Have A Street Party! Having a street party is easier than you think! That’s because Breckland Council is running a series of workshops offering support and advice on how to host a street party to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee 2nd - 5th June 2012 will be a great excuse to hold a street party. One million people held street parties for this year’s royal wedding and it’s hoped that many more will organise one for the Jubilee. A street party is a great opportunity to meet your neighbours and have fun with the kids and adults playing together in a trafficfree street. Lynda Turner, Executive member for Localism, Communities and Environmental Services said; “The Diamond Jubilee is an excellent

opportunity for neighbourhoods to get together and celebrate - a good party can inspire people to work towards streets that are permanently more sociable and safer. We are delighted to be offering the workshops to give residents a good starting point” Breckland Council is holding a number of workshops in your local area to help you plan and organise the perfect street party. For details of a workshop near you please see www.breckland.gov.uk; look in the Breckland Voice magazine or call Cat Lang on 01362 656870.

Applications Flood In For Youth Council Teenagers have responded to the call to become part of the Breckland Youth Council and add weight to efforts to improve the local area for youngsters. Over forty applications have been received from local youngsters keen to take part in local democracy. Councillor Lynda Turner, the executive member for Localism, Community and Environmental Awareness, backs the scheme. She said: “We are lucky to have so many young people who are hard working and eager to get involved in local issues in order to make life better for their peers and the wider community.” “Being a member of a youth council is an ideal way of making your voice

heard and having the opportunity to influence change for the better.” Current members of the youth council and Breckland Council’s Young People’s Champion Diana Irving will be reading through each application and taking a vote over who will be invited to an informal interview. After the interview process, present youth council members will also vote for the final number and co-opt the new members in. An evening reception has been planned for the 3rd November at the Eco Tech Centre in Swaffham to welcome the new youth councillors. For further information please contact Lisa Green on 01362 656330 or Pam Sayle on 01362 656813.
