hile the likes of Eddie Betts, Robbie Gray, Cyril Rioli, Lance Franklin and Garry Ablett draw us to the game, who have been the emerging stars over the first half of the season who have excited us? Charlie Cameron has stepped out of the Betts mould to fit in nicely to the Adelaide line-up this year. Seeing him win the ball on his own merit now and then ignite the afterburners to speed away from a floundering opponent is exciting to watch. Cameron’s silky skills around goal and pressure acts inside 50 aren’t missed either. At the other end of the ground for the Crows, Jake Lever is developing into a well composed defender who not only intercepts opposition attacks but weaves out of trouble with a simple twist of his body. Similar to the swirl of a snake which he has been tagged since coming to the club, Lever is now earning the moniker of ‘Candyman’ due to the amount he sells with his flashy baulking skills. At Alberton, Aaron Young has ditched the unwanted ‘green’ vest and through increased game time is proving his class and goalscoring abilities consistently.

Stifled over recent seasons by the now defunct substitute’s rule, Young has become a vital part of the Port Adelaide outfit.

He will push for more midfield play over the journey but for now is an ideal half forward who puts in at every contest and finishes his work on the scoreboard. It has been a long time since a debutant has made an immediate impression but Darcy Byrne-Jones is revealing he has something special. While he is a different type of player, his introduction to the game has been similar to teammate Ollie Wines. Byrne-Jones’ own fierceness was highlighted by his first attack on the ball which resulted in blood streaming from his forehead. It was a vision that was clearly influential on teammates who rose to beat Essendon following a lacklustre Showdown. He hasn’t stopped since and was rightly recognised with a ‘Rising Star’ nomination after his eighth stellar performance in a row. Keeping him now will be a key task for the Power hierarchy. Barring injury, Carlton’s Jarrad Weitering should win the ‘Rising Star’ honour as he makes his place in a rejuvenated Blues outfit.

Weitering has become a vital cog in coach Brendan Bolton’s rebuilding of the club.

If not for the Bombers’ plight, fellow first year player Darcy Parish may not have received the amount of game time he is currently seeing. He hasn’t look out of sorts and has the skills to become one of the league’s finest. Not as young as some, Swans Luke Parker and Tom Mitchell have come out of the shadows of more revered teammates and fellow midfielders at Sydney such as Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery and Kieran Jack. The Western Bulldogs are well spread with talent but it has been Lachie Hunter who has stepped into the limelight more this season. Daniel Wells has been like a new recruit at North Melbourne and hasn’t lost any of his silky attributes he displayed before succumbing to long term injury the past few seasons. It is not normal that a big man will take one’s fancy in his early years but Giant Rory Lobb looks capable of taking a game apart already at just 23.

Ruckman Max Gawn at Melbourne has also elevated his game in quick time to give the Demons something to build their side around. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

THUMBS UP

THUMBS Down

Tennis champion Novak Djokovic holds all Grand Slam trophies himself, following his triumph over Scotsman Andy Murray at the French Open last weekend.

The enigma that was Muhammad Ali transcended all sports and his passing last weekend was felt right around the world.

He became only the third man in history to hold all four major titles at the one time, alongside Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver who did it twice, in 1962 and 1969. “It’s a very special moment, the biggest of my career,” Djokovic said. It was the world number one’s 12th career major and is now halfway to recording a calendar Grand Slam, last achieved by Laver 47 years ago. The tennis focus now turns to the grass with Wimbledon just over two weeks away.

He may have “floated like a butterfly, stung like a bee” inside the ring but the 74 year-old was renowned for his gentle soul as a devout family man and being a strong campaigner for civil rights. His accomplishments away from boxing equal those achieved with the gloves, which is what really makes him “The Greatest”. The world will say goodbye to the legend on Friday, with former President Bill Clinton to deliver the eulogy while Comedian Billy Crystal and sports journalist Bryant Gumbel are also expected to speak. Farewell to a true legend

Out of the dog house

P

ort Adelaide has arisen out of the dog house in recent weeks to turn its previously flagging season around and now place distinct pressure on the top eight.

Its meeting on Saturday night against West Coast at Domain Stadium gives Don Pyke’s troop just the opportunity to highlight its potential.

The manner in which it has beaten Melbourne and Collingwood across the past two weeks has renewed confidence among the playing group and finals talk is back doing the rounds.

No doubt, Pyke will stress to his players to give it everything as they can rest the following week with the bye.

However, to show that it is a finals contender, it will now need to defeat a side within the eight, something it has not achieved to date, to raise its belief further.

The Crows quick run and spread was on display against St Kilda last week but they can expect less room to roam on the narrower Subiaco Oval on Saturday night.

That chance comes on Saturday at home on Adelaide Oval when the Power faces fourthplaced Western Bulldogs.

Footy footnotes

The Bulldogs loom as an ideal opponent for Port Adelaide to display its re-found intensity level as they come to town as the most miserly team in the competition.

No surprises for tipsters last week but there were some humorous tidbits to arise from the round. • Have the Magpie faithful fallen off? – their players who had been on a good run before injury cost them against the Bulldogs the previous would have thought they were playing at a country ground with only 28,500 attending the MCG early Sunday afternoon – the club’s lowest crowd in 11 years – there would have been an eerie feeling around the ‘G’ with just that many too • The Lions’ slump this season has broken the family of club hero and admired captain Jonathan Brown – watching them getting thumped by the Blues last week was too much for his six-year old daughter Olivia, telling her dad after the game that she “barracked for Carlton now” – Browny’s not the only club great to suffer family switches in allegiances with former Bulldog Brad Johnson’s son Jack a supporter of Geelong • Blues fans would be getting excited though with not only their form but the promise shown by son of club legend Stephen Silvagni, Jack, in the VFL and an AFL debut is looking closer and closer – the dynasty, along with grandfather Serge, is set to continue • Adelaide defender Jake Lever was impressed with his own performance against the Saints when he picked up a career-high 30 possessions but disappointed by the shorter break before the side’s next game, as he tweeted, “I’m spewing it’s a 6 day break” he told fellow defender Kyle Cheney who queried, “Why?” at which Lever responded, “because I can’t brag about my 30 touches for long enough” – just get 30 again this week, Snake • It couldn’t have been more last minute for Richmond’s Troy Chaplin’s call-up to

The Bulldogs’ attack on the ball carrier has been ruthless but they have also managed to maintain their strong running game. We have seen glimpses of this intensity back in the Power’s game over recent weeks as well but even they will have to take it to the next level against this opponent. Coach Ken Hinkley might actually be able to put up the ‘UNCHANGED’ notice on this week’s team sheet as well. No injuries from their impressive victory over Collingwood would leave Hinkley confident that the same group can do a similar job on the Bulldogs this week. It was a strong and resolute decision to bring in debutant Logan Austin over experienced defender Alipate Carlile but he showed that he belonged at this level, even stepping up to the role of keeping returning Magpie forward Travis Cloke in check at times. He did it like a seasoned veteran and can now prepare himself for one of the Bulldogs talls Jack Redpath or Tom Campbell for his second game of big league football. The highlight of this clash will be watching the likes of Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines, Robbie Gray, Travis Boak and Paul Stewart against Bulldog counterparts Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Jack Macrae and Liam PIcken go at the contest in their usually hard-at-it approach. While it has beaten Sydney and GWS Giants at home, Adelaide still needs an away win over a top contender to truly announce itself as a genuine top-four, or even premiership, prospect.

Onballer Scott Thompson, who should return from his rest last week, will be invaluable at providing that added toughness around the stoppages and along with the forever running Rory Sloane and emerging star Matt Crouch, Adelaide can get on top in this area. The Crows cannot allow Eagles midfielder Matt Priddis, Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey and Chris Masten to do exactly this on the reverse. An Achilles concern may sideline key opposition ruckman Nic Naitanui which would be a bonus for Adelaide but he will be restricted if he still fronts up. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN the side last Friday night when teammate Dylan Grimes tweaked a hamstring in the warm-up (well it was just three degrees in Hobart) – Chaplin though had only just polished off a muffin and was about to get settled into a bowl of pasta in the coaches box when he was urged to race down and warm up himself and didn’t enter the field until late into the first quarter • It was great to hear an umpire admit he got a decision wrong at the weekend with Essendon player turned man in green Jordan Bannister tweeting, “No confusion ... I just paid a s*** free” after making a controversial head-high call in the HawksDemons game last week – the league didn’t see his apology in a favourable light though with Umpires coach Hayden Kennedy saying he didn’t want umpires making a “habit” of admitting their errors – disappointing really because fans would be far more accepting of umpires if they were allowed to • Like or loathe footy commentator Brian Taylor, he might have a point when questioning why the TAC under-18 competition and VFL (similarly SANFL) cannot play curtain-raisers before AFL games but the women can – “Have girls got dainty little feet that don’t dent the ground?” he queried in relation to the league’s past reason for not allowing such matches on the basis of wear and tear on the ground • We get the impression that Demon Dom Tyson was watching last week’s NRL Stateof-Origin when he tweeted that Leigh Matthews and Wally Lewis could be the same person • A Sydney shopping outlet was recently seen trying to clear out quickly a batch of club polo shirts that had locals looking twice as they had the club emblem sewn upside down • Which club had a group of its players book an international holiday for early September just 10 rounds into the season?

AFL PREVIEW ROUND12

BY DION HAYMAN

ESSENDON V HAWTHORN

Friday 7.20pm, Etihad Stadium Hawthorn has won six of its last seven games against Essendon but the Bombers split their two games last season, inflicting a twopoint defeat upon the Hawks in round two at the MCG. Essendon led at every change but slumped to a 16-point deficit by the 18-minute mark of the last quarter before slamming on the last three goals through Jake Carlilse, Travis Colyer and Cale Hooker to win 12.6 (78) to 11.10 (76). Joe Daniher and Jack Gunston both finished with three goals. The Hawks turned the tables at the same venue in round 13, winning by 38 points, 16.18 (114) to 11.10 (76) with four goals from Paul Puopolo. They kicked 11 goals to six in the second half after leading by just one point at half-time. This game is at Etihad Stadium where the Hawks have won their last three games against the Bombers and lead five wins to three.

GEELONG V NORTH MELBOURNE Saturday 6.55pm, Etihad Stadium

North Melbourne has won its last three games against Geelong in what has become the Scott twins’ derby. It’s a streak the Kangaroos haven’t bettered since 2001 when they won the last of five in a row against the Cats. Geelong’s last win against North was late in 2014 when it won by 32 points at Docklands. However, North upset Geelong by six points in the second semi-final at the MCG later the same year and won both games in 2015 at Docklands by 18 points in round four and by 41 points in round 15. Brad now leads Chris five wins to four in the Scott rivalry. At Docklands, North leads seven wins to five. North has never managed to beat Geelong by more than the 68-point margin it recorded at Arden St in 1982.

PORT ADELAIDE V WESTERN BULLDOGS Saturday 1.10pm, Adelaide Oval

The Western Bulldogs have won eight of their last 10 games against Port Adelaide but the Power did win back-to-back games in 2014-15. Both were at Adelaide Oval. In 2014, Port won by 72 points with an eight-goal haul from Jay Schulz and in round 10 last year, the Power won by 38 points after three goals from Chad Wingard. These games represent the Bulldogs’ only prior experience with Adelaide Oval. They’ve never won at the ground having never even played the Crows here in the past three years. The Bulldogs last beat Port in Adelaide in 2011 at Football Park by 60 points. They have won three of their 11 games against the Power in Adelaide. Their most recent meeting was the reverse clash last year at Docklands in round 19 when the Dogs won by 64 points. Overall, Port leads the Bulldogs 13 wins to 12.

WEST COAST V ADELAIDE

Saturday 7.10pm, Domain Stadium West Coast won five straight games against the Adelaide Crows including two preliminary finals in the Neil Craig era. Since 2008 though, both sides have won six of their 12 meetings. They met twice last year with the Eagles winning by 56 points at Subiaco in round 15, which was significantly the Crows’ first match after the passing of Phil Walsh. Josh Kennedy scored five goals that night. In round 22 at Adelaide Oval, the Crows turned the tables to win by 57 points with six goals from Josh Jenkins. The Crows have a modest record in Perth with five wins from their 17 games against the Eagles at Subiaco. Their last win came in 2013 when they won their final round match by 86 points. Head-to-head, the Eagles lead 23 wins to 18.

ST KILDA V CARLTON

Two sides in struggle town are Fremantle and Brisbane. The Dockers fly to the Gabba comforted by the knowledge they have won their last eight games in a row against the Lions since Brisbane’s last win by 15 points at Subiaco in 2009. That game was in fact the last of five straight wins by Brisbane. The Lions’ last home win against Fremantle came a year earlier in 2008 when they won by 22 points. But since 2010, the Dockers have won all five games at Subiaco and their last three straight at the Gabba. Those wins were by 13 points in 2010, two points in 2011 and by 58 points in 2014 when Michael Walters and Hayden Ballantyne both scored three goals as the Dockers won 15.16 (106) to 6.12 (48). Brisbane has scored a total of just 27.37 in its last five games against Fremantle!

Two sides on the improve appear to be Carlton and St Kilda, despite last week’s effort by the Saints. The Blues have surprisingly won their last four in a row against St Kilda including their last meeting in round four last year in Wellington. Carlton won that game 18.13 (121) to 12.9 (81) with five goals from Lachie Henderson and four from Tom Bell, neither of whom remain at the club. A fifth straight win to Carlton would be its longest streak against the Saints since it won seven in a row from 1985-88. St Kilda last beat the Blues at Docklands in 2013 by nine points, the last of four straight wins and 16 wins from their last 18 games. St Kilda leads 12 wins to seven at Docklands.

RICHMOND V GOLD COAST Sunday 2.50pm, MCG

Gold Coast has proven to be something of a bogey side for Richmond having won three of its five games against the Tigers. It’s a monkey Richmond went some way to throwing from its back when the sides last met though in round 20 last year at the MCG. Richmond won that game by 83 points, 22.6 (138) to 8.7 (55). Tyrone Vickery kicked four goals in the win. That was Richmond’s first score over 90 points against the Suns. It also was its only previous meeting with Gold Coast at the MCG. The Suns have only two wins from their nine previous trips to the MCG – both against Melbourne. The Tigers have never kicked more than three goals (that achieved just once) in a second quarter against the Suns.

GWS GIANTS V SYDNEY

Sunday 4.10pm, Spotless Stadium New competition heavyweights GWS clash with Sydney for the second time this season. The Swans won in round three at the SCG by 25 points, 14.9 (93) to 10.8 (68) with four goals from ‘Buddy’ Franklin. Sydney has now won eight of its nine games against the Giants with GWS’s only victory coming in the opening round of the 2014 season at the Sydney Showgrounds. The Giants trailed by three points at the last change but flew home booting 6.4 to 0.5 in the final term to win by 32 points. The Swans’ only other trip to the Showgrounds came in round 21 last year when they won by a crushing 89 points. Kurt Tippett scored five goals as the Swans broke the game open with seven goals to one in the third quarter.

The Queen’s Birthday Monday game continues the tradition of pitting old rivals Melbourne and Collingwood against each other. The Demons have won their last two games against Collingwood for the first time since winning four in a row from 2004-07. The Demons won in round four at the MCG by 35 points, 16.6 (102) to 9.13 (67). Jack Watts scored four goals from 17 touches. They won by 37 points in round 18 last year at the same ground, 13.13 (91) to 7.12 (54). Bernie Vince and Jesse Hogan both finished with three goals in that one as the Demons booted 4.7 to 0.2 in the final quarter after leading by just eight points at three quarter-time. These sides have met at the MCG every game since 1994 when Melbourne won by five points at Waverley.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 11

BY CHRIS KENDALL

PORT MAGPIES V STURT

Norwood v Adelaide

Sunday 2.10pm, Alberton Oval BROADCAST: Live stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Sunday 1.40pm, COOPERS STADIUM BROADCAST: 7MATE

The Redlegs’ season continues to dive into freefall as they slumped to ninth on the ladder following a 55-point loss to the Eagles last week. Their run and confidence seems to have disappeared and it will be a tough task to regenerate this against an opponent that can break a game open quickly with swift ball movement and a midfield in stellar form. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what has gone wrong at the Parade this year, given the talent on the list. Even allowing for some key injuries there still appears to some stagnancy about the playing group that was not immediately apparent in the off-season. Quite how coach Ben Warren can flick the switch to turn the season around remains to be seen, but unless they can start from this week 2016 looks to be a wasted season. Adelaide should pounce on the opportunity.

After seeming to turn its fortunes around three weeks back against South, Port took another step backwards when defeated by Glenelg last week in a see-saw struggle. Some key injuries to Alipate Carlile and Robert Young will further stretch its stocks and running into the rampant ladder leader will not assist its cause. Sturt was dynamic in disposing of Adelaide last week and the even spread around the ground makes it all the harder for the opposition to completely clamp down upon. A small injury list at AFL level does assist the Magpies here to a degree, but this game still presents some major challenges for them if they are to start a push for finals action. Sturt’s ability to break the game open so quickly with a run of scoring is proving very hard to stop when in full flight and any further holes in Port’s defence this week will test that even further. Most factors point toward Sturt extending its lead at the top.

EAGLES V CENTRAL DISTRICT

Monday 2.10pm, Gliderol Stadium BROADCAST: Live stream www.sanfl.com.au or the SANFL App

Sunday 2.10pm, MaughanThiem Hyundai Oval BROADCAST: Life FM

A bumper clash looming at Woodville, with third hosting fourth and a great opportunity for the winner to build a buffer in third spot. The Eagles were clinical in disposing of a disappointing Norwood last week, where Central’s second half against West was devastating. After scores were level at half time, the Bulldogs slammed on 11.1 to 2.8 in the second half to run right over the top of the Bloods and build real confidence ahead of this week. There have been some ripping contests between these clubs over the years and this looks to be no exception. With so many key Eagles onballers in top form, including James Boyd and Angus Poole, facing off against some highly impressive Bulldogs such as Travis Schiller and Elliott Kavanagh, some of the battles will be worth the price of admission alone. A real flip of the coin game that just comes down in favour of Central to gain the edge.

Glenelg’s challenges off field look to be driving the playing group on-field, with a brilliant win against Port last week, all the sweeter for being in the heart of enemy territory at Alberton. Willie Rioli’s five goals were well complemented by four majors to Terry Milera as the Tigers overcame a half deficit to grab the points. North played in fits and starts all day against South, dragging the margin back to 12 points near time on in the last term, but was not able to gather enough momentum to take a much needed win. The Tigers are playing an attractive brand of football that maximises the playing list very well, but the same could also be said of North for large parts of 2016. There are a number of real blue collar types in both lineups that can turn the game quickly and it will be intriguing to see the shootout between a number of the smaller Glenelg forwards versus a Rooster attack with a number of tall timber. A very difficult one to pick, but will just lean to Glenelg.

Jones will make, break England, says Kearns

E

ddie Jones may have tried to mess with the Wallabies’ minds ahead of Saturday night’s three Test series opener against England in Brisbane. But former Wallabies captain Phil Kearns believes the “fanatical” Jones may end up causing more damage to his own players during his tenure as England coach.

Jones has also made every post a winner since inheriting the reins after England’s 2015 World Cup pool group exit, guiding it to its first Grand Slam since 2003 on its way to winning the Six Nations in March. Kearns said Jones got results - but sometimes at a high price.

Kearns said Jones would make England - then break them.

He said some former international players under Jones had vowed never to work with the coach again.

“I think he will do both,” Kearns told Fox Sports’ The Back Page.

“There’s not a lot of people in the world of Eddie Jones,” Kearns said.

Will England head coach Eddie Jones get through to his players? Photo: AAP.

“I think in the short term they will be incredibly successful over the next two to three years the big question is what happens after that?

“There’s one bloke - and that’s him. That’s his world.

with the workload it was so intense.”

“He is a very astute coach but there is a point where the fanatical work ethic goes too far.”

“But he is massively intense, massively hard working and he ensures his team works hard to the point - I have heard - of overtraining them and really pushing them to the limit.

Former Wallabies mentor Jones has done his best to get under Australia’s skin with several cheeky jabs. He even predicted the Wallabies team for Saturday’s clash.

“I actually think he is a good guy.

“I have heard a couple of the guys in the Japan team say they would never play under him again because they could not keep up

Wallabies defence coach Nathan Grey successfully deflected one of the Jones barbs - that Australia’s defence had major flaws that could be exploited. “I think all defensive systems have flaws in them but it’s just a matter of being able to expose them,” Grey said. BY LAINE CLARK – AAP

Bogut wary of Zika virus in Rio A ndrew Bogut is concerned about the Zika virus and says he is wary of assurances given by the Australian Olympic Committee.

The AOC said it was taking every precaution to protect Australia’s athletes, with team medical director David Hughes following World Health Organisation guidelines.

“As of now, I’m 100 per cent committed but I am eagerly reading news articles and whatever I can to get more information about it and following it closely,” Bogut said.

Australia’s best basketballer, currently playing for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA finals, said he remained committed to going to Rio with the Australian squad, but will seek more information on the dangers to athletes.

“He says we will have minimal issues with Zika if athletes follow the guidelines,” an AOC spokesman told AAP.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned.

“Just being bitten by a mosquito and then come down with something is a pretty scary prospect,” Bogut said. “I’ve had my yellow fever shot already, which is a battle in itself. And then you’ve got malaria and you’ve got Zika. So being able to get that from an insect is pretty scary stuff.”

All Australian athletes will be provided highest-strength insect repellent and be urged to wear full-bodied clothing.

“But, as of now, I’m going.” The 11-year NBA veteran is a key to Australia’s hopes of gaining its first men’s Olympic basketball medal.

Athletes have also been told to practice safe sex and use condoms for up to six months after the Games to prevent any possible transmission of the virus.

The Boomers will also likely have NBA players Matthew Dellavedova, Patty Mills, Joe Ingles, Aron Baynes, and Cameron Bairstow on their team, making it the highest credentialled squad in Australian basketball history.

Bogut joked he might have to wear a hazmat suit to Brazil in August.

FOOTY NEWS OFFICIAL NEWS ON THE AMATEUR LEAGUE

SAAFL v VAFA STATE GAME

Eyes on the prize S

tate coach Sean Jackson will be hoping a good blend of past SANFL players can lift South Australia to victory over Victoria in the first open-age State clash in 12 years. Since 2004 State games have been played under an under-23 format but the two amateur leagues will trial an open contest on Saturday when the SAAFL meets the VAFA at Trevor Barker Oval (home of St Kilda’s VFL side in Sandringham). Victoria won the last open age clash over SA by 85 points and from that point it was believed that the Vics would be too strong to continue an open competition so a new triennial system was introduced and restricted to players under the age of 23. The two leagues agreed to test the waters with an open age clash. The experience of several past SANFL players should ensure that SA is more competitive than previous such encounters with success also well within their capabilities. Those players include Lachlan Button (Glenelg), Luke Harder (Port Adelaide), Will Dalwood and Toby Schulz (Norwood and North Adelaide), Michael Clinch (North Adelaide), Tom Hurley and Tom Bartlett (Sturt), Brock Castree (Central District and Adelaide Reserves) and Trent Heffernan (Adelaide Reserves). At the same time, 12 of Jackson’s squad have played State under-23 football so their exposure to the higher level will hold them in good stead.

“I think we’ve got the ground pretty well covered,” Jackson said. “We’ve got the best squad available and made sure that we’ve got players that can play a mixture of positions and some that can play in specific roles. “Our forward line will be strong with Harder, Button and Schulz as our keys and then some smalls around them. “Our back half looks good. We’ve got three or four PAOC lads who play together regularly each week that form the nucleus of our back line so I think we’ve got a pretty good balance.” A few late injuries from last weekend have impacted on the final SA travelling party but Jackson said his side was ready for the challenge. At the same time, Jackson has spoken to a few scouts across the border to get a gauge of his opposition but he doesn’t know a lot about the Victorian squad. However, he is not too concerned about that as he makes his plans for Saturday’s contest. “We’ll go in with our eyes wide open,” he said. “If you go in with preconceived ideas about Victoria then we’ll be a bit negative. We know who their full forward is and that’s not going to change who we play at full back. “We just pick the best players that we’ve got in the best position or in the positions that suit them and who they match-up against doesn’t really concern us. I’m confident that the

midfield blokes can stand alone. “Last year they assumed that they were going to win but we beat them in the under-23s and knocked them out of the competition and we didn’t go with any concerns about Victoria then.” A few names in the initial 32-man Victorian squad may look familiar, such as former SA State under-23 representative George Hurley-Wellington (who played for Adelaide University here) and ex-Geelong AFL player George Burbury. The Norwood Division 1

Intrigue still to come

T

he anticipated top sides at the beginning of the season have been the ones emphasising their credentials over the early rounds of Division 1 football. However, the real intrigue looks set to come after this weekend’s break when the genuine threats will reveal themselves. Prince Alfred OC’s off-season recruitment indicated that it was ready to place itself among the mix of top contenders in 2016 and it has proven it on-field, sitting on top already. The top two contenders were always expected to be Payneham Norwood Union, last year’s grand final losers, and Tea Tree Gully, 2015 minor premier, and neither have disappointed so far. If the Reds have any weakness, then the Falcons and the Gullies are sure to find it

and attack it strongly. Rostrevor OC has been slow starters this year but with key players returning from injury after the bye, it has the ability to impose itself on the top sides. Adelaide University has probably surprised most with some of its victories in recent weeks to position itself in the top five. The Blacks will face tough pressure from Goodwood Saints and Salisbury North for that coveted finals spot but it would be a great result for the club if it could hang on with no real star individuals this year. Beating Tea Tree Gully and ROCs in consecutive weeks suggests that they are not just being nuisances but are ready to push for higher honours.

Reigning premiers Goodwood Saints went through their biggest loss of players in a number of years and it has shown over the early rounds but if they make the finals anything can happen as we have seen before. The Hawks losing four premiership points for incurring added on-field indiscretions is set to be detrimental to their finals chances but they remain close enough to still give themselves hope. Port District is within distance of the five but unlikely to really put itself among those above it. Fighting off Unley Mercedes Jets for demotion looms as the Magpies greatest contest over the remainder of the season. Nothing has gone right for winless Henley and it is hard to see it improving with relegation most likely. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Hard to assess T

he Division 2 competition is proving the hardest to assess due to its present tightness, from top to bottom.

It is the closest division in the Channel Nine Adelaide Football League, albeit only eight rounds in. It is difficult to see SMOSH West Lakes or Portland challenging for final contention but they do remain within reach if either gets a spur on following this weekend’s mid-season break. Broadview, PHOS Camden and Gaza sit outside the top five at present and have shown that they can compete well against higher opposition but have lacked the knockout blow when required. They should not be underestimated though and either could snatch a spot with St Peters OC and Scotch OC susceptible if put under greater

pressure by the Tigers, the Phantoms or the Eagles as the season progresses.

Current ladder leader Modbury looks the safest bet to finish on top but as premiership fancy, the market is still wide open. Sacred Heart OC has slowly developed into a potential threat and will be hoping that the break does not stall its rise up the ladder. Its tussle with Old Ignatians for second spot will be a highlight of the run home as the advantage granted the higher placed club in the finals could be a deciding factor at the end of the day. However, neither can afford any costly slip up at the same time, allowing another side to gain some ascendancy. It will all be about momentum though as the second half of the season transpires with the

thelstone and Flinders Park lead the pack going into the mid-season break with eight wins from nine games. Athelstone’s only loss for the season so far was against Flinders Park at home when it lost by 17 points on April 23. The side has had good depth in its best players with Luke Rander its leading goalkicker with 25 goals. Justin Sheedy and Matthew Leigh also have been consistent. Flinders Park also has the one loss with a 66-point loss against Pembroke Old Scholars on May 28. Charles Canny, Daniel Blythe, Thomas Dunn and Jay Hansen have been among the side’s best players. Pembroke Old Scholars sit third with some impressive results so far. The Kings look a big chance in the second half of the season with players such as triple Magarey Medallist James Allan the ace in the pack. Ben Williams has been ultra consistent and featuring in his side’s best most weeks. Mitcham is fourth and playing solidly. Ben Geytenbeek (28 goals) and Steven Webster

(23 goals) are proving good scoring options, while Samuel Clark has been solid. Seaton Ramblers has produced some good games and is fifth with five wins. Brett Harland leads the team’s goalkickers with 27 goals, while Callan Annett, Luke Walsh and Todd Gates have enjoyed top moments. Golden Grove looks the best chance of those teams out of the five to make the finals. The Kookaburras have four wins. Sam Gunning leads the scorers with 27 goals, while Brayden Shaw has kicked 22 goals. Todd Sheppard has been very solid. Plympton will need a big to make the major round with three wins. Heath Deer and Kieren Nelson have been among the side’s best players. Gepps Cross is finding the competition tough with two wins. Club champ Brodie Hudson is leading his side’s scorers with 14 goals but he has also played well around the ground. Mark Boothey has stood tall in a battling side, while Gavin Rose, Ashley Benz and Daniel Mason have had good form.

Nine News Division 4

Magpies, Towns enjoy view from top N orth Haven and Edwardstown enter the break in this division on seven wins but hardly any reason to plan September action just yet with a big pack of teams not far away.

Salisbury is fifth but one win from top place. The Magpies have been solid in most games with Brad Horjus among the top goalkickers with 26 goals.

The Magpies lost to the Towns by a goal at home in mid April but appear to be developing a good foundation for the second half of the season. Cohen Mattner leads all scorers with 39 goals.

Colonel Light Gardens is two wins out of the top five and finding its way up a grade. Josh Bennett has been very solid for the Lions with 17 goals. Hope Valley faces a big challenge to push for the top five with two wins on the board, Devin Payne a star so far. Pooraka has had some good moments but still has only two wins with Chris Adams one of his side’s best players with 22 goals. Kenilworth has faced a testing start to the season without a win, although it missed by a point to Colonel Light Gardens. Blake Moser leads the team’s attack with 18 goals, while Nicholas Chesser, Andrew Liverton, Shaun Clarke, Henry Moss, Luke Gane, Davin Natt and James Siemering haven been solid to the break.

Edwardstown is settling into a new competition with some solid efforts. Colby Blyth has been solid with 22 goals, while Kane Mulvaney, Toby Case and Brinley Duggan have been among the prime movers so far. Eastern Park is third with six wins. Shawn Mansell leads his team’s scorers with 38 goals with Ricky Butler among the best. Westminster Old Scholars looks to be gathering momentum with six wins and a good percentage. Ben Fisher and Scott Blesing are among the standouts.

BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Walkerville, with one win, has seen Ty Allen as its best. Kilburn, with one win, has a big job in the run home. James O’Loughlin has been a bright light, while Michael Howson with 22 goals and Jason Sandercock have been very good in a battling team. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Nine News Division 5

Anyone’s premiership

T

he top five in Division 5 looks to be practically secure, albeit for any slips from those just within and strong rises from a couple of sides just outside. Rosewater seems to be the most vulnerable if a current top-five unit fell away over the second half of the season. The Bulldogs hold a handy four-point buffer though over its nearest challenger and with three of their next four games against those sides looking to sneak in – CBCOC, Greenacres and Glenunga – then they could seal their finals berth sooner rather than later. Top spot has continued to change hands on a regular basis over recent weeks as Hectorville, Lockleys and Blackfriars OS fail hold firm under the added weight of the top mantle. Blackfriars OS, which would be the current flag favourite, has a one-win advantage over the other pair at the moment but we can assume a few more twists will prevail before all is revealed come finals time. It could even become a battle of the Hounds on the biggest day of the season as well. Smithfield is yet to underline its full strengths but sits quietly waiting to impose itself. To make the leap, the Panthers will need to discover some away form with only three of their remaining eight games at home where they are hardest to beat. On the road, they haven’t been as intimidating this year. Pulteney and Elizabeth would like to add their input into the final make-up of the five but they already appear destined for Division 6 next year. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Hot Hawks maiming to soar

W

est Croydon is the major player in this division at the mid-season mark. The Hawks have sailed through the season with just a draw against Trinity OId Scholars as the only near blemish so far. Luke Woodcock leads his team’s scorers with 34 goals. Matthew Stancl, Ryan Davies, Jack Sumpton, Stanley Freeman, Nathan Dickenson and Nicholas Symons among the best. Woodville South is right on the pace with just the one loss. The Cats also have enjoyed good games with Chris Clark proving handy in attack with 27 goals. Other better players at this stage have been Matthew Burns, Joel Matthews, Alex Dankiewicz, Brett Hains, Chad Percy, Dhenon Economou, Nathan Pearce and Tom Daly among the best. Ingle Farm is sitting third with eight wins and looks good for the finals. Best of its scorers is Nicholas Lynch with 27 goals, while Daniel Bryant, Nathan Buck, Peter Verigan and Zach Hancock have been solid. Braham Lodge is in a handy position in fourth place with six wins. Tim Aloisi leads all scorers with 46 goals, while Darren Huitema, Dylan Brooks, Chris Motley, Dene Steele, Joshua Sobels, David Savage have led the side well. Trinity Old Scholars is mid table with several good results. Todd

Lamont has kicked 18 goals, while Innes Macphail, Brad Cameron, Andrew Punendis, Dylan Winning, Wade Hall and Sam Peters have been good contributors. Mawson Lakes is sixth with four wins and in the hunt for the finals. Ivan Novosel has been solid with 23 goals, while Brayden Bennett, Andy Carr, Darren King and Nathan Delbridge have had consistent seasons. Houghton Districts also is not out of finals contention with three wins. The Raiders have seen good games from Alex Bray (22 goals), Wade Vandermoer, Nathan Hall, Jai McMurtrie and Josh Davis. Adelaide Lutheran is another team in a cluster on three wins. Xander Redhead leads the Bulldog scorers with 12 goals. Among the better players include Shane Hickey, Christopher Koenig, Jake Anspach, Jeremy Borgas and Scott Babolka. Fitzroy is struggling with two wins and needs a lift to be around the mark for the finals. Darryl Cotter leads the team’s goals with 20, with solid efforts from Dane Avery, Shaun Smith and Lee Makris. Mitchell Park has found the step up a division a little hot at this stage and sits on the bottom with one win. Nat McDonnell has been solid again with 30 goals, while Brandon Walczak, Ben Weekley, Jack Van Den Brink and Chris Farrell have played well for most of the season. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

The Tigers have pulled apart their opposition with scant regard in the first half of the year and little is likely to change in the run to the finals. However, which side it will meet on the last day of the season is wide open. Prince Alfred OC is the front runner at present but even it experienced a lapse, going down to St Pauls OS last week, to show any of the other sides could beat another on any given day, except perhaps for Payneham Norwood Union which has found things tough with its ‘C-grade’ battling against other clubs’ ‘A-grade’ outfits. The University clubs have imposed themselves on the competition over the early part of the season and could threaten for a grand final appearance.

Tiger mauling hard to prevent alisbury West has been the clear dominant force in Division 7 this season so much so that the rest of the sides here will have trouble overhauling it for the premiership.

DIVISION 1 LADDER

Although both have a tendency to drop games that they shouldn’t and the big stage of finals pressure will be a test for each of them. Unley Mercedes Jets have similarly come a cropper when expectations were higher but while their ‘A-grade’ in Division 1 struggles, this side maybe strengthened so the club can pursue some success over the second half of the season. St Pauls OS would like to make amends for falling out of the finals race quickly last year and will hope for further improvement over the latter rounds to push its claims. Central United has been up and down so far but it cannot be left out of the possible chances, especially if it gets its act together as highlighted by last week’s win over the Jets. However, it is hard to see any of them prevent a Tiger mauling in September. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

15 SPORTSBEAT // 9 JUNE 2016

Maher won Queensland’s richest race last year with classy mare Srikandi. “She worked well and I was happy with her,” he said. “She was just going out for a nice blow and there was a nice bit of give in the track that suited her. “She pulled up well and it’s onto Saturday.” Maher declared her first-up second to Music Magnate in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (1350m) two week ago will have her at her peak for Saturday. “The Doomben 10,000 run would have done her the world of good, it was just the fitness top-up she needed,’’ he said. “She has always been a mare who has improved with racing and I am sure she is ready to show people what she can do on Saturday. “She generally just needs luck in running … she gets back and she’s either got to weave a path

through the field or go wide.”

Her last start conqueror Music Magnate is primed for another run, especially being undefeated over Saturday’s distance. A three-time winner over the 1400m from as many starts, the smart stallion was kept at the Gold Coast this week with trainer Bjorn Baker opting not to give him an earlier look at the new course proper at Eagle Farm. “I’ve been up here (at the Gold Coast) since the weekend, he looks great, he has held his condition well,” Baker said. Kerrin McEvoy, who rode Srikandi to victory in the Stradbroke last year, stays aboard Music Magnate aiming for another win in the feature. Trainer Lee Freedman is happy with Malaguarra before her tilt at the Stradbroke Handicap but admitted it would have been better if he had a lighter weight. Malaguerra beat Dothraki in a tight finish in the Group One BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben on 14 May to secure a place in the Stradbroke field. “It would have been nice to have a couple of kilos less but we wanted to be sure he would get into the race,” Freedman said.

IT’s a joke A GUY ABOUT TO TEE OFF WAS APPROACHED by a man who held out a card that read, “I am a deaf mute. May I please play through?” The first man gave the card back, angrily shaking his head, and saying, “No, you CANNOT play through.” Assumed the deaf guy could read lips, he also mouthed, “I can’t believe you would try to use your handicap to your own advantage like that! Shame on you!” The deaf man walked away disappointed and the first man whacked the ball onto the green and then walked off to finish the hole. Just as he was about to put the ball into the hole he was hit in the head by another ball that knocked him out cold. When he came to a few minutes later, he looked around and saw the deaf mute sternly looking at him, one hand on his hip, the other hand holding up four fingers.
