Black Forest, Germany

It’s no surprise that the dense woodlands, scenic waterfalls and tiny villages of the Black Forest (or Schwarzwald) were the inspiration for the world-famous Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The largest nature reserve in Germany has a magical atmosphere that is heightened by the enchanting colours of autumn. From the elegant spa resort of Baden-Baden to the charming medieval town of Freiburg, the rolling hills are covered in trees and the mix of evergreen pines with spruce, larch and oak make for a dazzling display of colours. Side note for foodies: try Black Forest cake, the delicious local treat made with chocolate, cherries and cream.

Kyoto, Japan

Perhaps most famous for its annual Springtime cherry blossom viewing or hanami, Japan has an equally colourful equivalent in autumn. The leaf-viewing tradition, known as koyo, typically begins in mid-September in northern Japan and works its way down with the changing weather. The huge variety of maples will range from deep red to bright gold, while Japanese sumac, gingko, poplar and elm all add to the eye-popping burst of colour. The historical city of Kyoto is considered one of the best spots for koyo with maple trees in almost every temple, shrine and garden. But for a real treat head to the breath-taking Tofukuji Temple – it’s popular for a reason.
