Are internationals putting best hooves forward?

W

e have probably only just only come to accept the spring international raiders coming to Australia to take home our coveted Melbourne Cup. Now they are even after our Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate, among other big prizes, while trying to pinch autumn success as well. There is no doubt we want to see the best horses from around the world race our equine champions. But are we really seeing the best? The quality is high and sometimes the Europeans or Japanese do prove themselves on our stage but many have come without the top form-lines or pedigree to compete against our top turf stars. So do all the internationals come for the right reasons? Our prize money is so good that some don’t have to be the best to still reap high rewards for simply finishing in the first half of a field in Australia’s big feature races. They can come for an allexpenses paid holiday at one of

the most idyllic times of the year and go home still with more than they arrived with. It’s like a free ‘end of season trip’ for the European stables. There are qualifying restrictions they must meet, of course, but are they as stringent as those for their Australian counterparts? Their form-line is usually hard to line-up with the Australians so should they be made to compete in at least one qualifying race here before being allowed into one of our big three classics? Over the past couple of years, we have been told that the likes of Frankel and Solow are the world’s best staying performers but we don’t see them race in Australia. Why not? The form-line of those that do come is normally compared to those topliners but we don’t actually see them here. It’s hard to believe as well that a stable as high profile as Godolphin, which has won practically all of the major races around the world, is still to celebrate success on the first

Tuesday of November. They have had 20 runners without a winner over the past 15 years, continuing to struggle to find the right type of horse for our great race. Some of the internationals now stay in Australia to continue their racing but most just make the fleeting visit never to be seen again. At the same time, when they do race here, trainers and stable bosses have realised that local jockeys are needed to ride their hopes so that their horses handle our style of racing, despite some hesitation to change from their regular hoops. With our leading jockeys now taken and knowing little about their mounts or as much as what is allowed out from the Werribee quarantine yard anyway, it becomes decidedly more difficult to align their chances. At least, the Australian owners have realised it works both ways now and are more willing to travel overseas, especially to Royal Ascot to snare back some of the riches of their prestigious carnivals. THUMBS UP

THUMBS Down

After fighting off a shark earlier in the year, it would have been understandable for Mick Fanning to fade out of this year’s World Surfing League championship.

So it’s proven we can’t rely on Back To The Future II for providing this year’s World Series champion.

However, the Australian three-time world title holder continues to surprise all with his bravery and tenacity to not only be in the water again but be leading the championship with just the season-ending Pipe Line Masters in Hawaii to decide the outcome. Fanning failed to wrap up the title in Portugal this past week but his closest rival Brazilian Adriano De Souza was unable to capitalise leaving it to the last round in December for another Aussie victory to be realised.

Declared in the 1989 movie, the much maligned Chicago Cubs would win the Major League Baseball Championships but, after having everyone in raptures for getting to the National League Central division play-offs, they could not progress to the World Series. The New York Mets now face American League champions Kansas City Royals, which lost last year’s series to the San Francisco Giants, in the best-ofseven play-offs which began on Wednesday. Does that mean flying cars aren’t going to be real either?

Gems in store for Crows and Power

A

delaide and Port Adelaide are set to take just two draft picks to next month’s AFL national draft.

However, they will be at opposite ends of the spectrum for our two local clubs. Adelaide is in a prime position to bring two class players to the club through its two first round picks at nine and 13.

draft picks by not being able to trade ruckman Matthew Lobbe. Despite the constant declarations that Lobbe was a required player at Alberton, there was a lucrative deal on the table for both clubs to be in a win-win position.

It means it will have the pick of the crop inside the top-ranking players of which many believes weakens after about 25 in this year’s draft group.

Western Bulldogs were crying out for a top ruckman to take them to that next level and placed a four-year contract in front of the Power big man and was willing to give up pick 11 for him.

The player that recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie would most like to see slip down the ranking a tad would be West Adelaide lad Aaron Francis.

However, because he was on holidays at the end of the trading period, he was unavailable to undertake a required medical so the deal fell through.

His flexibility would suit the Crows ideally, fitting in at either end of the ground although his best work at the national under-18 championships was as an intercepting defender.

It has cost Port Adelaide a first-round pick at the draft which would have been in between the two picks that crosstown rival the Crows will be taking to the selection table.

Think a better version of Brent Reilly who could even develop into a damaging strong midfielder of the Brendon Goddard ilk. That is why he is unlikely to be around at pick nine with much talk suggesting he is a top-five prospect. But if he is still around for Adelaide, there will be little discussion over the table as his name is quickly called out. The Crows will still have plenty of options for that pick inside the top-10 with the likes of strong midfielders Clayton Oliver and Charlie Curnow, or locals Ryan Burton from North Adelaide and Wayne Milera from Central District, who all have the attributes of ready-made players. Either of those would also come under consideration for the club’s next selection at pick 13 along with Darcy Tucker if the direction is to go with two talented midfielders with both picks. However, if a tall is to be added to the mix then Kieran Collins looks like the next best key defender in the draft behind Jacob Weitering who will be this year’s number one selection for Carlton. There would be two promising key forwards who could be on Adelaide’s list for calling out at this second selection in imposing Sam Weideman (the ‘Weed’ chant could return to Adelaide Oval) or mobile Harry McKay, who also presents as a rucking option. Adelaide will be cautious of Essendon and Melbourne having two picks each before its first which could thwart some of its ideas, but it will still certainly get value with whoever is picked at nine and 13. Port Adelaide would be ruing a missed opportunity to get back into the first round of

Instead Lobbe remains and the Power have picks 32 and 49 later in the draft evening. Good recruiters should still be able to find a gem or two in those latter rounds and Port Adelaide’s recruiting team, headed by Geoff Parker, has been entrusted the task of locating them.

YEAR IN REVIEW As Sportsbeat comes to a close in 2015, we have enjoyed another fascinating year of Australian success and failures on the world and national stage. • Let’s get the lowlight over and done with early – Australia lost the Ashes – that’s it! • The Aussies did win the World Cup at the beginning of the year though • On a more joyous note, Jason Day achieved a major victory taking out the US PGA and gained the number one position in the world • A local hope sprang to prominence with Adelaide amateur Antonio Murdaca earning a place at the US Masters • Australia’s big golfing events will see the likes of current world number one Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Marc Leishman competing in the Australian Open at the end of November while Ernie Els will be here for the Australian Masters • We first saw Kiwi Mongolian Khan win an Australian Derby in April before bigger fish were fried just recently in the spring • The Australian Davis Cup team made it back to the semi-finals, but found Great Britain’s Murray brothers, especially Andy, too strong

One player considered to be in the top-25 who could slide through is creative midfielder Harley Balic but athletic Aidyn Johnson, dangerous Daniel Rioli, pacy Brandon White or explosive Ryan Clarke could be their interstate onball choices. Looking closer to home, a trio of West Adelaide youngsters in Will Snelling, Tom Keough or Jaydn Brind could find themselves in Power colours or there is North Adelaide’s Stephen Tahana and Cameron Hewett, and Central District’s Chris Jansen to be considered. With Charlie Dixon coming to the club for next season, a key forward is unlikely to be on draft lists but a key defender could be. The Power’s best options could be West Australian Jesse Glass-McCasker who has had senior experience with Swan Districts (and we know how Port like a hyphenated name) or former Geelong swingman Mitch Brown who is hoping to re-ignite his AFL career after a season in the VFL. It has been a rather tumultuous year in the AFL with sadness overshadowing the football somewhat. Then when the game did resume our focus, it was really more of the same with another Hawthorn victory making it a three-peat of premierships for the mighty Hawks. • St Kilda and Richmond shared the grief over the passing of Saints captain Nick’s sister and Tigers forward Jack’s cousin Maddie Riewoldt • The whole football community came together for emotional scenes following the tragic death of Adelaide coach Phil Walsh • It also united behind Hawthorn assistant coach Brett Ratten who lost his 16yearold son Cooper in a horrific car accident • Docker Nat Fyfe rewrote the record books in winning the Brownlow medal with more likely to come his way • On the home front, the Crows soared while the Power stumbled but they are both in line for good things in 2016 • More players and draft picks moved across table during the recent trading period than ever before • Some thought the Carlton Blues should be renamed the Carlton Giants at its end

Top draftees ready to perform

W

clubs looking for tall key forwards.

idely touted as a weak national draft this year, there will be added pressure on club recruiters to find those diamonds in the rough who will stay around for 100 games or more.

Weideman, grandson of Collingwood team of the century member and premiership captain Murray, is considered to be the most imposing, having already proven his strength and pack marking ability and a knowledge of where the goals are.

The top draftees should be ready to perform from the outset though, with the amount of preparation that goes into getting a player right and the natural talent they possess these days.

Athletic McKay might be a developmental prospect at 200cm but can pinch hit in the ruck.

As usual there will be a few that no-one expected to make it come out of the latter rounds who will develop into consistent contributors and possibly become a star players, which may require some patience from clubs.

As far as key defenders go, Stingrays’ Kieran Collins is thought to be the second best behind Weitering. He restricted Schache’s influence in a match already through strong lock-down skills but he also developed his offensive drive during the season to offer more to potential suitors.

There is plenty of scope for recruiters to snare that bargain buy even in years when depth isn’t considered to be that great.

South Australian tall defender/forward Aaron Francis, who may be able to go into the middle over time, is likely to be the first local selected after being the state’s best player at the national under-18 championships.

The top-15 for next month’s AFL national draft is well known but after pick two the breakdown could come in any order. Dandenong Stingrays’ Jacob Weitering is set to be in the Navy Blue at Carlton next year when his name is called out first. The Victorian Country product is a mobile key defender with an elite ticker who can direct play from the backline and counter opposition attacks through his strong marking ability. Josh Schache, son of Laurence who played for Sturt and West Torrens before joining the Brisbane Bears for two seasons and then returned to the merged SANFL Eagles outfit in 1993–94, stands as the best key forward in this year’s draft who is set to follow in his dad’s footsteps and head to Brisbane as the second player selected. Club requirements will then dictate where players are picked from here on in. Geelong Falcons’ Darcy Parish has received a lot of interest from numerous clubs. He is considered a player who has an x-factor about him with game-changing qualities that many clubs would desire. His toughness around the ball, deft ball-using skills and pace have seen him described as a natural footballer which will push his stocks higher in the pecking order. Teammate Charlie Curnow has similar characteristics and had a knee injury not

West Adelaide draft hopeful Aaron Francis. Photo: West Adelaide Football Club curtailed his year then he would have been spruiked as a top-three contender. A burly forward, Curnow was just breaking into the midfield of the Falcons before getting injured but he highlighted his athleticism at the draft combine with impressive results in the beep test and three-kilometre time-trial. Sandringham Dragons’ Harley Balic has already met with several clubs after showing his creativeness and flexibility playing at both ends of the ground. Hard nut Clayton Oliver won the Morrish medal as best player in the TAC Cup under-18 competition by revealing his tough onball skills throughout the season. North Ballarat’s Darcy Tucker will have some value, showing zip across half-back and through the middle to set-up play coolly while his leadership skills would have been well recognised too as captain of the Rebels’ outfit. Victorian Metro’s Sam Weideman from Eastern Ranges and Vic Country’s Harry McKay from Gippsland Power looms as early picks for

South Fremantle’s small forward Callum Ah Chee is set to be the highest-picked West Australian after making the grade at senior level in the WAFL, with strong speed, goal sense and reliable ball use. There are a few New South Wales and Queensland academy selections that could alter the make-up of the draft order of clubs. Through the NSW academy program, Sydney will have the luxury of gaining the services of classy midfielder Callum Mills, who presents as highly competitive and hard-working, while GWS Giants will be aided by a few first-round academy selections such as Jacob Hopper, a strong and rugged onballer with clean foot skills, and Matthew Kennedy, a taller more mobile midfielder who marks well overhead and can go forward and be a goalsneak as well. The Queensland academy has gifted Brisbane pair Ben Keays, a ball-winning midfielder, and Eric Hipwood, a versatile key forward or defender. Other clubs can bid for these youngsters but their academy team has first right of refusal through a new convoluted points system which will play out on draft day, 24 November in Adelaide. Hewitt new Davis Cup captain

A

s expected retiring tennis star Lleyton Hewitt has been officially announced at the new Australian Davis Cup captain this week.

Hewitt takes over from interim captain Wally Masur who this year led the Aussies back to the semi-final where they lost to Great Britain in the international team’s competition. He becomes the seventh captain of the Australian Davis Cup side after Masur, Pat Rafter, John Fitzgerald, John Newcombe, Neale Fraser and Harry Hopman. Hewitt, who concludes his playing career at next year’s Australian Open in January, is the most capped Davis Cup player of all time with a grand total of 58 matches played – 42 of them singles – in 41 ties since his 1999 debut. “I’ve always made it my main priority to play for Australia ... and that’s something I want to take into my captaincy,” he said. “I’m absolutely rapt to be here and to be leading this great nation.” Hewitt had all but been anointed to the role when Rafter stepped down, which is believed

to have put a few past players, including former Davis Cup legend Pat Cash, offside with thoughts that it was possibly too quick for the newly retired star to be given the role and because he would have liked to have applied for the position. Cash’s time may still come and he has been gracious enough to wish Hewitt all the best and said he would make a great leader. The glory days of Australian Davis Cup tennis are on the verge of being relived, following the young side’s semi-final’s experience this year. Bernard Tomic, Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Sam Groth have the ability to take the Aussies on a great road to success. Their temperament is the only thing currently holding them back, which is something Hewitt will have to manage. Hewitt said it was a “great honour” to be leading the country in its next era. “For me as a player, it’s been good to be able to see those guys and how they handle different situations under extreme pressure,” he said.

Admitting that he, too, suffered from image problems early in a two-decade career, Hewitt said that he would work closely with the likes of Kyrgios and Tomic to help them find the right life and tennis balance. He hoped some of his better qualities rub off on his young stars because “there’s tremendous upside”. Another doubles combination will need to be created as well with Hewitt’s departure from the side. This could see his former partner Chris Guccione earn a reprieve or new aspiring doubles players in John Peers or Andrew Whittington fast-tracked as well as the likes of John Mailman James Duckworth, Matt Ebden and John-Patrick Smith given some consideration. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have also had experience playing doubles together. Australia begins its 2016 World Group campaign at home against the United States in March.

Sixers on a roll as Randle rules T he Adelaide 36ers face two key questions this Saturday night against Cairns at home. Can they make it three wins on end and will import Jerome Randle continue his honeymoon introduction to the side and NBL?

Nearly two weeks ago the 36ers looked to be reeling with the loss through injury of Kenyon McNeail. But up stepped journeyman Randle to play a key part in the side’s 88–79 win against the Taipans at home, Randle delivering 24 points and three assists. Randle could have been excused for having a touch of jetlag but it didn’t look obvious as the stylish guard hit the court running with early scores, a three from a long way out having the crowd jumping to its feet. The start of the second half produced a flat period where the Taipans hit back to steal

the initiative before the Sixers rallied again for a good win.

But the continued winning form of the Sixers and Randle the next night in Sydney against the Sydney Kings proved an eye-opener. With key players stepping up the 36ers recorded another solid win, 90–81. Big man Daniel Johnson scored 19 points with nine rebounds, as the 36ers saw five players chalk up double figures. Lucas Walker scored 17, Randle added 16, while captain Adam Gibson and Ebe Ere stood tall for a combined 27 points. American forward Josh Childress (although now injured) was a standout in his return from injury for Sydney with 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and four blocks. The impressive part of the 36ers’ win was

coming back from an early deficit of 18–6 when fatigue could have been a factor, after trailing 22–17 at quarter time and 33–25 mid way through the second quarter. That was when coach Joey Wright received a technical foul after complaining to the referees about a possible holding decision which was missed. The Sixers rallied and cleared out in the second half before the Kings bridged the gap with a sparkling run of three pointers. This week the trick is for the Sixers to keep the momentum up against a Cairns opponent it would have hosted just nine days apart. It would also have had a good luck at the 36ers new playbook and style. After that the 36ers face one tough trip to New Zealand where it meets the Breakers on Thursday, November 5, at 5pm.

No time to ease into series

W

hile the New Zealanders complain about the pink ball that is set to be used in the historic day-night Third Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval next month, the Aussies have far deeper concerns with their summer of cricket imminent. Australia is about to be going through a transition period that it has not experienced for nearly a decade. Missing valuable preparation with the proposed Bangladesh Tour for October cancelled, the Aussies will now enter the coming three Test series against the Kiwis off the back of the Ashes defeat in July. Although they did win the fifth and final Test in the UK, many of those players have now retired leaving a new era of Australian cricket to now begin.

The one-Test Bangladesh trip, cancelled for security concerns would have been an opportunity for Australia to gain valuable time together in development for the Aussie summer. Members of that squad were sent back to their respective state sides, mostly to New South Wales.

They will now line-up in the opening weekend of the Sheffield Shield season one week before international competition resumes again. It is not ideal and has many worried that Australia may struggle against the Kiwis, who haven’t won a series on Australian soil since 1985/86. They levelled their two-Test series in Australia in 2011/12. That is no doubt why they are already trying to divert attention away from being favourites for this series towards the use of the pink ball for the first time in a day-night Test encounter. The Black Caps are far better prepared for this cross-Tasman series, with the First Test starting next Thursday at the Gabba in Brisbane, and believe they are ready to again obtain bragging rights over their closest rivals. “We know how tough it is to win over there,” New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said. “They’ve been the world leaders for the last 20 years and that’s why, if you win over there, you deserve it. “I just think, for a New Zealand cricketer, winning in Australia is the big thing. The guys have been excited about this duel for a long time.”

Redbacks look ahead to Shield success

S

outh Australian cricket has already come through a quick resurgence by reaching the final of the one-day Matador Cup competition but now its focus must turn to bringing the Shield back to this State.

win last Sunday’s Matador Cup final, NSW only become more formidable for the opening Shield clash with opening batsman David Warner and paceman Doug Bollinger being added to the squad to face SA from Wednesday.

The confidence gained from its one-day efforts must now transfer to the four-day format of the game.

Gun fast bowler on the fringe of Australian selection Gurinder Sandhu and 2013–14 Shield player of the year Ryan Carters were just two of the big names who could not force their way in this daunting Blues outfit.

The Redbacks first-up opponent looms as a scary proposition with their conquerors of the one-day final New South Wales venturing to Adelaide Oval for a day-night Sheffield Shield encounter, in preparation for the historic Third Test against New Zealand later in November. However, it is the quality of the Blues line-up that would be of concern to the locals after experiencing their wrath last weekend. Stacked with past and present Australian international stars, including Steve Smith, Ed Cowan, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, to

He indicated it was difficult to get a gauge at this stage of what the Australian side would be like and expressed it would have probably been preferable to get it when it was “over the hill” in response to the recent exodus of senior Australian players. He declared it would be highly competitive amongst potential players to gain a spot in the side, which would make it just as strong as ever. Australian coach Darren Lehmann is confident the squad’s new additions will handle the challenges before them. With Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Chris Rogers and Shane Watson no longer around, it will be up to new skipper Steve Smith and his vice-captain David Warner to maintain enthusiasm among the new group to bring about continued success, which is simply a given with the Australian cricket team. Newcomers opening batsman Cameron Bancroft and fast bowler Andrew Fekete along with those of limited experience including wicketkeeper Peter Nevill, batsman Usman Khawaja, all-rounder Mitch Marsh and spinner Stephen O’Keefe will be expected to step up straight away. With the Australian players available though, the Redbacks can look positively at this opportunity to face the toughest line-up they will confront all year.

SA squad: Kelvin Smith, Mark Cosgrove, Travis Head (c), Tom Cooper, Callum Ferguson, Alex Ross, Jake Lehmann, Tim Ludeman, Joe Mennie, Kane Richardson, Adam Zampa, Daniel Worrall

Larkham hails Wallabies as better bet than ‘99 W

allabies great Stephen Larkham has labelled the current Australian side as better than the star-studded 1999 Rugby World Cup winners. Attack coach Larkham, one of the heroes of the team that beat France in the decider in Cardiff 16 years ago, believes Michael Cheika’s World Cup finalists are at a similar stage to where Rod Macqueen’s side were – but more primed for success. He’s also confident this Wallabies side are good enough to stun the world champion All Blacks in Saturday’s Twickenham final especially if they replicate their semi-final effort against Argentina. “I think this journey is fairly similar,” said Larkham, who was also part of the 2003

side that lost in the final to England in Sydney. “We’ve had an accelerated little growth together, whereas in 1999 and 2003 we had two years of preparation. “I’d say these boys are at the stage we were at in particularly 1999 and 2003. “But this present side are the best of the three.” Larkham’s attacking charges have played an integral role in helping the team chalk up 26 tries in the competition so far with Adam Ashley-Cooper bagging a hat-trick in the 29–15 win over the Pumas. But the former playmaker, who wore the gold jersey 102 times in a glittering career that took in four World Cups, said the team

lympic hurdles champion Sally Pearson admits 2015 has been a tough year and she’s lost a lot of confidence.

But Australia’s injured queen of the athletics track has drawn inspiration and motivation from being surrounded by a host of other female sporting stars. Pearson, the 2012 Olympic 100m hurdles champion, missed this year’s world championships after requiring surgery following a wrist injury in a Diamond League meet in June. She gave an insight into her feelings at Tuesday night’s

Women’s Health ‘I Support Women in Sport’ Awards dinner in Sydney attended by numerous female sporting champions. “I’ve had a tough year this year and lost a lot of confidence,” Pearson said. “But when I see all the faces here, it really inspires me and puts that confidence back in for next year. “I’m really looking forward to a fantastic year.” One of Pearson’s 2012 Olympic teammates and good friends, cyclist Anna Meares,

produced its most complete display to beat an Argentina side that had destroyed Six Nations champions Ireland in their lasteight clash. “We’ve had our highs and our lows in terms of defence and attack,” he said. “What has pleased me is the manner in which the guys succeeded in mixing both up last weekend. “I don’t want to focus just on my speciality but to assure myself that the overall performance of the team will be good. “And I thought it was good. SOCCER Reds season fading away C

hanges need to be made before Adelaide United’s season turns to ruins.

They are only creating limited opportunities which are going unrewarded.

It is already fading fast after just three rounds of which the Reds are yet to achieve a victory, two mediocre draws and an even worse loss to the bottom-placed Perth Glory last Sunday.

Amor said his players were disappointed with their efforts against Perth and he would attempt to “lift the mood” of the Adelaide dressing room ahead of this Saturday’s clash with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

Failing to score has become a crisis point for the side that isn’t even looking like putting the ball in the back of the net over recent weeks, including against a 10-man Victory line-up at home in round one.

The Reds have a good record at Suncorp Stadium, having won seven of their 15 visits there, and would like that to keep going.

The two goals that have been registered on the Adelaide United scorecard have been own goals from the opposition. The flair and creativeness of Josep Gombau’s time at the club has been non-existent so far but new coach coach Guillermo Amor has asserted that he will be persisting with the high-possession game style which the side is struggling with at present. Amor implored the club’s fans to have patience as the players become more familiar with the Spaniard’s game plan. “We came here to win the game and for different reasons we couldn’t get the three points,” he said. “This style is something that we want to grow…and we think it’s important to have possession and have the initiative in the game. “We have been working on it from the start of the season and for different reasons it didn’t work for us (against Perth) – this is football. “Normally the team who has more of the ball is the one who has more chances. “We will (continue to) play with three strikers and use the width of the pitch…and we expect later on some results, but we are always looking for the three points.” While players like Marcelo Carrusca, Sergio Cirio, Osama Malik and Craig Goodwin continue to dominate possession and dictate play by just passing the ball around, 525 completed passes to Glory’s 170, their ability to push forward is lacking and they certainly aren’t breaking the lines to get closer to goal.

The Roar is are second on the A-League ladder though, just behind Sydney, with two wins from its three games. Brisbane’s own Spanish influence Corona (not the beer) has had a major impact on the side in just three games with the club and if the Reds don’t control him then he could take the game apart in front of a parochial home crowd. His teammates have been in awe of the star playmaker. Former United midfielder Steven Lustica, now with the Roar, said that watching Corona do his thing had lifted the side’s performances as well. He said that it was a privilege to play alongside such a talented player. “Corona has always got time on the ball, he gets out of any situation,” Lustica said. “With him controlling the ball, it relieves the pressure and helps us a lot.” They lost to Wellington Phoenix 2–3 away last week and will be eager to bounce back at home on Saturday night. Roar coach John Aloisi said that the result proved that there was still plenty of improvement needed from his side and he will be pushing them to do better next time. He was frustrated by his side’s defensive lapses last week, which it is sure to tighten and make it harder for the Reds this week. Aloisi will ensure his players are not complacent on Saturday night.

Playmaker Marcelo Carrusca is the key to Adelaide United turning its season around. Photo: AAP defence to attack looms as a worry for the visitors. Striker Bruce Djite is likely to return to the side this week, but it is clearly up to the existing members to drive harder to generate more scoring chances of which Djite may be able to finish. Another loss could become a nightmare for Adelaide on Halloween.

Brisbane’s creativeness in being able to get into scoring positions itself will also be something Amor must be mindful of.

Without a few more points on the board soon and victories recorded to boost confidence then finals aspirations could be gone before the midway mark of the A-League season.

Spring Racing news

Who do you prefer? A t the beginning of the spring all expectations were around the internationals again winning the three features races – Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup – just like last year.

Leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has given Bondi Beach and Kingfisher their finishing touches and he wants a Melbourne Cup just as much as anybody. He already has a Cox Plate so he knows how to train a winner here.

However, as it has turned out the locals, and I include the New Zealanders in that, have taken all before them.

The other internationals in the market include Max Dynamite who visited the track this week, Godolphin’s Sky Hunter and second of the Japanese horses Hokko Brave.

Will they be able to stop the Europeans or Japanese in the big one though? Japan’s top hope and Melbourne Cup favourite Fame Game put in a stirring trial in the Caulfield Cup two weeks ago and if he shows his true form he will prove difficult to hold out.

Our Ivanhowe is a German horse and we can all remember what a German horse did last year. Trained by Australians Lee and Anthony Freedman and his run in the Caulfield Cup also had everyone taking notice.

“The best thing I know is his action,” Tamaya said through an interpreter.

Top Australian trainer Chris Waller would love a Melbourne Cup to go with his Cox Plate won last week by Winx. He has won just about every other feature event in the country and a Melbourne Cup would top off his training prowess.

“Usually he gets a bit stiff and tired after the race but he wasn’t even tired after the Caulfield Cup run. “His action is really nice and smooth.”

One can forgive Waller’s hope, Preferment’s run in the Cox Plate as nothing was running on from the back last week.

Of the British raiders, Trip To Paris’ second placing in the same race puts him right up with the top hopes.

He loves Flemington, with a flashing Turnbull Stakes victory just four weeks ago and a Victorian Derby win last year highlighting his credentials for a crack at the race that stops a nation. Waller will also saddle Who Shot Thebarman and possibly Beaten Up in the Cup.

Assistant trainer of Fame Game Masato Tamaya said that the horse had come through the Caulfield Cup in excellent shape and felt he was in better order.

A stablemate of Red Cadeaux gives punters confidence that he would have been trained to the minute for the race.

It’s been 21 years since David Hayes tasted Melbourne Cup success with Jeune, but his patience could be rewarded with two live chances.

Criterion looks like his best hope as the class in the field but whether that can equate to being able to run 3200m is another matter. “I know he broke a course record running second which would have won nine of 10 Cox Plates but I think the tempo of two miles will be more comfortable for him,” Hayes said. “He’ll show an even better turn of foot at two miles, like Jeune and Saintly did. “In the end you never really know but my gut feel is yes, he’ll run the two mile pretty easily.” Almoonqith was emphatic winning the Geelong Cup but this will be a different quality field on Tuesday. “He profiles very similar to a Media Puzzle or Americain,” Hayes said. “Bauer went very close. Dunaden was in the race (Geelong Cup) and won it. I wouldn’t swap my two for many in the race.” The Lloyd Williams factor cannot be understated, already with four Melbourne Cups to his name, and Amralah looks like his best chance this year. For what it is worth – Sportsbeat’s tip for the great race is Fame Game to beat Preferment and Amralah. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Waller hoping for an ascent, not a descent

S

“She came into this preparation much heavier than previously so even though she lightenedoff a bit after Caulfield, she’s responded well with a freshen-up and is still carrying enough condition into Saturday.”

Early money has come for Group One Thousand Guineas winner Stay With Me, but the drawing of the outside barrier has made the three year-old’s chances of beating the older mares more difficult.

However, when you are regarded as one of the toughest mares in the Australia, a quick turnaround isn’t out of the question.

Waller has kept things simple since running in the Cup, backing her work off to sharpener her up for the 1600m.

She has breeding on her side being out of blueblood Miss Finland and at the light weight were qualities cannot be faulted.

After trailing off in the Caulfield Cup two weeks ago, Royal Descent will contest the $500,000 Myer Classic (1600m) against other fillies and mares on Saturday.

“She’s a miler,” he said. “Doncasters, Epsoms, George Mains, Chelmsfords, she’s been in them all against the best horses and always run well.

Stay With Me will have to defy history to win as no three year-old has been successful in the race since its inception as a Listed event in 1988.

“She wasn’t distressed,” trainer Chris Waller said. “The one positive out of Caulfield was that Bossy shut her down when he knew she was beaten. She wasn’t punished.

“Coming back to weight-for-age against her own sex is a big help.”

Since then five three year-olds have contested the race with the best result Alinghi running second to Miss Potential in 2004 after winning the Thousand Guineas.

ome would say that finishing last beaten almost 30 lengths is not the best form to take into a top class Group One race on the purest day of racing in Australia.

Waller will also have stablemate Amicus in the Myer Classic.

Looking for value in Derby

V

ictoria Derby favourite Tarzino’s recent runs have looked like good preparation for the colt’s classic at Flemington on Saturday but he wouldn’t want to be having to make up to much ground down the straight to be finish strongly at the end of 2500m.

Derby type, the 2500 metres is uncharted territory for him and the others in the race.

Many believed Tarzino strengthened his hold on the race with his third in last Saturday’s Group Two Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

“If he’s good enough, he’ll win. If not he’ll probably run a place or something. He’s in great order.”

However, at the short price of $2.25 for the $1.5 million event, we are looking elsewhere for value.

The 74 year-old still rides Lizard Island in his trackwork and has long had a big opinion of the colt.

More than half a century after riding the first of two Victoria Derby winners, Pat Hyland has a realistic chance to take the Classic as a trainer.

Adelaide’s leading trainer Phillip Stokes is no stranger to success in Cups week at Flemington but it will be new territory having his first Victoria Derby runner.

Hyland rode Craftsman to victory in 1963 and Silver Sharpe seven years later and on Saturday he will saddle up Lizard Island. In his past two starts Lizard Island has finished runner-up in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the Group Three $500,000 Caulfield Classic (2000m). Although Hyland believes Lizard Island is a

“I dare say you don’t know until you get in the Derby, but his form has been really good and I think he deserves the chance at having a crack at it,” he said.

Last year Stokes had four wins during Cup week including the Group One Emirates Stakes with Hucklebuck who also won a Group Three race on the first day. “That was unbelievable,” Stokes said. “If we can get a winner this year I’ll be rapt. We’ll see how we go.”

Colonel Custer is his Derby runner who was unlucky in coming seventh in the Geelong Classic (2200m). He began awkwardly and settled back in the field before being checked at crucial stages in the straight. “He did well to finish where he did,” Stokes said. “When he missed the kick and went back on him, he relaxed nicely which I was happy to see because he can be a bit revvy in his trackwork. “It’s a Derby and going to 2500 metres for the first time, it will see a few of them out. “I think he can run it out, but we’ll see.” The last South Australian-trained Victoria Derby winner was Rebel Raider who caused a boilover in 2008. Others in the mix include Hayes and Dabernig’s Geelong Classic winner Extra Choice, O’Shea pair Shards and Etymology, Stuart Webb’s Get The Picture, Peter Moody’s Palace Tycoon, the Hawkes team’s Jadeer, Adam Durant’s Kia Ora Koutou and John Moloney’s Pay Up Bro.

Straight out attack on the favourite

A

nything can happen down the Flemington straight and that has trainer John O’Shea taking a cautious approach with his brilliant colt Exosphere the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m). Exosphere has been dominant in his three starts this spring in Sydney including the Group One Golden Rose which is why he is a odds-on favourite for the three year-old sprint event on Saturday. “I think it’s going to be a very competitive race,” O’Shea said. “There’s genuine speed and last year if you drew inside (barrier) six, well you might as well have stayed at home because of the northerly blowing up the straight and you needed to draw the outside. “If we got a scenario like that perpetuating on Saturday, well it wouldn’t matter what price he was or how good he was, he’s going to be vulnerable. “So we’re just hoping for a nice even run and I think whenever he gets in that scenario he’s always competitive. “We’re happy with him.” Rival trainers are plotting the downfall of the star colt. Chris Waller, Mick Price, Gary Portelli, and co-

trainers David Hayes and Tom Dabernig will be giving it a good crack.

at Caulfield, defeating fellow competitor O’Shea’s Mogador.

Waller, who has trained the past two Coolmore Stud Stakes winners with Brazen Beau (2014) and Zoustar (2013), will be represented by Counterattack and Japonisme.

“Exosphere is a champion I think,” Hayes said. “If he runs to his Sydney form we probably can’t beat him.

“I was blown away with Exopshere at Randwick,” he said.

“But it’s Melbourne, it’s up the straight and we’re in great form and we’ll race to a track record if conditions are right.”

“Early in the season it was Vancouver that was going to dominate the three-year-old races. Things change. Anything can happen.”

Sydney trainer Gary Portelli believes his talented colt Sebring Sun has the ability to cause an upset.

Countertattack comes off a last start win in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, the same formline Kuro carried into the 2014 Coolmore Stud Stakes when third behind Brazen Beau and Delectation.

Sebring Sun hit the line strongly to finish third behind Exosphere, three lengths from the champion, in the Group One Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) last month at Rosehill Gardens.

“The blinkers went on last start and he’s a different horse,” Waller said. “I gave both of them a jump-out up the straight here on Friday to give them a look around and they did everything right. “But we need Exosphere to fail.” Hayes and Dabernig will have Keen Array engaged. The son of Bel Esprit has won four of his past five starts, including his most recent win in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m)

“I take confidence out of the Golden Rose,” Portelli said. “Sebring Sun gave Exosphere a fair start and ran faster sectionals. “So we don’t want to be giving him a start. “It’s like taking on Usain Bolt from behind. “We want to be in front of him and let him chase us.” Price’s Ready For Victory is a good chance of upstaging the favourite after being around the mark in recent races without winning.

The Melbourne Cup is still one of the only leading world trophies not to adorn the cabinets of the world’s largest stable operation. Godolphin will not rest either until the famous three-handled trophy is in the hands of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, even then he will probably want more. The Blue Army, as it is known due to the silks of the Darley/ Godolphin organisation, spreads worldwide from Dubai to Europe, Australia and America where the best of equine flesh devour a quality existence on some of the most luxurious properties one could ever imagine. They have been close on numerous occasions with a trio of seconds to Central Park (1999), Give The Slip (2001) and Crime Scene (2009) and a third with Beekeeper (2002) while they were fifth last year with Willing Foe. International trainer Saeed bin Suroor has brought out three prospects for this year’s race, Sky Hunter, Secret Number and Elhaame, although only Sky Hunter is assured a start at this stage. Secret Number is 27th in order of entry which is on the fringe for the 24-horse field while Elhaame hasn’t qualified yet. Both will probably run in the either the MacKinnon or Lexus Stakes on Saturday to rise up the rankings. Sky Hunter has had only run this year winning a Group Two race over 2400m in March, when he was found to be suffering heat

stress after the race and has been sidelined since. Secret Number’s racing has been well spaced over recent years, with only three runs in the past three years. His most notable claim to becoming a Melbourne Cup chance was a second-placing in the Group Three behind stablemate Prince Bishop by two lengths but also beating past Cup runners Dandino and Red Cadeaux. Elhaame has been a consistent middle-distance galloper so the step up to 3200m is a question mark. This year Godolphin’s Australian operation has been allowed to prepare runners for the great race. Their Australian trainer John O’Shea originally had four runners Hartnell, Complacent, Hauraki, and Magic Hurricane being prepared for next Tuesday but he is down to just Hartnell. He had a promising autumn, beating Japanese star To The World in the Group One BMW Stakes (2400m) before disappointing as an odds-on favourite when fourth in the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m). Hartnell’s efforts over the spring so far have been steady, including an improved run in the Group One Cox Plate (2040m) on Saturday finishing fifth, without really pushing a case for the Melbourne Cup. Havana Cooler will be making a last ditch effort to get in the Cup as well via the Lexus Stakes on Saturday. Godolphin’s time will no doubt come to hold up the trophy that has eluded it but maybe it will be next year when that day comes.
