Aufschwung Liebe Freunde des Hauses NIEHOFF, seit langem gehören die Länder Ostund Südostasiens zu den für uns extrem wichtigen Wirtschaftsräumen, deren Draht- und Kabelhersteller wir direkt mit eigenen Niederlassungen in Schanghai, Singapur und Tokio betreuen. Etliche Anzeichen deuten darauf hin, dass China und die ASEAN-Staaten die ersten Länder sind, die sich von der weltweiten Wirtschaftskrise erholen und dabei einen nachhaltigen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung erleben. Angeführt von China investieren diese Länder erhebliche Summen in den Ausbau ihrer Infrastruktur und ihrer Binnenwirtschaft und streben eine führende Stellung in unterschiedlichen Wachstumstechnologien an. Einige Gedanken hierzu können Sie dem Beitrag auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite entnehmen. Diese Maßnahmen haben weitreichende Auswirkungen. Es ist zu erwarten, dass sich das Gewicht in der Weltwirtschaft vermehrt nach Asien verlagern wird. Außerdem sind große Mengen an Energie nötig, um die Vorhaben umzusetzen und mit den Begleit- und Folgeerscheinungen umzugehen. Von dieser Entwicklung profitieren Draht- und Kabelhersteller genauso wie von den Bemühungen vielerorts, neben Wasser- und Atomkraftwerken verstärkt Solar- und Windenergie zu nutzen, da die Ressourcen an fossilen Energieträgern knapper werden. In unserem Interview äußert sich Herr Luo Wei Dong, Geschäftsführer der Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co.,

Die Energienachfrage steigt Umfangreiche Infrastrukturpogramme in Ost- und Südostasien Ungeachtet der weltweiten Wirtschaftskrise werden in Ost- und Südostasien große Projekte verwirklicht, bei denen Energie und somit auch Draht und Kabel eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Wie die Fachzeitschrift „Wire“ in ihrer Ausgabe 3/2009 berichtet, dürfte in China bis zum Jahr 2011 die Nachfrage nach diesen Produkten jährlich um m mehr als 13 % wachsen. Um die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des Lanndes zu fördern, investiert die chinesische Regierung erhebliche Beeträge in die Stromversorgung und das Telekommunikationsnetz. Zu den großen Projekten gehört der Ausbau der an Erdöl, Erdgas und Kohle reichen Provinz Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region im Nord-westen des Landes zum Energieversorger Chinas und zum Handelssumschlagplatz mit Zentralasien. Die Außenhandels-Informationssagentur „Germany Trade and Invest“ (gtai) meldet beispielsweise, dass dort 15 große Eisenbahnprojekte im Bau oder in Planung sind, um den Warenaustausch zu vereinfachen, und etliche Flughäfen modernisiert werden. Im Osten des Landes, in der Metropole Schanghai, wird mit gewaltigem Aufwand die Weltausstellung Expo 2010 vorbereitet, auf der China seinen Anspruch als „Global Player” in der Elektro- und Antriebstechnik, in energieeffizienter Gebäudetechnik und im zukunftsweisenden Umgang mit Solarenergie unterstreichen will. Eine herausragende Stellung strebt auch die Tianjin Binhai New Area nahe der nordchinesischen Hafenstadt Tianjin mit ihren mehr als 11 Mio. Einwohnern an. Dort sollen bis zum Jahr 2011 mehr als 40 Mrd. US $ in die Verkehrsinfrastruktur, die Energie- und Wasserversorgung und in den Umweltschutz investiert werden. Die Stadt gilt übrigens als Zentrum der chinesischen Windenergietechnik. Aber auch in den ASEAN-Staaten sind große Projekte im Gang. So bereitet die thailändische Regierung ein 40 Mrd. US $ schweres Konjunk-
turprogramm vor, das im zweiten 2. Halbjahr 2009 verabschiedet werden soll. Ein Viertel der Summe ist für Infrastrukturmaßnahmen wie den Ausbau und die Modernisierung schienengebundener Transportsysteme vorgesehen. Die vietnamesische Regierung y g g g will bis zum Jahresende etwa 9 Mrd. US $ vor allem in die Bereiche Verkehr, Transport,

Wasserwirtschaft, Umweltschutz und Wohnungsbau investieren. Auch Indonesien, größtes Land und größte Volkswirtschaft der ASEANStaaten, macht durch spektakuläre Projekte auf sich aufmerksam. Fachleute erwarten, dass der Elektrizitätsbedarf des Landes in den nächsten zehn Jahren durchschnittlich um jährlich 9 % zunehmen wird. Zusätzlich zu einem bereits laufenden Vorhaben startete die indonesische Regierung ein Programm zum Aufbau weiterer Kraftwerkskapazitäten mit einer Gesamtleistung von 10.000 MW, das bis zum Jahr 2015 verwirklicht sein soll. Von den dafür vorgesehenen 17,3 Mrd. US $ sollen, wie gtai unter Berufung auf die „Indonesian Electric Cable Manufacturers Association“ meldet, mindestens 2,3 Mrd. US $ für die Errichtung von Leitungen zum Übertragen und Verteilen der Energie verwendet werden. Die in Ost- und Südostasien wachsende Nachfrage nach Energie stellt die Draht- und Kabelindustrie vor große Herausforderungen, zu deren Bewältigung NIEHOFF beitragen kann.

Power & Trends: Herr Luo Wei Dong, es ist sehr freundlich, dass Sie uns die Gelegenheit zu einem Interview mit Ihnen geben. Wie wir wissen, ist die Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co., Ltd. einer der größten Zulieferer von Kupferwalzdraht auf dem chinesischen Festland. Würden Sie bitte unseren Lesern das Produktionsprogramm von Jiangsu Jiangrun and die wichtigsten Anwendungsgebiete der Produkte erklären? Luo Wei Dong: Wir haben hauptsächlich mit der Herstellung von fünf Produktreihen zu tun, nämlich Kupferwalzdraht, blankem Kupferdraht, verzinntem Kupferdraht, versilbertem Kupferdraht und Litzen aus Kupferdraht. Diese Produkte werden in der Automobilindustrie, der Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik, dem Schienenverkehr und der Kernenergiewirtschaft eingesetzt. Eingang der neuen Fabrik in Yixing

Power & Trends: Können Sie uns etwas über die Geschichte von Jiangsu Jiangrun und die derzeitige Situation des Unternehmens erzählen? Luo Wei Dong: Jiangsu Jiangrun (JRC) wurde im Jahr 1978 gegründet und gehört zur Jiangsu Jinhui Gruppe. Im Laufe der Zeit wurde Jiangsu Jiangrun eines der größten Unternehmen in der Forschung, Entwicklung und Fertigung von Kupferleitern in China. In den drei aufeinanderfolgenden Jahren 2006, 2007 und 2008 wurde unser Unternehmen in die Gruppe der „Top 500 Enterprises“ in China gewählt. Power & Trends: Sie erwähnten den Namen Jiangsu Jinhui Group… Luo Wei Dong: Die Jiangsu Jinhui Group, die in der Töpferstadt Yixing beheimatet ist, wurde im Jahr 1994 gegründet und umfasst heute vier Tochtergesellschaften: Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper, Yixing Yida Copper,

Gibt es zusätzlich zu den von Ihnen erwähnten Maßnahmen weitere Gründe für diese rasche Entwicklung? Luo Wei Dong: Die rasche Entwicklung unseres Unternehmens wurde von einigen wichtigen Faktoren begünstigt. Wir hatten sehr gute Marktmöglichkeiten als China zum weltweiten Produktionszentrum wurde. Seit 2001 wuchs die Nachfrage des Marktes sehr schnell. Der weitere Ausbau des landesweiten Stromversorgungsnetzes, die Integration der städtischländlichen Infrastruktur und der Export von mechanischen

Power & Trends: Bestimmt analysieren führende Unternehmen dieser Industrie wie Jiangsu Jiangrun den Markt und seine Möglichkeiten… Luo Wei Dong: Natürlich tun wir das. Die Anteilseigner und die Geschäftsführung von JRC haben seit je her einen guten Einblick in das Marktgeschehen und nutzten ihr Wissen, um große und kontinuierliche Investitionsprogramme umzusetzen. In 30 Jahren haben wir immer die besten Produktionsmaschinen in unserem Unternehmen eingesetzt. Power & Trends: Können Sie uns dazu einige Einzelheiten nennen? Luo Wei Dong: Wir haben von Southwire aus den USA, NIEHOFF aus Deutschland und Outokumpu aus Finnland fast 100 Maschinen und Anlagen der weltweiten Spitzenklasse für die Kupferdrahtfertigung eingeführt, darunter kontinuierlich arbeitende Gießwalzanlagen, Drahtziehanlagen, galvanische Beschichtungsanlagen, Verlitzmaschinen und so weiter. Wir besitzen eine SCR-7000-Anlage von Southwire mit einer Jahreskapazität von 350.000 Tonnen und haben acht importierte Walzdrahtziehanlagen, darunter NIEHOFF-Walzdraht-

ziehmaschinen der Typen M 81, M 85 und MM 85, 13 NIEHOFF-Mehrdrahtziehanlagen und 80 NIEHOFF-Verlitzmaschinen. Jetzt können wir eine jährliche Produktionskapazität von 50.000 Tonnen für Litzen mit 0,09 bis 16 mm² Querschnitt aus Kupfer- oder verzinntem Kupferdraht erreichen. Mit dieser fortschrittlichen Ausstattung verfeinern wir ständig den Aufbau unsere Produkte und verbessern Leistung und Qualität. Besonders für den Bereich neue Energien wie die Kernund die Windenergie-Industrie haben wir geeignete Neuheiten entwickelt. Power & Trends: War es für die Geschäftsführung immer leicht, die Anteilseigner des Unternehmens von Investitionsvorhaben zu überzeugen? Luo Wei Dong: Die rasche Entwicklung unseres Unternehmens beruht auch auf der Tatsache, dass die Anteilseigner uns immer gut unterstützt haben und dass sie alle die langfristige Strategie des Unternehmens im Auge haben. Power & Trends: Was diese Langzeitstrategie betrifft, so wissen wir, dass Jiangsu Jiangrun eine neue Fabrik in Yixing errichtet. Dürfen wir darüber einige Einzelheiten erfahren? Luo Wei Dong: Die neuen Fertigungseinrichtungen für Jiangsu Jiangrun sind fast fertig. Das Grundstück der neuen Fabrik hat eine Fläche von mehr als 712.435 m² und die Fläche des Fabrikgebäudes beträgt 45.000 m². Die SCR-Anlage wurde bereits installiert und nahm
2008 die Produktion auf. Die neuen NIEHOFF-Maschinen, darunter MM 85-Walzdrahtzieh-, Verzinnungs- und Mehrdrahtziehanlagen sowie Verlitzmaschinen, werden ebenfalls in der neuen Fabrik aufgestellt. Power & Trends: Eine qualitativ hochwertige Ausstattung sowie hoch motiviertes und gut ausgebildetes Personal sind eine Voraussetzung, um gerade in einer Zeit sehr herausfordernder Marktbedingungen erfolgreich zu sein. Was tut JRC noch, um Qualitätsstandards zu sichern, die dem internationalen Niveau entsprechen? Luo Wei Dong: Als einer der Drahthersteller beteiligten wir uns im Jahr 2008 an der Überarbeitung nationaler Normen für „Kupferrunddraht für elektrische Zwecke“ (“Round copper wire for electrical purposes“), „Verzinnten Kupferrunddraht“ (“Tinned round copper wire“) und „Flexible Kupferlitzenleiter für elektrische Verwendung“ (“Flexible copper stranded conductors for electrical purposes“). Im selben Jahr wurden wir von der Derivaten-Börse Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) als Pilotfabrik für das Kupferkathodenregister anerkannt. Wir sind überzeugt, dass unsere Kunden unsere Anstrengungen zu schätzen wissen und dass ein Kupferdrahthersteller nur auf diese Weise von anspruchsvollen Kunden akzeptiert wird, wie den international bekannten Unternehmen Nexans, Prysmian, Essex, Delphi, Sumitomo, Hitachi, LS and Tyco etc. Alle diese Unternehmen gehören übrigens zu unserem Kundenkreis.

Maximaler Kundennutzen Die neue Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschine D 1001
Erst vor kurzem hat NIEHOFF die neue Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschine Typ D 1001 auf dem Markt eingeführt. Auf diesem Modell werden Litzen bis 50 mm² mit einer Schlaglänge von bis zu 300 mm und einer maximalen Schlagzahl von 3200 S/min produziert. Für die Fertigung von Alu-Litzen mit einem maximalen Querschnitt von 60 mm² gibt es zusätzlich eine spezielle Version dieses Maschinentyps. Die D 1001 eignet sich hervorragend für große Schenkellitzen und Batterieleitungen aus Kupfer und Aluminium und kann in Rechts- oder Linksausführung bestellt werden. Schwere Spulen mit 1000 mm Flanschdurchmesser und bis zu 750 mm Breite sind einsetzbar und können aufgrund der zweiseitigen Pinolen an der Spannvorrichtung mit geringem Kraftaufwand sehr leicht ausgewechselt werden.
NIEHOFF-Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschinen im Vergleich zu konventionellen Verlitzmaschinen deutlich reduziert und die Geräuschemission erheblich verringert. Schleifringe werden nur zur Stromübertragung verwendet, Prozessdaten werden aus dem Spulenträger telemetrisch übertragen. Die eingestellte Wickelspannung wird mittels einer Kraftmessdose im Spulenträger über die gesamte Spulenfüllung in engen Grenzen geregelt. Die motorisch angetriebene Abziehscheibe ermöglicht eine stufenlose Einstellung der Schlaglänge und damit ein Maximum an Produktionsflexibilität. Alle Produktionsparameter werden am „Touchscreen“-Monitor eingestellt und zusammen mit sämtlichen Wartungshinweisen deutlich angezeigt. Der Wartungsaufwand für die Verlitzmaschinen ist durch

Für sämtliche Verlitzmaschinen-Modelle gibt es optional die automatische Verlegung NBAT (‚NIEHOFF Bunching Automatic Traverse’). Hier werden die Spulenflansche automatisch erkannt, und die Verlegebreite von leeren und vollen Spulen wird mit optoelektronischen Sensoren optimal geregelt – ohne Eingreifen des Maschinenbedieners. Die Litzen können auch bei hohen Geschwindigkeiten schlingenfrei und ohne Drahtbeschädigung abgezogen werden, da die Spulen perfekt gefüllt werden.

D Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschine D 801 Die NIEHOFF-Doppelschlag-Verlitzmaschinen sind vorbildlich im Bereich N Energieund Materialeinsparung. Stufenlos einstellbare Schlaglängen E von v 15 bis 160 mm, konstant einstellbare Wickelspannung und engste Fertigungstoleranzen ergeben einen extrem kurzen „Return on InF vestment“. Die D 801 gehört zu einer Maschinenfamilie, die aus sechs v unter schiedlichen Modellgrößen besteht und den Querschnittsbereich u von v 0,013 mm² bis 50 mm² abdeckt (Seite 8).

Ohne Kabel – kein Strom Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. (BCC), Bangkok, Thailand
In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurde Thailand wegen seines außergewöhnlichen Wirtschaftswachstums international sehr bekannt. Beteiligt an diesem Erfolg ist auch die Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. (BCC), einer der führenden Draht- und Kabelhersteller Thailands. Die eigentliche Geschäftsidee von BCC war der Gedanke, dass Draht und Kabel die wesentlichen Mittel zur Stromübertragung im Land sind. In einer Unternehmensschrift wird diese Idee kurz und prägnant ausgedrückt: “No Cable – No Power“, also „ohne Kabel – kein Strom“. Heute hat BCC 720 Beschäftigte, die in zwei Fabriken in Thailand sowie in einem Werk in Bangladesch tätig sind. Kontinuierliche Entwicklung BCC wurde im August 1964 gegründet. Seitdem wird ein kontinuierliches Entwicklungsprogramm realisiert. Dessen Ziel ist es, permanent Fertigungseinrichtungen und -verfahren einzusetzen, die dem jeweiligen Stand der Technik entsprechen. Parallel dazu hat BCC Kooperationen mit namhaften Draht- und Kabelherstellern wie Tatsuta und Hitachi aus Japan begründet. Außerdem wurden die Produktionsflächen und das Produktionsprogramm der beiden BCC-Fabriken in Bangpakong-Chachoengsao in der Provinz Chachoengsao und in Samutprakam in der Provinz Samut Prakam erweitert. Darüber hinaus wurden im Rahmen von Gemeinschaftsunternehmen verschiedene Projekte ver-
wirklicht wie die Hitachi Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. Im Jahr 2007 erfolgte die Gründung der Bangkok Cable (Bangladesh) Limited, die auf die Fertigung von Elektrodrähten und -kabeln aus Kupfer und Aluminium spezialisiert ist und die wachsende Nachfrage in Bangladesch befriedigen soll.
Produkte und Märkte In der Anfangszeit produzierte und vermarktete BCC vor allem Elektrodrähte und Elektrokabel für die Gebäude-Installation und konzentrierte sich auf die Anforderungen von Kunden aus der Provinz. Später expandierte das Unternehmen und bediente, innerhalb des hauptsächlich auf das Inland ausgerichteten Geschäfts, auch Kunden aus der Wirtschaft und aus staatlichen Einrichtungen. Dann begann das Unternehmen, seine Produkte auch in Australien, auf den Philippinen, in Bangladesch und in Indien zu vermarkten. Mit einer modernen Produktionseinrichtung und einem System zur Qualitätskontrolle, das internationalen Normen entspricht, produziert BCC heute eine breite Palette an Elektrodrähten und -kabeln aus Kupfer und Aluminium mit oder ohne PVC-, PE- oder XLPE-Isolierung. Außer blanken Leitern umfasst das Produktionsprogramm Drähte und Kabel für die Gebäude-Installation, Nieder-, Mittel- und Hochspannungskabel, Steuerkabel sowie flexible Leitungen. Die jährliche Produktionskapazität für Kupferleiter beträgt ungefähr 100.000 Tonnen, für Aluminiumleiter etwa 25.000 Tonnen. Qualitätspolitik In seinem Bestreben, das Fachwissen der Beschäftigen auszubauen und die Qualität der Produkte und Dienstleistungen zu optimieren, begann BCC Mitte der 1990er Jahre, ein Qualitätsmanagementsystem (QMS) einzuführen. Dieses deckt alle Phasen des Produktionsprozesses ab und hat BCC bis jetzt mehrere international anerkannte Zertifizierungen eingebracht. Der Schlüssel zum Erfolg BCC will die Nummer eins unter Thailands Herstellern von qualitativ hochwertigen Drähten und Kabeln sein. Die wesentlichen Kriterien lassen sich in einer anderen Lesart des Firmenkürzels BCC zusammenfassen: B – Beste Qualität, C – Competitive price (konkurrenzfähiger Preis) und C – Customer care (Kundenbetreuung). In einer auf der BCC-Website veröffentlichten Mitteilung erklärt Sompong Nakornsri, Präsident und Geschäftsführer des Unternehmens: „Um internationale Anerkennung zu bekommen, muss Thailand seine wirtschaftliche Expansion noch weiter ausbauen. Die Initiative, große Vorhaben zu verwirklichen, fördert das Wirtschaftswachstum, das zu immer mehr industriellen Projekten führt. Dadurch werden immer größere Mengen an Draht und Kabeln zur Stromübertragung gebraucht. Diese Gelegenheiten wird Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. nutzen und dabei sowohl auf die Entwicklungen im Zeitalter der Globalisierung reagieren, als diese Entwicklungen auch durch den Einsatz von moderner Technologie

Umzug in die neue Fabrik Wie in „Power & Trends“ bereits berichtet, errichtet die Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF am Stammsitz in Schwabach derzeit eine komplett neue Fabrik, die dem erweiterten Produktionsprogramm und dem gewachsenen Auftragsvolumen entsprechend konzipiert wurde. Trotz witterungsbedingter Beeinträchtigungen zu Beginn des Jahres liegen die Baumaßnahmen im Zeitplan, so
Thomas Konrad geht zu NHM NIEHOFF-Mitarbeiter Thomas Konrad (48) wechselt zum 1. Oktober vom Stammhaus in Schwabach zu NIEHOFF-Herborn Máquinas (NHM), der brasilianischen NIEHOFF-Tochtergesellschaft in Sao Paulo. Er wird dort den Vertrieb der von NHM gebauten Maschinen in Brasilien und in den Nachbarländern und außerdem den Vertrieb von NIEHOFF-Maschinen aus Thomas Konrad Deutschland in Südamerika leiten. Thomas Konrad, der fließend portugiesisch spricht, wuchs in Brasilien auf, besuchte dort eine deutsche Schule, absolvierte sein Maschinenbau-Studium in São Paulo und wurde 1983 Mitarbeiter bei NHM. Dort war er in der Folgezeit für die Anpassung von
dass sich jetzt, nach rund einjähriger Bauzeit, verschiedene Abteilungen auf den Umzug in den Neubau vorbereiten. Die Montage, die Lackiererei mit modernster Lackiertechnik und der Prüfstand werden das neue Gebäude als Erste beziehen. Die Mitarbeiter am Prüfstand führen die internen Endprüfungen der Ziehanlagen, Verlitzmaschinen, Flechtmaschinen, Verseilmaschinen und Spuler durch. Die beiden Lehrwerkstätten, in denen die künftigen NIEHOFF-Mitarbeiter für alle Bereiche der Technik ausgebildet werden, werden ebenfalls in das neue Gebäude verlegt. Der Startschuss für den Umzug fällt am 5. Oktober 2009, geplant ist eine Dauer von insgesamt vier bis sechs Wochen. Die neue Fabrik bietet größere Flächen und besser ausgestattete Arbeitsplätze, Arbeitsabläufe werden effizienter organisiert und der Aufwand für die Materialbereitstellung, das Handling und die Auftragsabwicklung wird reduziert. Der Neubau ist für NIEHOFF eine wichtige Investition, um seine Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auch in Zukunft zu sichern und weiter zu steigern.
NIEHOFF-Komponenten an nationale Bestimmungen, Maßnahmen zur Qualitätssicherung und die Abnahme von Maschinen zuständig. Acht Jahre später wurde er nach Schwabach ins NIEHOFF-Stammhaus versetzt, wo er das Verkaufs-Team verstärkte und NIEHOFFKunden in Portugal, Spanien, Israel und auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent betreute. Die weitere Betreuung der Märkte Portugal, Spanien und Israel wurde Thomas Bauer (41) anvertraut, der seit 1989 zum NIEHOFF-Team gehört. Der ausgebildete Elektrotechniker war lange Zeit am PrüfThomas Bauer stand tätig und führte Inbetriebnahmen von NIEHOFF-Maschinen und -Anlagen durch. Im Rahmen seiner Aufgaben im Innen- und Außendienst koordinierte er unter anderem die Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Stammhaus und dem für Südostasien zuständigen NIEHOFF Singapore Representative Office.

Recovery Dear Friends of NIEHOFF, For many years, countries in East and Southeast Asia have represented some of the extremely important markets for NIEHOFF. We supply directly to wire and cable manufacturers in the region from our own subsidiaries in Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo. Numerous indicators suggest that China, and the ASEAN countries, are the first markets to show signs of recovery from the global economic crisis, and that they will be enjoying a sustained boom in the process. Spearheaded by China, these nations are investing considerable amounts in developing and expanding their infrastructures and domestic economies, and there is clear evidence of a move to push into a leading position in various growth technologies. A range of ideas on the subject can be found in the article on the opposite page. These measures will have far-reaching consequences. For example, it is to be expected that the heavyweights in the global economy will increasingly shift their focus towards Asia. In addition, huge amounts of energy will be needed to realize the planned projects and manage the side effects, and after effects, of these changes. Wire and cable manufacturers will profit from this development – and from the widespread efforts to tackle the problem of increasingly scarce fossil energy carriers by turning more and more to renewable forms of energy like solar and wind energy, hydroelectric power plants, and nuclear power stations. On the following pages we have articles about two companies from the wire and cable industry in East and Southeast Asia. Our inter-
view with Mr. Luo Wei Dong, General Manager of Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co, Ltd., China, talks about the strategic implications and the resulting commercial challenges of trying to become the market leader (pages 17 onward), while our company portrait introduces Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. (BCC) from Thailand (pages 23 onward). Both companies are key, long-standing business partners of NIEHOFF. The cooperation with such innovative companies has resulted, among other things, in products like the “D” series of double twist bunching machines, which now comprises six different sizes. Rising Demand for Energy Comprehensive Programs to Boost Infrastructure in East and Southeast Asia Despite the global economic crisis, large projects are currently underway in East and Southeast Asia in which energy – and hence wire and cables – plays an important role. According to the March 2009 edition of the trade journal, “Wire”, demand for wire and cables is expected to grow by more than 13% per year up to the year 2011. In order to stimulate economic development, the Chinese government is investing significant amounts in electrical power supply and telecom-munication networks. Among the larger projects is a program to boostt the role of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest of the e country, a region rich in oil, natural gas, and coal, and to develop it into the main energy supplier for China and a center of trade with Central Asia. The foreign trade information agency Germany Trade and Invest (gtai) reports that fifteen large-scale projects to simplifyy the movement of railway goods are either in the planning stages, orr already under construction. In Shanghai, the metropolis in the east of the country, huge efforts are underway to prepare for World Expo 2010 – an event at which China hopes to underline its claim as a global player in electronic drive technology, energy-efficient building technology, and groundbreaking solutions in solar energy technology. With more than 11 million inhabitants, the Tianjin Binhai New Area, near the northern Chinese port of Tianjin, also plays a prominent role. Here, more than US $ 40 billion is set to be invested in traffic infrastructure, energy and water supplies, and environmental measures by 2011. Interestingly, this city is also seen as the center of the Chinese wind energy industry. However, large projects are also underway in other countries in the ASEAN region. For example, the government of Thailand is preparing an economic stimulus package worth US $ 40 billion, which is due
to be ratified in the second half of 2009. A quarter of this amount is earmarked for infrastructure measures, including the expansion and modernization of rail-based transport systems. By the end of the year, the Vietnamese government is planning to invest around US $ 9 billion, particularly in the areas of traffic, transport, water management, environmental measures, and housing construction. Indonesia, the largest of the ASEAN countries, both in terms of geographic

size, and in terms of its national economy, is also drawing attention to itself with a number of spectacular projects. Experts believe that electricity demand in the country will increase by an average of 9% per year for the next decade. On top of a project which is already running, the Indonesian government has set up a program to build new power stations, offering a total additional capacity of 10,000 MW, which is due to be completed by 2015. Drawing on sources in the Indonesian Electric Cable Manufacturers Association, gtai reports that of the US $ 17.3 billion set aside for this program, at least US $ 2.3 billion will be spent on setting up power transmission and distribution lines. The growing demand for energy in East and Southeast Asia represents a huge challenge for the wire and cable industry – and one that NIEHOFF can help to meet.

Mr. Luo Wei Dong, General Manager of the copper wire manufacturer Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co., Ltd., was talking to Mr. Konrad Dengler from the Power & Trends editing office about strategical aspects which help a copper conductor manufacturer become a market leader and face economic challenges.
Power & Trends: Mr. Luo Wei Dong, it’s very nice to have the opportunity to make an interview with you. As we know, Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co., Ltd. is one of the biggest copper rod suppliers in mainland China. Would you please explain to our readers the production range of Jiangsu Jiangrun and the main applications of the products? Luo Wei Dong: We are mainly engaged in the production of five series of products: Copper rod, bare copper wire, tinned copper wire, silverplated copper wire and bare bunched wire. These products are widely applied in fields like automobile industry, aerospace, railway and nuclear power industry. Power & Trends: Can you tell us something about the history of Jiangsu Jiangrun and the current situation of the company? Entrance of the new workshop in Yixing
The Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper Co., Ltd. manufactures and trades oxygenless copper rod, standard soft copper wire, tin-plated copper wire, twisted copper wire, silver plated copper wire strands, electrical equipment and power cables.
Luo Wei Dong: Jiangsu Jiangrun (JRC) was founded in the year 1978 and is affiliated to Jiangsu Jinhui Group. As time went on, Jiangsu Jiangrun became one of the largest copper conductor R&D and manufacturing enterprises in China. In the three consecutive years of 2006, 2007 and 2008 our company was elected as a member of the “Top 500 Enterprises” in China. Power & Trends: You mentioned the name Jiangsu Jinhui Group… Luo Wei Dong: The Jiangsu Jinhui Group, which is located in the pottery town Yixing, was founded in the year 1994 and includes today four subsidiary companies: Jiangsu Jiangrun Copper, Yixing Yida Copper, Anhui Jinrun Copper and Dayu Huarun Copper. with over 650 employees and a fixed capital of about RMB 1.5 billion, about US $ 220 million. Power & Trends: To become a member of the “Top 500 Enterprises“ in China a company has to meet high demands to develop outstanding qualities. Luo Wei Dong: We have continuously enhanced the core competitiveness, have attached great importance to scientific and technological innovations and we have never stopped optimizing our products. Also, we have increased our investment in training to improve the quality skills of employees and adopted modern management philosophy to stimulate the development of a corporate spirit. Since the beginnings of JRC we comply with the strategic goal of being “the largest and the best”, this means, the largest bare copper wire supplier and the best composite copper conductor supplier in China who provides all-round and professional products and services for the medium and high level wires and cable industry. Power & Trends: In 30 years, JRC has become indeed one of the leading companies for copper conductor production. Are there, in addition to the measures, which you have mentioned already, further reasons for such a fast development? Luo Wei Dong: The fast development of our company benefits from several major aspects. We had very good market

opportunities when China became the world’s manufacturing center. Since 2001 the market demand has increased very fast. The further construction of the National Power Grid, the integration of urban-rural infrastructure and the export of mechanical and electrical goods have increased the market demands resulting in a strong development of the wire and cable industry. Luo Wei Dong: Of course we do. The shareholders and the management of JRC have had always good market insights and have used their knowledge to realize huge and continuous investment programmes. In 30 years, we have continuously installed the best production machines in our company. Power & Trends: Can you tell us some details? Luo Wei Dong: We have nearly 100 sets of world top copper wire production equipments of continuous casting and rolling, wire drawing, electroplating, bunching etc. introduced from Southwire of USA, NIEHOFF of Germany and Outokumpu of Finland. We have an SCR-7000 Southwire line with the annual capacity of 350,000 tons. We have eight imported rod breakdown lines, including NIEHOFF M 81, M 85 and MM 85 rod breadown lines, 13 NIEHOFF multiwire lines and 80 NIEHOFF bunching machines. Now we can reach the annual production capacity of 50,000 tons for 0.09–16 mm2 copper or tin plated copper strands. With these advanced equipments, we always adjust our products construction, improve the performance and quality. Especially for the new energy such as nuclear power and wind power industry, we have developed matching new products. Power & Trends: Has it always been easy for the management to convice the company shareholders of investment projects?

Luo Wei Dong: The fast development of our company results also from the fact that the shareholders have always supported us well and that they all focus on the long term strategy of our company. Power & Trends: Regarding this long term strategy, we know that Jiangsu Jiangrun has a new workshop in Yixing. May we know some details of it? Luo Wei Dong: The new workshops for Jiangsu Jiangrun are nearly finished. The land area of the new plant is more than 712,435 m2 and the area of the workshops building is 45,000 m2. The SCR line was already installed and started production in 2008. The new NIEHOFF machines which include MM 85 rod breakdown, tin plating, and multiwire drawing lines as well as bunching machines will also be set up in the new plant. Power & Trends: High quality equipment and a highly motivated and well skilled staff are a prerequisite for success in a time where the market conditions are very challenging. What else does JRC do to ensure quality standards which comply with the international level? Luo Wei Dong: As one of the drawing companies in 2008 we participated in the revision of national standards regarding “Round copper wire for electrical purposes”, “Tinned round copper wire” and “Flexible copper stranded conductors for electrical purposes”. In the same year we were recognized as a pilot plant for the register of copper cathode by the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE). We are convinced that our

customers appreciate our efforts and that only in this way a copper wire manufacturer is accepted by demanding customers such as the internationally known companies Nexans, Prysmian, Essex, Delphi, Sumitomo, Hitachi, LS and Tyco etc. All these companies, by the way, are our customers. Maximum Customer’s Benefit The new D 1001 double twist buncher
NIEHOFF has just recently introduced the latest addition to its D-series family of bunchers: The D 1001. This new buncher is designed in two versions: A copper buncher capable of processing stranded cable up to a maximum cross section of 50 mm² (1/0), and an aluminum version capable of producing aluminum strands up to a maximum cross section of 60 mm² (1.5/0). Lay lengths can be infinitely varied up to 300 mm, while rotational speed can reach a maximum of 3,200 twists/min. The D 1001 is optimally suited for large wire rope lay strands and battery cables of copper and aluminum, and is available both in left and right-hand versions. With spool flange diameters up to 1000 mm, and spool widths up to 750 mm, this buncher is capable of handling the widest of the DIN1000 spools. Spool changeover is easily achieved using the electrical spool lifting mechanism and the pneumatically powered pintles. The D Series and its Features The NIEHOFF D series is now comprised of six different bunching machine sizes that share the same design, technical features, options, and advantages: models 401, 561, 631, 761, 801 and the newly introduced 1001.

The D series family of bunchers allow full coverage of a wide range of bunched products from fine to heavy strands, i.e. 0.013 mm² to 50 mm², which is an advantage to minimize equipment cross training requirements of operators in the bunching department. The NIEHOFF bunchers are operator friendly and economical to operate. One major feature of this series of bunchers is the single bow design resulting in considerable energy savings and noise emission reduction compared to conventional bunching machines. The number of slip rings has been reduced through the use of telemetry for data transfer. Slip rings are used only for power transfer. The result is a reliable troublefree operation with reduced maintenance and downtime. Winding tension throughout the spool filling cycle is controlled via a load cell and dancer situated in the spool carrier. The driven haul-off

capstan enables a continuous adjustment of the lay length, and thus a maximum production flexibility. All production parameters are set on the machines HMI’s touch screen, and are clearly displayed together with all service messages. NIEHOFF is using state-of-the-art, three-phase AC drive technology in the buncher, thus reducing motor maintenance requirements to a minimum. For all bunching machine models NIEHOFF optionally offers the NBAT system (NIEHOFF Bunching Automatic Traverse). Here spool flanges are detected automatically, and traverse width of empty and full spools is controlled optimally by means of optoelectronic sensors, without the machine operator’s intervention. The strands can be paid-off tangle-free and without wire damages, even at very high speeds, as the spools are filled perfectly.

No Cable – No Power Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. (BCC), Bangkok, Thailand
In the last decades, Thailand became internationally very famous for its extraordinary economic growth. One basis for this success is the Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. (BCC), one of Thailand’s leading wire and cable manufacturers. BCC’s fundamental business idea has always been that electric wire and cable are the country‘s essential power transmitting tools. In a company brochure this idea is expressed in the short words: “No Cable – No Power”. Today, BCC has a workforce of 720 persons who are busy in two factories in Thailand and one in Bangladesh. Continuous development BCC was founded in August 1964. Since then a continuous development programme has been realized with the aim to apply always manufacturing equipment and technology which comply with the current state-of-the-art. Simultaneously, BCC has established cooperation agreements with renowned wire and cable manufacturers like Tatsuta and Hitachi of Japan. Moreover, the production areas and the production ranges of the two BCC plants based at Bangpakong-Chachoengsao in Chachoengsao Province and at Samutprakam in Samut Prakam Province have been enlarged. Joint venture projects were realized, like the Hitachi Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. In the year 2007 the Bangkok Cable (Bangladesh) Limited was
established which is specialized in manufacturing electric wires and cables made of copper and aluminum to satisfy the growing demand in Bangladesh.
Products and markets In the beginning, BCC manufactured and distributed electric wires and cables to supply mainly home building installations, concentrating on meeting demands of provincial customers. Later the company has expanded to include commercial and governmental clientele among its predominantly Thai business, and has begun marketing its products to Australia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and India. By means of modern production equipment and a quality control system which corresponds to international standards, BCC manufactures now a wide range of copper and aluminum electric wires and cables with or without PVC, PE or XLPE insulation. Besides bare conductors, the production range includes building wires and cables, low, medium and high voltage power cables, control cables, as well as flexible wires and cables. BCC also makes special fl ame-retardant, fire-resistant, low smoke halogen free and vermin proof cables. Relocating to the new factory As was already reported in “Power & Trends“, Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF is currently having a new factory built at the company’s headquarters in Schwabach. This completely new factory will meet the requirements of the expanded production program and the increased order volumes. Despite being hampered by the weather at the start of the year, building work is
Thomas Konrad transfers to NHM On October 1, NIEHOFF employee Thomas Konrad (48) will be transferring from the company headquarters to NIEHOFF-Herborn Máquinas (NHM), NIEHOFF’s Brazilian subsidiary, where he will be in charge of sales of NHM-built machines in Brazil and the neighbouring countries, as well as sales of German-built NIEHOFF machines in South America. Thomas Konrad, who is fluent in Portuguese, grew up in Brazil Thomas Konrad where he attended a German school and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering in São Paulo before coming to NHM in 1983. In subsequent years he was responsible here for adapting NIEHOFF components to national standards and requirements, implementing quality assurance
progressing according to schedule, and – after around a year in construction – the first departments are gearing up for relocation to the new building. These first departments will be the assembly department, the paintshop (which will be receiving a painting plant equipped with state of the art painting technology), the test plant, where drawing plants, bunching machines, braiding machines, stranders and coilers run through their final tests, and two workshops in which NIEHOFF staff employed in all technical departments will be trained. The date for the move is set for 5 October 2009, and it is scheduled to last four to six weeks. The new factory will have more space and better designed workplaces. As the result, workflows will be more efficient and the work involved in handling and allocating materials and in processing orders will be reduced. The new building marks an important investment for NIEHOFF as it will help the company strengthen and further improve its competitiveness for the future.

没有电缆–没有电力 Bangkok Cable Co., Ltd. 备，包括MM 85大拉机、镀锡生产线、多头拉丝机和束线机 也将安装在新厂内。 Power & Trends: 高质量的设备以及士气高昂、技术纯熟的 员工是企业在具有挑战性的市场条件下成功的必备条件。 江润铜业还有什么措施来确保符合国际水平的质量标准的 呢？ 骆总：2008年，作为国家标准起草单位之一，参与修订了 《电工圆铜线》、 《镀锡圆铜线》及《电工软铜绞线》的标 准，同年被上海期货交易所认定为电解铜注册试验工厂。我 们相信我们的客户对我们的这些付出是满意的，而且这也 是能够成为诸如Nexans, Prysmian, Essex, Delphi, Sumitomo, Hitachi, LS 和Tyco这样一些国际知名企业接受的唯一方法。 顺便说一句，这些公司都是我们的客户。 Power & Trends: 骆总，感谢您在此次采访中给我们和我们 读者的有价值的建议，希望您和江润铜业能够取得更大的 成功。
