FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Business Guidelines. If we may be allowed to speak, we desire to state that we hold these truths to be selfevident: that the greatest asset of a man or a business is the reputation for fair dealing; that the good will of the employed is just as desirable as the good will of the trade; that all the advertising in the world will not create a permanent demand for an inferior product; that success in business is more often won by men who are steady, conscientious pluggers than by the brilliant on-again-off-again boys; that common sense is the rarest commodity on the market; that all of us know more than any one of us; therefore, let us not fight each other, but rather cooperate; that the prizes in this world go to those who are orderly, industrious, fair and temperate. • Permanent Life Insurance. How does the level premium of a permanent life insurance policy work? The premium is based on the average Mortality risk in life-long insurance coverage for a large number of people, all starting at the same age. This means the average premium for lifelong protection must be higher than is

needed to cover the mortality risk in the early years, but is lower than would otherwise •be required in later years. Part of each, premium payment during the early years is used to build reserves that offset the higher mortality in later years. This reserve fund brings about the savings or investment-like features of permanent life insurance. Until the money is needed to meet the life insurance company's obligations to you and your family, it is put to work through sound investments, generally in high-quality bonds or mortgage loans. Earnings from the investments help to make policy reserves grow. (The Institute of Life Insurance estimates that, if it were not for investment earnings, the cost of a typical straight life insurance policy would run about 60 per cent higher). The reserve is reflected in the increasing cash value of your policy, which is regulated by law and guaranteed in the policy. Besides the portion of each premium that is added to the cash value, and amount is also added each year from the company's investment earnings. The yearly increases are calculated like compound interest on a savings account. The cash value is an integral part of your life insurance protection and

cannot be withdrawn or separated from it if your policy is to remain in force. For this reason, the yearly additions to cash value as a result of investment earnings are not subject to income tax unless you should cash in your policy — and then only if you get back more than you paid in. This can be a significant factor in building an estate or accumulating a retirement fund. When Does Life Begin? In its clay, one of the best sellers among nonfiction books was "Life Begins at Forty" by Walter Pitkin. The eagerness of the public to own this book indicates that the majority of people in their 40s are perplexed about their future. I don't think Pitkin proved that life begins at 40 any more than at 20 or 50. Life begins every day, and the future of any individual is fairly definitely indicated long before he reaches 40. In my opinion, life may be said to begin at 40 in a sense not suggested by Pitkin. By the time a man is 40, he should have built up a philosophy of life that should be his most priceless possession. Without such a philosophy, riches, if he has them, will be a mockery, and poverty will be unsupportable. But if he has come to understand that strain and not stability is the

Wednesday, April 24, 1968 foremost aspect of civilization, he will cease to expect from life something that is never offered. He will meet each day fearlessly and will extract from it what he can: At 40 he will enjoy compensations that were denied at 20. That life is worth living at any age and in any circumstance is eloquently proven by the reluctance of the overwhelming mass of mankind to leave it. Not even the promises of the rich rewards of the life beyond induce very many to hasten their departure.

Zavodny, Reporter 6TDallas, Texas 75224 Dear Members of the SPJST: I have read with interest the recent letters written in the Vestnik which have endorsed Bro. Nick Morris for the office of president of the SPJST. I, too, must put before the members a few written words which uphold the fact that Bro. Morris is the most qualified man for this position. The prime motivation behind this letter is the sincere admiration and respect that I have for Bro. Morris. I first met him through my parents eight years ago, and I can truthfully say that this meeting was a valuable one for me. Bro. Morris has helped me throughout my college career, granting advice and instilling in me a sense of confidence. The office of president of the SPJST is an extremely important one; one that necessitates hard work and excellent qualifications. Bro. Morris is such a man. His educational background, his command of the English and Czech languages, and his keen insight into the workings of the SPJST qualify him for this office. He has proven his, ability to handle problems and put forth workable solutions. Bro. Morris-has the exuberance and youth to provide the Supreme Office with new ideas; yet he is also equipped with wisdom. and experience to separate reality from fantasy. I feel that Bro. Morris is a valuable asset to the SPJST and cannot be overlooked. Fraternally yours, Leonard S. Patak 4121 Druid Hills Dr. Apt. 223 Member Lodge 84, Dallas -SP J STLODG,E, NO. 88, HOUSTON

Wednesday, April 24, 1968 and Josephine Burl. Come out and bring guests with you. Loraine Cocek, English Reporter -SPJSTHouston, Texas April 17, 1968 Dear Sisters and Brothers Of The SPJST: I (and I'm sure you have been; too) have been reading with great interest the letters that appeared in the Vestnik supporting Brother Nick Morris for the office of president of our SPJSt. Let me say, right here and now, that I agree with them 100 per cent. We should take advantage of the leadership qualities that this energetic mem, ber possesses. There are those who point to his few years of membership. Nick Morris has been a member of the SPJST almost 8 years. Yet, in the six years that he has been active in the SPJST, he has been involved in more SPJST activity than most people will ever be. He has not joined any civic organizations and has thus devoted all his extra time to the SPJST. Many of us know what he accomplished at the last convention. Everyone could see it. I have talked to his many fellow lodge members at Lodge 66, Waco, about the aggressive leadership he has given on many occasions, such as chairman of the First and Second Czechoslovak Spectaculars, member of the Entertainment Committee, member of the Board of Directors, and member of the comittee to re-write the by-laws of that progressive lodge. In addition to that, he has been secretary of District III, 2nd vice president, first vice president, and just recently was elected to the honored position of president of District III. This certainly proves without a doubt that he has performed his tasks well. I don't believe we should prescribe a period of "apprenticeship" that a person has to go through before he can consider himself qualified for a high office. Simply BEING IN AN OFFICE does not necessarily qualify a man for anything. What we are looking for in the next president of the SPJST is untiring LEADERSHIP — a person with proven leadership ability, a man who is a good innovator, a man who can make our order stronger, a man who can get things done, is not afraid to charter new courses, show us and lead us to new and better ways of doing things, and above all, to push the SPJST to greater fraternal heights. If you have been reading the daily

v s

N f K

papers you will find that nine men are presently running for the office of governor of Texas. And guess what? Not a single one of them has ever been governor before in his life! Yet, all of them feel they are qualified to make good governors, and one of them is going to be elected. If you will note, same of them, have had little, if any, governmental experience. Yet, what makes them different from the others? Some of them have that magic something that makes them born leaders, whereas the others don't have it, nor will they ever have it. Some of our greatest presidents of the United States had never served as president before; some had little or no experience in government. VR, they made great presidents. They were intelligent, very capable human beings, with a deep understanding Of the problems facing their country. They knew how to get things done — and they did them! One big advantage of not having held a high office is the fact that you don't know all the reasons and excuses why something CAN'T be done! An aggressive approach, new vision and imagination, new methods and new creative ideas will be the best medicine our SPJST Order needs to go forward and start moving in the right direction. I do not believe in giving a four-year term to someone as a goingout present, as more or less of a gratuity. Now, let's look at one more vital factor and very carefully seek an honest answer: Hew much experience in the SPJST did some of the present Supreme Lodge officers have when they FIRST came into that body? Did they know everything? Certainly not. I say that our hard-working Brother Nick Morris has miles more experience at all levels of the SPJST than did most of our present officers when they FIRST came to the Supreme Lodge, and I am not saying they have not performed well. You see, they all had to learn by trial and error like everyone else did. I wonder who will fill the office of the Supreme Lodge Secretary if there is a vacancy. I am sure it won't be someone who has held that office and knows it from top to bottom. It will be filled like any other job — by the best man we can find to fill that office. Is that job any less important than that of the presidency? As far as the state insurance codes and statutes are concerned, they happen to be written in the English lan-

5 guage, and I have confidence that Brother Nick Morris knows enough English to understand what they mean and what they imply, and I am satisfied that if he doesn't already know this, he will always seek assistance frcim other competent individuals, just like any other intelligent human being would. I have been doing some checking and I happen to know that Brother Nick Morris had 'reason and occasion to know and appreciate what the SPJST was all about a good many years ago, perhaps in a way that none of us have had occasion to experience. It was longer than "six years ago"; to be exact, it was 24 years ago, when he attained the "ripe old age" of 17. His father had passed away when he was 13. He was on his own after that. (His mother passed away when he Was 3 1/2). He worked at manual labor and saved up just a little over $100 to enroll in the university. He worked at odd jobs on the campus to help pay his way through, but that was not enough. The remains of the benefits of his father's SPJST policy were not payable to him until he reached the age of 21. That would be too late. Letters were written, pleas were filed, and to make a long story short, he received his portion of his father's benefits in the sum, of some 50-odd dollars, which was not a great sum, but when you consider that a semester's unition at North Texas back in 1944 cost only $37.50, this was a big help to this young farm boy, working his way through school. So I believe he knows full well the importance of what the SPJST is all about, a lesson learned many years ago, and he has never forgotten it. That benefit check took him through another semester of school until he joined the US Army. Since January, 1945, Brother Morris has not stood still long enough to get too active in the SPJST, since he spent a long time in Korea as a GI, and then in Germany twice as a civilian employee of the US government. When he later completed his education in early 1956, the first thing on his mind was making a living. He joined the SPJST in the fall of 1960-eight years ago. It is true he was involved with another Czech fraternal organization at the time, but Dallas is a pretty big village, and not knowing anyone in that city, one of the first Czech friends he met in Dallas was a representative of the other fraternal.

6 That fraternal has the same aims, purposes, goals, as we do. Many of our members, including our leaders, hold policies in that and other fraternal organizations. When he finally was approached, Brother Morris joined the SPJST and was happy to do so. He immediately got involved in the activities Of the Czech community in early 1956 by being asked to become assistant director of a Czech play in Dallas, where he met his wife, the former Dorothy Liska of Ennis. From that time on, it was more and deeper involvement in the affairs of his fellow Czechs in the Dallas area; chairman of the American-Czech Festival Committee, when, for the first time, a committee was formed with representatives from ALL Czech organizations in the Dallas area. The program was moved out of the Woirnen's Building at the State Fair, where there was room for no more than 300 people (packed like sardines), into the Hall of State and the Band Shell, later into the Coliseum. Brother Morris had a hand in all of this. Today, this project is one of the nicest and biggest in the whole state. Brother Morris has more originality, more drive, more desire, and the true ability and knowledge to lead our SPJST. It's odd but some people learn more quickly than others, and life will always be like that. We're not all made of the same cloth. Some people stay in one office for two or three decades, do only the minimuM requireed of them, and cannot claim any big accomplishments to their credit. Others sit back, watch others toil and bring up new ideas and programs, do nothing to encourage them, and then when it appears that the whole thing is a success, hop on the bandwagon and claim to be a part of the team. Brother Morris will initiate things ON HIS OWN; he does not need to wait for someone else to act. He will PROPOSE and BRING NEW IDEAS AND PROGRAMS and not wait until they are well under way and try to claim credit for them. Brother Morris will give direct answers — a yes or no — if at all humanly possible. This indeed will be a welcome thing, after many years when the double answer has become so popular. Black will be black. White will be white, not something in between. There will be no riding the fence on controversial issues, just to avoid a direct answer. We honestly have had enough of that. I would like the SPJST to M-O-V-E

VESTNIK in the next four years, and Brother Morris is the best all-around man to have at the helm to do it. He'll make a great president. He's for the new, but has a compassionate and deep understanding for the old and all they did for our SPJST Order. His aggressive ability, his loyalty, vision, and imagination will cause all the members to be delighted more in our growth and label him as a doer in our great SPJST Society. He will get us a Czech museum-archives-library in our new headquarters building, if the convention approves the construction of same. We've been thinking and talking about this for 20 years, and now Brother Morris is the one Who can translate words into action and a reality. Brother Morris has contributed much to our society on district and lodge levels the past years. His trait of being earnest, energetic, and one who loves to excel in any problem put before him gives us added reason why he should be the president of our great SPJST Society. all for Brother Nick Morris being our next Supreme Lodge president, and I know many, many other delegates in our area and all over the state who feel the same way as I do. I hope he _accepts the challenge and call to service of our SPJST Order. Many thanks. Fraternally, Louis Harms DISTRICT IV SPRING MEETING Dear Brothers and Sisters: The spring meeting of District IV will be held on Sunday, April 28th, at Lodge 77, in the Bomarton Community Center. NO. 81, NEEDVILLE Dear Members, Our April meeting was held on the first Sunday, due to Easter falling on our regular meeting doy. The meeting was opened with the LODGE

Wednesday, April 24, 1968 Pledge of Allegiance, led by Harvey Bryson. Bro. Arnold Franek reported on the purchase of a better refrigerator for the lodge hall. It was so nice having Mr. and Mrs. Joe Skrabanek of Bellaire visit with us. Hope you will do it again. Bro. Albert Franek was reported in the hospital; also Mrs. Bessie Franek reported her mother, Mrs. Simon Bartos in the Taylor Rest Home, is very ill. New members added to the lodge are Robert S. Gill, Elizabeth Kalisek, Fred Mike Wleczyk, and Frances Ann Janca. Taking out additional policies are Alex Fojtek, Jr., and Eugene Mike Vasek. Harvey Bryson converted his Juvenile Term. The door prize was won by Elizabeth Kalisek, and Janet Graeber won the Easter basket, donated by Sister Anna Matcek. After the meeting, about 22 youngsters enjoyed an Easter egg hunt — even some adults. Our next meeting will be May 12th at 3 p.m. Hope we will see many of y ou who have not been coming to the meetings. Let's all try to be there. Fraternally, Helen Bryson, Reporter San Antonio, Texas Dear Brother Morris and Members Of The SPJST: I joined the SPJST a litle over 66 years ago. In my time, I have served as president of two different local lodges, president of one and vicepresident of another quaderennial convention, First Physician of the Supreme Lodge, and delegate at three different capitol conventions. Because of these facts, I take the liberty of making some suggestions regarding changes contemplated at the capitol convention in June. 1. The Czech portion of our Vestnik should be continued. This is necessary, not only for the benefit of the rapidly decreasing number of our members who understand written Czech better than English, but as well for those of us who still like to read the Czech letters from those contributors who express themselves best in that language. 2. All members of the Supreme Lodge and the Chief Medical Examiner should be elected by the SPJST convention delegates. This would make them responsible to the membership

A very interesting and special guest at the District III meeting was Dr. Karel Duda, Czechoslovak ambassador to the United States. He and his First Secretary, Dr. Jaromir Pribyl, had been to San Antonio to attend formal opening ceremonies at IfemisFair, and arrangements were made to have them stop by briefly at the meeting. parents. He said that this would be the last District III meeting that he would attend in the capacity of President of the Supreme Lodge, and that he has enjoyed the fellowship and friendship during all the years. He then acknowledged the 50-year members. (Sister Aloisie Becan of Lodge 154, and Bro.

Wednesday, April 24, 1968 Frank Steiner, Lodge 84, were the only two present). Bro. Hanka of Dist. 5 expressed his thanks and appreciation for being given the opportunity to speak. He said he feels we should have a rest home in the Gulf Coast Area, and that he would bring it up at the 20th Convention. Bro. Leonard Mikeska was introduced and said he was glad to be here. Sis. Wilma Nesuda stated that our district rules and regulations needed some changes and that after the 20th Convention they could be changed. Bro. Jerry Milan said that his report was in the Vestnik, and that it was important that all members study the changes. He said that some of the changes that were sent in were not in accordance with the state laws so they were dropped. Under unfinished business a motion was made by Bro. Ed Mazanec, seconded by Bro. Otto Hanus that everyone use the mike. Correspondence from Bros. Melvin and J. M. Skrabanek was read by Secy. Vernon Wood. After being asked, Bro. Kacir stated that he had read the letter from Bro. Skrabanek, and asked if the rest home was going to be the boss. He said that the money for the rest home came from the Supreme Lodge and that voting by delegates was the only way to handle the election of the rest home director. He said that Bro. Skrabanek was misleading the members in stating that the membership elect the rest home director. He further stated that if the RH Board of directors refused to seat a director elected by delegates they would have a hard time getting funds at the next convention for another rest home. Sis. Helen Oates (130) made a motion that all district- officers and RH director stand elected as they were elected and voted on in the spring meeting held at Elk on April 9, 1967. Seconded by Sis. Rose Marie Banik (35). That motion was declared void because it was in violation of the bylaws. David Novotny (130) stated that if only delegates could vote at district meetings, that the rest of us might as well go home. 13ro. Morris asked Bro. Hanka how Dist. V elected their RH director. He replied, "by the membership!" Bro. Marek called the roll of delegates to the 1964 convention of each lodge and said they would be the only ones to vote for the RII director. Dear Members and Friends, While reading the last Vestnik, which I read from page to page, (I hope all the members do), what caught my eye mainly was "From the Editor's Desk." In the first place every local lodge elects a delegate or delegates, who are well qualified members and attend meetings regularly and then are well instructed by his or her local lodge as to what to do and how to vote at the convention. I am sure every delegate votes the way he was instructed,

whereas, the knowledge of how a delegate votes when it's done by a secret ballot. Can you answer this, please? Why should a delegate stay home if he doesn't intend to vote as someone is trying to persuade him how to vote? This is a free country and everyone who is elected as a delegate is bound by his conscience to fulfill his duty to his home lodge and go to the convention and vote like he is instructed. I know from experience that the candidates who run for office will come up to the delegate, look at his label for name and his lodge number, and if he just carries a few votes (a small lodge) they won't bother to spend any time with him, but will go on to seek delegates with heavier votes. So delegates, take note, especially those from the country lodges where our membership is small. We were there before the big boys came in and worked hard to keep our head above water, and now they almost advise us to stay at home, not to be in their way. Let's keep this a free country and not dictate to the delegates what to do. Fraternally, Mrs. J. W. Krutilek --SPJSTLODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Members, Greetings from the entertainment committee! Last night a number of Lodge 84 members were invited to help clean the hall. Well, so many accepted and the work progressed rapidly. Boy! so much was done in a short period, prompting Entertainment Chairman Emil Petr to hold a short meeting with his committee to discuss future plans. On May 4, we have the Mother's Day dance, with the Vrazel Orchestra furnishing the music. We especially invite the mothers; 6 corsages will be given away. Were you one of the lucky ones last year? Then Friday, May 17, we have "Urby and his Czech Mates" to play for your dancing pleasure. Yes, we mean Friday; those of you requesting a Friday ni ght dance will be happy to know we "aim to please." This will be the band's first visit to Dallas and you're sure to enjoy their polkas and waltzes as well as the popular numbers you want. If you're the bashful type, write your request on paper and Slip it to them as you dance by. Where else in Dallas on a Friday night can you find a Norwegian accordion player

that can play the "Juarez Polka" like a Czech pioneer? And did you know we also have a dance the next day, Saturday, May 18? Swing and sway to the Eric Honza band from Ennis. You're sure to see many familiar faces. It's membership night and you know how you like to visit as well as dance. Bet there will be a lot of discussion about the remodeling. Honestly, it's so pretty — inside and out. Also the business which will head the list at our meeting Sunday, May 19, will be interesting. This is just before the convention. Our kitchen will be completed, too. Aren't you just a little curious to see who gets to be the first official dishwasher? Girls, no shoving please! Remember, the Entertainment Committee wants you at 2625 Floyd St. May 4th, 17th, and 18th. You are sure to enjoy it. Rose Scott Ent. Secy. —SPJST--

NEW COLONY LODGE NO. 69 Dear Members: The New Colony SPJST Lodge No. 69 will hold a quarterly meeting on Sunday, April 28, 1968, at 2 p.m. All members are invited and urged to attend this meeting which will be held in the New Colony Community Center. Fraternally, Calvin C. Chervenka President Waco, Texas Dear Fellow Members: As the convention nears we hear a lot of pro and con on various ways and means to improve our SPJST. Some of us think that the older more experienced people are the only ones who can guide our society to success, regardless of their age. Some of us think that a younger mind would be better and more likely to guide our society to greater thing. Personally, I have served in big business most of my life. I have held positions with the knost successful firm in business, Sears, Roebuck and Co., and whether we like Sears or not the fact remains that they are the world's largest merchants, as are many others and I cite Bell Telephone Company, General Motors, Ford Motor Co., U. S. Steel, and many others. They have studied man's ability to deliver and everyone of them will retire even the best, fronl a common clerk to the president at age 65, some even lower than 65. Why do these firms do this?

There is only one reason and one reason only and that is that they have found the man is not capable to cope with today's modern business after age 65, so I feel that our society to be successful and to cope with today's highpressure business should have a younger man at its helm. Please don't misunderstand me for I, too, believe that we have capable leadership in our Supreme Lod ge and feel very friendly toward each and everyone of them and have had their friendship in the past and I hope to have their friendship in the future, but from observing today's modern business my convictions are that a younger mind is in a better position to cope with today's problems. I have suggested that we elect Bro. Nick Morris to head our society for the next four years. Why Nick Morris? Well, here are my reasons. He has been accused of having no knowledge or interest in our SPJST up to some six years ago, but he has made an OUTSTANDING SUCCESS of his responsibility as editor of our Vestnik. To me that indicates ABILITY to cope with today's problems. His education and experience in many phases of today's society are unquestionable and this, along with his energy and plenty of horse sense, WELL QUALIFIFs him to UEAD OUR SOCIETY. For years we have talked of trusting younger men at the head of our society, but for some reason we have not given them an opportunity to show their ability and I feel that this is the time to back up our words with deeds. I have also heard frern a few members that Bro. Morris should continue to direct our Vestnik and my feeling on this is that if Bro. Morris does not have any ambition to better himself and our SPJST then he should remain the editor of our Vestnik. I have personally worked with him in various projects and have found him dependable, able, and a very conscientious worker. He possesses the ability to do things that any conscientious person has to respect. I have pushed him to declaring himself as a candidate for this job but he only grins at me and will not commit himself. Yet, I feel that he should. I, for one of the delegates, will keep after him because I feel that he CAN GET THINGS DONE. How about it, Bro. Morris? I have no personal axe to grind for anyone or against anyone, and I feel --that if we all 'study today's modern

Wednesday, April 24, 1968 business if we will check into why business today demands younger men, we will all come to the : . anie conclusion that our Sf4ST ALSO Ni, ''- DS YOUNGER MINDS. I would al ,o like to suggest to all delegates to rai, cl the reports of our Supreme Lodge officials again very carefully and even a third time and be sure that your action at the convention will be for the best of our SPJST. All of these reports are sincere and very good; they all come from the hearts of our officials who have served us well and . I only wish that they could all ego back sonic ten years and I would have not written this letter. Why have I written? For one reason and one reason only, and this is from my personal observation and I am being fair to 'myself and to our society: I have noticed that after 65 I began to slip. I started to forget a lot easier. I even duplicate some of my work, not knowing I had already done it and many other things, and I came to the conclusion that I CANNOT compete with today's problems like I did before age 65. Each year since age 65 the problem became worse so I have asked for and partly retired, and am now working only 4 hours a day, doing work that I can't easily make a costly error in and I am much happier and I feel that the . few years I have left will be much happier that way. With this I will close with a sincere wish that the coining convention will bring us much good, and will be conducted in true FRATEIlINAL SPIRIT for the good of all of us. Fraternally yours, Otto Harms -----SPJST---

-SPJST--DISTRICT FIVE SALES REPORT My March report is somewhat belated, which must be for one reason only. The mailman Must have placed my mail in somebory else's mail box, since I received the report six days after the date on the report, which was April 9th and I received same the 15th. But just the same, our organizers showed that for the month of March they have not been idle. Our insurance sales are progressing fairly Well. Aa of now we have a anal'

11 increase of $170,500 in insurance and 77 applications over last year's same period. This is very encouraging and gratifying to the organizers, very good for our district and as a whole to our order. As usual, District Five organizers are steadily working toward our 1968 goal of $3,000,000. Three months are past and we have a fraction over one-fourth of our quota. I am, very pleased with our results, but I still wish to appeal to the membership in general to inform any of your favorite organizers, if you know of any one interested in our protection. Any one of our organizers will be ready and courteous to please any recommended prospect. They are ready with the information of our various classes of insurance which are reliable and reasonable for any pocketbook. The convention contest now in progress of which we have about 20 days left is showing good results. Quite a few of the organizers are in the race and it is very hard to judge who could be the final winner, since they all are working with enthusiasm, to reach the winner's point. Please do not forget and keep in mind that regardless of who will be the lucky one, the rest of you organizers definitely will not be total losers. Each of you will be a winner in one way or another. Just knowing that you have tried to add to our membership and build our great organization is satisfaction itself. Now I have the pleasure to list the active organizers for the month of March: Lodge

SPJST REPRESENTED AT '[..INGBORN RECREATION LABORATORY The week of March 24th through 30th was spent by Mrs. Emily Mikeska, District 2 Youth Director, Mrs. Wilma Nesuda, District 3 Youth Director, Mrs. Ed Haisler, District, 4 Youth Director, Mrs. Elsie Brdecka, District 6 Youth Director, Mrs. Maxine Pavliska, District 7 Youth Director, Mrs. Marlene Caraway, Lodge 88, Houston, Mrs. Mildred Horak, Lodge 13, Dime Box YL, and State Youth Director James Janousek and his wife at the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory for a week-long training session. The' Supreme Lodge provided the way for the state and district directors. Sister Caraway was sponsored by District V and Lodge 88, Houston, and Sister Horak went on .a scholarship presented to State Youth Director Janousek at last year's laboratory. The District Youth Directors from District 1 and District 5 sere unable to attend. The SPJST had the honor of having the second largest group represented at the laboratory, which was attended by about 75 leaders and workers of various organizations of the Southwest. Each 18-hour day was filled with classes dealing with the various phases of work that could apply to youth leadership and program development. Without a doubt, a great deal was learned that could be applied to all phases of our youth program and leadership training. Each session at the lab was under the supervision of a person, qualified as expert in that field, and those from the SPJST took full advantage of all that was offered. A special scholarship was awarded to Mrs. Maxine Pavliska that is to be given to someone else in the SPJST next year. This scholarship is given to a person attending the lab for the first time, based on his or her interest or contributions while at the lab. Along with Sister Pavliska, the other directors and leaders excelled and gave a good representation of the SPJST. Another special honor was given Mrs. Wilma Nesuda by being selected and elected as first alternate to the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory Board of Directors, the body which governs the

The District Youth Directors agree with me 100 per cent that every youth leader could profit greatly from attending this lab. There is so much that is learned, but a great deal more is profited by the experience of learning how to, when to, and why. If we will look at our most progressive clubs we can see that the leaders in almost every case have prior training by some other organization. What the directors and I have learned will be passed on to the leaders and youth as much as possible. However, it wall be impossible to transfer all of the knowledge due to our limited time sessions. This having been my second year at

the lab, I can say that a great deal was learned in addition to what had been presented the year before. Since it is impossible to• attend everything they have to offer in one year, this opportunity was Welcomed to learn more and get "refresher courses" on certain phases of youth work. Although each year follows the same pattern, the material is new and there is more than one person can attempt to learn, which is the main reason that my wife Kathy attended. Speaking in behalf of the District Youth Directors, we are grateful for this opportunity that Was provided us by the Supreme Lodge, and trust that

--SPJST---FROM THE DISTRICT YOUTH DIRECTORS

DISTRICT III Dear Members: Each of the SPJST groups who' attended the Longhorn Recreation Laboratory in Glen Rose came home with a deep appreciation of our opportunity received, as well as the value of the training. This laboratory is outstanding, being well planned and offering intensive experience in a variety of recreational activities, as well as training in leadership and human relationship pertaining to group work. I would sincerely recommend this training for every youth leader who can afford the time, one week. Any lodge that would invest $35 would profit in having a well-trained leader. During the course of the spring meeting, posters were displayed by the youth of Lodges 66, 6, 84, 130 and 35. This is one of the most interesting activities we have. The display draws attention throughout the day. Lodge 84 Teens and Juniors and Lodge 66 youth displayed the three best posters which will be displayed at the convention. Honorable mention goes to Lodges 130, 35, and 6, in that order. District III is very proud of its contestants for the Miss SPJST title. The content and delivery of their speech was excellent and the display of talent very gratifying. Our appreciation to all of you Congratulations to winner Beverly Gaidusek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Gaidusek and to the alternate, Frances Jo Kudrna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe F. Kudrna. Representing other lodges were Jeanette Krizan (6), daughter of Mrs. and the late John Krizan; Janie Pavelka (35), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene L. Pavelka; Justine Marie Pokladnik (84), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Pokladnik; and Teresa Vrla (130) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Vrla. Each lodge can be justly proud of their contestant. In our youth program, summer officially begins with installation of officers on June 1st. Your May elections are important and I hope you do have

Remember to conduct your meetings promptly and dispose of your business quickly. Then you can get on to the activities you have chosen for your club. In arranging these activities have a balanced program including ones beneficial to your lodge, charitable and educational ones and always, recreational activities. Be sure your members have a choice and that everyone can participate. For all of us there will be special events this year: the convention in Dallas early in June, Youth Achievement Day in Ennis at Lodge 25, June 30, and Camp Val Verde near Waco, August 5 through 8, Plan to take part where you can. Make the most of your summer time. May I remind the leaders of our training class to be held all day at Lod g e 66 on April 27. Lodge 66 will have lunch snacks to sell so you will not have to pack a lunch. Then on May 17 at 7:30 p.m. we will meet at Lodge 25, Ennis to discuss camp and make final arrangements. If anyone from your lodge is going to camp, the leaders must attend this meeting. Fraternally, Wilma Nesuda, DYD, District III

DISTRICT V Dear Members of District V, Our esteemed State y outh Director met with me last weekend and helped me further realize my responsibilities as your District Youth Director. Because of my job I was unable to attend the Longhorn Laboratory. After reading about the fun, you had and all the knowledge you gained I certainly was sorry that I was unable to atend. I'm looking forward to the seminar in Sweet Home on Saturday, April 20. I hope all the youth leaders and assistants from District V will be there. Much knowledge can be gained from these sessions. On May 14, at 7:30 p.m., there will be a youth leaders' meeting in Galveston at Lodge 146, 5717 Avenue S. Camp preparations will be discussed. Hope you can make it. Any lodge in District V that is interested in forming a youth club, please don't hesitate to contact me. I will be most happy to assist you in any way possible. Youth leaders, I Would like to visit your clubs; please contact me when you have your meeting, and when you would like for me to come. I visited the Galveston Youth Club on April 7. Meeting time was set for 2 p.m. at the store. There were a few late corners but we finally got into action. We •had surprising our youngsters in mind, so we boarded Mrs. James' pickup and headed for the park. First, we cleaned the picnic area of litter left behind by careless picknickers. Everyone took part in gathering fire wood. Billy Trojcak was in charge of the fire for our cookout. Junior James and Keith Dyson were team captains for the ball game. Both of the captains Fare pre-schoolers and so they were learning by doing, and I- think good experience for both of them. While the club members were enjoying the ball game, our visitors, Susan and Kenneth, got things under way for the egg hunt by hiding the Easter eggs. Billy Trojcak found the prize egg and Debbie Ledkins found the

wee prize egg. They were awarded prizes. The Easter -eggs were counted and divided equally among the club members. We all enjoyed "cooked out" refreshments, cleaned up our mess and departed for home. Fraternally, Martha Sembera Youth Leader LODGE NO. 40, MUM', Dear Members, This is to remind you mut on Tuesday , May 7, we will hold our meeting and also have elections of new officers. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Hillje .S.PJST Hall. So remember the date and come to the meeting and afterwards help celebrate the birthdays of two of our club members. Fraternally, Mrs. Victor Knebel, Youth Leader s— LODGE NO. 88, HOUSTON Dear Readers: Our princess ball took place on Easter Sunday and it really was beautiful. All of the contestants were presented with transistor radios. Our master of ceremonies for the ball was James Cross. James did a marvelous job announcing for the processional and we appreciate his time and efforts very much. Johnny Elzner was his assistant. The youth of Lodge 88 presented me with a beautiful white orchid at- the ball and I want to thank each one of them right now. I have enjoyed it so much and I do appreciate their thoughtfulness. Wednesday, April 24, 1968 thank you enough. I know the teens and juniors had a good time at the ball because I must say I have never seen them enjoy dancing as much as they did Sunday night to the music of "The Fabulous Te'stars." And "fabulous" is the word for this band, as each of the teens will tell you. May I take this opportunity to thank the Telstars for making our princess ball truly a "ball." We also had an Easter egg hunt Sunday afternoon. I won't venture to guess how many children hunted eggs but believe Me, there was a whole lot of them. Children were everywhere; 'thirteen prize bunnies were given away along with candy eggs and the egg eggs. Mrs. Louise Knapick made our centerpiece for the prize table. This centerpiece included a big lavender bunny, sugar eggs with scenes insine them (mane by her daughter) and colored goose e gg s (donated by Mr. Jarisch). It really was pretty. The next big event on the youth club calendar will be our motherdaughter and father-son day. More will be announced about this day later. I would also like to thank Mr. Jurica for his donation of a half a case of eggs for our Easter egg hunt. My face is read for in error I thanked only Mr. jarisch for the eggs when I should have thanked both of these nice members for their thoughtfulness. Sorry about that! Fraternally, Marlene Caraway Youth Leader LODGE NO. 87, TEMPLE Dear Members, Don't forget our youth meeting on May 2nd. We will start learning Czech songs and also Czech dances. Mrs. Joe Zvolanek will teach the songs and dances from 4-6 p.m. On Sunday, May 5, we will be honoring our senior members, so all of you youth members come out. Youth Club 47 has invited us to a teen dance on Friday, April 26. Let's all go out and support this club. There will be no charge and parents are invited, too. The children have finally finished their "thing," which they will present at our district meeting. They used 20 yards of unbleached domestic and every scrap of material that they could find. We had a sewing lesson and everyone had a hand in making this

We will also have our election of officers, so come prepared to vote for the best and that you know will handle each office very capably. Fraternally; Mrs. Adeline Kohutek Youth Leader -SPJSTLETTERS FROM THE YOUTH LODGE NO. 84, DALLAS Dear Readers: The youth members of Lodge No. 84 had an Easter egge hunt last Saturday and a few of the teen members of the lodge were present. I'm sure everyone had a great time. There were games for the small children and games for the older children while parents and teens hid the eggs for the youth to find. They had a really great turnout. I think that the teens should take the example set by the youth and bring as many of their friends to the teen activities as possible. As many of the members know, the mother lodge is really doing a lot of remodeling. I guess they got inspired by the new Teen Room and decided to give the whole lodge a new look! By the time this is printed the lodge will be finished, but in the meantime, there is going to be a lot of cleaning up to do, and the teens will be glad to help to give the whole lodge a new look. Everyone come to the next dance and see the new look of Lodge 84! Fraternally yours, Linda Bartek (18) Secretary

VtSTNitlt LODGE 84, DALLAS Dear Readers, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the lodges of District III for electing me the new flag bearer for the district. I'm proud to hold the position and I hope that I can prove this by doing my duties without flaws or failure. It's an honor to serve with the newly-elected officers and those who are returning re-elected to their offices in the district. May I offer you my heartiest congratulations! It was a real honor for our lodge's two youth clubs to have had two winning posters in the District III Poster Contest. Both the Junior Club and the Teen Club have done a lot of hard work this year, so each of the youth can be proud of the awards he has helped to bring to his club. It's easy to see that when we, the present teenagers of our lod ge, have outgrown the Teen Club, a fine group of future teenagers will take the reigns and keep our club as great as it has been ever since it was organized. Though we don't tell the Junior Youth Club this too often, the fact remains that we think our Junior Youth Club is the best there is. The Teen Clubs of Lodge 84 and Lodge 130, both of Dallas, are discussing plans for some swell entertainment for those teenagers who come to the SPJST Convention in June. We hope to see many teen agers there, since this is a good way to show your interest in the affairs of our organization. From personal experience, I can say that these conventions are very rewarding and well worth attending And this year, through the combined efforts of Lodge 84 and Lod ge 130, we'll try our very best to make this convention even more worthwhile. We'll be looking forward to seeing all of you there, especially YOU! I'd also like to congratulate Miss Beverly Gaidusek of Waco, District IiI's contestant in the Miss SPJST contest to be held during the convention in June. We are all sure that Beverly will represent our district very, very well. It was an added pleasure to have had two of the contestants from the very first Miss SPJST contest ever held with us when we selected our candidate for this year's contest. I'm sneaking of Mrs. La Nell Brem, the former La Nell Ceska, who was first runner-un in the District III run-off for Miss SPJST ei ght years ago, and Mrs. Johnny Muehlstein Jr., the former Miss Jerry Ann Urban, who won the District 3 run-off and went on to win

21 first runner-up in the final contest for Miss SPJST, which was held on San Antonio. We were very happy to see these two ladies with us again. This time they had their famines with them. Before I end this letter, I'd like to offer congratulations to our Junior Youth Club for having a winning entry in the contest for covers for the Y Until Loma: unicator. We'll be looking for the cover when the Communicator comes out again. And how about some congratulations to Lodge 66, Waco, on that superb dinner they served all of us who attended the District III meeting on April 7th? We all enjoyed it greatly. Fraternally, Robert Urban (17) President -SPJST-TEMPLE LODGE 87

Dear Readers, At our youth meeting on April 4 we made Easter baskets for the younger children. We made over 80 of these. We took a strawberry carton (basket), covered it with different colors of crepe paper and used 2 pipe cleaners for the handle. These we filled with different colors of artificial grasS. We put these on our tables at the lodge. They looked very pretty since we used pastel colors. We also gave 50 baskets to the pre-school children of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Fraternally, Carla Engtrock (12) Without Stamps

A Congressman has drafted a bill which would permit tax returns to be 'nailed to the Internal Revenue Seri"ice offices without stamps. He thinks even a small savings like the price of a postage stamp will mean a great deal to the harried taxpayer. The Congressman also has an idea that one day a law may be passed that will require payment to individuals and businesses for making out all the reports required in the collection of the government's tax money. —SPJST-

Be Thankful Consider the many liberties we enjoy in this nation and be thankful for their existence. Be thankful for our freedom to achiev, work and advance; for our freedom to warship; for our right to free speech and free elections. This overflowing of good should daily remind us to pray for peace throughout the world so that all mankind may live in harmony and enjoy the fruits of a better life.

CREATING INSTANT ESTATES .

When life insurance is planned right, it protects your interests without playing havoc with your budget. An SPJST representative can show you how a low-premium policy can become the foundation of a high cash-value investment program. Building an estate takes a mighty long time if you do it in the traditional manner. DOirg it through life insurance is another matter entirely. Saving the old way takes time, and time is one thing that cannot be guaranteed. Life insurance guarantees you the equivalent of time. It guarantees protection from the moment your policy becomes effective. Thus, your estate is, in effect, created instantly. See your nearest SPJST representative, or call or write the address below.

E. C. "Gene" Prickette, son of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Prickette of 3919 South Fourth Street in Waco, was born in Columbus, Texas and has lived in Waco the past forty-five years. He attended Waco Public Schools and graduated from Waco High School in 1935. He is fifty years old.

E. C. "GENE" PRICKETTE CANDIDATE FOR COUNTY CLERK, MCLENNAN COUNTY Prickette went to work as a deputy county clerk under the late Floyd Mitchell in 1961. For the past six years he has been a deputy tax assessor and collector in Joe W. Alexander's department from which he has resigned in order to actively campaign for the office of County Clerk. Prickette has had twenty years business experience as office and personnel manager when he was co-owner with his father, B. E. Prickette, Sr., in the Huaco Gardens Wholesale Produce Co., in Waco.

Prickette married the former Doris Foster, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Foster, long-time residents of Waco. He and his wife reside at 1316 North Thirty-fourth Street in Waco. They have two children. Their son, John Foster Prickette, is assistant manager of the Texas Power and Light Co., district office in Richardson, Texas. Their daughter is Mrs. Robert M. Bagley, Jr., a teacher in the Waco Public Schools. Prickette is a deacon of the First Baptist Church in Waco. He is a Master Mason, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Karem Shrine Temple. He has an active part in degree work both in the Scottish Rite and Karem Shrine. Prickette is also a member of the Waco Police Reserve, Southwest Football Officials Association, the Civil Defense Team for the McLennan County Court House and a member of the Texas Barbed Wire Collectors Association and a director of the American Barbed Wire Collectors Association. Prickette realizes the importance of the County Clerk's Office and he wants to show the people of McLennan County that he is qualified for the position.

Prickette would like to urge every qualified voter to vote on May 4, in the Democratic Primary. Also call attention to the fact that his name will be the top name on the ballot for County Clerk. This year you will place an "X" by the candidate that you wish to vote for. And it will be necessary to mark every place on the ballot for the one person you wish to be elected. 8his will be necessary even though some places will only have one person listed — you must mark this name if you want to vote for that person. No votes will be counted unless your choice is marked in every office.
