Freshen up your home with our handy tips and tricks

HOW TO... create a vertical garden You don’t need a sprawling garden to establish an outdoor haven – vertical gardening is a useful way to add greenery to a petite patio, as well as encouraging wildlife. Follow our tips to build your own vertical garden…

• Reuse old pallets to create a planter. Firstly, make sure the pallet is safe to use by sanding it down and removing any protruding nails. Then, treat it with wood paint, varnish or a sealant. Depending on the style of pallet, you can hang pots off the slats on the flat side. Or, if you’re handy at DIY, you can take the wooden planks off a pallet and attach them to another pallet to create horizontal shelves.

• You can also use drainpipes to create spacesaving planters – half round gutters and brackets are available in most DIY and hardware shops. Simply drill a few holes in the bottom of the guttering for drainage, then attach it to a wall with brackets. Fill with compost, then add a selection of plants (ideally ones with shallow roots, such as herbs). If you hang the gutters above one another, when you water them, it will trickle to the plants below.

Buy it once You don’t need an expensive oven to bake perfect, cripsybased pizzas at home – the secret to achieving a crunchy crust is to cook your pizza on a baking stone. Simply preheat the block in your oven, then slide the pizza on top of it. Ooni baking stone, priced at £24.99, from uk.ooni.com.

• Buy drainpipe pot holders to attach small,

• To squeeze more potted plants into your outdoor space than you would be able to if you only relied on ground space, display them on the rungs of a wooden ladder.

‘Our Wren designer created a dream kitchen that gives us a pinch-me moment every day’ Wren’s exquisite range of kitchens and its designer’s creative vision provided Katie and Kalen with a beautiful room that they can’t quite believe is theirs… Bold choices: Katie had always dreamed of a black kitchen with walnut worktops

W

hen Katie Wood and her boyfriend Kalen found their new home in 2021, they fell in love with it, even though the house hadn’t been updated since the 1980s. So the couple geared themselves up for a full renovation, paying particular attention to the kitchen-diner which, says Katie, ‘was very old and desperately needed some life injecting into it’. Despite having never done a renovation before, Katie immediately saw how to transform the tired room into a more vibrant space. Her solution was to remove a wall to create a brighter, more welcoming room to entertain and relax in.

Katie and Kalen wanted a kitchen that was functional and stylish, but conducive to creating a relaxed atmosphere. ‘I’ve always felt that the kitchen is the heart of the home,’ explains Katie, ‘so it was really important for me to get it right.’ They needed help envisioning it, though, so Katie sought out the guidance of a designer to help them choose a style and colours, as well as ensure that their ideas were realistic. The quality of the units was another important factor for Katie and Kalen and they found what they were looking for with Wren. The couple also felt they were

To visualise their kitchen the couple used Wren’s VR experience during their first visit to the Wren showroom. ‘To see your design go from a drawing on a computer screen to something you can walk around with cupboard

He also used any spare gaps and spaces to slot in more units to maximise on storage.’ The couple’s friends and family may have needed a little convincing regarding the black and walnut design for the kitchen, but Katie and Kalen never had any doubts and they absolutely love it. ‘It has been installed for over six months now and I still stand back and admire it. It’s a stylish space where guests can come and join Katie and Kalen – along with their latest addition: rescue puppy, Rae – for evening drinks. ‘The space can be transformed from day to night by using the white spotlights hanging over the bar,’ explains Katie. ‘They’re practical as task lighting for cooking, but the warm bulbs also help to create an extremely cosy vibe and the perfect atmosphere for entertaining, hosting date nights and unwinding at the end of the day. The kitchen means everything to us,’ she continues, ‘and it is the room in the house that we’re most proud of. We couldn’t be happier!’

Only water when your plants really need a drink

Get green-fingered on a budget with our tips for getting your garden blooming without spending a lot

Grow your garden

for less

The cost of tending our green spaces can certainly add up – a Statista survey revealed that people in the UK with a garden spend an average of £670 per person on it annually. But it doesn’t have to be so pricey. We’ve dug up the best tips for making your garden gorgeous on a budget.

Save on seeds. Many plants have seeds you can harvest, instead of buying them from shops. If you’re looking for new plants to add to a green space, try organising a seed swap with family, friends and neighbours. Just make sure all your seeds come from healthy plants. Most seeds will also need to be stored somewhere cool, dark and dry until you can plant them. Make water savings. There are plenty of ways to save money – and water – when giving your plants a drink. Use water butts to collect rainwater, and use grey water from baths and washing up. Also think about how often you need to water, as many plants will be happy with a soak every 10 days or so. FOCUS ON starting a small business Turn your passion into profit and start making money from your hobby with these tips…

HOW TO... set up a business If you’re passionate about one of your hobbies, why not turn it into a business? It could be craft-making, art, clothes-mending or any creative activity – anything you already invest time, money and energy into could bring in extra money.

• The first thing to do is some informal market research with family and friends to see if your idea is something they would pay for. Then search online to see who else is doing it and how. The best ideas will fill a gap in the market so think about your skills, experience and anything unique that you can offer.

Frequently asked questions.. There are plenty of things you can do that don’t require you to make an investment. How about a dog-walking service, which you could advertise on your local Facebook page and with flyers in shops? You could repair clothes if you’re a dab hand with a sewing machine. Think about the skills you already have that won’t cost you anything to put into action.

NURSERY MAKEOVER

‘We created a cute and cosy nursery in two weeks’ When Rianna Simmonds and husband, Daniel, got the keys to their new home, they only had a couple of weeks to get the nursery ready for their son’s arrival

R

ianna and her husband, Daniel, had succeeded in securing their ideal family home, a two-bedroom property in Birmingham, built in the 1930s. But although the searching, viewing, making offers and paperwork were all taken care of, the property wasn’t ready for the impending arrival of their first born, who was due to arrive just two weeks after they got the keys. Unsurprisingly, the couple’s priority was to get the nursery ready to welcome baby Monroe – the rest of the house could wait until Rianna wasn’t in the final stages of pregnancy.

BEFORE

THE PROJECT

STEP INSIDE.. WHO LIVES HERE? Rianna Simmonds, 26, a graphic designer. I live with my husband, Daniel, 25, and our son, Monroe, 11 months. We moved into our 1930s property in Birmingham in August 2021, and I share my home décor progress @rii_designed.

Luckily, Rianna already knew exactly how she wanted the nursery to look. ‘I had my heart set on all the décor pieces and furnishings, the room’s colour scheme and the whole Scandi-inspired, natural aesthetic long before we moved in,’ she says. ‘I had dreamed about

WHAT WAS UPDATED? The bedroom was a little worse for wear – outdated, unloved and unsuitable for a baby. So, the whole room got a refresh. WHY THE CHANGE? We needed a nursery for our soon-to-arrive son and the décor wasn’t up to scratch. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? It took a speedy two weeks to turn the nursery around, but it wasn’t quite ready for Monroe’s arrival. He was five days old when we finished.

not just nice-looking, and I always say: “A room should evoke feeling and create a conversation.” Every time I thought about textures and colours, I thought about how it would make Monroe feel when he’s in here.’

WHAT WE DID The couple refreshed the walls with a coat of pastel paint and had Rianna’s talented twin sister paint a gorgeous, botanical mural in the corner. It makes the space feel youthful and playful – just the vibe Rianna wanted to harness for Monroe’s room. ‘I love a natural colour palette – greens, browns and creams with hints of daring yellow and oranges – so I wanted to incorporate pieces that would fit the colour scheme and the Scandinavian look,’ Rianna says. ‘I wanted a space that was inspired,

While the nursery wasn’t in need of anything more than cosmetic work, there were significant delays in revamping it due to the state the room was in when Rianna and Daniel purchased the property. ‘We had major issues with the painting, as the walls were left in a terrible state and kept chipping,’ says Rianna. ‘It took days of sanding down and priming the walls before we could even paint the room, which really slowed our progress and delayed finishing the project.’ With the paint issue rectified, though, the rest of the renovation came together without

‘My favourite feature is the most inexpensive and personal: a stunning mural painted by my twin sister of tall grass and plants with bees in between them,’ says Rianna. ‘It really brought the fun, Scandi vision to life, as I wanted the nursery to feel like you were outside’

START SIMPLE A Scandi look is great for nurseries, as you can easily add any colour or pattern to it as your little one grows. Build the scheme around neutral basics, like white and wood furniture and cream carpet.

any further hitches. Having a mental list of the furniture and accessories she wanted prior to starting the work paid off, as Rianna was able to pull most of the scheme together before Monroe arrived – he was just five days old by the time it was fully finished.

THE FINAL DETAILS Rianna chose the neutral and green scheme for the nursery so that it would work with the interior décor in the rest of the house. She was determined to make the scheme more childfriendly, however, so she added lots of vibrant, colourful accessories. ‘This was the only room

where we wanted accent colours for cushions, toys, art and décor, so we went with oranges and yellows as complementary pops of brightness,’ she says. Although Rianna loves a neutral, sophisticated style for her interiors, she made sure Monroe’s room was designed with him in mind. ‘There are so many nurseries out there that look grown-up and simple because people want to fit the aesthetic of their home. But, ultimately, it’s still a nursery, so my advice is to find unique ideas such as inventive light shades, clothes racks or rugs that make the space fun and playful.’

CHILD’S ROOM MAKEOVER

‘Rosie loves her colourful bedroom – and so do I!’ Heather Craig’s daughter Rosie asked for a rainbow bedroom, so Heather mixed pinks, yellows and greens to create a scheme that shows off her love of bold shades

H

eather Craig grew up in Dunfermline and had always hoped she might move back there with her husband, Brian, and their children, Rosie and Olive. Although not especially unhappy in their previous home, this traditional house in Heather’s hometown appealed to her, and Brian was pleased it had already been extended. The interior wasn’t adventurous enough for Heather’s love of colour, though, so the couple made plans to decorate.

BEFORE

STEP INSIDE.. WHO LIVES HERE? I’m Heather Craig (@heatherrosieolivehome), 35, an assistant in early years learning, and I live here with my husband, Brian, 41, an oil rig operations manager, and our daughters, Rosie, six, and Olive, four. We bought our four-bedroom 1940s house in Dunfermline in September 2017. WHAT WAS UPDATED? Rosie’s bedroom, which had a dark navy carpet and was painted a stark white that felt cold and uninviting. WHY THE CHANGE? Rosie turned three, so it was time she had her first, proper big-girl’s bedroom. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? About a month. Brian works offshore every two weeks, so we had limited time to decorate. Plus, I didn’t want to rush painting the scallop pattern. TOTAL COST

The task turned into a bigger job than expected, however, particularly in Rosie’s room. It turned out that the existing décor was hiding a problem. ‘After we moved in, we realised there was more work needed than we’d anticipated. The walls were rough and there was Artex on the ceilings,’ says Heather. ‘Although Rosie’s bedroom was freshly painted, when the walls began to discolour, we realised it had been done to cover up a damp problem.’

a painted wall design onto furniture as well – the wardrobe wasn’t in great condition, so Brian suggested we paint scallops on it, like the walls. It’s protected with Polyvine Decorators Varnish in matt.

THINK AHEAD For long-lasting

DIY details can be found in every corner: Heather crocheted the blanket following a YouTube tutorial and customised IKEA’s Kallax shelf. ‘At £35, it’s such a bargain,’ she says. ‘I made mine look different with yellow hairpin legs and a yellow box to fit in with my scheme’

style, find rugs you can stick in the wash, and choose wall shades with longevity. If Rosie decides to move away from bright accessories when she’s older, the pink walls will still work.

BALANCE OUT BRIGHTS I like combining three colours that I can repeat in the room, but they need to be balanced. Pink is the base, yellow is the accent, and I also added splashes of green.

The eclectic patterns and colours of the 1960s and ’70s inspire Heather’s schemes. ‘Rosie’s bedroom is a modern version of this,’ she says. ‘I love the floral print of the vintage St Michael duvet cover – the pattern reminds me of my gran’s house’

Heather knew Rosie wanted a colourful bedroom, so used the time spent sorting out the damp issue to think about how she was going to decorate and furnish the room in Rosie’s favoured bright palette.

THE PROJECT Heather’s first ideas combined blush pink and pale grey, but she soon realised these weren’t right for Rosie’s room. ‘I’ve always loved pink – I wear a lot of it and my childhood bedroom was pink,’ she says. ‘But when I painted samples on the walls, the colours looked too soft, sophisticated and washed out in the west-facing room, which doesn’t get a lot of light until the afternoon.’ So, Heather asked Rosie for ideas. ‘She likes unicorns, pink and bright colours, but when I asked her which she preferred she said she wanted all of them! So, I followed a rainbow theme and got as many colours

into her room as possible without making it look too busy.’

WHAT WE DID Heather turned to Instagram for inspiration, and set-up an account of her own (@heatherrosieolivehome) to share her progress, too. She followed #girlsroominspo for colour ideas, and settled on three that work together: Farrow & Ball’s Nancy’s Blushes, a rosy pink; Citron, a warm yellow; and Arsenic, a lively green shade. ‘Rosie wanted a cheerful, colourful room, and I really wanted the scallops around the walls,’ says Heather. ‘I was inspired after seeing them on @the.hectic.eclectic and @jayne.s.davies and decided to have a go myself.’

HIGHS & LOWS Before Heather and Brian could begin decorating, though, they had to deal with the

ROOM PLAN ‘The floral pink vintage curtains are such good quality and an eBay bargain for £15. Plus they match the duvet cover,’ says Heather. ‘Painting the radiator was really messy, though. Next time I’d use a spray paint gun’

Heather found the drawers (£45) and the wardrobe (£50) on Facebook Marketplace – she couldn’t believe her luck when she saw the scallop shape across the top. ‘I really like the look of painted furniture next to the original wood,’ she says

damp problem. They discovered that shallow, cast-iron gutters outside had become filled with debris, which was causing rainwater to pour straight down the wall. After clearing out the gutters, they had the walls and ceiling replastered ready to decorate. Heather is pleased she decided to paint the scallops on every wall in Rosie’s bedroom, as she initially intended to paint just one. ‘I was glad I found Farrow & Ball’s Nancy’s Blushes, as it’s a much warmer pink than my first choice and I couldn’t wait to use it to paint the scallops,’ she explains. ‘I thought I’d only do one wall, but continuing the pattern around

the whole room looks really effective and was worth the effort.’

THE FINAL DETAILS To dial up the colour further, Heather added brights and patterns with green painted doors, a yellow bed, a painted yellow radiator, and floral bed linen and curtains. Bunting, artwork and rugs bring the rainbow effect together. ‘Rosie loves the pink walls and was delighted with her yellow bed,’ says Heather. ‘Every time I go in her room, I’m pleased with the scallops. Even if she decides to change the room in years to come, I’d love it if she keeps the pattern.’

TEEN’S ROOM MAKEOVER

‘This revamp was a mumand-daughter project’ By creating a moodboard, 13-year-old Nimmi convinced her mum, Asa Vaid, that her baby pink bedroom needed a fresh, new look to reflect her teenage style

N

immi had wanted to redecorate her bedroom for a while, but it wasn’t the top priority for her mum, Asa. ‘We had concentrated on the rest of the house for the last year,’ says Asa, ‘but it was only after Nimmi began to take a real interest in decorating that we started to think about her room, too.’

BEFORE

Nimmi finally got to put her own stamp on her bedroom with a splash of green – her favourite colour – for a relaxing yet fun space where she can hang out with her friends

STEP INSIDE.. WHO LIVES HERE? Asa Vaid, 50, my husband, Saj, 52, and our children, Nimmi, 13, Tulsi, 20, and Arun, 23. We live in a five-bedroom house located in South Woodford, East London. WHAT WAS UPDATED? The wooden floor got a couple of coats of white paint; some new floral green wallpaper went up on one wall; and we got a larger bed, too. WHY THE CHANGE? The room hadn’t been updated since Nimmi was a baby and she wanted to incorporate her favourite colour, green. Nimmi was keen to put her own stamp on it. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? The decorating only took a week, but then we moved furniture around to make it feel cosier than its previous layout. TOTAL COST

After creating her own moodboard, Nimmi finally persuaded her mum that the time had come to give her bedroom a new look. It hadn’t been properly updated since she was a baby and she wanted something that reflected her tastes. ‘I knew it was time to change the pink walls, as Nimmi was growing up,’ recalls Asa. ‘She was getting embarrassed hanging

TEEN’S ROOM MAKEOVER

THE PROJECT The first priority was getting rid of the pink walls, so, after seeing Nimmi’s moodboard, Asa ordered lots of wallpaper samples in soft green hues – Nimmi’s favourite colour. The dark wooden floor also made the room feel gloomy, but rather than install new flooring, they decided to paint it, to make a big impact on the space while keeping costs down. ‘I know it’s quite brave having a white painted floor, especially in a child’s bedroom,’ says Asa, ‘but it’s actually very wipeable and easy to brighten up with another coat of paint when it starts getting grubby.’

WHAT WE DID With the floor painted, Nimmi couldn’t believe how much brighter the room suddenly looked. Next on Nimmi’s list was a bigger bed

DIY ideas

and Asa found one that worked in the petite room. ‘The room isn’t huge, so I didn’t want to overwhelm it with a big bed, so we settled on a small double that suits the space much better,’ she explains. After looking at lots of wallpaper samples, Massingberd Blossom by Little Greene was the firm favourite with both Asa and Nimmi. They papered the chimney breast and then gave the remaining walls a lick of paint in a soft clay hue to reflect light around the room. Asa also ordered a cover from Wayfair to hide the old radiator, rather than spend on replacing it, and to give Nimmi a handy shelf to keep accessories.

HIGHS & LOWS ‘Nimmi had to share with her sister while the work was being done, so it was handy that the decorating only took one week!’ says Asa. The mother-and-daughter team has proven how a few simple changes can completely transform the way a room feels. ‘The pink walls were

Give a teenager’s room a glow-up with a few simple changes, just like Asa and Nimmi

2. 3.

Use an expensive wallpaper on one key wall, or even just the chimney breast – you’ll get the same visual impact without the price tag. If you have a wooden floor, just painting it in a lighter colour can make a room feel much brighter. Plus, you can paint over any wear and tear. Rather than replace an old radiator, get an attractive cover to hide it. This solution will give you an extra surface for displaying accessories, too.

A large mirror, which Nimmi moved in here from the landing, a string of fairy lights and a new comfy chair from La Redoute have made this corner a favourite chill-out spot for Nimmi

out there with her friends.’ Luckily, only decorating work was needed to get the room more to Nimmi’s liking.

TEEN’S ROOM MAKEOVER By choosing a small double bed with storage underneath, Asa and Nimmi managed to fit in all the elements Nimmi wanted without compromising on style

ROOM PLAN

Asa piled on the textures with throws, pom poms and tassels to make the revamped space as comfy as possible

3.5M

The walls are painted in a soft clay shade to maximise the natural light. Asa also added lots of lighting options, with task and accent lamps for both studying and relaxing

quite oppressive and changing the colour scheme has really made a huge difference,’ says Asa. ‘The botanical wallpaper has given the room a striking focal point and a splash of colour and pattern, too.’ Asa also removed a large desk from the room that was making the space feel overcrowded, and moved furniture around to make it feel much more spacious. Nimmi had the idea of bringing in a large mirror from the landing. She leaned it against the wall,

All that was left for the pair to do was make it cosy with textiles. Asa added a striped roman blind at the window from Blinds Direct. ‘It came quite quickly and I’m really impressed with the quality,’ she says. The old lace curtains were used to hide the clothes rail in the alcove. ‘We hadn’t got around to getting a free-standing wardrobe and I didn’t want a fitted one. The lace curtains create a pretty covering and it’s really easy to draw open and closed,’ Asa explains. Most importantly, the new-look room has her daughter’s seal of approval. ‘It’s so cosy in here and now I’m so happy to hang out here with my friends,’ Nimmi says.

SUSTAINABLE

style Recycle, repurpose and rethink your purchases to give your home a new look that’s kinder to the planet

F

rom buying loose vegetables to updating your wardrobe with charity shop finds, we’re all taking steps to reduce our impact on the environment. And you can apply these principles to your decorating efforts too, by seeking out recycled materials; looking for plastic-free products; and repurposing what you already own. Alysha Alli, Interior Designer at Redrow has this advice: ‘If the last few years have taught us anything, it’s to make the most of what we have. Create a scheme where the essential elements – kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and paint colours – will still look great in five or 10 years. The key is styling with accessories, which can be upgraded and recycled as your taste changes.’

MAKE DO AND MEND

2

Breathe new life and purpose into dated, discoloured or damaged furniture for a budgetfriendly update. Treat the item to some TLC: sand and revarnish time-worn wood; brighten dining chairs or units with paint; or refresh a set of drawers with glossy handles. Use up tester paint pots for a makeover that matches your walls and reduces paint waste.

Instead of buying new, transform faded bed linen or cushion covers with fabric dye for a pocket- and planet-friendly update. Recolour your discoloured white towels a pretty blush pink to bring them back to life. ‘Cotton, linen and viscose provide the best results when dyed with a recyclable pod, which can dye up to 600g of fabric. Add vibrancy with Navy Blue and Tulip Red, or welcome warmth to a neutral scheme with Espresso Brown,’ advises Nasim Bagherian, Colour Expert at DYLON Dyes. If your kitchen splashback or bathroom wall tiles have seen better days, save yourself the bother of removing them, repairing the walls and choosing new tiles by painting them in a fresh new shade. Give the ceramic tiles a thorough clean and scrub with sugar soap to remove any grease then slightly roughen up the surface with sandpaper to provide a key for the paint to stick to. Frenchic’s Al Fresco range is well-suited to this as it doesn’t need priming and has minimal harmful VOCs, too. If you’ve got room in your budget to buy new tiles, opt for a more eco-friendly option, such as those in the Yuri range from Walls and Floors, which are made from 90-per-cent recycled materials. TAKE A SUSTAINABLE SEAT

Seek out recycled or repurposed materials when buying new. Take it one step further by checking the product can be recycled once you’re finished with it for a truly cyclical purchase. Packed with eco-friendly credentials, including using 85-percent recycled materials and sustainably sourced wood, Habbio’s sofas come in range of fabric shades that are free from stain treatments and noxious adhesives. BATHROOM PROBLEM ROOM

INSIDER INFO THE HOMEOWNER I’m Sylwia Jacob, 42, and I’m a Communications Manager for a tile company, originalstyle.com. I live with my husband, Ben, 46, an author and academic, our daughter, Nela, 16, and son, Nathaniel, three.

THE HOUSE A fourbedroom Victorian semi in Crediton, Devon. We moved here in March 2021.

THE PROBLEM We wanted to future-proof our home for when our son, Nathaniel, is older by adding an extra shower room in between our bedroom and his.

THE SOLUTION We decided to transform a cupboard in between Nathaniel and our bedrooms into a shower room, as well as taking some space from the corridor to give us a larger room. We also added a roof light.

‘We turned a cupboard into a Scandi-inspired shower room’ By transforming an unused cupboard into a stylish extra bathroom between two bedrooms, Sylwia Jacob future-proofed her Victorian home for her growing family

L

eaving the bustle of the city of Exeter and moving to the Devon countryside was a major change for Sylwia and Ben Jacob, but one they were thrilled to make. ‘We bought a Victorian house with a big garden that needed tons of work, but we knew it was the right thing for us. Ben has a real interest in plants and is writing a book on British orchids, so we’ve now got all sorts of vegetation propagating.’ When it came to the house, the couple decided to focus on renovating the existing bathroom and creating an en suite out of a large airing cupboard. ‘We were desperate for a shower room for us. Our bedroom is next to our son, Nathaniel’s, and the cupboard was in between. We saw we could create a shower room by taking a bit of the corridor and adding a rooflight, so it wasn’t just a dark cubby hole. Nathaniel’s bedroom is a good size and although he’s only three we wanted to future-proof the house for when he’s older as we won’t be moving anytime soon, if ever.’

Before SLEEK STORAGE A compact bathroom needs savvy storage and Sylwia found a stylish solution in this twotiered caddy, which fits neatly into the corner of the shower

54

yourhomestyle.uk

SCANDI SIMPLICITY Sylwia combined sharp lines, floor-to-ceiling tiles and navy accents for a contemporary scheme that’s practical, too

WINDOW SHOPPING Sylwia added a rooflight window, which works with the awkward sloped ceiling, to bring muchneeded natural light into the space

MATCHING MATT A contemporary mono mixer in a matt black finish complements the grey veining in the marble-effect tiles

PLANT LIFE Sylwia and Ben both love plants, so found types that will thrive in a small bathroom, as well as a few artificial ones, so the space has plenty of greenery

BOLT OF BLUE Add art to make a bathroom feel more homely. Sylwia chose a pair of prints that tie in with the navy blue sink and toilet unit

They had planned to work on the en suite and bathroom at the same time after finding builders they were happy with, but the project was hampered by the Covid-19 lockdowns and delivery delays. ‘Given the problems, we decided to focus on the en suite so we would have a working shower for when we came to do the big bathroom,’ says Sylwia. ‘Ben did some of the preparation work himself, which made sense as we were working from home and we couldn’t go out anyway. But he had to carefully remove all the lath and plaster, and take the walls right back. It took a month just to do that.’ Things were complicated further when their plumber caught Covid-19 and had to halt work while he recovered, but it gave Sylwia a chance to find some lovely fixtures and get everything exactly as she wanted it. ‘I wanted a simple Scandi vibe, so I broke down the elements,’ she says. ‘I looked for sharp black framing and taps rather than chrome, and I went for marble-effect tiles with veining that tied in. But I didn’t want to make the whole scheme monochrome, so I added in navy blue with the units and toilet surround. Plus there are wood-effect planks on the floor to add warmth. Even though the renovation of both bathrooms ended up taking five months, it was worth it. We rush to the shower in the mornings.’

GET READY FOR BED From the mattress to your pillow, your bed plays a major role in how comfortable you feel during the night. Alison Jones, sleep expert at mattress brand, Sealy, has this advice: ‘Mattresses made from thick foam tend to absorb and trap body heat, causing you to feel hotter. Look out for mattresses with Geltex, which is a cooling material. Choose lightweight, plant-based materials for your bedding such as cotton, linen and rayon from bamboo to help your skin breathe.’

Keep the Sun’s heat at bay by drawing your curtains and keeping blinds closed during the day. As night falls, open the windows and doors to encourage air flow around your room. ‘The optimal temperature to avoid difficulties falling and staying asleep is 16-18°C. If your roof space has a hatch, leave this open to allow any hot air to rise out of your home,’ say Emily and Jonathan Attwood, Founders of bedding company, scooms. If you’re using a fan, close the windows to maximise its cool breeze and remember to turn off other electrical devices to limit the heat.

RELAX THE SENSES Make it easier to drift off to sleep with a soothing routine, keep distractions at bay and enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy. Wind down with a calming activity – preferably not using a device with a screen, as blue light affects your sleep – then cool the pulse points on your neck and wrists with a cold flannel. Add a few drops of essential oils such as lavender or rosemary to your pillow and inhale their relaxing properties for the sweetest of dreams.

SHOPPING LIST

When picking pieces of raffia to wrap with, stick to wider, flatter strands – they’ll cover more evenly and get quicker results

Take a strand of raffia and use a dab of hot glue to stick one end down to the start of your jug’s handle. Once secure, wrap the raffia around the handle until the strand runs out. Glue the other end down, then repeat to add more strands, until the handle is completely covered. Take three more strands of raffia and tie each one around your jug – one at the bottom, one around 4cm up from the first, and another around 4cm above the second. Use a few dabs of hot glue underneath each tie to secure them in place. Take a new strand of raffia from the bunch and fold it in half. Secure this strand to the uppermost tie on the jug, knotting them together at the fold. Bring the two halves of the strand down to the next tie in a triangular shape, then knot each half into position. Finally, bring the strands back together again at the bottom tie and knot to secure them in place. Repeat with several more strands, to cover your jug in a geometric pattern.

Projects and step photos Sophie Tarrant Main photo Dave Caudery Styling Tricia Ball & Beth Charlton Lucas

Begin by laying your raffia out flat. Take a bunch of strands, around 1cm thick when pinched together, then pick out a separate strand (see Top Tip, below) and wrap it tightly around the bunch. Once you’ve wrapped around 4cm of the bunch, trim the end of the bundle, then turn the bound section back on itself to start a loop. Wrap the loop several times to hold it together, then thread your wrapping strand onto a tapestry needle. Coil the newly wrapped length around the loop you created, then insert the needle through the middle of the loop from back to front. Pull the strand taut, then continue to wrap as before. Continue to wrap and coil to create the your placemat. Once you get within about 15cm of the end of your bundle, take another 1cm bunch and hold it together with the end of the first (temporarily tying them together as you transition may help). Carry on, until your wrapped placemat is around 25cm in diameter. To finish your wrap, trim the end of your raffia bundle and hold it flat against the placemat. Use your needle to work several securing stitches until it is completely enclosed. Knot small lengths of raffia all around the edge of the placemat, threading them through the outer coil before securing.

1

1

Each napkin ring uses one half of a toilet roll tube as a base, so begin by cutting your tubes in half or to 7.75cm in length to make the required number of bases. Unfold a bunch of raffia and lay it out. Pick a fairly flat strand from the bunch, then glue one end of it inside your first cardboard tube using a hot glue gun. Wrap the strand around the tube, then stick the opposite end down to secure it. Add more strands in the same way until the tube is completely covered. Repeat to cover each of your tubes in raffia. Take nine strands of raffia and tie them together at one end. Separate the strands into three groups of three, then plait them together. Once your plait is around 5cm longer than the circumference of your napkin ring, stop braiding and trim. Wrap the plait around the napkin and tie together with a new strand of raffia. Trim the tails of the braid down to around 3cm each, then fluff them up.

REVAMP REPAIR recycle

Treat your feathered friends to a touch of luxury with a tiered bird bath made out of old terracotta pots and saucers, and decorate it with mosaic

C

reate a striking focal point for your garden by building tiers of bathing pools for visiting birds to enjoy. Dust off your disused terracotta pots and saucers, check for cracks in the surface and give them a new purpose with this weekend project. We’ve used a mixture of blue tones to create a cool watery look, but with mosaic tiles and glass nuggets available in a rainbow of options you can easily co-ordinate your design with any garden colour scheme.

SHOPPING LIST

✔ Unglazed terracotta pots: 2 x 17cm diameter, 1 x 10cm, 1 x 9cm ✔ Unglazed terracotta saucers: 1 x 31cm, 1 x 21cm, 1 x 15cm ✔ Pencil ✔ 10mm and 20mm mosaic tiles ✔ Glass nuggets ✔ Paintbrush ✔ PVA glue ✔ Waterproof tile adhesive ✔ Rubber gloves ✔ Flexible knife or small plastic spatula ✔ Plastic fork ✔ Waterproof ceramic glue ✔ Masking tape ✔ Waterproof tile grout ✔ Plastic pots for mixing ✔ Sponge cloth ✔ Wooden toothpick ✔ Paper towels

5

If you’re repurposing old pots, give them a thorough clean. Place each saucer upside down with its supporting pot on top, check that the pots are centred and draw around them to create guidelines for gluing them together later. With the saucers the right way up, position the 9cm pot in the centre of the 21cm saucer and draw around the base to create a guideline for the mosaic. Repeat with the 10cm pot and 31cm saucer. Position the tiles and glass nuggets on the saucers to work out your designs, leaving a small gap between them for the grout. When you’re happy with the designs, take a photo of them. Remove the tiles and prepare the saucers by brushing a 50/50 mix of PVA and water around the inside, then allow them to dry. Mix the tile adhesive as per the instructions. Wearing gloves, use the flexible knife to apply a 3mm layer of adhesive to a saucer; for the larger two, avoid the central circle where the pot for the next tier will sit. Use the plastic fork to make ridges in the adhesive and then press your tiles and nuggets firmly into it, using your photo for reference (you’ll be able to adjust the tile spacing for about 20 minutes). Repeat for each of the saucers and allow the adhesive to set.

3

Use ceramic glue to attach the 10cm pot in the centre of the 31cm saucer, then attach the 9cm pot in the centre of the 21cm saucer. Once dry, apply masking tape around the base of the pots to keep them clean during grouting. Turn one of the 17cm pots upside down. Apply glue to its base, then attach the base of the other 17cm pot to it, to form the birdbath’s stand. Mix the tile grout as per the instructions and apply it with the flexible knife. Wearing gloves, push the tile grout firmly into the gaps between the tiles. It will look messy at this stage. Wipe off any excess grout with a barely damp sponge cloth, rinsing and squeezing it out between wipes. Allow the grout to dry fully and then polish away any remaining residue on the tiles with a paper towel. Grout can also be removed by scraping it off with a toothpick. Apply glue around the rim of the birdbath stand and sit the 31cm saucer on top of it, making sure it’s centred. Apply glue around the rim of the 10cm pot and sit the 21cm saucer on top. Finally, apply glue around the rim of the 9cm pot and sit the 15cm saucer on top. Once completely dry, position it in your garden, then add water to each of the pools.

SEW simple Dive into this quilted shell cushion project made in plush velvet to pretty up your bed or sofa

F

rom trinket dishes to statement chairs, shell shapes are all over the high street right now. Reminding us of sunny days spent collecting shells at the beach, shell motifs are a fun way to add a touch of summer to your interiors. This beginner-friendly shell cushion is a skills-boosting project that’ll bring luxe mermaid vibes to a sofa, chair or bed. Make it in plush velvet and bring out the shell outline with quilted detailing to give it a designer finish – no one will guess you made it yourself!

SHOPPING LIST

✔ Shell template download from yourhomestyle.uk ✔ Erasable fabric marker ✔ Scissors ✔ ½ metre of velvet fabric ✔ 25cm of wadding ✔ 25cm medium-weight iron-on interfacing ✔ Iron ✔ Pins ✔ Sewing machine ✔ Matching thread ✔ Soft toy filling

70

1

Download, print and cut out the shell template from yourhomestyle.uk. Print the template out at 100 per cent. The template is only half of the shell outline, so trace around it, flip it over and trace around it again to create the full shell template. Trace the stitching lines for the quilting detail as well. Using your template, cut out two pieces of velvet, adding a 1cm seam allowance all the way around the edge. Then use the template to cut a piece of wadding and interfacing to the same size as the template. Also trace the stitching lines onto the interfacing. Carefully iron the interfacing onto the wadding and place both on the wrong side (WS) of one of the velvet shell pieces, then pin the layers together. Sew along the stitching lines you traced to create the quilting detail. Place the quilted cushion front on top of the cushion back with right sides (RS) together and pin the front and back pieces together around the outside, leaving a 10cm

gap at the bottom edge for turning the cushion RS out. Sew the cushion front and back together with a 1cm seam allowance, leaving the 10cm gap at the bottom edge unsewn. Trim away any excess fabric and snip into the dip of each shell curve, being careful not to snip the stitching. Clip triangles into the outer curves, too (once again, being careful not to snip the stitching). Turn the cushion RS out through the gap and push the curves out to make sure the shape is crisp before you stuff it – use a blunt tool, like a knitting needle, to help you push out the curves without damaging the stitching. Stuff the cushion with the toy filling through the gap. Once the cushion is as packed as you want it, sew up the gap by hand using a slip stitch.

Velvet has a ‘nap’ – from top to bottom, the fabric is smoother and subtly lighter than from bottom to top. Cut both cushion pieces out the same way so the nap is the same on both sides.

Discover paper floristry with this easy peony project – once you’ve picked up a few skills, you can create colourful blooms that you’ll never need to water!

T

his simple peony is one of the easiest paper flowers to make. The project is ideal for beginners as it covers almost all of the basic flower-making techniques and if you want fluffier blooms, all you need to do is add more petals! You don’t need any special equipment, and it’s thrifty too, as you only need small pieces of paper – so keep your scraps and you can keep curling, folding and wrapping until you have an entire bouquet!

BOW TIE TECHNIQUE

1

Prepare a thin rectangular strip of unstretched crêpe paper. Make a half twist at the centre of the strip by holding it at both ends and flipping one end backwards. Cup and stretch each end of the bow tie towards you. Bend the two ends towards each other to create a rounded tip. Glue the two stretched, wider ends of the bow tie together, so that the twisted portion forms the tip of the carpel.

2 3 4

SHOPPING LIST

✔ Crêpe paper in Baby Pink #549; Yellow #576; Light Green #562; Dark Green #591 ✔ Pre-wrapped #18 wire ✔ Thick curling tool (such as a marker pen) ✔ Scissors and wire cutters ✔ Mini hot glue gun ✔ White craft glue

1

Go to yourhomestyle.uk and download and print the peony parts template (August 2022). Start by cutting 12 petals in Baby Pink crêpe paper using template Sp3. Wrap the top half of each petal around the tip of a marker pen. Curl the petal around the pen until the tip touches the middle. Gently cup each petal in your hands to create wide, concave petals. To make the stamen and carpels, cut one rectangle from the Yellow crêpe paper using template Sp1. Stretch and fringe this strip. To make the carpels, cut four rectangles in the Light Green crêpe paper using

2 3 4 5 72

yourhomestyle.uk

template Sp2 and prepare them using the bow tie technique (see box, above). Use one carpel to cover the tip of your pre-wrapped #18 wire. Apply a small dab of glue on the ends of the other three carpels and attach them around the top of the one on the wire. To make the stamen, apply hot glue at the base of the yellow fringed strip and wrap it around the carpels. Once the stamen is securely attached, use your fingers to spread out the fringe so that it forms an even circle around the carpels. To attach the petals, apply hot glue at the base of each petal and stick it to the stamen.

6 7 8

Align the bottom edge of the petal with the bottom edge of the stamen. Use three petals for the first layer. For the second layer of petals, glue four petals around the first layer, but offset them so that no petals are directly back-to-back. Attach the remaining five petals to create the final, outer layer. For the calyx, cut three to four sepals (Sp4) from stretched Dark Green crêpe paper and glue them to the base of the flower. Wrap the rest of your stalk with stretched Dark Green crêpe paper and attach two or more leaves (Sp5) along it.

Glam new-build

‘I turned a blank canvas into a home I’m proud of’ To inject much-needed personality into her new-build, Rejoice Gusha filled it with expensive-looking DIYs, luxe finishes and lashings of rich, bold colour

M

oving into a new-build home may have given Rejoice Gusha an empty shell on which she could flex her creative skills, but it certainly wasn’t without its challenges. The three-bedroom new-build house was a perfect size and in a great location close to her family, and she was keen to transform the white rooms, which felt somewhat devoid of character. But, after initially filling it with matching grey hues, Rejoice soon realised that it needed an injection of colour and individuality. ‘When I first bought the house, I saw pictures of all these grey homes and thought that was what I should have, too,’ Rejoice explains. ‘However, as soon as everything was

WE BOUGHT THIS HOUSE BECAUSE it’s in a perfect location – close to family and in a quiet area, but also not too far from the city, so we get the best of both worlds.

REAL HOME LIVING ROOM Rejoice went for a neutral backdrop in this cosy room, punctuated with pops of brown, yellow and blue from furniture and accessories. ‘It’s no longer the simple copyand-paste home you tend to get with new-builds,’ she says. ‘I’ve curated the space to make it feel cohesive, even with all the different colours’ OUR MUST HAVES Endri coffee table with storage, £309.99, Wayfair. in place, it felt really cold and uninteresting. I spent so much time Googling ‘how to make a home feel warm and welcoming’ before finally realising it was the lack of visual interest in the space. Essentially, I had to start all over again with decorating and buy items twice!’

DARE TO BE BOLD Turning her hand to painting, panelling and papering all the walls herself, Rejoice slowly started to add character, bit by bit. ‘It didn’t help that I had the typical new-build problems of walls shrinking as the home dried out, which caused a lot of cracks to appear,’ she recalls. ‘Luckily, they were quick DIY fixes.’ The downstairs toilet was the starting point for Rejoice’s makeover project, and today it’s her favourite room. ‘It was the first time I really started playing with colour and it was a great place to start, since rich colours work well in such spaces,’ she says. ‘Prior to

this, I’d accepted the common misconception that white walls make a room feel bigger. Rich blues, greens and mustards are punctuated with small accents of gold, while the wall mouldings and panelling have instantly lifted the rooms. In the bathroom, she added dark green panels on the lower half of the walls, while a bold botanical print takes pride of place above. ‘Good use of colour has kept the rooms from feeling flat,’ says Rejoice. ‘I think it’s important to take your time with decorating and get a feel for the space, rather than just hurriedly buying items to fill it.’ Her love of unique furniture shows, with the wing-shaped, button-back bed in the main bedroom a case in point. ‘I love going to

SAVVY STORAGE Turning her hand to upcycling in order to create the piece she needs isn’t off the cards for Rejoice, either. The blue sideboard in the living room, for example, was originally wooden-fronted, with black handles and legs. ‘I painted it all blue and added new gold legs and handles,’ she says. ‘It looks completely different now.’ Luckily, Rejoice has plenty of storage elsewhere, too, so she can keep every room clutter-free. ‘We are lucky to have three good-sized storage cupboards in this house, which is a great amount for a new-build,’ she says. ‘I made sure to have extra storage in the bedrooms as well, so they don’t feel crowded and have a sense of calm about them.’ The house is a far cry from the bland newbuild she first bought and Rejoice is proud of her hard work. ‘I think the journey to designing this home has been an important lesson,’ she says. ‘I’ve had many triumphs and I’ve also made mistakes along the way, but that’s all been part of the growth. Resisting the urge to buy trend-led items has proved a good lesson, and the rooms are developing into the home that I envisioned.’

Cheerful revamp

‘This house inspired me to be confident with colour’ After finding her forever home on a street she fell in love with 14 years ago, Laura Tupman swapped plain neutrals for a bolder pastel palette throughout

‘W

e’ve always lived in Pembrokeshire and love the area,’ says Laura Tupman, ‘but we’d outgrown our house so were looking for something bigger. I wanted a large entertaining space with an open-plan kitchendiner and my husband, David, wanted a garage.’ However, it turned out that their dream house wasn’t easy to find. ‘We looked at loads of properties, but they either weren’t quite right or needed too much work doing.’ The couple had driven up the road they now live on about 14 years ago and loved the houses, and Laura recalls thinking at the time that one day she’d like to live here. ‘Then, one day I spotted an estate agent’s ‘sneak peek’ on social media, revealing this house before it officially went on the market. We called the agent and they let us come and have a look.’

HOME AT FIRST SIGHT Laura says that both she and David had that ‘wow’ feeling as soon as they walked in, not only because the house had everything on their wish list, but also because, Laura says, ‘it just immediately felt like home.’

Laura and David were immediately won over by this spacious detached house, and set about transforming it into their dream home

84

yourhomestyle.uk

‘Most of the house was painted white, so it was easy to visualise what needed doing to make it feel like our home’

REAL HOME KITCHEN Laura admits that the colour of the units wouldn’t have been her first choice, but says: ‘In hindsight I’m glad, as it brought out my flair for colour which I carried throughout the rest of the house.’ There were originally chrome legs holding up the breakfast bar, but David converted it into a floating bar to allow for more sociable seating OUR MUST HAVES Infinity Plus Milano Ultra gloss kitchen units in Cloud Blue, from £3,363, Wren Kitchens. COME ON IN. . WE ARE Laura Tupman, 35, a learning support assistant, on Instagram @snap_happy_home, my husband, David, 38, an Operations Superintendent for an oil refinery, our daughter, Myla, eight, and Mally, the cat.

OUR HOME IS a four-bedroom detached house in Pembrokeshire built in 2005, and we’ve lived here since June 2020. By adding natural wood shelving and accessories, Laura has brought a country cottage feel to the existing contemporary kitchen, making her own style work with what was already there

MY BEST BARGAIN was decorating Myla’s room. The look belies the cost, as the paint was leftover from other rooms and the spots are just cheap stickers.

NEXT TO DO is herringbone flooring throughout the kitchen-diner. I love the interest it adds to a large space, and the floor here hasn’t been laid particularly well, so we are hoping we can just cover it with luxury vinyl tiles.

MY STYLE IS seamless. I want the look to flow from one room to the next, so although there seems to be quite a bit of colour, I’ve pared back my palette to just two or three shades that run throughout.

REAL HOME The fact that a lot of the hard work had already been done was a huge bonus: a new kitchen and bathroom suite had recently been installed, and the whole house had new flooring. ‘It was the perfect blank canvas,’ enthuses Laura. ‘All the expensive fixtures and fittings were new but most of the house was painted white, so it was easy to visualise what needed doing to make it feel like home.’

COSY & COMPLEMENTARY Inspired by the existing blue kitchen, Laura wanted to add pops of colour. ‘Our old home was very neutral, and I’d never really experimented with colour,’ she says, ‘but inheriting the blue kitchen made me a bit braver with my decorating choices.’ Laura admits she didn’t initially love the colour of the cabinets, but they had been recently fitted and were good quality, so she The mirror on this wall wasn’t quite working, so Laura got creative and decided to make a feature of it with colour-blocking, using leftover pink paint that links back to the kitchen

knew she had to work with them. ‘I decided to look at some colour charts and see what would suit the duck-egg blue of the units, and pink kept coming up. I wanted a colour that would complement the kitchen but, because this is such a big room, it also needed to feel cosy, so I chose Farrow & Ball’s Sulking Room Pink. David wasn’t sure and thought it would be too dark, so we tried it out with a tester pot first. I loved the earthy, warm tone the moment the paint went on.’

A SENSE OF FLOW Laura quickly moved on to refreshing the living room. ‘We’d given it a lick of white paint when we moved in, but after finishing the kitchen, the view through to the living space looked really plain. I didn’t want to mirror the pink but I wanted a sense of cohesion downstairs, so I had paint matched to the colour of the kitchen units.’ When it came to decorating upstairs, their daughter Myla’s room took priority and Myla had her own ideas on how the room should look. ‘She told me she wanted geometric walls and Dalmatian spots, so we used leftover paint from downstairs to do the colour-block walls, using the classic masking-tape method,’ recalls Laura. ‘I also bought black dotty

ashoya Aird moved out of London in 2019 after falling in love with the area around Thurrock, Essex. She purchased this flat off-plan, knowing that she could turn its modern layout into a cosy, stylish space. Its secluded location was a big upside for her, too. ‘I travelled from London to see it when parts of the development had been built and my plot was almost finished,’ she says. ‘Being

MY HOME IS a two-bedroom new-build flat in a quiet cul-de-sac in Thurrock, Essex.

MY MAIN CHALLENGE was to inject character into my flat, as often new-builds tend to lack it.

MY FIRST DIY was an easy console table – I added silver-sprayed hairpin legs from eBay to a simple floating shelf.

MY BEST FIND I could never find decorative Corylus (hazel) branches at the right height for a tall vase I have, so I searched for the perfect branch during a walk at the local park instead. It’s a longlasting way to bring the outside in with natural materials.

MY TOP TIPS Adding a few beige and blush touches was enough to give the flat a more natural, Scandi look to balance out the contemporary elements, and plants always help to add dynamism to a scheme.

SIGNATURE LOOK

This starter project sums up Tashoya’s decorating style – it’s all about texture, toned-down neutral colours and statement items. Pampas grass brings natural softness to ceramic and wooden accents, and faux fur rugs offset Tashoya’s signature plastercovered pieces with cosy texture. ‘It all started with a vase. REAL HOME some life,’ says Tashoya. ‘I popped into IKEA and I found a black glass vase and instantly thought, “I’ve got an idea”.’ Tashoya had seen projects painted with a mix of paint and baking powder before, but only had flour and paint to hand at home. She decided to give it a go anyway, and the results started a whole new creative business. ‘I mixed flour with the paint and used a sponge to layer on the texture,’ she says. ‘I thought the end result was beautiful. I then used the same kind of technique on my homemade wooden coffee table using plaster and paint. I wanted a unique piece with texture that looked like art and would blend with my neutral theme.’ The finished piece received such great feedback on Instagram and TikTok when Tashoya revealed it, that it’s become a prototype for her own made-toorder line of furniture.

WARM TOUCHES Tashoya's style changed over time, so she began updating her decór to match, using her practical skills to make changes without spending a lot. ‘Within a year, I started introducing neutrals to the grey and white interiors for added warmth,’ says Tashoya. ‘This is where my DIY skills have really come into their own in order to be able to do this A luxurious corner sofa provides sociable seating for when Tashoya's friends come over, and is piled with cushions to create a comfy spot for her to relax day to day. A pro at making the most of small rooms, she ‘can’t wait to install a well-designed storage system in there to maximise the space,’ she says, ‘and you bet I’ll be giving it the minimal aesthetic it deserves!’

peaches

This stone fruit is commonly used in baking projects, but it also contrasts well in savoury recipes and is delicious in drinks, too To make a speedy salad for four, toss 400g diced chicken breast in some olive oil. Grill on each side until cooked through, then set aside. Quarter 4 peaches and lightly brush on a little oil, then grill for 1 minute on each side. Toss a couple of handfuls of salad leaves with some salad dressing, then combine with 100g crumbled feta cheese. Serve with the grilled chicken and peaches. For peach iced tea, tip 200g granulated sugar into a saucepan with 250ml water. Bring to the boil slowly, then add 4 chopped peaches. Cook until very soft, then remove from the heat, mash the peaches with a fork and leave to infuse for 1 hour. Sieve the mixture to create a syrup. Brew 4 black teabags with 2L of boiling water for 4 minutes, then remove the teabags. Transfer to the fridge to chill. Stir the peach syrup into the iced tea with some ice and serve. For a fuss-free dessert, halve 4 peaches and lightly brush with a little oil. Grill the peaches cut-side down until grill marks form (around 4 minutes), then flip and sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Cook for another 4 minutes and serve warm, with some crème fraîche.

Charred sweet potatoes with watercress chutney YOU WILL NEED

✔ 2 medium-sized sweet potatoes, sliced in half lengthways ✔ 2 tsp olive oil ✔ ½ tsp salt ✔ ½ tsp cracked black pepper ✔ crème fraîche and chilli flakes, to serve For the beer caramelised onions

✔ 6 onions, finely sliced (use a mandolin for this, if you have one) ✔ 50g unsalted butter ✔ 200ml lager For the watercress chutney ✔ 50g watercress ✔ 50g coriander ✔ 1 shallot, diced ✔ 1 tsp sugar ✔ 4 tbsp cider vinegar ✔ 2 tbsp olive oil ✔ ½ tsp salt

DIRECTIONS ■ Preheat the barbecue and make sure to bank the coals at one side. Score slashes in the cut side of the potatoes and rub with the olive oil, before sprinkling with salt and pepper. ■ Lay the potatoes cut side down on the opposite side of the barbecue to the coals and cover with the barbecue lid. Allow to smoke for 1 hour before turning and cooking for 30-45 minutes more, or until completely tender and smoky. ■ Meanwhile, place the onions and butter in a large saucepan on the hob over a medium heat. Cover with a lid. Allow to cook, stirring every 5 minutes for 30-40 minutes. The

onions will release their own juices and begin to caramelise but if they start to stick, add a little of the lager. ■ Add the remaining lager and increase the heat. Allow to bubble and reduce for 20 minutes or so, until the lager has evaporated and the onions are sticky. Set aside. ■ To make the chutney, blitz all the ingredients in a food processor. ■ Serve the potatoes, piling on the sticky onions, a drizzle of chutney, crème fraîche and chilli flakes. Add caster sugar 1 tbsp at a time until the appearance is glossy and smooth. ■ Whisk in the vinegar, cornflour and vanilla extract. Divide the mixture between the three baking paper templates, keeping within the templates. Spread the mixture out using a palette knife to create a dip in the centre. Keep the sides slightly higher than the middle. Transfer onto a tray and bake in the oven for 1 hour. ■ Turn off the heat and allow the meringue layers to completely cool while in the oven. ■ Once the meringue layers have thoroughly cooled, whisk together the cream and maple syrup in a bowl to form soft peaks. DIRECTIONS

PREPARATION TIME 30 minutes COOKING TIME 7-8 miutes SERVES 8

■ Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6. Grease and line a 32.5 x 22.5cm tin with non-stick baking parchment. ■ Whisk the eggs and sugar together in a mixing bowl for 3-4 minutes until the mixture thickens to a mousse-like consistency. Add the orange zest and whisk briefly to combine. ■ Sift in the flour and salt and gently fold. Transfer to the tin and level the surface. Bake for 7-8 minutes until pale golden brown. ■ Meanwhile, prepare a large piece of baking parchment and sprinkle it with caster sugar. Cool the cake in the tin for 1-2 minutes, then flip it out of the tin onto the sugar-sprinkled parchment, so that the lining paper faces upwards. Carefully peel away the lining paper, then roll up the cake from the short side (with the baking parchment rolled up in the sponge). Leave to cool. ■ Whip the cream until thick. Spoon one quarter into a piping bag fitted with a star nozzle. Fold the orange zest into the rest of the cream. Unroll the cake and spread this cream over the surface. ■ Halve 3 strawberries and cut half the peach into slices. Eton mess semifreddo YOU WILL NEED

✔ 400g fresh mixed berries, such as raspberries and strawberries, plus extra to decorate ✔ 250g icing sugar ✔ 2 lemons, juice and zest ✔ 8 large egg whites ✔ 1 litre double cream ✔ 100g meringue nests, crumbled

DIRECTIONS

PREPARATION TIME 20 minutes + 8 hours freezing COOKING TIME 5 minutes SERVES 10

Feature Thomas Poad

■ Line a 900g loaf tin with cling film and set aside. Put the berries, 100g icing sugar and lemon juice into a pan and heat gently for 5 minutes until the berries have softened and the liquid is syrupy. ■ Using a slotted spoon, remove half the berries and set aside, then blitz the remainder with a hand blender until smooth. Push the berry purée through a fine sieve into a bowl, discarding any pips. Leave the purée and reserved berries to cool. ■ Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with a hand mixer until stiff peaks form. Add the remaining icing sugar and beat again until the mixture is smooth, thick and glossy. In a separate bowl, whip the cream until it holds its shape, being careful not to overwhip. ■ Using a large metal spoon, gently fold the whisked egg whites and lemon zest into the cream, then fold in the crumbled meringue pieces. ■ Fold through the cooled berry purée and reserved softened berries. Transfer the mixture to the prepared loaf tin. Freeze the dessert for at least 8 hours before serving. To serve, turn out the semifreddo and cut into slices. Decorate with extra berries. Peach and fennel cobbler YOU WILL NEED

For the peaches ✔ 600g ripe peaches, roughly chopped ✔ 60g caster sugar ✔ 1 tsp vanilla bean paste ✔ 1 tsp ground ginger For the cobbler ✔ 1½ tsp fennel seeds ✔ 175g plain flour ✔ 30g caster sugar ✔ ¼ tsp salt ✔ 1½ tsp baking powder ✔ 75g cold unsalted butter, cubed ✔ 150ml double cream, plus extra for brushing ✔ 2 tsp demerara sugar

DIRECTIONS

PREPARATION TIME 20 minutes COOKING TIME 50 minutes SERVES 6

■ Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C Fan/Gas Mark 6. Add the peaches to a baking dish approximately 26 x 21cm in size. Mix in the sugar, vanilla and ginger, then set aside to marinate while you make the cobbler topping. ■ Coarsely grind the fennel seeds in a pestle and mortar and then set aside. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, caster sugar, salt and baking powder. Add the cubed butter and rub it into the flour until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Stir in most of the ground fennel, reserving a little to sprinkle on top of the cobbler later. ■ Make a well in the middle of the mixture, pour in the cream and use a table knife to stir until the dough clumps together. Make 6–8 rough balls of dough – you want them to be rough and scraggly, so don’t overwork them. Place the balls on top of the peaches, leaving some space between them with the peaches poking through. ■ Brush the tops with cream and sprinkle on some demerara sugar and the remaining ground fennel. ■ Bake for 45–50 minutes until the cobbler is golden and the peaches are bubbling underneath. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving warm with ice cream. Raspberry, honey and yogurt cake YOU WILL NEED

✔ 100ml sunflower or vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing ✔ 50g unsalted butter, melted ✔ 150g caster sugar ✔ 1 tsp vanilla bean paste ✔ 3 eggs ✔ 120g Greek yogurt ✔ 50g honey ✔ 230g plain flour ✔ 1½ tsp baking powder ✔ ¼ tsp salt ✔ 200g raspberries, plus extra to decorate ✔ icing sugar, for dusting For the filling ✔ 200g Greek yogurt ✔ 150ml double cream ✔ ½ tbsp honey, plus extra to decorate

DIRECTIONS ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas Mark 4. Grease and line two 15cm cake tins. In a large bowl, whisk the oil, butter, sugar and vanilla together. ■ Beat in the eggs, followed by the yogurt and honey, mixing until smooth. Add the flour, baking powder and salt to the mixture, stirring until smooth. ■ Divide the batter evenly between the cake tins. Add the raspberries on top of the mixture, pushing a few in and leaving some on the surface. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle of the cakes comes out clean. While the cakes cool, combine the yogurt, cream and honey in a mixing bowl. Whip together for 1-2 minutes until you have a smooth mixture. ■ Once the cakes have cooled, level off any domed tops with a sharp, serrated knife. Spoon the filling on one half of the cake and top with more raspberries and a drizzle of honey. Place the other cake on top, top-side down, and lightly dust with icing sugar before serving.

Remove the parchment and beans, and bake for a further 5 minutes, then set aside to cool. ■ Meanwhile, make the frangipane filling. Cream together the butter, sugar, vanilla and orange zest. Add the almonds and flour and mix in, then stir in the beaten egg. ■ Turn down the oven to 170°C/Fan 150°C/Gas Mark 3. Fill the cooled pastry case with the frangipane. Add the orange slices and flaked almonds and bake for 45-50 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from the oven and trim off the excess pastry. ■ Gently warm the marmalade in a pan or microwave until just melted, then brush over the top of the tart. HOW TO UPDATE AND REVAMP YOUR SUN-SOAKED SPACES Give a tired sun room a new lease of life with DIY updates and replacement flooring, furniture or glazing to make it a relaxing space to be in, all year round

I

f you’re lucky enough to have a sun room or conservatory, this extra living space can be used for all sorts of activities. Whether relaxing with a good book, taking up a new hobby or using it for home working, this area can be a valuable asset to your home. However, if yours is looking a bit timeworn and outdated, there are plenty of ways to spruce it up and breathe new purpose into the space. Go all-out with new windows, roof and a door or revamp the furniture and flooring to make the most of a sun-drenched room. 108

yourhomestyle.uk

FIT NEW FLOORING Swap out a cracked, damaged or draughty floor and update the look of the space with new flooring. Consider the room’s aspect and how warm the room is before you choose your material. For instance, a cool, northfacing room would benefit from durable carpeting or a well-insulated underlay to add warmth. If it’s south-facing with plenty of sunlight, choose natural stone or porcelain tiles – a practical solution to clean up muddy footprints if there’s access to the garden. For a more budgetfriendly option, consider wood- or stoneeffect LVT for the same look at a reduced price. While replacing the flooring should be an easy job for experienced DIYers, if the room is awkwardly shaped, it’s best to have it professionally fitted. Check for signs of rising damp to see if you need to include a damp-proof course.

Natalie Mann, New Product Development Executive at Iconic Lights

t says...

‘Whether you use your sun room as a space to relax or to entertain in the warmer months, there are some easy ways to give the space a seasonal refresh. Upgrade light fittings with wicker shades – the natural material adds texture and contrast while complementing the outdoors. As the evening draws in, the shade will create a warm and inviting ambience as it cleverly filters the light, casting soft shadows across the room.’

e r Ou

UPGRADE THE INSULATION Boost the room’s energy efficiency while getting the temperature just right so the space is cool in the summer months and warm in winter. Seal any draughty windows with draught-excluder tape to reduce the incoming chill. If your roof is made from glass or perspex, it will be the main cause of these temperature fluctuations. Control the heat of the Sun’s glare with solar-control film from Purlfrost. These large stickers help retain a sunny, light feel in the space while providing a comfortable temperature. You can also add a radiator for winter, too – horizontal or plinth designs can be installed underneath windows – and, for summer, make sure there’s a fan or ceiling fan as well as window and roof blinds to reduce the Sun’s effect.

INSTALL NEW GLAZING Take a good look at the windows, roof and door and check that they’re in good condition. Window frames should be watertight to prevent any leaks and stop heat from escaping. Improve the room’s thermal insulation with double or triple glazing. The roof should also keep the heat in, and if it provides ventilation on warmer days, even better. Consider solarcontrolled skylights to open it up, or selfcleaning glass if yours is prone to birds flying overhead! Other options include a solid roof to block the harsh rays of the Sun, a polycarbonate roof to infuse the room with natural light or solar-powered roof panels. Replace the door with a bi-fold or sliding door for easy access to the garden and a seamless transition between indoors and out.

GET THE RIGHT FIT WITH MADE-TOMEASURE BLINDS As this room has lots of glazing, it’s important to choose the right window dressings for the job – and this includes the roof and door, too. Choose a specialist in conservatory blinds who will ensure that the blinds are made to measure with no gaps to let draughts in. Ideally, you want blinds that help insulate in winter while preventing heat absorption in the summer. Pleated, vertical and Venetian blinds are all great at letting you choose the amount of sunlight and heat that you let into the room. Try to avoid roller or Roman blinds, as these are more likely to fade and discolour in the sunlight. Remember to tuck the blinds’ trailing cords away to prevent any accidents occurring with young children or pets. August 2022

ILLUMINATE THE SPACE WITH LIGHTING While the Sun provides the main light source for much of the day, don’t forget the rest of the lighting to illuminate the room during the darker hours. Add boho vibes with a rattan shade, complete a cottagecore scheme with a frilly floral design, or go modern with a chic pendant, then add pockets of light with floor or table lamps, too. These will distribute a gentle glow throughout the room and are ideal for curling up with a good book after dark or on grey winter mornings. Adjust the level of brightness with dimmer switches or have even greater control with smart lighting that can be controlled from an app on your smartphone or tablet for even easier operation.

110

yourhomestyle.uk

SET THE SCENE WITH FLEXIBLE FURNITURE To make the most of this versatile space, choose furniture that can be used indoors and out. This is ideal if you have bi-fold or sliding doors, as you can quickly open the space up on a hot day and take the table and chairs outside to enjoy an al fresco meal or relax with family and friends. You don’t need to select ‘conservatory’ furniture either. Look for pieces made with weather-resistant materials if you want the option of leaving the furniture outside or something cosy, with more of a living room feel, if you want sumptuous comfort but are prepared to always bring them back inside. Keep a basket of blankets nearby to wrap up against summer evening chills.

‘Our conservatory revamp has given us a lighter, brighter open-plan space’ Determined to make their New Forest cottage work for them, Katie and Debbie transformed their conservatory into a well-lit haven

When Katie and Debbie Lemin-Stone first saw the 150-year-old New Forest cottage that’s now their home, they were bowled over by the view of the large natural common on their doorstep. Though the land is no longer a communal space for local residents to graze their cows, it’s an asset to the couple, who love walking their two cocker spaniels in the country. The cottage had been in the same family for 60 years and needed work. ‘It was going to be a challenge, but we bought it because it just felt right – we knew it could become

The open-plan kitchen and conservatory provides a well-lit socialising, cooking and entertaining space for the couple

Katie and Debbie found the slow progress and expense of their home improvements such a drain that they contemplated moving house. However, when a potential purchase fell through, they stayed put and continued their renovations. ‘We opened up the conservatory by removing the kitchen door and part of the wall to create an open-plan feel,’ recalls Katie. A considered redesign created additional shelf space in the kitchen and a built-in bench seat on the conservatory side to accommodate guests. The couple retained a section of exposed original brick as an unusual feature and a reminder of the history of the old workers’ cottage. Katie and Debbie are now moving on to their next project, but only as far as the bungalow next door, so they won’t be missing out on their favourite view! At the time of print, The Shrubbery is on the market with spencersnewforest.com.

a lovely home,’ explains Katie. It took a number of years before the house was ‘finished’ and fully modernised. There was no kitchen when the couple moved in, which was the first of many projects. They pulled down a lean-to shed that adjoined the kitchen space, which they replaced with the conservatory that is now a much-loved spot. With double doors leading onto the well-established garden, the couple enjoys spending time here all year round as it provides them with a lovely view of the common beyond their home. The conservatory’s polycarbonate roof has had to be replaced due to deterioration, though. ‘It was leaking and there was built-up dirt you could barely see through,’ says Katie. ‘Replacing it with glass was a big outlay, but it has made such a difference in terms of lightening the space. Even on a winter’s day, we can come and sit in here and feel as if we’re outside.’

OUTDOOR KITCHEN

it

L

ong, hot summer days are made for outdoor entertaining. And a garden kitchen unit is a great way to ensure any al fresco soirée goes smoothly. Whether you opt for a simple barbecue island or a fully equipped setup with everything you need, it means that you can spend more time outside with your guests instead of having to constantly dash back inside. This contemporary outdoor kitchen has a sleek, sophisticated look and is made from treated wood that can be left out in all weathers. If you have a barbecue or pizza oven, place them alongside the unit to create the perfect prep and cooking station. This design also features a stylish Belfast sink, which means that you can even do the washing up outside – or leave it to soak while you enjoy the party!

Top tip If you have a large gas barbecue or pizza oven, you may wish to make the one side of the unit shorter so you can place your cooking equipment alongside it

✔ Belfast sink, with waste and pipes ✔ Treated exterior wood (we used 900mm decking spindles) ✔ Mitre saw ✔ Mitre adhesive ✔ Drill ✔ Outdoor screws and nails ✔ Screwdriver ✔ Zinc-plated brackets ✔ Fence slats or slatted fence panels ✔ Crowbar ✔ Hammer ✔ COAT exterior paint in Nomad ✔ Paint brush ✔ Instant grab exterior adhesive ✔ Multi-tool ✔ Small plastic feet ✔ Large brackets and masonry screws ✔ Thick treated exterior wood for worktop ✔ Orbital sander and sandpaper ✔ Exterior woodstain

1

Start by building a frame around the Belfast sink. Place it upside down on the ground and cut two lengths of treated exterior wood (decking spindles) to the same width as the sink to support it underneath the front and back. Then cut four legs, one for each corner, to reach from the ground to the top of the sink.

2

Use mitre adhesive to temporarily secure the legs and supports together, before drilling pilot holes and using outdoor screws to attach them. If you find that you can’t attach the side extensions (step 4) with screws because of existing screws in the frame, use the zinc-plated brackets to join them instead. Cut horizontal supports from the treated wood to join the front and back legs at the top and bottom, and ensure the frame is sturdy enough to hold the sink. Add similar supports to link the front and back of the sink base. Extend the kitchen unit by creating two more sets of legs (to the same dimensions) that will sit on either side of the sink frame. these to the sink frame with horizontal lengths (you may have to use the brackets for this). Add brackets underneath the sink supports too, as this is the heaviest part. Paint the frame now, as it will be tricky once the slats are attached. If you’re using a fence panel, you’ll need to carefully remove the slats using a crowbar. Hammer out any nails and cut the fence panels to size – you’ll need 900mm slats for either side of the sink, and shorter slats for section under it (don’t worry if they’re a bit too long). Give the slats a coat of exterior paint now before you attach them. Work out the spacing between the slats however you want, but try to ensure a

regular gap. Make sure all the slats are aligned to the top of the frame, then attach them to the frame with an instant grab exterior adhesive (choose one that takes 10-15 minutes to dry, so you can adjust them if necessary). You can leave a gap in the slats to access a small shelf, which you can make by attaching a couple of leftover slats across the horizontal supports inside. Once the adhesive is dry, nail the slats in to secure them and then paint them. If necessary, cut along the bottom of the slats using a multi-tool to neaten up the

Sarah SaverySmith, Brand Director at ProCook, says… Gone are the days of hiding everything away in cupboards to maintain a clean look in the kitchen – now it’s all about displaying your cookware and accessories to add character. Refresh your kitchen by injecting stylish storage solutions and colourful cookware that work as both interior accessories and useful tools. Add a sophisticated touch by displaying a statement

cast-iron pot in the open, or lean various-sized wooden chopping boards up on the countertop for an Insta-worthy kitchen shelfie. Just remember to vary the levels when styling shelves and surfaces (varied levels are the interior stylist’s best friend – they’re pleasing to the eye and make a space look instantly more chic than keeping everything at the same height). Wall-hung storage solutions such as a knife set are also a great way to add a decorative touch while still offering functionality, and wall storage is a handy way to free up sought-after counter space. Radiators hold a lot of water, so remove it carefully to avoid spillages. Ensure the heating system is fully turned off before you drain the radiator and use the right-sized spanner or wrench to loosen the valve nut gradually before emptying it. Then remove the radiator from its supports and put it to one side, preferably on something that will protect it from being scratched. After you’ve finished painting, you can replace the radiator by reversing the steps above, after first rehanging the radiator on the wall brackets or floor supports and then making sure that the valves are re-tightened as needed.

I’ve recently replaced my taps with matt black ones. How can I keep them looking their best? Arya Martin, Hull

A

Paul Bailey, Product Management Leader at GROHE UK, says… If you’ve splashed out on a smart design, you’ll want to keep it looking like new for as long as possible. Many of today’s on-trend graphite and metallic finishes are manufactured using the latest physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology – a process that involves using a vacuum to add a layer of thin film across the surface of the metal. This creates a durable finish designed to stand up to the wear and tear of everyday life, but it needs to be cleaned with care. In most cases, regular cleaning with a little soap, warm water and a microfibre cloth is all that’s required. Steer clear of harsh chemical cleaners, though, as these can damage the finish. Abrasive scourers are best avoided too, and although natural remedies such as lemon juice or vinegar may seem safe to use, it’s always best to check with the manufacturer, as they contain acid that can dull certain finishes. Q

How can I find out the value of my property? Liz Harris, Okehampton

A

a more accurate idea of its value than going by asking prices. Finally, you can call a quick sale firm and get a free offer on your home. But

bear in mind the amount they offer will likely be about 10–15 per cent below market value, so remember to add that amount back on.

Jonathan Rolande, Director at HouseBuyFast, says… The most accurate way to find out the value of your home is to ask a few local estate agents to visit for a valuation. Not only will they know the prices of local properties like yours, but they also have access to data that isn’t available to the public (from websites such as rightmove. co.uk). They can also judge market activity – almost on a day-to-day basis – and can predict changes in it that could influence the price of your home, for better or worse. There are also some great ways to arrive at a value yourself, without calling an estate agent. Zoopla has a tool that lets you enter the location, condition, size and other details of your home to work out its approximate value. You could also check sold-price data for houses similar to yours on the Land Registry website (bit.ly/SoldPriceData) – comparing your home to others like it sold nearby can give you

How can I make my garden better for wildlife? Rebecca Taylor, Omagh

A

Mark Lane, TV presenter and gardening expert for Stannah, says… Introducing a wide range of shrubs, trees, herbaceous perennials, as well as annuals and biennials, will attract a variety of wildlife. You could also try creating habitats for beneficial insects and pollinators, by building bug hotels (right) and log piles. Bird boxes and feeding stations will also provide the perfect habitat for our feathered friends – just remember that if you start feeding the birds, you’ll need to keep your feeders full, as the birds will soon come to rely on them. Water is essential for all living creatures and is especially important during hot summers, so a water feature or pond will attract all kinds of animals, from dragonflies to frogs and toads (which will eat your slugs). Provide a gentle slope made from pebbles, so that hedgehogs and other wildlife can easily get to the water and leave without ending up in the pond. The most important thing, however, is to garden organically and, if you can, make your own compost, which will provide the right environment for beneficial fungi, earwigs and beetles that can be worked into your garden.

Q

Avoid using insecticides and pesticides and look for alternative solutions, such as a garlic wash to keep slugs away from your hostas. If you have a lawn, leave an area to grow long to create shelter, food and structure for wildlife. Finally, don’t be too tidy at the end of the summer – leave seed heads and decaying stems on the plants (especially perennials). These provide food for birds as well as little nooks and crannies that insects like ladybirds can hibernate in.

Create a technicolour oasis with bright blooms and soothing water features, then turn over for summer maintenance jobs and the best battery-powered garden tools

Plant OF THE MONTH

Grow the hard-working, half-hardy Begonia ‘Buffey’ for a bolt of brightness in your beds, borders or hanging baskets. Dark foliage makes the peachy-yellow double blooms of this perennial really sing. Sun- and shade-tolerant, this begonia doesn’t need much help to flower prolifically. Keep a close eye on water levels, especially if you’re growing it in a container, and feed your plants every few weeks in summer. When blooming really gets going, deadhead occasionally to keep your begonia display fresh. Priced from £9.99 from Dobies.

Make it rain

Transform a planter into a calming fountain with the help of Hydria. The remote-controlled fountain kit costs £199.99 and doesn’t need to be plugged or plumbed in. Simply place the battery-powered fountain into a 30cm pot, decorate the top with succulents, or any accessories and mosaics from Hydria, then sit back and enjoy the soothing sight and sound of gently splashing water. Find out more at hydrialife.com

SUMMER BRIGHTS Fill your borders with the vivid petals of the Totally Tangerine dahlia. It flowers from July until November – plant it in a sun-soaked spot and it can spread out to 75cm and provide a cascade of colour. Come winter, lift it out for frost-free protection. A 3L pot costs £12.95 from Sarah Raven.

GARDEN IDEAS HOW TO…

grow new strawberry plants from runners

Want to play a small part in helping the UK’s biodiversity? Take part in this year’s Big Butterfly Count

Strawberry plants begin to lose their vigour and produce less fruit once they’ve been in the ground for three years. They compensate for this by producing new baby plantlets on the end of long runners and, by now, these juvenile plants will have rooted themselves into the ground. Gently prise them out, sever the long runner and pot them up into fresh peat-free compost. After a few weeks, plant them in a different bed (or a container that has new compost) to avoid a build-up of diseases in the soil.

The main breeding season for birds in Britain ends in August, so now is a good time to prune your hedges and bushes

veg that can be frozen in the freezer (and turn those that can’t be frozen into soups, chutneys and jams). Now birds have come to the end of their breeding season, it’s safe to prune hedges and smarten up any topiary shapes to keep their edges crisp. Sharp shears are ideal for small topiary shrubs and a cordless hedge cutter is the best tool to quickly power across a hedge (see ‘Six of the best cordless garden tools’, over the page, for our round-up of the top battery-powered tools). If you have a spare 15 minutes, take part in the Big Butterfly Count, which runs until 7th August. It’s an engaging activity for children on school holidays. Butterflies react quickly to changes in the environment and can help scientists assess how much help nature needs. Visit: bigbutterflycount. butterfly-conservation.org for more details.

CORDLESS BENEFITS Most cordless garden tools are powered by lithium-ion batteries that work with all the tools in the same range from that manufacturer – in some cases, the batteries are compatible between manufacturers too. Not having a cable means you never have to think about how close you are to a plug or whether you need an extension cable. When buying a new battery-powered garden tool, check to see if a battery is included as some manufacturers sell them separately.
