Spice Makes a Difference Spice members love supporting the community – either in practical help (like on litter picking walks) or by raising huge amounts of cash for good causes. Our involvement with charities also enables us to offer some absolutely unique experiences – so with these events everyone wins! As well as these, you will find other events under other categories which promote social awareness and support selected charities, including some of our Behind the Scenes visits.

Spice Book Club .. discuss a book each month over tea & cakes! th

Dates: Mondays: ● 8 Oct ● 12th Nov ● 3rd Dec ● 7th Jan ● 4th Feb Place: Meet inside The Spice Office – see below (B74 3EJ) Meet: 8pm Start (ends around 9.30pm) Cost: FREE, but collection for Book Aid on day. In order to have a sociable literary evening each month and raise money for Book Aid International (www.bookaid.org) we have a monthly meet up at the Spice office. The idea is that each month we discuss a set book that we have read in preparation. The conversation will be lead by our volunteer, Kate Coulter, but is very informal. Kate will provide teas/ coffees/mineral water and some home baked treats. A voluntary collection will be taken each month which we will send to Book Aid International who send books to schools and libraries in third world countries and are endorsed by celebrity writers such as Michael Palin and their patron is The Duke of Edinburgh. It costs just £2 to send one book to readers in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond so every penny we raise can make a difference. Preparation: You will need to have read each book beforehand. You can buy or try your local library. The Venue: The Spice Office is above Boots Chemist at 6a Burnett Road in Streetly, Sutton Coldfield B74 3EJ. Press the buzzer on the green door which is to the side of Boots. There is parking on the road, and around the back. The Books (there is a précis of each book on the on line version of this write up at www.spicebham.com): ● October: Night Circus - Erin Morganstern. ● November: The Well - Peter Labrow ● December: Tideline -Penny Hancock ● January: The Wine of Angels - by Phil Rickman ● February: The Winter Ghosts – Kate Mosse

Charity Spice Christmas Cake Club .. where we chat about cakes .. oh and eat them too! th

Date: Sunday 9 December 2012 Place: Walsall (details to be sent) # Meet: 4pm - 6pm (note later time than September date) Cost: Free to book but charity collection on night. Incl: Tea or Coffee. Please bring along a homemade cake or some cupcakes to share! Baking is becoming extremely popular – trendy even! And we were surprised that it was mainly younger members that came to our last Cake Club and that a fair number were men! Spice members Helen & Gary have invited us again to be guests at their lovely home in Walsall. Helen helps the group enjoy a relaxed sociable afternoon sharing and chatting about homemade cakes, drinking tea and hopefully playing sociable games in their garden (they have trampoline, lawn darts, inflatable scrabble and a giant Jenga). If the weather is poor we’ll enjoy their indoor entertainment (a games room with a pub sized pool table, bar football table, table tennis, and arcade machine). There is no charge to attend, but there will be a collection during the afternoon to support the work ‘Disability Snowsport UK’, (Helen & Gary’s favourite charity). Note: This isn’a competition, no judging, just a lot of fun. And you get to try lots of cake, and maybe take some home!
