DORDOGNE CAVE ART Explore a range of stunning prehistoric cave sites 6 Days

From £2,395pp

Departing May & September 2021

Activity Level

Famed for its caves, the Dordogne Valley is renowned for being home to some of the earliest and finest examples of prehistoric cave art. What’s more, on this trip to rural France we will also discover picturesque villages, sensational cuisine and a wealth of history. Vividly brought to life in ochre and charcoal are wild animals and human figures up to 30,000 years old. Our guide lecturers will tell the story of the art, its discovery and what is known of the people who created it. We will see a number of these world-famous rock art sites, taking you as close to the lives of our most remote Ice Age ancestors as possible. Guided by Dr Rob Dinnis

We will explore the small rock shelter known as Abri du Poisson, the fascinating site of Laugerie Haute, the rock shelter at Cap Blanc, the newly established Lascaux IV centre, the park at Le Thot where animals that would have been extant in the Ice Age are bred and kept, the cave system of Rouffignac, the decorated cave of Font de Gaume, two caves in Cougnac, and finally Pech Merle with its handprints and painted black outlines of aurochs, mammoth, spotted-horses. During each visit, our expert guide will bring the images vividly to life and the gap between us and our antecedents will be bridged.

Join Rob in the Dordogne on our May departure.

Guided by Dr Paul Bahn Join Paul in the Dordogne on our September departure.
