Summertime is YAD time!

This year’s Youth Achievement Day season kicked off in a big way

at Lodge 92, Fort Worth with the District Three YAD held Sunday, June 24. The hall was filled with hundreds of eager youth and supportive family members and friends. Following craft registration and a delicious meal served by Lodge 92, the crowd was entertained by amazing talent acts. The judges must have had a difficult task determining the winners because every talent was great. Thanks to the youth for a dynamic show. And, the crafts — wow! They were really good. So were the royalty speeches. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the event. To all of the parents, youth leaders, and Lodge 92 volunteers: thanks for all you did to make the day so successful for the youth of SPJST. Special thanks to District Three Youth Counselor Bessie Petr and her assistants Lynda Novak and Diana Engelke for all of their work to coordinate the day. Camp Wallachia Recently, I visited with SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC) Consultant Sherrie Kubala Watkins. She shared plans for Camp Wallachia to be located on Granger Lake at Friendship Park. Sherrie is a member of Lodge 92, Fort Worth, and she is very enthusiastic about the project. Next week’s Vestnik will feature complete information about the ENC and its current progress. Spelling to Get into Heaven Thanks to Otis and Jackie Beck of Lodge 177, Academy for sharing this. A woman arrived at the Gates of Heaven. While she was waiting for Saint Peter to greet her, she peeked

through the gates. She saw a beautiful banquet table. Sitting all around were her parents and all the other people she had loved and who had died before her. They saw her and began calling greetings to her, “Hello! How are you? We’ve been waiting for you! Good to see you.” When Saint Peter came by, the woman said to him, “This is such a wonderful place. How do I get in?” “You have to spell a word,” Saint Peter told her. “Which word?” the woman asked. “Love.” The woman correctly spelled “love,” and Saint Peter welcomed her into Heaven. Several years later, Saint Peter came to the woman and asked her to watch the Gates of Heaven for him that day. While the woman was guarding the Gates of Heaven, her husband arrived. “I’m surprised to see you,” the woman said. “How have you been?” “Oh, I’ve been doing pretty well since you died,” her husband told her. “I won the multi-state lottery, and a little later, I married the beautiful young nurse who took care of you while you were ill. I sold the little house you and I lived in and bought a huge mansion. And, my new wife and I traveled all around the world. We were on vacation in Cancun, and I went water skiing today. I fell and hit my head, and here I am. What a bummer! How do I get in?” “It’s very simple dear, all you have to do is spell a word,” the woman told him. “Which word?” her husband asked. “Czechoslovakia.” Happy Fourth of July! —SPJST—

State FAC encourages SPJST Museum visit Dear Lodge FAC, Summer time is travel time. Looking for a place to go? How about the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM)? Through artifacts and photos, the SPJST LAM provides an intimate look into the family life of Texans of Czech descent in the last century. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. It is closed on weekends and holidays except by appointment. Group and weekend tours are available and are booked through the SPJST LAM. For more information, call the museum at (800) 727-7578. Little Golden Books To date, SPJST members have collected and donated many Little Golden Books for Ronald McDonald Houses of Texas. Through October, Texas fraternal organizations will be collecting Little Golden Books to present to Ronald McDonald Houses across Texas. The Ronald McDonald House is a temporary home away from home where the families of children being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses or trauma, reside while the child receives treatment at a nearby hospital or medical treatment center. In some cases, such as when a child receives outpatient therapy, the youngster can spend time with his family in the non-institutional atmosphere of the House.

You may send your books to: Little Golden Books Collection Drive SPJST Home Office 520 North Main Street, Temple, Texas 76501 Or you may call your district director, your state field representative, or me and we will be happy to pick up your books and deliver them to the Home Office. Czech Museum . . . So Near, and Yet So Far Away I

n 1954, when several Czech organizations (SPJST, RVOS, KJZT, KZT, and others) got together and formed a committee to discuss building a museum to honor the Czech culture and heritage, no one imagined the project as it is today. Or perhaps they did. There was a dream to have a separate building for the museum. As with many committees, there was a lot of talking, but discussions dwindled and the project was all but forgotten. By 1963, the museum initiative had lost its momentum, but there was still a desire to preserve books written in the Czech language and those pertain-

ing to Czech history. Nick Morris, then editor of the Vestnik, began writing articles about a library and soliciting donations of books. The first donations came from West attorney George Kacir, and then other donations began coming in. Today, there are over 30,000 books in the library. Many are in the Czech language, and there is the largest Czech genealogy collection in the state of Texas. Artifacts also arrived. In 1971, with the opening of the present SPJST Home Office, the Library, Archives, and Museum (LAM) had its first “real” home on the ground floor of the edifice. Over time,

Please Help Us Meet The Challenge! The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has been offered a $200,000 challenge grant to help with the renovation of the Hanus Building to house the Czech Heritage Museum. VĚSTNÍK as donations kept coming in, the museum outgrew its area. The basement of the building was renovated to provide an area which was 50 percent larger than the ground floor space, and the museum moved into its present location. The museum is constrained to being open only during SPJST business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. There are no weekend hours, and visitors must access the museum via the business office lobby. In the late 1990s, supporters of the museum again began to dream about a separate building to house the accumulated treasures in its possession so that they could be appreciated by larger numbers of people and about making the museum a separate entity. In 2000, it was decided by the members of SPJST that the LAM would separate from SPJST so that it could grow and be able to offer educational and research opportunities to a larger community. The SPJST LAM elected their own board of directors and began the process of finding a suitable building to house the museum and raising monies to pay for it. In 2001, a historic building, adjacent to the SPJST Home Office, became available and, with a generous donation from Louis and Oleta Hanus of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, was purchased for the future museum location. At the time, there were three businesses occupying the building which continued to operate until 2006. An architect was hired to determine what renovations were needed to restore the building to its original splendor and make it a viable home for the LAM. The architect did some conceptual drawings and helped establish a budget for the project. The estimated budget is $628,000. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the LAM was able to begin raising funds to begin the restoration of the Hanus building, and in 2006, was offered a challenge grant from a local foundation. The foundation offered to give $200,000 to the organization if it was able to raise another $400,000 by December 31, 2006. A little over $100,000 was given by the end of 2006. With the deadline approaching and only a quarter of the monies donated, the deadline was generously extended to 2007. Patrons, students, and researchers are anxiously awaiting the new, more accessible spaces. The museum plans include more library and research space, a small theater, temporary exhibit space, a museum store, a place for lunch, and an outdoor learning center. The treasures in the collection

will have better and safer display space. Also, with the move to the new building, the museum will be able to be open on the weekends and later in the evenings. It will be a stand alone area that is more convenient for all. At the present time, over $315,000 has been raised to meet the challenge and there is only a “little bit” to go. Much like the last five pounds when you are on a diet, this $85,000 can be the toughest part to get. The Board of Directors of the LAM (wisely) hesitates to begin construction on the new museum home until all of the monies are in place. Several grant applications have been submitted, and the City of Temple is considering supporting this project with a $25,000 gift. Grants are becoming rarer, so the LAM is reaching out to friends and supporters to attain its goal. All donors to the building fund will be permanently recognized at the entrance to the museum and with larger gifts, there are naming possibilities within the museum, such as outdoor learning area, theater, and display areas. This is a wonderful way to honor a person or organization. Any contributions can be made to: SPJST LAM P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 or call Sandi Wicker, LAM director, at (254) 899-2935 for more information. —SPJST—

The

Lodge 9, Snook Member Ella Klechka Achieves Grand Age of 96

SPJST congratulates Sister Ella Klechka, a member of Lodge Lodge 9, Snook, who celebrated her 96th birthday on May 30, 2007. Sister Ella is now entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessm e n t s required. Ella Klechka was born on May 30, 1911 in Merle, Texas to Joe and Teresa Janac, who were from Czechoslovakia. Ella’s siblings included Edvin “Ginger” Janac, Tracy Jakubik, Joe Janac, and Albert Janac, all deceased. She married Raymond Klechka in 1944 in Houston, Texas. Raymond passed away in 1989. The couple was blessed with children Raymond Robert, Jr. and wife Sharon, Arnold Martin, and Jimmy Joe. Ella resides in Caldwell. The article below describes Ella’s 95th birthday celebration. It is from the June 18 to 24, 2006, column “Lizzy on the Move” by Elizabeth Scott. Last weekend, Robin and I had the pleasure of celebrating a momentous occasion with part of our extended family—four dozen family members and close friends honored “Mama” Ella Klechka on her 95th birthday at CJ’s Barbecue in Bryan. Born in Snook, Texas, on May 30, 1911, Mama Klechka has always been a ‘trend-setter’ at any age. You may remember the story we wrote about her introducing authentic kolaches to the students at Texas A&M when she was employed by Dr. Fred Dollar. But we discovered during her party that she learned to drive at 45, learned to swim at 55, and rode her first motorcycle at 65. She explained to us, “As I did them, I didn’t care what age I was!” Literally ‘pretty in pink’, Mama Klechka, who amazingly looks younger every time I see her, told me, “I just put on everything I have and hope I didn’t overdo it.” She added, “Most importantly, today absolutely nothing hurts.”

Mama Klechka pointed out that two of her three sons Raymond and his wife Sharon and son Jimmy had arranged the event. Both granddaughters, Alicia and Tammy, were there with their husbands and their adorable children, two of the five great-grandchildren. Mama Klechka explained that her two grandsons were unable to attend. “My family is spread from Bryan-College Station to Caldwell and Magnolia and from

Oklahoma City to Colorado.” She continued, “They told me there’d be a lot of people here, but this is just wonderful!” Among those family members attending, we met cousins Randy and Mary Landreth and Barbara Lebow and her mother, “Aunt” Jane. Then, we had the treat of breaking bread with one of my favorite lifelong friends Dr. Frances Kimbrough whose family, like mine, has been

here for several generations. One of Mama Klechka’s most favorite surprises was the arrival of her cousin Ella from Danbury who will also celebrate her 95th birthday in June. Having been years since they’d seen each other, the two ladies spent the afternoon chatting and giggling like schoolgirls. —SPJST—

Mama Klechka’s Recipes These are some tried and true specialties that Mama Klechka has made for years. Mama Klechka’s Kolechi 1/2 large cake yeast 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup lukewarm milk 3 eggs 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, melted 4 cups flour Combine yeast into mixture of salt, sugar, butter and milk; mix until blended. Add flour and eggs alternately, mixing well after each addition. Refrigerate overnight. Nut Filling 1 pound finely ground walnuts 3 eggs 1/2 cup honey 1/3 cup butter Combine all ingredients, mixing well. Shape dough into six loaves; press an indention into top of each loaf. Spoon filling into indention; let dough rise for 1 hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Yield 6 loaves. Mama Klechka’s Molasses Cookies 1 cup lard 1 cup molasses 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 teaspoon ginger 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon flour enough to make thick dough 1 teaspoon soda mixed with a little hot water 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds 1/2 teaspoon cloves Mix, roll out, and cut cookies with cookie cutter. Bake at 350 degrees.

R.V. Rays Petit Fours 6 eggs 1 1/2 cups sifted flour 3 tablespoons cold water 1 1/2 cups sifted granulated sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice grated rind from one lemon 3/4 teaspoon vanilla 16 egg whites 1/2 teaspoon salt Beat egg yolks until light and lemon colored. Add sugar very slowly, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating constantly. Beat at least 10 minutes and add the cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating constantly. Stir in lemon juice and rind, add vanilla. Beat egg whites with 1/4 teaspoon salt until stiff but not dry. Place the beaten egg whites on top of the yolk mixture. Over this sift the flour. Do not stir, but carefully cut and fold in the egg whites and flour. Pour the batter into two unbuttered 9-inch cake pans and bake in a slow oven for 1 hour without opening the door. Slow oven is approximately 250 degrees. When the cake is done, cool it in the pan, upside down on a cake rack. If the cake rises above the sides of the pans, turn the pan upside down and support the edges on cups. When the cake is perfectly cold, loosen the sides with a spatula if necessary. When it is perfectly cold, cut the base for the Petit Fours with a 1 1/2 inch round cutter. Butter Cream for Filling 8 ounces shortening 2 pounds powdered sugar 1/4 ounce vanilla extract 8 ounces butter 1/4 pint egg whites Partly cream shortening and butter, add sifted sugar and vanilla extract. Cream thorough-

ly together. Continue creaming while the whites are gradually incorporated. Pipe the Butter Cream onto the Sponge Cake with a number 9 pastry tube. Fondant Icing 6 ounces shortening 1/4 ounce salt 8 ounces water 8 ounces corn syrup Bring to boil and remove from heat. Add 3 pounds, 8 ounces sifted powdered sugar. Stir thoroughly. Let this mixture cool to 115 degrees before pouring over Petit Fours. Be sure the entire Petit Four is covered. To decorate Petit Fours with flowers, use the Buttercream flavored with Raspberry and Rum flavoring, tinted with yellow, pink, and green food coloring. Mama’s Rolls (yield 100) 1 quart and 3/4 cup water 2 3/4 cups evaporated milk 4 eggs each 1 tablespoon and 1 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 3/4 ounces dry yeast 1 1/3 cups corn oil 1 pound 6 ounces sugar 6 pounds 15 ounces flour 1 1/2 tablespoon corn oil Combine water, milk, corn oil and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Mix on low speed for 5 minutes. Add sugar and salt; mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Add flour and mix on low speed until moistened. Add yeast and mix on medium speed until dough leaves sides of bowl, remaining oil add to bottom of bowl just before dough is removed to prevent sticking. Remove from bowl, place on an oiled table and work into a smooth ball. Divide into 100 equal portions. Proof until doubled in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

Joe Brezina transferring from SPJST Lodge 142, Houston to Lodge 1. Amanda Edwards of Fayetteville is also a new member. Unfinished business included following up with Josh Vitek regarding kitchen repairs, adding on porch to the kitchen area, putting in drainage from the ball field, cut out drive to control drainage better, and add gravel as needed and push to the road. These suggestions were put in the form of a motion by Debby Pflughaupt and seconded by Rose Rohde. The motion passed. A separate electric meter is needed for the baseball scoreboard which is being provided to the SPJST Lodge 1 Youth Club by Bluebonnet Electric as well as a speaker/announcement system. Ronnie Pflughaupt will contact Josh Vitek and Billy Wasut regarding this project. President Fritsch also discussed the small storage building which is now being used by both the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce and SPJST. There being no further business, Rose Rohde made a motion to adjourn which was seconded by Cassie Wessels. The motion carried. Irene Polansky, Secretary —SPJST—

Ennis Sewing Circle The Ennis Sewing Circle met on June 14, 2007, with 16 members and one guest—Julius Podhrasky. President Sadie Kubin called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and a moment of silence was held for all our lost soldiers. It was announced that June 14 was Flag Day. Libbie Vrla had on white pants and a white tee-shirt with a flag on the front. That was very nice. Vlasta Laznovsky read the minutes, and Lil Kosarek gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read. Sylvia Laznovsky reported the Junior Sokol gymnast group made well on the quilt raffle. I’m sorry to say Lisa Greger from the Vestnik office didn’t win. Maggie Holy from Ennis was the lucky winner. Last Sunday at church, Maggie sat behind us, and I just had to turn around and congratulate her. She was so happy and excited that it was so pretty. Someone talked with Geraldine Zhanel, and she saw the picture of the quilt in the Vestnik. How pretty she thought it was and wants to make one just like it. Lil Kosarek has started more squares for next year’s quilt. She thinks it will be even prettier. I’m sure she will be bringing squares soon for us to sew.

VĚSTNÍK We were happy to see Eleanora Pelzel after her knee surgery. She is doing really well. She thanked everyone for all her cards, phone calls, and kindness shown her during her recovery. We were also glad to see Dorothy Booth. She had a cracked knee and is also doing well. We missed you both since both of you are quilters. Sunshine Lady Eleanora announced our June birthday celebrants—Mildred Krajca, Marie Vrla, Sylvia Laznovsky, and Lil Laznovsky. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Marie and Sylvia. Dorothy Prachyl reported attending Bernice and Edward Rejcek’s 50th wedding anniversary. Annie Vrana, Bernice’s mother and our member, was there in a wheelchair. How nice and happy she seemed. Dorothy also read a couple of funnies from a paper. I can’t remember what they were, but I remember we all laughed. Thanks, Dorothy. We needed that. Linda Waldo, Sidney Bridewell’s daughter, reminded everyone to be very careful of mosquito bites. Her husband is a doctor in Dallas, and there already have been two cases of West Nile. They don’t tell you that on television. Be very careful. We were happy to have Kay Lynn Kovar join us now that school is out. We missed Ella Mae Zmolek. She sent word that she was very busy and unable to attend. Pat Fowler was busy getting ready for her son Michael’s wedding in Tyler. Rosie Bednar comes with Pat so she was absent. I didn’t hear from Esther Cunningham. I hope she is not sick—probably on a trip. Betty Landsfeld had a doctor’s appointment. Geraldine Zhanel is back in the hospital. Let’s keep her and all our other members in our prayers. We miss you all. It was good to see Bertha Podhrasky. We quilted the beautiful Dutch doll quilt for Dorothy Prachyl. I must tell you the story about the Dutch doll squares. Several years back when Victoria Novy was still with us, Eleanora would pick her up and take her places. One day, she asked Eleanora to come in because she wanted to show her something. She had a big stack of Dutch doll squares made and no one in her family wanted them. She didn’t even think it would be enough for a quilt. She asked Eleanora if she wanted them. Eleanora started counting, and there were 86 squares. Can you imagine? She was tickled to get them. She gave Dorothy Prachyl enough for a

I feel she was looking and smiling down on us quilting. Dorothy Prachyl thanked all the quilters: Eleanora Pelzel, Dorothy Booth, Dorothy Kudrna, Bessie Laznovsky, Kay Lynn Kovar, and Georgie Morales. It quilted very easily. Marie Vrla brought the door prize, and it was won by Dorothy Prachyl. We had our little gift exchange which is always fun. Thank you everyone for the delicious lunch. As always, I ate too

much. My sister Libbie shamed me, but it was all very good. You just have to taste everything. Thank you to the clean-up crew. President Sadie announced our next meeting will be July 12. We will not quilt, but will have elephant sale and show and tell. We will meet around 10 a.m., have the sale, lunch, short meeting, and show and tell. The show and tell does not have to be old items just things you want to show and talk about. We will not have a door prize and the little gift exchange. So remember July 12. Bring items to sell, items to show, covered dish for lunch, and lots of money to buy.

The past couple of years have brought about many challenges to our freedom and way of life as Americans. On July 4, as we celebrate the birth of our country’s freedom, we realize more than ever just how precious that freedom is. As Americans, we proudly salute the efforts of our country’s men and women in uniform, who bravely fight to secure the liberty and way of life we hold so dear. Their efforts serve not only to protect us, but to protect our children, grandchildren and many future generations to come. This Independence Day, we celebrate the birth of our great country with renewed enthusiasm, respect and thankfulness.

We are so very proud to be Americans.

State Youth Director: year is off to a great start

Dear Youth Leaders, We’re off to a great start with our 2007-2008 SPJST youth year! During the month of June alone we have experienced and enjoyed Leaders-InTraining (LIT) Retreat at YMCA Hamman Ranch, Youth Achievement Days in Districts Three and Five, and two great camps in Districts Six and Seven. That’s in addition to all of the chaperone training and local lodge activities that have also been taking place. LIT Retreat Our annual Leaders-In-Training Retreat June 1 through June 3 provided a great opportunity for our older SPJST youth club members to come out and have fun and acquire some valuable skills. Thanks for your posi-

I have never been to what felt like a backyard rodeo before. That was great! Thanks to all of the LITs and chaperones for doing their part in keeping the cabins neat and tidy the whole time we were at camp. I believe one of the best things about LIT retreat this year was the fact that our chaperones were able to participate and get to know the LITs better since the YMCA staff helped run the program for us. I hope that everyone had a good time, and the training that the LITs received this year will serve them well at their camps. Days are in progress. Please refer to the following schedule for your District YAD. Youth leaders, please note that YAD cards are due to your DYC 20 days before your district’s YAD. Please call your DYC for more information. There have been some questions about what is appropriate for the talent competition at YAD. In order to be fair to all participants, we will be using the rating system that the Motion Picture Association of America uses. All talent needs to have a “G” rating. The following statement is taken from the rule book, and the next tells about the rating system. If you have any questions, contact your District Youth Counselor. Talent and talent costumes must be in good taste and age appropriate. The DYC at District YAD (State Youth Director at State YAD) will determine talent and talent costume appropriateness. Talent must be age appropriate and not offensive to the audience. What is Deemed Appropriate? The audience at YAD ranges from small infants to grandparents, so all talent should be rated “G”. According to the Motion Picture Association Of America a G-Rated movie is defined as: A film which contains nothing in theme, language, nudity and sex, violence, etc. that

Wednesday, July 4, 2007 would, in the view of the Rating Board, be offensive to parents whose younger children view the film. The G rating is not a certificate of approval nor does it signify a children’s film.

Some snippets of language may go beyond polite conversation, but they are common everyday expressions. No stronger words are present in Grated films. The violence is at a minimum. Nudity and sex scenes are not present, nor are there any drug use content. It will be the responsibility of the youth leader to make sure that the talent from their lodges has a “G” rating.

Flood Safety

Name__________________________________________________________________ Age______________ Lodge______________

Since it has been raining so much recently, Dave decided to learn how to be safe in a flood. Please help him be ready by filling in the blanks and answering the questions below.

Flash floods are the number one weather-related killer in the United States. Nearly half of flash flood deaths are auto related. When the rain starts and doesn’t look like it’s going to end, listen to the radio and television for the latest information and instructions for your area. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH means a flood is possible for your area.

A FLASH FLOOD WARNING means flooding is taking place in your area or will soon. Before a Flood • Have a disaster plan. • Prepare a disaster supplies kit for your home and car. Include a first aid kit, canned food, can opener, bottled water, batteryoperated radio, flashlight, protective clothing and written instructions on how to turn off electricity, gas, and water.

During a Flood • Move to a safe area quickly. • Move to higher ground, like the highest floor of your home. • Avoid areas subject to sudden flooding like low spots and canyons. • Avoid already flooded areas. If a flowing stream of water is above your ankles stop, turn around and go the other way. • Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. The depth of the water is not obvious and the road may be washed away. • If your car stalls, leave it and seek higher ground. Rapidly rising water may engulf the car, pick it up and sweep it away. • Kids should never play around high water, storm drains or viaducts. • Be cautious at night because it’s harder to see flood dangers. • If told to evacuate, do so immediately. After a Flood • Boil drinking water. • Electrical equipment should be checked and dried before use.

Lodge 25, Ennis youth wins at District Three YAD Lodge 25, Ennis youth invites members to YAD show and tell Dear Readers, We will be having our show and tell at the next meeting on July 12. Come see our group talent and our projects. I won second place in needlework and third place in handicrafts. This year, there was a lot of people to compete against in every category. Most of the stuff that won was from Lodge 25, I think. I kept hearing Bessie say, “Lodge 25 won again.” That was kind of funny. I’m glad our lodge is so talented! See our members at the next meeting and all my friends at camp next month! Fraternally, Dustin Motley —SPJST—

Dear Readers, Youth Achievement Day is over. I won lots of prizes. I won first place in sewing; second place on our group talent; and third place on my individual talent. I think this year, the kolaches were the hardest because we have never made them before, and according to Momma, we never will again. I’m kind of glad YAD is over because we don’t have to worry about our projects anymore and practice—practice—practice, except when we have to show them at the adult meeting in July. The next big thing to come up is camp, and I am really looking forward to that. Last year was my first year, and I was kind of scared at first. But I know what is going to happen this year, and I am very excited. Come see us at the adult meeting in July to see what we entered at YAD and also see our talent acts. Hoelscher Haus: Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum receives blessing, dedicates memorial flag pole Spring flowers, roses, and geraniums were in full bloom on the morning of May 19, 2007, as early morning risers made a trip to the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center (TCHCC) in La Grange to attend the blessing of the Hoelscher Haus— Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum (PLCTM) and the dedication of the memorial flag pole in memory of John F. and Annie Belcik Kaluza. The 25-foot flag pole and the United States and Texas flags were donated by members of the Kaluza family. Sister Estelle Bohac, Gladys Thruman, Pauline Trefny, and granddaughter Lorine Christ made the donation. Pauline Trefny, daughter of John F. and Annie Kaluza, read a moving dedication in memory of John F. Kaluza who emigrated to the United States at Ellis Island in New York, New York, in 1887. John F. was born in Tetowa, Polonia, on May 18, 1880, to Frank and Elizabeth Kaluza. Polka Lovers Club of Texas Museum—Hoelscher Haus President Willie Bohuslav welcomed the large group of over 150 to the celebration and introduced Father Joe Hybner who gave the morning prayer. Father Hybner gave the rite of the Blessing of the Museum. Joyce Bohuslav and Father Hybner paid respect to deceased PLCTM Charter member James T. Bond, who had passed away on April 20, 2007. Following a touching eulogy, a cross imprinted balloon was released that drifted toward the heavens and slowly disappeared. Cathleen Noska gathered volunteers around the May pole for the traditional May pole dance. The music of the Blue Skirt Waltz played as eight dancers, each holding a different color ribbon, waltzed around the pole. In order to accommodate all who wished to take part in the colorful dance, a second group was organized. Following the ceremony, refreshments were served, and music for a
