and to be honest, I am very happy with the way it has turned out! This year we decided to start travelling the world and distribute the magazine in other countries as well, taking the spirit and atmosphere of Ibiza out for a ride. I have to admit, my understanding of ambiguity was a grey area. It’s the kind of word that takes a little thinking to explain and can have many different interpretations. Eager to get other people’s opinions on the meaning of being ambiguous, I asked around. Like I expected, I was given many different opinions on what people thought ambiguity was. And then, it hit me! That’s the point. The word is a self-fulfilling prophecy that allows so many clarifications, that the definition needs no explanation. Those struggling to understand need to clear their mind, refrain from over thinking and all of a sudden, it will become apparent. Ambiguity is free, it’s a little bit confused and allows the subject at hand to be whatever you want it to be. Ambiguity allows you to be creative, inspiring, individual, UNIQUE. The word ambiguous isn’t a grey area of understanding, the world is a grey area without it. With the c o l l o q u y, the world is multi-coloured, with lashings of sparkle and a fluorescent kick that grabs your eye. Ambiguity is quite simply ambiguous. It pushes the boundaries and makes each and every one of our human race unexampled yet linked in so many ways. Ambiguity allows for heart racing and intoxicating euphoria, and without it, how colourless would we be?

WHAT’S AN OPENING FIESTA LIKE AS AN INSIDER? DJ AND PRODUCER PAUL DAREY, RESIDENT IN SPACE IBIZA, IS ALREADY AN EXPERT. HE HAS BEEN PLAYING CONSECUTIVELY FOR FOUR YEARS AT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS OF THE SEASON. THE DJ EXPLAINS THE IDIOSYNCRASIES FOLLOWING A RITUAL THAT FOR CLUBBERS, WHO TURN UP EVERY YEAR, MEANS ONE THING: THAT SUMMER HAS ALREADY STARTED - AND THE PARTY AT SPACE IBIZA.

ANOTHER YEAR AT SPACE OPENING FIESTA. WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A PROFESSIONAL DJ TO PLAY HERE? It can be compared to putting a Formula 1 driver in a Ferrari. I have played all over the world, in the best nightclubs in Asia, Europe and America, but playing at an Opening or Closing is reaching the top. WHAT IS THE ENERGY OF AN OPENING AND CLOSING LIKE? It is similar people give it their all because they mark the beginning and the end of the season, not only at Space but on the whole island. At the Opening people let it all hang out, they really go for it. There are loads of people, DJs, rooms… And they come from all over the world in May and October. They are not there in August on holiday. They come especially! DOES THE SOUND AT SPACE EVOLVE FROM OPENING TO OPENING? I play the most recent mixes possible, I play promos, unreleased material that DJ friends have passed on to me. It is new, unheard music… I want people to say: “this sound is Space, I only hear this here”. WHAT DO YOU DO THE DAY AFTER A SPACE OPENING FIESTA? That day I am very tired. Although I tend to play for an hour and a half, afterwards I stay on. I make the most of it, to enjoy all the DJs there and the party itself because there won’t be another one like it until the Closing. The day after is a day to relax - I get up late and go to the beach to eat paella…

UN AÑO MÁS EN LA SPACE OPENING FIESTA. ¿QUÉ SIGNIFICA PINCHAR AHÍ PARA UN DJ PROFESIONAL? Se puede comparar con meter a un piloto de Fórmula 1 en un Ferrari. He pinchado por todo el mundo, en las mejores discotecas de Asia, Europa y América pero pinchar en un Opening o Closing es llegar al top. ¿CÓMO ES LA ENERGÍA DE UN OPENING Y UN CLOSING? Es similar, la gente lo da todo porque marcan el principio y final de la temporada no solo de Space sino de toda la isla. En el Opening la gente se vacía por dentro, va a por todas. Hay un montón de gente, de DJs, de salas… Y vienen de todo el mundo en mayo u octubre. No están en agosto de vacaciones. ¡Vienen especialmente! ¿EVOLUCIONA ESE SONIDO SPACE DE OPENING A OPENING? Pincho lo más actual posible, pongo promos, temas aún no a la venta que me han pasado amigos DJ. Es música nueva, desconocida… quiero que la gente diga: “este sonido es Space, esto solamente lo escucho aquí”. ¿QUÉ HACES EL DÍA DESPUÉS DE UNA SPACE OPENING FIESTA? Ese día estoy muy cansado. Aunque suelo pinchar una hora y media después me quedo, aprovecho para disfrutar de todos los DJs presentes y la fiesta en sí porque hasta el Closing no habrá otra igual. El día siguiente es de relax, me levanto tarde, voy a la playa a comer paella…

Not that taking a leap is something new to them. Gary’s quest to write music that doesn’t have a shelf-life and can’t be pigeon-holed, coupled with their liking for doing things that “blows the balls off everyone” means the group’s output of electronic music has never been easy to predict and their journey until now has encompassed many different sounds and influences. Now, the group are moving into a new realm - with Formula 1 team Caterham, resulting in their bespoke piece of music, RS27. This innovative project is the first of a number of Formula 1 inspired releases which incorporates visuals from the cockpit of the car, fusing perfectly with the power of the track and the electronic vision of the concept. Literally a musical journey, the Popstars track record of letting their imagination run wild and generally ending up with something innovative can also be seen in their former stuff. Playing on the Terrace hosted by UMF Ibiza and amongst a line-up which includes 2manydjs, Juanjo Martín, Mark Knight, Roger Sanchez and Arty, The Japanese Popstars say they might have to be squeezed off stage. Gary is already a fan of Space Ibiza and says that his best experience at the club was watching Felix Da Housecat in 2010. “It’s one of the best clubs I’ve ever been in, if not THE best. We’re excited because we’re not playing live, which can be restrictive because we play all our own music, but for Space we can tap into all the stuff we like. I’m not sure what the set time is, an hour, hour and a half. I’ll play until they kick me off!”

WE LOVE… HAS A FEW SURPRISES UP ITS SLEEVE. A BIG ONE OF WHICH IS NEW RESIDENTS INNERVISIONS WHO HAVE COMBINED UNDENIABLE FORCES IN HOUSE TO CREATE A POWERFUL, RECOGNISABLE SOUND. ONE OF THE FORCES, DIXON, SHARES HIS INSIGHT WITH SPACE MAGAZINE AND PREPARES US FOR…WE DON’T KNOW WHAT!

WE LOVE… TIENE UNAS CUANTAS SORPRESAS BAJO LA MANGA. UNA DE LAS IMPORTANTES ES LA RESIDENCIA DE INNERVISIONS, QUIEN AÚNA VARIAS DE LAS FUERZAS DEL HOUSE PARA CREAR UN SONIDO DISTINTIVO. UNA DE ESAS FUERZAS ES DIXON, QUIEN HABLÓ CON SPACE MAGAZINE Y NOS PREPARA PARA… NO SABEMOS TODAVÍA EL QUÉ!

Innervisions at We Love… it’s definitely going to be unexpected. “There is no master plan,” says Dixon, who is the driving force behind the Berlin music platform and who recently became a father for the first time. “I think each one of us is going to have a slot but I will also play back to back with Âme”. This of course means giving away a little of his freedom, a price he accepts reluctantly. “It’s hard for a German who likes to be in control,” he admits. As probably most DJs, Dixon likes to follow his own vision of the night. However, he goes on to add: “I like to play with DJs like Kristian from Âme because I connect with them, we share the same vision despite having different perspectives. So if you have a friend that you trust and like to play with, it can be refreshing.” Dixon reveals that although he and the rest of Innervisions has a new residency at Space, he thinks it’s a bit strange calling his next four performances at We Love… with duo Âme and Henrik Schwarz, just that. “I still have problems calling anything, that’s not at least once a week, a residency.” This comes after the Innervisions crew played at what many declared as one of the finest nights of summer last year – Resident Advisor was one example who said they “come alive in a unique way when playing altogether”. Innervisions bought its music to Space Ibiza five times during the last years. At first glance, being a resident might be difficult– making your crowd want to return to the same club every weekend. However it’s actually Dixon’s “dream situation.” “There’s a rationale behind it”, he tells us. “You have freedom to do whatever you want because you get to know the crowd and you know what they want. And since the crowd comes back looking for something they already know, they are more relaxed” he adds. In turn, this encourages extra risk taking. “It’s more fulfilling for me trying something different and maybe seeing the crowd not like it - but seeing ten people go crazy over it, purely because they never expected to hear anything like that.” And so this is where the DJ does their job: they create the unexpected – and this is indeed what Innervisions is trying to deliver. Their music label is a “playground” mirroring its members’ own artistic evolution. “We have a lot of interests that don’t belong to the club scene strictly speaking and we are trying to include those in the platform. For example, we started publishing books and even have a fashion label.” In the end, when we ask him for more details and what more we can reveal to our readers, he says: “It’s a party and it’s going to be fun. As simple as that.” There is a master plan after all.

Innervisions en We Love... va a ser sin duda inesperado. “No hay plan maestro”, cuenta Dixon, la fuerza impulsora detrás de esta plataforma musical de Berlín, quien ha sido padre por primera vez hace unos pocos meses. “Me parece que cada uno de nosotros tendrá un horario concreto”. También hará un back to back con Âme. Por supuesto, esto significa entregar un poco de su libertad, un precio que él acepta a regañadientes. “Es difícil para un alemán al que le gusta tener el control”, admite. Como probablemente la mayoría de los DJs, a Dixon le gusta seguir su propia visión de la noche. Sin embargo, finalmente explica: “Me gusta pinchar con DJs como Kristian de Âme, porque conecto con ellos, compartimos la misma visión a pesar de hacerlo desde diferentes perspectivas. Con un amigo en quien confías puede ser refrescante.” Dixon revela que aunque él y el resto de Innervisions (el dúo Âme y Henrik Schwarz ) tienen una residencia este verano en Space, piensa que es un poco extraño llamar así a sus próximas actuaciones en We Love... “Todavía tengo problemas para llamar residencia a cualquier cosa que no sea por lo menos una vez por semana”, admite. La residencia en Space llega después de que Innervisions pinchara en lo que para muchos fue una de las mejores noches del verano pasado. Un ejemplo es el de la web especializada Resident Advisor: “Los de Innervisions cobran vida de una manera única cuando pinchan juntos”. Innervisions ha traído su música a Space Ibiza en cinco ocasiones en los últimos años. A primera vista, ser un residente puede ser difícil: dejar al público con ganas de volver al mismo club cada fin de semana. Sin embargo, es la situación que Dixon considera “ideal.” “Hay una razón detrás de esto”, cuenta, “tienes libertad para hacer lo que quieras, conoces al público y sabes lo que desean”. Y puesto que la multitud retorna en busca de algo que ya conocen, “están más relajados”, añade. A su vez, fomenta tomar riesgos extra: “Es más gratificante para mí probar algo diferente y que tal vez no guste a la mayoría - pero que el tema vuelva locas a diez personas simplemente porque no esperaban oír nada por el estilo.” Y aquí es donde el DJ hace su trabajo: crea lo inesperado. Precisamente lo que Innervisions está tratando de lograr. Su sello discográfico es un “patio de recreo” reflejo de la evolución artística de sus miembros. “Tenemos una gran cantidad de intereses que no pertenecen a la escena clubber en sentido estricto, y estamos tratando de incluirlos. Por ejemplo, hemos publicado libros y diseñado ropa”. Al final, cuando se le pregunta sobre los detalles de su residencia dice: “Es una fiesta y va a ser divertida. Tan simple como eso.” Al final va a resultar que sí hay un plan maestro.

Japan is like a second home for me now. The crowds are amazing and are really up for anything. It’s really refreshing to have a crowd where you can play electro, dub step, drum and bass and house all in the same DJ set. I love Japan. WHAT’S BEEN THE BIG ANTHEM DURING YOUR TIME THERE?Julio Bashmore’s “Battle For Middle You” has been my joint out here. I really love this new future garage sound that’s appearing now. WHAT/WHO WOULD YOU CREDIT AS SOME OF YOUR INFLUENCES? I guess my early influences come from the early hip-hop DJs and the way they would cut and blend tunes in the mix very quickly. I guess my style is a hip-hop style - but instead of playing hip-hop I play electronic music. Musically, I love everything from house to drum and bass and I will reflect that in my sets this year. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS THIS SUMMER? My plan is to rock as many parties as I can. I’m really looking forward to all the UK festivals this year and of course my Space residency! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR MUSIC CROSSING INTO THE HOME OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC? I feel incredibly honored to be a part of Space this year. I played the club last year four times and I loved it. I cannot wait to spin my own brand of electronic music. It’s just gonna be amazing. WHAT IS IT ABOUT SPACE THAT MAKES IT SUCH A SPECIAL CLUB? The sound system and lighting rigs are absolutely world class. You definitely feel like a superstar DJ when you play there. It was my dream ever since I started DJing in Ibiza to play in Space. And now I’m a resident this year, my dream has come true! I feel very lucky indeed! WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IBIZA? Everything. I’ve been on the island for many years and have a lot of good friends on the island. From Jade Jagger to my man Neil Inkadelik. I know the island very well. WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO HANG OUT THERE? I can usually be found at Neil Inkadeliks tattoo spot in the old town. WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT? Next? Well I’m currently in Japan, then I’ve got a festival gig with Peter Hook from New Order. I’m super excited about that. I’ve been a fan of New Order since I was a teenager. Then after that? I’m getting ready to rock the hell outta Ibiza. Trust me, I’m coming full guns blazing!

Me encanta Japón. ¿CUÁL HA SIDO EL TEMA MÁS ESCUCHADO DURANTE TU TIEMPO ALLÍ? “Battle for Middle You” de Julio Bashmore ha sido mi tema allí. Me gusta mucho este nuevo sonido future garage que está apareciendo ahora. ¿QUÉ O QUIÉN RECONOCERÍAS COMO ALGUNAS DE TUS INFLUENCIAS? Supongo que mis influencias tempranas vienen de los primeros DJs de hip-hop y la velocidad con la que fusionaban temas en la mezcla. Supongo que mis estilo es un estilo hip-hop – pero en vez de pinchar hip-hop pincho música electrónica. Musicalmente, me encanta todo desde el house al drum and bass y esto se verá reflejado en mis sets este año. ¿CUÁLES SON TUS PLANES PARA ESTE VERANO? Mi plan es animar todas las fiestas que pueda. Me hacen mucha ilusión todos los festivales en el Reino Unido este año ¡y cómo no, mi residencia en Space! ¿CÓMO TE SIENTES ACERCA DE QUE TU MÚSICA SE CRUCE AL ÁMBITO DE LA MÚSICA ELECTRÓNICA? Yes right now we are joining our new album and putting the final touches on it. This is a monumental week. We will be touring extensively from the summer and releasing a lot of tracks with remixes from the album. No, it is exactly that. Very electronic with a warm sound and a lot of emotion. Our hearts and souls are in this. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND? Deep, intricate, clean yet dirty, warm, melodic tribal tech house. WHAT’S YOUR VIEWS ON LIVE MUSIC HITTING IBIZA? For me, it should be once in a while or small and intimate. Call me biased, but for me Ibiza is about parties with DJs and maybe some percussion.

“IF YOU START THINKING ABOUT IT TOO HARD, IT ALL STARTS GOING WRONG” LAURA JONES QUICKLY FOUND HER PLACE AS A FULL-TIME DJ/PRODUCER AFTER TAKING THE PLUNGE INTO THE ELECTRONIC SCENE. HER INSPIRATION CAME FROM SIMPLY WATCHING OTHER DJS AND DECIDING TO APPLY HER PASSION FOR MUSIC - AND JUST GOING FOR IT. AND HERE SHE IS. IT SEEMS A LITTLE AMBIGUOUS THAT A GIRL WITH CLASSICAL MUSIC TRAINING TURNED INTO AN ELECTRONIC DJ/ PRODUCER NOW IN THE LIMELIGHT. HOW DID IT HAPPEN? I think you can take inspiration from things you experience when you’re growing up, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to end up doing them. The music I produce is very melodic and it might not have been so, had I not been classically trained from an early age. LOVE IN ME REACHED NUMBER 1 IN BEATPORT FOR SEVERAL CONSECUTIVE WEEKS. IS THERE A BEFORE AND AFTER TO THAT SONG IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? “Love In Me” was definitely the catalyst that kick-started everything, along with the release of my track “Live A Little” on Visionquest. The two being released around the same time actually ended up working out really well. So much so I was able to start making music full-time, which I really didn’t think would ever happen. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LAURA JONES’ VISION AND SETS? Some people have told me I have a deep and mysterious sound. It’s funny because when they’re your own productions that you sit and listen to over and over again in the studio before releasing them, you lose perspective of whether they have an identity of their own. Making music for me has been more about trial and error than following a strict formula. If you start thinking about it too hard, it all starts going wrong. IS IT RIGHT THAT YOU DECIDED ONE DAY TO BECOME A DJ WHILE AT DC10? Yeah, it was in the summer of 2005 when doing my first and only season in Ibiza. I remember watching Tania Vulcano specifically but also remember Dan Ghenacia and Clive Henry standing out at the time - and was literally so inspired by the whole thing that I decided to come back and give it a go myself. I’ve always been super passionate about music for as long as I can remember so it made sense. WHAT ARE YOU DOING AT THE MOMENT? I’m about to release a new remix of Alex Anrout’s “Movements In Soul”. I’ve also just finished a mix compilation CD for Leftroom, the first in a series called “Leftroom Presents” which is due for release end of May. Release-wise, I’m finishing EPs for Visionquest and Leftroom and working on new material. WHO’S INSPIRING YOU NOW? I’m really loving Sam Russo’s production especially his collaborations with Huxley. He’s got a really sharp ear for timeless deep house and I’ve been rinsing their latest collaboration “Jamma’s Basement”.

PARECE UN POCO CONTRADICTORIO QUE UNA CHICA CON FORMACIÓN EN MÚSICA CLÁSICA SE HAYA CONVERTIDO EN DJ/PRODUCTORA DE MÚSICA ELECTRÓNICA. ¿CÓMO SUCEDIÓ? Creo que se puede tomar inspiración de cosas que experimentas cuando estás creciendo, pero no necesariamente significa que tienes que terminar haciéndolas. La música que produzco es muy melódica y puede que no hubiera sido así si no hubiera sido clásicamente entrenada desde una edad temprana. LOVE IN ME LLEGÓ A NÚMERO 1 EN BEATPORT DURANTE VARIAS SEMANAS SEGUIDAS. ¿HAY UN ANTES Y UN DESPUÉS DE ESA CANCIÓN EN TU CARRERA PROFESIONAL? “Love In Me” fue sin duda el catalizador que puso todo en marcha, junto al lanzamiento de mi track “Live A Little” en Visionquest. Que los dos temas salieran a la vez en realidad acabó funcionando muy bien. Tan bien que me permitió dedicarme a la música full-time, lo cual realmente nunca pensé que iba a suceder. ¿CÓMO DESCRIBIRÍAS LA VISIÓN Y LOS SETS DE LAURA JONES? Algunas personas me han dicho que tengo un sonido profundo y misterioso. Es curioso, porque cuando son tus propias producciones que te pones a escucharlas una y otra vez en el estudio antes de lanzarlas y pierdes la perspectiva de si tienen identidad propia. Hacer música para mí ha sido más una cuestión de aprender de los errores que de seguir una fórmula estricta. Si te pones a pensar demasiado en ello, todo empieza a ir mal. ¿ES CIERTO QUE TE DECIDISTE A SER DJ UN DÍA QUE ESTABAS EN DC10? Sí, fue en el verano de 2005 cuando estaba haciendo mi primera y única temporada en Ibiza. Recuerdo en especial ver a Tania Vulcano, pero también recuerdo a Dan Ghenacia y a Clive Henry destacando en esa época – y estaba literalmente tan inspirada por toda la escena que decidí volver e intentarlo yo misma. Desde que tengo memoria he sido una súper apasionada de la música, así que parecía lógico. ¿EN QUÉ ESTÁS TRABAJANDO AHORA? If I wasn’t making music I would probably be cooking, that’s how much I like it. I try to explore the culture through the food, because a lot of times that’s all we see. You can’t explore culture when you are in a hotel or a club. So when you experience it that way you feel connected - then I’m able to perform at my peak. We have to be in top physical shape. For the three months when it’s crazy in Ibiza you can’t take yourself out of that and try having a schedule like you have in winter. There’s so much pressure on being creative and conducting a beneficial business. YOU NEED TO BE MAKING HITS CONSTANTLY? Yes, and it’s hard with all these pressures. Today was supposed to be a day where I could sit on the studio and work. Instead, I checked my emails and I was on it until I came here. It’s background noise: meetings, calls, emails… it prevents you from being in a cocoon where it’s you and your ideas. All this can be suffocating. THEN HOW DO YOU DO IT? As technologically advanced as I am… I still work the old-school way with little pieces of paper! It’s really difficult making music and being creative. Being realistic, there are tons of DJs that manufacture. WHAT DO YOU MEAN? There are people who care about the craft, want to better themselves and make something that stands the test of time and there are people who lack creativity and manufacture it using technology or other tools. I’ve never gravitated towards pop-culture. YOU MEAN YOU HAVEN’T DONE COMMERCIAL MUSIC? I’ve done commercial work but I’ve never been attracted to pop culture. We can talk about all the commercial things that Deep Dish has done. ALL DJS DO IT, RIGHT? IT GIVES THEM A LOT OF MONEY. Exactly. It’s success, and that’s appealing. Money wise, everybody wants it. Sure, Madonna coming on stage for Avicii was a huge ego boost, it makes you feel important. Same reason why years ago when she asked us to open for her I was like ‘wow’ even though at the time I didn’t care for Madonna, but the fact that she’s calling and you are getting this much money thrown at you - that can be like a drug. Success can be like a drug. DO OTHER DJS JUDGE YOU FOR THINGS LIKE THESE? All DJs judge each other. In the techno community I had to really win everyone’s respect and admiration by rolling up my sleeve and proving what I’m capable off musically speaking. And it wasn’t something I was craving, it was just being me. So, yeah, you are being judged. Every time.

Si no me dedicara a la música, estaría cocinando. Trato de explorar la cultura a través de la comida, porque muchas veces eso es todo lo que veo. No se puede explorar la cultura desde un hotel o un club. Así que cuando lo experimento de esta forma me siento conectado con el lugar – y entonces es cuando soy capaz de darlo todo. Además, con este ritmo es necesario estar en buena forma física. Durante los meses de temporada en Ibiza, uno no puedo pretender tener un horario como en invierno. Y la presión por ser creativo y llevar un negocio que sea beneficioso es constante. ¿NECESITAS ESTAR HACIENDO CONSTANTEMENTE GRANDES TEMAS? Es difícil; hay todo tipo de presiones. Hoy se suponía que era un día en el que podía sentarme en el estudio. Pero decidí revisar mis mails y en ello estuve hasta que vine aquí. Es un ‘ruido de fondo’: reuniones, llamadas, mails... te impiden estar en un capullo donde estéis tú y tus ideas. ENTONCES, ¿CÓMO LO HACES? Tan tecnológicamente avanzado como soy y lo cierto es que sigo trabajando a lo old-school, con trozos de papel. Es realmente difícil hacer música y ser creativo, de hecho, siendo realistas, hay muchos DJs que se dedican solo a ‘fabricar’. ¿A QUÉ TE REFIERES? Hay gente que se preocupa por este arte, que busca superarse y hacer algo que resista el paso del tiempo. Luego hay personas que carecen de creatividad y la ‘fabrican’ mediante la tecnología. Yo nunca he gravitado hacia la cultura pop. ¿QUIERES DECIR QUE NO HAS HECHO MÚSICA COMERCIAL? He hecho trabajo comercial, pero nunca me he sentido atraído por la cultura pop. Si quieres podemos hablar de todas las cosas comerciales que Deep Dish ha hecho… TODOS LOS DJS LO HACEN, ¿VERDAD? LES DA UN MONTÓN DE DINERO. Exactamente. Les da éxito y eso es muy atractivo. Todo el mundo lo quiere. Por supuesto, Madonna subiendo al escenario para presentar a Avicii fue una manera de engrandecer su ego, de hacerle sentir importante. Fue por esta misma razón el motivo por qué años atrás, cuando ella nos pidió que abriésemos para ella lo hicimos… a pesar de que en ese momento a mí no me gustaba Madonna. Sin embargo el hecho de que ella te llame a ti y que te tiren encima esta cantidad de dinero puede ser como una droga. El éxito puede ser como una droga. ¿LOS DEMÁS DJS TE JUZGAN POR COSAS COMO ÉSTAS? Todos los DJs nos juzgamos unos a otros. Dentro del mundo del techno tuve que ganarme el respeto de todos a base de demostrar de lo que soy capaz. Y esto no era algo que yo ansiase, simplemente estaba siendo yo mismo. Así que, sí, estoy siendo juzgado. Sin parar.

The free spirits who make Ibiza special have been captured. That is, in an exclusive collection of photos in an impressive hard-backed book, aptly named Ibiza Portraits. Just launched by French photographer Jérôme Ferrière, an abundance of world famous faces synonymous with Ibiza, as well as “faces” of the international community stare out from the black and white pictures taken on the island between 1997 and 2012. Carl Cox, Jade Jagger and Pete Tong are all there, including an innocent looking David and Cathy Guetta in a shot taken five years ago. Jérôme says: “The book is not about famous faces – it’s about personalities. The idea grew out of a collaboration between the two musicians on Luciano’s new album to be released this autumn. “We thought it would be fun. Lenny is a great musician and it inspires me to work with him”, Luciano tells Space Magazine when asked about the details of the back to back set they’ll be doing at the 123 Festival, Ibiza’s first major event of this type. What Luciano’s electronic music fused with Lenny Kravitz’s psychedelic rock is going to sound like is still a secret, but one thing for sure: it will have “Luciano’s energy”, the DJ assures us. The 123 Festival will be held in San Antonio (Ibiza) on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of July. The huge line-up also features Elton John, Sting, Pete Tong, Fatboy Slim, Tinie Tempah and P’NAU. La idea surgió a raíz de la colaboración entre los dos músicos en el nuevo álbum de Luciano, que saldrá este otoño. “Pensamos que sería muy divertido. Becoming part of the landscape and much more than just an art exhibition, BLOOP returns to Ibiza from July 15th to August 31st. The nerve centre of the festival this year is disused lighthouse and San Antonio’s Maritime Museum - El Far de Ses Coves Blanques. However the essential concept of BLOOP is to interweave art with the territory around it and “design a new Ibiza”. Be prepared to see the whole landscape transformed with artwork in the form of sounds, images, lights and colours.

The ultimate in hard wearing fashion, Manuel Albarrán’s exclusive custom-made creations will be available to buy in Ibiza this summer. The London 2012 Festival, a 12-week event running from 21 June – 9 September to celebrate the Olympic Games, has one key theme: ‘art in unusual places’. Want an example? A barge full of comedians, aerial acrobatics in cathedrals, a coach perched on an art gallery roof, and poetry installations on remote beaches. You will hear music coming from the sky too, as a string quartet is streamed live from helicopters. Some of Great Britain’s top heritage sites will also be transformed as part of the Festival, including Stonehenge. El London 2012 Festival, un evento de doce semanas de duración (desde el 21 de junio hasta el 9 de setiembre) creado como celebración de los Juegos Olímpicos, tiene un lema clave: “arte en lugares inusuales”. Un ejemplo: un barco lleno de comediantes, acrobacias aéreas en catedrales, un coche encaramado al techo de una galería de arte, instalaciones sobre poesía en playas remotas... También se escuchará música en el cielo, ya que un cuarteto de cuerda tocará en vivo desde helicópteros. Algunos de los más conocidos monumentos de Gran Bretaña también se transformarán en el marco del festival incluyendo Stonehenge.

A GARDEN IN THE RUNWAY It’s been a year now since Neuköln’s residents started going to the runway to get their lettuces. Very close to this working class neighbourhood in Berlin is the former Templehof Airport, closed in 2010 and now a huge playground for citizens. Cyclists, skaters, strollers, and even Sunday Sthat’s almost the size of Central Park in New York. And so successful has the urban gardening initiative been - that to be a part of it, one has to be on the waiting list! Hace ya un año que los vecinos de Neuköln van a por sus lechugas a la pista de aterrizaje. Muy cercano a este barrio obrero de Berlín se encuentra el antiguo aeropuerto de Templehof, cerrado en 2010 y ahora un enorme campo de juego para los ciudadanos. NOT JUST FOR SKATERS BY TANIT PARADA-TUR

Like most good ideas do, this one hit Baptiste Vuerich when he least expected it – making sunglasses with his skateboards. He had transformed old skateboards into furniture before, but it wasn’t until being blinded by the sun while looking at a mirror, that the idea occurred to him. Thus began an adventure with his brother Gianni that materialised in a series of three recently launched models of sunglasses; from the classic Transition and Cruisin’ to the edgier Rad. It takes around seven hours to create each one of these unique pieces, sold not only to skate enthusiasts but anyone “who cares about the environment and has a taste for the unconventional,” according to Baptiste.

Whilst impeccable production, family and friends all contribute to the success of We Love’s… longstanding Ibiza reign, it’s the quality of the artists who remain the staple ingredient in creating something so special and why so many people have become a part of its stronghold. The opening fiesta of We Love Space 2012 is set to define the season ahead. After a special singular performance last summer, the Innervisions collective are back on the Terraza (for the first of four shows) in the form of Dixon, Ame and Henrik Schwarz. They’re bringing their own delectable take on their label’s back catalogue and beyond, with support from the ever affable Tensnake and seasoned campaigner Ryan O’Gorman. Meanwhile, in the Discoteca an old friend is reviving an alias in the form of Carl Craig’s 69.

Dance legends, hot artists and rising stars come together with energy-packed cuts that push the limits of euphoric sound. Exciting announcements for this year include our trio of Ibiza Calling resident DJs – Roger Sanchez, Wally Lopez and Juanjo Martín. House legend Roger Sanchez is set to master the decks with the unique, signature sets that have maintained his reign and huge popularity over the years. Visioneer, pioneer and remixer Wally Lopez is set to lay down groovy basslines abound and fellow Spanish boundary breaker Juanjo Martín has made a leap back to Space Ibiza, the club he loves best, for 2012 and brings an entirely new notion of mainstream fused with underground. Carl Cox is with Space right from the moment it opens. Speaking firstly about Space Opening Fiesta, Carl says: “I kind of like the idea that summer’s got the key to Ibiza. It’s been locked away and with Space Opening, someone’s opened the door – and everyone just runs through the gates like wwaaahheeyy!! That’s what it feels like – every record, every single smile, the vibe – it feels like people have been unleashed.” Going on to talk about his own party this summer, Revolution Recruits, don’t expect business as usual. After ten seasons at Space Ibiza featuring some of the most renowned DJs in the world, Carl is opening up the ranks to welcome a whole army of new talent. This year’s Revolution is going to be eclectic, loud, and unforgettable with the likes of Laurent Garnier, Dubfire, Fatboy Slim, John Digweed, Nicole Moudaber, Just Be and Guti (live) – as well of course alongside a whole host of brand new faces.

Beat & Raw will be the new Friday party at Space Ibiza. This is a new concept breaking conventions: an urban-feel party that plays with the stories of two characters. Beat is always on full power and is represented by the Terrace of the club, whereas his partner Raw, on the other hand, is totally wild and unpredictable. He will be represented by the Main Room with live performances and concerts with urban collective flavours mostly from hip-hop, drum & bass, R&B with hints of techno. The opening date is July 6th, kicking off with performances from the legendary Californian hip-hop group Cypress Hill, who will be joining Violadores del Verso, as well as DJs Jekey and Allan Ramirez, while dub step will be represented by Dub Elements and Don Diablo. The Temper Trap, and Jaguar Skills - the terrorist of dubstep – is just one of the residents raring to go on the Terrace this summer. Be prepared.

Beautiful burlesque at its best with a hand-crafted gloss of naughty glamour, multi-sexual fun, live performances and the best house meets disco music on the planet – Café Olé is back for another season of sultry, sequined surprises. Every Saturday night, Space will be turned into a hot-bed (literally) of superstars, international DJs, acrobats, live performances, leather-clad, often sparkly, beautifully sculpted dancers and with a weekly changing-theme, this can mean said performers posing in rotating moons one week, and trying to escape from double-tier cages the next, as we explore Motel Café Olé, Burlesque, Back to Disco and the darker world of Pervert. The theme Motel Café Olé opens the doors to a summer of events which explores and celebrates the undefinable freedom of music, beauty and ingenuity at the opening party on June 16th. The Japanese Popstars, House South Brothers and the beautiful, ambigious Spanish screen icon turned DJ Rossy de Palma have already booked in for a night of full-on fun, along with Patrizze, and Jose Maria Ramon amongst others - all of whom are Café Olé favourites and will be making numerous appearances throughout the season.

Talking about Opening Fiesta with Pepe Roselló WITH THE SPACE OPENING FIESTA - AN EVENT THAT “MARKS THE STARTING POINT FOR A RACE THAT WE ALL HAVE TO RUN” - AROUND THE CORNER, SPACE CREATOR PEPE ROSELLÓ SPENDS HIS TIME WALKING AROUND THE MARKET IN IBIZA TOWN, HANDING OUT INVITATIONS TO HIS FISHMONGER, BUTCHER ETC… THE IBIZA NATIVE HAS SPENT A LIFETIME DEVOTED TO MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT, A FEAT THAT HAS EARNED HIM THE AFFECTION OF MANY PEOPLE ON THE ISLAND, AND OFF IT. “JUST THIS MORNING MY DENTIST SENT ME A MESSAGE ASKING ME TO REMEMBER HIM FOR THE OPENING”, HE SAYS, LAUGHING. OVER THE PAST YEAR IBIZA HAS SUFFERED HAVING FEW AIR CONNECTIONS. DO YOU THINK THIS AFFECTS THE ISLAND’S ECONOMY? Airlines’ behaviour is absurd. We are paying for our reputation; companies benefit outrageously from a surcharge to get to Ibiza, punishing it as a destination. In summer, flights to Ibiza, scheduled at the same time as to Palma, are 40% more expensive than flights to Majorca. I dislike talking about these issues because Ibiza always comes out penalized vis-à-vis the Majorcan market. Besides, politicians don’t know how to solve this problem which gravely affects the island’s economy, I think it’s its Achilles heel. ARE THE SO-CALLED “BEACH CLUBS” CHANGING THE STATUS QUO OF ENTERTAINMENT IN IBIZA? This phenomenon is generating positive things: employment, a growing public and changes in the

daytime schedules. Nevertheless, what is happening is that music is being worn out: everybody uses the same shoe size, nothing is invented. There is no creative element. In Ibiza, DJs are being auctioned. A DJ playing here goes up in value from one year to the next. I pay so much for this DJ, and then he will go and negotiate to see who gives him more. There are very few DJs who identify with a club. The music market is being overexploited. The company that I launched in 1989 was called Space Beach Club, so that concept was already in my mind and in my heart 23 years ago. I think that the experience is positive, as music opens to the sea. The problem lies in the way we compete with each other. WHY DOES SPACE SUPPORT SPORT-RELATED ACTIVITIES? We have always been big supporters of sport in Ibiza and we are very proud of it. Through sport, many youngsters have redefined themselves as human beings; we collaborate not only because of the sport itself, but also because of the moral and social aspects. Sport reinforces people’s will to protect themselves from external agents, which are the ones that affect the development of young people. DO YOU MEAN YOUNG PEOPLE’S CAPACITY TO PROTECT THEMSELVES AGAINST DRUGS? Drugs have a double standard based on Judeo-Christian culture. Our society hasn’t taken on board the real problem that exists. How can you understand that in a coffee shop in Holland you can choose the kind of hash you want, and on the other side of the border you can be arrested for it? That confuses people. What should be consumed is music, not drugs. It is music that creates the drive to unload the adrenaline, and the empathy and rapport created with the public comes through music, through movement and expression of the body.

la música: todo el mundo usa el mismo número de zapato, no se inventa nada. No hay fondo creativo. En Ibiza se están subastando los DJs. Un DJ que pinche aquí, de un año para otro se revaloriza. Yo pago tanto por este DJ y luego él va a negociar a ver quién le da más. Son pocos los DJs que se identifican con un club. El mercado de la música se está exprimiendo demasiado. La empresa que abrí en 1989 se llamaba Space Beach Club, así que ese concepto ya estaba en mi mente y en mi corazón hace 23 años. Creo que la experiencia es positiva ya que la música se abre al mar. El problema es la competencia que nos hacemos unos a otros. ¿POR QUÉ APOYA SPACE ACTIVIDADES RELACIONADAS CON EL DEPORTE? Hemos sido siempre grandes patrocinadores del deporte en Ibiza y estamos muy orgullosos de ello. A través del deporte muchos jóvenes han recuperado su propia definición humana, colaboramos no sólo por lo deportivo sino también lo moral y social. Con el deporte se refuerza la voluntad de la gente para protegerse de agentes externos que son los que inciden en el desarrollo de los jóvenes. ¿LA CAPACIDAD DE LOS JÓVENES PARA PROTEGERSE FRENTE A LAS DROGAS? Las drogas tienen una doble moral fundamentada en la cultura judeocristiana. Nuestra sociedad no ha asumido un problema que existe. ¿Cómo se puede entender que en Holanda puedas escoger el tipo de hachís en un coffee shop y al otro lado de la frontera te puedan detener por ello? Eso confunde a la gente. Lo que se tiene que consumir es la música, no la droga. Es la música la que crea un dinamismo que te va a hacer descargar la adrenalina, la empatía que se crea con el público es a través de la música, de la expresión corporal. LA GENTE PUEDE PASARLO BIEN DISFRUTANDO DE LA MÚSICA, SIN MÁS QUE ESO. Con los años hemos demostrado que nuestro mensaje y nuestra actividad ha ido siempre al compás de la música. Y el público nos ha favorecido con su estima y aceptación. Él es el verdadero protagonista, nosotros somos sólo una forma de transmisión. Disfruto con las emociones que me transmite nuestro público. IF YOU TYPE “AMBIGUOUS” INTO GOOGLE, THE RESULTS YOU’LL FIND ARE MOSTLY BAD. HOWEVER, TODAY THE TERM TAKES A DIFFERENT VALUE - IT’S A PLUS. The fashion world always allows the possibility of ambiguity to play and express itself. Take a step back in time: in the twenties, Mademoiselle Coco Chanel freed women from the constrictions of the corset and Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich were the first icons of androgynous beauty. In the seventies there were Twiggy and David Bowie. In the eighties was Giorgio Armani with his businesswoman statement with male jackets, and there were Annie Lennox and Boy George. From that moment on, the fashion system has continued to play on the attraction that humans have for the Giorgio Armani other-than-self. New top models are evidence of this: androgynous and super feminine at the same time, like Freja Beha or Aymelie Valade; or young male models like Andrej Pejic, maybe a real new future rule of beauty. A particular case which is even more extreme is Lea T, born a man but now a female supermodel; she plays with her ambiguity and carries this idea that it’s not the easiest of deGucci cisions to choose to change sex. Las similitudes son sorprendentes. En la superficie tenéis la conexión Mugler, Assaad Awad, el cine, la música, incluso vuestras caras se parecen un poco. Pero profundizando, ambas aportáis un elemento de sorpresa, que nunca se ha visto antes, y todo el glam aparte, esto es lo que marca a un verdadero artista. ¿Cómo te sientes respecto a esto? r: No sé qué decir… Es cierto que Gaga es como una criatura de los años 80 nacida hoy, y compartimos muchos rasgos – incluso podría ser una especie de madrina estética para ella.
