EGYPTIAN GOLF FEDERATION ISSA ABOU EL ELA WINS THE INAUGURAL GOLF CITY JUNIOR OPEN THIRTY-one juniors from six different clubs contested the first ever Golf City Junior Open recently. As Event 2 in this season’s series of EGF Junior Opens the young golfers competed in 5 age categories with the scores from categories 1 and 2 counting towards the 2010-11 EGF Junior Orders of Merit. The race to become the inaugural Golf City Junior Open Champion proved to be very close with Issa Abou El Ela of Alexandria winning by a single shot from Hassan Said of Katameya Heights. Ela’s round of 75 also saw him take the 18 and under gross prize while Said’s 76 ensured he won the 15 and under gross award.
In the net divisions Golf City’s Ahmed Nagi won the 18 and under net prize on countback from Ibrahim Wakid of Katameya Heights while the 15 and under net prize was won by Maged Abdel Tawab of Dreamland. The 12 and over category played 9 holes from the ladies tees and Kenzy Hafez (52) and Youssef Abaddi (47) won the girls and boys prizes respectively. Noemi Roos (46) from Dreamland and Anas Amin (44) from Alexandria took the top awards in the 11 and under category while Donia Schultz (42) and Omar Moselhy (48) were the winners in the 9 and under category.
TRICK SHOT DISPLAY WOWS PRO-AM PLAYERS FORMER European Tour pro David Edwards entertained the Pro-am players at the Egyptian Open with an outrageous demonstration of trick shots and comedy on the driving range at the JW Marriott, Mirage City Golf Club. Regarded as the best trick show entertainer in the world, Edwards currently holds the world record for his famous Scissor Hands shots – 310 balls in just three minutes – which was one of many stunts that proved popular with both the pros and the amateurs. Edwards showed off his talents with a variety of unusual golf clubs including a double headed iron, a club with the head of a hammer, extra long drivers and clubs with rubber shafts. It was a show that kept the crowd entertained and amused providing a fitting start to Cairo’s first full appearance on the European Challenge Tour calendar.
MIRAGE CITY’S HYE SOOK LIM WINS THE KATAMEYA LADIES OPEN WITH impressive rounds of 74 and 79 for a 153 total, Hye Sook Lim secured a convincing victory in the Katameya Ladies Open, the first event on the ladies EGF Order of Merit. On home soil Sophie Issa managed runner-up spot, with a 36-hole total of 168. With Sabine Repond winning the overall Net prize, Mi Hee You took the third gross on 178. Repond won the net with a 36-hole total of 146, Kathy Leuders took runner-up Net on 150 and Sharon Eckstrom took third on 155.
KATAMEYA WINS THE FIRST ROUND OF EGF LADIES INTERCLUB KATAMEYA ladies, guided by Captain Nadia Ziwar, won round 1 of the EGF Ladies Golf Interclub Match that took place at Katameya Heights Golf & Tennis Resort last month. With 132 Stableford points total from their best four scores, they secured a three-point victory over second placed Mirage Ladies with 129 Stableford points. Third place went to Dreamland with 116 points. The win for Katameya secured them 10 league points, Mirage eight points and Dreamland six points. The second round of Ladies Interclub Match will be at Dreamland December 8.
FLORIAN LEADS SODIC TEAM TO PRO-AM TITLE SWEDISH pro Oscar Floren led his amateur partners Mike Kidd, Adel Saluma and Evaldo Roos to victory in the pre-event Pro-am staged at JW Marriott, Mirage City Golf Club. The SODIC fourball took the title by way of a countback from Rory McIlroy’s Global Brands team of Michael Collins, Hassan Said and Abdulaziz Said. One shot adrift and taking third place also on a countback in the Pro-Am backed by Titleist and Ecco was the Dockland team of Ismail Saif El Nasr, Ahmed Awn, Bassem Youssef and pro Daniel Gaunt.
