ICONOCLAST

CLIMBABLE HABITABLE STRUCTURE JUNIOR STUDIO FALL 2020 | KEITH KASEMAN

The prolonged path of the Beltline is reimagined through frames of multiple dimensions consisting of the vertical, the horizontal, and the diagonal. The bridge and its extension of the geometries is an iconoclast of the bridge’s past; a vision where the connector’s purpose is a portal from one side to another but consisting of ever-changing views and places to linger upon. The shapes favor surfaces nearby such as the ground where they will sink towards the earth, or towards the buildings where the shapes stay upright to match the nature of its surrounding complexes. The shapes contain patterns that stretch out from the top to the bottom that consists of a grid. The grid’s dimension of 5’x5’ allows spaces to be explored and created for rest, for storage, and for other flexible reasons. The outer structure acts as a from that is echoed from the inner layer of the ramp; they consist of the same shapes that have been superimposed and stretched towards nearby structures. The ramp is inhabitable from the top of the ramp and from the lower level as well. The shapes create the form.

The form is relative, but it is not solidified. The form is a phenomenon, it converges and diverges out of numerous connections. The form is our future if we decide to hold control of it.

TRUSS BOUND

MULTIMODAL MARKET AND LEARNING SPACE JUNIOR STUDIO FALL 2020 | KEITH KASEMAN

The space is divided between the in-and-out of the steel vierendeel truss structure which is held up by four mega concrete columns that houses distinct functions. Inside the truss invites shoppers into a open market space that can be explored on the first floor of the truss. The entirety of the structure is accessible with the quarter-mile long path that wraps around the columns starting from the lower level parking lot to the upper rooftop level. MIRABILIS WALKWAY REUSING THE ANCIENT RUIN REUSE THE ROMAN RUINS COMPETITION SUMMER 2020 | RYAN ROARK, ELISSA PALMER

Piscina Mirabilis, a ruined ancient Roman pool in Bacoli is reimagined as a contemporary art museum and central attraction for the region. Visitors circulate on the flooded ground level and on two different mezzanine levels by following a floating and suspended walkway comprised of new lightweight modules that attach to and interact with the modular ancient masonry columns. The highly regular grid of the piscina creates two dominant central axes, one long and one short. The bay of the pool running along the short central axis is deeper than the rest of the pool. Historically, it served as a trench for cleaning; today, the Trench is celebrated with underwater up-lighting. The piscina’s long central axis is well lit thanks to existing skylights which punctuate each bay along this axis; the new museum creates a Sculpture River along this axis, by adding a platform beneath each of the skylights where large-scale sculptures can be displayed.

GOVALLE-OVALLE FORCE MAJEURE

FORCE MAJEURE AIA AUSTIN COMPETITION SUMMER 2020 | RYAN ROARK, ELISSA PALMER, MAYA ASSAD

The Govalle-Ovalle proposes a community center to distribute supplies safely to those affected by the pandemic in East Austin, providing the neighborhood with a sense of continuity and support both in times of crisis and at other times. The area is currently underserved by grocery stores, making this an advantageous site for a food market outside of pandemic times. The Ovalle program is broken up into multiple structures to mitigate crowding, including: a market which doubles as a distribution center; an urban farm attached to a teaching kitchen; and a daycare and playground. The complex has a shaded roundabout with unidirectional foot traffic to minimize the risk of contagion and three entry points, each of which has a sanitation station.

JAZZ DANCE STUDIO CONGLOMORATE SOPHOMORE STUDIO SPRING 2020 | RYAN ROARK

This project proposes a jazz dance studio at the corner of Auburn and Piedmont of downtown Atlanta. The structure is organized around a centralized courtyard which acts as a space of contemplation and pause from the hustleand-bustle of the urban environment. The courtyard also separates the public studio spaces from the more private administrative and support programs, as well as a public cafe. The exterior facades are veiled with perforated redbrick surfaces to give a sense of privacy for the practice spaces, but this is juxtaposed by the open and transparent views of those spaces from inside the courtyard. The studio spaces extrude out on different levels as a play on gravity to imitate the airy-but dramatic -response to the music. Some of the levels of the building are altered between half and full stories to create transitional spaces that mimic the improvisation of jazz’s half steps. The body of the building is rigid and rectangular with the façade showing rhythmic variations with perforations of brickwork mimicking syncopation as jazz dance follows its musical counterwork in a strict manner. The rhythm is further conveyed in the placement of the openings to allow light to playfully shine into the structure during the daytime.

LIMINAL LANDSCAPES THREE PART SERIES SOPHOMORE STUDIO SPRING 2020 | RYAN ROARK

With three given sites each reflecting different atmospheres and conditions, the structures were placed in the landscapes to create a liminal space by utilizing model making and drawing sections. The sites introduced were an urban environment with two large buildings situated between the site, a base of a slope touching a body of water, and a site located at the top of a perch. All three projects introduce a concept of “blurring” the lines between the site and the structure by creating a middle ground of the two transitioning areas. The blurring is done by a repetition of verticals, stacking of horizontals, and blurring the views as one moves through the structure

COMMUNITY LIBRARY LOCUS OF COLLABORATION SOPHOMORE STUDIO FALL 2019 | HAYRI DORTDIVANLIOGLU

Challenging both the structural and the ornamental side of architecture, a series of material experiments derived the form of the community library. The library located in Cambridge, Massachusettes represents a locus of collaboration where both the local residents of West Cambridge and Lower Allston and the Harvard students can share resources.
