Fans being left out in the cold

S

o the players are talking up the possibility of striking if they don’t get a favourable outcome from an upcoming collective bargaining agreement for a pay rise. Really! Aren’t they well paid enough at the moment? This all centres around the new TV rights deal that is up for offer. The usually lucrative TV rights that sees much of the profitable rewards go into the AFL’s coffers has players bartering for more benefits from the deal to come their way. In fact it has been reported, they want about 25 percent of the total AFL industry revenue. They are calling for a structure much like that of the NBA in America where basketball players receive nearly 50 percent of the game’s revenue. The AFL players put Paul Marsh into the head role of their Players Association to negotiate such an outcome, as he had done for the Australian cricketers. Marsh was instrumental in

brokering a set percentage deal with Cricket Australia and now he has been called upon to achieve the same with the AFL. Players, though, will always benefit from the riches of the game and pushing for a pay rise, especially considering what many already receive, is a slap in the face of all their fans. Maybe the fans should think about striking. They will be the ones suffering the most from the new TV deal anyway, in particular with reports that more games will go to Foxtel from next season and only three games a weekend will be seen on free-to-air. While Crows and Power fans will still see their sides play on freeto-air every week, if you support another club in the competition then your viewing will be limited. Who’s to say how long local fans will keep their fix on free-to-air as well. So fans, let’s boycott games until we get a better deal then. Maybe we could also fight for better ticketing prices, especially for finals, and push for cheaper

Aussie Greg Chalmers has broken through for his maiden success on the PGA Tour, winning the Barracuda Championship in Reno last weekend. The 42 year-old eagled the final hole for a six-point victory in the modified Stableford scoring event. The win also earned him a place in next week’s British Open in Royal Toon plus a two-year exemption on the rich PGA Tour. Fortune favoured the two-time Australian Open and Australian PGA champion as the British Open Championship spot was to be awarded at this weekend’s Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia but floods forced an early cancellation of the event and so the spot was transferred to the leading player not already eligible at Montreux.

BEATBOX food and beverage at games. The list could probably go on. Fans who support the game, particularly those financially through memberships and merchandise purchases, are again being forgotten. It is therefore hypercritical for players to be asking for more money but maybe see how they enjoy playing in empty stadiums. The players have always been looked after in past TV deal arrangements and it is unlikely that they won’t again be well rewarded for what they bring to the game with the next deal on the table. However, putting their hands out for more of the game’s revenue can only be detrimental to what the fans will receive. The AFL is already putting huge dollars into the development of next year’s women’s league which is leaving the grassroots level battling for survival. If they don’t have growth there, then there will be no game. It is the support of local fans that is keeping many of these community clubs afloat. So AFL, it may be the players who play the game but fans ensure the game prospers. Don’t leave them out in the cold if you really want the competition to thrive even more in the future. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton isn’t making too many friends on the Formula One circuit, particularly teammate Nico Rosberg, but he has also had issues with former teammates, team bosses and fans.

Willing to do anything to win, Hamilton took out the Austrian Grand Prix last Sunday after a last-lap crash with leading Rosberg that the German, well and truly, blamed on his overzealous rival but was himself penalised by Formula One officials. It has been a tumultuous relationship since the once childhood karting friends came together onto the one team in 2013 with numerous words and fracas being had by the outspoken pair. Rosberg still leads the drivers’ championship, 11 points ahead of Hamilton.

AFL NEWS

Unchanged

I

t’s the word we have heard most often from the Crows on selection night this season but we are also set to have Power coach Ken Hinkley announce the word “unchanged” in relation to his side’s line-up for this week as well. Both sides are unlikely to make any changes to the sides that had forthright victories last week. Port Adelaide is back on centre stage with the Thursday night blockbuster this week against ladder leader Hawthorn, coming off its break. It will need to present with nothing less than the intensity level shown in limiting Richmond’s run last Friday night to compete with the flag favourite once again. However, it was the only side that had the Hawks measure last year, beating it on both occasions during the minor round. The Power’s apprehensive mental approach, which is basically a lack of self-confidence, will be the key to their chances this week in finally snaring the scalp of a top finals contender. Their belief seems to be improving, albeit probably too late to be a finals challenger. They tend to lift for games like this, though, and they need to do so further from last week’s contest. Port Adelaide’s success over its round 16 opponent has been that it matches up well against the might of the Hawks but this week the concern for Hinkley will be experience. His younger, smaller-bodied unit will see where it needs to be to become successful in the way of building physical strength but it can still bring the pressure required to restrict its opposition’s ball movement. Club CEO Keith Thomas has probably added some pressure to his side’s expectations, declaring the list is top-four quality earlier in the week but there is no better side to prove that against than Hawthorn. There were good signs from Jared Polec, Jimmy Toumpas, Paul Stewart, Sam Gray, Sam Colquhuon and even Jesse Palmer in the SANFL last week but Hinkley, who has always shown faith in his playing group, is set to do so with those who beat the Tigers last week. Adelaide makes a trip back to the MCG on Sunday to face an out-of-sorts Carlton. However, coach Don Pyke’s side cannot take that philosophy into this week’s contest. Pyke will want his players to be at their fiercest with not only a win vital to their top-four prospects but in a tight top eight, he would be pushing for a ruthless effort to

3 SPORTSBEAT // 7 JULY 2016 further boost percentage. Obviously, players’ skill level will need to improve on last week, particularly if challenged like they were in the second quarter against Melbourne. Their quicker pace and ball movement should be too great for the Blues which played a slow, stop-start game last week against arch rival Collingwood. Their short, chipping style of play lacked fluency and if they present with much of the same this week, it will simply fall into Adelaide hands and be duly punished by its opponent’s long kicking game into an imposing forward line.

Footy footnotes Pressure wins football games and that’s what we saw from both the Power and the Crows last week. Phil Walsh would have been proud of both clubs endeavour last weekend. • It’s Multi-cultural Round this week – sponsored by Pauline Hanson perhaps? • Fremantle may not be experiencing the season it was hoping on-field but things are on the up off-field with former coach Damian Drum’s election win for the Nationals as the member for Murray, a seat in Victoria’s north which includes Shepparton and Echuca • Concussion is becoming more concerning than the knee injuries – while knee reconstructions can leave a player sidelined for up to 12 months, head knocks are beginning to end careers – so hopefully the Saints do the right thing with their number one recruit Patrick McCartin and put him away for the rest of the year after he suffered his third concussion in 11 weeks – similarly Demon Heritier Lumumba incurred another one in the VFL last week as well • Port Adelaide revealed its missing defensive powers against Richmond last week, restricting the Tigers to the longest time until their first inside-50 was recorded in a quarter at 18:22 mark of the second term – that’s almost a full quarter- but they were also strong on the offensive kicking seven goals itself for the term • Whether it’s adjudged better than Crow Eddie Betts’ goal-of-the-year nomination is another matter but Power forward Justin Westhoff has declared that his freakish nod from last week was no fluke and some believe it should give the Betts’ one a run for its money – Magpies’ skipper Scott Pendlebury certainly iterated so on Twitter, saying “Hard to get an answer but if that’s

The visitors’ fast breaks through the middle could create havoc, giving the Crows’ size advantage in attack more opportunities than Carlton can contain. Rain could assist the Blues curtail Adelaide’s marking strengths inside-50 but that will just expose ex-Blue Eddie Betts, Charlie Cameron and Richard Douglas at ground level and Betts is yet to have a real big day out against his old side but the opportunity looms large here. It will be interesting though to see old boys Sam Kerridge and Matthew Wright face the Crows for the first time. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN deliberate that’s goal of the year. Amazing coordination.” • While ex-Crow Simon Goodwin will take over senior responsibilities from Paul Roos from next season, the outgoing mentor has flagged an interest in taking the reins of the club’s inaugural women’s side next year – Melbourne’s hierarchy should be jumping on this quickly, especially after expected Demons’ women’s coach Michelle Cowan chosen to remain in Perth and coach the Dockers’ women’s side • Carlton has pulled off an early recruiting coup for the women’s side with the high profile signing of former Matildas’ goalkeeper Brianna Davey, luring her away from soccer – Davey was the number one pick by the Western Bulldogs for last year’s exhibition game against Melbourne but she returned to the W-League where she won the title with Melbourne City – despite an initial approach from the Matildas (where she wouldn’t have been the first-choice keeper at the Olympics), she has dedicated herself to the oval ball game instead • Last week, Sportsbeat suggested that Jack Silvagni was SOSSOS – Son of Stephen from Son of Serge – but it seems he’s received another acronym – SOJ – Son of Jo – Is he perhaps a mumma’s boy? • Things aren’t so homey on one family front though as a bitter feud develops between Swan co-captain Kieren Jack and his parents over their disapproval of his girlfriend – it has led to Kieren requesting that his parents not attend his 200th game against Geelong on Friday night – the falling out has also embroiled younger Brandon but it is disappointing such grievances were made public, particularly by the boy’s mother Donna on Twitter where she said, “@kjack_15 so sad. Dad 200 RL you 200 AFL & you dont want us there, your parents. No appreciation for all the yrs helping you get there.”

AFL PREVIEW ROUND16

BY DION HAYMAN

PORT ADELAIDE V HAWTHORN

Thursday 7.20pm, Adelaide Oval Port Adelaide has won three of its last four games against Hawthorn including both matches last year. It is the first time Port has completed the double over Hawthorn since 2009 when the Hawks were also reigning premiers. Last year in round four at Adelaide Oval, Port won by eight points, 15.9 (99) to 13.13 (91). Jay Schulz scored five goals as the Power opened with eight goals to one in the first quarter. The Hawks flew home with five unanswered goals in the last term but couldn’t make up the difference. At Docklands in round 21, Port scored an upset 22-point win, 16.12 (108) to 13.8 (86) with four goals from Chad Wingard and three from Angus Monfries and Schulz. Port led at every change and was never headed despite clinging to just a one-point lead at three quarter-time. Port also won its only other game against Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval in 2014 by 14 points. The Hawks last beat Port in Adelaide at Football Park in 2013 by 45 points. The Power leads overall 18 wins to 13.

GWS GIANTS V COLLINGWOOD

Saturday 1.10pm, Spotless Stadium GWS has yet to beat Collingwood in four attempts but will fancy its chances in western Sydney this weekend. The Giants’ only ever looked like upsetting the Magpies once and that was in 2014 at the Showgrounds when they led at every change and still had a 10-point lead at the 18-minute mark of the last quarter. However, goals to Ben Sinclair, Josh Thomas and Steele Sidebottom left the home side disappointed. Collingwood won 11.9 (75) to 9.13 (67) with three goals to Thomas. Their other three meetings have all resulted in conclusive wins to the Magpies. In 2012 at the Showgrounds, Collingwood won by 120 points with six goals from Travis Cloke and five from Dane Swan; in 2013 at the MCG, Collingwood won by 40 points and they won by 42 points last year at the MCG after another five goals from Cloke.

GEELONG V SYDNEY

GOLD COAST V BRISBANE

Geelong has won 13 of its last 17 games against Sydney but the Swans have actually won two of the last three. However, the Cats won their last clash in round 19 last year in Geelong by 32 points. Sydney led by 13 points at half-time but was outscored by eight goals to one after the main break to lose 14.11 (95) to 9.9 (63). Tom Hawkins finished with four goals. The Swans two recent wins against Geelong have been emphatic. They won by 110 points at the SCG in 2014 with five goals from Kurt Tippett and four from Buddy Franklin. Then they won by 43 points at Homebush in round seven last year. Luke Parker (five goals) and Franklin (4.5) were the top scorers that day. The Cats though have won their last three home games against Sydney since the Swans’ last win there in 2011. Sydney narrowly won all four quarters that day in a 13-point win.

It’s hard to know if the Q-clash has ever been less highly anticipated than this meeting on the Gold Coast. The two sides combined for just seven wins in the Suns’ first season in 2011 and two of them were of course against each other. That may still take some topping this season with the two Queensland clubs again plumbing the depths of the AFL ladder. Brisbane leads this fixture seven wins to four and were last start winners at the Gabba in round four when they kicked 14.23 (107) to the Suns’ 14.13 (97). The most bizarre thing about that result is that the Suns went into the match unbeaten after three wins in second place on the ladder while the Lions were winless and rock bottom. Both sides have two wins against each other at Carrara but Brisbane hasn’t beaten the Suns on the Gold Coast since 2013, having lost the last two by 53 and 64 points.

Richmond and the Western Bulldogs haven’t crossed paths since round two last year when the Dogs won by 19 points at the MCG, 12.13 (85) to 9.12 (66). The Bulldogs led at every change with Tory Dickson booting four goals. The Bulldogs have 10 wins and a draw from their last 14 games against the Tigers. Richmond’s three wins in that stretch came in a row from 2012-13 and were all by at least 10 goals. The Tigers won by 70 points at the MCG in 2012, while in 2013 the margins were 67 points at Docklands and 60 points at the MCG. Jack Riewoldt finished with two bags of five goals and one of three. His average of three goals a game against the Dogs is surpassed only marginally by his returns against St Kilda, Port and GWS. Both sides have six wins and a draw from 13 meetings at Docklands.

Fremantle has won its last seven games against Melbourne and in their last half dozen matches, the Demons’ chief problem has been scoring. Not once did Melbourne exceed 54 points in those clashes, and four times, it failed to pass 40 points. The Dockers have reached the century all but once and have won four games by more than 10 goals with two of those wins being by more than 15 goals. Hayden Ballantyne has enjoyed the sight of the Demons more than most and has 19 goals from his seven games against them despite going goalless when they last met last year in Perth. Fremantle won that game by 54 points, 17.6 (108) to 8.6 (54), after scoring 5.1 to 0.1 in the first quarter. This game is in Darwin where the sides also met in 2014, resulting in a 63-point win for the Dockers. Melbourne has just two wins from its six transferred home games to the Top End.

CARLTON V ADELAIDE Sunday 12.40pm, MCG

Carlton has four wins from its last six games against Adelaide, although, the Crows beat the Blues last year at the MCG by nine points after leading at every change. Levi Casboult put the Blues in front early in the final term but the Crows steadied with two late goals from Josh Jenkins sealing the win for the visitors 14.15 (99) to 14.6 (90). This will be the fourth consecutive meeting between these teams at the MCG and the sixth in a row in Melbourne. Carlton hasn’t played the Crows in Adelaide since winning by 48 points at Football Park in 2010. This is also the seventh straight season these teams have been drawn to meet just once. They’ve now met five times at the MCG with Carlton leading three wins to two. Adelaide’s only other win came in 2008 by 30 points. Overall, Carlton leads 18 wins to 16. Former Crow stalwarts Steven Trigg and Neil Craig are both now at Carlton while Eddie Betts has returns of four goals and one goal in his two games against his former side.

WEST COAST V NORTH MELBOURNE Sunday 2.50pm, Domain Stadium

North Melbourne’s bold 2015 premiership assault came to an end in the second preliminary final at Subiaco when it lost to West Coast by 25 points. North had led by 20 points at quarter-time and still by five at the main break but the Eagles kicked 7.12 to 3.6 after half time to win 10.20 (80) to 7.13 (55). It came after North’s back-to-back wins in 2014-15 against the Eagles. North is no stranger to this fixture. This is its eighth trip to Perth from its last 10 games against the Eagles. The other two have been played in Hobart meaning these sides haven’t met in Melbourne since a 2010 clash at Docklands. Of those last seven games at Subiaco, North has won just two – in 2010 by 16 points and in 2014 by 38 points. The Roos have just five wins from all 18 games against the Eagles at Subiaco. While at all venues, the Eagles hold sway 24 wins to 21.

ESSENDON V ST KILDA

Sunday 4.10pm, Etihad Stadium St Kilda has won its last two games against Essendon rather handsomely. The Saints won by 110 points in round 14 last year when Josh Bruce finished with five goals and Nick Riewoldt four. They won by 46 points in round nine earlier this year when Bruce scored another five goals. The Saints haven’t won three in a row against the Bombers since 2008-09. That run also included a 100-point victory. Indeed, St Kilda’s three biggest wins against Essendon have all arrived in the last eight years. Before 2008, the Saints had never beaten Essendon by more than 68 points (1975 at Moorabbin). Despite some recent disasters, the Bombers still have a 12 wins to nine advantage against St Kilda at Docklands.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 15

BY CHRIS KENDALL

West Adelaide v Port Magpies

North Adelaide v Eagles

Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda Stadium TV: Channel Seven

After an encouraging fortnight the Bloods were sent crashing back to earth by the Eagles in a 76- point thumping that gave them a reality check. Port defied its recent form with an ultra impressive second half that dealt a 39-point win against Central. Paul Stewart, Jimmy Toumpas and Sam Gray combined for 107 disposals, while John Butcher’s six-goal haul could easily have been double figures had he not been so unselfish at times. Two weeks back West would have been slight favorite. But last week spun the game on its head, with the Magpies aiming to finish the season strongly and the Bloods taking a few steps back last week. If some of the Port prime movers are allowed the same latitude as last week, then it is hard to see the home team doing enough to get the points here. At present West does not look to have the defensive weapons to hold Port here.

TIP: Port Magpies 25-36

Saturday 2.10pm, Prospect ONLINE: Live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SANFL App

North’s slender finals chances ended last week after a secondhalf fadeout against Adelaide, despite the best efforts of Matt McDonough and Alex Spina. The Eagles were clinical against West, rarely allowing it any space to create and having 127 more disposals in a 76-point loss, with Luke Jarrad winding back the clock with 38 disposals. The Roosters look capable of a couple of upsets before the season is out and while their best takes it up to most teams, the Eagles are performing at a rare level this season and must be close to premiership favorites. If North can work the ball with the same precision it has demonstrated many times this year and seize its chances, it will take it right up here. But the Eagles seem to have a bit more in hand.

TIP: Woodville/West Torrens 13-24

Adelaide v Sturt

Glenelg v South Adelaide

Saturday 2.10pm, Gliderol Stadium ONLINE: Live stream at www.sanfl.com.au and the SANFL App

Saturday 2.10pm, Thebarton Oval RADIO: Life FM

A season heading in different directions for the southern clubs. Glenelg is working toward finishing 2016 on a positive note without finals action, while South is preparing for September after an impressive second half against Norwood that brought it the points to move two games clear in third spot. There is little doubting the Tigers’ tenacity around the ball, with a number who can work the ball from the stoppages. But they struggle to consistently convert their opportunities in the forward 50, particularly with Clint Alleway missing through suspension. The stakes for the Panthers are building each week and with so many of their second-tier players stepping up each week to spread the load, the task for Glenelg looks a little beyond it here.

SANFL returning to Thebarton, with Adelaide still in touch of a double chance, as its impressive second half last week against North gives it a sniff. Sturt used the chance to freshen up with the bye for a tilt at holding top spot, sitting a game clear of the Eagles and playing an impressive brand of football that many opponents are struggling to counter. Both clubs match up fairly evenly around the ground but the speed of the Double Blues’ ball movement this year has been a real hallmark to their ability to withstand most challenges thrown at them. Adelaide can play in fits and starts – as noted against Central a fortnight back and parts of the first half against North – but can’t afford to drop its guard too heavily here. Overall, Sturt seems set to hold its break at the top.

hebarton Oval will host a SANFL game for the first time in four seasons when Adelaide hosts Sturt in a key Round 15 fixture.

While Adelaide’s SANFL outfit is the home team, the Double Blues will take the gate proceeds and catering revenue in a joint decision with the Crows to move the game from Peter Motley Oval. With school holidays under way the match will also provide activities for children with Adelaide and Sturt players available to sign autographs after the game. Sturt zone junior clubs Unley Jets and Glenunga will be involved in several curtain-raiser matches from 10.15am. The league game kicks off at 2.10pm. Thebarton Oval was last used for a SANFL League match in Round 1, 2012 when Woodville-West Torrens played Port Adelaide.

Davison stays under the radar I t’s a new position to be in for Will Davison but heading into the second half of the season, the Teckno Autosports driver is a championship contender.

“So right now we are just cruising under the radar but hopefully we will shock a few people in the back half of the year and still be in the hunt.

A better than expected start to the 2016 season has Davison believing he could be a player in the title chase come the end of the season, starting with a good result at this weekend’s Townsville 400.

“I like flying under the radar to be honest, I prefer not really being talked about.

A new team has brought a fresh look at things for the former Mercedes-Benz driver now back in a Holden.

Davison played down his championship prospects at the beginning of the year, but has gradually improved his placing over the first of the season that he has now bobbed up at a contender.

“I think we have shown this year that a small little team can be a championship challenger,” he said.

“Next thing come December and you’re in the fight. That’s what I’d love, to still be there in the hunt come the end of the year.”

“The first six events were always going to be settling in … it’s been pretty good and I think as a team we are growing together.

His shock win on the Sunday at Symmons Plains suggested he would be one to watch, taking the championship lead from that weekend in Tasmania.

“I can improve a bit in the car and our pit stops and strategies will get better as well, so as a team we have a bit of room to move which is exciting.

Since then he has slipped back to sixth in the driver’s title, but he is just 123 points off the pace being set by Red Bull driver Jamie Whincup.

Davison has remained consistent though, missing the top 10 only twice in the next eight races.

“I am loving my racing, just going to every circuit knowing that I have a good shot,” he said. “This year is all about settling in, trying to be consistent and trying to grab the results when they are there in front of us.”

He will be encouraged by his form at Townsville too, leading home then-teammate Mark Winterbottom in 2013, as well as claiming a second in 2009 for the Holden Racing Team and three thirds (2014 for Erebus and 2012 and 2011 for Ford Performance Racing). “I go there certainly keen to keep that consistency going, that’s all I keep saying,” he said. “I have been nibbling on the back of the podium the last three events straight, so I am pretty keen to get back up there, but I know if you keep knocking out top fives you are going to get back on that podium.”

Anna Meares to carry flag at Olympics

C

ycling legend Anna Meares will be the Australian flag bearer at the Rio Olympics opening ceremony.

Meares will be the second cyclist to bear the flag after Dunc Gray in Berlin at the 1936 Games. “I am humbled and want you to know how proud and honoured I am to be the Australian flag bearer and lead our Olympic team in Rio,” Meares said. “For me, a country girl, a coal miner’s daughter, to become the second cyclist in history to be flag bearer for this country leaves me very emotional and proud.”

achieved and I have done, carrying the flag for Australia is the greatest honour.”

Meares won the 500m time trial in 2004, her Olympics debut.

The AOC broke with tradition by naming the flag bearer a month out from the Games rather than at the Olympics prior to the opening ceremony.

In January 2008, Meares crashed in a World Cup keirin and suffered a neck fracture that went within millimetres of crippling or even killing her.

Australia’s chef de mission Kitty Chiller, who made the announcement, said Meares was an inspiration to all Australians and would take on the role with commitment and passion. “(Meares) is the epitome of what our team represents - respect, humility and excellence,” she said.

Meares is the only Australian woman to have won two Olympic cycling gold medals.

“(She) is a role model to many across all sports and in the community.”

“When you look at history, there have been very few Olympians, fewer Olympic champions and again, fewer flag bearers,” she said.

This will be Meares’ fourth and final Olympics.

“I dreamt of being an Olympian, of being an Olympic champion but never contemplated being a flag bearer. Of all of things I have

The 32-year-old is already the only woman in Australian cycling history to have competed at three Olympics. In Rio, she will become just the third woman to compete in track cycling at four Olympics.

She famously recovered in time to win sprint silver later that year at the Beijing Games. Four years ago, Meares partnered with Kaarle McCulloch to win bronze in the team sprint at London. After a poor ride in the keirin, Meares capped her fierce rivalry with British great Victoria Pendleton by beating her in the sprint gold medal ride-off for her second Olympic gold medal. Meares will again ride in the sprint, team sprint and keirin at the Olympics. The confirmation of Meares as flag bearer came a day after most of the Rio cycling team was named. base in the same manner. Attention is certainly well back on the players now so the likes of Tom Hurley, Craig Holm and Kieran Holland will be committing strongly from here on.

Finals aspirant Adelaide University became its elusive victim and it will be hoping the desired confidence boost can raise it out of the demotion pit.

The relegation pressure remains with the Magpies following their loss to Tea Tree Gully last week.

The Sharks will need a feeding frenzy, though, with at least two wins required over the next seven weeks.

A final focus will be on Saturday’s enthralling encounter between first and third on the premiership ladder.

Salisbury North now awaits the likes of Jack Enright, Michael Gautesen and Tim Broadbent.

Prince Alfred OC can secure a valuable toptwo finish with an away win over Tea Tree Gully which will be out itself to eliminate the gap atop the ladder and create an enticing top-three contest over the remaining rounds.

The Hawks, still in the finals hunt, found ladder leader Prince Alfred OC too strong last week but after its first win, Henley could offer similar challenges. Adelaide University remained in fifth spot despite the loss but its next failing will see it fall off its finals perch. The Blacks can respond against Unley Mercedes Jets who threw everything at Payneham Norwood Union last week but were unable to find a way past. With the Sharks producing a win, the Jets are more at risk if they keep losing. The Falcons will clash with Goodwood Saints this week and all at Payneham Norwood Union including last week’s best Jon Giannini, Chase Bower and Jack O’Leary need to lift further for the once benchmark of the top flight.

A boost of confidence from its first win of the season could encourage Henley to rise from its current demotion pit. Thunder cracks open season

P

ortland appears ready to dislodge itself from the relegation zone after levelling with eighth-placed PHOS Camden last week.

The Thunder stormed to a convincing 62-point victory over Broadview to add extra pressure on sides just above it on the Division 2 ladder, especially now that they are also just one win and percentage outside five. Portland hosts second-placed Sacred Heart OC on Saturday and Dale Laslett and Tom Oates can achieve anything at home. SHOC highlighted its potential threat to Modbury’s flag favouritism with a 61-point win over then third-placed Old Ignatians. Mitchell Parr and Lachlan Button could be a thorn in the Thunder’s side this week though. The Tigers were lucky to stay in fifth spot following the surprise defeat but other results

It doesn’t get easier for Gaza this week as it must host top side Modbury.

Broadview heads to Scotch College on Saturday to face one of the sides that would love to depose it from the top five.

With eyes on both ends of the ladder, the Eagles have become decidedly more anxious but win and there will be no worries about what is happening below them.

Scotch OC would eagerly give the Tigers more pain like it served SMOSH West Lakes last week.

The Hawks though aren’t showing any favours to any opposition and Chris Burns and Sam Hofmeyer won’t be doing so here either.

William Thorpe and Max Marslen will make it hard for their visitors.

PHOS Camden will be looking for a valuable win over bottom side SMOSH West Lakes.

SPOC will be difficult to remove from the double chance position now but its weekend opponent in rival Old Iggies will want it back. It will be another tense contest for Sam Roberts and Jordan Lockwood of St Peters OC to prove their premiership credentials.

Chics, Kings set for royal battle

k

ilburn and Pembroke Old Scholars are viewing life this season from contrasting positions of the ladder. The Chics are bottom and need to win soon to have any hope of avoiding relegation. Last Saturday they went down to Gepps Cross by 11 points after a gallant struggle with Max Doherty, Shane Souter and Stephen Scally leading the way. Pembroke, second, looks safe for the double chance - its 51-point win against Mitcham last week impressive after quarter time. Fraser Pinkney, Ben Williams and Charles Canny played well. The Kings to reign by 48-64 points.

after trailing at half time. Daniel Mykytyschyn, Matthew Sawilski and Ashley Benz led from the front. The Seaton boys by 28-42 points.

Seaton Ramblers and Gepps Cross meet in the battle of the Rams. Seaton was far too strong for Walkerville, cruising in by 70 points with Darren Tremaine, Giuseppe Muscara (four goals) and James Barclay leading the way. Gepps held out Kilburn by 11 points

Mitcham and Golden Grove meet in another key match up as far as potential finalists are concerned. The Hawks were beaten easily by Pembroke last week with Daniel Loots, Bryan Towers and Dennis McEvoy leading the way. Golden Grove’s one-point loss to

Plympton and Flinders Park clash in a vital game for both sides. The Bulldogs pulled off a strong one-point win against Golden Grove with Adrian Tan, Brodie McLeod and Max Scott leading the way. Flinders Park has hit a rough patch in form, last week kicking a paltry 2.3 to lose to Athelstone by 71 points. Matthew Morrell, Jack Rogers and Kieran Johanson were among the best players. Plympton needs to win but Parks can’t be dismissed and could get in by 12-26 points.

Plympton may have cost it a chance to play finals but Corey Pressler, Joshua Ingram and Oliver Graham tied hard. Mitcham, at home, by 16-32 points. Walkerville and Athelstone are rivals from way back. But this week the sides meet quite wide apart on the ladder. Walkerville, ninth, could only kick 3.14 against Seaton Ramblers last week with Thomas Hewitt, Damien Hutchings and Rory O’Brien among the best. Athelstone has been outstanding so far this season, last week crushing Flinders Park by 71 points. Jonte Bates, Matthew Mauriello and Justin Sheedy starred. The Raggies by 50-64 points. Heat’s on for Demons, Dragons

T

op place on the ladder awaits the winner of the Eastern Park/Westminster Old Scholars game on Saturday.

Eastern Park has been dynamic with 69 goals in the past three games. The Demons crushed Pooraka last week by 78 points with 28.14 as Shawn Mansell (10 goals), Ricky Butler and Brad Woodard dominated. Westminster Old Scholars nearly cost itself the game with poor kicking for goals against bottom side Kenilworth with 9.22 but it won by 12 points. Thomas Easton, Matthew Newman and Frazer Goodes led the charge. A great game on the cards but the Demons look strong at home by 14-26 points. Edwardstown and Pooraka meet at Edwardstown, the old rivals from years gone by set for another tight, absorbing contest. Towns held out Salisbury by seven points last week to hold fourth place with Brinley Duggan, Toby Case and Sam Elliott among

the shining lights. Pooraka kicked 16.8 but it was well short of Eastern Park’s 28.14, Drew Hosking, Adam Langford and Tyson Barnes looking strong. Towns can virtually book their finals place with a win and should do that by 14-28 points.

Colonel Light Gardens and Salisbury also face a crucial contest in the sixth versus fifth game. CLG has been around the mark in this higher grade, last week going down to North Haven by 26 points. Nicholas Belfield, Emmett Wood and Ty Corey were the primemovers for the Lions. Salisbury went down to Edwardstown by seven points at home last week as Nathan Kennedy, Shaun Rowe and Patrick Keenihan tried hard to get their side home. Salisbury just might have the edge to consolidate its place in the top five by 10-22 points. Kenilworth and Hope Valley occupy the bottom two positions on the ladder but the match means plenty for both sides. The

Kookaburras, still searching for their first win of the season, did a fine job to push Westminster OS to a 12-point decision with Andrew Liverton, Peter Diamandopoulos and Blake Moser leading their side well. Hope Valley had the bye last week and before that lost to the Dragons by 40 points. Tempting to go for Kenilworth but the Demons look to have the depth by 14-28 points. North Haven, which sits third with nine wins, has the bye.

the third quarter to practically steal a thrilling four-point trumph from Blackfriars OS.

It’s as simple as that for both clubs which could be one win outside the top five or three wins in arrear, depending on the results of their home clashes against Smithfield and Rosewater on Saturday.

The Demons jumped into their opponent’s second spot with the win but Kade Boase and John Rowswell won’t want an immediate slip-up after that great performance. However, CBCOC must win to stay in the top five so will be hoping for a slightly susceptible opponent, still basking in previous glory.

The Dragons got over an improved Pulteney by 18 points but it was still an important win to keep their remote finals dream going at least another week.

Achieving an inspiring 13-point away win over Smithfield would have Adam Glenn and Jarrad McDonald buoyed for another tough encounter this week.

It will be a tougher match for Matthew Wheaton and Ben Rawlings this week but they have been resilient at home throughout the season.

Hectorville and Blackfriars OS should bounce back quickly with their next contests against likely relegated pair Pulteney and Elizabeth respectively.

The Rams used Elizabeth as fodder last week to prepare for the tough road ahead if they are to pull off a remarkable finals run. The efforts of Guy Ward and Sam Venning will need to grow as each week gets harder. The Bulldogs showed that they could still be finals contenders following an astounding 33-point victory over ladder leader Hectorville last week. A win here could put Rosewater into the five after this round which should see Adam

rahma Lodge and Trinity Old Scholars look set for a battle royale in the fourth versus sixth contest. Brahma Lodge was beaten by Fitzroy by three points as Ryan McKee led his side’s best players. Trinity also lost, going down to Mitchell Park by 35 points at home. Alex Cotter kicked three goals. Tough to pick but Brahma Lodge can win by 16-32 points.

Woodville South and Fitzroy are in a second versus eighth match up. The Cats have been solid, last week beating Houghton Districts by 66 points. Brett Hains led a long group of top players. Fitzroy showed grit to beat Brahma Lodge by three points, 16.13 to 15.16 as Nicholas McAskill led the way. The Cats look strong by 34-48 points.

West Croydon and Mawson Lakes lock horns in a top versus fifth match up. The Hawks have been dazzling for most of the season, last week beating Ingle Farm by 33 points with Stanley Freeman best. Mawson Lakes held out Adelaide Lutheran by 17 points as Nathan Delbridge stood tall. Hard to see West Croydon losing at home – the Hawks by 38-52 points.

Adelaide Lutheran and Houghton Districts appear evenly matched in the bottom versus ninth contest. Both sides are on three wins with just 1.06 percent separating them. Adelaide Lutheran lost to Mawson Lakes by 17 points last week with Shane Hickey starring for the Bulldogs. Houghton Districts lost to Woodville South by 66 points last week with Alex Bray best. The Bulldogs, at home, by 12-26 points.

Mitchell Park and Ingle Farm, while six wins apart on the ladder, should provide a top game at Mitchell Park. The Lions have been in great touch recently, last week’s 35-point win against Trinity Old Scholars an indicator of their improvement. Travis Hyde stood tall with six goals. Ingle Farm fell to West Croydon last week by 33 points with Ian Pryor among the best. No surprise to see the Lions get up but the Farmers just get the nod by 8-20 points.

ALDI Division 7 Finals prayer for Saints

S

t Pauls OS can consolidate its finals berth with victory over winless Payneham Norwood Union on Saturday.

The Saints are sitting precariously in fourth spot as two challengers, Adelaide University and Unley Mercedes Jets, remain on their tail. They recorded an 18-point victory over Flinders University last week to move one step closer to playing finals football. Percentage will prove crucial and St Pauls’ is down on those around it. Sean Bockman, Scott MacIntyre and Nick Morasca will need to be at their punishing best this week. The Saints are a game ahead of their closest rivals and have a bye after a possible deciding contest against the Blacks next week. Adelaide University meets Unley Mercedes Jets away on Saturday to maintain pressure on the Saints.

OLYMPIC STAR WATCH

15 SPORTSBEAT // 7 JULY 2016

However, in London four years ago, Australia did not have a competitor make the final.

Move on four years though and Australia is back on the verge of achieving success in its prestige event. Mackenzie Horton, or Mack as he is known, could become the country’s next ‘Superfish’. Well, he has been likened to Clark Kent outside the pool with the thick-set glasses hiding his true strengths, although he requires prescription goggles to see the black line under the water. Horton missed selection for the London Olympics after finishing second at the national trials, failing to produce a qualifying time, but it spurred him on further. A silver medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games hailed his arrival on the international stage. He even broke the junior world record with that swim, previously set by fellow Aussie Grant Hackett, and his times have continually come down since to suggest he will be one of the top contenders in Rio. He eclipsed the 15:40 mark at the Australian Championships in April, which saw him leapfrog Kieren Perkins as the second best Australian in the 1500m on times.

It was a time that would have also earned gold at the 2015 World Championships and silver at the 2012 Olympics.

The 20 year-old from Melbourne has also proven his competence in the shorter distance of the 400m freestyle, qualifying for that event too with an impressive trial swim that saw him overtake Hackett into second place on times. He sits only behind the great Ian Thorpe now in the 400m. Horton will top off his first Olympic experience by joining the gold medal potential 4x200m relay team as well.

10. Who went bogey, double bogey, par, bogey in a spectacular collapse over the final four holes at the Bridgestone Invitational?

Horton began swimming as a 10 year-old to get over his fear of the water and by 13, he had already broken his first Australian record. He faced first international competition at the 2012 Junior Pan Pacific Championships where he broke the Pan Pac record for 1500m and since then he hasn’t looked back. His greatest challenge in Brazil is set to come from Italian Gregorio Paltinieri, who posted the second best time for the event of all-time in May. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

IT’s a joke JACK AND JILL HAVE JUST CLIMBED L’Alpe d’Huez, one of the steepest peaks in the French Alps on their tandem. “Phew, that was a tough climb” said Jill, leaning over, breathing hard. “That climb was so hard, and we were going so slow, I thought we were never going to make it.” “Yeah, good thing I kept the brakes on,” said Jack, “or we’d have slid all the way back down!”
