It is undeniable that Clarkson has had an impressive list of players to guide in his time at the club, which is as much a credit to his own work in bring that squad together. The rebuilding may have taken its time but over that process, he definitively had his recruiters pick finely skilled players, strategically many left-footed, who he was able to turn into a flexible, well drilled team with a real desire to play to his structure and win. Ultimate glory was finally awarded four years into Clarkson’s reign and so the journey to greatness began. However, it would take another five years for his current achievements to be realised. Success has come about by his ability to re-invent his side for the time while proving to be ahead of the pack in innovativeness. He continually evolved to the playing group he had and the opposition he faced. It started with Clarko’s cluster and since then he has developed a side that has been able to outwit the rest of the competition. Many said we would not see the

accomplishments again of the Brisbane Lions in recording their three-peat back in 2001, 2002 and 2003, especially not in an 18-team competition (there was only 16 teams in Brisbane’s day). Matthews was about strength and toughness though. Clarkson did it with finesse and skill, with just enough niggle that he could get away with. He has certainly put himself amongst the ranks of other great coaching legends. The Lions’ success saw its widely acclaimed mentor Leigh Matthews become a four-time premiership.

With his first coming at Collingwood after the Magpies long drought of 32 years, does being a premiership-winning coach at multiple club make him the greatest coach though? Outside that time, Jock McHale won eight premierships at Collingwood though the depression years. Tom Hafey won four flags for Richmond in the late ‘60s and early 70s, and also took the Magpies to four grand final losses and a draw. Kevin Sheedy has also won four at Essendon while others of note include fellow Hawks mentor Alan Jeans who won three premierships in his time, David Parkin won four over a 17-year period coaching Hawthorn and

Carlton, and Mick Malthouse has three to his name at West Coast (two) and Collingwood.

But these were vastly different eras. Now Hawthorn is suggesting four in a row is possible, which the Lions could not manage losing to Port Adelaide in the 2004 decider but at least they made four grand finals in succession.

Will the Hawks have the drive to become the ‘Superteam’ in an age of ‘equalisation’? Just keeping the list together will be the hardest thing. With expectations as well that the upcoming trade period will be the most hectic in history, Clarkson cannot afford to let his competitors surpass him so some tough decisions will have to be made too. The present group may have had their time and for success to reign longer for the Hawks changes will need to be made, particularly for the hunger to prosper. Clarkson’s assistants are now being poached as well, as other clubs look to utilise their knowledge. This again is a testament to the coaching prowess, leadership and mentorship abilities of Clarkson. Overall though, it has been a perfect storm of great intuitive coaching and a great list that has yearned to achieve success. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

As heartbreaking as it was, even the Broncos fans weren’t despondent to see one of the game’s greats celebrate the ultimate team success and he’s at least a Queenslander as well.

Wow, the English Premier League is a ruthless business.

Johnathan Thurstan’s individual honours have made him elite, but what he achieved to win North Queensland its first ever NRL premiership made him ‘immortal’. In the most thrilling grand final ever, nothing it seemed was going to stop the Cowboys captain from holding the Provan-Summons Trophy aloft.

Only eight games into the season and already managers are getting the sack. Liverpool hasn’t accepted mediocrity with Brendan Rodgers becoming the first victim over the weekend, but he was closely followed by Sunderland’s Dick Advocaat also receiving his marching orders. The question now is how long can Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho last with the reigning champion Blues languishing lower than Rodgers’ Reds (10th) at the foot of the table in 16th place?

Crows and Pyke right fit T

he longer it goes on the more likely it is that Adelaide will be announcing Don Pyke as it new senior coach.

Pyke has continually iterated that he wished to get all of his West Coast duties out of the way before declaring any move to West Lakes. With the Eagles’ best and fairest count on Friday, it would appear he is staying true to his word while the coaching selection panel finalise all the interviewing process with him as well. The club may have sprung a surprise last year with the announcement of Phil Walsh, who wasn’t even on the media radar, as coach. It is unlikely to shock many with its latest appointment. Pyke has been the Crows man from the outset, with the club seeking him out as earlier as late July/early August. Back then he expressed that he would be interested in talking to the club, but needed to complete the season in his assistant’s role at West Coast before proceeding any further. With the Eagles making the grand final last week, it has meant the club has had to wait until this week to speak to him in more detail about where he saw its make-up and how he could propel the playing list to its next premiership.

It is unlike any other coaching vacancy in the league as well with no need to start a rebuilding program as is normally the case when new coaches come aboard.Instead it is a continuation of what the club already has in place. That is not to say that Pyke won’t have his own influence on the direction taken. But there will be no major shake-up needed of the squad, although there may be a few more changes than past years with a hectic trade period predicted for all clubs, or a number of seasons developing a young playing list. Only a few tweaks would be required to take Adelaide to the next level of being a premiership threat. Pyke also knows the environment, having been at the club under Neil Craig in 2005 and 2006,

so his transition would be easier than for most. He has been receiving glowing praise as well from several of his past senior coaches, including interim coaching director and ex-teammate John Worsfold, his playing day coach Mick Malthouse at West Coast and former Fremantle coach Chris Connolly who he advised in a consultancy role at the Dockers, to suggest he is ready to take over the reins of a side in his own right and be a success as it too. Pyke’s tactical nous has also put him in the number one spot for Adelaide’s next coach, much in the same vein as Phil Walsh who he worked closely with at the Eagles last year. It is understood the pair’s thoughts on the game are similar. The way they went about things are on the same page which is another

Footy footnotes Billed as a classic, the AFL grand final was rather anti-climactic in the end, especially compared to its NRL counterpart which was as thrilling as they come. What we learnt though: • Night grand finals provide the better environment for pre-game entertainment • While we were all trying find chinks in the Hawks armour, despite spruiking them as hot favourites for most of the year, they did instill themselves as one of the great sides of the modern era • Cyril was “special” as Sam Mitchell just misses another medal • North-eastern football clubs Modbury and Tea Tree Gully would have been celebrating the achievements of former junior heroes Paul Puopolo and Ryan Schoenmakers respectively • Key Eagles go missing on the big day, which they will be no doubt disappointed about, including Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling (although they didn’t see much of the ball down their end) • It definitely showed how disadvantaged the interstate sides are by not getting

big plus to his resume and will ensure not too much changes for the players after such a traumatic season. While trading negotiations will be well under way before officially coming on board, the club will be able to make his appointment public by Monday, allowing him to get straight into the wheelings and dealings of trade week. He would certainly want to have his input into what players he would like remaining at the club and who he would like to add and in what areas. Pyke is the right fit for the Adelaide Football Club at this time and the club is the right fit for him to initiate his senior coaching. Hopefully success prevails. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN enough exposure to the ‘G’ during the season while it was Hawthorn’s home ground • Older Hawks Brian Lake and David Hale go out on a high, announcing their retirements after winning their third premiership – Lake would have liked to have gone on one more year but the club convinced him it was time to retire. Not a bad career • Aussie rock legend Daryl Braithwaite was a surprise addition to club celebrations on Saturday night as the players banged out their unofficial song ‘Horses’ • Wouldn’t want to be neighbours of Jarryd Roughead come grand final time – with morning celebrations adjourning to his house on the Sunday • It was the same club tune played victoriously at both the AFL and SANFL grand finals this season • Good news for the Power as midfielder Hamish Hartlett re-signs until the end of 2021, squashing any trade rumours that he was on the way out • Publicity on the umpires’ Mad Monday dress-ups in Victorian papers. Really? – I surpose they have to let off steam at season’s end too?

Build it and it will come

Being able to play them all, especially with the loss of the substitute and fewer interchange rotations next year, seems unlikely.

delaide and Port Adelaide are still a right mix away from truly contesting for a premiership, but it won’t take much to reach that position.

Collingwood onballer and 2015 Anzac Day medallist Paul Seedsman but there will be others in the background.

The Power has also expressed preliminary interest in out-of-contract Melbourne midfielder Jimmy Toumpas.

Losing Dangerfield means a ‘big fish’ is needed to keep the Crows in the top eight next season so a Luke Parker from Sydney would fit the bill.

Injuries this season to Jared Polec and Matthew White exposed the Power’s lack of pace which was their greatest asset in 2014 so more players that could break the lines and run away from opponents will be on list manager Jason Cripps’ and GM of Football Chris Davies shopping list over the next week.

A

Therefore, one can assume that both our AFL clubs will be actively seeking the answers to finalise the puzzle and challenge for a title again in 2016. While the Power went backwards this season, the Crows made a few inroads on moving up the ladder, playing finals football, so both sides will be expecting to play finals next year. Adelaide’s task will obviously be made harder by the departure of star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield and will need several replacements to account for his loss. List Manager, Justin Reid and Head of Football, David Noble will have plenty of cash to splash around with Dangerfield off the books but using it wisely will be the key to the Crows enticing the right the of players to West Lakes. They should have few cards to play, once matching Geelong’s offer for restricted free agent Dangerfield earns them better draft picks to present around to other possible suitors. Pace around the ground seems a muchneeded quality. Several names have been bandied about but only quick Giants defender Curtly Hampton has so far expressed a desire to move to Adelaide. The club has admitted it is talking to fringe

Getting ex-pat South Australians has proven challenging for the club in the past, but with premiership prospects higher it will look to see one or two return home during this trade period. Although the forward playing stocks look to be in good hands at the moment, dangerous small forward Troy Menzel from Carlton has been linked to Adelaide as has Cat speedster Jordan Murdoch in any Dangerfield deal. A good pickup for the club would be young quick Hawthorn defender Jed Anderson.

At the same time, key defender Alipate Carlile is closer to 30 than 25 so there will be a need for a strong counterpart to come into the lineup when he departs or suffers further injury.

One more bigger bodied defender looks vital for the Crows to make another step up and that could be Daniel Talia’s brother Michael as a delisted free agent which won’t cost them anything either. A few on the way out could be Cameron Ellis Yolmen, Sam Kerridge and Jarryd Lyons.

Trade week which begins next Monday is hotly anticipated to be a hive of activity, particularly compared to previous years, with suggestions player movement will be at its highest ever before it closes at 5pm on Sunday 18 October.

Gold Coast forward Charlie Dixon has declared his new club of choice as Port Adelaide which will give it more firepower next season. However, fitting him around Jay Schulz, Justin Westhoff, Paddy Ryder and Matthew Lobbe looks to be a testing proportion for coach Ken Hinkley.

TRADING RUMOUR MILL • There’s talk that Melbourne is throwing big money at classy Sydney onballer Luke Parker • Bomber Jake Carlisle is being strongly wooed by St Kilda but the travel distance between his Ascot Vale home and Seaford is a concern so Carlton remained a possibility while teammate Jake Melksham wants to be a Demon • New Essendon coach John Worsfold willing to talk to Harley Bennell but the out-of-favour Sun has just announced Fremantle as his club of choice • South Australian James Aish is likely to stay in Brisbane now along with big man Stefan Martin but fellow Croweater Jack Redden wants to cross the country to join the Eagles in Perth • Fellow Lion Matthew Leuenberger has attracted interest from Essendon and the Sydney Swans • Brisbane has confirmed its interest in Geelong’s Stevie Johnson while it is also after Blue Tom Bell and hasn’t ruled out pursuing Hawks premiership defender Matt Suckling • Greater Western Sydney will target an experienced ruckman to offer support for Shane Mumford and the Giants’ developing talls with Western Bulldog Will Minson, Geelong free agent Dawson Simpson

Aaron Young and Andrew Moore may ask for a trade back to Victoria as they look for more opportunities elsewhere.

Restricted free agency offers and unrestricted free agency period starts on Friday so Adelaide will be diligently busy over the weekend to bring in the best deal for Dangerfield’s move to Geelong. As Clarko has done at Hawthorn a big part of the premiership road is to build a flexible and strong list. Build that and it will come. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

and the Sydney Swans’ number two ruckman Tom Derickx under consideration • A ruckman on the way out of the Giants is Zac Smith with Geelong or Essendon to be a destination of his choice • The Bulldogs are keen on luring another big man to the kennel as well • Scott Lycett could be a bargaining chip for West Coast with its big man numbers doing well • Kangaroos forward Aaron Black is exploring his options • The Suns and Fremantle are understood to be the two clubs most interested in high-flier Jeremy Howe • Carlton is standing strong on its requirement of first-round draft picks in exchange for Chris Yarran and Lachie Henderson but it is keen for Geelong forward Josh Walker’s services which could come in a deal to send Henderson to the Cats • Blues list manager Stephen Silvagni is trying to entice Liam Sumner, Jed Lamb, Lachie Plowman and Andrew Phillips to Ikon Park from his old club GWS as well – Lamb also has Essendon in the mix • Melbourne has shown interest in GWS’s Tom Bugg and Magpie Ben Kennedy • Out-of-contract premiership player Ryan Schoenmakers has been linked to Sydney but is expected to still be a Hawk next year while Craig Bird could be open to move away from the Swans

2015 SANFL CLUB REVIEWS More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

NORTH ADELAIDE

What went right: Frankly, very little. 2015 was one of the most disastrous years at Prospect, although some younger players stepped up to take their opportunities. Marlon Motlop continued to silence his doubters with a career-best season. What went wrong: Injuries took a major toll early and the Roosters almost never fielded their best line-up. The departure of coach Ken McGregor raised some questions about whether the club fully understood the impact of his full-time employment versus coaching. A number of senior players languished in the reserves when their leadership was desperately needed on-field. Key needs: Mobile height in attack, ball-winning pace around the middle and a change in attitude from a couple of players who have not seized their opportunities. Prognosis for 2016: The appointment of Josh Carr as coach should turn the culture back to a more ruthless one and if the playing group takes the opportunity to impress early, then the mood around should lift. Can only improve.

SOUTH ADELAIDE

What went right: Started strongly and looked set for another finals campaign for most of the season. Withstood the loss of some key players with others stepping up to grab their chances. Joel Cross continues to build a reputation as one of the best to pull on the Panther jumper. What went wrong: Faded as the season drew on and should view missing finals as a major disappointment. Seems one dimensional in attack too often. Barely saw a couple of their recruits due to injury. Key needs: A genuine second ruck option who can push forward to support Daniel Bass. A taller defender on the last line to reduce the load on Brad Crabb. A pacy half forward who can rotate on the ball. Prognosis for 2016: At a slight crossroads. Reappointing Brad Gotch in the coaches box is a key move, but need to be wary about falling right back into the pack as the opposition showed signs of working out the game plan this season. Needs to carefully target some major holes if it is to improve its position.

STURT

What went right: A mixed season at Unley but the return of James Battersby was a sound support for Zane Kirkwood, who remains one of the league’s premier onballers. Was fairly settled most of the season with few long term injuries. Moved the ball impressively at times for some good results. What went wrong: Seemed unsettled in attack for much of the season. Can rely very heavily on some of the same few names for too long in games. Its closing few weeks could only be considered disappointing.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

Key needs: The coaching appointment will be crucial, with someone who is there for the long haul and prepared to make some tough calls on the list. A mobile centre half forward, a goal-kicking wingman and two smaller rebounding defenders would top things off. Prognosis for 2016: Another team in a position where it needs to recruit carefully and look at its list with the same care to make some calls that may be needed if it is to return to finals action. Mid to lower table result, on paper.

WEST ADELAIDE

What went right: A sensational season at Milner Road, culminating in breaking the second longest current drought in SANFL premierships. Coach Mark Mickan was finally vindicated for a game plan that thrived with a more injury-free Bloods unit. Played one of the more entertaining, attacking brands of football seen for some time and reaped deserved rewards What went wrong: Had a couple of glitches, notably against the AFL Reserves teams, that halted its flow a little. Otherwise, few things went wrong in an otherwise brilliant 2015. Key needs: A taller forward to complement the excellent small contingent, as opposition teams will study the structure carefully to find holes that can be exploited. A pacy back pocket to provide quick rebound to complement the talls would also mix things up. Prognosis for 2016: A great opportunity to build a real dynasty, particularly with a number of younger players that may not be drafted but can become 150-game SANFL players. Holding onto the list will be the challenge, but all is in place for West to take the next step.

EAGLES

What went right: Most of 2015, due to its dominance over most of the league. A number of players had career-best seasons and coach Michael Godden reinvented a game plan that had become stale to an entertaining style that reaped the rewards. Booted some big scores and contained the opposition superbly at times. What went wrong: The second semi-final. While the Eagles defeated West, it resulted in season-ending injuries to Angus Rowntree, Angus Poole and Marc Borholm, which they never recovered from in time for the grand final. Some lower level players in the squad didn’t seize their chances when available. Key needs: At least one crumbing forward to work at the feet of the talls in the 50, as the side seemed a bit top heavy at times. An outside ball carrier through the middle and a smaller back pocket to mix things up in defence. Prognosis for 2016: Would be wary of reading too much into the grand final loss, which was made so much harder with key losses heading inwards. Some careful recruiting moves should keep it around the top three.

New found belief for Redbacks S outh Australian cricket captain Travis Head believes the Redbacks’ impressive victory in their opening one-day match of the new series will give his side greater belief moving ahead.

managed to blow it out of the water.

History was against SA, achieving just one win in both of the past two domestic oneday series and finishing bottom for the fifth time in six years of Sheffield Shield cricket.

It’s a win Head, 21, said would now provide momentum and confidence that would make SA hard to beat as it looked to repeat its triumphant campaign of 2011–12.

So there was plenty of skepticism about South Australia’s chances again leading into another summer of cricket.

“It’s great to get off to the start that we have,” he said.

At the same time, the Redbacks squad, boasting only two players with international experience, was facing more powerful state rivals who had the luxury of fielding their Test stars due to the cancellation of the Bangladesh tour. Even when faced with the daunting task of chasing Western Australia’s 350 runs in their first one-day match, Head said the side was still willing to believe that the total could be reeled in on the small Hurstville Oval in Sydney. It required the second-greatest comeback in Australian one-day domestic cricket but SA

The young Redbacks skipper stayed calm throughout, even recording the quickest double century in A-grade cricket to lead his side to an incredible win.

“It gives us great belief that we can chase anything. We’ve worked really hard in the pre-season. “It gets us off to a great start and gives us the confidence that what we’ve been doing pre-season has worked a little bit. “In this tournament situation, if we can get momentum now and take it into Thursday (against NSW), we can do anything.” The introduction of Stephen Schwerdt as the team’s strength and conditioning coach has the players at the best fitness levels they have ever been. Head said Schwerdt, a former fitness advisor

he venue name may have changed again but the support of the Adelaide 36ers fans this season should be a constant.

Now known as Titanium Security Arena, replacing the Adelaide Arena name of the past five years, fans should also be looking forward to a couple of changes on court. The club has recruited Kenyon McNeail, a 24 year-old from Louisiana Tech. McNeail comes to the 36ers as a guard after not being drafted at the 2014 NBA draft. The other import signing is 34 year-old Ebi

Ere who will thrill the crowd as a guard or forward.

Ere reunites with coach Joey Wright after the pair played big parts in Brisbane winning an NBL flag in the 2006–07 season. Ere, who first arrived in the country in 2003 as an import with the Sydney Kings, won two NBL titles in three grand final programs in the space of four seasons in Australia. Ere’s recent stint in Australia was the 2008–09 season with Melbourne Tigers, making the All NBL first team with a season average of 20.7 points per game. Since then has played

at both the Adelaide Crows and Gold Coast Suns, has taken SA’s fitness program to a new professional level that in turn has instilled a greater sense of belief in the playing group.

The addition of new coach Jamie Siddons, who captained the Redbacks in their most recent Shield success 20 years ago, has provided a fresh approach following seasons of disappointment. SA’s real improvement must be shown when meeting NSW at North Sydney Oval on Thursday. The Blues could feature 10 international players, including Shane Watson and Doug Bollinger, and are coming off a 279 run thumping of the Cricket Australia XI. However, Head said that NSW was simply another obstacle for the unfancied Redbacks to overcome. “It’s a great challenge for us,” he said. “To win this tournament, we’re going to have to beat the best sides. It’d be great to get the momentum of two wins on the board.”

in leagues in France, Italy and Spain. While the new-look team should prove exciting to watch albeit a little unkown as how it will fare in the season, it has several familiar faces, including star captain Adam Gibson who is always a big-game player. This year’s roster is Ere (guard, forward), McNeail (guard), Gibson (guard), Daniel Johnson (centre/forward), Lucas Walker (forward), Anthony Petrie (forward), Mitch Creek (guard), Brendan Teys (guard), Nathan Sobey (guard) and Matt Hodgson (centre). Eight teams will battle for the championship this season. They are the 36ers, Cairns Taipans, Illawara Hawks, Melbourne United, New Zealand Breakers, Perth Wildcats, Sydney Kings and Townville Crocodiles. The 36ers opened their season against the Breakers on Wednesday night but will be at home against the Wildcats on Saturday night.

Reds desperate to open with a victory P laymaker Marcelo Carrusca believes Adelaide United has what it takes to overcome Melbourne Victory in round one of the new A-League season at Adelaide Oval on Friday night. He also said that little should be read into the Reds’ FFA Cup 3–1 loss to their arch rival.

Carrusca, who has be finding his touch again after a troublesome finish to last season with injury, declared the side had a strong desire to start the 11th A-League season with a win. He was looking forward to showing off the tactical freedom given to the players by new coach Guillermo Amor, which he believes will make the Reds ultra-competitive this season. “We have not changed our playing style but Guillermo has introduced a different concept and a new mentality to our game,” Carrusca said.

“With Josep we had many rules we had to follow on the pitch but with Guillermo we are free to use our instincts. “I personally love the greater freedom Guillermo has given us and I’m sure my teammates feel the same way.

“We had a great pre-season. It was a long pre-season, but now, finally, we’re starting the new season. “We are ready and have prepared for this game very well. It’s very important (to win our first game) and start the league by winning the first game at home with our fans.” The Argentine admitted that a large parochial home crowd would be pivotal in ensuring Adelaide United had every advantage possible. “We got there two hours before the game and the stadium was just about full,” he said.

Now playing with renewed confidence under Ange Postecoglou, McKay feels the Socceroos can kick on.

“It was a really hostile crowd, really intimidating place, they were jeering after us when we came out and they didn’t stop supporting their team the whole game.”

“We go there knowing it’s going to be a tough fixture, they’re a good team and they’ll challenge us,” he said.

McKay said the team didn’t see the result or performance coming after a 3–0 win over Lebanon in Mark Schwarzer’s 100th international match days earlier. In Amman, the Socceroos were dealt a blow when centre-back Sasha Ognenovski went down with a hamstring injury after 15 minutes, with Mark Bresciano

“But being Asian Champions, we’ve got that belief now we can go through the qualification phase, very positively in the way we play. “We’re going to play our own way and if we can execute, I’m sure we’ll get the three points and move on to the next phase.” BY BEN MCKAY – AAP

Wallaby Hooper banned from Wales clash

W

allabies vice-captain Michael Hooper will miss Saturday’s World Cup clash with Wales after copping a one-week ban for foul play stemming from last weekend’s stunning victory over England. Hooper pleaded guilty to the offence at a twohour judiciary hearing in London on Tuesday, ruling him out of Australia’s final group match – which will decide who tops Pool A and earns the easier draw through the competition’s knock-out stages. The 23 year-old was cited for a dangerous clear out of England full-back Mike Brown where the independent citing commissioner Steve Hinds found he had charged “into a ruck or maul without the use of arms or grasping the player” during Saturday’s 33–13 win at Twickenham. The result should be considered a win for the

Wallabies, as Hooper faced the potential of a tournament-ending suspension had his actions been deemed mid-range. The base level for the charge normally carries a two-week ban, but Hooper was given a lighter sentence as the judiciary took into account his contrition, good on and off-field record and good behaviour during the hearing.

The odds are stacked against captain Nick Price’s Internationals. Australia’s world No.2 Day is the only top 10 player in the side, while the Americans have six of the top 10, including No.1 Jordan Spieth, at the four-day contest to be staged at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon, South Korea from Thursday. All 12 American players are in the top 28 in the world rankings while six of the Internationals are from outside the top 30. History wont help the Internationals. Since the biennial team event began in 1994, the International side has only one victory - at Royal Melbourne in 1998, and one tie, in South Africa in 2003. They have lost eight times.

Wallabies skipper Stephen Moore was confident there was enough depth in the squad to cover the short-term loss of Hooper and heaped praise on young McMahon.

Should it win, Australia will face the runner-up from Pool B – likely to be Scotland or Japan.

“I think every chance (McMahon has) got to play for Australia so far he’s been outstanding,” he said. “He’s been man of the match a couple of times. He’s a quality player and he’s shown that for the Rebels.

A loss would set up a heavyweight showdown with the Pool B winner, which is expected to be South Africa.

“And at training he’s just been terrific, really ripping in every training. He’s ready to go if he’s needed.”

Coach Michael Cheika already has two readymade replacements to call on.

In tyro Sean McMahon and the tough-as-teak Ben McCalman the Wallabies have two gifted back-rowers who have already impressed at this World Cup and are ideal stop-gap options.

With the overall points in the four-day contest dropping from 34 to 30, Day and his team are hopeful things can be different this time around as their depth won’t be as exposed as in previous encounters. “I know I will have to play my best for the team and so will all of the boys if we are going to be successful,” said Day, who has an individual 4-4-2 record from his two previous cups. “We have managed to get a deduction in overall points this time around so hopefully that will mean it is competitive going into the Sunday singles. “If we can get there with a chance I know the boys are going to be fired up to finally get our hands on that trophy.” Scott is the team’s veteran with the 35 year-old having played in the past six Presidents Cups for a 12-15-3 individual record. He will also be called upon to lead from the front and will be the team room’s motivational

mentor along with captain Nick Price. Schwartzel (5-4-1) is the only International team member with a winning record in the competition while Leishman (2-2-0), Matsuyama (1-3-1), Oosthuizen (1-3-1) and Grace (0-4-0) return for their second cup after being part of the 2013 loss. Bowditch, Lee, Jaidee, Lahiri and Bae make their debuts in the competition. The Americans are headlined by Spieth and also boast top 10 players in Bubba Watson (No.4), Rickie Fowler (No.5), Dustin Johnson (No.8), Jim Furyk (No.9) and Zach Johnson (No.10). Mostert looks for back-to-back success fourth-place performance at the Sandown 500 and he is hungrier than ever for success after being forced to sit on the sidelines last year. The three-time Bathurst winner and co-driver Warren Luff were ruled out of the event when the latter suffered brake failure during practice, which resulted in a huge shunt that rendered the car unrepairable for the race. “I think we have got the package to win the race,” Tander said. “I think in the last third of the race at Sandown we were as fast as anyone out there so as long as we can get ourselves into a position to capitalise on that then I think we do have the package to win the race.

G

ood qualifying sessions will make defending champion Chaz Mostert hard to beat again at this weekend’s Bathurst 1000.

After setting the 14th fastest time in his Prodrive Racing Ford on Mount Panorama last year, Mostert was booted to the back of the grid for passing under a red flag in qualifying. However, famously, he and co-driver Paul Morris raced through from 26th on the grid to win an incident-packed race, passing Jamie Whincup’s spluttering Red Bull Holden on the last lap. No driver had previously won at Bathurst from further back than 19th on the starting line and it was only the young guns second crack at the mountain. Hence the possibility to start Sunday’s great race closer to the front than the back and Mostert, along with new co-driver Cameron Waters will be right in the mix for back-to-back honours. Currently second in the championship behind team-mate Mark Winterbottom, he already heads to Bathurst with 10 pole positions this year which has him on-track to pass Whincup’s all-time record of 13 poles in one season. Surprisingly, Mostert has never set an official qualifying time for the Bathurst 1000, let alone

participated in the Top 10 Shootout. “I haven’t really made (the most of) qualifying for the race before,” the 23 year-old said. “Hopefully I can make top 10. It would be awesome to thrash a V8 Supercar around Bathurst as the only car on the track. “That’s the plan. We will see how that goes but not everything goes to plan at Bathurst. “But it proved last year it doesn’t really matter where you start - it just matters if your car is quick.” Mostert showed his endure form finishing second behind Winterbottom and Steve Owen at last month’s Sandown 500. His teammate will again be the one to chase down on Sunday with the Prodrive Racing team vying for its third straight Bathurst triumph. It will have a stunning five-car assault on the mountain including David Reynolds, who sits third in the championship. Mostert and 21 year-old Waters will become the youngest-ever combination to claim victory in Bathurst 1000 history if they can triumph on the weekend. Meanwhile, Garth Tander is confident the Holden Racing Team has all the ingredients needed to win this year’s race. Tander hopes were renewed by a strong

“Obviously it was hugely disappointing not to be a part of the event last year sitting there watching the event unfold with how crazy it was. “But everyone has got a Bathurst story as far as heartache goes and we are not focussed on last year now. “We want to make sure we have a fast comfortable car for the last hour and a half come Sunday, and if we can do that then we will be in the game.” Tander’s Holden Racing teammate James Courtney will miss this weekend’s racing due to injuries sustained in a freak pit lane incident in August. Veteran Russell Ingall will replace the 2010 V8 champion and now partner Jack Perkins after winning the 1995 and 1997 Bathurst events with Jack’s father Larry. The Holden Racing Team has unveiled special Star Wars themed liveries for this weekend while Erebus Motorsport has striking new pink look for its Ash Walsh and Jack Le Brocq entry, under a major sponsorship deal with Wendy’s. Erebus’ number one combination of the Davison brother, Will and Alex, had a new Penrite-backed Mercedes released recently. Nissan will celebrate its first Australian Touring Car Championship title (won by Jim Richards in the Skyline in 1990) by running a spectacular ‘retro’ livery on the Michael Caruso and Dean Fiore-driven Altima.

Spring Racing news STABLE WATCH Ciaron Maher

Best still to come for Maher R ising young trainer Ciaron Maher is quickly emerging as a big player in Victorian racing and this could be the spring when he really hits the heights of the top ranks.

Caulfield, Maher has several frontrunners ready to shine over the coming Spring Carnival.

He may even consider the Cox Plate for Set Square if she proves to be up to it.

The pride of his stable at present is a striking black filly that he has described as his “Mercedes”.

Kapour was third in the Listed Premier’s Cup at Rosehill on 29 August (nominated in Hill Stakes and Naturalism on 19/9)

His horse’s nous has widely been compared to the great Bart Cummings and he has shown that through his prodigious number of winners on the country and mid-week city circuit.

Petite Filous has blitzed recent fields of strong three year-olds and looks primed for the Group One Coolmore Stakes at Flemington on Derby day.

The six year-old gelding is en route towards to Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but could struggle for a start after a disappointing run in the Bart Cummings last Sunday.

The former jumps jockey has been the in-form trainer this year, beginning to take over the Saturday winners list as well.

A slip-up in the Moir Stakes shouldn’t have done too much harm and the return to Flemington against her own age should see her back up the front again.

He also has others nominated for the big races including Akavoroun, Light Up Manhattan, Azkadelle, Brockhoff, Jameka and Tucano.

On a steep rise is another three year-old Bon Aurum who has put himself right in Caulfield Guineas contention this Saturday.

Maher’s not left out of having a focus on the sprint races as well, with Srikandi likely to contest the Group One Darley Sprint Classic at Flemington in November before looking towards the Hong Kong Sprint in December.

He first tasted Group One success within three years of gaining his trainer’s licence. Some of the best trainers took far longer or are still trying. It was with a rank outsider Tears I Cry too in an emotional 2007 Emirates Stakes which is still talked about today.

He is more workmanlike than the stable star, considered more four-wheel drive than flashy sedan.

He has also had widespread success in his accustomed jumps format, winning the Grand National Steeplechase and our own Great Eastern Steeplechase at Oakbank.

Then Maher has a couple of top chances heading towards to the big Cups with the Caulfield Cup the ideal targets for last year’s VRC Oaks winner Set Square and a Melbourne Cup preparation being set up for his French import Kapour.

Training out of Warrnambool in south-west Victorian and with stables allocated at

Srikandi elevated her status to one of Australia’s leading sprinters with Group 1 wins at her past two starts in Queensland, taking out the Stradbroke Handicap and the Tatts Tiara Stakes. Be assured – Ciaron Maher will make a mark this spring.

Plate favouritism up for grabs J ockey Glen Boss is confident Kermadec can cement his position at the top of Cox Plate betting in Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Boss will renew acquaintances with Chris Waller’s star four year-old this week after winning the Doncaster Mile in April aboard the horse and in his first two starts this preparation before missing his last-start George Main Stakes victory through suspension. After riding the entire in a gallop alongside stablemate and Caulfield Guineas favourite Press Statement at Caulfield on Tuesday, Boss said he wouldn’t swap Kermadec for any other horse on Saturday. The triple Melbourne Cup-winning rider said Kermadec had no trouble with the track while the George Main Stakes effort had the son of Teofilo in terrific condition for the Caulfield Stakes.

“He’s probably in the top three horses in Australia,” he said. “He was good this morning (at Tuesday trackwork). He looks tight now and he looks ready,”

Though yet to proof himself over 1600m, Boss said Kermadec had given him no reason to doubt he could run a strong 2000 metres. “All the signs are there but he’s got to go out and do it, especially at this level where there’s nowhere to hide,” he said. “He’ll meet some really good horses on Saturday and he’s got to go out there and show that he’s a really good mile-and-a-quarter (2000m) horse but all the indications are that he will. “He’s a relaxed customer in his work and he’s a push-button type of colt and now he’s just

got to tick that box.”

Kermadec, the $3 favourite in opening markets, will face a maximum of eight rivals in the Caulfield Stakes, including the top local galloper Fawkner, the return from England of Criterion, Goldophin’s early Cox Plate favourite Contributor, Gai Waterhouse’s Pornichet, Happy Trails backing up from last Sunday’s Turnbull Stakes, Entirely Platinum hot off last Saturday’s Epsom Handicap in Sydney and improving New Zealander Mongolian Khan. The other Group One of the day is the Toorak Handicap (1600m) with the main contenders being Darren Weir’s pair Lucky Hussler and Stratum Star, Chris Waller’s Flamingo Star, Lee and Anthony Freedman’s Disposition, Mick Price’s Moonovermanhattan, David Hayes and Tom Dabernig’s Jacquinot Bay, and Ciaron Maher’s Akavoroun in a wide open race.

Price could be one to make a statement

Q

uality colt Press Statement will have to overcome a wide barrier to win the Group One Caulfield Guineas on Saturday.

He remains a dominant favourite though, despite coming up with barrier 14 in a capacity field of 16 plus one emergency for Saturday’s $1 million feature over 1600m. The Chris Waller-trained Press Statement ventured to Caulfield on Tuesday morning for a familiarisation gallop with stablemate Kermadec, the Cox Plate favourite. “I think the thing with this horse is that he’s very tractable, he can race on the pace, midfield, wherever you want him to be,” Waller said. “He travels on the bridle and he’s not a horse that gets out of his comfort zone hitting flat spots in his races.” Press Statement overcame a similar bad gate to win the Group One J J Atkins in June when he jumped from barrier 10 of 12.

He convincingly won the Stan Fox Stakes last start after running in the Golden Rose without luck. A former Waller champion Shooting To Win came through the same two races last year before winning the Guineas. Mick Price will put blinkers on Ready For Victory after the colt’s disappointing performance in the Guineas Prelude last start. Price said Ready For Victory was cherry ripe for Saturday and pleased him with his work on Tuesday. His new jockey Glen Boss, who replaces the suspended Damien Oliver, was bullish about the colt’s prospects after he worked at Caulfield in company with stablemate and Guineas rival Tarzino. Ready For Victory, second favourite behind Press Statement, wore the blinkers on Tuesday and Price also gave him a barrier test in them last Friday.

Bowman on right Girl

T

rainer Peter Moody will give Sydney’s leading hoop Hugh Bowman the chance to win a second-straight Group One Thousand Guineas by re-uniting him with Pasadena Girl on Saturday. Bowman won the 1600m feature for fillies on the Chris Waller-trained Amicus at Caulfield last year. His only race ride on the Peter Moodytrained three year-old resulted in victory in the Group One Champagne Stakes in Sydney during the autumn. Pasadena Girl has barrier seven in a field of 11 and has been installed a $4.40 second favourite behind Stay With Me, from the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable. Moody has Pasadena Girl on an Oaks path and says she has improved from her first two starts this preparation when second in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes and fifth in the Prelude. “Her coat has finally started to shift which tells me she’s coming right at the right

time of the year,” he said. “She’ll present tidier on Saturday than she has in her last couple of starts and I think she’s on track to run extremely well. “I’m mindful that she’s got the Oaks beyond this and there’s still good improvement in her, but I took heart from viewing probably most of her opposition at her last couple of runs and felt that she was the one that’s probably got significant improvement in her, where some of the others might have had limited improvement.” From barrier four Stay With Me will be attempting to emulate her dam 2006 Thousand Guineas winner Miss Finland and holds slight favouritism at $4.20. Stay With Me beat Pasadena Girl to win the Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) last month before finishing sixth in the Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m). Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Miss Gunpowder, trained by Adelaide’s Phillip Stokes, has the outside draw while Edward

While Price is happy with Ready For Victory’s draw of barrier four with his turn of foot, he is not as pleased with barrier three for stablemate Tarzino. “Tarzino is a big, long-striding horse and I would’ve preferred him to draw midfield or a little wider,” Price said. “He’s going to have a very good finish on him but he doesn’t want to be getting held up while those around him are going around the outside.” Trainer Robbie Laing will follow a gut instinct and start Kentucky Flyer in the Caulfield Guineas.Laing scratched Kentucky Flyer from last Sunday’s UCI Stakes at Flemington after taking the conditions, and his gut, into account. “I thought, what am I doing going to Flemington trying to run third or fourth when, it’s possibly not a vintage year, he’s already won at 1500 metres and the Guineas is a million dollar race,” he said. “He ran a bottler last start, ran his last 600m in 34.5 (seconds) so I’ll go to the Caulfield Guineas and he’s worth his place.” Kentucky Flyer carried 60kg into third place behind Tarzino last time out at Caulfield on September 19 and has thrived since.

Manifold Stakes winner Badawiya fared little better in 10, but both are $6.50 for Saturday’s race. Mick Price said Badawiya would likely have to come across with Miss Gunpowder who raced on speed when she won the Prelude. Ciaron Maher’s Jameka and Super Cash, trained by Andrew Noblet, could be a couple outsiders worth following. Jameka has filled the minor placings in her two starts this campaign in the Atlantic Jewel Stakes and the Thousand Guineas Prelude while Super Cash flashed home in both her starts, finishing second behind Petite Filous in the Cap D’Antibes and fourth in the Prelude. “I reckon she’s spot-on for Saturday,” Jameka’s rider Mark Zahra claimed. “I couldn’t fault her.” Zahra doesn’t believe there is a lot between some of the fillies in Saturday’s race. “We should get a nice run from there (barrier two),” Noblet said of Super Cash’s hopes. “You’re not worried about getting in. You can be where you want to be rather than being dictated to.”

Horse Racing news INTERNATIONAL Watch

It went to Japan last year following Admire Ratki’s success. Taufan’s Melody became the first international winner of the Caulfield Cup back in 1998 and since then we have also seen Godolphin’s All The Good (2008) and Dunaden (2012) take it back to England and France respectively. The Japanese will be back again with Fame Game and Hokko Brave as mentioned last week so let’s take a look at the British nominees. Snow Sky has gone to a new level in 2015 and is rated as one of Europe’s leading middle distance gallopers.

defeating a high calibre field that included Eagle Top, Postponed, Telescope and Red Cadeaux. A slow-maturing stayer, Trip To Paris has become one of the most improved horses in Europe in 2015. His best performance to date was in the Group One Gold Cup over 4000m at Royal Ascot on 18 June, when he upset a host of more established rivals. Trip To Paris was then beaten a half length by Big Orange and Quest For More when third in the Group Two Goodwood Cup over 3200m at Glorious Goodwood before a slightly below par fifth to Max Dynamite in the Group Two Lonsdale Cup over 3200m at York on 21 August.

As a three year-old, he finished fourth behind 2014 Cox Plate winner Adelaide in last year’s Group Two King Edward VII Stakes over 2400m at Royal Ascot.

Quest For More took out the feature handicap Northumberland Plate over 3200m at Newcastle, the biggest race of his career thus far, defeating a quality field including Max Dynamite.

As a fully mature four year-old, Snow Sky produced a dominant display, leading all of the way to take out the prestigious Group Two Hardwicke Stakes over 2400m at Royal Ascot on 20 June,

He has continually stepped up as the races have gotten stronger, showing tactical speed and can race handy to the pace, and has plenty of stamina, but is at best on good tracks.

IT’s a joke “PLEASE STOP CHECKING YOUR WATCH all the time, its distracting!” the golfer told his caddy. “This isn’t a watch, it’s a compass!” the caddy replied. DO YOU THINK IT IS A SIN TO PLAY GOLF on Sunday?” the golfer asked his caddy. “The way you play, it’s a sin any day of the week!” the caddy answered. “WELL, I’VE NEVER PLAYED THIS BADLY BEFORE!” the golfer said. “I didn’t realise you’d played before,” his caddy responded. “GEE GOLF IS A FUNNY GAME,” the golfer laughed. “It’s not supposed to be.” His caddy retorted.
