WELCOME TO THE FEZTIVAL OF TREES

Greetings and happy holidays to one and all! The holiday season is upon us again. What a wonderful time of year it is to share with family and friends all that is good in our lives. At Kora Shrine Center we share in the warm feeling of this time of the year and celebrate this magical event called the FEZtival of Trees. This will be our seventh year of hosting this great gathering which is the premier holiday event in Central Maine. We hope that you will take the time to stop by our Shrine Center to take part in all or a portion of the week’s activities. Of course, the beautifully decorated building and trees will be there all week, but we have entertainers coming to perform at different times during the week as well. And don’t forget Santa Claus! He will be there to greet children of all ages and a picture with Santa will provide a lasting memory. Kora Shrine Center is one of the most iconic buildings in the Central Maine area and we hope that you will visit our FEZtival to enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season, but also take the time to view the magnificent interior of this building. It is on the National Historic Register and sits at a prominent location in Lewiston. If you have an interest, Shriners will be available to talk with you about the special features of the building.

KORA FLAG UNIT

The FEZtival of Trees began seven years ago as a fundraiser to keep this majestic building in operation in order to continue its work and each year it has surpassed the year before. Starting with 23 trees and 2500 visitors the first year, it has grown to over 70 trees with 20,000 visitors last year.

Potentate Barry Gates feels that while the building itself is worth the trip, the trees rea lly ma ke it a ra re a nd matchless event. “The tree sponsors have outdone themselves year after year, and I’m sure this one w ill prove to be no exception,” said Gates. “They truly embrace the idea of creating a new and exceptional theme for their tree; making each year a distinctive and unique experience.” “We have some groups that compete against each other to have t he most popular tree ! ” he smiled. “We are v e r y f or t u n a t e t o h a v e such suppor t f rom loc a l businesses, organizations and Shrine Clubs.” The t heme for t his yea r’s FEZtival is A Maine Coastal Christmas. The stage will be decorated in an enchanted Downeast motif. Lighthouses, lobster traps, fish netting, garland and buoys will be seen all throughout the historical building, turning it

Kora's 'Love to the Rescue' By Caitlin Bazinet

My name is Caitlin Bazinet and my 18th birthday was a life-changing day for me. After partying with friends I lost control of my car and drove through a fence, hitting a telephone pole and then a tree and flipping over. My car caught on fire and exploded. I was trapped inside thinking sure that death was my fate. After 45 minutes firefighters f ina l ly got me out, I was Life-f lighted to CMMC and t hen L i fe-f l ig hte d dow n to Massachusetts Genera l Hospital. After more than 25 surgeries and two months I came out of an induced coma to learn that I’d gotten 4thdegree burns on 75 percent of my body, and had lost my hands and feet.

I ended up at the Shriner’s Hospita l for Chi ldren for further burn care, where I had to relearn how to walk, talk and feed myself all over again. They didn’t just care for my hea lth, they cared about me. Be c au se of t he Sh r i ner s staff pushing me to achieve my goa ls, I reached most of them before I was even d ischa rged. T hey helped me with my school work so that I could graduate with my class. Four days before graduation I went home with a pair of legs so I could walk with my classmates. I have had a ver y specia l bond with many of the Kora members since I first met most of them in the hospital. From day one, I knew I could cou nt on t hem a nd t hey

ne v er onc e doubte d my capabi lit ies, even when I did. They’ve watched me as I’ve grown and progressed and five of my Shriner family members even attended my graduation back home. T hey have been w it h me whenever I needed t hem; they have been a friend, a shoulder to cry on or just a good laugh. In turn, I’ve attended and spoken at ma ny of Kora’s events and I’ve been honored t o b e a ble t o h a v e t he opportunity to do all these amazing things. Recently I was selected nationally to be a spokesperson for an ad campaign for the Shriner’s hospitals. With Kora’s help, I’ve been able to do that.

Springfield, Massachusetts for my prosthetic dev ices, giving me the best prosthetics w ith the most comfortable fit so I can live a normal life ... and today I can say I do thanks to them and my friends at Kora. Besides bei ng a nat iona l spokesperson for t he hospital, I have a job as a Greeter at Ma ine Genera l Medical Center and I also speak to high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving. My life may have taken a terrible turn, but my f uture is promising thanks to my friends at the Shriner’s Hospital and my family at Kora. That’s why they call it “Love to the Rescue.”

Now I go to t he Shr iners Hospit a l for C h i ld ren i n
