Twenty-five percent growth in registrations, again. The first interbreed championships awarded to Speckle Park, on two continents. And, another sale record broken. Speckle Park continue to reach new heights! The past year also saw a dramatic increase in exchange of genetics across borders. Certainly, this holds enormous potential for Speckle Park in terms of breed development. Though the genetic base is still relatively small, there are significant differences in the ways bloodlines have been combined from breeder to breeder and from country to country. The opportunity to access unique genetics, and tailor mating decisions to individual herds’ specific needs, can prove instrumental in enhancing strengths and building upon areas for improvement. This “Breeding Book” issue supports the breed development quest with our third International Semen & Embryo Directory (find it as the centre pull out section), which features several new A.I. sires and donor females from around the globe. Renowned judge Lance Leachman also takes us through evaluating and prioritizing phenotype in cattle, and Dr. Roy Lewis outlines the benefits of pulling on-farm semen as genetic insurance on new and proven herd sires. In addition to frozen genetics, several sales advertised in this issue will be offering the breeders’ best from their bull and replacement heifer pens. No doubt, there will be individuals acquired in the next few months whose names will be long remembered for their impact. Here is to another step forward and up with the next calf crop – cheers! Someone commented recently that, “Speckle Park are at a turning point!” Speckle Park have always been, always are, and always will be at a turning point. And, as long as they keep turning right and make a full circle, and each circle moves up one level in vertical spiral, Speckle Park will continue to reach new heights through a series of stepping stones. The breed is steadily increasing its presence across the industry. An inspector at a major processing plant recently spoke to how many more speckled animals are now coming down the line. The owner of a 300head, commercial cow-calf operation tells me that they sell their speckled feeders because the premium is so good, while feeding out the rest of the calf crop in their own lot. Semen suppliers to Canada’s dairy herds are now actively seeking out Speckle Park genetics. Two sale reports in this issue illustrate how Speckle Park-influenced feeders are bringing a premium in well-organized pre-sort sales that feature large lots. And yet there remain places where Speckle Park are not! We still have work to do; this is no time to sit back. To this end, the CSPA is increasing its presence at industry events across the country: three events each year in Ontario, two in British Columbia, two in Alberta, and two in Saskatchewan. For 2018, your directors are also considering booth space at the Ag in Motion event in Saskatoon, Sask., and the Royal Agricultural Societies of the Commonwealth biennial meeting to take place in conjunction with Farmfair International at Edmonton, Alta. The association encourages breeders to promote Speckle Park at their local events as well, and is happy to provide copies of this magazine, brochures, and other breed specific material upon request.

Breed improvement is of special interest to the CSPA directors. To further advance the quality and consistency of the breed’s genetics, and after listening to concerns of breeders and commercial users alike, the CSPA sponsored an initiative encouraging breeders to DNA test their breeding stock for three genetic conditions. The purpose of the program is twofold: to assess the frequency of these conditions within the breed itself, and to help breeders make more informed decisions in their breeding programs. Ultimately, this is about supplying commercial cattlemen with the most profitable genetics possible. The program also included a 21K SNP panel for genomic evaluation of Speckle Park in the future. It is funded in part by Canadian Agriculture Adaptation Program. Also in response to the demands of commercial producers, the association’s directors have revised the age-specific, minimum standards for scrotal circumference of Speckle Park bulls. The new standards increase the minimums at each age level by 1 cm, effective January 1, 2019. In 2021, the standards will increase an additional 1 cm. These changes are intended to set goals for breeders and to provide buyers with realistic and definitive expectations. Full details are available online in the Members’ Centre section at www.canadianspecklepark.com. What’s the next turning point for Speckle Park? The road continues upward. The association’s directors, after consulting the members, are in the process of finalizing a five-year strategic plan. They are also engaging an outside, third-party consultant to determine the next steps to provide Speckle Park with expected progeny differences. Come climb with us!

In approaching the subject of breeding cattle selection, it is important to note that judging is a highly subjective practice with each producer holding a unique perspective based on their environment, resources, marketing practices and customer preferences. However, in regards to visual appraisal, I will combine characteristics into six big-picture categories that I personally address when evaluating cattle. Those categories would include: 1) Structure and balance 2) Muscle and body dimension 3) Balance and quality 4) Condition 5) Performance 6) Masculinity/female character Although the sequence of importance and priority can be arranged differently among these, I would argue that structure should be the most important criteria, particularly in breeding cattle. The following summary of each category further illustrates what one might consider.

8

T H E S P E C K L E PA R K J O U R N A L

1) STRUCTURE AND BALANCE As ruminants, cattle have the unique ability to thrive in extremely variable environments on a diverse array of feedstuffs. Cattle can be exposed to environments that demand covering expansive areas to graze and water. As such, structure is critical in proper function, production and longevity. Integrity of the skeleton provides the foundation from which other characteristics develop. One simple assessment of structure would include looking at cattle from the profile and determining if the hind foot meets the indentation in the ground left from the front foot during a normal stride. If so, the animal is likely correct and free moving. Cattle that may exceed the step could potentially be sickle hocked or have excessive set/curvature to the hock, causing them to overextend and get under themselves with their hind leg. Cattle that come up short of meeting their stride may be post legged or straight/rigid in the angle to their hock. Another common practice is to view cattle from the

front and rear to determine the alignment of their legs to the ground. Like most people, cattle normally turn their feet slightly outward on both ends of their skeleton. However, cattle that turn outward excessively can be deemed splay footed off the front feet and cow hocked on the rear legs, suggesting the hocks become closer than ideal. Conversely, cattle that turn their feet excessively inward on the front legs can be called pigeon toed. At their foundation, a deep heel and consistent shape of both claws of the hoof lends itself to soundness. Sometimes cattle that are poor in the alignment of their legs may unevenly wear their hooves. This may be seen in the inside claws of cattle that are close at the knee or outside claws of cattle that are bow legged off the rear for example. Angle to the shoulder and pasterns should be intermediate in degree, relaxed enough to allow flex and cushion to maintain soundness, but upright or strong enough to prevent ligaments and tendons from becoming too weak. Generally Rib cage capacity can often best be evaluated from the speaking, cattle that are high in their neck-to-shoulder profile in terms of depth and uniformity of that depth from attachment and relaxed in the angle to their shoulder will the forerib, to the mid-rib and back to the flank. From the take a long stride out of their front shoulder. Typically, cattle rear, boldness and sweep to the ribcage as it originates from that are level hipped or slightly slope from hooks to pins, the spine can be assessed. It is worth mentioning that cattle along with an intermediate set to their hock will stride freely can be deep bodied but flat sided, or conversely appear off the rear. Many times, cattle that are correct in their angles shallow while having excellent curvature to their rib. will maintain a level or flexible spine. The opposite of this 3) BALANCE AND QUALITY This is an overall can be seen with cattle that are too steep or straight in their assessment of the animal that has great impact on a first joints. Many straight shouldered cattle will be low in their impression and ties together most of the other factors in head carriage, appear short necked, may buck over at the this list. Generally though, it refers to the proportions, knee, be rigid or high in their spine, or straight in their hock, design, eye appeal and completeness of the animal. Some culminating in a shorter, labored, abrupt stride. factors that affect balance are a combination of structural 2) MUSCLE AND BODY DIMENSION These correctness and aesthetics, which may include: neck-tocharacteristics can be assessed in three measures: length, shoulder attachment, length of front, smoothness of width, and height. There may be as much variance in shoulder, levelness of top and bottom lines, length and opinion about the optimum size of mature cattle as any trait levelness of hip, set of hind leg, uniformity of body depth, in cattle. My personal viewpoint is etc. Balance is a more vague that cattle of intermediate frame factor, but cattle that tend to be that are long sided and wide based more “striking” or have more provide a versatile starting point. “presence” in terms of design and Lance Leachman owns and operates Big Gully Farm at Maidstone, Sask., History shows that it is human appeal will often be well balanced raising Horned and Polled Hereford nature to exceed optimum and and high quality. Where to assess muscle would be behind the shoulder and along as muscle tends to have a round, defined shape; fat tends the back in regard to width and squareness. how soft the animal “handles.” Continuing back to the pin bones, the small balls of fat referred to as pones are a strong indicator of extra condition, often viewed in mature cows with extra body condition. Moving down on the animal to the flank provides a good measure of condition when assessing how full and soft the folds of skin at the flank are. As mentioned before, condition is last accumulated in the lower one-third of the body, so animals whose bellies jiggle or ripple, and have excessive udder fullness at a young age, may display excessive condition. The amount of condition on animals at various stages of life is highly debateable, but intermediate or optimal

body condition likely is ideal in that the animal has enough condition to have met growth requirements, with the ability to conceive and lactate proficiently. However, the animal should be moderate enough in condition to not pose problems for breeding, calving and mammary development. Making strong opinions of condition on other’s cattle can be difficult and unwise, unless the exact management, rations and fleshing ability of the particular animals have been witnessed. Some cattle with extra condition are extremely efficient with a limited amount of feed. Others that appear lean, may have been fed extremely heavily, but don’t have the ability to convert as efficiently. 5) PERFORMANCE refers to the growth or rate of gain that animals possess. bull01 bull02 The slicker-haired bull is attractive in his condition and clean in his chest floor. He is bold sided and muscular in the turn to his hip, with adequate bone and a correct testicular suspension. Structurally, he appears straighter in the angle to his shoulder and more forward in the set to his knee than ideal. This, coupled with standing underneath himself on the fore front foot suggests he could be more mobile up front. Off the rear, he also appears more rigid in his hock and is steep on both his front and rear pasterns, posing a bit more concern in how he would travel when in set in motion.

The speckle-hipped bull is big ribbed and stout featured. He is masculine in his crest and shoulder with plenty of dimension to his forearm. From there rearward, he is full in the forerib, deep middle, and exhibits a powerful turn to his quarter from the profile. Going to the ground, he appears stout boned, although potentially straighter in his hind leg. He could be a touch longer in his hip and perhaps a bit higher in his pins. Of the four, he may also be the heaviest conditioned in his chest and back to his pins.

The black-shouldered bull appears muscular in the shape to his forearm, top and hip. Plus, he opens up with a square turn to his top from the backside of his shoulder, while being deep sided and outward in the curvature to his ribcage. He also appears tidy and tight in his sheath attachment. The black-headed bull does appear a bit more compact, perhaps being more elevated in the angle to his shoulder, shorter fronted and hipped, with a lower pin placement. From the profile, he may have a bit more set to his hock than ideal, but likely is still very functional.

The primarily-white bull is the most attractive in regards to his skeletal length, quality, and balance. He is high and correct in his neck-to-shoulder attachment, and correct in the angle to his shoulder. He appears deep and full in his forerib, and bold through his center body. He transitions to a long, level-designed hip with a functional set to his hind leg. He appears more conservative in his substance of bone and a bit shallow flanked, but considering he is standing in less straw and appears moderate in his condition, it shouldn’t likely be a major concern.

same age, exposed to the same environment and supplied with the same nutritional resources, normally the fastergrowing, higher-performing cattle will have an advantage in being able to be sold at heavier weights or spending fewer days on feed in a backgrounding or finishing scenario. Opinions on how the growth curve or maturity pattern in cattle should develop are variable, but Canadian producers tend to value growth, since it allows the accumulation of more pounds of feeder calf to sell at weaning or after a certain period of time backgrounding. American producers likely pay more attention to performance, coupled with carcass characteristics, especially when they retain ownership of cattle or finish their own cattle. 6) MASCULINITY/FEMALE CHARACTER This category simply refers to the sexual differences that should normally be apparent between males and females within a herd. Bulls will normally be heavier weight, stouter boned and have more muscle mass and definition. Moreover, a broader eye set and crest development on their neck should be apparent. Testicular size, suspension and shape are also considerations related to masculinity from a bull standpoint. The tidiness and close proximity of a bull’s sheath to his belly is a strong consideration of many breeders to prevent breeding injuries. Maternally, heifers and cows will likely be more modest in bone and muscle, narrower skulled, smaller in stature and lighter weight. Females should be narrower in their shoulders and hips as well. The correct levelness, suspension, teat refinement and spacing of an udder can be tremendously beneficial convenience trait related to maternal character. Other selection criteria that appear minor, but can have a big impact on people’s perception of the animal’s usefulness are worth mentioning. Many people prefer an abundance of hair on cattle in the winter to survive harsh conditions, yet the ability to shed that hair in the summer to maintain a healthy appearance. Docility and calf vigor are other convenience traits that we know are critical, but are more difficult to put an economic value on. This is not to mention the traits that are difficult to assess visually: carcass merit, feed efficiency, fertility, and several others would fall in this category. I would also encourage you to incorporate many other sources of information into your selection procedures. These would include pedigrees, performance data, expected progeny differences, carcass ultrasound, feed efficiency, and genomically-enhanced breeding values. While no single piece of information may prove foolproof or a sure thing, cumulatively, a greater volume of accurate information assists in ensuring more predictable and lower risk selection decisions. A thought worth noting is the idea of “optimums” in regard to selection. My personal opinion is that when selection becomes too extreme, no matter the number of traits or direction involved, problems and antagonistic relationships present themselves that may pose more problems than benefit. I want to address several that I think can be currently assessed in the beef industry. A) Selection for extreme growth and performance can potentially consume substantial resources, lead to larger mature weight, or stress and compromise the structural integrity of the cattle based on the weight or condition they are bearing. Selection on the optimal maturity pattern of cattle to achieve desired results at each stage of production is an interesting goal for many. Often times, we continued on the next page >

In a top pair of contrasting-type bulls, I utilized the added skeletal extension, balance and structural integrity of the primarily-white bull over the stouter boned, more expressively muscled No. 2. He is striking from the profile, youthful in his appearance and more importantly, the angle to his shoulder and lower joints would suggest he should be relatively agile on the move. There is no doubt that No. 2 appears heavier boned and more expressive in his shape of muscle, and although not totally evident, may be one of the biggest testicled bulls. Nonetheless, he is also shorter bodied, lower pinned, and straighter hocked. In a more similar middle pair of bulls with extra shape, center body dimension, and depth of flank, but that are both shorter coupled, more compact and slightly heavier conditioned, I elected to use the more upheaded No. 2 bull. He appears a notch

do a poor job as an industry of evaluating the inputs or efficiencies related to outputs that are easily determined. B) Another example has been selection for extremely low birth weights and a corresponding reduction in gestation length, which in isolated cases may lead to calves not fully developed and with lower survivability. Perhaps calving ease is a more useful consideration here. C) Selection for extreme muscle dimension can reduce structural integrity because the animal may become too bold shouldered, short striding, or rigid in their joints based on the shear amount of muscle that prevents the flexibility and mobility necessary for sustained longevity. D) Many years ago, selection for extreme frame led to cattle that were poor structured due to their joints increasing in angle, but that were also difficult to maintain body condition on because of their extended growth

more extended from his shoulder forward, stouter boned and more dimensional in his forearm. I do prefer the skull and throat latch of No. 3, while also preferring his sheath attachment. However, he remains the poorer balanced, short-hipped bull that is more excessive in the set to his hock. In a concluding pair of bulls that appear presented in different environments, I was more comfortable with the skeleton, performance and dimension of No. 3 over No. 1. Although not ideal, I believe he is still more functional in his lower joints due to being set further back at his knee, with more angle to his hocks, and likely pasterns as well. The trim condition, clean sheath and muscular shape that No. 1 possesses are ideal, however he could likely benefit from structural modifications to the set and angles of his joints off both ends of his skeleton.

curve. This, therefore, compromises fat cover of carcasses, ability to rebreed, or milking capability in some cases. On the other extreme, “belt buckle” cattle of the mid-20th century were early maturing, low yielding from a product standpoint, and possessed a wasteful body composition considering the excessive fat they were carrying, relative to the saleable amount of red meat. I think balanced selection for all traits described is perfectly acceptable depending on each producer’s breeding objectives. These are thoughts to keep in mind, as it is typically human nature to exceed the optimum in search of the extremes that may be thought of as more marketable, profitable or recognizable at the time. It takes confidence and self assurance to not overshoot these boundaries of trait expression, but many established producers note that, “staying near the middle allows the pendulum to pass by you twice.” SPJ

D I R E C T O R Y As the international boundaries begin to disappear in the exchange of Speckle Park genetics, it’s exciting to consider the potential for what is to come in terms of breed development. Even with a comparatively small gene pool, the combinations in which breeders around the globe have chosen to match available sires and dams create a plethora of options for matings to advance every herd.

Following with the exponential growth in herdbook registrations, there are ever more new A.I. sires and donor dams from which to access breed-leading genetics. This, coupled with increased data collection and genomic test results, can help guide selection and mating decisions to suit any individual operations’ environments and markets. As you compare and contrast the genetics available, we encourage you to dig deeper – check out the breeders’ websites, call them discuss your program’s specific needs, or even get out and visit their herds to view progeny and related animals. It’s a well-known fact that cattlemen and women love to “talk stock,” and will be happy to help you find the best fit for your needs.

All Out is a two-time national champion at Agribition and will return in 2018 to compete as a senior bull. He is the only Speckle Park bull to date that has been shown across Canada and gone undefeated against any same-age Speckle Park bull. He comes from a great Spots ‘N Sprouts production dam that’s a real milk maker. All Out tested homo polled and homo black. He now has offspring on the ground to prove he can be used across heifers and cows and he’s passing beautiful colour with exceptional structure.

successful FEEDER SALES november 20, 2017 // lloydminster, sk

northern livestock sales

On Novmber 20th, the real work of the commercial cattlemen brought a handsome return at Northern Livestock Sales, Lloydminster, Sask., while the National Speckle Park Show was taking place at Canadian Western Agribition. On this day, a total 454 Speckle Park-influenced calves went through the sale and into feeder programs. The speckled steers consistently out sold the black and continental calves by more than a dime, and the heifers brought up to a 40-cent premium. Note: Prices for the Speckle Park lots are the actual prices. The average price per hundred weight for the “black and continental” cattle is the average of the good cattle in that weight group.

WINS McAleer Ranching of Unity, Sask., achieved a first for Speckle Park in Canada with their interbreed wins at the Peace Country Bull Congress at Dawson Creek, B.C., which took place in January. Not only did their pen of three bulls capture grand champion honours under judge Kolby Heaven, but D.A.M. Dots 94A Electric 31E was also awarded the Grand Champion Cattlemen’s Choice banner by a panel of five judges. Electric 31E is a son of River

Hill 12X A’Man 94A, and is co-owned with Lehr Ranching, North Battleford, Sask. The bull has been well decorated over his show career thus far, both in the bull calf division and at side of his mother in the female classes. At Farmfair International in Edmonton, Alta., he was awarded Reserve Grand Champion Bull after winning the bull calf division, was a member of the Champion Bull Calf Pair, and was also the Legends of the Fall Speckle Park Bull Champion. In the National Show at Canadian Western Agribition, Regina, Sask., D.A.M. Dots 94A Electric 31E himself won Reserve Champion Bull Calf, and was again part of the Pair of Bulls Champion entry. Alongside his dam, they took the Grand Champion Female banner after being named Senior Champion Female.

After purchasing their first Speckle Park in 2006, Scott and his wife Darla have been stalwarts for the breed. In addition to serving on the board of directors since 2013, and as president in 2015-2016, Scott also filled the role of barn boss and represented the interests of the breed to Canadian Western Agribition. on farm

semen collection

This is the time of year when one’s own hot breeding prospects and new bulls being offered for sale are coming to the forefront. Collecting semen on these new prospects and proven sires can prove a valuable insurance program, should any unfortunate incident result in their inability to breed naturally. This article will review some of the finer points of on-farm semen collection for those who haven’t experience with it, in order to help make the decision easier. It must be noted that on farm semen collection is only for owner use. If multiple persons/farms are partners in a syndicated bull, each owner can receive semen, but the semen cannot be resold commercially. On-farm collection has evolved greatly over the past several years to involve much less testing for disease than the original requirements called for – no longer do we need to test for brucellosis. Now, simple reporting to the government is all that is necessary. With a valuable bull, on-farm collection becomes like an insurance plan, preserving the genetics of that bull for future use in the event he is sold, dies, becomes incapable of natural service, or his testicles degenerate. There are a myriad of things that could result in a bull becoming incapable of breeding. Semen in the tank is breeding insurance into the distant future, if the bull’s genetics are important to maintain in your breeding program. However, you still may want to insure the bull through the normal channels so he can be replaced in the event some unforeseen event happens. On-farm collection is similar in process to a semen evaluation, but there are many further steps taken. In fact, in my opinion, it is very important to complete a breeding soundness evaluation within two weeks prior to help ensure success of the collection. A BSE will ensure the semen is fresh, is very low in defects, and that an adequate volume can be collected to make it worthwhile. There are three avenues for collection. Your first option is a small number of accredited private veterinarians in the Western provinces who collect semen on farm. The second is utilizing commercial studs’ on-farm collection, 28

which is often offered as a day service whereby the bull is transported to them, collected, and returned home. Again, the tests are avoided for owner-use only semen, but for resale in Canada or any other country, appropriate testing must be done by your accredited veterinarian and the collection made at an A.I. stud that is appropriately certified and has quarantine facilities. The semen must then be quarantined, stored, and distributed out of these facilities when sold. The third avenue for on-farm collection allows private veterinarians to collect and extend the semen, then ship it via courier in specially designed containers that chill the semen en route. This may be simpler for the producer, but there are many variables out of our control such as speed of the courier and ambient temperatures. Often, the semen is then chilled for at least a day before processing. In remote locations this may be an option, but be warned the failure rate is definitely higher than direct on-farm collection. Private veterinarians will use an electroejaculator like they do for normal testing, but the objective is to stimulate longer in order to get the maximum amount. The sample will still be evaluated for motility and morphology. I like a high standard for morphological defects (less than 20 percent), and keeping the semen warm (35-38 C) is critical at this point. A count is done to determine the concentration (number of sperm per ml) and based on the volume collected, a final calculation gives us the number of straws to put up. The goal is to strive for 10 million live sperm per straw, taking into account the freezing and thawing process will kill up to half of the live sperm (some sperm are dead to start with). Most times, 30-50 million sperm are put up in each straw. More is not always better, as too many sperm concentrated leads to detrimental results. The semen is diluted to the proper concentration using a commercial semen extender product, mixed in exact proportions with egg yolk and distilled water. Once diluted properly with extender, the semen is gradually chilled over at least a three-hour period, and is

Another timed process has the semen gradually frozen in liquid nitrogen. The straws are then loaded into canes, which are also properly labelled and placed in your tank. The final test is performing a post-thaw evaluation on the semen to ensure it survives well enough through the freezing process. This is where all the hard work hopefully pays off. Some bull’s semen simply does not freeze well, and even though all the parameters are good going in, the post thaw fails and the semen must be destroyed. You need certain criteria on frozen semen or conception rates suffer and that would be more disastrous than discarding some semen. Costs are generally based on a collection fee and a perstraw fee for putting up the semen. A.I. is increasing in popularity because of synchronization programs for both commercial and purebred producers. This is where having semen in the tank from your best quality bulls will give you the most genetic gain and insurance in case something happens to that valuable herd sire. Purebred producers can also collect top yearling prospects before they are sold in order to preserve the genetics in their herd. Have a great breeding season everyone and may all the sperm swim straight. SPJ
