THE FOUNDRY Brisbane’s music scene is getting a bit of a kick up the pants with the unveiling of our city’s newest music venue and artist space, The Foundry. We caught up with Venue Manager Corey Herekiuha (who also plays in Velociraptor) and Building Manager Brett Gibson to get the lowdown. What made you want to be part of starting up a new venue? Brett Gibson: I was involved in the opening and setup of
The Triffid and loved the culture that was created there and the people I worked with. I was constantly surrounded by creative people who were passionate about being the best at what they do, it inspired me to try and recreate a similar culture on a smaller scale with The Foundry. Was it immediately apparent the old backpackers would work as a new venue? BG: Not exactly, but when the idea was tossed around we knew exactly where the stage would be, exactly
BG: Yes, that’s really the main focus for us. There were two things that we thought needed to happen to make this a success. 1) Engage the community and try to help the creative industries out, and 2) make it a great experience for the bands. Was there a hole you were looking to f ill in the live scene with this venue? BG: We didn’t think there was a hole, but definitely enough great live music around so that we could co-exist. What’s your view of the Brisbane live scene currently? Corey Herekiuha: I feel it’s still going strong with local bands on every scale playing regularly and we have some of the best venues around like Brightside,
The Triffid, The Bearded Lady, Alhambra Lounge and now The Foundry to name a few. What plans do you have for the venue in the near future? CH: The way I see it is we just want to have a good venue that will host all types of talent including bands, solo artists, producers etc with a wide range of drink to cater for everyone’s taste. We all have some pretty good ideas so I see a bright future ahead. What’s happening for the off icial opening night? CH: We have a great night planned, with three bands playing, including locals White Lodge, Spod from Sydney and one of my own bands, Velociraptor. How will you go juggling working at the venue and playing at the same time? CH: It’s always been fun trying to do both but somehow I manage to. I always find it hard to let go of work when I’m away – usually a few beers help with that.
