CHAIRMAN’S CORNER

Yogashri Pradhan SPE‐PB Chairman 2020‐2021 Senior Reservoir Engineer Endeavor Energy Resources For this Chairman’s corner, instead of a technical literature review, I decided to discuss how the oil and gas industry has influenced my life and could influence the life of others. This year is full of many changes for all of us, but it especially brought my husband and I closer together. I moved to Midland in April 2018 when commodity prices were picking up so I could start a new job. I met my husband in July 2018, when he moved to Midland to start a new job as well. Our passion about the oil and gas industry, especially working in the Permian Basin, brought us together. I got him to volunteer for SPE at the local level, as we are both passionate about SPE. Li le did he know that I would overwhelm him with volunteer opportuni es. It started with a study group, then it was volunteering for a Symposium, and now he is a fellow Board member for the local sec on. We both like to be a part of technical ini a ves and try to give back as much as possible to the organiza on. We both like to give back to the community in Midland, whether if it is volunteering at the West Texas Food Bank or building houses at Habitat for Humanity. He probably figured out my now that I got him involved because it was a way for us to spend more me together. The plan did work, a er all. Back in March, when the en re country was on lockdown, my now husband proposed to me. We knew we wanted a small wedding, and we were sure that Midland County City Hall was going to be our des na on wedding. Because we are passionate about our careers, my husband suggested the idea that we would get married on a wellsite. At first, I was hesitant, but realized that the plan might be unique enough to work. I emailed the sole proprietor of the company I work for, and he fully supported us to get married on one of my company’s wellsites. The produc on team was also very suppor ve, as they prepared the wellsite loca on for our wedding service. (Con nued on Next Page)

Yogashri Pradhan and Ryan Yarger on their wedding day.

CHAIRMAN’S CORNER We got married on October 17th, 2020 at the Tex‐Harvey Spraberry 941H. A small gathering of our close family and friends a ended our service, while we also livestreamed the event on social media. We are enjoying our married life, and our friends and family are jokingly telling us that if we made it this far we “made it past the hard part.” The oil and gas industry influenced my husband and I’s lives to say the least. I hope that the industry has impacted you in a posi ve way, as it has done to us. I also hope that you all have a wonderful winter holiday as well. May you all be safe and healthy with your families.

Congratulations and Warmest Wishes from the SPE Permian Basin Board to the happy couple!

SPE December Sec on Mee ng Abstract: Op mal well spacing remains one of the major topics of debate in the development of unconven onal oil plays. There is s ll no consensus among operators with respect to the choice of an ideal development strategy. Some large operators with high‐value acreage may apply conserva ve well spacing, confident about their ability to maximize recovery and present value per well without confron ng the challenges of interference associated with denser spacing. Given that the market acknowledges the long‐term acreage poten al for these companies, this strategy allows to maintain investor confidence with no nega ve impact on enterprise value. Meanwhile, smaller operators may prefer aggressive down‐spacing programs to maximize their asset’s value. In general, with the ini al increase in the number of wells per spacing unit, NPV increases linearly while rate of return does not degrade. Once frac interference starts eroding well produc vity, the rate of return starts declining. Yet NPV per unit s ll increases before produc vity degrades too steeply. The op mal number of wells per sec on is found somewhere between these two inflec on points. The exact choice will depend on operator or investor preference, which is maximiza on of either return or total value, the la er being more capital‐ intensive. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the op mal spacing range for some areas of the Permian Basin (Midland North/South, Delaware Texas/New Mexico) and key landing intervals (different zones of Wolfcamp, Spraberry and Bone Spring). The results have significant prac cal value for E&P operators involved in the ongoing development of the Permian Basin. Previous research in the area was normally focused on individual case or operator studies. To our knowledge, this paper is the first a empt to address the choice of op mal well spacing in the whole Permian Basin. The results of the paper could be interpreted as Permian E&P playbook when it comes to the selec on of well density. Biography: Alexandre Ramos‐Peon is Vice President for Rystad Energy’s Shale Research team. He is responsible for mely and accurate processing U.S. well‐level E&P data into a comprehensive North American upstream database. He develops sta s cal models for industry trends analysis, with par cular focus on empiric produc on profiles, well spacing, and produc vity drivers in unconven onal reservoirs. In addi on, he is ac ve in research and development of modern data‐ scien fic forecas ng methods. Alexandre holds a PhD in Mathema cs from the University of Bern in Switzerland, and a master’s degree from Padua (Italy) and Paris‐Orsay/Polytechnique/ENS.

Chad Senters ProTechnics Abstract: Nega ve fracture driven interac ons (FDIs) have the poten al to damage offset producing wells. Overlap in well drainage area can significantly increase drilling and comple on costs and poten ally reduce recovery, as well. Inter‐well communica on and FDIs are influenced by several factors, including well spacing, landing intervals, well comple on, s mula on treatment design, etc. Several mi ga on techniques are available for the primary (parent) wells as well as the infill (child) wells. This presenta on outlines methods to test and op mize drilling and comple on programs through the surveillance of inter‐well communica on and FDIs. Case history data from mul ple projects will include inter ‐well communica on observa ons, FDI findings and mi ga on technique results. Biography: Chad Senters is the Region Engineering Advisor for the ProTechnics division of Core Laboratories specializing in comple on diagnos cs. Chad has over 15 years of experience in the oil and gas industry including s mula on, coiled tubing and downhole tools in addi on to comple on diagnos cs. Chad is a graduate of the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri Rolla) with a BS in Chemical Engineering and graduate cer ficate in Management and Leadership. SPE Permian Basin Young Professionals Member of the Month This month the Young Professionals group would like to honor our Membership Chair, Ri hy Son, who has ac vely served on the YP board for the last 2 years. Ri hy currently works as a Produc on Engineer for SM Energy, and was previously with the Drilling Engineering team. He has consistently volunteered at our community service events and ini ated and coordinated the SPE YP Mentorship Program. Please reference below to learn more about Ri hy, his commitment to SPE and his advice for other young professionals. Where is your hometown and how long have you been in the Permian Basin? My hometown is Carrollton, TX and I’ve lived in the Permian for almost 5 years What is one fun fact that our Members should know about you? Ask the Midland Habitat for Humanity about my lawnmowing skills – I’m famous. If you’re looking for guaranteed fun in the WTX sun, volunteer with them! What commi ed you to join SPE Young Professionals? Everyone has at least one brush with des ny in their life. I was fortunate enough to meet our former YP chair Fumi Balogun in 2019 who’s dedica on and passion for SPE YPs would have convinced anyone to join up. As a Young Professionals' Membership Chair, what resources would you suggest our members to u lize as they con nue to strive through difficult mes? Spend me (re)connec ng with your network with a brief call/message to share that you care about them. It’s an understatement to say that things are difficult right now, but there are likeminded folks (shameless plug for the YPs here) that would look forward to the opportunity to go through whatever these challenges are, together with you. If there’s anything I can do to be of service, feel free to email or contact me at 469.463.4992 (including weekends). What's the best advice you were ever given? Who was it from? “If you know everything, you can’t learn anything.” My father gently reminds me of this common self decep on, paraphrased of course. What message would you like to give our readers this month? SPE is a community effort which reflects both our successes and setbacks. If you’ve observed opportuni es that would make a difference and have cri cal feedback on the organiza on’s programs, please help us improve by sharing them. The best is yet to come. What is your most memorable volunteering moment with SPE? TTU supports an elementary to high school LEGO robo cs compe on in WTX. Co‐judging with TTU SPE and watching the good work teams invested in their successful designs was fun enough to make an Aggie throw his guns up.
