The Next Generation Footballer

W

hen Anthony Koutoufides entered the scene in 1992 the football world was abuzz about the new age footballer. He wasn’t just a key forward or defender, but had the ability to also run in the midfield because of his athleticism. He became the archetype footballer whose endurance would allow him to run all day and not tire. His height, at 191cm in an onball role, would prove damaging against smaller opponents. We really only got to see two stellar seasons (2000 and 2001) from the big Greek though as hip and knee injuries curtailed his career, but the modern-day footballer had evolved. Surprisingly, it has taken nearly two decades before we have seen another player of his type in the form of Nathan Fyfe. Fyfe has transcended the ideals of the next generation footballer even further with his freakish attributes. His ability to win the ball in difficult situations, get out of trouble with consummate

ease and just simply never stop running makes him near impossible to contain, especially at 190cm too. Fyfe did a post-match interview after last Thursday night’s clash where he wouldn’t have even blown a candle out. He is a player who seems to have reached new fitness levels again.

Fyfe comparisons and at the same height as well. Cripps appears the frontrunner for this year’s Rising Star award while Fyfe’s talents could be recognised with the Brownlow. Clubs are now looking for more of these types of players to draft when looking at the different competitions around the country.

No wonder he is the talk of the league and he’s only 23. The scary thought is that he could improve more.

The latest being heaped high praise for posing a similar style is Dandenong Stingrays’ and Victorian Country’s Jacob Weitering.

Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield can be compared similarly with his class allowing him to play both ends of the ground as well as bullocking through the middle.

Along with his Vic Country teammate Josh Schache who is more a key position player, Weitering took the recent national under-18 championships apart.

However, even he is not at the level of Fyfe.

At 195cm, he controlled the centre half back position, but also moved forward at times and was even given roles on the wing.

Another gaining much focus at present is Carlton’s Patrick Cripps. Only a youngster at 20, Cripps already has taken to the rigours of AFL with aplomb. His composure around the ground defies his age and his work at the stoppages has quickly seen many make the

There will be others on recruiters’ list as well as they look for this new style of footballer to take their club to the next level. As fans, we will simply be able to marvel in what these players have to offer. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Fractured season

T

of the defence. However, it mainly comes down to the existing squad to be more settled with their ball use by hand and foot or better sides than the Lions will exploit them at a far greater expense.

he bone fractures sustained by key midfielders Rory Sloane and Brad Crouch have really defined Adelaide’s season so far.

Geelong will be an opponent on Sunday at Adelaide Oval that will not give the Crows much time to think so it must come from instinct.

The pattern of games over the course of the year has been quite fractured as well, with no real fluency being achieved, especially with the three bye weekends.

The Cats’ pressure won’t make it easy. This will also enforce the need to ensure goal-kicking is not a deterrent again as well.

However, it has also been the style of play of the Crows that has been fractured in recent weeks.

There seems so much work is needed to improve Adelaide’s game in such a short time but other sides have proven it can be done.

The season began in a blaze of glory with impressive performances against North Melbourne and Collingwood but something seems to have broken since.

Making it just as hard for its opposition is a definite starting point while not giving away a four-goal lead in the opening minutes is imperative.

In those opening two clashes, the Crows’ skills, run and intensity at the contest were at an all-time high. But they have slowly diminished in the weeks following so much so that their skills are now the worst in the league. They have lost the ability to create. The fact that they showed it at the beginning of the season means it is within them to display high class attributes, it’s just missing at the moment. The players seem to be rushing everything they do and lacking composure to steady themselves and make their disposals count. Whether it is perceived pressure from the opposition or just too scared to make a mistake when with the ball is actually causing them to make mistakes, it is an area of the side’s game that must be improved and quickly if Adelaide is to make the finals and then pose a threat once there. Some players have passed their used by date where this is concerned though. As coach Phil Walsh expressed last week, changes will have to be made. Unfortunately Brad Crouch will not be available to replace Sloane and so another option needs to be considered. That may see Riley Knight, the travelling emergency to Brisbane, get his opportunity to front for his first game. Fellow youngster Rory Atkins has also been pushing his name forward with his form in the SANFL and looks ready to debut at the same time. Otherwise it is simply going back to the already tried group of Jarryd Lyons and Brodie Martin whose kicking hasn’t been much better

The experience of Ricky Henderson could stabilise any area of the ground, whether its forward or back while the composure of young gun Jake Lever will improve the run out

AFL PREVIEW ROUND14

BY DION HAYMAN

SYDNEY V PORT ADELAIDE

RICHMOND V GWS GIANTS

Sydney has won 11 of its past 12 games against Port Adelaide including its past three in a row. The Swans also won eight in a row from 2006-12. Port’s only win against Sydney in the past nine years came at Football Park in 2013 when the Power won by 18 points, 10.12 (72) to 8.6 (54). The Swans led at every change on that night but were overrun in the final term as the Power doubled its score adding another 5.6 to 2.2. Chad Wingard kicked three goals. Their most recent meeting was in round two at Adelaide Oval when the Swans won every quarter on their way to a 48-point win, 14.8 (92) to 6.8 (44). Buddy Franklin top scored with three goals. Port hasn’t won at the SCG since 2006 when it left with a 26-point victory. The Swans lead nine wins to three on their home ground and 18 wins to seven overall. Only North Melbourne (21-9) has a better record against the Power. Geelong (19-9-1) is next best.

Richmond has been tripped up three times by Gold Coast but has had no such problems to date with the GWS Giants. The Tigers have won all four previous encounters with the AFL’s new kids. The first three were all at the Sydney Showgrounds. Richmond won by 12 points in 2012 but by a whopping 121 points in 2013 with five goals from Aaron Edwards. In round 10 last year, they won by 113 points when Jack Riewoldt booted 11.2. The Giants appeared in trouble again at half-time in the return game at the MCG in round 19 when they trailed 8.5 to 2.7, but they won the second half, closing the final margin to 27 points, losing 13.11 (89) to 8.14 (62). No-one on the ground kicked more than two goals. The Giants have won only one of their eight games at the MCG. A win for the Giants could see them return to the top eight.

Hawthorn has won its past seven games in a row against Collingwood which amounts to its longest ever winning streak against the Magpies. The Hawks had won six in a row against the Pies on three previous occasions. The Hawks have also won 12 of their past 15 against Collingwood since 2007. The Magpies haven’t looked like winning any of their past seven against Hawthorn with their smallest margin of defeat being 22 points in the opening round of the 2012 season. Last year, the Hawks won by 29 points at the MCG in round 14 when Luke Breust kicked four goals and they won by 65 points in round 23 when Jack Gunston booted five and Jarryd Roughead four. Hawthorn won that game 18.13 (121) to 8.8 (56). It was Collingwood’s lowest score against Hawthorn since 2003. Collingwood’s test will also be how it recovers from last week’s seven point loss in Perth.

Gold Coast has won its past two games against North Melbourne after dropping the first three. In every game, the pendulum has swung further the Suns’ way. In 2011, North won by 59 points at Carrara with five goals from Aaron Edwards. The Suns improved by 25 points in their next clash, losing by 34 points at the Docklands in their first meeting of 2012. Another 27-point improvement saw their margin of defeat slashed to seven points at Carrara in round 12 of that same year. Another 22-point lift saw the Suns beat North for the first time, by 15 points at Carrara in their only meeting of 2013. Then Gold Coast added another 28 points to the bank when it won by 43 at Docklands last year, 18.12 (120) to 11.11 (77) with four goals from Gary Ablett. It was the Suns’ first ever win at Docklands. However, they are not travelling as well going into this encounter.

MELBOURNE V WEST COAST

For the 13th season in a row, Carlton and the Western Bulldogs are down to meet just once in the regular season. Like this one, the past seven meetings between these sides have all been at the Docklands. Carlton has won five of its past eight games against the Bulldogs including their most recent meeting last year in round five when the Blues won by 28 points, 18.11 (119) to 13.13 (91). Carlton opened with 7.3 to 3.1 in the first quarter and remained comfortable leaders at every change. Lachie Henderson finished with five goals and Jarrad Waite three while Stewart Crameri scored four for the Dogs. It was the Blues’ first win of the season after dropping their first four games. No games between these sides have been decided by less than a kick since Carlton’s two-point win in 2002. Carlton has won five of its 10 games against the Dogs at Docklands.

West Coast has won its past seven in a row against Melbourne – one shy of its best winning streak against the Demons of eight straight wins from 1994-97. The Eagles have dined out on the Dees in this latest sequence, winning the seven games by an average margin of 70 points. Three wins have been by more than 90 points – the past four by at least 66 points with West Coast plundering 88 goals in those four games. The sides met twice last year with the Eagles winning by 93 points at the MCG in round two with Josh Kennedy kicking four goals and they won by 66 points in round 22 at Subiaco with Kennedy and Mark LeCras booting four. Melbourne last beat West Coast at the MCG in 2009 when it won by 20 points. This game is in Darwin where the sides have never before met. West Coast is making its premiership debut on the ground while Melbourne has won only two of its previous five games in the top end.

Essendon and St Kilda meet for the second time this season after the Bombers’ two-point win in round five at Docklands. There was less than a kick in that game at every interval with the Bombers leading by two points at quarter-time and the Saints leading by one and five points at the final two changes. Travis Colyer kicked the final goal of the game at the 19-minute mark of the final term as the lead changed for the ninth and final time. Jake Carlisle kicked four goals for Essendon while Josh Bruce finished with five for the Saints. The Saints won their only clash last year by 16 points at Docklands when Nick Riewoldt scored five goals. However, the Bombers have won six of their past eight games against St Kilda. After 19 games at Docklands, Essendon leads 12 wins to seven.

Geelong returns to Adelaide Oval for the second time in three matches, having beaten Port by 23 points in round 11. It is yet to play the Crows at the ground. In fact, the Cats haven’t played them anywhere since the opening round of 2014 at Kardinia Park when they won by 38 points, 18.11 (119) to 12.9 (81). The Cats led by just three, 10 and five points at the breaks but scored 6.4 to 1.1 in the final term. Jimmy Bartel finished with four goals in his 250th game. The Crows last beat Geelong at Football Park in 2013 when they won by two points, 14.10 (94) to 14.8 (92) when Matthew Wright finished with four goals. Geelong hasn’t beaten the Crows in Adelaide since 2011. The Crows have won 14 of their 19 games against Geelong in Adelaide (all at Football Park). Overall, the Cats shade them 19 wins to 17.

Fremantle has won a club record seven straight games against Brisbane and the Lions have failed to score more than eight goals in any of their past four. The sides met twice last year. The Dockers won by 83 points in round 14 at Subiaco with five goals from Hayden Ballantyne and they won by 58 points at the Gabba in round 22 when Ballantyne booted another three along with Michael Walters. Brisbane went goalless in the first quarter of both matches against Fremantle last year. The Lions last beat Fremantle in 2009 when they won by 15 points at Subiaco – the last of their record five wins in a row against the Dockers. Fremantle leads 10 wins to five at home, having won the past four since that defeat in 2009. Since 1995, both sides have taken 13 wins from their 26 meetings. SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 12 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

GLENELG V STURT

NORWOOD V CENTRAL DISTRICT

While it has been a difficult season for Glenelg, it will draw positives from the biggest upset of the SANFL season to date, knocking over Norwood last week. The Tigers’ desperation, clinical attitude and willingness to put their body on the line throughout was great reward for a long suffering supporter group that has had so much frustration over the past few seasons. Sturt’s approach against South was in near complete contrast, with a distinct lack of pressure when it counted and too many key movers well held in the vital stages. If it is not careful, its finals chances will slip away. The Tigers cannot make finals, but they can certainly shape the five and this is a perfect chance to really make a stamp on the season. Hard running from the clearances and quick ball movement into the forward 50 was a feature last week, with Matthew Snook and Andrew Bradley quickly getting the ball to Jake Johansen and Clint Alleway. Sturt coach Seamus Maloney must look to restrict the space for Glenelg to move at the stoppages and its ability to win the contested ball, while still creating its own scoring opportunities.

Supporting the theory that mental attitude plays a major role, Norwood appeared to have its minds slightly off the job last week and paid the price. While early injuries certainly stymied rotations, coach Ben Warren was entitled to expect better concentration in a match that may bite the Redlegs when aiming for the minor premiership. Central had some very strong moments against the Eagles, but lacked the class edge. The younger players continue to stand up and ball magnet Chris Jansen racks up the touches, but they still need more consistency across the board. It is difficult to see Norwood taking the Bulldogs lightly, particularly after last week. It was around the stoppages that the Redlegs lost much of the ascendancy against Glenelg and while their forwards got off the leash to a degree in the last term, too many of their forward 50 entries were wide and shallow in the first three terms. Central has shown when it gets its hard running game going, it can be very hard to stop, but it’s a concern that it has not won at this ground for more than five years. The home side looks to have the edge.

NORTH ADELAIDE V PORT MAGPIES

WEST ADELAIDE V EAGLES

The Roosters season keeps going from bad to worse after another heavy loss gave interim mentor Michael Handby a tough introduction to senior coaching. One good quarter is little to write home about. The mixed season for Port continued, losing to the Adelaide Reserves for the first time. The Magpies’ ball usage this year continues to be down on their cleanness of 2014 and slipping back to fourth may make the double chance tough with their run ahead. Despite Port’s inconsistency, it just looks too hard to see North turning things around in time to bring about an upset here. While there is still a malaise after the change in coaches, there is little doubt that some senior players really need to lift their output and enthusiasm if they are to avoid the wooden spoon. They look hesitant, flat and dispirited and this is the type of football that Port would normally punish at its best. The Magpies will not get a better opportunity than this to flick the switch.

Match-of-the-round as third-placed West hosts new top side Woodville/West Torrens, with a real chance for the Eagles to gain a buffer aloft the ladder. Both sides were impressive last week, with Andrew Ainger contributing five goals for the Eagles and Jared Petrenko having 27 disposals. Kaine Stevens was a stand-put for the Bloods with 38 possessions and a five-goal final term for Shannon Green complemented Aaron Fielke’s four-goal opening half. The diversity of options in attack is making it harder for the opposition to match up in West’s forward 50 and its midfield has plenty of players capable of racking up 25 or more possessions. The same could be said for the Eagles in all facets as well, giving this contest all the hallmarks of an early finals preview. Closing down the supply to Andrew Ainger and Michael Wundke will be crucial for the Bloods, and their rebound from defence will also be crucial. Will just lean to the Eagles to grab the impetus.

South’s charge toward consecutive finals appearances gained a double boost last week, defeating its main rival for the spot, Sturt, and its opponent this week knocking off the Magpies. The positive sign for Adelaide mentor Heath Younie would be many of their better performances came from the younger players, including Rory Atkins and Harrison Wigg, which could make them more than nuisance value in the run home for opposition teams. The Panthers would be well aware of their finals equation and coach Brad Gotch will be hammering home the importance of maintaining a team-oriented focus over the closing minor round games. They still need to spread their options, especially in attack than just using Brett Eddy. Adelaide has proven adept at restricting its opponents’ options as well, but has lacked the consistency to do so for an entire game. South can capitalise on that.

ustralia and New Zealand will play cricket’s first day-night Test in Adelaide from late November.

The Third Test, running 27 November-1 December, will feature pink balls that Cricket Australia chief James Sutherland believes will hold up to match play. The Test is one of six at home for the Australians – three each against New Zealand and West Indies - from 5 November until 7 January. “We’re really confident with the work that has been done over the past few years, we have had two successive seasons of Sheffield Shield cricket where pink balls have been trialled,” Sutherland said in a statement on Tuesday. “We have worked very closely with the Australian Cricketers Association and Kookaburra in the development of the ball and its continued upgrade to make it ready. “We’re working really closely with New Zealand Cricket in giving them the right tour matches and preparation before the ultimate day-night Test which is the last of the series. “And similarly with our players. to set the pace

T

he prospect of the fantastic four lining up to contest what could be the mostexciting Tour de France in years has whet the appetite of cycling fans.

Vincenzo Nibali’s 2014 dominant victory was supposed to produce a battle royale between three strong contenders. But Nibali’s strength on the cobbles, coupled with crashes that wiped out the two biggest stars, Chris Froome and Alberto Contador, resulted in a race devoid of suspense long before the Italian rode into Paris in yellow. Froome, due to the dominance of his Team Sky in 2012, when Bradley Wiggins won, and his own 2013 triumph, is perhaps always going to be seen as a slight notch ahead of his rivals. His victories in summit finishes at Ax 3 Domaines and Mont Ventoux, where he rode away from the opposition in his ungainly and un-aerodynamic style left many stunned. On his day, Froome, 30, is considered unbeatable, but he showed weakness last year, not least in his slow recovery from crashes. The cobbles are back this year and Froome had climbed off his bike even before reaching them 12 months ago. He was nervous about them then and his nerves will not have calmed in the intervening period. Even though Froome has a slight aura more than the others, there can be no doubt Contador is the most-decorated contender. Twice a Tour winner, he won his second Giro d’Italia last month and, back in September last year, took his third Vuelta a Espana crown after a thrilling battle with Froome. Contador’s lolling style allows him to accelerate quicker than Froome and it was by stealing a march on the Briton in the final kilometre of a pair of Vuelta stages that the Spaniard managed to make the race-winning difference. The Tour will likely be won in the mountains, where it is the fourth member of the elite club, Nairo Quintana, 30, who is perhaps the strongest – going up at least. BY BARNABY CHESTERMAN – AAP

Management the key

P

layer management will be the key to success for the South Australia over this weekend’s Australian Amateur Football Council Under-23 Carnival in Hobart.

With three short games (two 20 minute halves each) over two days to decide Saturday’s finalists, South Australian coach Sean Jackson will be juggling his side around to maintain fitness and the right mix for each contest.

Mindful of the different ground sizes, Jackson has picked players that can play both tough inside football which will be required at North Hobart Oval and can also play on the outside for the bigger Blundstone Arena.

He believes he has the right balance of players covering all areas that will ensure South Australia has a major impact on the championships.

“We’re allowed to take 26 (players) with us and in each minor round game we’re allowed to play 24 so we’ll play everybody across the three games,” Jackson said.

A squad was selected earlier in the year, playing a practice match against SANFL club West Adelaide’s reserves at Easter, which it won, and added to it over the course of the Channel 9 Adelaide Football League season so far.

“On the first day, we’ve only got one game so it’s only 40 minutes so it’s not going to tax them a lot, particularly having six on the interchange bench. “They’ll probably only play 30-35 minutes at most. “The second day is bit harder we’ve got two games so we’ve got to be careful how we manage that. “The plan is hopefully win the first one (on day two) and know that we’ve made it to the final and then we can rest a few in the third game before the final but obviously that depends on the results.” South Australia faces Western Australia on Thursday followed on Friday with matches against Tasmania and Victoria, all at North Hobart Oval. The two top States will then meet in the final on Saturday at Blundstone Arena, with third and fourth playing the curtain-raiser.

The unknown will be the shorter format of the game where anything can happen which will require players to be focused from the start. “You won’t be able to run over the top of (the opposition) because the games are not long enough,” Jackson said. “So we’ve got to make sure we’ve got plenty of grunt around the ball and I think that’s one thing that I’m really pleased about in our team.

Iggies look to regain winning touch

O

ld Ignatians will be looking for a return to the winner’s circle when they take on Flinders Park at Flinders Park in a crucial game for both sides.

Flinders Park is in sixth place but is losing touch with the top five quickly, last week falling to Golden Grove by 112 points. Club stalwart David Kennewell has taken over as Parks’ senior coach from Greg Anderson who has stepped down for family reasons. Old Iggies suffered a surprise four-point loss to Mitcham last week after leading by eight points at the last change. Cameron Ortlepp, Joseph Pedler and Patrick Connelly all played well. This week looks a 48-62 point result for the visitors. Golden Grove and PHOS Camden should produce an absorbing clash at Harpers Field. Grove is sitting fourth with five wins and last week

crushed Flinders Park with Stuart Blair (four goals), Corey Pressler and Todd Sheppard among the best. The Phantoms, second, had the bye last week. Earlier in the season PHOS Camden beat Golden Grove by 92 points. The Phantoms should get home again but by 25-38 points. Seaton Ramblers and Athelstone looks a mismatch at Pedlar Reserve with bottom taking on top. The Rams can’t take a trick at the moment with last week’s 96-point loss to Pembroke Old Scholars disappointing. Aaron Cartwright, Luke Walsh and Todd Gates played well. Athelstone will be itching to get back on the winning run after an abandoned game last week when a Plympton player was injured. The Raggies here by 90-120 points. Plympton and Mitcham are struggling in eighth and seventh places respectively on the

ladder but there will be plenty of interest in this one. The Bulldogs had a draw last week with Athelstone when its player Lewis Kustermann was injured. Mitcham is on a high with a thrilling four-point win against Old Ignatians and a six-goal victory against Flinders Park the week before. Daniel Gregory, Steven Wyld and Lachlan Wilhelm were solid for the Hawks last week. Tough to pick but form says Mitcham can win again, by 14-26 points. Pembroke Old Scholars has the bye. Chics, Bulls ready for arm wrestle

P

lenty is on the line when Kilburn hosts Pooraka in a vital game for both sides finals’ hopes.

Kilburn has enjoyed an excellent start to the season with nine wins to sit just behind North Haven. Last week the Chics overcame a slow first half to beat Hectorville by 27 points with Dylan Tippett, Matthew Whelan and Scott Galbraith leading the charge. Andrew Brackstone kicked there goals. Pooraka also has had its moments, although not as consistent, and finds itself in fifth place with five wins. It fell by 41 points to Salisbury last week with Stephen Geer among the best. The Chics are looking the goods and should get home by 28-40 points. Hectorville and Hope Valley meet at Daly Oval with a win keeping one side in touch with the five and a loss creeping close to relegation territory. Hectorville matched Kilburn for a half before falling by 27 points with Sam Ritchie,

Dylan Kahl and Zachary Stephenson leading the way. Hope Valley did a fine job to kick 14.10 but Eastern Park finished too well to kick 21.19. Hope Valley was best served by Lee Duggan (five goals), Michael Stevens and Anthony Niro. Darren Mitchell kicked five goals. Tough to pick but Hope Valley narrowly 10-20 points. Eastern Park should build on its good form when it hosts Westminster Old Scholars. The Demons are fourth with seven wins, last week seeing good games from Ben McMullen, Nathan McIver (five goals) and Troy Gatto. Westminster fell to Glenunga by eight points after leading by 12 points at the last change. Russell McInerney was best. The Demons look too strong here by 38-50 points. Top meets third when North Haven hosts Salisbury. North Haven suffered a surprise loss to Kenilworth last week, ending its unbeaten run with Rory Duerden, Anthony Laurencic

and Anthony Shaw leading the way. Salisbury is travelling nicely and last week’s 41-point win at home against Pooraka saw good games from Patrick Keenihan, Alex Jolly (five goals) and Geoff Tume. The North Haven Magpies to bounce back here in a beauty by 12-22 points. Last-round winners Glenunga and Kenilworth will take confidence into this week. Glenunga won its first game of the season when it beat Westminster by eight points, Sam Abell playing a fine game. Kenilworth also stunned North Haven with a 22-point win, Blake Moser kicking four goals. The Kookaburras can win again by 22-38 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Finals fever on the rise

T

he competition is heating up in this division with the top six tightening up after weekend results.

Finals positions are on the line now and every victory will be vital from here on in. Top spot changed again with Blackfriars OS reclaiming the mantle by defeating Colonel Light Gardens in a close tussle. The Lions gained the early ascendency, taking a 20-point lead into half-time and stretching it to 27 points in the third quarter before allowing the Hounds to kick six of the next seven goals and only holding a five-point advantage at the final break.

anticipated winning, going down to Pulteney by 13 points. It could the one that cost them a finals berth so they cannot afford any more slip ups. The Navy Blues kept a slim chance to play finals alive but they will need to come home with a rush. Chris Rowlands and Chris Sampson will look to lead the way again this week against Adelaide Lutheran. Para Hills and Rosewater are in a keen battle for the double chance and Saturday’s clash between the two could be decisive in the end.

Blackfriars OS continued its run in the final quarter to take the contest by just seven points and top spot with it.

The Bulldogs may look back and rue the lost point given up because of drawing with lowly Adelaide Lutheran last week, especially handing the Big Reds a bigger buffer in the process.

Aron Flechner and Matt Brincat will now be looking to take a stronger stranglehold on the position when meeting CBCOC on Saturday.

They must win this week or that buffer will become too much to reel in.

The Dolphins remain outside the top five, despite a valuable win, beating a rising Elizabeth by 19 points. Danny Forde and Cail Harris will try to test their ex-college counterparts this week. The Eagles have another tricky encounter against Greenacres on Saturday. The Dragons are losing touch with the top five after dropping a game they would have

That will give Shane Faulkner and Shane Hanson of Para Hills greater impetus to work harder to ensure that occurs. However, a much-needed percentage boost from last week’s massive 157-point drubbing of Woodville South will have their eyes now well affixed on a possible top-two finish.

rahma Lodge faces one of the toughest contracts of the season, beating an inform Lockleys this week at home.

Brahma Lodge was no match for top side Smithfield, crashing by 132 points with Joss Denengelse leading the way. Lockleys continues to kick big scores and its 27.18 to 6.4 win against Ingle Farm last week was as good as it gets. John Rowswell, Dylan Ross (six goals) and Chris Clark led the team well. Another big win is on the cards for Lockleys by 70-84 points. West Croydon and Fitzroy are locked in a fierce battle for finals’ positions in fourth and fifth places on the ladder and should produce an absorbing battle at West Croydon. The

Hawks beat bottom side Central United by 44 points last week with Lee Walsh, Jack Sumpton and David Sawtell among the best. Fitzroy lost to Trinity Old Scholars last week at home after trailing by 32 points. Matthew Nelson, John Harding and Matthew Mancheff were key contributors for the Lions. The home ground swings it West Croydon’s way, but not by much – 14-24 points. Little appears to separate sixth side ingle Farm and bottom team Central United when they meet at Rowe Park. Ingle Farm could score only 6.4 in its 132-point loss to Lockleys with Sam Naylor among the best for the Bulldogs. Central United has improved in recent weeks and its 44-point loss to West

Croydon was good in patches. Troy Klausen was solid with four goals. The Bulldogs to win by 13-26 points. Unbeaten Smithfield looks to be far too strong for struggling Mawson Lakes and should win by 100-120 points. Trent Norton and Michael Ashby with nine goals led a long list of good players. Mawson Lakes had the bye last week but has won just the two matches so far this season. It won’t add to that number this week. Trinity Old Scholars has the bye.

Sides trying to prevent a raid

H

oughton Districts continues to show there is a distinct gap between itself and the rest of the Division 7 competition.

When on its game, no-one seems to be able to get close as even second-placed Adelaide University found out last weekend. The Raiders displayed their authority in the second half, not giving their opposition a look in after the main break when just one goal up but winning by a commanding 57 points. They have the bye this week, allowing other sides to fight for positions on the ladder below them. The Blacks will look to secure their spot in the top two though this week, with a trip to Salisbury Downs Oval to face the Tigers. It’s a game Adelaide University would expect to win but Salisbury West can prove to be a difficult prospect at home. Mitchell Park took another step to ensuring it plays finals this year with a definitive 75-point victory over the Tigers last week. The Lions mauled their opponents in the second half after another tight contest before the break.

Salisbury West could not maintain their effort after half-time as Mitchell Park took control with Stephen Tonkin, Jarrad Hyde and Chris Bradford getting on top. The Lions can almost seal their position in the top four with a win over Angle Vale, which would give them a two-win buffer on the Owls, their closest challenger. Angle Vale prepared for this crucial encounter with a conclusive 76-point triumph against Flinders University and Austin Smith, Scott Burgess and Chris Stephens will be hoping to keep their finals’ aspirations in check by making things hard for their opponents at home. The Crabs are a resilient bunch and will regroup as usual for their next contest, which sees St Pauls OS visiting Flinders University.

Women’s league growing

J

ust over the halfway mark of the South Australian Women’s Football League and Morphettville Park and West Adelaide have taken control of the Division 1 competition. The Roos and Bloods are clear front runners with a sizable three-win advantage over their nearest rival Greenacres. All will be looking forward to the clash of the top two in two weeks as well to instil title favourites. West Adelaide will be keen to take the crown from defending premier Morphettville Park. Salisbury and Modbury will fight it out for the final position in the top four, with the Magpies holding a small buffer at present. There has been plenty of talent on show during the first half of the season. Caitlin Williams, Courtney Cramey and Deni Varnhagen have been at their classy best for the ladder leader while Lisa Kennedy, Elizabeth Grosvenor and Kathryn Reynolds have displayed skills for West Adelaide. Marinet Morgan and Brooke Copeland have stood out for the Dragons, Shae Gundlach and

Paige Allan are keeping Salisbury in the mix, Nikki Thompson and Danielle Stewart have led the way for Modbury and Alana Browne and Kelly Spence have been among the action for Ingle Farm. Bloods Emma Sampson is leading the goalkicking honours with 24 from eight games with the Roos Tayla Gordon six adrift. In Division 2, Adelaide University is top of the ladder, one win ahead of Angle Vale and Port Adelaide two wins further back. Western Suburbs Hawks are struggling in their first season in the competition. The girls performing well here include Blacks Tiffany Lee, Jamilla Hull and Mariah Jones, Sarah Ellis and Margaret Varcoe from Angle Vale, Magpies’ Hayley Charity and Kirsty Moran, and Tuesday Godfrey and Aajiah Jericho from Morphettville Park’s second team. The women’s competition has been an exciting addition to the amateur league with participant numbers growing quickly and it’s fiercely fought football as well.

The A-League bosses are hoping that the start of the new season with three rounds of big match-ups will build greater momentum for the competition moving on after a stop-start fixture last season, splintered with Asian Champions League matches and the Asian Cup itself. Western Sydney Wanderers will open the season on Thursday, 8 October against Brisbane Roar at Pirtek Stadium, which will be followed by the Reds clash with the Victory on Friday, 9 October. Adelaide United will be back at its traditional home Coopers Stadium in round two, hosting the Wanderers. The Reds are also programmed to play on Boxing Day against Wellington at Coopers Stadium and New Year’s Day against Western Sydney away next season. They have 11 Friday night matches

(five at home) and one on a Thursday night on 5 November at Coopers Stadium with the rest spread over Saturday and Sunday. It is an important season for Adelaide United which is yet to win an A-League title and will be expecting success in coach Josep Gombau’s third season at the club. The season will run uninterrupted through until the grand final on 1 May. Round 27 remains flexible to account for the Asian Champions League draw in December, which will involve Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC as well as the Reds if they qualify for the group stages. “(It) is an exciting day for football fans as we begin the countdown to Season 11 of the Hyundai A-League.” A-League Damien de Bohun said. “The members and fans have consistently asked for consistency in the fixtures which we have ensured with no club playing more than two consecutive matches away during the 2015/16 Season, a huge win for the supporters of all 10 clubs.”

IT’s a joke A MAN AND A WOMAN who had never met before found themselves assigned to the same sleeping cabin on an Indian-Pacific train journey. Initially embarrassed and uneasy about sharing the cabin, the pair agreed to make the best of a difficult situation. Both very tired, they fell asleep quickly with him on the top berth and she on the lower. Around 1am, the man leaned down and gently woke the woman. “Ma’am, I’m sorry to bother you, but would you mind reaching into the closet and passing me another blanket,” he asked quietly. “I have a better idea,” she replied. “Just for tonight…let’s pretend that we’re married.” “Wow, okay,” he responded. “Good,” she said. “Get your own @#%& blanket.” After a moment of silence he farted.
