Women History Month March 2013 National Theme “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” National Women’s History Month’s roots go back to March 8, 1857, when women from New York City factories staged a protestover working conditions. International Women’s Day was first observed in 1909. In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status Of Women in California, began a “Women’s History Week” celebration. This week was chosen to coincide with theInternational Women’s Day, which was first celebrated March 8,1911, in Europe. Three years later, the United States Congress passed a resolution establishing National Women’s History Week, which was expanded to a month in 1987 at the request of the National Women’s History Project. Based in Santa Rosa, California, The National Women’s History Project, successfully petitioned Congress to designate March as National Women’s Month.

THE ST. PHILIP’S COLLEGE WINTO PROGRAM Statement of Purpose: Women in Nontraditional Occupations

Provide a variety of services and activities for students enrolled in programs non-traditional for their gender in an effort to improve our retention and graduation rates; to inform, recruit, and help student’s succeed as they work towards their non-traditional career goals and helping them to overcome the obstacle to entering a career in a historically male-dominated field; provide leadership opportunities; meet and network with employers, including business owners in nontraditional occupations to make a smooth transition from the classroom into the workplace.

Statement of Vision: Women in Nontraditional Occupations

Ensure that every female student enrolled in nontraditional occupations is helped to realize their capability for learning, raise their qualifications and follow pathways tailored to their aptitudes and aspirations. We aim to provide a ticket to successful adult and working life.

St. Philip’s College was founded in 1898 by Bishop James Steptoe Johnston of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church of the West Texas Diocese. Today, St. Philip’s is a multi-campus institution of the Alamo Community Colleges and serves a semester enrollment of nearly 10,000 credit and more than 5,000 continuing education students. St. Philip’s is a Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving Institution and is the only college in the nation that carries this dual designation. As “A Point of Pride in the Community,” St. Philip’s is among the oldest and most diverse community colleges in the United States. Keynote Speaker

SUSAN L. PAMERLEAU is the Sheriff of Bexar County. The Office of Sheriff serves as the chief law enforcement officer for the county and is also responsible for all judicial support including court security and oversees the operations of the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. She was elected to the position on November 6, 2012, becoming the first woman to be elected to the post. As Sheriff, Pamerleau has pledged her commitment to the people of Bexar County, enacting guiding principles to ensure the Sheriff's Office is run professionally and with operational excellence. Her number one priority as Sheriff is public safety, on a strong foundation of stewardship of tax-payer dollars; improvements in jail operations; and family violence prevention initiatives, a topic on which she is a nationally-recognized speaker. Pamerleau's lifetime of service to our nation and community is highlighted with leadership, duty, honor, and excellence. She has achieved the highest levels of success in both the public and private sectors. She began her 32-year career in the United States Air Force when fewer than one-percent of the Armed Forces were women, and rose to the rank of Major General. During her Air Force career she served in the Pentagon developing plans, programs, and budget requirements for personnel programs, and base realignment and closure actions. As part of the international Military Staff for NATO in Brussels, Belgium, she advised the NATO Military Committee and the North Atlantic Council on topics regarding strategic and force planning, nuclear policy, and arms control and disarmament. She served in personnel management positions in Washington, D.C., and Texas and commanded the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama and the Air Force Personnel Center at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. She received numerous major awards and decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. After her retirement from the Air Force, she also served in the highest levels of the corporate world, as Senior Vice President at USAA, a Fortune 150 company, and serves on the board of directors for Government Personnel Mutual Life Insurance Company. Sheriff Pamerleau received her Masters degree in Public Administration (MPA) from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. Phillips University conferred an honorary Doctorate degree on Pamerleau in 1998. She received her Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Wyoming.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS Presenters Nikki Young's entertainment career spans such hit stage shows as "The LoveList," "Romantic Fools," and "Rumors," as well as regular guest appearances on "Great Day SA," "San Antonio Living," "Fox News First," and Jack Riccardi's "Gang of Four." Some of her feature film work includes roles in "VOSOT: Voice Over/Sound on Tape," "Wolf" (which received a standing ovation during its premiere at SXSW in 2012), and the upcoming "Now Hiring." Young garnered critical acclaim for her work in the award-winning short film "Four Minutes Till the End," which enjoyed festival screenings all over Texas and was an official selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Currently, Nikki is the President of PrimaDonna Productions, Inc.; the Executive Producer for the news series "SA Teen Scene"; and the host for a web concert series showcasing young musical artists all across Texas, broadcast from Sam Ash Music Stores. Nikki received her BFA in Theatre from Southwest Texas State University, and currently resides in San Antonio. For more information on Nikki's work, please visit her website, nikkiyoung.biz. Eva Esquivel is the Communications Manager at Workforce Solutions Alamo, the local area workforce board responsible for workforce development public policies and the fiscal administration of workforce funds for the 12-county Alamo region. Eva joined Workforce Solutions Alamo in 2004 when it was Alamo Workforce Development Inc. She has overseen two name changes for the agency and built the agency as a workforce resource for the media, elected bodies, and has represented the agency within multiple economic development organizations. A graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio (BA 1992), Eva holds years of experience in marketing and communications with expertise in public, government, and media relations. She has worked in the public, private and non-profit sectors starting as a consultant for various local and state-wide elections and campaigns, spending four years as the Chief of Staff to City Councilman Roger A. Flores (1995-1999), and four years with the YMCA of San Antonio as a Marketing Director. In the private sector, she managed marketing projects for such companies as Miller Brewing Company, Coca-Cola and Walgreens. As a volunteer, she participates on the Hemisfair Park Communications Committee, the GetFit SATX fitness team, and mentors women for Alpha Home. Eva is a marathon runner, a champion of the arts, loves to cook for friends and family, and takes the opportunity to travel to explore new places as much as possible.
