Spectacular Two-Day Event Will Launch the Grand Opening of the New Science Center The Undaunted Spirit of Women in Science and Mathematics The theme “Celebrating the Undaunted Spirit of Women in Science and Mathematics,” is reflective of Spelman’s long history of achievement in the sciences. Building on this legacy, Spelman enjoyed a national ranking of No. 2 acceptance of African Americans into U.S. medical schools for the year 2001. This ranking is certified by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). As many as one-third of all Spelman students graduate with degrees in math and science. Dr. Etta Z. Falconer, Callaway Professor of Mathematics, was recently tapped for a lifetime achievement award by The American Association for the Advancement of Science. D AY O N E , A P R I L 1 1 , 2 0 0 2 The two-day festivities begin with a trumpet call on Thursday, April 11 at 1:30 PM, in the Atrium. From there, the assembled alumnae and faculty will proceed to the Science Center. The Dean of Sisters Chapel, Reverend Lisa Rhodes, will greet the processional and offer the invocation. The ribbon cutting will follow. The three Spelman presidents who worked so hard to raise money for the new building, Dr. Donald Stewart, Dr. Johnetta Cole and Dr. Audrey Manley, have been invited to cut the ribbon, in recognition of their fundraising efforts. Student presentations are next, followed by an elegant outdoor dinner served on the oval. After dinner, Dr. Manley will offer welcoming comments and the opportunity to register for any of five Scientific Lectures. A special video and dessert reception will follow.

In Search of a President The search for Spelman’s next president is both promising and on schedule. After screening over 150 applicants, The Hollins Group Inc., presented 18 candidates to the search committee in late January 2002. Preliminary interviews have already begun and a search committee recommendation is expected to be made to the Trustees at the April Board meeting.

pelman College has had a strong sense of community for 121 years. Our roots in the community are as present now as they were when Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles began teaching black women in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church. We are rooted academically. We are rooted socially – and we are rooted spiritually. Sisters Chapel helps us to foster that sense of community with its Sunday worship services and special events. The chapel represents our spiritual well being and plays a vital role in nurturing women at Spelman. It is to Sisters Chapel – the very heart and soul of the campus – that we flock to for solace. Our faculty, students and alumnae keep us linked to the community through various service projects. In fact, more than 50% of Spelman students are active in some kind of community service project – whether it’s mentoring high school students, being involved in environmental preservation or feeding the hungry. The Office of Community Service provides a wide range of service opportunities for all Spelman women. It aims to integrate service into each student’s education. This innovative approach to learning is evident in Spelman’s curriculum. For example, Eminent Scholar’s Chair in Scholarship and Service Dr. Gloria Wade Gayles’ “Honoring Our Elders” outreach program links 16 Spelman students with elders across Atlanta. The students are recording a collection of oral histories with these elders, which will be donated to the Spelman Archives. Beacon Press will publish the writings from these interviews. Dr. M. Bahati Kuumba, assistant director of the Women’s Center, teaches a course called “Women and Social Resistance Movements,” that inspires students to look at constructive ways to grow and develop as activists. The course demonstrates that although students and staff cannot stand up for issues as individuals on behalf of the College, they can serve as activists in the greater public. To ensure the voices of our constituents in surrounding neighborhoods are heard, Spelman has hosted summits. The College has also produced programs that focus on a healthier community. Our students participate in regularly scheduled blood drives. Also, the Health Careers Program has conducted health fairs at West End Mall – offering free blood pressure checks and other services. As we commence our Founders Day 2002 celebration and the many activities leading to Commencement, we invite our constituents to join us. The Grand Opening of the Science Center, the Founders Day Convocation and Presidential Worship Tribute will make this the best Founders Week ever. In addition, the multimedia stage production “Flying Over Purgatory” – featuring famed Civil Rights activist and actress Ruby Dee and South African actress Mabel Mafuya – will showcase the talents of our first Cosby Chair of Fine Arts Professor Ayoka Chenzira. The play debuts April 18-21 at Baldwin Burroughs Theater. Opening our gates to the greater public educates Spelman and keeps the College at the pulse of community issues. As the public is educated about the College, it learns about Spelman’s impact locally, nationally and internationally. In the undaunted spirit of our founders, let the legacy live on.

Manley, the project is conceived as a holistic effort that will integrate physical, mental and spiritual health issues with gender-, race-, and culture-specific tools to reshape the attitudes and behaviors of young African American women, ages 18 – 22. Plans are underway now for student participation in fall 2002.

V.I.P.’s Attend Private Screening of Keep The Faith Baby, an Original Showtime Production The life and work of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was depicted during a private screening of the Showtime Original movie, Keep The Faith Baby, starring Harry Lennix. Adam Clayton Powell III and Harry Lennix were in attendance.

Harlem Boys Choir Performed in Sisters Chapel On Martin Luther King’s Birthday The Grammy Concert for Young People is a program designed to introduce urban elementary students to the various styles of jazz music in a live interactive setting. Sponsored by Target, Inc., the group of approximately 20 boys delighted a grade school audience, K – 8, along with President Audrey Manley and Mrs. Coretta Scott King.

Fulfilling Dreams Through Giving A

$1,500 scholarship sponsored by Texaco Corporation will be named in honor of this year’s lucky winner Geneva Watson-Dean C’59, whose name was pulled in a drawing as part of a special incentive to increase alumnae giving. Alumnae who participated in the Fall Telefund and paid their pledges by December 31, 2001 became eligible for a drawing to name a scholarship in their honor. The Geneva Watson-Dean/Texaco Scholarship will provide financial assistance to a deserving student to help cover tuition costs. Mrs. Watson-Dean, an educator, journalist, and recipient of many awards, stated that helping students to achieve is one of her greatest joys. “We should not be able to walk the streets in peace unless we educate and help others,” she added. This year’s Telefund recorded $212,486

in pledges from alumnae for the Annual Fund. In fact, as demonstrated by Mrs. Watson-Dean, when every pledge is fulfilled, even more students have an opportunity to receive need-based scholarships—not to mention, more dollars for technology, curriculum and faculty development, and student services. Alumnae are encouraged to participate in this year’s Annual Fund, either by fulfilling telefund pledges made or making outright gifts. Remember every gift counts toward increasing the alumnae participation rate. Each gift ensures an affordable and exceptional education for Spelman students. For your convenience, a postage-paid envelope has been inserted into this issue of Inside Spelman so you will be able to send in your gift before June 30, 2002 and help to fullfill dreams.

Revival of the Spirit: Sisters Chapel Update

S

pelman College launched its efforts to preserve historic Sisters Chapel with the goal of raising $4 million. To date, the College has raised $2.6 million from alumnae, individuals and a select group of private foundations that share a vested interest in preserving Sisters Chapel. The effort has consisted of two phases. The first phase was an endeavor to match a $625,000 challenge grant from an anonymous foundation. That was completed in 1998 and served as a catalyst for launching, Revival of the Spirit: The Campaign for the Renovation and Preservation of Sisters Chapel. With only $1.4 million to go, the Revival of the Spirit continues.

With only $1.4 million to go, the Revival of the Spirit continues.

The money raised will enable the College to:

• Air condition the facility for the first time • Install public restrooms • Repair the roof and other structural deterioration • Update the wiring to accommodate technology • Restore and replace furniture and fixtures Sisters Chapel must be preserved to provide future generations of students and friends of the College the spiritual, historical and cultural experiences that are uniquely Spelman. Keep those checks coming!
