The NBC World Series Returns
August 3
The 89th NBC World Series, powered by Evergy, kicks off August 3 at Wichita State University’s Eck Stadium. Wichita’s summertime tradition since 1935, the historic tournament has a revamped look and entertainment lineup for 2023. In addition to a new logo and rebranding that pays homage to the tournament’s history, the series also has a new director: Katie Woods is the first woman to hold the position.
“The reach that the NBC World Series has in the baseball world is pretty incredible,” Woods said. “You run into people all over the country who immediately know Wichita because of the NBC. They played in it, went to it, or have just heard about the great baseball and innovation that’s come out of the tournament.”
That marriage of baseball tradition with local entertainment is top of mind for this year’s NBC World Series. On August 11, during the tournament’s semi-finals, there will be magicians, Tyler’s Amazing Balancing Act, magical science exhibits in partnership with Exploration Place, and more.
96-year-old Maybelle Blair, a former player with the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (made famous by the movie “A League of Their Own”), will appear at the NBC World Series on August 10 as the tournament celebrates Women in Baseball, as well as the Air Capital of the World on Aviation Night. In addition to playing baseball, Blair was the third female manager for Northrop Aircraft, and both she and her brother played in the NBC World Series in 1941 with his Californiabased Northrop Grumman team.
For fans, the experience has always been baseball — with a twist. In addition to the more than 800 National Baseball Congress players who have gone on to the major leagues (Ozzie Smith and Albert Pujols, to name a few), innovation and fun have been at the forefront. The pitch clock that Major League Baseball instituted in 2023 first appeared in Wichita at the NBC World Series in 1962. There was glo-ball, Gertie the Goose, Baseball Round the Clock, teams from all parts of the country (and world) — all in Wichita. Woods says that, even with a revamped look for 2023, the feel and fun of the NBC will carry over to Eck Stadium.
“A whole new generation of fans are discovering the NBC World Series, 89 years after Hap Dumont had the idea for a tournament here in Wichita,” said Woods. “It truly is an amazing summer tradition for Wichita, and for the baseball world.”
