Yogashri Pradhan SPE‐PB Chairman 2020‐2021 Senior Reservoir Engineer Endeavor Energy Resources Every month, I will write a literature review related to the upcoming sec on mee ng. The sec on mee ng will cover the science of gas li , which is an important topic to our members, as it relates to ar ficial li op miza on. I’ll cover a more general topic on ar ficial li op miza on, which is determining the combina on of strategies to obtain the highest EUR’s. A workflow below could give some insight on how to determine these group of strategies:

(Pradhan 2017) The workflow suggests that ar ficial li selec on is a proac ve process. One could choose candidate wells by reviewing well produc on histories, reservoir proper es, and data quality. If possible, build numerical simula on models and calibrate using produc on history data. One could use various AL cases using a different combina on of methods. Ver cal Flowing Pressure (VFP) tables for each AL ought to be generated and imported into the calibrated numerical models for the simula on of different AL cases. Down me percentages and mean me before failure in days should also be taken into considera on to accurately determine EUR’s. Figures below show the down me distribu ons of Midland Basin wells from 2015‐2017 and the EUR results from the workflow: (Con nued on Next Page)

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER

(Pradhan 2017)

More details about the paper and results could be found un URTEC 2668625 and URTEC 2902293. While gas li may have the lowest down mes, it is difficult to achieve minimum drawdown pressures. Stephenson et al (SPE‐190959‐MS) discuss a flexibility and elimina on of a workover rig in that side‐pocket mandrels with a special pocket por ng configura on were selected to enable annulus flow with enhanced gas passage early in the well's life. To transi on from annulus flow to tubing flow, the slickline‐retrievable valves were pulled and replaced with reverse‐flow gas li valves. For ESP op miza on, Gonzalez et al (SPE‐194418‐MS) cover an improved ESP technology to be er handle gas slugs and avoid having gas lock as the root cause. A shrouded ESP with a double stage of gas separa on connected at the bo om of the shroud that act as intake and was designed to break the gas slugs and avoid gas entrance into ESPs by forcing free gas to go around the shroud and produce through the casing. The key is depending on the company, the combina on of strategies and the reliability of the equipment need to provide the op mal NPV and IRR. Feel free to discuss with me about the topic men oned or if you would like to make a request on what technical topics I ought to cover in future Chairman’s Corners.

SPE September Sec on Mee ng / Dis nguished Lecturer

Don’t miss this SPE Virtual Dis nguished Lecturer! Science vs The Art of Gas Li Kenneth Decker 11:30 AM Thursday, September 17, 2020 Permian Basin Sec on REGISTER HERE: h ps://www.spe.org/en/dl/schedule/ An Extra 45 Minutes Can Provide a World of Knowledge

Science vs The Art of Gas Li Abstract: The gas li design technique is the result of empirical evidence gathered at the wellhead. Because the design technique is generally successful it is believed the theories of valve performance are also correct. Flow tes ng of gas li valves has provided more accurate performance models but those models have not been incorporated into the design technique. The annulus gas balance concept will be introduced and used to explain how tested valve performance models can be used to perform analysis on gas li wells. Data collected from an unconven onal well be analyzed and compared to tradi onal analysis methods. Standard prac ce for gas li was developed decades ago without the benefit of modern tools and test data. We now have the tools and data to perform more accurate design and analysis. We should begin to change ‘standard prac ce’ to reflect our new understanding of how gas li works. Biography: Ken has spent his professional career working with Gas Li and par cularly the flow performance of gas li valves. That career has spanned 40 years working with Merla, O s, and finally Decker Technology, Inc. He served as the chairman of the original API 11V2 RP document that defined how gas li valves are to be tested. The Valve Performance Clearinghouse (VPC) was created and administered by Ken for 17 years before being donated to Louisiana State University. He has consulted on gas li projects around the world, wrote computer programs to simulate and analyze gas li wells, wri en numerous SPE papers, is a regular presenter for the Gas Li Workshop, and was named an SPE Ar ficial Li Legend in 2018.

PBS‐SEPM September Luncheon Mee ng Time: Tuesday, September 29, 11:30 AM Loca on: Virtual / In‐Person— Bush Conven on Center, 105 N Main St, Midland, TX 79701, USA Speaker: Dr. Mark Engle, UTEP Topic: "Sourcing and characterizing geochemical changes from unpermi ed produced water dumping, Permian Basin, USA” Register: h ps://www.pbs‐sepm.org/events‐1/september‐ luncheon‐mee ng Email: You may also email info@pbs‐sepm.org to register for both virtual and physical presenta ons before September 25

Abstract: Produced waters are the most voluminous waste stream of hydrocarbon produc on, with the Permian Basin of New Mexico and Texas producing more than 107 barrels/day (1.7x109 L/day). Despite calls for be er produced water management in this semi‐arid region, unpermi ed produced waters dumping remains a serious problem. This study focuses on the chemical and isotopic composi on of 41 surface (0‐5 cm) and core (0‐30 cm) soil samples from 5 dump sites in the Mescalero sand dunes, southeast New Mexico. Surface samples iden fied as those impacted by produced water dumps (n=18) exhibit higher water content (p<0.01) and saturated electrical conduc vity (up to 5.8% and 23.2 mS/cm) than control samples (n=15). Nearly all water extractable ions were enriched in dump surface samples rela ve to control samples, with major ions enriched by factors of 13 to 4,500 (averages). Isometric logra os of Br, Cl, and Na in water leachates from the dump samples overlap those of nearby produced waters from ght oil (e.g., Bone Spring) and conven onal gas wells, which are of paleo seawater origin. 87Sr/86Sr composi on of water leachates of surface control samples (0.70850–0.70894) correspond to that of local caliche, indica ng Sr originated from local dust and precipita on. 87Sr/86Sr of surface dump samples are universally higher (0.70919–0.70942) than the control samples, and can be modeled by addi on of ~1‐200 ml of produced water from the Bone Spring, Strawn, or Morrow reservoirs to a kg of average control sample soil. Local produc on data from within the study area show that roughly 80% of produced water generated during the period of dumping came from horizontal Bone Spring wells. Data from core samples show that na ve Sr was completely flushed out to depths >30 cm at one site but not the other, sugges ng site‐specific controls on sub‐surface flow of waste fluids. Surface dump samples also show a ~2‐ fold enrichment in 226Ra and 228Ra rela ve to control samples, but are well below ac vi es from mass balance mixing calcula ons with produced waters sugges ng Ra loss prior to or a er dumping occurred. Results from this ini al inves ga on demonstrate that unpermi ed dumping of produced water degrades environmental quality and can be traced using isotopic tools. Biography: Mark Engle is a Professor in the Dept. of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he focuses on the geochemistry and movement of fluids in sedimentary basins and at the air‐surface interface. He has published nearly 100 papers, reports, and book chapters on a number of topics including the origin of produced waters from major oil gas and ght oil plays. He previously served as the chief of the U.S. Geological Survey Energy Resources Program’s produced waters project, for more than a decade. He holds a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from the University of Nevada, Reno and a B.S. with an emphasis in chemistry and earth sciences from the Evergreen State College.
