TerraCycle has developed recycling processes for everything from cigarette butts, chewing gum and diapers to candy wrappers, chip bags and drink pouches.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that Americans create more than 251 million tons of trash each year. Of this, 164 million tons end up in landfills and incinerators, damaging the land, air quality and water supply. As waste generation continues to escalate, many novel alternatives to landfilling have risen in popularity, including recycling, reuse and upcycling, or the conversion of waste material into new, desirable products.
