APPLIED URBAN SCIENCE AND INFORMATICS

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Our rigorous programs are designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in urban informatics, developing the technical and problem-solving skills to use data for social good. You will be immersed in every aspect of this exciting, multidisciplinary field, both in the classroom and through hands-on learning opportunities in research, internships, and interactions with our world-class faculty and NYU CUSP industry partners.

MS IN APPLIED URBAN SCIENCE AND INFORMATICS

Our master’s program offers a unique, cutting-edge approach that links data science, statistics, analytics, and mathematics with complex urban systems, urban management, and policy. You’ll develop a deep understanding of how to work with data at all stages of its life cycle, from acquisition to visualization, and how to apply it to the inner workings of cities.

¢ The MS degree is a 36-credit program that may be completed full time or part time.

¢ Tailor the curriculum to your goals by building upon core courses with electives, applied project intensives, internships, and global immersion offerings.

¢ The six-credit, two-semester capstone program pairs students with companies, non-profits, and city agencies to enable the pursuit of professional research and practical application of skills in real-world projects.

ONLINE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN APPLIED URBAN SCIENCE AND INFORMATICS

Our Online Advanced Certificate is a 12-credit program that can be completed from anywhere and built around your busy schedule. Through asynchronous modules, videos, and materials along with synchronous support sessions, you will examine complex urban issues and uncover practical solutions—spanning data collection and analysis to improved decision-making in city governments— for challenges facing growing cities worldwide.

The Online Advanced Certificate is designed for working professionals who wish to complement previous studies or professional experience with applied work in urban informatics.

DOCTORAL TRACK IN URBAN SCIENCE: COMPLEXITY, INFORMATICS, AND SENSING

Our new nine-credit doctoral track offers a collaborative and inclusive environment for students who are enrolled in a variety of PhD programs at NYU Tandon with an interest in convergent research in urban science. The track allows doctoral students to engage with researchers across academic disciplines and methodological interests, who are united by their interest in urban science and its applications.

INNOVATE SOLUTIONS TO COMPLEX URBAN CHALLENGES

At NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), you will engage in interdisciplinary research dedicated to the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to serve urban communities across the globe. Innovate data– and technology-driven solutions to improve city services, create smart infrastructures, and tackle issues such as crime and environmental pollution.

You will join the ranks of innovators who are engineering smart, connected, sustainable, and healthy global communities. Build upon a rich history and chart a path to a better future for the entire planet.

INFORMATICS

RESEARCH AND RESOURCES

Since its founding in 2012, CUSP’s research has remained both mission and impact oriented. We develop and integrate data analytics and technologies both to meet specific needs, like improving building energy usage, and for the common good, such as controlling noise pollution, analyzing the impact of COVID-19, and addressing the effects of flooding. Our interdisciplinary research teams foster collaboration between experts in the physical and natural sciences, computer and data science, the social sciences, engineering, and professional fields such as policy, design, and finance.

TOP RESEARCH AREAS

NEW YORK CITY IS YOUR LABORATORY

As part of America’s largest private research university, the NYU Tandon School of Engineering offers nearly unlimited possibilities for collaboration, professional growth, and entrepreneurship.

NYU Tandon combines outstanding graduate and certificate programs in applied urban science and informatics with the excitement of New York City. At a time when the world needs to continuously rethink many of its “normal” ways of living, there has never been a better time—or place—to pursue training that allows you to use data to inform decisions that will impact communities around the globe.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT ANALAURA

TOSTADO Applied Urban Science and Informatics, MS, Fulbright Scholar

Analaura came to CUSP from Mexico with a background in architecture and a vision of infusing her ability to shape cities with data science. Leveraging skills in machine learning to understand how collection bin location affects participation in recycling programs, Analaura developed an award-winning proposal to improve the way organic waste is collected in NYC. Through her courses and other hands-on projects like this, she is learning to analyze massive data sets and extract information to help city leaders make better-informed decisions about sustainability.

CAREERS

CUSP graduates are well prepared to lead organizations in making more informed decisions by unlocking the potential of their data. Our alumni are sought after by key city and government agencies, leading firms in technology, telecommunications, utilities and renewable energy, management consulting, financial services, and a variety of other sectors including startups and nonprofits. They hold positions ranging from data scientist, to data and policy analyst, and even management and leadership roles. With a job placement rate of 93.5 percent and an average starting salary of $97,000*, you can feel confident in your career trajectory in the growing field of urban informatics.
