Bradley Stavinoha Announces Candidacy for District Five Director

I would like to announce my intention to seek reelection as District Five Director. My bio appears here. Please contact me with any questions at 979-793-7411 or 979-739-2386 or email bradley@needvilleinsurance.com. Bradley Stavinoha Lodge 81, Needville ••• Bradley Stavinoha, a devoted family man, community leader, and current District Five Director, hails from Needville, Texas, where he spent his formative years farming cotton and hay. He is a graduate of Needville High School where he left a mark as a linebacker on the 1989 football team that recorded the highest number of wins in Needville’s history. Bradley’s commitment to service was evident early on when he joined the Texas National Guard at just 17 years of age. Here, he attended basic training in the summer before his senior year of high school, later moving on to Advanced Individual Training (AIT) for power generator mechanic school. His military occupational specialty was later switched to an M1A1 tanker. Over his nine years in the National Guard, he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant while serving under Congressman Troy Nehls. His academic journey led him to Wharton County Junior College and later to Texas State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in environmental science with a minor in chemistry. Bradley spent 15 years selling welding supplies and industrial gases be-

fore establishing an independent insurance agency in 1999, a venture he has grown and nurtured since. He is a board member for SPJST life insurance in Temple, Texas, representing the Houston area, and also sits on the board of an assisted living facilities company. Bradley’s contributions to the American Legion are significant. He has served in multiple capacities including Post 350 Commander, adjutant, financial officer, district adjutant, and zone commander. His continued dedication led him to the Legion College in 2002. He is the current 9th district commander. In the wider community, Bradley is also active and highly regarded. His current roles include Assistant Governor and Membership Chair of the Rotary Club, as well as the Rotary Gumbo Fundraiser Chair. He’s an active member of the Knights of Columbus and Czech Heritage Society. Bradley is part of the Fort Bend Historical Society Committee and Needville ISD advisory board. He currently presides over the Needville Chamber of Commerce and is a career and tech advisor for Needville ISD. He was honored as the Needville Citizen of the Year in 2022 and named Fort Bend’s Hometown Hero in 2021. At home, he shares his life with wife Cecilia and their three children. Their daughter, Evan, is currently studying at Texas A&M University. Oldest daughter Baley recently graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in marketing. Don Fruin Announces Candidacy for District Five Director

My name is Don Fruin, and I am announcing my candidacy for the District Five Director’s position that will be voted on at the SPJST Convention to be held in June 2024. My background includes over 25 years as a career life insurance agent, building my own agency. Fourteen years of that time, I have represented SPJST. I have earned numerous awards from companies for my efforts, including two awards as top salesman in District Five, and one companywide top salesman with SPJST. I have involved myself in many other ways as a member of SPJST. I have held the office of alternate director for District Five twice; served as District Five Vice President; Lodge 255, Katy Vice President; and treasurer, vice president, and event coordinator for Lodge 196, Houston-West. My interest in how SPJST operates and is set up to govern

itself, is shown in the fact I have been a convention delegate to the last three conventions. My formal education includes attending the business school at the University of Houston and business management courses at The American Management Association in Chicago. I have also received management training while employed in mid-level management positions with Campbell Soup Co. and Community Coffee Company. My business growth results with Campbell Soup Co. in its central United States region, were in the 5 to 8 percent growth per year for the five-year period. I showed even better growth with Community Coffee, having a growth rate of over 800 percent in eight years. It is my hope to use all that I have learned to improve both the insurance side of SPJST and to move the fraternal arm of the company into a position that is much better known in this area of Texas. I am respectfully asking for your support in becoming the next director to serve on the board for SPJST. To further discuss my plan, please contact me at: 832-651-5388 Email: DFruin@fruinandassociates.com Fraternally, Don Fruin Lodge 196, Houston-West —SPJST—

It’s Your Life

Change your Life Through Optimism

A

s we begin the new year, it is time to look at the world in a more optimistic view. How can we do that? In today’s world, we are experiencing more uncertain and troubling times than ever before. It seems that every time you turn on the TV or look at your computer, there is always more news that just weighs you down. Such an environment can cause people to feel stuck, lost and full of anxiety. The fear of the unknown or what if’s can build up into a dark cloud making people negative in their personal and professional lives. As humans, we sometimes focus on the negative and get lost in that dark cloud that we created. However, just as we have the ability to look at things negatively, we can learn to look at them positively as well. In Martin Seligman’s 22-year study at the University of Pennsylvania, and summarized in his book Learned Optimism, he found that optimism is the most important quality you can develop for personal and professional success and happiness. He found that optimistic people tended to be more effective in almost every area of life. Optimists have four special behaviors. These behaviors may not be natural but can be learned through practice and repetition. 1. Optimists look for the good in every situation. No matter how bad a situation looks from the outside, they always look for something good from it. Not surprisingly, they always seem to find it. 2. Optimists seek to learn from every setback or difficulty. Optimists believe that ‘difficulties come not to obstruct but to instruct.” Obstacles contain valuable lessons you can learn and grow from, and an optimist will seek to find it.

3. Optimists always look for the solution to a problem. Instead of blaming or complaining when things go wrong, they become action-oriented. This means rather than asking “who did wrong?” the response is “what’s the next step?” or “what is the solution?” 4. Optimists think and talk about their goals. They think about what they want and they think about how to reach their goal. Rather than focusing on the past, they seek to look at the future and what they want to accomplish. When you continually visualize your goals and ideals and talk to yourself in a positive manner, you become more focused and energized. You also experience a greater sense of control and personal power. The more positive and motivated you feel, the more eager you are to get started and more determined to keep going. Think about your goals and share them with others. Is your attitude and actions on track to meet with your goals? Resolve to take a few minutes each day to practice these special behaviors. Resolve to make progress rather than make excuses. Over time, you will find yourself become more and more optimistic, which in turn, will grant you greater success in your goals. “Optimism - the doctrine or belief that everything is beautiful, including what is ugly.” —Ambrose Bierce Stay blessed always, Delisle L. Sponsor or ask the Home Office to help sponsor events in your community. Host the SPJST Float in your city or community parade. SPJST needs to be visible in your community, and the Home Office is willing to help you pay for this.

Let a non-profit community organization use your lodge hall for its events. This provides visibility for your lodge, and it lets the community know who you are.

Work with SPJST Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty or your Territory Manager to present seminars or free insurance reviews for all members of the community at your lodge hall or a facility in the community, if you do not have a building. The Home Office will organize and advertise the event. The Home Office will help select the best topic for your community or bring agents to do the free reviews.

Organize a community event, like a fundraiser, food drive, clothing drive, pet food drive, etc. Ask a local business to allow you to set a table in front of their establishment. Many will welcome the opportunity.

Lodge 9, Snook Lodge 18, Elgin: reports on January meeting a resurgence of community The Wednesday, January 3, 2024, and family values in 2024 meeting of SPJST Lodge 9, Snook was called to order by President Donnie Hejl at 6 p.m. Hannah Kovar led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll of officers was called. Minutes from the December meeting were approved. Hall manager, communications, youth club, treasurer, and statewide reports were given. The youth club is working on choosing an activity for all to get together. Under old business, work was completed on the porch, and it looks very good. January birthday includes Bill Orsak on th 10th. The meeting adjourned at 6:51 p.m.

Through the years, SPJST has existed in Elgin, Texas. Sometimes its presence has been one of prominence; sometimes it could hardly be seen. However, the community has always exhibited the same basic principles of caring, helping, and giving back. Based on its desire to

contribute to the family values, SPJST Lodge 18, Elgin is planning a resurgence in its activities. Lodge 18, Elgin was among the original 25 SPJST lodges formed in Texas. Originating with the Czech emigrants, the fraternal organization found strong roots in Elgin. That was in 1897. Today, SPJST includes many ethnicities who all seek those same values. Lodge 18 is home to 440-plus members, aged 0 to 100. The planned resurgence promises to give those folks and many more an op-

portunity to be involved in events that bring fun and companionship to the older folks, the younger ones, and all the ones in between. Events such as potluck dinners, dominoes, skating, festivals, productions, and many others you can only imagine are in the plan. Next Meeting is February 20 If you’re one of the current members – but have lost touch – or someone new who wants to be included, plan to attend the very important meeting at 7 p.m. on

Most of all, a big thank you to the members of Lodge 24 who volunteered their time so selflessly to make the night a great success. Groundhog Day fun and facts

Woodchucks really have nothing to do with wood or chucking. The name stems from an Algonquian name wuchak.

Groundhog Day offers a touch of whimsy during the often bleak midwinter chill. Across the country, eager celebrants await a rascally rodent to determine if there will be six more weeks of winter or if the nation will receive an early reprieve from the cold. It is fun to guess if an early spring is coming, and even more so to rely on a large ground squirrel to play meteorologist. To further enhance the Groundhog Day experience, burrow into these interesting facts about the holiday and the animal itself.

• The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration says Phil has seen his shadow more times than not between 1887 and 2019. Statistically speaking, six more weeks of winter is often the norm.

• The world can thank the Germans for the Groundhog Day tradition. The see-his-shadow concept was adapted from a German Candlemas Day tradition in which clergymen would bless the candles they needed for the cold season. If the candles brought a sunny day, there would be six more weeks of winter. However, clouds and rain signified that winter would end soon. Germans who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1700s brought the custom to America. • Germans once used a hedgehog as their animal forecaster. When relocating to Pennsylvania, groundhogs were used because they were more common than hedgehogs. • Punxsutawney Phil is perhaps most revered for his forecasting abilities. However, more than a dozen states have their own prognosticating groundhogs. These include Buckeye Chuck in Ohio, Birmingham Bill in Alabama and General Beauregard Lee in Georgia. • Phil has been predicting the weather at Gobbler’s Knob for more than 130 years. This is quite a feat considering groundhogs typically live between six and eight years. Folklore indicates Phil sips a magical drink that will prolong his life for seven more years. • Phil’s full name is Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather-Prophet Extraordinary. • Groundhogs also are called woodchucks and are a species of rodent known as marmots. They typically weigh between 12 and 15 pounds.

• Groundhogs prefer to live in open country or at woodland edges. They are never far from a burrow made in welldrained soil. Most have summer and winter dens. • Groundhogs are adept at predicting

the arrival of spring, just not in the way people have come to know from Groundhog Day. Since they hibernate, when groundhogs emerge from their burrows, it's a sure sign spring is on its way. • The 1993 movie Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray helped solidify Punxsutawney Phil as a national hero and household name. Since then, crowds numbering as high as 30,000 have made the pilgrimage to see Phil in person. Groundhog Day brings some levity to an otherwise uneventful time of year. —SPJST—

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

THE DAY THAT TEXAS AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC TOUCHED by Brian Vanicek, President and CEO I’ve heard “home” described of that intangible feeling that you get in a location, a sense of peace, joy from loved ones in an environment where everyone knows they are welcome. That is exactly the way I felt on the afternoon and early evening of Tuesday, December 5. That’s the day that our SPJST Holiday Tour of the Czech Republic arrived in the town of Hrusky. Hrusky is a village and a municipality in the Breclav District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 1,600 residents. By Texas standards it is a very old village. The first written mention of Hrusky is from 1368. is located about 31 miles southeast of Brno and has a population of approximately 1,600 residents. More than 90 percent of Czech vineyards lie in Moravia, where the cultivation and harvesting of grapes are among the main components of the local economy. The Hrusky countryside is famous for its wine production. A Rare and Violent Tornado On the evening of June 24, 2021, a rare violent and deadly multiple-vortex tornado struck several villages in the Hodonín and Břeclav districts of the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, killing six people and injuring at least 200 others. The tornado struck seven municipalities, with the worst damage in the villages of Hru%ky, Moravská Nová Ves, Mikul'ice and Lu&ice. In response, the Czech Moravian Benevolence Fund was organized by The SPJST Foundation to provide rebuilding and humanitarian assistance in the areas hardest hit. The Foundation set a goal of raising $25,000. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals, businesses, Texas Czech heritage and fraternal societies, that goal was thoroughly eclipsed. After consulting with community leaders in the region, the town of Hrusky was designated as a deserving recipient for the more than $40,000 that was raised.

It was for that reason — when we initiated planning the SPJST tour of the Czech Republic — we included Hrusky on the itinerary. What we didn’t plan on was the hero’s welcome that we received from the people of Hrusky and surrounding area. It was as heart-warming, as it was humbling, as it was inspiring! Day Six Unfolds Following an exquisite breakfast at the Premium Wellness & Wine Hotel, our morning started out an insider’s tour of the ancient church and crypt of St. Vaclav in Znojmo and a glimpse of the Znojmo underground. I say “glimpse” because really how much can you see of a 17-mile underground labyrinth of corridors, tunnels and shafts in 90 minutes? That’s another story in itself! By mid-afternoon, we were on our way down the 55-mile, snow-covered

roadway to Hrusky — a cozy 90-minute commute of newfound friends sharing fresh memories and cheer as we traversed the beautful Moravian winter landscape. Upon entering Hrusky it was inevident that the city had been so thoroughly in shambles just 24 months before. Instead, we saw one neat and tidy snow-covered house after another along Breclavska and then Hlavni streets which led to our meeting point in front of the Základní $kola (Elementary School). Welcome to Hrusky! Our Texas travelers were warmly greeted on the street by Hrusky Mayor Jana Filipovi$ová, Deputy Mayor of Hrusky Marek Babisz, and Regional Authority of the South Moravian Region Pavol Foltin. The three officials were flanked by several teachers from the elementary school and the nearby Mateřská %kola Hru%ky — Hrusky kindergarten. Our hosts then proceeded to take us on tours of the two schools as well as Kostel sv. Bartoloměje (St. Bartholomew’s Church) all of which were damaged and had to be largely reconstructed after the tornado. As our hosts

explained SPJST Foundation Funds helped to provide the funding for these and the many other rebuilding projects which had transpired over the preceding two years. Our final stop in Hrusky — the grand finale — took place at Dolní Kr'ma (Lower Tavern), the town meeting hall and venue for events such as celebrations, wedding receptions and banquets. It had also been rebuilt from the ground up. It was here that we were blown away by hospitality of our hosts and townspeople. The city had laid out a svacina fit for a king and queen. Carved ham, schnitzel trays, sausage, tenderloin, pans of bread, vegetable trays, fruit and desserts. And, of course, there was wine from the local vineyards, beer and soft drinks. There was lively music too. The local Hrusky youth ensemble — an eight-piece performing group dressed in regional kroj — entertained the assembly with folk tunes played on dulcimer, bass fiddle and violins. Their performance was so enjoyable that we are now looking for ways to bring them and their adult chaperones to Texas — perhaps as early as the 2024 fall festival season.

The Hrusky welcome celebration for SPJST tour members included a scrumptious svacina, music, holiday cheer and a visit from Svaty Mikulas and his angelic and devilish companions. Merry Christmas! The reception included a rousing visit by Svaty Mikulas, trailed by three devils and an angel — all classic Czech Christmas personages. Keep in mind, thanks to fortuitous timing, we were in Hrusky on December 5 — Svaty Mikulas (Saint Nicholas) Day in the Czech Republic! The day marks the start of Christmas for Czech people. Mikulá#, who is represented as a bearded bishop,

visits the children of the Czech Republic with two friends in tow, an angel and a devil — and in our case — three devils! If the children are good, the angel gives them sweets or candy. But if they’re bad, the devil threatens to put them in their sack and take them to the netherworld. Thank goodness, all of our SPJST travelers were good and each received a souvenir gift basket from Svaty Mikulas.

An eight-piece youth ensemble group dressed in kroj entertained the assembly with folk tunes played on dulcimer, bass fiddle and violins. We’re hoping to bring them to Texas to perform in the fall! Mayor Filipovi$ová and Regional Authority Foltin further extended their hospitality to the group with presentations of wine and books which detailed the history of Hrusky and of the tornado and the city’s rebuilding. In exchange, SPJST representatives presented our Czech friends with tokens of appreciation including a large Texas flag which had been flown over the Texas State Capitol by the Texas

Legislature on Czech National Day, October 28, 2023. Home Away from Home Thanks to the wonderful people of Hrusky, I believe that every member of our group will have lasting memories of the day that the great distance which exists between the State of Texas and the Czech Republic came within touching distance.

Connecting With Family and Friends “Connecting with Family and Friends” was the theme of the 2023 SPJST Holiday Tour of the Czech Republic. It’s a theme that proved prophetic. Our touring family is pictured here with our grand hostess Hrusky Mayor Jana Filipovi ová, pictured second from left in the front row.

Lodge 47, Seaton youth ready to celebrate birthday Dear Vestnik Readers, Happy New Year! I hope 2024 will be a good year. My birthday is coming up very soon. I hope I get good presents. Next weekend, I get to pick the restaurant of my choice for my birthday. I will make sure to pick a good one. I enjoyed Christmas very much. I got

Monday, January 22, 2024 a lot of good presents. We also had very good food. We had fried chicken, noodles, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. I enjoyed it. The New Year’s Eve dance was also very fun. I worked in the kitchen almost the whole night. I also sold baked goods. We made a lot of money. After that, we rang in the New Year! We have to go back to school now, sadly. Hope you have a good month. Fraternally, Travis Ordogne, age 11 —SPJST—

Lodge 47, Seaton youth to play first basketball game Dear Vestnik Readers, Welcome, 2024! I have one New Year’s resolution. It is to keep my room

clean. I also have a New Year’s goal. My goal is to do 100 push-ups every single day of the year. It might take a while though. One of the reasons I want to do 100 push-ups every day is just so I can improve on my compound bow. I got my compound bow as a Christmas gift. Next week, I have my first basketball game. My team sponsor is Perry Office Plus so that means that my basketball team name is Perry Office Plus. That was my team’s name last year, too. I have three friends on my team. My friend’s names are Cooper, Austin, and Luke. I play my basketball games at RWYC, which stands for Ralph Wilson Youth Club. I have a bunch of family coming over to see my first basketball game next week. I cannot wait! I will let you know how we did. I guess I am going to wrap this letter now! Sincerely, Andrew Ordogne, age 8 —SPJST—

Rare pygmy hippo, Mikolas, delights spectators in Czech zoo debut A rare male pygmy hippopotamus calf that was born in a Czech zoo debuted his first photoshoot recently to the delight of spectators. He is considered a valuable addition to the conservation efforts of the endangered species. Born December 1, 2023, the hippo was named Mikolas and has joined two female and one male pygmy hippos in the Dvur Kralove Zoo, located about 75 miles east of Prague, said Helena Hubackova, a spokeswoman for the park.

Texas Czech Genealogical Society Website: txczgs.org Promoting the study of the genealogy of the particular group of people known as “Texas Czechs.” For membership: Marie Dulak 979-324-7871

Mikolas could be seen exploring his indoor enclosure with his mom, Malaya, closely watching over. Pygmy hippos are native to swamps and rainforests in western Africa. It’s estimated only about 2,500 still live in the wild. Weighing up to nearly 600 pounds, pygmy hippos are solitary and considered less dangerous than common hippos; but they can get wild at times. A zookeeper in Dvur Kralove was seriously injured by one in 2012 and had to be treated at an intensive care unit. https://www.foxnews.com/world/rare-pygmy-hippo-mikolas-delights-spectators-czech-zoo-debut
