SPECIAL CONCERTS ST. PETE BAROQUE SUNDAY, JANUARY 21 AT 5:00 PM TICKETS: $25, RECEPTION TO FOLLOW One of the Cathedral’s favorite musical groups, St. Pete Baroque, will make its fourth appearance with a concert titled “Cabinet of Curiosities.” St. Pete Baroque performs on historical instruments that are set up as they were during the Baroque period (16001750): gut strings, baroque bows, and unique instruments that are not found in modern day musical settings — harpsichord, lute, viola da gamba, viola d’amore, and baroque winds. St. Pete Baroque is dedicated to giving new life to old masterpieces, giving a voice to newly discovered works, and bringing audiences the eccentric and improvisatory nature of baroque music. Their concert will offer works by Buxtehude; Josef Fuchs (a recently discovered work for solo viola d’amore); Biber; Handel; Ortiz; and Rossi Salamone, an Italian Jewish composer who wrote cantatas in Hebrew.

TESLA QUARTET FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16 AT 7:30 PM TICKETS: $15, RECEPTION TO FOLLOW The Tesla Quartet is known the world over for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of era, style, or technical demand” (The International Review of Music). From cutting edge contemporary works to established masterpieces, the Tesla Quartet’s emotive and thoughtful interpretations reveal the ensemble’s deep commitment to the craft and to their ever expanding repertoire. The quartet recognizes the power of their platform to amplify underrepresented voices and to encourage the proliferation of an equitable and just future. During the pandemic the quartet provided weekly virtual concerts to cheer on the healthcare heroes of the New York Presbyterian Hospital network. To support the musical community during the Covid years, they commissioned 12 works by composers from across North America. Now they are focused on inspiring climate action with the commissions of several works for string quartet that touch on different aspects of the climate crisis and recovery.

AFRO OPERA: A MESSAGE FROM THE ROOTS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24 AT 6:00 PM TICKETS: $20-60, RECEPTION TO FOLLOW The event will feature an all African American cast, operatic sounds to enjoy, classical instrumental sounds, and performances of spirituals and art songs written by all African American composers. The performance of spirituals and operatic art songs will help educate, enlighten, and expose a wide range of individuals to the beauty of classical music. Accompanist Austin Gaskin has been invited in from St. Louis, Missouri. Maiya Stevenson and Teia Watson are featured as opera singers for the evening. Those who purchase VIP tickets will be invited to attend a reception where they can “meet and greet” the artist after the show.

ABSALOM JONES SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10 Afro-Centric Liturgical Music Workshop | 1:00-2:00 pm Service of Music and Readings | 2:30 pm Festive reception to follow The John E. Culmer Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians, St. James House of Prayer, St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, and the Diocese of Southwest Florida invites you to an interactive workshop on Afro-Centric liturgical music led by Dr. Carl MaultsBy, followed by a Service of Music and Readings to honor the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first Black Episcopal priest. Carl MaultsBy, DFA, is a composer, conductor, keyboardist, singer, author, producer and teacher. A native of Orlando, he currently serves as the Director of Music/Organist at St. Richard’s Episcopal Church in Winter Park, Florida. Dr MaultsBy has published several books and original compositions. You can view a complete biography here. His workshop will integrate African diasporic musical and cultural elements of contemporary and traditional gospel and spiritual music, Caribbean and blues. This interactive forum seeks to increase understanding of and appreciation for the pivotal contributions of diasporic music in Episcopal worship.

Carl MaultsBy, DFA

For those seeking to become more familiar with Afro-Centric music and how it can be incorporated into worship, and for those who love music, all are encouraged to attend. During the workshop, Dr. MaultsBy, with vocalist Vanessa Hawkins, will highlight and demonstrate many of the pieces that will be sung during the service.

Following the workshop, there will be a Service of Music and Readings to honor the life and legacy of Absalom Jones. This service will include readings from influential Black voices in the Episcopal Church, such as the Most Reverend Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, and Pauli Murray, the first African-American woman ordained to the priesthood. The Bishop of the Diocese of Southwest Florida, Rt. Rev. Doug Scharf, will preach and celebrate Holy Eucharist. Absalom Jones (1746-1818) was born enslaved in Delaware. Around the age of 16, he was permitted to attend a night school for Black people operated by the Quakers. Finally, in 1784, he was freed by manumission. Absalom Jones began worshiping at St George’s Methodist Episcopal Church, where he met and befriended Richard Allen. Following a dispute over where black members of the church were allowed to sit, Absalom was asked to provide pastoral leadership for the African Church of Philadelphia, later the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. Absalom Jones was ordained a priest in 1802. Absalom Jones was an earnest preacher. He denounced slavery, and warned the oppressors to “clean their hands of slaves.” Known as “the Black Bishop of the Episcopal Church,” he was an example of persistent faith in God and in the Church as God’s instrument.

A freewill offering will be collected for Voorhees University and Saint Augustine’s University, two Episcopal Historically Black College and Universities. Absalom Jones understood that education is the key to empowerment. We honor Absalom Jones by supporting our HBCUs, which prepare the talented leaders who will continue the work of building a more just and humane society.

JANUARY 28, 2024 - EPIPHANY 4 Racliffe Responses Psalm 24, 29 Murrill: Service in E Halley: Bring us, O Lord God

Our service of Choral Evensong on the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany, will offer the Evening Service in D by George Dyson, an English composer (1883-1964) who lived through two world wars and mentored future musical stars. Dyson served in the Royal Fusiliers in World War I, where he distinguished himself as an expert on grenade warfare and sustained shellshock (an older term for posttraumatic stress disorder). Returning from the war, he launched his musical career and realized that live performance faced serious competition from first-rate recordings and broadcasts. Young performers needed to attain the highest standards if they were to compete. He championed such future musical standouts as the conductor Colin Davis, the classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, and Malcolm Arnold, who went on to write the scores for more than 100 films, including The Bridge on the River Kwai. Dyson’s own compositions included works for orchestra, chamber group, and orchestra and chorus, as well as hymns and songs. His traditional style, popular in its day, underwent a period of neglect before being revived in the late 20th century.
