldn’t quite stick to its task last week, failing to hold top side Modbury for four quarters, letting a nine-point lead at the final break forgo, turning into a 14-point loss. SHOC would have been relieved to come away with the points against the Lions and Lachlan Button, Nick Forster and Nick Jordan will know they cannot waver against stronger opposition. After having Portland’s measure last week, Lachlan Giles, Josh Lawson and Andrew Camens of Scotch OC await Sacred Heart OC on Saturday.

The Hawks host Broadview this week following a loss to Gaza ended the Tigers finals aspirations. The Eagles slim finals hopes are still alive after their crucial 59-point victory last week but rest with beating fifth-placed Old Ignatians away on Saturday. PHOS Camden is safely entrenched fourth and showed last week it could contest deep into the finals following an imposing 40-point victory over Old Ignatians. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

epps Cross and Golden Grove will not play finals but will be aiming for a winning end of the season on Saturday.

The Rams, bottom with just one win, lost to Walkerville last week by 64 points with Daniel Mykytyschyn, Gavin Rose and Ryan Collins among the best. Golden Grove has had a mixed bag of a season, last week pushing higher-ranked Seaton Ramblers to a five-point decision. Joshua Ingram, Sam Scudds and Judd Morris led the way. The Kookaburras should end their season on a winning note by 28-44 points. Flinders Park hosts Mitcham (at Pedlar Reserve) in a second versus fifth clash, both sides with an eye on the following week. The Reds were far too strong for Pembroke Old Scholars last week to win by 57 points. Chad Comitogianni, Matthew Morrell and Lee Allmond (two goals) were among the best.

Mitcham had no problems beating Plympton by 53 points away with James Daly, John Mason and Charles Schultz leading lights. Parks by 22-38 points.

the way. Kilburn also fell well short of Athelstone last week with Kyle Parks, Rick Fox and James O’Loughlin battling hard. Plympton by 34-52 points.

Athelstone is home to Seaton Ramblers, again both sides getting ready for finals the week after. The Raggies have been flying all season, last week too good for Kilburn by 127 points. Heath Fitzpatrick, Chris Swift and Angus Owen stood tall, while Luke Rander kicked five goals. Seaton Ramblers was pushed in beating Golden Grove by five points at home. Luke Walsh, Daniel Polanski (six goals) and Callan Annett led the way. The Raggies by 18-34 points.

Walkerville and Pembroke Old Scholars meet at Walkerville with the Cats almost safe from relegation, while the Kings will be aiming to tie up a qualifying final.

Plympton and Kilburn will play their last games for the season this Saturday when they meet at Plympton. The Bulldogs were no match for Mitcham with Jake Ferraro, Stuart Taverner and Jasper Barritt leading

Nine News Division 4 Magpies, Towns aim for knockout blow

S

alisbury and Edwardstown open their major-round campaigns with an elimination final at Salisbury Oval.

Last week the Magpies lost to Pooraka by 39 points at home with Aeddan Hull, Anthony Disibio and Shaun Rowe among the best. Edwardstown also lost to a lowerranked club when it fell at home to Hope Valley by 13 points. Towns led by 10 points at the last change before dropping off. Michael Curtis, Adam Delcano and Brinley Duggan led the way. When the sides met in the minor round the Towns won away by seven points on July 2, while the Town also won at home by 12 points on April 23. Hard to mount a strong case either way but the home ground might be the difference for Salisbury to win by 1428 points.

Despite losing close contests to Edwardstown during the season, home ground advantage may give Salisbury the edge in a final. Photo: Jayson Vowles.

Westminster Old Scholars are home to North Haven in a qualifying final. In a quirk of the draw the sides met at North Haven last week with the Magpies getting home by 35 points, albeit with similar scoring shots. Ryan Adams, Mark Cocchiaro and Jack McCafferty

played strongly for North Haven while Cohen Mattner kicked five goals and Mark Rowe backed up with four goals. Scott Blesing, Daniel Wakelin and Matthew Reid were the leading lights for the Dragons in their loss last week. In their other clash this season on May 28 North Haven won by 17 points after jumping to a 28-point lead at quarter time. Again the home ground for a finals match could be the key. The Dragons can win here by 12-26 points. Eastern Park has the bye and will play the winner of the Westminster OS/North Haven game next week in a second semifinal. Panthers can ram home authority

S

mithfield needs to ram home its authority this week to proceed to the semi-finals.

The Panthers will welcome Glenunga to their home premises on Saturday but they won’t be making any pleasantries. Home-ground advantage appears a crucial factor to this elimination final as Smithfield seem to grow another leg against visiting combatants after their long trip. Finals experience, too, should hold the home side in good stead but there should be no questioning the Rams’ credentials to reaching this stage of the season. Glenunga beat its weekend opponent last time they met just a few weeks ago, keeping the Panthers at arms’ length by 25 points. The Rams had a solid hit-out last week in preparation for the Saturday’s tough contest, accounting for Greenacres by a handy 33 points.

Glenunga coach Brian Leys will look to Sam Venning, Guy Ward, Damian Harvey, Ryan Foley and Luka Jackway to lift his charges again this week. Smithfield enters on the back of a similar effort, disposing of Elizabeth by 29 points, and Ben Towell, Quinton Graham, Swedenson Hanuman, Scott Webber and Matthew Stewart will need to be just as focused on Saturday. Hectorville snatched back top spot at the death to gain a valuable week’s break in the first week of the finals. It leaves Lockleys and Blackfriars OS to faceoff in the qualifying final. The Demons would be ruing not resting themselves this week after gifting Hectorville the top mantle due to their wayward kicking 18-point loss to the Hounds last week. However, they simply must refocus now to be ready for the college Hounds visit to

Lockleys Oval on Saturday. They split the results of two extremely tight clashes during the regular season with Blackfriars OS winning their first bout by a point and Lockleys reversing that by four points later in the minor round. The big open spaces at Lockleys will allow for a free-flowing game where Demons Hayden Martinello, Kade Boase, Liam Narcys, Tom McDonough and Sean Stormonth and Blackfriars OS’ Matthew Brincat, Travis Hillman, Patrick Harmer, Daniel McKenna and Michael Iuliano can influence the result. oodville South and Brahma Lodge get out the battle lines when they kick off their finals campaign in this Saturday’s qualifying final. Both sides take winning form into this match. Last week Woodville South beat Ingle Farm by 14 points with Vlad Zecevic, Laurence Gosling and Ashley Smith leading the way. Brahma Lodge had 36 scoring shots in beating Adelaide Lutheran by 30 points, Daniel Steele, Michael Frawley and Tim Aloisi (eight goals) among the best. When the sides met this season the Tigers won by 25 points on July 30, while the Cats got home on May 21 by 30 points. A good game coming up but it’s the Cats to move to a second semi by 12-28 points. Ingle Farm and Trinity Old Scholars meet in an elimination final with a staggering 13 points between them at the end of the minor round. Ingle Farm pushed Woodville South last week

to go down by 14 points Zach Hancock, Nicholas Lynch (four goals) and Richard Mount playing handy games. Trinity Old Scholars beat Mawson Lakes by 16 points last week, then saw results fall their way to sneak into fifth place. Innes Macphail, Mitchell Dearing and Dylan Winning were solid last week. When the sides met during the season the Bulldogs won by 21 points at home on June 25 and had six points to spare on April 16, away from home. Saints pray for success

D

The Saints will meet second-placed Prince Alfred OC on Saturday to earn another crack at the impenetrable Tigers next week. While Salisbury West couldn’t be knocked off the top mantle, it was given its toughest test for the season before maintaining its undefeated record with a nine point victory. St Pauls OS must take that effort into this year’s finals campaign and it could threaten the flag favourite’s stranglehold on the Division 7 trophy. The Saints will no doubt remember their success over the Reds the last time they met, winning by 38 points and turning around a 97-point deficit from round one. Lucio Malatesta, Liam Davies and Sean Bockman were the impetus to that victory in round 10 and remain in form now. Along with Matthew Liebelt and Nick Morasca, they can ensure St Pauls OS’ forward targets in Ryan Smiech and Wayne Nassereddine see plenty of the ball on Saturday. The 22-year-old agreed to a six-year contract on Tuesday to join City as new manager Pep Guardiola continued a major overhaul of his squad in a bid to reclaim the English Premier League title they last won in 2014. “John is an excellent young English defender and we are all really pleased he is joining us,” City director of football Txiki Begiristain told the club website. “We have worked hard to bring him to City and we feel we are signing one of the best central defenders in Europe.” Stones, who joined Everton from Barnsley in 2013 for STG3 million ($A5.12 million), is football’s second costliest defender after Brazilian David Luiz, who moved from Chelsea to Paris St Germain in 2014 for STG50 million ($A85.25 million). “I’m looking forward to the next stage in my career,” Stones said. “I’ve obviously seen what’s going on here at the Etihad. It’s an ambitious club with a great

manager so I can’t wait to get stuck in and help achieve the goals.” Spaniard Guardiola, who joined the Manchester club from Bayern Munich at the end of last season, identified Stones as the perfect fit for his possession-based game. “We want to help John show his quality with us and improve on what he has already achieved,” Guardiola said. “I like the way he plays the game and I’m looking forward to welcoming him into the squad.” Stones’ name appeared in City’s Champions League squad which was published on the UEFA website hours before the transfer was confirmed. The club admitted the mistake was a “huge embarrassment”. Stones became City’s eighth signing of the transfer window after midfielders Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Aleksandar Zinchenko, Aaron Mooy and Marlos Moreno along with forwards Leroy Sane and Gabriel Jesus. He could make his debut in City’s opening Premier League game on Saturday at home to Sunderland. AAP
