Drill Bits Introduction Now a day almost all industrial applications need drilling machines for various purposes. Not only for Industries, drilling tools are required in construction, excavation, domestic purposes, carpentry works, decorations etc. The types of the drilling machines are different from others in the above applications, though the purpose in all the above case is to drill a hole. As stated before, a drilling machine is a mechanical device used to create a circular and cylindrical hole. The hole can be in walls, concretes, wood, floor or in a metal. Drilling machines come in very small to very giant sizes. Drilling machines used in lighter applications are generally portable ones which can easily be carried from one place to another. Drill bits are the important parts of the drilling equipment. Drill bits are the cutting tools that create cylindrical holes using the machines. Drill bits are attached to the drilling machine. The drill bits come in number of sizes as required by the application. By design they are very simple, one end has the cutting tool and the other end is a plane shaft which is called as shank. Using this shank, the drill bit is fixed to the chuck of the drill. When the chuck rotates, the drill bits also rotate. The chuck of the drill machines is designed in such a way that it can accommodate drill bits of various diameters. Drill bits have many geometrical aspects. The spiral around the drill bit removes the swarf or chips from the hole. Point angle at the tip is the angle formed at the apex of the drill bit. For harder materials, a larger point angle is required. For soft materials a smaller point angle is preferred. The lips of the bit are the spiral cutting edges. The lip angle determines the aggressiveness of the cutting. The length of the drill bit decides the length of the hole that can be drilled. The longer length can drill longer holes. Drill bits come in set of standard lengths. The bit shank is the part of the bit which fits into the chuck of the drilling machine. Drills bits need to be very strong and rigid so as to take up any kind of hardness during drilling. Parameters that are considered while selecting the materials for manufacturing drill bits are material’s hardness, strength, longevity, sharpness, resistance. That is why drill bits are very expensive considering all other parts of a drill machine. Usually drill bits are manufactured using variety of materials like low and high carbon steels, cobalt steel alloy etc and are coated with materials like titanium, tungsten carbide to gain additional hardness. Carbide bits are very harder and stronger. It is important to consider the materials for manufacturing these bits. A metal driller needs to much harder and stronger compared to plastic or wood driller. Few materials may not suit for certain applications where more strength and hardness is required. Also they need to given proper finishing, hardness treatment and heat treatment. There are many manufacturers and traders for drill bits. Steelsparrow.com is an online engineering store selling all verities of drill bits online in India. Having sourced the drill bits from reputed makers like Miranda, they are fast in delivery of the goods.
