Mayor and Council staff raise over £2K through ‘Grow-Mo’! THE Mayor of Ards, together with his deputy and more than a dozen Ards Borough Council staff, have raised over £2,000 from their ‘Grow-Mo’ efforts. All grew moustaches or beards - or both! – in November in a bid to raise funds and awareness of men’s health issues and have now presented a cheque for £2,451.27 to Action Cancer, for the charity’s Action Man campaign. The campaign encourages men to ‘Get A Grip’ and take their health seriously, and Action Cancer’s services include free MOT health checks for men and education about testicular and prostate cancer. The Mayor, Councillor Stephen McIlveen, said: “This was a fantastic result from our male members of staff who were committed, not only to growing their facial hair, but to out-doing each other in the process – and some have found

it difficult to get back to using a razor and seem to be starting early for this year! The fun and the friendly rivalry didn’t diminish the serious message, nor the serious fund-raising and I’m delighted with that a local cancer charity will now benefit”. Sinead Magill from Action Cancer added: “We are extremely grateful for the support of our Grow Mo fundraiser as it enables us to provide more MOT health checks. This is vital as men have a 16% greater chance of developing cancer than women and can be reluctant about visiting the GP.” MOT health checks include indicators of health including cholesterol and glucose levels, blood pressure, lung function, and full body composition analysis. A free health check can be booked on the Big Bus or at Action Cancer House by calling the charity on 028 9080 3344 or booking on-line at www.actioncancer.org.
