The Challenger program is open to children with any disability. Thanks to the help of coaches, assistant coaches and “buddies”, all our players get to hit, field and get around the bases. Challenger is a non-competitive environment with the goal of all our players getting a chance to be part of a team sport and having a great time. Thanks to private sponsors our program is no cost to the families involved. We provide uniforms, equipment, pictures, trophies, a day at a Marlin’s game, a weekend in Ft Myers playing other Challenger teams, a year end picnic for all the families and more. Again, all these activities are provided at no charge. Although our target age group is 5–22 years old, many of our players are older as they have been in our program since the early years. Therefore, we now have a junior division from 5/12 years old and a senior division of 13+. Our games are Sunday afternoons at 3:30pm – 5:15pm from March- May. We play at fields throughout Broward County, so our players have home and away games. We presently play at fields in Coral Springs, Margate, Tamarac, Sunrise, Weston and Pembroke Pines. New players are always welcome. Challenger is also always looking for new sponsors and people interested in helping to run our program. Challenger is an all-volunteer organization and 100% of donated money goes directly to the program. REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN! Contact Randy Hibshman (954) 345-9329. Email: rhibshman@bellsouth.net. Whoa. It has been a long year of change. Let us start by all taking in a deep breath (mask is recommended). Now exhale.

I realize how real (and possibly painful) the events of 2020 were for all of us. However, I am optimistic by nature. As such I am looking forward to a school year that resembles past expectations. Support, enrichment and socialization for our children. To say the world has changed is an understatement. I encourage those I work with to focus less on global events and more on yourself and your family. My aim for this article is to offer some direction as school starts for what will unmistakably be a year of change.

Respect. Simply put, there are many opinions that circulate through the residents of South Florida. If New York was known as the melting pot by previous generations, South Florida seems to meet that description today. As a psychologist I have learned to straddle the fence. I clearly have my own opinion, however I would be less than effective if I was not able to understand the opinions of my patients. A central tenet in parenting should be to be respectful of others. Not just elders and teachers but of our children’s peers and their families, most notably when their views dissent from ours. This year, during this climate, is the perfect time to teach this lesson and live by example.

Emotional Impact. This area will be the most difficult to measure as well as the most important to rectify. The social isolation that occurred while we were learning how to and then protecting our families from the pandemic will be dissected for years. How do you identify damage done by increased technology use, decreased education and halted socialization on children? The answers will be studied and debated. For now keep an eye on your children and recreate normal activity. If they seem sad, withdrawn, angry, distracted or show behavior that is concerning in any way, start by

A YEAR OF CHANGE By Dr. David Yudell, Licensed Psychologist consulting with your pediatrician. They can guide you through what can be expected versus what could be a sign of the need for psychological help. Loss and Catch Up. We will be seeing the impact of COVID on education and socialization for some time. You can take solace in knowing that it was a global pandemic but that only helps with accepting the loss. The goal now should be to regroup and refocus. Use the start of this year as a way to get your child to focus on several aspects of school that will make him or her successful. From note taking, to using a schedule or dry erase board to plan for assignments and tests, to reaching out to teachers and other students for collaboration. Use this as an opportunity to teach them the skill of asking for help. Get them involved in sports and enriching activities that they missed out on. There are ways to measure their abilities through either their school or through trained psychologists. The first part of the school year is a perfect time for assessment of their abilities. Get involved in their academics and get to know your child as they navigate through this year. The best step to take at this point is to observe (how they are dealing with their academics, social and emotional functioning), intervene (provide support and help to the best of your ability) and ask for help (teachers, tutors, appropriate health care professionals) when you are concerned or unsure of the next step. Be optimistic about school, model the behaviors you want from your children, and work hard to support them throughout the year.
