Our mermaid is inspired by tales of sailors who, after nights of indulging in island spirits, gazed into the moonlit ocean and were convinced they saw mermaids swimming nearby.

Since 2009, Spartina 449 has been a charitable supporter of the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to education, scientific discovery and charity for the purpose of preserving the cultural heritage of Daufuskie Island, South Carolina. The foundation has achieved numerous accomplishments that keep the history and culture of Daufuskie alive.

Named for the lush cordgrass along our South Carolina coast, Spartina 449 flourished into a specialty lifestyle brand of handbags, jewelry and apparel inspired by our sea and shore. Time is measured by the tide. And that mermaid? She’s on every piece we create, ready to bring our island lifestyle into your personal style!

Inspired by Daufuskie Island’s character & natural beauty, company founder and CEO, Kay Stanley, imagined how linen and leather could marry with colorful patterns and timeless island stories. That thought became a beautifully coordinated collection beloved by women everywhere.
