“I will nominate him for the mile and see how his prep goes. We will make a late decision to run or not – if that doesn’t work out it will be straight into the big one on 27 November.” Those were the words of master trainer Joey Soma a month back when telling the Sporting Post of his plans to target the Gr1 Gauteng Summer Cup with his stable star Got The Greenlight. Well the good news is that the champion is in the sixteen strong field for the R800 000 Gr2 Allied Steelrode – Onamissionmile at Turffontein on Saturday. With 62kgs on his back and a 14 draw to beat, Got The Greenlight has the class to do it and heads the line-up for

the mile standside track contest along with Malmoos and MK’s Pride. They are ably supported by the likes of Al Muthana, Puerto Manzano, Astrix and Bingwa, with a full field of 16 acceptances. There are five other feature races on the card, including the Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m, where top-class filly Desert Miracle will take on the boys.

The earlier time has been allocated as SABC 3 will be giving the Allied Steelrode – Onamissionmile, formerly known as the Charity Mile, full coverage. In addition, there are two carryovers at Turffontein, with

The coming weekend promises to be a festive one with the 2021 CTS Ready To Run and Unbroken Two-Year-Old Sale, scheduled for Sunday, preceded by the R2R gallops on Friday.

The R900 000 De Grendel Ready To Run Stakes, a joint venture by CTS and Cape Racing, is sandwiched in the middle of the weekend – making it three great days to find a champion and enjoy the company of like-minded folk.

Friday’s gallops at Kenilworth commence at 10h00 and will be livestreamed with commentary by Jehan Malherbe on www.tellytrack. com. The 1881 Lounge will be open for viewing and refreshments will be served.

A capacity field of sixteen eligible graduates of the 2020 CTS Ready To Run Sales will line up to contest South Africa’s largest single race stake this season so far at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The winner is paid R460 000 with cheques all the way down to R17 000 for eighth placer in the non black-type 1400m contest. Nine males and seven fairer sex gallopers, with two reserves make up a hotly contested final field, with Alan Greeff’s well performed East Cape resident Whatever Next heading a diverse nationally representative line-up, that includes Gauteng raiders Slings And Arrows (Candice Dawson) and Mounia (Sean Tarry). Normandy RTR graduate and Equus Champion Rio Querari storms home to win the Gr1 Computaform Sprint

FISH WHERE THE FISH ARE

Normandy’s Oscar Foulkes is no one-dimensional racehorse breeder. An opinionated thinker, he has done the hard yards in racing and business since his childhood days of the 1970’s in the paddocks of his parents’ champion producing farm.

provides more information than just seeing a yearling walking. Plus, the vendor has paid to keep the horse until this point.

With a big weekend ahead that culminates at Kenilworth on Sunday with the CTS Ready To Run Sale, we asked Oscar why anybody would buy a Ready-To-Run candidate rather than a yearling?

Normandy’s track record speaks for itself. They have seven lots on the sale – could the class of 2021 be one of their best ever?

“Buyers have the opportunity of seeing the horses in action during a grass gallop, which

And, of course, the record of RTR graduates speaks for itself. This is a kind of select sale, rather than ‘last chance saloon’,” he says with a smile.

“Our 2015 draft comprised Gr1 Cape Flying Championship winner Sergeant Hardy as well as other graded stakes-winners Crowd Pleaser, Bishop’s Bounty and Nordic Breeze.

14

Last season’s Equus Champion Sprinter Rio Querari was a product of our 2018 draft. Therefore, from us, any claim about best-ever, as you suggest, is going to be measured against a significant history! Our draft this year is smaller than usual, and we’re sure it will deliver results. Notably, we have a Silvano filly out of a full-sister to Mother Russia. There won’t be many more Silvanos offered for sale!” Is Ready-To-Run a literal term, or is it just sales mumbo jumbo, with the horses six months off a run? “It always depends upon the

v

horse, but ours are prepared as if a race is imminent. Saturday’s runner Homely Girl and Greek Myth had placed runs less than eight weeks after the 2020 RTR sale. Sergeant Hardy made a winning debut just five weeks after the 2015 sale. So they are mostly ready to run, in essence!” Are the Normandy draft there to sell on Sunday and do they have reserves?

It’s a first to be holding the gallops and the sale at Kenilworth as opposed to Durbanville. We asked the experienced racing man and marketer how that changes the dynamic? “Kenilworth is more central, and it’s a racecourse with a special place in South African racing. As much as I like the atmosphere of ‘the country course’, I’m always nervous about young horses galloping on the less forgiving surface of Durbanville,” he adds. The work-riders will put the sale candidates through their paces

at the beautiful racecourse on Friday. We asked Oscar whether the Normandy gallops riders are important to the packaging of the product and whether they are hand-picked. “You’re asking me to reveal trade secrets! I think workriders are very important, but they can only execute on good preparation. I should add that the work-riders get better and better every year. The work that’s being done with them is brilliant. For me, there are few equine sights more beautiful than a horse striding out in the hands of a skilled work-rider!” And the concept of a long

Wayne Marks

“While they are here to be sold, market conditions do require some degree of modest protection. If there is just one interested buyer regardless of the quality of the horse - it would be suicide to

have absolutely no reserve,” observes Oscar.

v

weekend of racing and sales – let’s not forget about the election on Monday! “Yes, a sense of occasion is an important part of building the hype and excitement, I feel.” Normandy’s graduates have also performed with distinction in previous ready to run races, with Sergeant Hardy, Rio Querari and Captainofthesea all getting

onto the board. Saturday’s race once again sees Normandy graduates in the running, with Homely Girl and Area Fifty One being the flag bearers. We asked Oscar how important a carrot the linked sales race is that for the prospective buyer? “I have to believe it is a factor. Having said that, the RTR race stake has unfortunately had to be reduced. The money comes from vendors and owners, and

we’re all under pressure!” We put it to Oscar that, while there have been bursts of isolated good news for the industry – take the doubling of the Charity Mile stake to R800 000 - is it likely that the instability around stakes could be undermining the market? We hear talk of Cape meetings being reduced to 60 a year – and possibly no racing for July and August.

Parade Ring Derby Scheduled for after the final race at Kenilworth on Saturday, the Parade Ring Derby raises funds for Songo, which has delivered an after-school programme in Stellenbosch’s Kayamandi township since 2008.

Watch the local jockeys take on the third-graders in a fun event! The fundraising component of the event is16 that owners sponsor jockeys to race in their colours. If you would like

to participate, please contact Oscar Foulkes (083 297 3402 or oscar@theslingshot.biz).

v

This can’t be good news for the market, surely? “I prefer to pay attention to reality rather than rumour. Fewer race meetings would be a disappointment. But if it’s the first step on a path to sustainability, so be it. Sometimes one has to get smaller before one grows. Pretty much every step that takes us further from the structures and institutions that got us into trouble is a good one!” he adds optimistically. We observed that the horse that won the Cape Classic on Saturday is now a four time winner – including dual features. He has banked R222 000 odd. While he is a colt with a bright future and has massive upside yet, should this be exciting owners with lesser horses, who are paying around R10k or 12k / month to feed their horses? “I believe that good horses keep owners going in the face of dire economics. It doesn’t mean, though, that we can rely on the thrill of owning

good winners; we need to do all we can to close the gap between stakes income and expenses.” Oscar then points out that the Hong Kong Jockey Club is Hong Kong’s single biggest funder of charities. He acknowledges that this is a product of the club’s unique situation in Hong Kong. “In a local context, charities provide a link for racing to access new networks, of forming new relationships. I remain a racing purist, but there may be times that the activities on charity race days add to the day’s entertainment, and I’d put the BMX races that we are hosting at Kenilworth on Saturday squarely into that category.” What Oscar is referring to is that the Kenilworth parade ring will once again come alive after the running of the last race on Saturday, when the jockeys have their annual BMX match races against children from the Songo programme.

17

The Parade Ring Derby raises funds for Songo, which has delivered an after-school programme in Stellenbosch’s Kayamandi township since 2008. “While we’re on that subject, I do need to add that we can also do a lot more to build the appeal of racing around the human athletes - the jockeys - who are among the best sportsmen (and women) in the country. They make us proud on a world stage. Also, their careers last a lot longer than the horses they ride, which gives greater longevity to the story one builds. Something to think about!” Oscar’s notes on his draft for Sunday: Lot 7 Tothemoonandback c. (Twice Over – Cat And The Moon) His dam was a five-time winner, including the Grade III Final Fling Stakes, and a few listed races. Classic distances will be well within his range.

v

Lot 34 Russian Taiga f. (Silvano – Matushka) This daughter of multiple champion sire Silvano is out of a full-sister to Mother Russia. She is from the only family to have produced two Queen’s Plate winners. This racy filly was born on 20 November, and she will just get better and better. Lot 38 Unnamed c. (Legislate – Mink Coat) Legislate’s first crop has produced winners and black-type horses at a sensational strike rate. 18 of those 23 foals are winners, which includes 6 stakes performers. This colt’s stakes-placed dam is a half-sister to the Summer

Cup winner Flirtation. Lot 44 La Mas Bella f. (Querari – Pelaya) German breeding is in the news again, courtesy of yet another Arc winner. This w ell-grown, substantial filly is bred on the hugely successful Querari – Silvano cross, from a German family that has already produced two stakes-winners by Querari. We have loved her since she was a foal; she could be anything. Lot 50 Unnamed f. (Flower Alley – Skipping Gal) Flower Alley fillies have been flying the flag for their internationally successful sire. This athletic filly is out of a Captain Al half-sister to Liquid

18

Mercury, and there is a lot of her broodmare sire about her. Lot 62 Madam Longsword f. (William Longsword – Woosh) William Longsword is making a promising start to his stud career. This is a substantial filly, with plenty of speed in her pedigree. Lot 65 Unnamed c. (Royal Mo – Alileo) From Royal Mo’s exciting first crop, out of a three-time winning Captain Al mare. His grandam was a stakes-winner by the sensational Galileo. This smart colt has a pedigree to match his looks!

preparation and the sales themselves. You form such an emotional and physical bond with the horses," she says.

"Seeing them racing leaves a lump in the throat because we know the part we've played in getting them there," she says with a smile.

and fourth in the Sun Met, is appealing. This colt is bred to stay from a line that has thrown up plenty of black type over the classic distances from both sides. "What we have seen from him is that he has a lovely character, and he looks as honest as the day is long. He is a substantial individual and nicely put together," says Monique. Next up is lot 21. The impressive bay colt is by Vodacom Durban July winner Pomodoro.

v

"He is the fifth produce of Hold Fast, whose first four foals all went on to win races from five furlongs to a mile. He is a tall horse and covers a lot of ground with his big stride. So we think he will attract a lot of attention. Clearly excited, Monique adds that he is a lovely mover. “We're all quite excited about his future. Russian Rock represented Pomodoro well in

the Gr1’s last season winning the Cape Guineas, and he always offers value for money." Monique is also looking forward to the 2021 De Grendel CTS Ready To Run Stakes on Saturday, where the Paarl Diamante team is represented by Vaughan Marshall-trained Fifty Fiver, who will be ridden from the pole position gate by top jockey Anton Marcus. Reflecting back, she is proud

24

to note that 100% of her 2020 draft have won or been placed in their careers already. Monique is confident of the same performance from her 2021 draft. Her smart duo can be viewed at Kenilworth before the sale on Sunday.

RED-LETTER DAY FOR THE BLUES Saturday proved to be a red-letter day for the famous Drakenstein blue with a sophomore son and daughter of their former champion sire Trippi, both raced and bred by themselves, grabbing top honours in the Kenilworth features.

The Bass-Robinson Domeyer hat-trick commenced with Firealley going all the way to win the fifth, and was rounded off with Amazimtoti’s storming late run on the outside to win the Gr2 feature by 2,25 lengths in a time of 87,64 secs. KZN visitor Gareth Wright and trainer Andre Nel enjoyed a good day with Fusillade rocking the Pick 6 opening leg, and Chansonette (40-1) was not disgraced in second, well ahead of the first of the Snaith quartet home in the 40-1 Mercury Rising. The favourite Maria Querol (5-2) moved up dangerously

The winner is not a big girl and reminds us a little of her outstanding Mom – the five-time Gr1 winner and dual Equus Champion, Beach Beauty, a winner of 17 races in an illustrious career. Amanzimtoti has run five times for 3 wins and 2 places. She has banked R205 450 and looks set for the Cape Fillies Guineas – she should enjoy the extra 200m of that contest, but let’s not overlook the claims of the likes of Gauteng stars Desert Miracle and Rain In Holland, just yet!

The son of End Sweep has two well-bred lots on the 2021 CTS Ready To Run Sale on Sunday. Amanzimtoti’s all-conquering

The Merits AMANZIMTOTI has had her merit rating raised from 97 to 110 following her emphatic win in the Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship for threeyear-old females over 1400m at Kenilworth on Saturday 23 October. The Handicappers were of the view that 5th placed SANTA MARIA made for

paternal half-sister Amanzimtoti, for the simple reason that her storming, come-from-behind victory brought back fond memories of her illustrious dam, Beach Beauty.

Both trained by Candice Bass-Robinson, the Drakenstein homebreds were sired by resident stallion standout Trippi and were ridden to victory by jockey Aldo Domeyer.

The adage ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ was never more appropriate than when describing the diminutive daughter of Dynasty, who proved herself the dominant racemare of her generation.

Bred by the late Trevor Armitage, Beach Beauty was leased to the Shanks Syndicate named in honour of his son Mark, who had died a few years previously. 'Shanks' was Mark's nickname at school.

Whilst the colt's win in the Gr3 Cape Classic was his fourth in a row and second at stakes level, it was arguably overshadowed by that of

At four, she defeated male rivals in the Gr2 Betting World 1900 and finished second in all of the Gr1 Paddock Stakes,Gr3 Victress and Gr3 Poinsettia Stakes.

Back home, she opened her winter campaign with a grand winning effort in the Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes before chasing home Horse of the Year Variety Club in the Gr1 Gold Challenge. She closed out the season on a high in the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes, where she blew away a star-studded field to post her second top level victory.

That decision paid off handsomely, as the six-yearold proved she had reached the height of her powers. Arguably better than ever, she repeated in the Gr1 Paddock Stakes and notched up a fourth Gr1 success by defeating another fine line-up in the Majorca Stakes, which prompted her trainer to remark: "She is just too good. The more they throw at her, the more she finds."

However, it was as a five-year-old that Beach Beauty came of age. After winning the Gr2 Premier Trophy, she broke through at Gr1 level in the Gr1 Paddock Stakes and was not disgraced when third, beaten less than two lengths, in the

Named the season's Champion Older mare, Beach Beauty could have been packed off to the breeding shed post-haste, hence it was a bold call by her connections to keep such a well-credentialled broodmare prospect in training for another season.

Challenge once again proved elusive - she again had to settle for second, when beaten less than a length by King Of Pain in a falsely run race. Beach Beauty brought down the curtain on a stellar career with a flawless performance in the Gr1 Garden Province. The mare made light work of her title defence when she flashed her remarkable turn of foot for the last time to score with authority. Upon her return to scales, Beach Beauty received a rapturous welcome from her adoring fans, and rightly so. She had maintained her brilliant form right up to an age where most of her contemporaries had already produced their first foals! In a fitting honour to a great champion, Beach Beauty was honoured on Gold Cup day with a special farewell parade, in addition to which her name was linked to the same day’s Gr1 Champions

Cup. For the second time in a row, she was the unanimous choice as the season's Champion Older Female. Significantly, no less than twelve of Beach Beauty's 17 victories were at Graded level and she retired with earnings of R5,330,225, which at the time, placed her behind only Igugu on the list of all-time leading South African female earners. The champion was sold at the conclusion of her career and she became a glittering addition to the powerful Drakenstein broodmare band. That she has transferred her racetrack ability to the paddocks would be an understatement. Now the dam of two stakes winners, her first runner, the Trippi colt Wild Coast, won the Gr2 World Sports Betting Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville while full sister Amanzimtoti stamped herself a leading contender for the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas.

34

Drakenstein owner Gaynor Rupert was delighted with the Graded stakes double, remarking: "It was a fantastic weekend for us." Elaborating on the prized mare, she added: "Beach Beauty has a lovely Lancaster Bomber yearling filly, a Gimmethegreenlight filly foal at foot and has been sent to Vercingetorix this year."

Mike’s Chick (Keagan de Melo) makes it two on the bounce at Turffontein on Saturday

DYNASTY DAUGHTERS DOMINATE While the late Dynasty is fast making a name for himself as a sire of sires, the Fort Wood sired Horse Of The Year is also making his mark as a broodmare sire. This was underlined in no uncertain terms on Saturday, when rising star filly Amanzimtoti (Trippi) ran out an eye catching winner of the Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship, stamping herself a likely Gr1 prospect in the making. Incidentally, Dynasty's sire Fort Wood is the damsire of Gr1 South African Fillies Sprint winner Real Princess,

another daughter of Trippi. Amanzimtoti was not the only maternal granddaughter of Dynasty to impress on Saturday. The 3yo Mike's Chick (a daughter of Vercingetorix out of the Dynasty mare Strawberryshortcake) made it back-to-back wins when running out a clear-cut winner over 1600m at Turffontein and she too looks an interesting prospect going forward. Not only is Dynasty damsire of Amanzimtoti, he also ranks as the damsire of Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship fourth, and Listed Tabonline.co.za Irridescence

36

Stakes queen, Maria Querol (Querari). The Dynasty effect was also seen to good advantage in last season's Irridescence Stakes, with the former Horse Of The Year broodmare sire of the 1-2-4 finishers in the form of Maria Querol, Amanzimtoti and Oh So Squishy, respectively. Amanzimtoti is the second graded stakes winner produced by Dynasty's wonderful daughter Beach Beauty. The latter also rates as the dam of 2020 Gr2 World Sports Betting Guineas hero Wild Coast -a full-brother to Amanzimtoti.

v

Beach Beauty was arguably her sire's very best daughter, with Dynasty the sire of a total number of six Gr1 winning daughters in all. Another high-class daughter of Dynasty is Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge winner Demanding Lady. The latter, whose fourth dam produced the top-class stallion Silver Hawk (Roberto), made headlines when her son Charles (Trippi) made R6 000 000 to top the 2017 Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Charles went on to finish second in both the Gr1 Gbets

Cape Derby and 2020 Gr2 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile. Charles' full-brother is the useful Somerset Maugham who ran third in both the Gr3 World Sports Betting Legal Eagle Stakes and Gr3 World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes last season. Dynasty, whose daughter Indaba ranks as the dam of the speedy filly Cold Fact (What A Winter), is also the broodmare sire of high-class performers Divine Odyssey (Gr2 Colorado King Stakes, Gr3 Jubilee

37

Handicap) and Springs Of Carmel (G2r Pospack SA Fillies Nursery), with the former a son of Oratorio and the latter a daughter of Captain Of All. With a number of wellperformed, and well-bred daughters yet to be represented on the racecourse, Dynasty looks poised for further success as a broodmare sire in the years to come.

Saturday’s Kenilworth feature. The family patriarch Mike Bass had a superb record in the race earlier this century, which included some big names like Captain’s Secret (2009) and earlier the Riverton flyer Blue Tiger, Floatyourboat and Tobe

43

Or Nottobe, amongst others. Candice looks to have a powerful arsenal this term looks set for a super summer. A half-brother to the stable’s recent Diana Stakes third-placer Marmalisa (Duke Of Marmalade), Trip Of Fortune shed his maiden in

open company at his second run, then won the Listed Somerset 1200, before opening his 3yo season account when beating 2021 Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Russian Rock. And he came in as the joint-highest rated galloper with Sophomore Sprint winner Zapatillas on Saturday, and the duo duly filled the first two places. Safe Return made much of the early running, stalked by Zapatillas, Trip Of Fortune and the well-supported Universal. Into the final stages Safe Return was hanging tough, but Luyolo Mxothwa produced Zapatillas (3-1) down the centre with what looked a potential winning effort. Riding with supreme

confidence though, Aldo Domeyer had the situation under control and unleased Trip Of Fortune (3-1) to win by 0,40 lengths in a time of 87,96 secs. Stablemate to the winner, Xavion (20-1) came from wide out to run an eyecacthing third just 0,30 lengths further back, with Double Superlative (8-1) finishing best of the Snaith trio to run fourth, 1,25 lengths adrift down the rail.

Doowaley mare, Louvre, who raced for Ashburton veteran, Duncan Howells. South Africa’s Champion Sire in 2015-2016, Trippi has two lots on Sunday’s CTS Ready To Run Sale.

The fancied recent maiden runaway winner Universal never looked comfortable and was under an animated ride by Anton Marcus some way out.

The winner is bred and owned by Drakenstein, and is listed as a R750 000 National Yearling Sale graduate. He has won 4 races with 1 place from 5 starts for R222 700. It has to be observed that it is sobering that a four-time winner, which includes two feature successes, boasts earnings of this amount.

The handsome son of Gimmethegreenlight ran 7 lengths off the winner and surely deserves another shout in this kind of company.

The Concorde Cup at Kenilworth on 20 November looks to be a likely return match for a few of those who ran here.

A son of Drakenstein’s evergreen End Sweep stallion Trippi, Trip Of Fortune is out of the versatile ten-time winning

The Merits TRIP OF FORTUNE has had his rating raised from 104 to 106 after his victory in the Grade 3 Cape Classic for three-year-olds over 1400m at Kenilworth on Saturday. It was 2nd placed ZAPATILLAS who was used as the line horse when assessing this race,

which leaves him unaltered on a rating of 104. 3rd placed XAVION was raised from 95 to 104, while 4th finisher DOUBLE SUPERLATIVE goes up from 82 to 101. There were also increases for SILVER FALCON, who is up to 95 from 90, and for RESONATE,

44

who was picked up from 90 to 94. The only drop was for SAFE RETURN, who is down from 103 to 101. Media release by National Horseracing Authority on Tuesday 26 October 2021.

GOODBYE LYLE

Lyle Hewitson will return to Hong Kong with a point to prove after it was announced on Tuesday the 23-year-old has been granted a licence from November 26 until the end of the season. A three-time champion jockey with multiple Gr1 victories to his name, Hewitson is itching to return to Hong Kong after producing only three winners from 251 rides during his last stretch in the city, reported the South China Morning Post on Tuesday. “I’m so excited, I can’t wait,” Hewitson said. “Obviously things were really tough last time but I just feel like where I am now personally and riding wise, I’ve grown up a lot so I think I might have almost needed that experience to make me mature. I think I will be able to display that when I come this time around.” After spending six months in Hong Kong between September 2019 and early March 2020, Hewitson had a successful stint in Japan with the backing of powerhouse stable Northern Farm before returning to South Africa and dominating the 2020-21 season with 263 winners and a third title. “I had 19 winners from I think 18 meetings including two Grade Twos in Japan and wherever you go around the world you learn something, so it was big for my career in terms of me as a rider and as an individual,” Hewitson said. “I really put my head down and went hard [during last season in South Africa] and things went really well – not only in terms of the winners but I just felt like it was a really big season for me in terms of how I developed and matured as a jockey. A lot of positives came from that season.”

EQUUS – STEP IN THE RIGHT

DIRECTION

The basis for the awarding of the equine categories for the Equus Awards from the current season has been changed to a South African version of the UK’s Cartier Racing Awards. This was announced last week. The Cartier Awards are awarded each year based on a combination of the following three elements:• Pattern Race Points System • Expert Panel Rating • Public Vote For the new South African version each of these three elements will carry an equal weighting (33,3%) in the final award calculation. The Pattern Race points

system will be based on the result of the season’s Graded races, followed by an expert panel rating and a public vote which will collaboratively determine the Equus Award in each of the equine categories. The list of nominees for the expert panel rating and the public vote in each of the equine categories will be determined by points accumulated by each horse during the season in Graded races, with an exception made for the Champion Stayer category where Listed performances are also to be included. The points system will ensure that South Africa’s best races are awarded the most points in each category and each horse nominated to the final voting list has demonstrated potential

55

Champion status. Grade 1 races will carry more points than Grade 2 races, Grade 2 more than Grade 3, open-races more points than restricted-races (by age or sex), and WFA or fixed-weight races more points than conditions or handicap races of the same grading. Additionally, certain races have been designated “Super Status” in their respective Grading in acknowledgement of their enhanced importance in the pattern of Graded races through the season. These races will carry the most points in each category and Grading. Read the full story – please click here

Rachel Venniker and Tienie Prinsloo celebrate the victory

THIS MAN CAN TRAIN WINNERS! The sole survivor of Gold Circle’s well-intentioned migration of trainers from the Northern Cape after the Flamingo Park debacle of 2020, Ashburton-based Tienie Prinsloo continues to

grind away despite a despairing lack of support. An emotional Tienie heaped praise on rising star Rachel Venniker after the Dachasponsored rider piloted her first

winner as a 2,5kg claiming learner at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday. The fast improving Rachel continues to change perceptions of lady riders in

some quarters, and rode a cracker for UK-based owner Ron Harris aboard the Prinsloo-trained Living Waters. The 48 year old Tienie chose to speak Afrikaans when interviewed by Warren Lenferna in the post-race interview. The former Kimberlite thanked Mr Harris for the loyalty. The man who won the Northern Cape Championship with a string of only 13 horses, is trying to remain competitive in the tougher climes of KwaZulu-Natal with just 17 horses. His small string means that he has to

keep his charges ticking over and he does an excellent job with a close to 29% place strike-rate. “I know everybody is under pressure and wish there was more support. I treat my patrons with honesty, respect and kindness, and we communicate regularly. I could be doing great things with some decent stock. It’s very tough, but thankfully I have been contacted by a good owner and will also be buying for another at the BSA November 2yo Sale. “We are enjoying the holiday province so it would really be nice to be more competitive. The training facilities are excellent at Ashburton. And

58

it’s not like Kimberley where the small town environment means that everybody knows everything. Elsa and myself are enjoying the lifestyle and are here to stay. All I need is some more horses. We can’t win races without horses and owners!” Tienie invited any owners or prospective owners to email him at: elsa.prinsloo@hotmail.com. “I am not a hard sell sort of guy. I’d be happy to chat to anybody and see if we can be of assistance,” he concluded.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO WIN!

HIGH SPIRITS WITH DACHA Does CBD make you high? This is probably the question that we are asked the most. Sometimes I find myself still being surprised by this question, simply because I’m knee-deep in the CBD realm. The more people we chat to, the more we realise how many education opportunities lie ahead of us. We’re excited that you can be part of the journey, writes Shannon Smith. A few people who joined us on this venture also had no idea about the real benefits of CBD up until we arrived in their lives. What could be frustrating - entering a market where you constantly have to explain who and what you are - is actually turning out to be a fun experience. Apart from my one jawdropping answer in jest during

a meeting “Yes, actually - I’m high right now,” – We have discovered the many different opportunities to help provide information through the numerous industries that can benefit from the addition of CBD as well as hemp. This means that there are literally no limits. Last week, while chatting to our sponsored jockey, Rachel Venniker, she was telling us about how she got a face injury from one of her horses. Being an ambassador for our CBD Wellness Range, Bush, she had been applying our CBD Lip Balm continuously. She said her sores healed faster than ever and she explained how she’s astounded by the product. We had similar feedback from someone who applied our CBD Tissue Oil to their post-surgery wounds. We’re not just saying this

61

because we’re biased and love our brand - It’s because CBD is nature’s healer. In fact, Sports Nutritionists are now recommending CBD to help rebuild muscles and maintain focus during training. So, does CBD make you high? It’s making us high with glee, and keeping our spirits high, because we can see the potential the future holds for the industry and for the health of the nation. South Africa’s exposure to CBD and hemp is slightly behind the rest of the world, but our team at Dacha believes that with our collective resources, minerals and climate, Africa has the potential to soar. It all starts with education and exposure. This is why we are grateful for opportunities like this with Sporting Post,

v

because we can have some fun with the Dacha-sponsored horses, and we can get your input and feedback. CBD can go in your smoothie, under your tongue, on your skin, in your hair, on a wound, in yourtea and you can even give it to your dog. One of our most heart warming stories is that of a lady we met by chance who has a beautiful Collie with bladder cancer. Her dog was given 6 weeks to live. Part of our R&D, she gladly accepted a cocktail to give her dog daily

to attempt to combat the illness. That was about 6 months ago, and both Collie and Mommy are happy and well. Dacha means ‘Dagga’ in Swahili. Waaaay back when the Koisan were still roaming our soil, they grew wild ‘Dagga’ and used it for medicinal purposes. With our roots and beliefs deep in Africa, we decided that Dacha (pronounced Dasha) is suitable for our story. Our story’s spirit literally runs far and wide, because we have our Spirit of Dacha running on Monday 1 November.

62

On the 31st we have So Dacha, Silvan Park and the naughty beautiful beast, Shavout on track. By now, I don’t need to explain to you - Get your betting on, get your spirits high and stand a chance to win a Dacha Hamper. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR JACOBS 66

Dr Jacobs and Peter Endres at Saturday evening’s German Racing & Breeding Awards

v

Maine Chance Farms’ supremo Dr Andreas Jacobs is celebrating his birthday today and tells us that ‘it’s just another working day!’ Dr Jacobs purchased Maine Chance Farms from the late Graham Beck in 2002. His love affair with Africa started in 1989 when his wife Natalie worked in a hospital in Cape Town. “We started dating here. So we love the country and we fell in love with the stud, which has both beauty and ruggedness. For me, Maine Chance is pleasure and I try to keep it this way. If the hassle gets bigger than the joy, I will be out. I hope John F. Kennedy’s words will be heard louder in this country: “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”. In the photograph, Dr Jacobs is seen with Peter Endres, owner of Gestüt Auenquelle, who race Torquator Tasso who won the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 3 weeks ago

“Peter was Champion owner for 2020 and we at Gestüt Fährhof are Champion Breeder,” Dr Jacobs proudly tells the Sporting Post. Extraordinarily, this was the 31st time Gestüt Fährhof won the Champion Breeder and/or Owner Award in Germany! The powerful Jacobs family operation will be standing Alson in the 2022 breeding season. The horses that helped them to win the Champion title in 2020 include Lancade, the German 1000 Guineas winner, Quian, who is Germany's leading stayer and winner of the Gr3 German St. Leger and the Gr2 Oleander Rennen. Dr Jacobs clearly has a soft spot for another major contributor in Potemkin, a Gr3 winner at the age of 9! “He boasts one of the most amazing careers in German racing with a total of 7 Group wins to his credit.” In comparing German and SA breeding, Dr Jacobs says that the two countries are quite similar – more so than many

67

would imagine. “Both countries like to breed a top class and sound stayer. And then top female pedigrees are important and combined with good stallions.” Looking ahead, and responding to a question as to what would be his birthday wish, Dr Jacobs told the Sporting Post that his hope for the next 12 months is to be the breeder of a classic winner – that is a Guineas, Oaks or Derby anywhere in Europe or South Africa. “And then long-term, the continuation of the Silvano-legacy through Vercingetorix as Champion Sire and Querari as Champion Broodmare Sire. On the private side, my dream is a riding Safari with my wife Natalie and our 4 children anywhere in Africa,” added the passionate horseman. Happy Birthday Dr Jacobs.

1978 Holiday Inns winner Furious (Robbie Sham) is led in by Mr & Mrs Cyril Hurvitz

A SCARY OWNER

The charismatic Furious was Fred Rickaby’s top pick of the 1976 National Sale. Cyril Hurvitz had to go to R17 000 for the son of Savonarola. Ten days after the sale he developed a temperature that ran for weeks and later suffered an attack of biliary. Then he developed hock and knee trouble and because he needed a long rest, he was cut. For months afterwards he struggled with an extremely low blood count. Furious’ first start in Anne

Upton’s care was over 1600m at Scottsville in January 1978, which he won comfortably. He won again at Greyville in February.

“I phoned Hurvitz to tell him he was in Botswana counting his cattle - and he immediately said he wanted Furious to win the Holiday Inns at the end of the year. I said well that’s a bit of a step – I have to qualify the horse for it. In those days you had to really qualify them and we had to win a big feature race to get him in. Furious won the Black & White Gold Bowl in October and the UTA, so 70

he had good qualifications,” said Anne. On 9 December 1978, less than 11 months after his first win, Furious won the Holidays Inns in style. Asked what her emotions were at the time Anne answers: “You know, it’s great to win a big race, I can tell you that now, but with Furious I was very relieved because the scary thing about this horse was his owner!” Hurvitz was the biggest gambler in SA at the time and had started backing Furious in March. He won a fortune.

A crowd of 10 000 vaccinated people will be allowed into Flemington to celebrate the A$8 million Melbourne Cup next Tuesday. The final 24-horse field for the Lexus Melbourne Cup is taking shape. With fourth acceptances now confirmed, the order of entry has been whittled away to just 35 horses left in the mix to compete in the 3200m handicap at Flemington. Race favourite Incentivise remains at the top of the order of entry following his Caulfield Cup win and is ballot-exempt alongside

Grand Promenade who won the Bart Cummings in early October. Second favourite Spanish Mission is fifth in order, behind Verry Elleegant and last year’s winner Twilight Payment. Derby king Explosive Jack, reigning Victoria Derby winner Johnny Get Angry and intentional raider Away He Goes are all guaranteed a run. On Sunday it was announced that Victorian residents are set to be given more freedoms on Friday — just in time for the weekend prior to the Cup. It is huge news for locals, with many taking the opportunity at

74

this time of year to stretch the Cup into a four-day weekend. It was announced earlier this month that 10 000 fans will be allowed into the venue on Cup day — and Victoria’s vaccination rates remain on track to make sure a significant crowd will be allowed in attendance. No crowds at all were allowed at the event last year. The only threat to the Cup remains the confirmation of a crowd of 5 500 being permitted into the Flemington venue for Saturday’s Victoria Derby. If the event is a success and

v

does not trigger a spike in infections, health authorities will push ahead with the plans for a bigger crowd on Cup day. Under the restrictions that will still be in place, spectators will be separated into different seating zones, with food and drinks only being served as part of table service. Masks will also be mandatory. Victoria recorded 1461 new locally acquired coronavirus infections on Monday, a significant drop from Sunday’s figure of 1935 cases, sparking hope the curve in Victoria could be flattening. The state was expected to reach its 80 per cent doubledose vaccination target on

Friday, which will trigger a raft of new freedoms from 6pm. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced the significant changes on Sunday and said even more freedoms were likely to happen on November 24 when 90 per cent of eligible Victorians would be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Victorian Covid commander Jeroen Weimar said the Cup will be a crucial case in deciding what restrictions will look like for major events planned for the rest of the summer. “If we can see that these case numbers don’t go crazy, if we can ensure that we can keep the hospitalisation numbers as low as possible so we can keep

75

Victorians out of hospital, and the way we do that is by getting more people vaccinated,” he said. “If all those things happen over the coming weeks then we have a really good run in to see how that’s going to play and what it means for December and events like the Boxing Day tests.” The Melbourne Cup has been held on the first Tuesday of November every year since 1875, except for during the Second World War, when it was run on Saturdays. Between the first running in 1861 and the change in 1875, the Melbourne Cup was run on a Thursday.

O’BRIEN GRABS LAST GR1 TROPHY OF SEASON Luxembourg justified huge support with success in the Gr1 Vertem Futurity Trophy on Saturday. The juvenile colt by Camelot - a winner of this race in 2011provided Aidan O’Brien

with a record-equalling tenth win in this prestigious two-year-old contest. The final Group 1 race of the British flat season of 2021 over the straight mile at Town Moor,

79

saw the big and still very ‘raw’ youngster score with authority by one and three-quarter lengths. Bookmakers reacted to his victory by cutting his

v

ante-post price to 4-1 favourite for next year's Cazoo Derby at Epsom. In the race, he was always travelling well just off the pace, before quickening and getting to the front easily under Ryan Moore. Rated behind only Native Trail among the season's juveniles, the 2000 Guineas could be first up next season according to the Ballydoyle maestro. "He's always been very exciting," O'Brien said. "He's a big horse, he travels very well, everything seems right with him. Today he had to get down and stretch in the last furlong, which was good for him really. He was very babyish in front but he's a lovely horse.” The last four Vertem winners have won the 2,000 Guineas or the Irish equivalent and O'Brien is confident that Luxembourg has the speed to cope with that test. "He has a lot of class and a lot of pace," the trainer added. "The last day he won at the Curragh they said his

last three furlongs were faster than all the sprints on that day.” Trainer Roger Varian is also aiming at the Guineas with third-placed Bayside Boy. He said: "He was a touch unlucky. When he needed room, he didn't have any. I don't think it stopped him winning but he'd have been a good second with a clear run. "We'll winter him and aim him at the Newmarket Guineas because he deserves that." There was also Group 1 action at Saint-Cloud racecourse in France over the weekend. El Bodegon made all under an inspired Ioritz Mendizabal on Saturday in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud run over 2000m. The juvenile son of Kodiac provided fledgling British trainer James Ferguson with his first Gr1 victory. William Buick tracked El Bodegon on the unbeaten Godolphin favourite Goldspur and the pair looked the likely winner at the top of the straight. However, French jockey Mendizabal regathered El Bodegon for a second effort and the son of Kodiac had the

80

race in safe keeping a furlong out, with Stone Age running on to be second. "I couldn't quite work out what was going on with a furlong to go," said an overjoyed Ferguson. "We love the horse and from his last win we planned this is where we wanted to go. But leading with a furlong to go wasn't really part of my planning. "He's improved with every run and mentally as well, he takes his travelling very well. I thought he was given a great ride, he relaxed very well in front." Paddy Power cut El Bodegon to 25-1 for the Epsom Derby and there was no disguising the way he picked up on the heavy ground. Charlie Appleby, assessing the run of Goldspur, said: "Take nothing away from the winner, he's improving. Our horse has got a good run there, but the winner quickened, and our horse couldn't."

Joao Magic Moreira – broke duck of 1 win in last 28 rides

MAGIC RETURNS IN STYLE Joao Moreira ended a challenging recent run with a familiar display of dominance, booting home a treble at Sha Tin on Sunday in a display highlighted by the spectacular return of Master Eight and victory in the programme’s feature aboard Xiang Yin. Cutting Zac Purton’s lead to nine – after trailing the

Australian by 12 winners at one stage in the jockey championship tussle – Moreira roared back to form, while Frankie Lor, Tony Cruz and Francis Lui shared training honours with doubles. Vincent Ho also chimed in with a brace as Master Eight’s triumph in the second section of the Class 3 Spoonbill Handicap (1200m) drew high

83

praise from his trainer and jockey. “He’s talented, promising. He didn’t disgrace in any aspect. He knew what we were asking him to do today and he just delivered. He’s a very nice horse to ride and he’s got a bright future,” Moreira said. Lor was similarly impressed

v

after the Oamaru Force gelding maintained an unbeaten record after three outings. “Today, no-one can lead and win the race, only this one so far,” Lor said. “He looked very good, we will stick to 1200 (metres) – if you go a little bit further, he might be too keen. “If he sticks to 1200 (metres) there are still some big races for him later on. He looks like he will still improve, he’s only had three starts and he needs to learn to relax a little bit more and he will be better. “Next start he will go up to Class 2 and we will know a lot more then.” Lor and Moreira also combined with Xiang Yin in

the Class 3 The Chinese General Chamber Of Commerce Cup Handicap (1600m), with the Sixties Icon gelding registering his second win of the season. “He appreciated the light weight (118lb) on his back and he came into today’s race with a win under his belt. He’s now understanding what it’s all about, so congratulations to Frankie’s team – they’ve done a great job with both these horses,” Moreira said. With only one win from his previous 28 rides entering the meeting, Moreira rode with trademark confidence with the first of his three winners materialising via Manfred Man’s So Awesome in the Class 5 Heron Handicap (1400m).

84

Luke Ferraris had to endure an anxious wait before Jimmy Ting’s Flying Sword was declared the winner of the Class 4 Kestrel Handicap (1400m) after an objection was lodged from Karis Teetan, who rode runner-up Boom Stitch. Ferraris said: “I’m very happy, obviously it’s taken me a bit of a while to crack it at Sha Tin but very glad to get it done for Jimmy. We had a dream passage throughout, he had the draw to help him and the race panned out exactly as I wanted to.” • Hong Kong racing continued at Sha Tin today with an eight-race fixture on the dirt.

Mike de Kock has acquired two former Godolphin runners for the 2022 Dubai World Cup Carnival.

United Kingdom and Australia. He said: “I started the Blue Racing Syndicate for friends and acquaintances to bring new ownership together so we can experience success at the highest standards of racing around the globe with Mdk Racing.”

Three-year-old geldings Magical Land (Frankel) and First Order (Dubawi) have joined his string in the Blue Stables at Meydan alongside existing De Kock team members Marshall, Najem Suheil, Majestic Mambo and Celtic Voyager. Magical Land, formerly trained by Charlie Appleby, has raced seven times for a win and five places. He last ran at Newmarket in July, when he won a handicap over a mile on the July course in the hands of William Buick. Magical Land is a halfbrother to Althiqa, the 2021 Gr1 Diana Stakes winner and he was bought for Mohammad Mardood’s Blue Racing Syndicate, Mike himself and the new Gulf Racing Club. Mardood, Mike de Kock’s representative and assistant trainer in Dubai, owns a share in Magical Land and he put together the interests from the United Arab Emirates, the

The other shares are held by Gulf Racing Club, a new group administered by Vermaak Equine and comprising of South Africans Wilfred Pirzl, Brent Donnelly, Mpho Themba, Suzette and Basie Viljoen, Etienne Braun and Wayne Mealing. First Order is owned by Mardood’s Blue Stable Syndicate alongside Mike and also exceptionally well bred. He was born from Punctilious, the top race mare who finished third to Ouija Board in the 2004 Gr1 The Oaks and won the Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks. “We’re rebuilding the yard with quality horses and we value the support received so far,” said Mardood, who worked as a Masar Godolphin graduate in 2018 and is now under Mike’s astute mentorship.

Due to take place on Saturday, March 26th, 2022, all races will be run for at least US$ 1 million, which ensures Dubai’s commitment to supporting the industry. Dubai Racing Club also announced recently that the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic is offering a US$6 million purse, moving it back to its pre-pandemic value. The Gr1 Dubai Turf, sponsored by DP World, is being increased to US$5 million, whilst the flagship event – the Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline – is maintaining the highest purse of the night at US$12 million. The 2021-2022 Dubai race season, which will kick-off on Thursday, 4 November, will include 22 meetings in all.

again on Sunday. “This is hard work paying off. We’ll keep it going as long as we can. Runners find their places, it gets harder to win and there will 88 be quiet times

Legendary jockey, Frankie Dettori, shares his remarkable life story in this astonishingly intimate autobiography. When Lanfranco ‘Frankie’ Dettori arrived on British shores in 1985, aged just 14, he couldn’t speak a word of English. Having left school just a year earlier and following in the footsteps of his father, he was eager to become a stable boy and apprentice jockey, willing to do everything it took to make it. This was his first, but certainly not his last, leap of faith. Despite his slight size, Frankie’s impact upon the British racing scene was immediate and significant. Brimming with confidence, charisma and personality, and with what was clearly a precocious talent, in 1990 he became the first teenager since Lester Piggot to win

over 100 races in a single season. By 1996, Frankie was already established as a celebrity in the sport and an adopted national treasure, but it was his extraordinary achievement of winning all seven races in a single day at Ascot that cemented his reputation as the greatest rider of his generation. Nearly 25 years later, and having won the Longines World’s Best Jockey for three consecutive years running, Frankie has demonstrated an unparalled level of longevity at the pinnacle of his sport. But his story is not simply one of uninterrupted success, but also of personal anguish, recovery and restoration – both in and out of the saddle. Now, for the very first time, Frankie compellingly reveals the lows to his highs; the plane crash that nearly killed him, the drugs ban that nearly made him

quit the sport, and the acrimonious split from Godolphin that threatened his future. But Leap of Faith is also a story of love – for the sport he continues to dominate to this day, the great horses of his era (Stradivarius, Golden Horn, and of course Enable), and most importantly for his family, who have supported him every step of the way. Heartfelt and poignant, this is not simply a memoir, but a celebration of perseverance and defying the odds. Leap Of Faith is available from Thursday – please click here for more

Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns will lock horns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday in the final of the MTN8 competition. City have defeated AmaZulu and Swallows to reach the final, while Downs saw off Kaizer Chiefs and Golden Arrows. Cape Town City vs Mamelodi Sundowns | Saturday 30 October | Moses Mabhida Stadium | 18h00 Chad Nagel writes that Eric Tinkler's men survived a late scare to beat Golden Arrows 4-3 in the DStv Premiership at the weekend, whereas Downs continued their superb start to the season with a 2-0 win over Maniema Union in the CAF Champions League. The Citizens are struggling at the moment and are languishing outside the Top 8, while the Brazilians occupy top spot in the DStv Premiership and are the only team still unbeaten. Mamelodi Sundowns are the favourites at 11/20 with Hollywoodbets with Cape Town City at 54/10 and a draw at 26/10.

To Win (90 mins) CT City 54/10 Draw 26/10 Sundowns 11/20 To Lift Cup CT City 26/10 Sundowns 1/4 Cape Town City Despite a poor start to the season, languishing outside the top eight in 11th position, Cape Town City have an opportunity to give their fans something to cheer about this weekend. Only a single match separates the Citizens from winning their second MTN8 within a space of four years, but standing in their way is Mamelodi Sundowns who will also be eager to win the one trophy that has eluded them for 14 years. Tinkler's side go into this clash as underdogs but that is a tag that they have dealt with very well before. On the way to lifting their first MTN8 title in 2018, the Cape Town club defied the odds to upset the Brazilians in the semis with a penalty shoot-out victory.

that they can come up with a plan to beat South Africa’s dominant team. If they can beat Downs and lift this year's crown, apart from adding silverware to their trophy cabinet, it will surely give them the confidence they need to slingshot themselves up the DStv Premiership table. Mamelodi Sundowns This is one of those games, that on paper, should be a walk in the park for Mamelodi Sundowns. But as we know, football isn't played on paper, it’s played on grass. Despite being the dominant team in South African football for a period of time now, Masandawana have struggled in this eight-team format in recent years, with the Chloorkop side failing to get past the semi-finals since they were thumped 3-0 by Bidvest Wits in the 2016 final. Downs will be aiming to finally end their MTN8 hoodoo and get revenge on the Citizens, who dumped them out of the 2018 tournament en route to lifting the trophy.

picking up where they left off last term. They sit top of the DStv Premiership table, four points clear of second-placed SuperSport having played a game less, and are through to the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After the win against Maniema Union last weekend, co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi told the media that he is confident his side have the capacity to lift

any trophy still on offer this season. “We are very confident that the group that we have has got the capacity to lift any trophy that is on offer, but we have to take each and every game and give it the seriousness and attention that it deserves.” The last time the Brazilians won the top eight competition was when it was still known as

the SAA Top 8 back in 2007. Prediction: Mamelodi Sundowns (11/20) Mamelodi Sundowns have been exceptional in recent years and have a point to prove in the MTN8. As much as I love a good underdog, Masandawana should prove too strong for the Citizens.
