Clarke should be applauded

N

ormally a retiring Australian cricket captain is steeped in praise.

Even a weeping Kim Hughes back in the 80s was honoured for his short time in the country’s top cricketing position. However, current outgoing skipper Michael Clarke has come in for much criticism and it is disappointing because the Australian cricket captain is often seen in a better light than the Australian prime minister. Since Clarke made his announcement to cease his tenure in the game, many so-called cricket aficionados have simply attacked his character, in particular past players and coaches. His personality certainly polarised those within the game, including the fans, as he came onto the scene with the flashy blonde-tipped hair and tattooed persona of a know-itall kid who paraded around the glamorous girlfriend. At that time, he could probably be compared to a Nick Kygrios of today.

Australian public was used to. His abilities were duly rewarded with the captaincy, ahead of vice-captain at the time and fan favourite Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne who many thought should have taken over. He was also taking over from a legend of the game in the much quieter spoken Ricky Ponting who let his form do the talking and definitely did not seek media attention. Clarke, on the other hand, wanted to do things his way and seemed to welcome the limelight, which put many off. He came across as brash but the team was still performing well, so some of his faults were overlooked. His results on the field put him among the game’s greats. Ponting has, at least, been one of the former players to pay tribute to his successor’s career. However, the cone of silence from past captains honouring their latest alumni has spoken louder than if they had given their opinions. Former Australian coach John Buchanan was certainly out of

line with his comments, declaring Clarke had eroded the culture of the Baggy Green. There have also been other former teammates, such as Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds, who haven’t been so pleasant with their assessments of Clarke either. Only Warne and recently Ponting have come out in support of him upon his retirement. A departing Australian cricket captain deserves better. As a person in one of the most high-profile positions of the country, even putting aside it being on the sports field, Clarke should be applauded for his accomplishments in the game. At least he will always be remembered for bonding a broken group upon the passing in November last year of dear friend and teammate Phil Hughes. The country saw a different side of the perceived overzealous youngster and the courage and humility shown endeared him to the nation. Well done ‘Pup’ on a most distinguished career.

However, it was all in vain, as they once again succumbed to the All Blacks at Eden Park in Auckland, where the Aussies have not won since 1986, foregoing their best chance yet to bring home the much-coveted trophy.

Tough decisions for Campo

I

performs in 2016, even if players say they want to take something into next season.

t’s a good position to be in trying to secure a spot in the finals, but Adelaide interim coach Scott Camporeale will have had some tough decisions this week surrounding the line-up that takes on Brisbane on Saturday night.

Isn’t it then really just a blight on how they have played over the rest of the season when so much more was expected? The Power’s clash on Friday night against Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium is still being billed as the grand final many were anticipating. But it is not to be.

Midfielder Richard Douglas appears ready to return after appendix surgery two weeks ago, leaving Camporeale with the testing task of dropping someone from the side which decimated Essendon last week.

What should have pleased Hinkley was how Brandon Ah Chee stepped up last week and Sam Gray the week before when given a full game. He will look to others to show the same desire over the concluding weeks.

Douglas’ extra drive out of the middle will be valuable for the Crows when they come up against West Coast and Geelong to decide their finals fate. Having the ability to regain touch against the Lions could prove crucial. Under immediate pressure is David Mackay who has worn the green vest two weeks in a row. First year players Riley Knight and Rory Aitken have held their own in the big league and offered the side much needed composure and improved kicking efficiency around the ground but Camporeale may believe their inexperience should make way for a more senior head. There are plenty of players in the SANFL as well working hard to regain their places. An even more important task for Camporeale this week will be to enforce in his players that Brisbane will present more of a contest than the Bombers provided last week. Finals will not be reached if Adelaide drops this game at home on Saturday night so the intensity shown around the ball last week along with the attacking pressure evoked to keep the ball inside the forward 50 will be vital again. The Lions eased their wooden spoon position by accounting for Carlton last week. But do they really want to win another game over the next three weeks which could put them above State rival Gold Coast and miss out on their desired draft option in key forward Josh Schache in the process? Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley will publicly express his pleasure in his side’s efforts to show more over the last month of the season. But he must be frustrated watching the lift in pressure his players provided in beating GWS Giants last week when finals became out of the question. To finish the year strongly is what the club needs but it really won’t have many implications on how the side comes back and

Port Adelaide’s season has been no laughing matter but a win over potential premier Hawthorn could lift expectations for 2016. Photo: AAP

Footy footnotes It was inevitable but as Sportsbeat has iterated in the past, Essendon couldn’t move on from its current predicament until James Hird sadly departed the scene. He appeared a forlorn figure last week, shattered and lacking motivation, even his assistants didn’t seem to be offering much guidance. Now we know why. • With his current form, Adelaide now cannot afford to lose free agent Patrick Dangerfield – the club must offer him a weekly helicopter to and from Moggs Creek to keep the family ties in check – well, it’s worked for others • It’s conceivable that the Crows could have five All-Australians this year – Patrick Dangerfield, Eddie Betts, Daniel Talia, Sam Jacobs and Rory Laird – and still miss the finals – Chad Wingard is Port’s only real chance this season of earning selection • The trade whispers are beginning to rumble with the likes of Chris Yarran, Jake Carlisle, Steven Motlop, Stefan Martin, Matthew Leuenberger, Lachie Henderson and Scott Selwood all touted as likely to have new homes next season • Wow $2.5 billion over six years for the new TV rights, double the $1.25 billion over five years of the last deal, but will that bring some commonsense with money spent on score review equipment and ticket pricing

Does Matthew Lobbe come straight back and has Jay Schulz played his last game for Port Adelaide too? Only time will tell. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN • Did Carlton perfectly disguise ‘tanking’ last week? – gaining a 19-point advantage by quarter-time only to fade dismally and lose by 64 points, basically ensuring itself the number one draft pick for Jacob Weitering • There is obviously bad blood still between ex-Blue Mitch Robinson and his former teammate Michael Jamison after he refused to shake his hand at the end of the Brisbane v Carlton game • Has Eagle Chris Masten become the Suarez of the AFL? • Are West Coast and Fremantle matches the most heated derby clashes in the AFL? • Among all the hype the women’s game received last week, it’s probably understandable that it gained a wider television audience in Melbourne on at Sunday lunchtime than the EssendonAdelaide clash on Saturday up against local sporting competitions • However, there is certainly interest enough in women’s football (it is the largest growing sport in the country at the moment) that a six-team national competition may not be far off (with 2017 suggested starting date) – it will be made easier aligned to current AFL clubs so Crows or Power who takes the reins? • Sadly the year of tragedy in the AFL has continued – it was heart-breaking to hear the news of Brett Ratten’s son’s death in a car crash last weekend – Condolences to the Ratten family and the Hawthorn football community

AFL PREVIEW ROUND21

BY DION HAYMAN

HAWTHORN V PORT ADELAIDE

GOLD COAST V ESSENDON

This round 21 clash between Hawthorn and Port Adelaide might have loomed as a grand final preview at the start of the year rather than a mis-match between a side going at a hat-trick of flags and the year’s biggest disappointment. That’s despite Port winning their previous clash in round four at Adelaide Oval by eight points, having unleashed its best quarter for the season on the startled visitors at the start of the match. The Power burst out of the blocks, slamming on the first seven goals of the game to lead 7.1 to 0.1 after 18 minutes. By the 17-minute mark of the second term, Port led by 58 points, 11.3 to 1.5. The Hawks still trailed by 41 points at three quarter-time but came home with a rush, adding 5.4 to nothing in the final term to go down by eight points, 15.9 (99) to 13.13 (91). Jay Schulz scored five goals without a miss. Hawthorn has still won six of its past eight games against Port. Remarkably, these sides have never met at Docklands.

It’s been almost a year since the Suns clashed with the Bombers. Essendon won by 19 points when they last met in round 22 last year at Docklands. Brendon Goddard scored three goals as the Bombers won 16.12 (108) to 13.11 (89) while Tom Lynch scored four for the Suns. It was their fourth loss from four meetings with the Bombers. Previously, Essendon had won by 139 points at Docklands in 2011 in a remarkable match where they led 15.4 to 0.1 at quarter-time. The Bombers also won by 17 points at Carrara in 2012 after recovering a seven-point deficit at three quarter-time with four goals from Stewart Crameri. Then they won by 43 points at Docklands in 2013 after Goddard’s one man show of 28 kicks, 12 marks and 10 handballs. This will be just their second trip to face the Suns at Carrara.

Richmond ended a seven-game losing streak against Collingwood with a five-point win at the MCG in round seven. It broke the Magpies’ best streak against the Tigers since their 11 straight wins from 1909-14. It was also just the second time since 1982 these sides had played a game decided by less than a kick. The Magpies led by 20 points at quarter-time, 4.4 to 1.2, and still by one point at the final change but Brett Deledio’s two goals in three minutes midway through the final term gave the Tigers the impetus to break their drought. Despite losing, Collingwood kicked the ton for the third straight game against Richmond. The Tigers haven’t managed to restrict Collingwood to less than 85 points since 2006 when they held them to 6.9 (45). Richmond hasn’t won two in a row against the Pies since winning that same match.

Just eight meetings ago, Geelong and St Kilda played off for the 2009 premiership. Geelong won that day by 12 points. St Kilda won both of their meetings in 2010 including the qualifying final. However since then, the Cats have won the past five with St Kilda averaging less than 55 points in those five games. Their last two meetings have both been at Geelong and have ended with almost identical score lines. In 2013, Geelong won by 101 points, 21.11 (137) to 5.6 (36) after kicking 17 goals to one after quarter-time. Tom Hawkins finished with five goals and Steven Motlop four. While last year, Geelong won by 96 points, 20.13 (133) to 5.7 (37) with the Cats kicking 16 goals to two in the first three quarters. Mitch Duncan, Joel Selwood, Josh Walker and Hawkins all booted three goals. The Saints will be relieved this game is at Docklands where the Cats lead narrowly seven wins to six. Sydney has won six of the previous seven ‘Battles of the Bridge’ including their first meeting this season in round three by 21 points at the SCG. Sydney won 16.15 (111) to 12.18 (90) after leading comfortably for most of the day. Lance Franklin scored five goals and Issac Heeney four in just his third match. Rhys Palmer booted three for the Giants. GWS’s only victory against Sydney came in their only previous meeting at the Sydney Showgrounds. It was the opening round last season when the fledgling side stunned the Swans with a rousing last quarter to record a 32-point win. Sydney led by three points at the last change but the Giants finished with 6.4 to 0.5 to win 15.9 (99) to 9.13 (67). Jeremy Cameron booted four goals.

Adelaide has won four of its past five games against Brisbane including the last three in a row. However, this will be Brisbane’s first game against the Crows at Adelaide Oval. Incredibly, it brings to an end a run of five successive meetings between these sides at the Gabba. The Lions last played the Crows in Adelaide in 2011 at Football Park when Brisbane won by 40 points. It brought their record against the Crows in Adelaide to six wins and eight losses. While the Crows have enjoyed recent success against the Lions, it hasn’t been easy. Five of Adelaide’s last six wins against Brisbane have been by 19 points or less. The one exception was in 2014 at the Gabba when the Crows won by 105 points, 25.18 (168) to 9.9 (63). In round 13 earlier this year, the Crows came from 24 points behind at the last change to win by 13 as they booted six unanswered goals in the final quarter.

Fremantle and North Melbourne have shared seven wins apiece from their past 14 clashes but the Dockers have won three of their past four including their most recent clash in round eight this year at Subiaco. The Dockers opened with five goals to one and extended their lead to 34 points by half-time before adding another eight goals to one in the second half as the Roos were held goalless in the final term. The home side eventually won by 73 points, 17.13 (115) to 5.12 (42). Michael Walters finished with four goals. North had won their only meeting last year, which was also at Subiaco, by 13 points, 10.14 (74) to 8.13 (61), despite trailing at every interval. This is their first meeting at Docklands since 2012 when Freo won by 53 points. That remains their only win against North in five games at the ground.

Melbourne snapped a seven-game losing streak against Carlton with a 23-point win in their most recent meeting at the MCG in round four last year. It was Carlton’s best sequence against Melbourne since winning 15 straight from 1976-83. The Demons trailed by two points at quarter-time but scored nine goals to four thereafter to win 12.9 (81) to 7.16 (58). The win also ended a run of 12 successive losses for the Demons. It was Carlton’s lowest score against Melbourne since 2006 when the Demons won by 105 points. The sides meet at the MCG for the seventh consecutive occasion. West Coast has won five of its past seven games against the Western Bulldogs. Although they went down at the last time of asking in the opening round of the season, despite taking a two-point lead into the final change. The match was at Docklands and the home side kicked 3.7 to 2.1 in the final term to win by 10 points, 14.13 (97) to 14.3 (87). Jake Stringer scored three goals for the winners while Jamie Cripps scored five straight for the losers. This game is at Subiaco where the Eagles have won their last three against the Bulldogs. The Dogs last beat the Eagles in Perth in 2010 by 60 points when they slammed on 10 goals to three in the second half. But the Bulldogs have just three wins and a draw from 17 games against the Eagles in Perth. In fact, they have just seven wins and a draw from 26 matches against both WA teams.

SANFL PREVIEW ROUND 18 More in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

BY CHRIS KENDALL

CENTRAL DISTRICT V GLENELG

WEST ADELAIDE V NORWOOD

The race for the last spot in the finals is down to South Adelaide and Central District, although Central sits two games and more than one percent behind the Panthers. The week off last week freshens them well for two such critical games, with the first against an opponent that will be snarling after leading for all but a few minutes which cost it an upset victory over the Magpies. Tigers coach Matthew Lokan will no doubt remind the playing group of the advantage it held to keep the positive vibe for this week. The Bulldogs simply cannot afford another slip if they are to make the run for September and coach Roy Laird will be wary of Glenelg bursting out of the blocks again. Slowing the early tempo will be a vital cog in the overall wheel of the game for Central to play the game on its terms. With the Tigers the leading clearance side, closing down their space will be a focus for Laird. Glenelg should not be underestimated, but having not won at this venue since 2008, that trend should continue here.

West missed a golden opportunity last week to consolidate a topthree spot, looking flat and off its game from the opening bounce. The late withdrawal of ball magnet Chris Schmidt hurt its clean ball movement from the stoppages. Norwood did largely as it liked, demolishing North Adelaide, but 13 goals from 36 scoring shots robbed it of an opportunity to gain momentum leading into this week. The Bloods have struggled against Norwood recently, winning only once in their past 16 encounters. Much of that was with a far more defensive game style than coach Mark Mickan has applied this season. As the highest scoring team in the competition, West has proven it could hit the scoreboard heavily and quickly. This will give the Norwood hierarchy plenty to consider when looking to close down the match. The Redleg injury list is slowly shortening, but it may mean some players will need a run in the reserves before pushing to league company. West is playing a potent brand of football, but history says Norwood can negate this.

PORT MAGPIES V SOUTH ADELAIDE

STURT V ADELAIDE RESERVES

South holds the advantage to retain fifth spot, but it will be presented with a tough test this week. Last week was expected to be a stern assignment for the Panthers and they responded strongly. Port looked in trouble all night against Glenelg, before a late surge gave them the points by the narrowest margin. South’s record at Alberton leaves plenty to be desired – only 12 wins from 108 encounters here – and the manner of Port’s barnstorming finish last week will be sitting in its psyche. The Panther midfield is one of the most potent going around and Nic Schwarz has stepped into the void left by the injured Nick Liddle, particularly in the clearances. The Magpies proved their ability to work their way back into a contest that looked lost. Led by hard running, risk taking and moving the ball quickly into an attack coach Garry Hocking will aim for the same style this week against one of the quicker ball moving teams. Most factors suggest a Magpies’ victory.

A match that will have no bearing on the finals, but it will still be important with Adelaide’s AFL arm chasing a finals berth. The Double Blues will use the remainder of the season to look toward 2016, as well as testing different structures and game plan aspects with a view to the future. Adelaide kicked the highest score of its short history in their last encounter in round 10, which kick started its late-season surge. Sturt mentor Seamus Maloney would have taken notes from that match with a view to addressing some of the deficiencies raised. One area that Sturt has struggled this year is diversity in attack. Recalling Matthew Duldig against Central yielded five goals, but among a total of only five separate goal-kickers. This opens the opportunity for the Adelaide defence to feast upon errant Sturt forward 50 entries. With the AFL arm still pressing in the finals mix, it should give stability to the SANFL side, which opens the chance for Adelaide here.

It’s first hosting last in what looks like a giant mis-match on paper. The Eagles consolidated top spot by holding off the Adelaide Reserves last week, with a number of their smaller forwards doing the damage. Only one goal combined to Michael Wundke and Andrew Ainger spells danger for a North Adelaide group lacking confidence and ripe for the picking if the two Eagles can get off the leash. The Roosters were all at sea after half time last week, kicking only three goals. While games like this can occasionally spring a huge upset, there are simply too many factors that would need to fall North’s way for this to get even remotely close. With a guaranteed first week of finals off, there may be temptation for Eagles coach Michael Godden to rest or rotate players over the past two games. But even if that eventuates, it will not be nearly enough to prevent a messy day for North.

England eyes record Ashes win

T

he urn is long gone but Michael Clarke’s men risk suffering an ignominy that has befallen no other Australian team in Ashes history.

“To make people proud is a great feeling and I think if we were to win 4-1, which is very much what we are focused on, hopefully we can make them even more proud.”

England has never recorded more than three Test wins in a home series against Australia.

England boasts an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-Test series, having recorded crushing wins in Cardiff, Birmingham and Nottingham.

There is nothing dour or defensive about the current side mentored by former NSW coach Trevor Bayliss. You can be sure it will be pushing for a slice of history when the fifth Test starts on Thursday at The Oval. “We want to win 4-1, we don’t want to finish on a downer,” paceman Steve Finn told ESPNcricinfo. “That would be such a disappointing way to end what has been such an exciting series.

Jimmy Anderson, who missed the fourth Test due to a side strain, bowled on Monday as he looked to prove his fitness for the dead rubber. On top of the historical taint that would come with defeat, Australia will cede second spot on the International Cricket Council’s Test rankings if it loses again. England will leap from number six to number two on the Test ladder with victory at The Oval, while it will climb to third if Australia

grab a win or draw at The Oval. Finn didn’t want to get carried away with talk of the future, but noted his side were desperate to “avenge” its 5-0 loss in the 2013-14 series. “It was deeply embarrassing being over there for that,” he said. “I didn’t even play a part in the series but I was there watching every day and it hurt to be beaten like that. “Six months ago no one stopped me, no one said hello - other than people hanging off scaffolding abusing me. “People (now) stop you and say ‘we’re proud of you’ and it’s lovely – that’s what going out there and doing it is all about.” BY ROB FORSAITH – AAP

om Rogic will make his long-awaited Socceroos return next month after the Celtic midfielder was named in coach Ange Postecoglou’s 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan. Rogic hasn’t played for Australia since a 4-3 friendly loss to Ecuador in London more than a year ago, but the nine-cap midfielder is finally fit and firing and has made a cracking start to the Scottish Premier League season, impressing Celtic coach Ronny Deila. The 22-year-old has been dogged by a persistent groin issue which held him back from involvement in Australia’s Brazil World Cup campaign and also this year’s Asian Cup, but his inclusion - together with recalls for Robbie Kruse and Massimo Luongo, who both missed the 2-1 win over Kyrgyzstan in June - means Postecoglou is now spoiled for choice in attack. “It’s a positive that we’ve been able to recall Massimo, Robbie and Tom Rogic

after they missed recent matches and they add attacking options to the squad for the two matches in Perth and Dushanbe,” Postecoglou said. “All three have regained fitness and started the season in form so they come back in and give us plenty of options and good depth in an attacking sense. “When you add them to the likes of Tim Cahill, Mat Leckie, Tomi Juric, Nathan Burns and Tommy Oar the fans in Perth have a lot to get excited about.” Postecoglou has sprung a couple of surprises in a squad otherwise laden with regulars Leyton Orient goalkeeper Alex Cisak has a chance to win his first Socceroos cap at the age of 26, while midfielder Jackson Irvine, who plays for Ross County in Scotland, returns nearly two years after making his one and only appearance for the national side. The squad includes just three A-League players in Aaron Mooy, Matt McKay and Tarek Elrich, but the recently-departed

Matthew Spiranovic, Tomi Juric and Mark Milligan are included. However, there was no room for Oliver Bozanic, Chris Ikonimidis, Daniel de Silva, Ivan Franjic, Eugene Galekovic, Mitch Langerak, Tomislav Mrcela or James Troisi. The Socceroos take on Bangladesh at nib Stadium on September 3 - the team’s first appearance in Perth since 2005 - before travelling to Dushanbe to face Tajikistan on September 8. BY VINCE RUGARI – AAP SOCCEROOS: Aziz Behich, Nathan Burns, Tim Cahill, Alex Cisak, Jason Davidson, Tarek Elrich, Adam Federici, Jackson Irvine, Mile Jedinak, Tomi Juric, Robbie Kruse, Mathew Leckie, Massimo Luongo, Ryan McGowan, Matt McKay, Mark Milligan, Aaron Mooy, Tommy Oar, Tom Rogic, Mat Ryan, Matthew Spiranovic, Alex Wilkinson, Bailey Wright.

A season-defining round

W

hile the finals foes have already been determined, there will still be some hotly fought contests over the last two weeks of the regular season in Division 1.

percentage looms as the deciding factor for which side earns a handy break in week one of the finals. The Gullies face Port District at Largs Reserve which is out of finals contention now and the Saints head to Salisbury North for a tricky encounter this week.

Top spot remains on the line and the double chance is also yet to be decided. What results from the Rostrevor Old Collegians and Payneham Norwood Union clash this week will have telling implications on the top three.

Concluding the penultimate minor round contest will be Sacred Heart OC and Adelaide University at Mitchell Park Oval. This will be SHOCs last chance to avoid a drop to Division 2 next season.

At present, if Henley does not lose a game then it is in prime position to stay third on the ladder.

Even with victory on Saturday, that won’t be a certainty but a loss will guarantee a demotion back to Division 2 next season.

However, if the Falcons continue winning as well then it will come down to percentage.

Win here and Sacred Heart OC will probably need to produce another next week against Portland as well to survive as the percentage gap to the Blacks is too great.

On the other hand, ROCs can still rise above them both if it overcomes Payneham Norwood Union and then beats the Sharks away the following week.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Therefore it is such an important contest for both sides at Campbelltown Oval on Saturday with finals approaching. Henley faces bottom side Portland at Port Reserve this week, but wouldn’t want to let its guard down. Tea Tree Gully and Goodwood Saints are locked together on 13 wins apiece and any slip-up could hand top spot to the other but

ADELAIDE AIRPORT DIVISIOn 2 It all comes down to this

I

t’s what we want to see in the last round of the season – numerous games still impacting on the final format of the top five.

There will be several shuffles of the ladder to complete the puzzle this week will all but top position to be decided. The double chance remains on offer to three sides – Modbury, Prince Alfred OC and Gaza. The former has the most difficult task of remaining in its current spot of second on the ladder. The Hawks will welcome ladder leader Unley Mercedes Jets to Modbury Sports Reserve on Saturday and while top spot is out of their reach percentage-wise, a win is vital to hold

onto their top-three position. A heavy loss could still result in a fall down to fourth on the ladder where a knockout final awaits. The third-placed Reds have the easiest match-up on Saturday, hosting winless Gepps Cross, and a sizable victory could be rewarded with a home qualifying final, depending on Modbury’s outcome. The closeness of the competition was highlighted last week when a loss for the Eagles saw them plummet to fourth, but bouncing back against SMOSH West Lakes could see them regain the double chance. Then across at Scotch College, old rivals will be vying for a place in the elimination final,

with it being curtains on 2015 for the loser. Scotch OC has been in the top five all season and to drop out now would be a catastrophe for the rising ex-college outfit. However, fellow ex-college boys of St Peters OC would welcome the opportunity to take its rival’s spot and keep its premiership prospects alive. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Raggies, Iggies set for a classic

A

thelstone and Old Ignatians should produce a tight battle to kick off their qualifying final at Max Amber Sports field on Saturday.

The sides come in to this clash with winning form in the final minor round to book their second-chance game. Athelstone, second on the ladder, beat Mitcham at home by 84 points last week. The Raggies led by 49 points at half time and went on with the job in the second half. Scott Sullivan, Matthew Leigh (five goals) and Heath Fitzpatrick led the way for the Raggies. Old Ignatians outgunned Pembroke Old Scholars at Haslam Oval to win by 46 points last week. Old Iggies trailed the Kings by a goal at half time as scoring dried up for both teams in the second quarter. But a seven-goal third quarter set Iggies on their way, keeping the Kings to just 2.1 in the second half. Ben Owen-Thomas

(four goals), Austin Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch led the winner’s charge. When the sides met earlier in the season Athelstone won by 56 points at home in round one, while the most recent meeting in July ended in a draw, 9.12 (66) each) at Hunter Park, the sides within a goal at each change. Maybe the home ground can give the Raggies a leg up to advance by 10-22 points. Golden Grove and Pembroke Old Scholars could enter Saturday’s elimination final with interesting mindsets. Before last week’s final round Golden Grove might have expected an away elim final with a rough hope to grab a home final. For the Kings their hopes would have been an away qualifying final or, at the worst, a home elimination final. But results and margins saw the Kings fall to an away knockout match. The Kookaburras crushed Seaton Ramblers

by 90 points with Matthew Stent (three goals), Stuart Blair (four goals) and Shane Scudds (five goals) all firing to be among the best. Jarrad Sykes also kicked five goals. The Kings fell away in the second half to lose at home by 46 points to Old Ignatians with Ben Williams, Charles Canny and Eljay Connors among the key players. When the sides met earlier in the season the Kookaburras won at home by 19 points in May, while the Kings won at home, 7.13 to 7.11, in July. Not much in this one but, again, the home ground could be the key in a tight finish with Iggies by 14-26 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Magpies, Bulls face a knockout test A sensation already has hit this grade on the eve of the finals with Salisbury now playing the elimination final instead of a qualifying final. The team was docked four premiership points as a club penalty, imposed when its under 18s breached

sanctions last weekend and previously.

Salisbury meets Pooraka at home and is coming off a surprise loss to Kenilworth last week. Its best players were Justin McPherson, Ryan Paget and Scott McPherson. Pooraka prouduced a stunning

game to beat Westminster Old Scholars away to grab fifth place, kicking 7.12 to 3.3 in the second half to win by 48 points. Ben Russell, Dale Armstrong and Stephen Geer led the charge. Salisbury should be far too strong for the Bulls and looks the goods by 32-46 points. Kilburn now takes on Eastern Park in a qualifying final at Blair Athol Reserve after the Demons’ rise following Salisbury’s loss of points. This is the second meeting in a row for the teams. The Chics have been outstanding for most of the season, but particularly lately with big scores and winning margins. Kilburn’s best in its 52-point win last week were Jason Sandercock, Alex Brackstone and Mark McCallum (eight goals). Aaron Wood, Luke Taylor and Alex Tuckwell all played well for the Demons. Very hard to mount a case for the Demons this week with Kilburn tipped to proceed to the second semi final against North Haven the week following by 40-58 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

NINE NEWs DIVISIOn 5 Big Reds ready to leap into action

P

ara Hills will be looking to reproduce the performance that crushed its qualifying final opponent just two weeks ago.

The Big Reds revealed their premiership credentials at home that day but they are sure to face a different Colonel Light Gardens on its home soil on Saturday. Whether the Lions were foxing then too, we will have to wait and see. A few key players like goalsneaks Arren Harvey and Josh Bennett along with the important Sam Schofield were missing from their last encounter. Put them back alongside Daniel ScottCollings, Jacob Napier and Tom Groutsch and they certainly look a different proposition.

Paul Cree, Matthew Travis, Jake Westover, Peter Bradtke, Giao Chau, David Sykes and Jason Nuske of the Big Reds will have to be at their best again to defeat this opposition a second time in two weeks. This should be a cracking contest between two worthy sides that could pose a threat to Blackfriars OS’s back-to-back premiership aspirations. Elizabeth will host CBCOC in the elimination final with both sides coming off losses to the qualifying final combatants last week. The Eagles took it up to Colonel Light Gardens but found the second-placed outfit too strong in the run to the finish. The Dolphins could not match Para Hills and will need to find a lift from somewhere to

measure up to this week’s opponent. Two losses in a row has not been ideal preparation for CBCOC leading into a finals series but it did beat the Eagles when they last met in round 11 by 19 points. Elizabeth had the upper hand though when they met at Argana Park earlier in the year in round two. However, with the season over for the loser, this will be one desperate battle which either side has the ability of winning. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

L

ockleys and West Croydon look set to kick off their finals’ campaign with neighbouring love set aside for a few hours when they meet in a qualifying final at Lockleys Oval on Saturday. The western warriors have met twice in the season with Lockleys winning by 22 points at home in April and then repeating the dose by a whopping 102 points away in June.

Last week Lockleys gave Trinity Old Scholars a battering to win by 109 points with Shaun Dowling, Josh Stevenson and Carl Mickan all shining brightly. West Croydon was too solid for Brahma Lodge in their match away, winning by 54 points. Stanley Freeman, Chris Smith and Michael Francis were among the prime movers for the Hawks. The sides should go in with confidence with good form in recent rounds, although Lockleys has hardly slipped up all season. Finals can produce odd results. But the Hawks would need a big turnaround to trouble the Demons on their home deck. Lockleys by 32-46 points to progress to a second semi final against Smithfield.

Trinity old Scholars and Fitzroy clash in the elimination final at Trinity College. During the season Trinity beat the Lions by 13 points at home in April in a low scoring game, while it made it two wins with a four-point victory away in June. Last week Trinity was no match for Lockleys, falling by 109 points with Sam Peters, Matthew Burne and Ryan Clarke better players. Fitzroy had the bye but had already locked away fifth place before the round kicked off. Clashes during the season indicate there shouldn’t be much in this. But the home ground again could be the key for Trinity by 12-26 points. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

A

ll expectations are on Houghton Districts raiding the upcoming Division 7 finals series to claim the premiership with ease.

However, other finals contenders will still be trying to make the Raiders earn the title. They host Adelaide University in the second semi-final on Saturday and should get one hand on the trophy by taking a direct path to the grand final. Houghton Districts has had the measure of the whole competition throughout the minor round with only one hiccup along the way.

The Saints are still a major player in making the season-decider, despite their hopes being dented at the weekend. However, Mitchell Park does have the capability of sending the league newcomers crashing out early. Another wet day would probably work in the home side’s favour but should it clear up, Mitchell Park’s run could come to the fore and aid the likes of Lachlan Pike, Nathan McDonnell, Joel Regan, Jarrad Hyde, Stephen Tonkin and Ben Weekley. That was to the Blacks back in round 10 away when the home side rallied to smother its opponent’s more skilful ball movement.

However, Courtney knows he must have an impact on this weekend’s Sydney Motorsport Park Super Sprint to bank muchneeded championship points.

“The other guy (Winterbottom) had this much of a lead last year and the field was able to chase him down so the enduro side of the season could really turn that on its head. “I’m going into this second phase of the season with a lot more confidence and I think we can really bring this thing home.”

He has still been able to produce seven consecutive top-eight finishes to remain in touch of the championship lead, but he will need to find his way to the front of the grid to seriously challenge leader Mark Winterbottom.

In stark contrast to the flying Prodrive Fords of Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert, the factory Holden team has struggled for qualifying pace across much of the season and this is where Courtney needs to pick up speed.

Courtney currently sits fifth in the championship, 371 points behind Winterbottom at the halfway mark of the season.

“To win at Eastern Creek you’re going to need a good fast car, the team’s going to have to do a great job with strategy and pit stops and setting up the car,” he said.

“There’s still seven rounds to go and 300 points for each weekend so there’s still a lot more to play for,” he said. “I think the championship’s nowhere near over, we can still win this thing so we’re pushing 100 percent for that.

“Also I’m going to have to make no mistakes and drive away from the field. “It’s going to be a tough weekend – it’s always tough, but we’re up for the fight.”

IT’s a joke A WOMAN GOES TO THE DOCTOR, WORRIED ABOUT HER HUSBAND‘S TEMPER. “What’s the problem?” the doctor asked “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me,” the woman answered. “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down,” the doctor responded. Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” she said. “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick,” he replied.
