THE PLAY COMES ALIVE Planning for the opening summer per formance begins fully eight months earlier with the selection of the production. After the Rep chose Pinocchio to delight its audiences, work immediately began on research and developing a directorial concept.
11:30 GETTING INTO COSTUME This is where the director interprets the play’s text, themes, characters, style, mood, and structure. It is this process that “colors” the production and sets the tone for the per formance. It is during this time that the director is tasked with casting the piece and deciding who will play the parts of the kindly woodworker and the eponymous puppet – as the production itself rests on their ability to take us on the journey with them.

ON WITH THE SHOW! After the first of the year, sets, sound and costumes are designed and are quickly followed by three weeks of intense rehearsal. One week before spring break, it’s time to incorporate it all at the tech rehearsal – a complete run through from start to finish – finally breathing life into the famed wooden boy. The following day, The Rep opens the spring season of Pinocchio.
SPRING INTO SUMMER Following the spring production, the new summer cast is brought into rotation and they und ert a k e t hree w eek s o f rehearsal to make the show their own. Just before Memorial Day, they have their tech rehearsal and then they inaugurate the summer season! It is a timeless, exciting and tireless process for a single show, but The Rep hasn’t become Northwest Florida’s premier theatre by resting their laurels on a single show – they undertake numerous productions each year and dedicate the same passion and resources to each to delight, amaze and astound audiences year after year.

SOUVENIR: Where did you draw your inspiration? Geoff Chick: We wanted the home to feel traditional. We accomplished this by using the Florida Cracker style in unexpected ways. The home is grand – accommodating big family vacations – however we wanted to break down the scale of the home to make it feel intimate. The narrower massing allows more natural light to penetrate the interior spaces, while the top floor master is tucked into the roofline. We also wanted to capture views of the adjacent golf course from the studio balcony.

SOUVENIR: How did the setting impact the design? Geoff Chick: The location for the home is one of the tallest points along the Gulf in Santa Rosa Beach, so we really wanted to maximize the view opportunities and capture the sunset looking west. The house also sits closer to the Gulf than most homes on 30A, and the view speaks for itself. SOUVENIR: Did you surpass the client’s expectations? Geoff Chick: I certainly hope we did! The owner, the builder and I have all worked together on a previous remodel project. It really helps when you have experience building Gulf front homes together, and everyone is on the same page. Expectations were fairly high due to the success of the previous project and I think the finished product delivers. Having repeat business from your clients is very rewarding.

SOUVENIR: What were some challenges you faced? Geoff Chick: Any time you build a home on the Gulf, you need to be aware of all the special permitting requirements. There are sea turtle lighting codes, hurricane wind load requirements and piling structures, as well as permits from the state DEP, and permits for the endangered Choctawhatchee Beach Mouse. You really need a professional who has been through it all before. SOUVENIR: Why is your work focused in South Walton? Geoff Chick: We do occasionally design some homes outside the local market but knowledge of the local building requirements is a huge advantage. The quality of the homes being built in South Walton right now is incredible. I really enjoy the challenges beach homes offer as an architect and believe in doing the right thing. I also feel there is a great deal of diversity in style as you move from one end of Scenic 30A to the other. Hopefully this home will do its part to complement the style of the neighborhood. SOUVENIR: How did you work with the owners of this home? Geoff Chick: Just about everyone does business via email these days, and we build 3D digital models to share. Many clients are from out of town, but who doesn’t want an excuse to come back to the beach every few weeks? I do feel it is better to sit together at a table whenever possible and it really speeds up the design process.
SOUVENIR: What are the three most important elements? Geoff Chick: Outdoor living is probably the most important ingredient for a home in South Walton. Everybody is looking to maximize the great weather and extend the day around an outdoor kitchen. Having a pool with a view of the Gulf and plenty of lounge chairs is as good as it gets. The second element is the interior great room space where everyone can come together. This involves having an incredible indoor kitchen as well, along with a fireplace, tall ceilings and great views. The third element has to be the style itself. You need to have incredible curb appeal and adapt to the fabric of the community. The interiors are comfortable and relaxing. You want visitors to feel at home, but have a completely new experience... moments and memories that they can reflect upon for a lifetime.

Shadow of the
K I NG The King of rock ‘n’ roll was so named not only for his electrifying stage presence or his soulful vocals, but for bringing together country-western music of the South with rhythm & blues – and pop. In doing so, he forever changed music as we know it. And while Elvis Presley, the man, is gone, his music will live on – and does so right here in Destin.
Destin local Ron Adams bears an uncanny resemblance to Elvis. Adams not only shares striking physical characteristics with The King, his motivations were the ones that drove the engines of Presley’s life and music: God, country and women. Adams (like Presley) has enjoyed a wildly successful career using music as a platform to delight and entertain – employing charm and charisma to energize audiences much as the Man himself did. And while Adams was too young to meet Presley in person, he continues to honor the Man and his music with his own stage persona – the Shadow of the King.

Shadow on the road Distinguishing himself amid a sea of snarling lips and gyrating hips, Adams has been one of the most successful Elvis impersonators in the world for over 30 years. Driven (like his hero) to serve and protect those around him, Adams was once a police officer in Birmingham, Alabama. Working undercover for a vice and narcotics unit, Adams cloaked his grown out hair in jet-black dye. Late one night in a club, Adams was negotiating a bust. Almost as a soundtrack to this circumstance, the band was painfully navigating Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel. When the singer observed Adams cringing, he challenged him to do better. And in that moment, as he climbed the stage, Adams transformed. His love and kinship with Presley moved him beyond comically false staccato caricatures of the Man, to a genuine tribute of the artist whose musical

alchemy turned rhythm & blues into rock ‘n’ roll gold. Not long after that fateful night, Adams hung up his gun and badge to travel the Southeast performing his Elvis Tribute Show. His likeness to The King brought other opportunities to honor him and soon after Adams co-starred in the films Southern Heart and Elvis’ Grave. His tours expanded around the country and then finally around the world. Adams’ ability to command an audience was so powerful he even had an opening act in Huntsville, Alabama – (at the time) a relative unknown Country artist named Randy Travis. Adams’ tributes also enjoyed crossing over the confines of the traditional musical genres and he was joined by Kool and the Gang as an opening act to his headliner. Good times, for sure!

Shadow on the beach While Adams’ career had its origins in Alabama, in 2002 he decided to call Destin, Florida his home. He and his wife owned property along the Emerald Coast and following each visit it became more and more challenging to find reasons not to stay. Adams continues to travel nationally in support of his tribute, but if you’d like to see the Shadow of the King locally, you’ll find him holding court at Tuscany and the Mattie Kelly Amphitheater at NWF State College full schedule at ronadamsentertainment.com. Adams never fails to deliver when he performs, but if you’d like to see him where he comfortably wears the stage like a sequin-studded cape, look for him at Club LA in Destin, his favorite venue. In addition to Shadow of the King, Ron has written, produced, directed and starred in a variety of shows. He is most proud of his Las Vegas Tribute Show. With Wayne Newton’s blessing, Ron and his band, The Memphis Echoes, pay tribute to Mr. Newton as well as Bobby Darin, Cher, Tom Jones, Frankie Valli, Tina Turner, Frank Sinatra, and of course, Elvis Presley. When asked about his career, Adams invokes a lyric of Presley’s – “‘Without a song, the day would never end; without a song a man ain’t got a friend; without a song the road would never bend– without a song’ so I keep singing a song.” Destin locals and, indeed, fans worldwide are glad that he does. TIP#1: POSTURE It’s very typical for golfers to come out of their posture position when swinging into and through impact. Notice how I’ve retained my upper body tilt, which is very similar to what my upper body tilt was at address… maintaining the tilt improves ball contact.
Allow the head to rotate as you swing the club forward.
TIP#2: POSITION Make sure you keep your HEAD DOWN … one of the worst thoughts for a golfer! Keeping the head down too long will restrict body rotation, weight transfer and arm extension on the forward swing. While my head was down at the moment of impact, notice how my head has rotated forward as my shoulders turn through the shot.
