A-League supporters for the few games programmed at the ground. There is no doubting that Adelaide Oval has been great for this State and it should continue to be able to attract world class events that fans will strive to attend such as AFL football, hopefully Wallabies rugby matches, major concerts, and even the Crusty Demons.

he re-development of the Adelaide Oval has been one of the best things for this State and has been widely accepted by sporting fans across the country and world-wide.

Adelaide United final against Brisbane Roar in May this year and now only 19,070 at last week’s season-opener against Melbourne Victory when at least 25,000 were hoped for.

All except local soccer fans that is.

Being so far away from the action does not build much enthusiasm for fans whereas at Hindmarsh they are practically on top of the play.

Soccer fans, too would welcome a few more internationals whether that be club-based like Manchester United and Liverpool or Socceroos’ matches, especially World Cup qualifiers.

The noise factor is much louder in the confined spaces of Hindmarsh Stadium which can haunt visiting sides.

However, as far as local A-League encounters, Hindmarsh Stadium is home of the Reds and that is where they should play.

Hindmarsh Stadium is their home and that is where they believe a better atmosphere can be created with 15,000 screaming Reds supporters cheering on their side.

There may be parking and entrance issues about getting into Hindmarsh but it is still not too bad even at capacity.

Unfortunately, Adelaide United’s hierarchy has been hemmed into a corner with contractual agreements between the Stadium Management Authority and Football Federation Australia.

It has been a novelty to play soccer fixtures at Adelaide Oval.

Most have found their ideal parking spots for quick getaways anyway.

The dimensions of the ground don’t really suit the game and fans of Adelaide United have spoken with their feet to say that they would rather not play their sport at the home of AFL in this city.

The first A-League encounter at the ground in 2014 was always going to draw a crowd (33,126) as was the one-off clash against EPL club Liverpool in June this year (53,003). However, a clear message was sent to the club and league bosses that programming matches at the oval would be adverse to fans attending. The rumblings started with just 20,155 attending an

Fans know the situation and are willing to put up with it.

Problems may arise if there is also an event on at the Entertainment Centre in conjunction with a soccer fixture. But that is a rarity. When at the Adelaide Oval, parking and leaving becomes a greater concern. The same benefits provided to their AFL counterparts of free public transport and ease of access to the ground isn’t granted to

A-League bosses will continue to chase the dollar by throwing a few blockbuster clashes and any finals games the way of the Adelaide Oval. Too many, though, and Adelaide United will be the one to miss out as it could potentially lose fans who prop up the club through memberships and merchandise purchases. Not usually in a team environment, President’s Cup golfers enjoyed their own Mad Monday shenanigans dressing up for post-celebrations.

He may have won his first round match at the Shanghai Masters, but Aussie tennis brat Nick Kyrgios still couldn’t stay out of the news.

Following the nail-biting finish that saw the US team defeat the Internationals by just a point, players decided to throw a dress-up party.

He had a courtside cameraman ejected for repeatedly talking during points and was continually frustrated by the inexperience of the ball kids, at one point labelling the organisation “an absolute circus”.

Australia’s Adam Scott wore a kangaroo suit, Rickie Fowler went as Olympic champion snowboarder, Shaun White, Fred Couples just wore an akubra hat and Louis Oosthuizen added a fake moustache. Crazy guys!

He received a code violation for an audible obscenity and thanks to the Stan Wawrinka sledging furore, when he was fined $US25,000, Kyrgios is now flirting with suspension from the ATP Tour.

Fleer to rejoin AFL umpires panel

S

outh Australian field umpire Craig Fleer will join the AFL umpires’ panel in 2016 after impressing at the AFL draft combine in Melbourne last week.

Fleer, 30, was the only one of five State League field umpires selected to join the panel after an intense two-day trial period. Fellow South Aussie Leigh Haussen, 28, missed selection. Fleer was on the AFL panel in 2012, 2013 and 2014 but was delisted in 2015. He has umpired 36 games. Fleer said it was a relief to be selected again. “There was a lot packed in during the two days,’’ he said. “It was pretty challenging and a lot of the mental side worked on.’’ Part of the requirement for field umpires selected to the AFL panel is that they must live in Melbourne for that period of selection. But that isn’t a worry for Fleer. “That’s what you have to do so so I’ll be looking forward to getting over, probably full time early in the new year and going over for training in November until we get settled,’’ he said. “The AFL helps with some resettling costs and to find jobs for myself and wife (if needed). “It will be a bit different but that’s what you have to do and where you have to be.’’ Haussen said he knew what he had to work on and was looking at starting pre-season in the next week. “It was disappointing but I have been given stuff to start working on”, he said. “You just don’t know how many will be picked”. Recruiters look at suitable umpires during the season before selecting them for the camp. Among the tasks at the camp include a 3km run and 300m shuttles, what is your decision videos and a written laws of the game exam. Each umpire had to make a presentation to the group and sit in interviews with coaches, talent ID staff and the sports psychologist. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

In early 2016, people aspiring to coach and manage elite umpires will have the chance to undertake the inaugural AFL Executive Certificate (High Performance Umpire Coaching/ Management). The course has been developed by the AFL Umpiring Department in conjunction with AFL Sportready (Umpire AFL’s Coaching Education partner). The course will begin with a three-day intensive workshop in Melbourne next March. This workshop will include prominent keynote speakers, practical coaching scenarios and education in areas including Strategic Planning, Change Management, Presentation Skills and Cultural Awareness. People interested in becoming an umpire coach should contact their State Umpiring Development Manager. www.afl.com.au/umpires/state-contacts

Footy footnotes It was almost too quiet last weekend with no footy. It always takes a little getting used to at the end of the season, but at least there was still some trade news and much banter to be had with mates about who would go where, while Bathurst also swayed our interest. • Club best and fairests have been finalised as we saw Patrick Dangerfield take Adelaide’s honours but elsewhere it was a four-way tie between Dayne Beams, Stefan Martin, Mitch Robinson and Dayne Zorko at Brisbane, Patrick Cripps at Carlton, Scott Pendlebury at Collingwood, Cale Hooker at Essendon, surprisingly Aaron Sandilands at Fremantle, Mark Blicavs at Geelong, Tom Lynch at Gold Coast, Heath Shaw at GWS, Josh Gibson at Hawthorn, Bernie Vince at Melbourne and Todd Goldstein at North Melbourne, Alex Rance at Richmond, Jack Stevens at St Kilda, Josh Kennedy at Sydney, Easton Wood at Western Bulldogs and Andrew Gaff at West Coast (Port Adelaide’s count for the John Cahill medal is on 5 December) • A few of the AFL Draft Combine stars from last weekend included NT forward Daniel Rioli who showed a mix of endurance and speed, coming off a knee injury Matthew Kennedy, a likely GWS academy pick, was among the best performers in the beep test, jumping tests and over-head marking prominence, and Sudanese ruckman Gach Nyuon equalled West Coast star Nic Naitanui’s running vertical jumping benchmark while Western Bulldogs

father-son prospect Darcy MacPherson, small midfielder Kieran Lovell, burly Murray Bushranger Clayton Oliver and overager Alex Morgan were others to press their case well • Of the South Aussies at the combine, Wayne Milera shot up as a possible top-10 pick due to his class and pace, Ryan Burton showed he had returned to full fitness with good results after having 14 months off the scenes with a serious leg injury and Oleg Markov continues to put his name in front of recruiters • There have been a few interesting delistings from clubs as well such as previously banned Docker Ryan Crowley, as expected fellow banned Magpies Lachlan Keefe and Josh Thomas (but they may still get Rookie listed), Hawk Alex Woodward (after three knee reconstructions), Power big men Mitch Harvey and Jarrad Redden, Crows onballer Brodie Martin, Demon Mark Jamar, Adam Goodes’ brother Brett from the Bulldogs, father-son Bulldog Ayce Cordy and Kangaroos Scott McMahon to name just a few (with more to come no doubt) • Six Victorian AFL clubs - Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, St Kilda and Western Bulldogs – have joined together in signing a responsible gambling pledge that will see no gambling inducements given as awards or prizes and agree to promote responsible gambling and not make sponsorship deals with sports betting agencies - five of the clubs still make money from poker machines though, except for the Kangaroos

Dangerous to make comparisons Bomber Jake Carslile. Adelaide would welcome the opportunity to rise higher in the draft with pick five being suitable for talented local key defender Aaron Francis, Victorian country midfielder Darcy Parish or swingman West Australian Charlie Curnow who loom as top-five prospects. A few players could be used as bargaining chips as well, with Sam Kerridge keen to join Carlton on a three-year contract and Jarryd Lyons and Mitch Grigg on the table. Emerging midfielders Cam Ellis-Yolmen and Matt Crouch and defender Sam Shaw have re-signed with the club while key defender Danial Talia is in line for a long-term contract. A

delaide has achieved possibly the best it could have for losing its star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield to Geelong this week.

While getting two first round draft picks and a player would be the preferable option, gaining picks nine, 28 and promising South Australian Dean Gore is certainly an improvement on a compensation pick around 15 or 16 if he had simply left as a free agent. The club now has a pick inside the top-10 for the first time since selecting ex-Crow Phil Davis and Dangerfield at 10 in 2008 and 2007 respectively. It has not been too successful with first-round draft picks in the past, especially those within the top-10 which it has only had four in its history at the national draft including those above. John Meeson was called at eight in 2004 and Laurence Angwin at seven in 2000. Now with pick nine, it is imperative that recruiters get it right and select a long term player to the club. Another important matter from the Dangerfield deal is that fans do not get het up comparing promising young Dean Gore to the powerhouse he replaces.

GWS Giant Curtly Hampton should be a Crow by the end of the trade period while Blues Troy Menzel and Bulldog Michael Talia have been talked about.

The 19 year-old product from Sturt in the SANFL has been described as having similar attributes to Dangerfield as an inside-mid happy to get his hands dirty who also boasts pace, endurance and deft foot skills, but he will have enough pressure trying to make the Crows 22 next season.

Adelaide remains in the hunt for Hawthorn’s Jed Anderson despite the 21 year-old nominating West Coast as his destination club in 2016.

He certainly doesn’t warrant having the added burden of needing to be as good as Dangerfield as soon as he arrives.

Gold Coast is making it hard for Port Adelaide to finalise a trade for key forward Charlie Dixon with just pick 10 not acceptable for the Suns expressing their desire to get a player rather than another draft pick.

Gore may even reach the elite standards of his forbearer which must only be seen as a bonus. Giving him the number 32 won’t help either so it’s mothballs for the great ‘Roo’ guernsey. Adelaide is now well stocked with valuable draft picks, that could be enticing for other clubs to assist them complete trades and improve the Crows standings further in the next month’s national draft in Adelaide. St. Kilda has confirmed that it has “hypothetically” talked to Crows recruiters about an exchange of picks. An arrangement can be made to benefit both clubs whether the Saints receive picks that could be used in getting disgruntled

The Crows are also looking at another Category B Rookie listing in cricketer Alex Keath who was in the Suns’ original squad.

Melbourne remains defiant about keeping Jimmy Toumpas despite the Power offering its second-round draft pick or potentially one of its midfielders Aaron Young and Andrew Moore. It has also been declared there is nothing to the Angus Monfries to GWS rumours. The Power is not expected to be as active during the trade period as it cross-town rival but a few strategic inclusions could complete the premiership puzzle. Ollie Wines will be a crucial signature needed by Port Adelaide over the course of next year. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

general sport Confidence high in Redbacks C

onfidence continues to be high among the players of the South Australian cricket side, which has grown since its dramatic final-over win against Queensland last Sunday.

Facing reliable Bulls bowler James Hopes in the final over, Alex Ross produced a masterful display of batting, smashing a six and three consecutive fours to drag the Redbacks over the line with one ball to spare. Ross was the side’s last hope as the South Australians lost their ninth wicket on the second-last bowl of the 48th over (the game had been shortened by one over due to earlier rain). But he stayed calm and simply belted the Redbacks to their second victory. It ensured the side went into its next Matador Cup one-day match against Tasmania at

Blacktown Oval (which was played on Wednesday) still with the belief that the planned improvement this summer would continue. After a sterling first-up win over Western Australia last week, they were brought back to earth with a thud losing to a New South Wales line-up filled with national squad members. However, SA went into the Bulls game confident of success and began brilliantly with paceman Kane Richardson opening with two wickets from his first two balls on a green top at North Sydney Oval. Sights were quickly set to the Tigers following Sunday’s victory as the Redbacks look to rise back into trophy-winning contention.

“We always have good games against Tassie and they always seem to be tight, so if we can keep doing the things we want our batters will keep stepping up and hopefully our top order will follow,” Ross said. “And if our bowlers just keep bowling like they have they’ll set up winnable totals every game.” SA is currently third in the one-day series standings, two points behind Victoria and just ahead of Tasmania. A promising result on Wednesday could have lifted the Redbacks to second with the strong Blues outfit sitting on top with four wins. Ross said the team was focused on playing finals. “That’s always the goal when you’re coming into tournaments like this and the vibe of the group is really good at the moment, so that’s what we’re looking at,” he said. Tough test again for hungry 36ers

A

delaide 36ers faces an early-season test of character when it meets barnstorming Melbourne United at Hisense Arena (Melbourne) on Friday at 7pm. The 36ers are one win, one loss after splitting their opening home games with a win against New Zealand Breakers last Wednesday night and a 79-66 defeat to Perth Wildcats on the Saturday night, falling away in the dying minutes to concede a run of 16 points to nil. But a shoulder injury to key import Kenyon McNeail, suffered in the pre-season blitz program, could have serious ramifications for the team as it looks to keep pace with the competition’s best teams.

games. Last week the 36ers could not match Wildcat man mountain Nathan Jawai and struggled offensively to have much impact with Daniel Johnson (18 points) and Mitch Creek (13 points) the only players to make double figures. This Friday’s opponent, Melbourne United, won’t give the 36ers much respite. United, which missed the finals last season, already looks one of the toughest teams to beat this season. It has a 2–0 record with wins against Townsville away, 99–84, and a home victory against Illawarra on Sunday, 93–81. Perth and Sydney are the other unbeaten sides so far.

already for other teams. Former NBA player Hakim Warrick came off the bench with 21 points against Townsville and backed that up with 14 points in a slick 21 minutes against the Hawks. Another recruit, Todd Blanchfield, scored 29 points against his former club Townsville with seven of nine three-pointers following his 15 points against Illawarra. Chris Goulding, back to Melbourne this season, dominated for United against the Hawks with 26 points, adding to the depth of the new-look Melbourne team.

McNeail played 5:27 minutes against the Breakers and 8:40 against the Wildcats.

An area where the 36ers will need to be tight is in defence which saw Melbourne chalk up the two biggest team scores of the round.

There is little time to reflect for the 36ers, win or lose, with a home game against Cairns Taipans next Thursday at 7pm and an away game against Sydney at 7pm the following night (October 23).

Reds need to lift for Wanderers

I

t was only game one of a new A-League season and gaining greater confidence under new coach Guillermo Amor will take time, but there are key areas that Adelaide United needs to improve on to claim full points this week against Western Sydney Wanderers. Players looked stagnant for most the match against Melbourne Victory last Friday night at Adelaide Oval and struggled to get into the match with their previous flair of ball movement under Josep Gombau. Even when the Victory went down to 10 men, the Reds playmakers like Marco Carrusca, Isias and Jimmy Jeggo could not break the line to create scoring opportunites. They looked decidedly slow at times which can be improved by quicker ball movement but pace-wise, they definitely will miss Awer Mabil who joined Danish champions FC Midtjylland in the off-season. If not for stand-in goalkeeper John Hall’s efforts, Adelaide United could have been leaving the game without a point. Hall will fill in for injured skipper Eugene Galekovic who had surgury on his knee on Tuesday. He will miss at least six matches.

be a good draw, but if we go and lose then it’s a difficult start to the season.

“We can still improve a lot of things,” McGowan said.

“If we get four points against two very good sides, it’s a great start (to the season). But if we don’t then we’ll be putting a bit of extra pressure on ourselves heading over to Perth (in Round Three).

“Defensively we got caught out a couple of times and that’s something we must work on.

“We still have a lot to play for and so we will be looking to do everything we can to get the win on Friday night.” Hall in his first competitive start for Adelaide United, with skipper Galekovic on international duty with the Socceroos in Jordan, was a clear positive from the match. He was required to make a few difficult saves, but at the end of the match secured a maiden clean sheet on his starting debut. However, McGowan urged his fellow defenders to tighten up at the back and remain more resolute defensively to take the pressure off whoever the keeper is this week, as well as creatively going forward. Amor echoed this and will looking for a quick improvement to the way the side goes about it this week.

“Going forward I feel like we were a little bit lacklustre in the final third, but that will improve as the boys play more games and as the season goes on. “After the game, Guillermo said he was happy with our efforts, but he’s urging us to be more creative going forward and he will be looking to implement that this week. “I think everyone knows we’re quite a good attacking team and we’ve shown that in the last few seasons. “Now it’s more of a case for the boys to get properly match fit and used to the tempo the A-League is played at and once that happens we’ll (flourish).” Star defender Tarek Elrich returns from international duties to sure things up which should be a plus. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

In the end, the clash peppered to a 0-0 draw with stark improvement needed to be a real threat for the club’s first A-League title. The Wanderers will also be out for a better performance, after their round one loss at home, 1–3, to Brisbane Roar. Defender Dylan McGowan declared the side remained optimistic and knows it must improve both defensively and offensively. McGowan said the fact the Reds were able to secure a point against such strong opposition could be of major benefit providing Adelaide can get the three points against the Wanderers in Round Two at Coopers Stadium on Friday night. “Both teams had a lot of chances and it’s always difficult against Victory,” he said. “The main thing is that we kept trying to play and we’ll be better for that as the season goes on. “If we go and win (against the Wanderers) it’ll

100-Test milestones to boost Wallabies

T

he rare occasion of having two players becoming Test centurions in the same match will be dwarfed by the importance of securing safe passage to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals, the Wallabies insist.

ever, definitely, anywhere in the world, (and it was) just out of Sydney,” Hooper recalled. “You wouldn’t have believed it but it was my debut and it’s something I won’t forget.”

Australia has been historically dominant against quarter-final opponent Scotland, and enjoyed a 16-Test winning streak between 1984 and 2006.

Australia took the field after an absurdly short preparation, having had just one training session squeezed in between the end of the Super Rugby round and their Tuesday night clash with Scotland.

But many of the current group have bad memories of clashes with the Scots.

“It was a whirlwind,” Hooper said.

Captain Stephen Moore has only broken even with two wins and two losses against them over a 10-year international career, while vicecaptain Michael Hooper’s first thoughts on Scotland drift to his Test debut. Hooper started from the bench that night in Newcastle as Scotland five-eighth Greig Laidlaw kicked a late penalty to secure a 9-6 victory in some of the worst conditions imaginable for Test rugby - signalling an embarrassing low of the Robbie Deans’ era for the Wallabies. “(They were) the worst weather conditions

“I remember that night, absolutely devastating and probably shouldn’t have happened.” Australia will take added motivation into this weekend’s showdown at Twickenham, with both Moore and veteran centre Matt Giteau set to notch their 100th Tests. Hooper said it would be an honour to run out with the pair but insisted the importance of a World Cup quarter-final would overshadow personal milestones. “The main focus is winning the quarter-final and those guys will be the first to tell you that,” Hooper said.

Meares eyeing record fourth Olympics

S

he’s already arguably Australia’s greatest female cyclist and now Anna Meares is intent on cementing her status as the most enduring.

Meares’ gold medal-winning start to the season at the Oceania championships at the weekend very much confirmed the 32-yearold is on track to become the first Australian woman cyclist to contest four Olympic Games. Of her all incredible achievements, the 11-times world champion and dual Olympic gold medallist ranks her longevity alongside any of her countless triumphs. “No one’s done four before, so I’m hugely proud,” Meares said. “And I’m hugely proud of even attempting to do something like that. “I think sometimes that can be lost with people who don’t know or perhaps don’t appreciate that - not just the longevity but still delivering.”

A shooting star with her Olympic 500m time trial win in Athens in 2004, Meares made an extraordinary comeback from a broken neck to claim silver in the sprint in Beijing four years later before conquering her great British rival Victoria Pendleton to win the event in London in 2012. But she is showing no signs of slowing down, refusing to reveal how much longer she’ll carry on racing. “I’m not in my twilight years. I’m still well and truly young at heart,” Meares said. “Things are actually in a really good place for me now.” Three times world champions, Meares combined with Kaarle McCulloch to win the team sprint at the Oceania championships and she also collected a bronze in the Keirin. “I only raced two races, which is a reduced program from what I would normally ride, but

“But I’ve been part of (Adam Ashley-Cooper’s) 100 milestone and to get two guys doing it in the same week will be really exciting.” Despite a demanding tournament to date, which included escaping undefeated from the “pool of death”, Hooper was confident the Wallabies had not only tricks up their sleeve but also energy in reserve. That will be welcome news to coach Michael Cheika, who was disappointed with Australia’s attack in the victory over Wales, while understandably impressed with their defensive performance. Cheika put much of that down to the Welsh tactic of trying to kill the ball at the breakdown, denying Australia clean, quick ball in the process. “Like we’ve done the whole time, we’re trying to be slightly introverted in ourselves and play our game, see if we can make the opposition react and play accordingly to that,” Cheika said. BY JOE BARTON – AAP

I’m really pleased with it actually, just to dip the toe into the first competition of the season,” Meares said. Only 1992 Olympic road race champion Kathy Watt, also a silver medallist in the individual pursuit, could come close to challenging Meares as Australia’s greatest female cyclist. The veteran believes staying grounded is the key, being acutely aware that national selectors can only take two sprinters to Rio from a strong group also featuring McCulloch, Stephanie Morton and Caitlin Ward. “There’s nothing that says Anna Meares has a start at the Olympic Games,” Meares said. “There’s competition. Nothing’s guaranteed. If I want to go to Rio, I need to perform by putting my hand up. “I don’t have a pass, I don’t have an easy run. I need to earn my position.” BY DARREN WALTON – AAP

Rossi’s championship to lose

onourary Australian, if only for one day, Valentino Rossi returns to Phillip Island this weekend with the MotoGP championship all but stitched up.

The Italian crowd favourite leads the championship by 18 points from Movistar Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo. Rossi extended his advantage with a secondplacing behind Honda rider Dani Pedrosa who claimed his 50th victory in Japan last weekend. While Lorenzo jumped out to any early in the wet conditions at Motegi, Rossi and Pedroso hunted him down once the track dried out with the Spanaird showing greater speed in the finish. With 75 points still up for grabs, it remains anyone’s championship but Rossi is in the box seat to claim his 10th world title by simply finishing second in the last three races.

clinical season for Rossi who has re-found his consistency aboard the Yamaha, only once off the podium this season.

Australian debut rider Jack Miller will be hoping to pull off his best result of the season in front of his home crowds.

He remained steadfastly focused on his tried and tested “race by race” approach.

It has been a tough learning year for the 20 year-old who has made a great leap this year from finishing second in last year’s Moto3 class to the top level now.

The 36 year-old said he was reluctant to talk up his chances. “For me, it is quite impossible,” he said. “It’s very difficult from now until the end (that) we are always first and second because the two Hondas are very strong and in three races we will have completely different conditions and three very different types of track. “I never do these type of calculations because in 99 per-cent of times it don’t happen, so we need to concentrate on Phillip Island and try to arrive in front of Jorge. “This is the target, more than making the calculations of (who I need to be) arriving behind.”

Known as the ‘Doctor’, it has been another

V8s title still a long way off

B

athurst winner Craig Lowndes basked in his success in the great race and leaving any talk of title hopes alone.

Lowndes is still predicting Provdrive Racing’s Mark Winterbottom will be hard to catch over the last four events of the season with a lead of 399 points in the V8 championship. He declared the Fords would bounce back at the Gold Coast next weekend, after Winterbottom with co-driver Steve Owen finished second behind the Red Bull team last Sunday. The Holdens showed superior pace over the weekend but the tighter circuits to come will favour the Fords. Lowndes, though, was happy to be celebrating his sixth Bathurst 1000 victory, equaling Larry Perkins and Mark Skaife for the number of wins at the mountain. The popular win, which was co-driver Steven Richards’ fourth success, was also the 30th time a Holden had crossed the finish line in line at

Mount Panorama but the first time the podium was filled with qualifiers outside the top-10. The barriers certainly received a hammering over the weekend with the usual dramas taking place, including several big crashes, one putting reigning Bathurst champion Chaz Mostert in hospital and out of contention. Although the win moved Lowndes into second place ahead of Mostert in the title fight, he was somewhat dubious that he could close the gap. “This (win) is more a function of a unique race track,” Lowndes told v8supercars.com.au. “We knew we were going to be in better shape in terms of a speed comparison with the Falcon coming here. “But we will see what happens when we go to the Gold Coast, because that is more of a stop and squirt sort of a track. “We still think the Falcons have got better drive off corners the way that they drive them.

Riding a Honda, Miller failed to finish the Japan MotoGP last week which he was disappointed about. However, qualifying 22nd, the wet conditions did not suit the set-up of the bike. He showed he was quicker in the dry with an 11th fastest time in Sunday’s warm-up session. A top 10 placing will be his goal at home this weekend, hopefully even higher to really maintain a top 20 championship finish in his first year among the big boys. He is third in the standings for the Rookie of the Year classification though.

“So maybe the Gold Coast might turn it around.” Even if the Falcons don’t bounce back on the Gold Coast, Lowndes conceded wiping out Winterbottom’s championship lead would be a tall order. “Gold Coast we have had hits and misses so we need to make sure we close the enduro season out on a high. “Then we have the run home, so for us the championship is still a possibility, but it’s a long shot.” Winterbottom and Owen have also firmed as favourites for the third V8 Supercars PIRTEK Enduro Cup. The Sandown 500 winners hold a 78 point advantage in the Enduro Cup over Holden Racing Team duo, Garth Tander and Warren Luff, finished third at Bathurst. Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathon Webb are third, 60 points behind the Tander/Luff combination Lowndes and Richards are fourth heading to the Gold Coast. What was Jamie Whincup’s brain fade all about?

Spring Racing news STABLE WATCH DAVID HAYES & TOM DABERNIG

Lindsay Park reliving glory days adapt to Australian conditions. Another of the stable’s top prospects showed bigger things well ahead last Saturday. She has a famous mother but the daughter of Miss Finland, Stay With Me, is famous for winning the Group One Thousand Guineas. Like her mum, Stay With Me has a prosperous broodmare career set out by owners Arrowfield Stud and an Oaks victory to match mum would make her increasingly valuable. She looks set to be joined by Sacred Eye and Dawn Of Hope too on the path to the Oaks while Alkaashef and Extra Choice are looking towards the Derby. Sovereign Nation also ran well in the Group One Caulfield Guineas for the colts and geldings and he could step up for more success during the carnival, having already won the Group Two Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley at his previous start.

F

ormer South Australian trainer David Hayes is on the verge of returning to the heights of his first season taking over from father Colin in 1990-91 when he achieved a world record six Group winners in a day on Derby Day, just a week after cherishing the success of Better Loosen Up in the Cox Plate, who won the Japan Cup a few weeks later. Hayes, now training in partnership with nephew Tom Dabernig, has another worthy internationally-performed star in his stable ready to give the Cox Plate a real shake. Criterion left quarantine only a week before showing his credentials with a cracking Caulfield Stakes victory against several rival Plate contenders. It jumped the five year-old to the top of betting markets for the weight-for-age classic at Moonee Valley Saturday week. Criterion’s form in Australia is second to none, having defeated Red Cadeaux in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick in April. He then finished third in Hong Kong in the

Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Sha Tin also April before heading to the United Kingdom where he had two runs in England for a fifth placing in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and a sixth in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York on 19 August. Last Saturday was his first race since, showing his fitness was still at an elite level. He may even proceed to the Melbourne Cup if he continues to do well. The training partnership looks to have a strong hand in the major Cups races as well. Former New Zealander Rising Romance has landed in the pair’s lap in an effort to go one better in this year’s Caulfield Cup. Previously with Donna Logan who almost pulled off a Caulfield Cup victory with the then four year-old before being grabbed on the line by the Japanese stayer Admire Rakti, Rising Romance is a top chance again following some fine runs in lead-up races. Hayes and Dabernig have a few internationals including Pacific Heights and Epsom Hill who are slowly coming to hand as they

Others performing well include Churchill Dancer, Afleet Esprit, Wawail, youngster Keen Array, Kayjay’s Joy and Firehouse Rock who could go on to more riches. Top class Hong Kong sprinter Sterling City is pleasing Hayes as he prepares for his first Australian campaign this spring. Sterling City has won the Group Two Premier Bowl, the Group Three Premier Cup and Group Three Chinese Challenge Cup at Sha Tin but his career highlight came with a powerful victory in the 2014 Group One Golden Shaheen on the Tapeta in Dubai. Hayes is hoping he might measure up against class sprinters Chautauqua and Exosphere. He is also looking forward to seeing fellow former Hong Kong galloper Dibayani rise to be a Cups hope and while gaining a start in the Caulfield Cup may be beyond him this week, a good showing in the David Jones Cup could see him persist with a Melbourne Cup tilt. Whether the Hayes and Dabernig team has the ability to match those accomplishments of Derby Day 1990 is another matter. But 25 years on, the big races at least are well within their grasp which could again see Lindsay Park’s name back up in lights, this time centred at Euroa. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

he international horses completed their major pieces of trackwork last Sunday for the $3million Caulfield Cup (2400m) with joint top-weight Snow Sky impressing on-lookers the most. Race rider Damien Oliver, chasing a recordequalling fifth Caulfield Cup, worked Snow Sky and was pleased with the progress the Hardwicke Stakes winner had made since arriving in Australia.

on another Japanese horse Admire Rakti.

against the better and older horses,” he said.

However, he is a little concerned the 2400m would be too short for his 2015 mount which gave him the impression the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup would suit the stayer more.

“I’m really pleased with the way he is stepping up. I’m confident going into Saturday anyway.”

“The horse I rode last year was a little bit sharper and able to help me a little bit more whereas this guy is a genuine stayer that just likes to go through his gears,” Purton said.

“His fitness is great and his recovery was quick after the gallop and it’s all systems go going into next week,” he said.

“There’s no doubt he’s got the ability to win the Caulfield Cup. If the race is run to suit, he’s going to get his chance.”

“I think he’s the right sort of horse to bring out here, particularly for Caulfield which can be a bit of a tricky track for the Europeans.

New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson is thrilled with the way Cup favourite Mongolian Khan has come through his races this preparation and believes he is ready to peak at the right time.

“His form shows that he’s a really good mile-and-a-half horse in Europe, but that equates to being a good two mile horse here.

Top international jockey Zac Purton believes his mount the Japanese runner Fame Game might not “get warm” in Saturday’s Cup.

Mongolian Khan, trained by Murray Baker, flashed home for third behind Criterion in last week’s Group One Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and Bosson agrees he is now looking for the 2400m, a distance he has won both his starts at including the AJC Derby at Royal Randwick in April.

Purton is pursuing his second consecutive Caulfield Cup after winning last year’s race

“He’s racing a lot more professional (this time in) and hitting the line a lot harder

“I think either race will suit him as well as the other.”

Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller was upbeat after his three Caulfield Cup runners rounded out their work for Saturday. Royal Descent appears to be Waller’s best hope and he said she was definitely stronger than her last attempt at the Caulfield Cup in 2013 when she ran home well for fifth. “As a four year-old mare she’d have been best described as a four-year-old filly. Physically she was only a shadow of what she is now,” he said. “On that basis we probably should be a bit more upbeat about her chances this week because she started pretty close to favourite in 2013 when she loomed up, wasn’t strong enough and felt the track a bit.” Who Shot Thebarman and Grand Marshal are both regarded as better punting prospects for the Melbourne Cup but Waller believes both horses will perform strongly provided luck’s on their side. aulfield Guineas runner-up Lizard Island is set to back-up in the Group One Caulfield Classic (2000m) on Saturday.

Hyland said that Lizard Island had thrived since the Caulfield Guineas, in which he beat home all bar Press Statement, but he needs another run to be spot on for the Victoria Derby (2500m) in two weeks. “When I had a discussion with (the owners) about it we decided that probably we’d be better running here and give him two weeks to the Derby instead of going to the Derby the following week and having a week to the Derby,” Hyland said. Trainer Mike Moroney will make an important gear change with Tivaci, fitting a one-eyed blinker for the Classic.

“He has very good ability but just won’t quite go straight,” Moroney said. “We did think about the blinker for his last start but left him alone and he possibly cost Damien (Oliver) his holiday when he ducked in quite quickly as they turned for home. “He has worked in them and I feel it is time to use them in a race.” Others looking to show Derby potential include Godolphin pair Shards and Etymology, Stuart Webb;s Get The Picture and Shawn Mathrick’s Ayers Rock while David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s Sacred Eye is the only filly in the race and eyeing the Oaks. Peter Moody has opted for the Group Two

Caulfield Sprint (1000m) with boom three year-old Kinglike, before his major spring goal, the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on 31 October. Joe Pride intends to run his last start Group One Moir Stakes placegetter Ball Of Muscle in the weight-for-age event, bypassing next Friday’s Group One Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley before the sprinter heads to Western Australia for a shot at the $750,000 Group I Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in November. Horse Racing news INTERNATIONAL Watch

Adelaide’s remarkable win in 2014, coming eight wide on the turn at the tight Moonee Valley circuit, has encouraged more raiders to chase weight-for-age success against the locals. O’Brien is back with Highland Reel who he set for the Plate after a brilliant 5.25 lengths victory in the Secretariat Stakes over 2000m in the United States, emulating Adelaide’s feats last year. He then returned home for one more start in Irish Champion Stakes, fading from on the pace, behind the best middle-distance runner in Europe this year Golden Horn.

performers of 2015 in Arod. Arod, trained by Peter ChappleHyam, has won twice over 2000m but his best form has been around the mile, taking out the Group Three Diomed Stakes over 1700m at Epsom in June and the Group Two Summer Mile at Ascot in July leading all of the way in both. He then produced a career peak performance, finishing runnerup to Solow in the Group One Sussex Stakes over 1600m at Glorious Goodwood in July. Arod, who relishes firm ground, did run on well in the Derby as a three year-old so there are no concerns with stamina and ability to compete against more fancied weight-for-age stayers. Leading Aussie jockey Craig Williams will be his rider having had a strong association with owner of Qatar Racing Sheikh Fahad al Thani.

That is the best form in Europe and with a racing style which may be suited to Moonee Valley, Highland Reel could be more than competitive in a Cox Plate.

Gailo Chop will be raced by Simon O’Donnell’s connections OTI Racing after buying a 50 percent stake in the five year-old early 2014 but racing in Europe.

Last year’s winning jockey Ryan Moore is also expected to be back for another tilt aboard the Coolmore contender.

Gailo Chop, with Brad Rawiller to ride, has tactical speed and races best on the pace, even leading and is effective on all going but has an edge on tracks with a bit give in the ground.

He will also be joined by one of the most consistent European

IT’s a joke A RACEHORSE OWNER TAKES HIS HORSE to the vet. “Will I be able to race this horse again?” he asks. “Of course you will, and you’ll probably win!” the vet said. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PHOTO FINISH, but by the time my horse finished, it was too dark to take a picture. “I PUT $50 ON A HORSE LAST SATURDAY,” Bill said. “What happened?” Joe asked. “It blew off!” Bill replied.
