They also become too hard for the umpiring fraternity to adjudicate. As Melbourne coach Paul Roos said on Fox Footy during the week, our game of football was better 10 years ago. A good tackle was rewarded, incorrect disposal was a rule and congestion wasn’t as bad as it currently is. In the wisdom of the AFL, to make the game more flowing, it has continually tweaked the rules. But its only effect has been to create more stoppages, making it less free-flowing.

Now the league is talking about bringing in zones on the ground as are in place for the under-18s competition where a certain number of players must stay in a particular area to prevent flooding. Commentators are also having their say whether it be to stop the third man up in ruck contests, no kicking backwards in defence or no throw-ins between 50 metre lines. Just leave it alone. Different umpires even interpret the rules in different ways with each umpire having their own decisions on different rules, which simply causes more frustration. Holding the ball is a key case in point, especially when players hold the ball under an opponent to prevent it coming out. These interpretations are filtering down to lower levels of football, including juniors, and impacting on the game there as well. The AFL also says that umpires aren’t told to adjudicate a game differently from one week to the

next but there always seems to be a rule of the week that is punished specifically. This is where players are confused. Within games, things change with umpires putting the whistle away in tight matches, letting the games go, even without calling obvious infringements. If a player has been infringed or a correct tackle made, make the call whatever time of the game it is. With so much focus on them, umpires seem scared to make a decision in some instances while at other times they will just ping something for the sake of it because they will be judged later if they don’t. It feels random. The concern is umpires never seem to be accountable for having bad games. It is too late after a crucial game is lost for the umpiring boss Wayne Campbell to admit to mistakes being made. The rules just need to be simplified so all three umpires in any given game are on the same page and certainly not made more complicated by adding new ones. They need to work as a team - not as individuals. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Multiple Aussie sporting success on the world stage last weekend. Jason Day finally notched another USPGA victory with the Canadian Open, similarly Sam Stosur claimed her second tournament victory of the year and, love or hate him, Bernard Tomic did have his mind on the job to defend his Colombian title win of last year in Bogota.

The near-weekly booing of Sydney Swans’ dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes by crowds at many AFL matches is ridiculous and must stop immediately. The consistent booing began in 2013 when the star outed a 13-year-old girl for calling him an ape in a game against Collingwood. Earlier this season the situation was inflamed with Goodes’ famous war dance in the home game against Carlton.

Even Daniel Ricciardo steered his Red Bull to third in the Hungarian Grand Prix for his first podium finish of the season while Caroline Buchanan won silver at BMX world championships.

But reports this week that Goodes, 35, is reportedly considering early retirement after suffering extended abuse is not the way a champion like him should be thinking about the leaving the game.

Midfield slog

3 SPORTSBEAT // 30 JULY 2015 pursuing a home final. Port Adelaide, on the other hand, would just like to make the finals. It kept its chances alive with a tough victory over Essendon and one would expect it to maintain those hopes following Sunday’s meeting with St Kilda at Adelaide Oval. It’s a week-by-week proposition for the Power, which cannot look too far ahead. One positive at the moment for them is the improving form of recruit Patrick Ryder who is beginning to show what he was brought to the club for. But he can get better still by offering more around the ground. If fellow big man Matthew Lobbe can regain some belief in his game then the two can develop into the formidable ruck combination they were expected to.

delaide can prepare itself for a midfield slog on Saturday evening against Sydney.

Both rank highly in contested possession stats so it can set itself for a tightly fought clash, especially on the smaller confines of the SCG.

Talia’s replacement last week Sam Shaw will no doubt make way while Rory Atkins who has been the sub in his first two games for the club. Matthew Wright, who was subbed out again last week, could be sent back to the SANFL to play a full game and find some touch.

The Swans are the fourth best side for raking up contested possessions and while the Crows are sixth. They have the highest average of contested possessions per game.

Sydney may be without Adam Goodes who took a leave of absence during the week, missing training as the ‘booing’ storm intensified.

Adelaide has a good record on the SCG (11 wins and five losses), but to win this week it will need more runners on the outside to clear the ball from the countless scrimmages that are sure to occur.

Win this week and Adelaide could start

This is an area that it has struggled in this year with too many players over keen at getting in at the ball but no-one staying back to receive it and set up play. Interim Crows coach Scott Camporeale will be looking to Richard Douglas, David McKay, Brodie Smith and Riley Knight as well as possibly Jarryd Lyons and Mitch Grigg who both need to be given time to show what they can do at AFL level after shining in the local league. It also doesn’t require Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Thompson and Rory Sloane all attacking the ball at once. Camporeale has been trying to find the right mix, which is why we have seen similar types in Cameron Ellis-Yolmen and Matt Crouch dropped in recent weeks. Key defender Daniel Talia (virus) will be back to face Lance Franklin, who should return as well after also being a late withdrawal last week with a back complaint.

Footy footnotes Finals remain the focus of our two SA AFL sides but while the Crows’ destiny is in their own hands, the Power cannot afford any slip ups on the run home. • In relation to the booing of Adam Goodes, isn’t it time all players are shown more respect – putting them off when kicking for goal is a given and disputing an umpires call is all part of the game but booing a single player for whatever reason does need to stop • On the umpires, their theatrical semantics before making a decision is way over the top – they’re not auditioning for Broadway – although some would be better off at the Fringe • When did spraying water condone a 50m penalty? – some of the umpiring last week in all games was mind boggling • Should the AFL still be worried about crowd figures in Victoria after three games at Etihad Stadium together could not

Their hit-out work at the stoppages could then give their onballers first use of the ball and the run we have seen in Port Adelaide over the past few years can return as well. It just needs that starting point. Jasper Pittard (ankle) has been tested to evaluate his fitness for Sunday’s encounter but no-one from the Magpies side suggested they were ready for an AFL call-up while Alipate Carlile (back/hip) and Nathan Krakouer (hamstring) are probably one or two weeks off. Port Adelaide has a good recent record against St Kilda, winning its past three games. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN attract the numbers at the MCG on Friday night for one soccer match? • We never want to see the champions of the game out injured – it’s been a frustrating season for dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett jnr • Hooley dooley, what was Bachar thinking? – has it cost the Tigers a top-four spot? • Are the Eagles the only opponent which could undermine another Hawks premiership? • Interestingly though, sides that have finished the minor round with more than 165 percent, as Hawthorn should do, may have made that year’s grand final but they all lost on the day • Before last week’s matches, the AFL was close to announcing the timeslots for the Round 23 fixture but hopefully they are now rethinking their decision to give the Hawks another Friday night billing, considering it’s against Carlton again • In fact, the Blues have lost their rights to Friday night games next season, haven’t they?

AFL PREVIEW ROUND18

BY DION HAYMAN

HAWTHORN V RICHMOND

SYDNEY V ADELAIDE

Hawthorn averted a third straight loss against Richmond when they last met in round six last year at the MCG. The Hawks had most of the play but left the Tigers hanging in the game at half-time with a lead of 6.9 to 3.1. They straightened up in the second half though, firing on another 12.1 to 4.9 to race away to an 11-goal win, 18.10 (118) to 7.10 (52). Cyril Rioli finished with four goals – the only man on the ground to score more than two. The Tigers had surprisingly won their previous two games against the Hawks by 41 points at the MCG in 2013 and by 62 points at the same ground in 2012. After 44 games at the MCG, Hawthorn leads 26 wins to 18. Overall, the Tigers lead 83 wins to 69 after 152 meetings. Jason Dunstall booted 17 goals against Richmond at Waverley in 1992 to be the highest goal-scorer in this fixture.

Sydney has won its past three games against Adelaide with all three played in SA. The Swans won the second qualifying final of 2012 by 29 points at Football Park and won there again the following year by 77 points on a dark night for the Crows. They last met in round three last year at Adelaide Oval when the Swans won by 63 points with Luke Parker and Buddy Franklin both scoring four goals. The Swans won 21.8 (134) to 9.17 (71), finishing with 7.3 to 0.7 in an emphatic final term. Kurt Tippett has still never played against the Crows and will miss this game too as he recovers from a broken hand. Adelaide’s last win against the Swans was at the SCG in 2012 when it won by five points. Remarkably, the Crows have 11 wins from 16 games at the SCG where they have won their past four in a row. Sydney’s last home win against Adelaide was in 2004.

Geelong has won its past three games in a row against Brisbane and seven of its past eight. But the Lions have twice managed to upset the Cats during their decade of dominance. In 2009 at the Gabba, Brisbane won by 43 points and four years later, it won by five points at the same ground, after coming from 38 points down at the final change. The Lions also lost by just a point at Kardinia Park in 2013 in the final minor round game. However they have not won at the Cattery since 2003 when they scored a 14-point win, in what was then their fifth win in a row at the ground. Since then, they have come to grief on eight separate occasions. Their last visit to Geelong ended in a 62-point loss in the final round last season with Tom Hawkins scoring seven goals.

Carlton has won three of its past four and four of its past six games against North Melbourne, including the last two in a row. The Blues have even kicked identical scores of 16.13 (109) in both their last two games. In 2013, that only resulted in a one-point win while last year in round 18, they enjoyed a little more breathing space, winning by 23 points as North responded with 13.8 (86). Lachie Henderson booted a career high six goals while Jarrad Waite added four of his own against the team he would soon join. This will be Waite’s first outing against the side he played with 184 times. Lindsay Thomas kicked four goals when they last met and has more goals against Carlton than any other side having scored 29.9 in seven games against the Blues. The Kangaroos lead 10 wins to five at Docklands.

Collingwood and Melbourne meet twice in a season for the first time since 2010. That year, the sides were separated by just one point across two games with the second match, played on the Queen’s Birthday holiday, finishing in a draw. Since then, the Magpies have won all five clashes against the Demons and all played on the holiday Monday. The Magpies’ wins since 2011 have been by margins of 88, 42, 83, 33 and 25 points. In round 10, Collingwood opened with seven goals in the first term to lead by 24 points at quarter-time. Melbourne hit the front in the second term after two goals in three minutes from Jeff Garlett. The Pies steadied to lead by 14 points at the main break and went on to win 17.8 (110) to 13.7 (85). Travis Cloke scored seven goals without a miss while Jamie Elliott, Jarryd Blair and Demon Jeremy Howe finished with three.

West Coast has won all six encounters against Gold Coast. Their average winning margin is 51 points but the games have been varied ranging in margin from three points in 2014 to 126 points in 2012. This will be just the Eagles’ second journey to play the Suns on the Gold Coast. Their only previous trip saw them leave with a 52-point win in the final round last season when Josh Kennedy finished with 8.2. The Eagles led by just two points at half-time but ran rampant in the third quarter scoring 11.2 to 2.1. Their most recent meeting was in round seven earlier this season when the Eagles won by 92 points at Subiaco. Kennedy scored another four goals along with Elliot Yeo. The third quarter proved the killer again for the Suns has they conceded 12.0 to 1.4. The Eagles eventually won 21.9 (135) to 6.7 (43).

PORT ADELAIDE V ST KILDA

Sunday 12.40pm, Adelaide Oval

Port Adelaide has won its past three games against St Kilda, its best winning streak against the Saints since winning a club record nine straight wins from 2001-06. These sides are meeting just once in the season for the fifth year in a row. The Saints last beat Port in 2011 at Football Park by 56 points when Nick Riewoldt and Ryan Gamble both scored four goals. Since then, the Power has won by four points at Footy Park in the opening round of 2012, by five points at Docklands in 2013 and by 70 points last year at Adelaide Oval. Robbie Gray scored four goals as the Power won all four quarters, finishing with 19.15 (129) to 9.5 (59). Overall, the sides have met 25 times with Port leading 15 wins to 10. The Power leads nine wins to three in Adelaide with the Saints’ only other victories over Port here being in 1997 and 2009.

Essendon has won its past six games in a row against the Western Bulldogs – the Bombers’ best winning streak against the Bulldogs since they won 11 straight from 1963-69. The Bombers also took six wins and a draw in seven straight games from 2001-05. The Bulldogs last beat the Bombers at Docklands in 2010 when some sharp shooting guided them to a 29-point win, 17.5 (107) to 11.12 (78). They lost the next four straight by between five and 14 goals but were much more threatening in two defeats last season. The Bombers won by eight points in round seven after coming from 14 points behind at half-time and they won by seven points in round 18 after coming from 13 points down at three quarter-time. These Docklands co-tenants are meeting for the 24th straight time at their home ground. They last met at the MCG in 1999.

GWS meets Fremantle for the fourth time out of four at Subiaco. The west has never been a happy hunting ground for the fledgling Giants and all three previous trips have resulted in hefty defeats. In 2012, they lost by 95 points after a goalless first half. Matthew Pavlich finished with seven goals. In 2013, they lost by 113 points after a goalless first and third terms – the Dockers piled on 16.4 to 1.5 after half-time. Last year, the Dockers won by 76 points, despite the Giants’ most competitive showing in this fixture. Hayden Ballantyne scored five goals while three came from the boots of Pavlich and Nick Suban. Including games against the Eagles, the Giants are 0-5 at Subiaco. They are also 0-3 in Adelaide (0-1 at Adelaide Oval) and 0-3 at Homebush but they did recently win their first game in four attempts on the Gold Coast.

Last start winners who are both aiming to shape the finals in different ways. The Eagles’ versatility to adapt to a range of game styles will send a warning to opposition sides that they are a genuine flag chance. The Panthers maintained their gap in fifth spot, giving them a good opportunity for a second successive finals appearance. South’s overall record against the Eagles may be moderate, but it has won two of their past three encounters. The quick transition from defence to attack from the Eagles has been devastating at times and is very hard to shut down on the counter attack. This will be the major challenge for Panther mentor Brad Gotch to restrict. Six goals to Andrew Ainger and Michael Wundke combined will be food for thought for the South defence, but the key will be cutting down the supply to them. Overall, the edge looks to be with the home team.

North will rue some missed opportunities against Central that could have banked only its second win of the season, but coach Michael Handby will draw positives that his charges kept fighting it out. Inexperience from some younger players was crucial in the wash-up, but efforts like that will give more positivity with an eye to 2016. Glenelg gave itself a sniff of a big upset last week, but lacked another key forward to seriously threaten when the Eagles put the foot down. Winning the footy around the stoppages has been a positive for Glenelg this year, through the likes of Andrew Bradley and Matthew Snook. Handby will work his structures carefully to maximise the Roosters’ chances of closing down the Tigers’ space. This is one of the tougher games to pick, but North will not find a better chance to grab another win all season.

NORWOOD V ADELAIDE RESERVES

PORT MAGPIES V CENTRAL DISTRICT

Six weeks ago, this looked a lop-sided contest but on current form it will be close to match-of-the-round. Adelaide is surging lately, proving more than mere nuisance value. Its brutal dismissal of a West team that many consider a top-three chance was as clinical as it was ominous. Norwood played in fits and starts before failing by one point against South Adelaide, with small forwards Peter Persinos, Callum Bartlett and Josh Donohue combining for six of the 10 Redlegs’ goals. James Podsiadly has been a shining light at SANFL level since returning from injury. His versatility gives Adelaide a new dimension that may be a challenge for Norwood coach Ben Warren to shut down, but there are plenty of teammates who can also cause headaches. Matt Crouch’s response to his surprise axing was swift and if he gets close to another 33 touches (if not recalled to the AFL), then will throw a real defensive impetus onto the Norwood engine room. The Redlegs are getting their hands to the ball enough, but seem hesitant across half forward. Their stagnant movement allows the opposition to clog the forward 50, forcing them out wide. This may defy ladder positions, but Adelaide looks well placed to throw a further spanner into Norwood’s works.

The first of a number of virtual early finals in the season, as fifth hosts sixth. The Magpies never recovered from being jumped by Sturt last week, looking flat and listless throughout. With the AFL arm a mathematical chance of finals, it may weigh upon coach Garry Hocking’s options this week. Central did just enough to hold off a desperate North, but coach Roy Laird would remain frustrated at the lapses which would be punished by higher-placed teams. This is Port’s chance to almost cement a finals’ berth but it will find the Bulldogs a tough opponent, particularly with them knowing one more slip up would nearly shut the door on their chances. If Hocking has close to a full complement at his disposal, particularly around the midfield, then the Magpies’ advantage around the clearances and higher scoring average (around seven points higher a match) would give the home team the edge. Much of it, will come down to a reliable attack. After notching only six goals last week they will need a significant lift across the board. Central has proven at times that it can punish teams which underestimate it. All things considered though, the Magpies look a little safer.

Saturday 2.10pm, City Mazda Stadium Live stream www.sanfl.com.au

West’s resurgence hit a major snag last week. With only two players kicking multiple goals, it was always going to struggle to notch a winning score. Sturt was switched on from the opening bounce against Port and reaped the rewards. Despite sitting in third place, the Bloods are only half a game clear of South and this loom as a danger game. Last week emphasised the need to remain focused and accountable from the outset and West simply cannot afford to be slow starters against a team that has shown a few times this year that it can burst out early and hold a lead. Using run and carry to break the lines will be a major focus for Mickan in the team strategy meeting this week, as his side appeared stagnant at times last week. Sturt may not be able to make finals, but it can certainly play a major role in shaping them. However, West should just have enough in hand.

ustralian swimming star Cate Campbell will be chasing a rare feat when the swimming program begins this weekend at the world championships in Russia.

gold medal chance. He will be a part of a strong Australian squad that also includes Pan Pacs 200m champion Thomas Fraser-Holmes and fellow guns Cameron McEvoy and David McKeon will be hard to beat, with the Americans their usual main danger.

Campbell has the daunting task of defending her 100m freestyle event won in Barcelona in 2013. No one has been able to achieve back-toback success in the women’s world 100m freestyle gold either since East Germany’s Kornelia Ender in 1975 during their controversial doping regime.

“We’ve got some experienced guys and the general culture on the team is quite strong and focused on getting the performance we believe we deserve,” Hackett said.

Only three Australian women have defended a world title previously in the pool – Libby Trickett, Leisel Jones and Jessicah Schipper.

The 35 year-old hopes to provide a sign of things to come at his first world championships since 2007 after confirming that next year’s Rio Olympic are now firmly on the agenda.

She will take plenty of the Australian focus this week with several absentees from the championships including male sprint star James Magnussen who required a shoulder operation, Kylie Palmer who has been forced to sit out following a controversial drug suspension and young Brittany Elmslie who is recovering from surgery to remove a benign growth on her breast.

“A medal is a definite possibility.”

Swimming siblings Cate and Bronte Campbell will be vying for gold in the women’s freestyle events at this week’s world championships. Photo: APP Younger sister Bronte will once again be a major threat as will be Holland’s Femke Heemskerk, Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom and Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo.

Other well-known fancies for individual honours will be McEvoy, Bronte Barratt and Emily Seebohm while new stars could emerge like Daniel Smith, who is in line to swim the heats of the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Cate and Bronte will contest the 50m freestyle as well.

Last year’s Pan Pacs 100m champion McEvoy will be out to become the new sprint king, taking the mantle from Magnussen, when he faces hometown favourite Vladimir Morozov and Olympic gold medallist Nathan Adrian of the US.

“Not really,” she replied when asked whether she was feeling that added pressure.

Nevill takes over as Test keeper

rad Haddin’s international career is likely to be over, with Peter Nevill to stay behind the stumps for the third Ashes Test. Haddin missed the second Test due to family reasons and is now available, but selectors have opted to stick with Nevill after his impressive debut. It means Haddin, who turns 38 in October, is unlikely to feature in the five-Test series unless Nevill suffers an injury. There is no word on Haddin’s potential

retirement plans, but the keeper waited two months after the World Cup to announce his one-day career was over. He is expected to transition into coaching sometime soon and it could potentially be as early as this summer. Haddin has been Nevill’s mentor since the 29 year-old shifted from Melbourne to Sydney in 2008. If Haddin fails to get back on the park for Australia it would be among the more unfitting ends to any sportsperson’s career –

let alone a 66-Test veteran. Ian Healy, who kept for Australia in 99 Tests, termed Haddin’s shunning a “harsh call”. “I’d like him to have a chance to redeem his Cardiff performance,” Healy told Fox Sports. “Then maybe at the end of the series or when he doesn’t redeem himself - then we can move to Nevill.” BY ROB FORSAITH – AAP

Hawks face mini-final

W

ith its season on the line, Salisbury North faces a mini-elimination final on Saturday to remain a finals challenger.

The Hawks must beat fifth-placed Rostrevor OC to keep their finals hopes alive. A win at Campbelltown Oval will put them back inside the top five with four rounds to go. However, a loss will almost end their chance of advancing further at the close of the minor round, two wins in arrears of ROCs. So there is plenty up for grabs this week, ensuring a keenly fought contest. Rostrevor OC practically quashed Port District’s finals aspirations last week with a resounding 99-point victory. Securing its own finals’ berth will make it an intimidating opponent again this week. It would be a dangerous opposition come finals time if it did make it with the likes of Jack Nelligan, Heath Commane, Luke Manuel, William O’Malley and Ross Christie. Salisbury North kept itself in the running with a tense seven-point win over Adelaide University last week, but it will need to do more to overcome ROCs. Not relying on just Jamie Solly, Alex Stengle, Ricky Stoyanoff, Joe Hay and Steven Evans will start. Absent spearhead Josh Thurgood left Port District without a focal point last week and

if he is not back this week then finals are not an option. However, the Magpies play the three sides below them on the ladder in the run home and would probably need to win one other match as well as those and depend on Rostrevor OC and Salisbury North dropping at least two games over the remaining five weeks. Their first win should come against Sacred Heart OC on Saturday on the neutral ground of Adelaide Airport Stadium (Thebarton Oval). SHOC is still looking for a couple more victories themselves to avoid relegation and this clash may be seen as one of those opportunities. Other matches in round 14 will impact on the top three, with Henley hosting Tea Tree Gully, Goodwood Saints on the road to meet Portland and Adelaide University on its own survival mission against Payneham Norwood Union. Currently fourth, the Sharks have a few season-defining weeks to obtain the double chance and wouldn’t want to play an emerging Rostrevor OC in an elimination final, if that is how things pan out. Payneham Norwood Union’s return to the top tier has been excellent so far this season.

rince Alfred OC could be a beneficiary from the fight for fifth spot.

Both St Peters OC and Broadview have tough clashes against second and third-placed Modbury and Gaza respectively, but jagging favourable results are not beyond either. The Reds would certainly welcome seeing the Tigers get over the Eagles as it would allow them to jump into the top three, as long as they account for SMOSH West Lakes as would be expected.

be an enthralling contest. The other match in Division 2 this week looms as a one-sided affair with top playing bottom. Gepps Cross was unable to find its first victory of the season last week against the Cats and sadly it does not seem likely that it will not achieve one at all this season. A two-goal loss to Walkerville was heartbreaking for Daniel Mason, Jordan Charles and Jake Spriggs who rallied strongly with a final quarter burst before time ran out.

Then again if both SPOC and Broadview fail this week then Scotch OC could leap them both, with a win over lowly Walkerville.

It’s been a difficult year to say the least for the once strong Division 1 side, but the Rams will have to work their way back from Division 3 now.

The Hawks and Gaza will have their own agendas to fulfil on Saturday in securing the double chance for themselves.

Unley Mercedes Jets won’t be taking it lightly on Saturday either.

HOS Camden looks to be one win away from sewing up top place on the ladder with three rounds to play.

The Phantoms take on eighth-ranked Mitcham at Camden Oval, clear of second place by two wins and percentage. Last week PHOS proved too strong for second side Athelstone, winning away by 56 points with Aaron Bergsma, Nick Ramsey and Adam Scholz among the stars. Mitcham was no match for Golden Grove at home, falling by 74 points as Daniel Gregory, Simon Tucker and Michael Pitt played well. This should be a Phantoms’ victory by 66-82 points. Golden Grove and Old Ignatians should be a top contest. The fifth versus third match up will provide a handy prize for the winner, finals for Grove and a likely double chance for Old

Iggies. Nicholas Preston, Oliver Graham and Corey Pressler were among the best for the Kookaburras against Mitcham last week, while Old Iggies had the bye. The home ground can just be the edge for the Kookaburras by 10-24 points. Pembroke Old Scholars and Athelstone also looks line ball. The Kings, fourth, suffered a surprise 28-point loss to Flinders Park last week with Ben Williams, Eljay Connors and Sam Willis among the prime movers. Athelstone also had its worries when it fell to PHOS Camden by 56 points, Matthew Leigh, Daniel Sullivan and Josh Schinella leading the way. Athelstone won a thriller by four points when the sides met in May. The Kings can return the favour by 8-14 points. Seaton Ramblers and Flinders Park won’t

play finals but both enjoyed surprise wins last week. The Rams edged out Plympton by a point away to win its first game of the season with Aaron Cartwright, Darren Tremaine and Shane Harris leading the charge. Flinders Park recorded one of its best wins of the season to beat Pembroke Old Scholars by 28 points with Brett O’Hara, Daniel Blythe and Matt Green among the stars. The Reds can win their sixth game to keep their tiny finals’ hopes alive. Plympton has the bye. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

Bulls ready to charge Hounds P

ooraka’s slim hopes of making the finals can stay alive when it hosts Hectorville this week. Pooraka, seventh with six wins, lost to Eastern Park by 10 points last week with Dale Armstrong, Dean Pead and Brady Tidswell playing well. Hectorville found scoring tough against Salisbury with just 2.9 in its 49-point loss. Best last week for the Hounds were Paul Wootton, Daniel Sauerwald and Owen Giovine. The Bulls to get home by 36-50 points. Eastern Park and North Haven should be one of the best matches of the season at Dwight Reserve. The Demons, third, edged out Pooraka last week by 10 points with Chris Knapp, Alex Tuckwell and Geoff Tume among the key players. North Haven had to battle for three quarters before clearing away from Glenunga last week to win by 63

points at home. Ryan Adams, Rory Duerden and Cohen Mattner stood tall. Tough to call but North Haven may be over its mini slump, 14-25 points. Westminster Old Scholars and Kenilworth should provide a keen contest at Glandore Oval. The Dragons, fifth, lost to Kilburn by 25 points last week with Frazer Goodes, Cody Boylan and Matthew Reid leading the way. Kenilworth lost to Hope Valley by 22 points to keep it in relegation territory. Blake Moser, Daniel Delawyer and Aaron Crolla played well. The Dragons to hold fifth for another week by 32-46 points. Hope Valley faces a tough contract against second team at Salisbury Oval. The Demons saw good games from Anthony Ianniello, Devin Payne and Jamie Dowling in their 22-point win against Kenilworth.

Salisbury kicked 10.10 to Hectorville’s 2.9 last week with Ryan Paget, Matthew Fleming and Geoff Tume starring. The Magpies will be too strong again by 40-54 points. Bottom side Glenunga has improved in recent weeks but will struggle against fourth team Kilburn this week. The Rams pushed North Haven at times, losing by 63 points last week with Mark Roberts, Sam Abell and Troy Cavenett leading the way. Kilburn beat Westminster Old Scholars by 25 points with Alex Brackstone, Scott Galbraith and Mark McCallum in fine touch. The Chics should win by 50-66 points to keep pace with the top three. Kilburn’s recovery from looking likely to fold last year, to now be sitting fourth on the ladder, has been outstanding. BY GORDON ARMSTRONG

It’s all on the line I

t’s going to be an intriguing finish to the minor round with places still be to be confirmed from top-five positions right down to ninth and which side will be relegated. The only one that won’t change is Woodville South sitting at the bottom of the ladder. Most other spots will come down to the last weekend of the regular season. Things can be set up though on Saturday with all encounters having implications on the final make-up of the ladder. The most telling could be that between Para Hills and Elizabeth with the Big Reds looking to settle themselves in the top three and the Eagles still hoping to have an impact in the finals. Para Hills could rue the slip-up last week, dropping a game it would have

anticipated winning to practically seal the double chance. However, Adelaide Lutheran had its own ideas of fighting for survival. Elizabeth stepped up its charge to a possible finals berth with a persuasive 109-point thrashing of the Cats.

especially following last week’s disappointing 47-point loss to the top side. CBCOC can remain in reach of the top three by beating Greenacres. This won’t be an easy encounter after the Dragons didn’t allow Colonel Light Gardens to dictate proceedings last week. Avoiding relegation will ensure the Bulldogs continue to fight, but the Lions may present a tougher challenge this week for another upset to occur.

Adam Northcott and Jordan Stewart will want to bring that game to this week’s clash to stay in top-five calculations.

Pulteney faces a just-as-gruelling match against ladder leader Blackfriars OS.

All current top-five outfits face sides lower than them on Saturday but cannot expect that guarantees victory.

BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

Rosewater, the most vulnerable in the five at the moment, doesn’t really need a percentage hike to remain there as it experienced a drawn game earlier in the year. But confidence-wise a big win over Woodville South would go a long way,

ittle separates Brahma Lodge and Mawson Lakes on the ladder as they battle at Brahma Lodge Oval. Brahma Lodge had the bye last week and before that lost to Fitzroy by 33 points. Mawson Lakes last week accounted for Ingle Farm by 30 points with Matthew Gladman leading the way. Both sides are unlikely to make finals but bragging rights could still make this a tight game with the Tigers at home by 14-28 points.

was no match for Smithfield last week, falling by 86 points with Jake Ephgrave, Adrian Cortvriend and James Bain in the best players. Fitzroy has had an up and down season, last week falling to top side Lockleys by 64 points after trailing by three points at half time. Matthew Nelson, Dominic Papazoglov and Patrick Skeer were handy for the Lions. Central is right in this match at home but the Lions should get up by 12-28 points.

West Croydon and Smithfield should be a top contest in the third versus second match up at Fawk Reserve. The Hawks crushed Trinity Old Scholars by 84 points last week with Daniel Soppitt, Michael Francis and Tyson Goodes leading the way. Smithfield is answering most challenges put before it, last week beating Central United by 86 points. Daniel Cook, Matthew Stewart and Daniel Marston led a long list of top contributors. Tempting to go for the home side but the Salisbury Magpies look good again by 20-37 points.

ngle Vale kept its finals ambition alive by beating third-placed St Pauls OS last week.

In an interesting turn of events though, the Owls will face Salisbury West twice and fifthplaced Mitchell Park meets Flinders University twice over the last three weeks of the minor round in Division7. The Tigers will be tricky opponents who can pose a threat on their day, but with the Lions almost assured of defeating the Crabs, they are games Angle Vale must win to have any chance of seeing finals actions. That will leave an imposing encounter against Houghton Districts away next week as a decider to the Owls top-four aspirations while also requiring Mitchell Park to drop its clash against St Pauls OS. It was a firm 31-point victory over the Saints, of which Adam Cummings, Scott Burgess and Michael Gollan can take many positives for the tougher battle ahead. They may need the ladder leader to rest a few players too before the finals to realise their

dream but funnier things have happened. The Raiders host St Pauls OS on Saturday and the Saints will be looking for a boost to show that they still have premiership prospects as another loss could dent their belief factor. Cameron Schutz, Jai McMurtrie and Ben Birtles stand in the Saints way though, after holding Salisbury West to just two goals in their side’s compelling 66-point victory last week as they finalise their own finals preparations. Adelaide University is still considered the best hope at upsetting the Raiders’ flag run. The Blacks will be fresh, having two byes in their lead-up to the finals, which could prove favourable or detrimental. BY STEPHEN O’LOUGHLIN

15 SPORTSBEAT // 30 JULY 2015

Returning to the circuit where he produced his first V8 Supercars win, with Dick Johnson Racing in 2013, Mostert is certain his Ford and his driving style with suit the Queensland Raceway again. He is determined to get back on the top step of the podium after fishing eighth and sixth at Townsville last round, traditionally not the best place for the Prodrive Falcons, but did see two wins for teammate Mark Winterbottom. “Definitely Ipswich is going to be a ‘strength track’,” Mostert said. “If we don’t have a result there we will be underperforming. “So looking forward to going to a track that is going to suit us and suits me personally, and we’ll try to get a result.” The 23 year-old has managed five race wins since his maiden success, including two victories this season, and is fifth in the Championship, 282 points behind Winterbottom. A top-five finish is his goal for the year after ending 2014 in seventh. Mostert has fond memories of Ipswich and hopes to earn

more points this weekend. “I had the first race win there which was pretty special and then a couple of thirds last year when we weren’t quite as strong with the car – obviously looking forward to getting the FG X there, the car has been really adaptable to change at the moment,” he said. Winterbottom will need to turn his fortunes around in Ipswich, as he did in Townsville last round.

All five manufacturers will be represented in the Asian city, with Craig Lowndes (Holden), Will Davison (Erebus), Todd Kelly (Nissan) and Scott McLaughlin (Volvo) also heading overseas.
