Cape Racing has announced establishmenttheof a new ThoroughV bred Sales Division to conduct bloodstock auctions in the Western Cape. All profits earned by this division will be channelled into stakes and will contribute alongside Cape Racing’s other initiatives aimed at ensuring the longevity and sustainability of racing in the province. Greg Bortz, the Executive Chairman Elect of Cape Racing, stated: “Establishing a Thoroughbred Sales Division is a logical extension of our brand. Furthermore, the entire focus for us is on creating revenue streams that stay within racing and are used for the benefit and growth of racing. The majority of the country’s breeders are based in the Cape, so I am sure they will be thrilled to see the proceeds of sales conducted in our province be returned into the local stakes pot. We are also excited to welcome all the breeders from around the country to come and participate in our sales events – if racing wins, we all win, and we are all on the same team here!“

Justin Vermaak, Cape Racing Head of Racing Operations, added: “The Western Cape seems the logical region to host auction sales as (i) the majority of horses on offer do not have to travel vast distances to get to the sales; (ii) it is located in the appropriate area from a quarantine perspective; (iii) it is frequented by high-profile local and international buyers; and (iv) can be staged to coincide with the major feature races in the Mother City as well as the other top social events in and around the city. We look forward to adding to the national sales calendar and hopefully contributing to positively uplifting our fantastic breeding industry.”

CAPE RACING STEP INTO SALES ARENA

In a media release published early on Tuesday, Chairman Chris Van Niekerk explained: “CTS was formed eleven years ago, with the aim of adding value to the South African thoroughbred racing landscape. The intended objective was achieved through the many successful sales that followed, as well as the establishment of the Cape Premier Sale in the Mother City convention centre, not only as a unique event, but as an auction on the international thoroughbred sales map. I believe that the decision by Cape Racing to form its own sales division is a positive development for racing. It is in this light, combined with our love for the game, that Bernard and I deem it appropriate to step aside at this time. Every action with the aim of creating a more viable future for our industry must be supported. I have the highest level of appreciation and gratitude for our small

Added Managing Director Grant Knowles: “While there is obviously sadness to say goodbye to CTS, all racing lovers in the Cape, and probably nationwide, cannot help but be swept up in the wave of excitement and optimism that is Cape Racing today. I have no doubt that Greg Bortz and his team will show the same innovation and energy to the building of a sales company, as they have already demonstrated in other areas of the business.”

Details regarding the status of CTS’s already scheduled upcoming sales and sales races will be communicated in the days ahead. Discussions with Cape Racing have been held to ensure that the current sales and racing calendar is not negatively •impacted.CTSmedia release – 6 September 2022

Cape Racing’s recently establishment new Thoroughbred Sales Division has announced that it will be hosting a Ready to Run sale at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on October 29, 2022. With Cape Thoroughbred Sales (“CTS”) announcing their intention to step away from thoroughbred sales, Cape Racing has decided to hold its own Ready to Run sale on the same date and at the same venue as the previously scheduled CTS Similarly, sale. Cape Racing will be holding its inaugural Premier Yearling Sale powered by Tattersalls at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 12 January 2023. This coincides with the same venue and date of CTS’s previously scheduled previously yearling sale. Future sales dates and venues for the full 2023 and 2024 calendars will be determined in due course.

Cape Racing’s Executive Chairman Elect Greg Bortz commented: “Our sales company will be working hard developing an innovative sales calendar for the years ahead, coupled with sales races and events that fit hand in glove with our enhanced fixture schedule and other exciting initiatives. We believe that the trifecta of our beautiful city, outstanding racecourses and fantastic horses will make the Cape an equine destination for international and local buyers and racegoers alike. We intend to do things a little differently. We are hopeful that all our country’s breeders will really be supportive given that 100% of all profits earned from any sales will be invested into stakes. This will raise the profile of the industry, attract more buyers, and benefit our breeders even further. There will be no leakage of profits out of the industry, which is the core rationale behind our entering the sales arena to begin with.”

Cape Racing has also agreed to hold and fund the sales races previously announced by CTS. These include the upcoming Ready to Run race to be held at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday October 30th for a stake of R600,000, the Gold Rush 1 race for a stake of R7,5 million to be held on World Sports Betting Met Day in January 2023, and will continue with Gold Rush 2 in 2024.

After a whirlwind first six weeks of major change and a variety of exciting innovations in his position as Head of Racing Operations in the Western Cape, Justin Vermaak was looking forward to the first racemeeting in the Hollywoodbets Spring Country Series today. One of the most scenic racetracks in South Africa, appropriately labelled ‘the Country Course’, Hollywoodbets Durbanville hosts the opening meet of the eight programme series that runs from 7 September to 19 October. This wonderful time of the year in the fairest Cape is highlighted by the running of the traditional Cape summer season launch-pads of the Hollywoodbets Gr3 Matchem Stakes and Gr3 Diana Stakes on Saturday, 1 October. Amongst initiatives that include the introduction of a R1000 per race winner incentive for the Grooms, and distinctive barrier draw

field sizes, with its ancillary benefits and spin-offs, and we are thrilled with the response, with the proof of the first pudding in the fields for Wednesday,” an enthusiastic Vermaak told the Sporting Post. “The average field size is around 40% up on the June/July average, and that was at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth! We are very pleased as having to do eliminations is not something we’d expect at an early Spring meeting at Hollywoodbets Durbanville,” added the man who has presided over the period of the greatest change in double quick time seen in any South African racing jurisdiction in recent memory. Justin Vermaak confirmed that the R2500 RaceCape appearance fee was split into a R2000 ‘rebate’ to the owner, and a R500 ‘saddling fee’ to the trainer. “Against the background of our substantial stakes increases, this incentive, coupled amongst other benefits with free stable rental and a travel subsidy for visitors – and an extra R1000 for the visiting owner – means that we have been flooded with enquiries from all over the country.” This appearance fee is not payable to the winner and placedlast horse in each race.

“While the specifics have been published in the programme and the brochure, it must also be noted, for example, that maidens with a merit rating lower than 50 will not qualify for the appearance fee after their sixth start. Those maidens with a merit rating of 50 and above will, however, qualify for the appearance fee,

14 irrespective of starts.”

“We have undertaken a review of the 2yo racing roster for example, and tailored it with a cash injection. There is not much time to get the juveniles ready as the first annual 900m dashes for both colts and fillies is at the end of November. These races will lead up to two newly created juvenile events on Guineas Day which is being run on 17 December. The Commonwealth Cup will be run at juvenile plate conditions for colts and geldings while the Summer Coronation will be run for the fillies. These two races will carry a prize of R200 000 each. And probably the most exciting news is the formation of a 3 leg Summer Juvenile Series, which has R1 600 000 on offer - a vast increase from the R525 000 for the three races last season!” The Cape programme for the period to end February, including all festival meetings, will be published later this week. All enquiries may be directed to Justin Vermaak on email- justin@ caperacing.co.za.

“We will cover 50% of the transport cost for any horse that competes in two races during this period, 75% for any horse that competes in a Listed, Gr3 or Gr2 event, and 100% for any horse that competes in a Gr1 race. These percentages are not cumulative and the highest qualification level will apply. Trainers and owners must kindly note that the transport must be booked through Cape Racing and travel is on one of our authorised floats. The earlier trainers talk to us, the better we can coordinate suitable dates of travel, with maximised horses booked per float,” he explained. Asked about the funding for the Racecape Incentive Scheme Vermaak said that the finance has included a major cash sponsorship from new local racecourse brand sponsor, Hollywoodbets, to assist in “Thefunding.operator will also be contributing in terms of a 5% deduction from the stakes pot which goes directly to the Racecape Incentive Scheme. Going forward, stakeholders will note in the stakes breakdown of each race, that 5% has been deducted from the gross prize, to be placed directly into the scheme, with the other 95% being split proportionately amongst the placed horses.” Separate to the RaceCape initiative, Cape Racing have increased the stakes pot by 35% as advertised, meaning a cash injection of more than R20 million.

An enormous incentive is the R10 000 each for the owner and trainer of any visiting winner at any Cape meeting in the summer season, which runs from 1 November to 28 February. This bonus jumps to R50 000 each for the owner and trainer of any visiting winner at one of the nine Summer Festival meetings. In terms of visitor transport, Vermaak indicated that Cape Racing will be subsidising costs at various levels, dependant on the actual races that the traveller participates in from 1 November to 28 February.

TOO EXPENSIVE!

News Live

The price of the African Horse Sickness vaccine is compromising the effectiveness of animal health management and increasing the risk of a severe outbreak which could destroy industries, including horseracing, upon which many people depend for their livelihoods. This was the message from a variety of trainers and breeders, who have told the Sporting Post that it is time for action and for putting a stop to what amounts to a monopolistic Aextortion.petition is being prepared, whereafter representation will be made to appropriate Government and other bodies to effect change. Please click here to support the petition. The petition is being organised by Saai, an entity that protects the rights and interests of family farmers, which includes horse owners. The price of the current registered vaccine with Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), the sole supplier, is significantly higher than previous years, at about R430 per dose and does not include syringes and needles, as in previous Usersyears. have been informed

Trainer Leon Lotz, a farmer and racehorse breeder and trainer, stressed that the issue was not with the National Horseracing Authority, but that the only vaccine currently registered in terms of the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act 1947 (Act no 36 of 47) for AHS is the live virus vaccine produced by Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP). “We are sitting on a ticking time-bomb, and it’s vital that we all stand as one,” added the Middleburg-based Lotz, who said that the cost of vaccinating horses did not end with the vaccine price. "There are professional costs, including travel and it's an alarmingly expensive exercise," he Aconcluded.Capebreeder said that their small operation cost them The'thousands'.patentfor the formula of the vaccine has long expired and it may be reproduced, but the current limited market may not support the commercial reproduction of the vaccine by other manufacturers. Another option may be to register an overseas product for import . The petition says that as the only registered vaccineproducer OBP is a dominant firm in terms of section 7 of the Competition Act 89 of 1998, and in terms of section 8 of the act, it is prohibited for a dominant firm to charge an excessive price to the detriment of consumers or customers.

RIDGEMONT'S&TEAMOFEXCELLENCE

Prince Of Kahal (2019 when it was a Gr3) and Vaseem (2021) were the previous Magner winners, and Team Gold stamped himself as a fellow to side with this season. Not quite there with the best as a 3yo, he started at 8-1 and turned on the jets alate down the outside on Saturday under replacement rider JP van der Merwe to record his first stakes success, beating the lightning-fast Sheela (33-10) by 0,30 lengths in a time of 70,65 secs.

Val D’Orcia (2-1) was not disgraced, a further 1,70 lengths back in third. Last year’s winner Vaseem was well beaten in fourth. Now a winner of 4 races with 9 Topbet's Kevin Pillay and owner Tyrone Barnard with the Spring Spree trophy - Team Gold!

Former Zim veteran Roy Magner bought a maiden years ago for R1000-00. He went on to win 22 races including 3 Thomas Meikles, 2 Queen Elizabeth Cups, the Castle Tankard and 10 other group races. But while that's modern history in the scheme of the top horseman's career, the man with the midas touch produced the goods again at Turffontein on Saturday, when the smart 4yo Team Gold bounced back from a short rest to win the Topbet Listed Spring Spree Stakes and give Mr. Magner his third winner in four renewals of the early Highveld Spring season feature.

27 places from 17 starts, Team Gold has banked R460 000. He cost R140 000 on the National 2yo Sale. Bred by Highlands,Ridgemontheisason of Twice Over (Observatory) out of the four-time winning Kingmambo mare, Kelly’s Olympics. Team Gold is raced by young owner Tyrone Barnard, who was on course to lead his first feature winner in. Topbet has come on board as sponsors of the Topbet Spring Challenge this year and kicked off their partnership with 4Racing on Saturday. Topbet will sponsor two features on 1 October, both prominent in the calendar as they are two Gr2 events and form an excellent lead up into future races during the season, culminating in some of the runners aiming for Summer Cup glory. The R400 000 Topbet Spring Challenge and the R300 000 Topbet Spring Fillies and Mare Challenge are both Grade 2 events at weight for age with penalties.

BILLY THE KID

Lady’s Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday. A man who has been in the game for nearly 50 years, Billy ‘The Kid’ Ruiters originally dreamt of being a jockey but was denied due to limited opportunity in the early years. He took out his licence in early 2021 after Chris Erasmus moved to KZN and is clearly growing in stature. Drama at the start saw the withdrawal of the reluctant Midnight Gem, while Paul Peter’s new charge Maryah failed to jump once the gates were sprung. Jockey Ryan Munger, riding with confidence after his Fairview Friday double, did JC Photos Miss Daisy is led in by a very proud team!

30 pace work as he took full advantage of the 3yo’s 9kg pull at the weights to win well in a time of 70,99 secs. Miss Daisy (8’s to 5-2) kept on powerfully to beat former Cape-based stakes performer Mercury Rising (28-10) by 2,20 lengths, with Bon Vivant (4-1) looking dangerous late and a further quarter length back in third. A thrilled owner Stincky Pooe was on course and said he’d like to ‘keep Munger in the family’ as he congratulated the Ruiters’ team. Ruiters, who has just taken delivery of the winner’s full brother from Bush Hill Stud, said that he hoped that the win would ‘open doors’ for his yard. A R40 000 National 2yo Sale graduate, Miss Daisy was bred by Bush Hill Stud from Mr Greeley stallion Crusade out of the Count Dubois mare, Heliantha. Now a winner of 3 races with 4 places from 9 starts for stakes of R273 750, Miss Daisy looks set to go on to better things.

While Gavin Smith and Duncan ‘Rooster’ McKenzie grabbed a double apiece at Fairview on Friday, it was the brand-new Richard FourieAlan Greeff combination that kicked into top gear with a treble, that included the Flower Alley mare Santa Therese, who won the R150 000 Listed Jockey Club Stakes for the second year running. Proud Mum Tara Laing also deserves a mention, after saddling her son Ewan Garratt, probably South Africa’s youngest owner’s first winner, when the recently relocated Chroniclesofnania – on lease from the Andrews family of Sorrento Stud- registered her maiden success. Well done to ButEwan!itwas the top-class Santa Therese (18-10) who owned the day, when recording her tenth career victory, as she charged through late under Richard Fourie, to win the feature in a time of 130,09 secs. Having won the same race a year ago when relocated to the polytrack, the strapping chestnut simply carried too many guns under Winning Form jockey, Richard Fourie. She stayed on well to beat the 40-1 longshot First Street by 0,75 lengths, with Cape challenger Flower Of Saigon (7-2) a further quarter length back in third. After leading the pack, Integrity (17-2) faded

The latter, who won twice over 1400m, is out of the useful racemare Los Angeles - a Joey Ramsden-trained daughter of West Man who won three and who finished second in the (then) Gr2 Thekwini Fillies Stakes. Further back, this is the family of legendary South African champion Horse Chestnut and current smart performers African Adventure and Pamushana’s Pride. The next Fairview racemeeting is on 9 September, when the Speedsters Stakes heads the turf programme. Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young sire Fire Away received some impressive updates to his pedigree on Saturday. Under Paco Lopez, Vigilantes Way came with a late rattle to capture Saturday’s 1700m contest by half a length, while taking her tally of wins to seven from 19 starts. “She’s a little machine,” said con ditioner Shug McGaughey.”She’s fun to train. SANTA THERESE

THE TIGER

There have been few, if any, better bred stallions to retire to stud in South Africa than the late Tiger Ridge. A son of legendary sire Storm Cat and US Broodmare Of The Year Weekend Surprise, Tiger Ridge was a three-parts brother to Gr1 Preakness Stakes winner, and successful sire Summer Squall (sired, like Storm Cat, by Storm Bird) and halfbrother to US Horse Of The Year, and multiple champion sire, A.P. Indy.

Tiger Ridge: by Storm Cat ex Weekend Surprise

35

Both Summer Squall and A.P. Indy became hugely successful broodmare sires -to date, Summer Squall mares have bred the likes of US champions Stevie Wonderboy and Summer Bird, while the late A.P.Indy is damsire of over 250 stakes winners.

Tiger Ridge, whose North American crops yielded the likes of US millionaire Leah's Secret and Windsor Castle Stakes hero Strike The Tiger, left his mark in South Africa with eight crops. His notable South African flagbearers were headed by Equus Champions Cherry On The Top and Nother Russia, shortlived Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Noah From Goa, Gr1 Summer Cup winner Wagner and Gr2 winning millionaires Kavanagh and Trophy Wife. Other graded stakes winners sired by Tiger Ridge in South Africa included Isphan, Maybe Yes and Tiger's Retreat. Not surprisingly, given his own pedigree and the quality of mare he covered, Tiger Ridge is making his presence felt as a broodmare sire.ROARS!

The late son of Storm Cat ended the 2021-2022 racing season 11th on South Africa's Leading Broodmare Sires List, with the progeny of Tiger Ridge mares earning more than R5 000 000 and claiming six black type races in South Africa last Tigerseason.Ridge's influence as a broodmare sire was also felt at Fairview on Friday, when his maternal granddaughter Santa Therese (Flower Alley) captured the Listed Jockey Club Stakes. Out of the Tiger Ridge mare Santa Clarita, Santa Therese has now won four black type races, with the mare having also captured the Jockey Club Stakes in 2021. Santa Therese was one of five black type winners produced by Tiger Ridge mares last season, with others including Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Epsom Girl (Pomodoro), In Full Flight Handicap/Marshalls World Of Sport Umngeni Handicap hero Isivunguvungu (What A Winter), the aforementioned Santa Therese, Gr2 4Racing SA Fillies Nursery winner Maharanee (Flower Alley) and Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes winner Sprinkles (Elusive Fort).

Perhaps tellingly, Tiger Ridge was inbred to US Triple Crown winner Secretariat (an outstanding broodmare sire), while his granddam Lassie Dear was a daughter of Buckpasser, an even greater broodmare sire.

Tiger Ridge is also broodmare sire of South African G1 winners Orchid Island (SA Fillies Classic) and Pearl Of Asia (Mercury Sprint), while his North American daughter Leah's Secret produced G3 Westchester Stakes winner Nicodemus (Candy TigerRide). Ridge, who spent his South African stud career at Wilgerbosdrift, is also maternal grandsire of Driving Miss Daisy (Master Of My Fate) -runner up in all of the Gr1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas, Gr1 Cartier Paddock Stakes and Gr1 Woolavington 2000, while the smart Marigold Hotel (Querari), a half-sister to Maharanee, is out of the Tiger Ridge mare Indira. His brilliant daughter Cherry On The Top, while yet to produce anything approaching her own merit, is dam of Gr1 SA Fillies Classic third Blossom (Silvano) and the smart Seventh Gear (Captain Al).

"The horses simply ran out of their skins," commented the likeable trainer before adding, "I had six runners on the night for four wins, a third and a fifth, unbelievable!" Justifiably proud of her winning quartet, Wendy added: "You know, we bought Quanabi on-line for just R27000. With two seconds and a win from her first four starts for us, she has quickly earned that back and more!" As for Teichman, Wendy remarked: "He has to have it his own way and it was great that he fought right down to the line." When it comes to selecting yearlings at the sales, Wendy admits she has a soft spot for female families she has had success with, Teichman being a prime "I'veexample.had five of Teichman's family members in the yard,

Her first stakes winner as a fully-fledged trainer was City Edition. Successful in both the Gr3 Byerly Turk Plate and Listed Hyperion Handicap, he raced for the partnership of the late stalwarts Robin Hamilton and Matthew McElligott, who bred the chestnut son of London News. City Edition won them seven races and finished second in both the Gr3 Godolphin Barb Stakes and Gr3 King's AnotherCup. 'good un' Wendy had the pleasure of training was the Caesour filly Chant De Nuit, who matured into a formidable sprinter Raced by Charles Koster, Ian Longmore and Duncan McKenzie, Wendy remembers her fondly: "She was tiny, so small, she could hardly look over the stable door. We sent her to Charles's farm, where she spent over a year. She was a difficult filly to train and only started her career at three." They say dynamite comes in small packages and by the time her racing career was over, Chant De Nuit took to stud an enviable record of eight wins, amongst which the Gr2 Camellia Stakes and Sycamore Sprint, to go along with earnings of over half-a-million Rand, a right royal return on her bargain R20,000 yearling price tag. She went on to make her mark at stud as the dam of talented sprinter African Ruler, who likewise won eight races whilst running second in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Wendy'sSprint. most recent stakes winner Keep On Dancing, was also a quirky filly. "She was quite slight when she arrived in training," Wendy mused. "Over time, she strengthened up considerably. For the first year, she would stress when stabled and I trained her from an outside lean-to Thankfully, shelter!" she overcame her claustrophobia and Wendy's sympathetic handling brought out the best in the daughter of Silvano, who rewarded her with victories in the Gr2 Track And Ball Oaks, the East Coast Cup and Off To Stud Stakes. Owned and bred by Bruce and Anne Nicholas, Keep On Dancing was recently retired and is off to the Western Cape for a liaison with Rafeef. Wendy also trained the recently retired stakes performer Mount Laurel. Winner of the Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes for Gary and Dean Alexander, the daughter of Ideal World joined the Whitehead stable when they left for Australia. In Wendy's capable hands, she added another win to her tally, whilst running second in the Flamboyant and fourth in the Gr1 Garden Province. "She has already been covered by Got The Greenlight," Wendy Withcommented.aneyeto the future, Wendy has high hopes of Macara becoming her next black-type winner. "She was injured early in her three-year-old career but has come back beautifully," she said of the newly turned five-year-old, who picked up small black type when third in last month's Listed Off To Stud Handicap. "She's by Vercingetorix out of a Dubawi mare and her main mission this season will be the Flamboyant Stakes."

The KwaZulu -Natal Royals defeated the Cape Stingers by 40 points in the final showdown of the 2022 Global Team Horse Racing (GTH) Live Series last Friday evening, September 2, 2022. The gripping new series has been underway in Durban since August. As the champions, the KwaZulu Royals ride away with the 2022 GTH Live Series Champions title. Led by Summerveld trainer Wendy Whitehead and team captain Muzi Yeni, the Royals were the favourites to win with 92% of the vote in an online poll by GTH before the final race meeting.

Yeni, who has numerous Grade 1 races under his belt, rode alongside teammates Kabelo Matsunyane; Raymond Danielson; Jeffrey Syster; Ashton Arries; Thabiso Gumede; Athandiwe Mgudlwa; Jabu Jacobs; and Nicholas Patel during the series. Reserve jockey Keagan de Melo substituted for Jacobs on Friday Kabelonight.Matsunyane riding for the KwaZulu Royals was awarded the 2022 series’ Night Rider trophy, hand carved by Josphat Phiri, a Durban artist, as well as R30 000 in award money for accumulating the most points during the series. Runner-up Athandiwe Mgudlwa earned R20 000 and third-place jockey, Rachel Venniker, received R10 000.

GTH is an exciting new style of thoroughbredteam-basedhorse racing. Similar to T20 cricket competitions, teams score points throughout the series and the 2 teams with the most points compete in the final to determine the series winner. This year, three teams - the Cape Stingers, KwaZulu Royals and Gauteng Gijimaz - took part. GTH Marketing Director, Angus Campbell, said, condensed into 2.5 hours each week, the series’

format was fast-paced and exhilarating. “It has attracted both new and hardened horse racing fans. We hope to be able to build on this year’s progress at future events in and outside of South Africa,” he said. On the final night, Athandiwe Mgudlwa riding Teichman scored a crucial 46 points in race 8 to secure his team’s win. KwaZulu Royals’ team captain, Muzi Yeni, said: “GTH gave a chance to young riders to ride in quality races which exposed us to nice up-andcoming talent which has put a spark in our racing.” UK Co-Founders Steve Ajax and Charles Palmer keenly followed the series online and were eager to visit South Africa to experience the final. “We loved how the series turned out but couldn’t wait to see it for ourselves at Greyville”, enthused Steve Ajax. Charles Palmer continued, “The final event had an energy and level of excitement that makes us feel extremely positive for the future of horse racing”. Gold Circle contributed R500 000 in stakes for this year’s runners. Stephen Marshall, Gold Circle Event and Marketing Executive, was convinced the series could be scaled up in the future. “The idea of GTH is based on sponsorship racing and teams, much like Formula 1. It is fast-paced, with races every 10 to 20 minutes. We have made it work and allowing more jockeys an opportunity to ride, which is broadening the Andpool.”likeFormula 1, he said GTH was also bringing jockeys into the public eye by bringing them on stage and interviewing them. Marshall said: “For KwaZuluNatal and Gold Circle, we would definitely look at doing another series, but that would be up to the GTH crew, and we will have those discussions

44 going forward.” Gold Circle Racing Manager, Raf Sheik, believes there is also potential to bring GTH to other provinces. “We can build on it,” he said. Sheik hoped there would be continuity and more support from the racing community going forward. He felt that the timing of future events would determine the involvement of more top horses and jockeys but urged racing’s other stakeholders: “We need new ideas. What we are doing day in and day out as an industry is not working; we need to support these events.” Campbell concluded: “First, we will assess the success of the event and determine what appetite there is from racing SA to see future GTH team events hosted locally. We would like to say a big thank you to Gold Circle and the connections, trainers, owners, jockeys, team managers, and each of the incredible horses for their enthusiasm and performancesphenomenalthis year.”

Unbeaten Flightline cruises in at Del Mar In one of the most brilliant performances in the history of Del Mar racetrack, unbeaten Flightline staked his claim as the outstanding older Thoroughbred in America with a 19 l/4 length victory in the GrI, $1 million TVG Pacific Classic Saturday. It was a record winning margin, eclipsing the 12 ½ length triumph by Accelerate in the 2018 Pacific HisClassic.final time of 1:59.28 was only 17 one-hundredths of a second slower than the track record set by Candy Ride in the 2003 renewal of the mile and one-quarter contest. With regular rider Flavien Prat in the saddle, Flightline was content to rate off of Extra Hope in the early going, took command without being asked midway down the backstretch, then opened up on the far turn, leaving his five rivals far behind and cruised to the wire in majestic style. 48 Minzaal claimed the first Group One victory of his career as he demolished his rivals in the Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock. Trained by Owen Burrows and ridden by Jim Crowley, the four-year-old had placed at the highest level on multiple occasions but had yet to get his head in front. However, he righted that statistic with an effortless performance on Merseyside, sitting in behind the early pacesetters before laying down his challenge entering the last of the six furlongs. When Crowley gave the signal, the 7-2 shot hit top gear and he powered away to win by three and three-quarter lengths, in a record time, from last year’s winner Emaraaty Ana. Rohaan kept on for third but favourite Naval Crown dropped away in the closing stages having held every chance. Minzaal chased home subsequent Nunthorpe Stakes winner Highfield Princess on his most recent run in the Prix Maurice de Gheest and Burrows was thrilled to see the Mehmas colt get the verdict this time. The trainer, who was enjoying his second Group One success of the year following Hukum’s Coronation Cup win, said: “All credit to the team back home, they’ve been working hard and to get the job done is amazing. “It’s been a big year for me, you are soon forgotten in this game and I’ve been

“He’s a good horse, he’s not ground dependant, that’s as fast as he’s ever run on and he skipped off it. He’s a proper horse, he was a Gimcrack winner at two and this day has been coming. The lad told me on the way out he’s never been better and it certainly felt like that. “It’s great for Owen, too, he’s Jockeyflying.”

Andrea Atzeni was on board the runner-up Emaraaty Ana and felt his mount lost little in Hedefeat.said: “He ran a blinder. It was very similar to last year in that he travelled beautifully through the race and when I let him down he really picked up for me. He just found one a bit too good on the day.”

He added: “The French winner (Highfield Princess) franked the form in the Nunthorpe and we’ll be heading to Ascot next, that looks the obvious target.” Crowley admitted he was expecting a big performance from Minzaal before the race. He said: “That was very smooth. I was very confident coming here, I thought he ran a good race in France but I just got stuck behind one at the wrong time, so I was delighted to see Highfield Princess come out and win the Nunthorpe.

“He’s always promised to win us a Group One. He used to be slowly away from the stalls and lose his race at the start a little bit but he broke well, travelled smoothly and it was a very easy race to ride.

Hollie Doyle was pleased with third-placed Rohaan, who previously finished fourth behind Minzaal in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury in July. She said: “It was a great run and they went flat out, a lot quicker than at Newbury and I think that played into most of our strengths. It was a great run.” • Racing TV

51 Women’s month has come and gone, but there is no denying the fairer sex talent in the riding ranks. While our own Rachel Venniker has made a relatively slow start to the new season, her Irish counterpart Rachael Blackmore admits that ‘having a taste’ of winning big races like the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup and Randox Grand National continue to spur her on, but insists she is still not setting the champion jockey title as a goal. In 2021, Rachael became the first female jockey to win the Grand National in the 182-year history of the race. She also became the first woman to be leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival with six victories, including the Champion Hurdle, in 2021. TV: “Last year was incredible and I just feel so lucky to be able to ride the horses that I do. Coming home from Cheltenham with victories in the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle was just unbelievable and it was an incredible week. “As a jockey I’ve never really set myself big targets, I kind of just try to focus on my next ride. There are so many variables out of your control so I’ve just tried to deal with things in the short term. I try to ride as many winners on that day and then move on to the day after and do the same again and it seems to work for me. “You want to ride winners at places like Cheltenham and when you get a taste of doing that or a taste of riding a Grand National winner, it’s only natural that you want to do it again. You’re always striving to have winners on the big stage and to be in the position to do that.” However, Blackmore admitted that sealing a first champion jockey title is still not something she sets herself as a goal and continued: “I don’t really think about things like that and it’s not something that I ever thought was achievable “Evenreally. the one year where I was close to Paul Townend, I was still extremely far away because he and Willie Mullins are a force to be reckoned

If it’s getting to the end of the season and you’re close to it you’re going to start having a look, but it’s definitely not something I’d be aiming for in terms of goals.” Victory on A Plus Tard in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup was certainly a big moment for Blackmore and it offered a moment of redemption for the jockey, who found herself on the wrong mount when stablemate Minella Indo was victorious 12 months earlier. While it is too early to contemplate the chances of repeating that success next March, Blackmore is looking forward to the new campaign and a potential return to Haydock Park in November for the first Grade One race of the season, the Betfair Chase. She said: “When I was watching Minella Indo win the Gold Cup in 2021 you honestly don’t think you’re ever going to be in a position to win it yourself, but luckily that happened this “Theyear.way he accelerated after the last was just incredible. The final ‘Classic’ of the season, the Gr1 Cazoo St Leger is carded for Saturday afternoon at Doncaster racecourse. The oldest of the five English Classics is the highlight of a four-day festival which starts on Wednesday the 7th September, and will provide the racing public with Group racing and competitive handicaps throughout. The Johnston trained Dance In The Grass is unbeaten in two starts and is likely the favourite. Burrows described him as sore following the race and tests have discovered he suffered an injury which will end his career. Connections had planned to retire him after a run on British Champions Day on October 15, and he was a general 5-2 favourite for the Sprint.
